Jessica Alba covers Glamour, talks feminism, religion & Reese Witherspoon

Jessica Alba covers the new issue of Glamour, likely to promote The Honest Company. I’m actually surprised and impressed that Alba has made the company work and that she’s stuck with it – The Honest Company is her “thing” now, not so much with acting. Anyway, I like the photos from Glamour, although they’re a little bland (too much white). Alba is super-pretty. Some highlights from the Glamour piece, where she discusses feminism, religion and nudity:

Why she won’t do nudity in films: “I don’t want my grandparents to see my boobs. That’s it. It would be weird at Christmas. And, I mean, really, if you look at the movies I have done, getting naked would never ‘elevate’ the picture.”

She belonged to a very conservative church when she was small: “I was like, ‘These are not my people.’ My parents did the best they could with what they had. They were just trying to survive. I was raised by my grandparents and my parents—my grandmother was a very religious Catholic, and my parents became born-again Christians later. So that was hard-core. It’s very different than how [my children are] being raised. I was into God. I really went for it, man. Like, in the IE—the Inland Empire, outside L.A., where all the smog blows—they want to save your soul. The further I got into it, it wasn’t for me. But I’m very close to my family [today]. Church gave me that enlightenment, that there’s something bigger than yourself. I’m still connected to a spiritual thing, just not that.”

Feminism: “Where I was from, you had to answer to a man if he was the breadwinner. My mom told me that didn’t need to be the case for me—I didn’t need to rely on a man. She taught me how to hustle. I was determined to be financially independent. So I started making my own money when I was 12 [with acting]. That was freedom.”

A childhood full of pneumonia, appendectomy, asthma, allergies: “That’s what really inspired me to start Honest. I had so many health issues, and come hell or high water, my kids were going to be as healthy as possible. My life was tough as a kid. I was so lonely. And I felt really disconnected from my friends because I spent so much time in the hospital with grown-ups and felt like a weirdo. It’s a strange way to spend your time as a kid. All you want to do is play.”

Advice for Reese Witherspoon on her lifestyle brand: “Good luck, man. But, hey, the more women doing this, the better. Seventy percent of the household income is controlled by women, so it’s about time women are creating businesses for other women.”

[From Glamour]

Alba has grown up a lot, hasn’t she? The Jessica Alba from 2009-10 would have said something bitchy about the quality of work she was offered when she was talking about film nudity (as it is, I still think “getting naked would never ‘elevate’ the picture” was sort of shady). She would have said something bitchy about Reese Witherspoon, or made some sweeping generalization about religion. As for Alba’s feminism… I’m cool with it. Economic feminism is how we’re going to get more and more people on board the Feminism Train. Feminism = economic power.

  1. Kiddo says:

I’m just happy she didn’t say, “I’m not a feminist, I believe in economic equality for women”.

I like monochromatic looks (mostly black), including the all white looks. But I could never pull that off, at least not for very long. Anything white I wear is like a magnet for miscellaneous muck.

  2. Badirene says:

Can’t lie, I like her, would love her casual wardrobe (runs out of thread in fear).

    • Kali says:

I’m not really a fan of her but I really envy her style.

    • QQ says:

She is super bland and dislikeable but her clothes are very much not the issue, that and her body is where she shines!

And frankly I count our blessings in this interview for not going full on Terrible Commentary on her Mexican roots and family as she has before, full bitchy Or Shailene Woodleyan

    • Dani says:

She has the best/most consistent celebs tyle in ever department.

  3. pru says:

    I like her style, man.

  4. Nk868 says:

Thought the “elevate” jab was more self deprecating. She was never in a serious picture that could justify it. The movie with Dane cook, for example… Lol. Seemed to me like she’s grown up and she’s acknowledging she’s not a great/serious actress

    • LT says:

Agree – I don’t think it was a jab at all. I think she was just saying that for the movies she has done, nudity would have been gratuitous – nothing rude about saying that it would not have fit with the plot.

    • Tatjana says:

Actually, I can think of just a few films where nudity elevated the film, or was important for the plot or the development od the character. It mostly serves to grab attention.

      • The only sex scene that I have EVER thought was completely fitting in the film, and was just absolutely beautiful is probably the one in ‘The Piano’–between Ada and Baines. That was gorgeous (and hot), and just upped the film for me.

    • mom2two says:

I agree. She definitely was not taking a jab and just referring to the type of movies she does and she’s not wrong. She really does sound like she’s grown up and you’ve got to give her credit for making the Honest Company what it is. She might not be the best actress in the world but she definitely saw a need and tapped into it and it resonated with a lot of people.

