Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Danish heartthrob, covers Details: would you hit it?

NC

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – Jamie Lannister of Game of Thrones – covers the April issue of Details. It’s a good photoshoot – most of the photos are black & white and look like he was mid-workout. I know this is going to sound dumb, but I didn’t realize/remember that he’s Danish. I don’t know what I thought he was, but it wasn’t Danish. Anyway, you can read the full Details story here (the Details journo went to Copenhagen to interview him) and here are some highlights:

He’s super-Danish: “You know that thing they say about Danes? How we’re the happiest people on earth? It’s because we have low expectations. Don’t expect too much. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. There’s an expression in Denmark. ‘Don’t fly any higher than your ears will carry you.’ It means don’t get cocky. Keep your feet solidly planted on the ground. Don’t think you’re special. Don’t think you’re better than anyone else. It’s a fundamentally different approach than you have in America.”

He always looked up to American actors though: “I watched De Niro in Once Upon a Time in America till the tape didn’t work anymore. I was 100 percent identifying with this New York gangster as a teenager, growing up in the Danish countryside.”

Early success in Denmark: “It made me kind of an a–hole. My first job out of drama school was a big hit, so I thought that was the way it worked. You make a movie and it becomes a big hit. Every time. But, of course, it didn’t happen that way.”

He’s happily married: He says he can’t imagine ever straying from his marriage vows—he met his wife, Nukaaka, a former Miss Greenland, when they did a radio show together in 1997—no matter how many women throw themselves at his feet (or how many men ask to photograph his shoes). And make no mistake, women are throwing themselves.

Working with Tom Cruise on Oblivion: “The pressure of having all that craziness around you all the time—I wouldn’t want to live that kind of life. I asked Tom about it. He said, ‘It’s been like this for 30 years.'”

Working with Cameron Diaz on The Other Woman: “My wife started getting letters from women all over. ‘You should know that your husband is cheating on you with Cameron Diaz. Cameron Diaz is not to be trusted.’ My wife just laughed, but still . . .”

[From Details]

He also says that he, his wife and their kids and dogs are currently living in a tiny trailer while their Copenhagen home undergoes an entire renovation. I wonder where he stays during filming of GoT? I think the Lannister sections of GoT film in and around Belfast – surely he rents a home there during filming? Anyway… he sounds very humble and cool. I might need some Danish dong in my life.

That would be a big yes from me. Holy mother!

  5. QQ says:

Although he looks like a Miami Vice Costume gone wrong in the cover, I’d hit it so bad they’d call the Police on me

  6. Sixer says:

Yes, yes I would. Hygge post, Kaiser!

  7. MsGoblin says:

Great! I see he grew back his hand. The better to grab me with…

  8. Tatjana says:

Aren’t the Lannisters mostly in King’s Landing aka Dubrovnik? Which part of Westeros does Belfast play?

He seems really cool. And I love how Martin completeky changed our view of Jaime wheb he became a POW character.

    • Devon says:

They shoot a lot of interiors on stages in Belfast. Exteriors are shot in Dubrovnik.

    • Seán says:

      – Belfast, Northern Ireland – The sets are there as is much of the rainy, rugged exteriors of Westeros (most of the show and the various character storylines are shot in Northern Ireland)
      – Dubrovnik, Croatia – The exteriors of King’s Landing and Essos from Season 2 onwards are shot here (the King’s Landing characters and Daenerys storyline are filmed in Croatia)
      – Iceland – North of the Wall scenes are shot here in the Winter (This season, they were filming in Iceland during the Summer so some of Arya, Jon and Brienne’s storyline will be there)
      – Morocco – Dany’s storyline is filmed here.
      – Malta – Malta stood in for King’s Landing and Essos exteriors in Season 1

  9. Stef Leppard says:

Yes!! I love me some Jamie Lannister.

  10. Abbott says:

He looks like Clive Owen-Mark Wahlberg had a make out baby.

    • the original bellaluna says:

I’m getting a younger Clive vibe from him too. So yes, yes I would!!!

      • Etheldreda says:

Clive Owen is 49, and Nikolaj is 43, so he’s not really that much younger. He just looks younger. And hotter.

  11. merski says:

Wow, I just had to punch myself in the face a little bit.

  12. blue marie says:

“Don’t fly any higher than your ears will carry you” I like it, more people should follow this rule.

  13. mia girl says:

What is this you ask? Woukd I “hit” it?
Oh, dear. Let me ponder that for a…
Um, H*ll to the f*#k YES!!

  14. clolune says:

yes, I looove Jaime Lanister! so hot and interesting!

