Shortly after TMZ released the bombshell elevator security clip of Solange Knowles attacking Jay-Z, TMZ dropped the “full-length” three-minute version, which pretty much shows the whole elevator ride in real time. It also gives more insight into the dynamics of what is going on between Jay, Solange and Beyonce. Here’s the full-length video (again, there’s no sound, curse the heavens!).
It’s now clear that Beyonce really did try to act as a buffer between her sister and her husband several times during the fight and it’s clear that whatever was happening, Solange was not going to let it go. Even when the security guard put her in the corner, as far away from Jay as possible, she kept creeping in with that finger waving around. She was telling him off for something, and Beyonce looked uncomfortable and Jay looked… well, on guard, I guess. Like he was about to get smacked or kicked again. God, I wish we had audio.
Page Six has a lengthy analysis of the tape (they didn’t get any further with it than we did), but they did speak to The Standard Hotel (which is where this took place, after the Met Gala). The hotel is pissed that someone on the security staff leaked a second hand copy of the tape (TMZ’s video is clearly someone making a copy of the surveillance footage on their phone or something).
Meanwhile, Radar points out that Solange has a history of “erratic behavior” and that she canceled her tour last summer “amid rumors of drug use.” Solange has always maintained she smokes the weed, but I get the feeling she uses harder stuff than the occasional joint. Us Weekly says Solange also got into an argument with designer Rachel Roy at the Met Gala, so it seems like Solange was already in a pissy mood, I think. Radar also has a breakdown of Bey and Jay’s marriage, which they claim involves a lot of fights and name-calling.
Incidentally, as I thought I made clear yesterday… what Solange did was straight-up assault. It doesn’t matter than she’s a woman and he’s a man, it doesn’t matter if she had a “reason” to be mad at him. She assaulted him repeatedly within the span of less than four minutes.
Some of Bey’s Instagram posts from the Met Gala:

I wish we had audio tooooooo! I totally agree that this was assault, even if Solange had a reason or thought she had a reason, it doesn’t change the fact that she pretty much attacked Jay. And is it me or is Beyonce almost like “ugh, this sh*t again?”
It did look like they are used to her having fits of rage. She does have bipolar issues
Ugh. Stop. Bipolar and random outbursts of violence do not go hand in hand.
Being bipolar does not lead to “fits of rage.” It also does not cause one to be violent. My mom is bipolar and never once has she in any way been violent. Instead, it varies from her feeling depressed to her feeling manic or hyper and it is controlled with medicine. It does not lead a non-violent person to do violent things. People sure like to throw that term around when they have no idea what they’re talking about.
@Erinn
it could if she is under medicated or if she is mixing her meds with alcohol and drugs (I looked through her tweets and two weeks ago she was writing about how she had just done weed and it made her super paranoid. So we know she is mixing meds with other substances). Also not all bipolar symptoms manifest the same way for everyone. I agree that general statements that people with mental illness are violent is are incorrect but that doesnt mean that Solange specifically isnt lashing out because of her illness.
Or maybe she is just a vile woman with no self-control or respect for the bodily integrity of others.
On another note, thank you Kaiser for a very smart and enlightened posting. This behavior is unacceptable and inexcusable and its irrelevant whether its coming from a man or a woman.
For some people, being bipolar DOES lead to fits of violence.
There are three bipolar people in my extended family. None are violent in any way.
However, a friend of mine married a bipolar woman. She is the sweetest, kindest, most artistic woman. However, when she’s off her meds and smokes pot she freaks out. Or even when she doesn’t smoke pot sometimes. She physically attacks her husband.
The bi-polar rollout is the Jayz-Beyawnce PR machine attempting to make Jayz look like the innocent party, while evoking pity, not anger, for Solange. Bi-polar manic depressives, even unmedicated ones, don’t profile as violent. Given Beyawnce’s initial reluctance to stop the fight, I’d say there was a real, ongoing bone of contention here.
