This is the new cover of THR – Michelle Dockery and Lupita Nyong’o posing with their shared stylist Micaela Erlanger. THR did a huge spread on stylists and their star clients – you can see the write-ups here, and the photos here. I think it’s cool that Lupita and Michelle’s stylist got the cover, because it just proves that Lupita is the biggest It Girl out there, so much so that even the people working for her are becoming stars. Interestingly enough (I already knew this), it was Michelle who introduced Lupita to Micaela. When Michelle and Lupita were working together on Non-Stop, they became fast friends and Michelle told Lupita, “When you’re ready, I have the perfect stylist for you.” That’s very generous of Michelle, isn’t it? I think it is.
Anyway, I have another piece of Lupita news for you. According to Us Weekly, Lupita is not getting down with Uncle Terry’s BFF Jared Leto. They say she’s dating K’Naan and has been since September.
Sorry Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o is definitely taken! A source tells Us Weekly that the Kenya-raised actress, 31, has been dating Somali-born rapper K’Naan since September.
The New York-based couple has bonded over their similar interests.
“She loves his humanitarianism,” says a pal of the “Wavin’ Flag” singer, 36. “They’d both passionate about African issues.”
K’Naan has two sons with pharmacy tech ex-wife Deqa Warsame. And the rapper’s pal notes that Nyong’o and K’Naan are taking things slow.
“She hasn’t met his kids,” the friend reveals.
Fresh off her Oscar win for her role in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, Nyong’o is definitely Hollywood’s new It Girl. After fellow Oscar winner Jared Leto called her his “future ex wife” during his Independent Spirit Awards acceptance speech, rumors of romance between the two blossomed.
“When I read these rumors, they’re so detailed that even I start to question whether they’re true or not,” Nyong’o joked on The Ellen Show last month.
Well, anything that gets her away from Jared Leto and Uncle Terry. Many of you said in last week’s post that K’Naan is a good dude and that he and Lupita would be good together. It wouldn’t surprise me if she has been quietly dating someone this whole time – she seems to instinctively know the value and limits to her privacy, and she guards herself carefully. Play on, Lupita. Play on.

As far as Jared and Uncle Terry—he’s gross as hell but there are some double standards here. Tilda Swinton, as someone pointed out, invited Uncle Terry to her b-day—and Lupita was at a dinner party that other people were at like Miuccia Prada (it wasn’t just Uncle Terry and Jared). She’s a 31 year old black woman in a business that often favors young white chicks…she’s not in the position where she can avoid Uncle Terry at a dinner party right now. Even if she was associating with him (which would disappoint me ;( ), I’m not sure why she would be getting hated on for this and people like Tilda, Elizabeth Olsen (who was also at the dinner party Lupita was at and posed with Terry), etc. escape criticism for doing the same damn thing. I’m honestly more disappointed that Tilda associates with him–she’s powerful as hell and a feminist, and yet she’s all over his website and they are tight. Sorry for the rant—just got annoyed at some of the comments on ONTD.
I think the problem is that she’s pretty good friend (girlfriend?) with Jared who is best buddy with Uncle Perv.
It’s not like it was the first time they met and she’s not powerless.
If it was a totally random picture I think people wouldn’t have problem with it, but it seems to be recurrent.
People are disappointed cause they believed (wrongly) that she was so perfect, flawless, royal, etc; whereas she’s a normal human being.
After learning about Tilda yes some of the commenters did give her shit about it. Nothing much was said about Elizabeth Olsen because C/B didn’t run a post about her but they did about Lupita. Most commenters were just commenting on what was right in front of them. I’m sure if Kaiser and the team had posted pics of Olsen with Uncle Terry, posters would have had something to say about that as well.
I can’t speak for everybody but I’ve been done with Tilda since I first heard she’s a Polanski advocate. I still think she’s a great actress but for me, her character is super questionable. Yesterday bugged me because I love a Lupita and want to see her do really well in Hollywood and not be a one-hit wonder.
I love Tilda’s style and look. How she carries herself seems very natural too. I like her because of that and she’s a good actress. And i’ll still judge her from my screen for her questionable associations and choices.
Lupita dating K’Naan would definitely redeem her slightly in my eyes, after yesterday’s post. But I’m going to have to agree with you, logistically it just doesn’t seem like they would be able to date!
Edit: As for Tilda, I don’t much about her and almost never read posts about her on here, but if she’s a Polanski supporter, that is just sad, because I do know enough that she sells herself as a strong independent woman/thinker.