  15. Kaye says:

To paraphrase someone posting about Alexander Skarsgard: I’d hit it so hard I’d be speaking Danish afterwards.

  16. lunchcoma says:

Jaime Lannister? Yes, of course I would. How is this even a question?

  17. davidbowie says:

    Hubba hubba.

  18. Dingo says:

    Yes, yes, YES!

  19. Jenna says:

    Nope.

  20. Tig says:

I really like the quotes here, and interior pics are yummy. Sorry to say, tho, saw trailer for his movie with Cameron Diaz and it looks atrocious. Plus, he’s not styled that well in the trailer- even cover photo here is a step up from how he looks in the trailer.

  21. SunnySide says:

Again and again and again. Please and thank you.

    • mom2two says:

I love Nikolaj. Not the world’s biggest fan of Jaime but his looks and acting talent make the character more interesting to me on the screen. Reading the books, I just wanted to smack Jaime (except for the times he tells his father and sister to basically stuff it). Nikolaj was sadly overlooked for an Emmy last year.
However, pertaining to his marriage to his gorgeous wife (that woman is beautiful), there was a CDAN blind item revealed about an actor who would have had his US breakout role sooner if he had been willing to do the casting couch early on his career. The actor would not, as he refused to be unfaithful to his wife. This was revealed to be Nikolaj.
So, in conclusion, in an alternate universe where he is not married and I am not married: yes I’d hit it.
I’ve got nothing but respect for this guy.

    • Anne de Vries says:

Oh wow, I love how their connection shows. Beautiful

    • Etheldreda says:

Yes – if this were any other celeb going on about how they’re SO faithful to their wife, I’d roll my eyes in eager anticipation of next week’s headlines showing him furtively leaving some nite klub with a 17 year old bimbo.

But with Nikolaj, somehow I have no trouble believing him. Which means I haven’t even got the teeniest tiniest chance of spending a night with him. So it’s a good news/bad news sort of thing, I suppose!

  22. Shelby says:

Scandinavian men are really gorgeous. I must find myself a hot viking. The only problem is, I’m in Asia and there are no hot vikings here!

    • Etheldreda says:

Yes, Scandinavian men are incredible, Danish men especially. And, like Nikolaj, they age really well. Not that 43 is old, but in some countries the men are really good-looking in their youth, but go to seed not long after they hit 30.

Nikolaj is the hottest man on GoT by some considerable distance, and probably the hottest man on TV right now. Simply delicious.

  23. mimif says:

His wife is gorgeous. Cami didn’t stand a chance. 😉

  24. Sayrah says:

    Yes!

  25. Dinah says:

Do you really have to ask??!!!??
Also: love the placement of the words, “The Swordsman” on cover. Nothing Freudian about that, nope. 😀

  26. bluhare says:

I’ll take hot Danish guy for $1,000, Alex.

And I too love “don’t fly higher than your ears will carry you”. Going to try and remember it. The trick is to say or write it three times I’m told. At least that’s what I was told it takes to remember a joke.

  27. Gwen says:

I’ve adored him since the beginning of his carrer (as he says: he started out with a BANG so everyone knew about him right away) and it’s just so great that he’s getting the succes he deserves 😀 From people I know who has either known him in the past or met him, he sounds like the nicest guy. That he adores his wife just makes him even better 😀

  28. Pumpkin Pie says:

I was completely in awe the first time I saw him with how gorgeous he is.

  29. GlimmerBunny says:

Okay, I don’t completely understand how the claiming of certain celebrity crushes works on this site but I’ll try: MINE! He’s just so sexy, talented and cool. Jaime Lannister is my favorite character too. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s Scandinavian just like me 😉

I hope he becomes an even bigger star, I’d love more posts on him!

  30. kitty-bye says:

    YAY!!!

  31. Camille (The Original) says:

    He’s utterly gorgeous. Yum.

  32. Lela says:

    Proud to be Danish.

  33. Lilacflowers says:

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Love him. Love him as Jaimie Lannister. Just re-watched the first season of GOT when Jamie is still clean and beautiful. Love that he is so devoted to his marriage. Love that Gwen Christie says that he is awesome to work with.

    • Natalie says:

Right! A resounding thumbs up from coworkers PLUS devotion PLUS that grey tank gym photo? Super hot.

  34. locheed says:

I think a man who is faithful is just that much more sexy. Bittersweet, that is, but I wouldn’t change it. I am happy for him and his wife…the world (esp. Hollywood) could use significantly more of that kind of man. Imagine who would rise to the forefront of acting based on talent alone, and how much of it is influenced today by casting couch connections?

  35. Katie says:

I would hit it until the earth shakes from its axis