    • ya says:

Ya totally – that’s how I interpreted it too, and i thought it was a cute joke!

  5. elo says:

She is a beautiful woman for sure but I have always thought she wasn’t very bright. I think she is more business savvy than I originally thought but every time I read one of her interviews I dislike her more.

  6. j.eyre says:

Kaiser, you make a good point re: the Femism Train. I agree.

  7. littlemissnaughty says:

What world is this? Why is Jessica Alba making sense? Especially when it comes to feminism? I was expecting something Katy Perry would say. Huh.

    • Happyhat says:

I know!!! I’ve always despised her, back from years ago when she bad-mouthed screenwriters (as a wanna-be writer, that’s a BIG no in my book).

Perhaps she’s grown up a lot since then? Cos damn, she sounds very level-headed and up my street.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

She gave SUCH bad interviews and she used to sound incredibly vapid and arrogant with a touch of “you’re all beneath me”. I did not see this coming. I like what she said and how she said it. Yikes.

  8. AG-UK says:

I think she tried to be serious in the Killer Inside Me but I use to like her TV show. She is really pretty.

  9. K.B. says:

Why is every women’s magazine slowly morphing into Cosmo? Are magazine readers today that desperate that every magazine needs to advertise s*x tips? People have been having s*x since the dawn of time. How many “secrets” could there still be?

    (Sorry for the kinda-OT comment)

  10. HappyMom says:

Wow-I never thought I could find her anything but annoying-but she kind of won me over with this interview.

  11. Samtha says:

Those pics don’t really do her justice. She’s a lot prettier than that.

I’ve always thought she was kind of dumb, but she was savvy enough to branch out from acting, and her business has been a success. Good for her.

  12. Tania says:

She looks very beautiful. I love the interview. To be honest this is the first i’ve paid attention to her, didn’t know she used to be ‘shady’.

  13. Polianna says:

She doesn’t like showing her boobs but she’s okay showing her butt. Why is butt not nudity?

    • Georgia says:

I can’t remember which movie this was but I remember reading she used a body double and/or digital removal of clothing for – I think – a shower scene. So it very well may not be HER butt that you’re thinking of 🙂

  14. serena says:

Too much white in this photoshoot. Anyway I like Jessica, she’s shallow but at least she is making something work and good. I think Reese will just do a Goop-mess.

  15. Relli says:

I totally remember when Jessica came onto to the scene and she was all born again Christian who was saving it for marriage and enagaged to her MUCH older manager. Then the other Jessica came around.

She comes off much better than she used to but her Honest commercials crack me up. Especially the cute diapers line… Like yes I have always wondered where I can buy cute Eco friendly disposable diapers for my kid to poo and pee in.

    • Tatjana says:

I always thought she was Catholic. I guess I was wrong. From my experience, Catholicism isn’t nearly as strict as some evengelical churches.

  16. Sarah says:

She can’t really act but she has great style, is incredibly beautiful and can’t fault her business savy. With this interview she’s sounds pretty level headed too. I think she is alright!

  17. Val says:

No nudity, yet you know… she plays a stripper on Sin City? Most of her movies are about her looks, so I think that’s a bit… rich to be honest. She always comments on how looks aren’t everything blah blah, but then the only roles she gets are “the hot girl”. You can be naked and unobjectified, as much as in a bikini and be an object.
I don’t dislike her, I like the idea of the Honest Company, this is just a recurring theme with her I find irritating.
Other than that she is always beautiful and has great casual style.

    • ya says:

I think that’s basically what she was saying in the interview. I can see her point about not wanting her grandparents to see her naked boobs, but she’s not pretending that she hasn’t done roles where she was objectified.

  18. Really says:

I applaud what she tried to do with Honest, but her products still have toxic ingredients and are absurdly over priced.
Her book held a good balance in terms of choosing healthy options for your family but it was pretty basic information.

  19. Camille (The Original) says:

Love the white clothing! Love a good minimalist look (although would have preferred some kind of bottoms on the shirt only pic).

  20. Jamie says:

I still find her looks overrated, but that’s just me. I can’t stand her for other reasons. LOL

  21. Just Me (and my Bobby McGee) says:

“Economic feminism is how we’re going to get more and more people on board the Feminism Train. Feminism = economic power.”

    THIS!!!

  22. natasha says:

Actually JESSICA ALBA DID GO TOPLESS in the movie “The Sleeping Dictionary” (2003)! …so topless doesn’t count as nudity?