K’Naan seems pretty great though. Dating or not I like that they’re friends. From his ex-wife to people who’ve worked with him I’ve only ever seen positive things about him in the news, and he comes across as humble and intelligent (in Canada he’s been interviewed a lot in print and on TV).
Agree with zala, K’Naan seems to be mostly famous in Canada, and he has never struck me as fame hungry (unlike someone like Leto, who is fame DESPERATE).
Oh sorry, should’ve made myself clear. I mean the men she is shipped/linked with by other people like Fassbender, Leto et al. She wasn’t shipped with K’Naan because nobody had heard about them until recently 🙂
If girlfriend is dating K’Naan, good for her but it seems like she keeps her love life private which is why I can’t comment on it really.
I think Lupita’s fashion has pretty good but it’s definitely not as perfect as people make it out to be. The red dress with the cape was by far the best thing she’s worn, followed by her Oscar dress. Other dresses were pretty but not OMG gorgeous like those two.

Serious question here – to what extent would stylists advise on hair/makeup? While I think Lupita’s fashion game over the last few months has been amazing at best and only interesting at worst, I need to know who’s responsible for the matchy matchy eyeshadow to outfit ratio!!!

Yeah we cannot really know, only make assumptions or use intuition 🙂 But my opinion or feeling about it is that she’s just having fun with the new people she’s met recently in mundane events, not matter how ( with “benefits” or simply being buddies ). That’s why I can’t picture her having a relationship with Leto or any other famous actor, it looks to me totally random and simply for fun.
It could be but K’Naan isn’t exactly a household name and until recently most people didn’t know who Lupita was. It would be easy for them to fly under the radar especially if they spent most of their time in the US.
From what I understand, the Canadian press is not as voracious as the American press. I could be wrong about that, maybe one of our Canadian posters have a different take.

I will wait for more information. If they really are dating, additional info should come out sooner or later. Something about the Yale Grad & Oscar winner/rapper’s girlfriend combo sounds really off to me. I just don’t buy Lupita in the role of a rapper’s girlfriend but anything can happen so I will wait and see.
He is not your average rapper. Try listening to some of his songs and then see if you’ll have the same opinion. “Fatima” is one of my favourites.

He’s still a rapper, though. I don’t see Oscar winners dating rappers no matter how above average they are. On top of that, Lupita is a politician’s daughter. I don’t see a lot of politician’s daughters dating above average rappers either. But there is a first time for everything however, I need more information before jumping to the conclusion that something which normally doesn’t happen is occurring in this instance.
He is kind of quiet and low-key. There was really nothing much said about his ex-wife either. When he became more public with Troubadour, early interviews mentioned that he was married but not much else, I didn’t even know the wife was now an ex until recently. He’s very quiet in interviews etc too.
@Tatjana, I agree, beautiful song, same goes for People Like Me. The whole album (with maybe the exception of bang bang) is excellent. I LOVE America with Mos Def. The more poppier stuff he did with the last album didn’t have the same impact.

He’s still a rapper. Lupita is building a career of her own, she doesn’t have time to be following him on tour or whatever he does. I know that not all rappers drink or do drugs. There are even Christian rappers but I don’t see them dating Oscar winners either.
Do some research as to who the rapper is before you start to judge.

LOL. Some people get real comfortable seeing an attractive black woman like Lupita interacting with an attractive white man like Jared Leto. They have to find a way to ease their discomfort by romantically linking her with the first black man they see her interact with.

It’s obvious from the pictures that Jared and Lupita took together during awards season that they have a soft spot for each other. It seemed like they always made an intentional effort to run into each other at each of these events and share a laugh or chat. For two people who didn’t know each other previously, I find that interesting. By contrast, you don’t see pictures of her posing and interacting with Matthew McConaughey, Jared’s co-star, for example. However, I’m not ready to jump to the conclusion that they are anything more than casual friends. I could be wrong, but time will tell.

I don’t believe that Jared and Lupita are anything more than friends. However, I do agree with “Gypsy’s” comment that Us Weekly’s assertion that Lupita and Knaan are a couple is ridiculous. Anyone who knows anything about Lupita is aware that she has a lot of male friends. How can Us Weekly be so sure that Knaan is Lupita’s boyfriend and not the male “friend” she lives with in Brooklyn? The friend went to Hampshire College, so its not Knaan. Like I stated earlier, some people get real uncomfortable seeing a black woman socializing with an attractive white man. This seems to be the case with Us Weekly’s article. It comes off as a knee-jerk reaction to the Jared and Lupita pictures. The article even starts with, sorry Jared, Lupita is taken. Like Jared needed Us Weekly to tell him that. If he’s hanging out with Lupita, he’s already knows if she is involved or not. Us Weekly is clearly tripping over Jared and Lupita’s friendship, they need to take a chill pill and relax.