Yeah, people need to stop throwing around the word bipolar when they don’t know what it actually means. If she does have mental illness issues then it could be a contributing factor to whatever problem led up to this attack. But I’m over people saying “Oh, she/he did something crazy, must be bipolar!”
That’s a terrible and unfair stigma to attach to bipolar disorder for what is nothing but speculation.
I’ve seen commenters whack out the bipolar/borderline personality disorder diagnosis on many occassions on Celebitchy but where violence and assault is involved let’s not hop on that bandwagon too quickly.
ACTUALLY…. maybe not all bipolar people are the same?!
MAYBE different medications and combinations of other substances (alcohol, drugs) cause different reactions in different people?
Did anyone think of that before instantly jumping on the “BIPOLAR ISN’T LIKE THAT, Y’ALL” train???
My aunt is bipolar; She would throw fits of rage like that and throw chairs n shit at her husband. Someone I grew up with, who ended up committing suicide, was bipolar. Guess what she used to do sometimes? FLIP OUT AND GET VIOLENT.
SO…. NOT EVERYONE WITH BIPOLAR IS THE SAME, just like not all humans in general are the same. Some people aren’t violent, bipolar or not… and some people ARE!
GET OVER IT AND STOP BEING SO GD PC.
@Jenna: You’re right, not all bipolar people are the same…because they’re PEOPLE and people come in all sorts. My version of the disorder presents differently than the next person’s (for instance, people have mentioned weed having a bad effect on bipolar people, I am the opposite – it is wonderful to me).
But as someone who struggles with bipolar disorder and is managing it quite well (at the moment) and living a “normal” life, I am quite offended by how fast and loose people are with that label. THAT is what I am objecting to. If Solange is indeed bipolar then that needs to be addressed and treated. But the automatic attribution of the episode to “bipolar issues” is unfair speculation. (Yes, I get that this is a gossip site and a lot of what we do is speculation, but this bothers me).
Not trying to be PC, but the stigma attached to being bipolar is tough. And part of that is because people use the term to describe behavior that isn’t due to a diagnosed mental illness. And I won’t get over it because it affects the way I live my life.
Oh, Jenna. You just proved our point. You said it yourself, “not everyone with bipolar is the same.” It’s irresponsible to call Solange bipolar because of her actions. There are millions of reasons she could have done what she did, why would we assume it’s because she’s bipolar? Maybe he killed her puppy and showed no remorse. Maybe he stepped on her toe and it really hurt. Maybe she’s a hothead and just flipped out or maybe he did something terrible and deserved to get yelled at. Mental illness has such a negative stigma and we shouldn’t diagnose people when we have no idea what’s really going on.
Oh, and chill it with the capital letters. It makes you look crazy.
I am sorry but not everyone who is an asshole like Solange is bipolar. That is a slap in the face to those who are actually diagnosed bipolar. Comments like these leave me smdh.
Ah the PC defence… always used when people don’t want to be cognizant of other people’s feelings.
Using bi-polar as a blanket assumption for all unexpected outward aggression is wrong. This comes from a habit of diagnosing mental illness from small snippets of information that over simplifies the complexity of theses disorders.
Using “bipolar” as a term for agression or “schizo” for sudden personality changes is a pejorative use of these terms.
Lots of people believe that this is how everyone with mental illnesses act, hence the continued stigmatization of mental illness.
It seems that she controlled her self until the elevator shut, and when it opened again. Would a bipolar person who has fits of rage be able to control them selves like that?
Actually, Jenna, I don’t think it’s ‘SO GD PC’ to not think it’s okay to tar a very real psychiatric health issue with a reputation for random violence. I think it’s just common decency to not propagate the stigma of mental health any further through nothing but unfounded speculation. But I guess that’s all perspective.
Your CAPS LOCK look great, by the way. Nothing adds that touch of intellect to a point quite like giving the impression you’re screaming it/are unsure how a keyboard works.
@Erinn, who wrote: “Ugh. Stop. Bipolar and random outbursts of violence do not go hand in hand.”
And yet, we ‘all’ saw what Brittney Spears was like after she stopped taking her medication. She ‘did’ assault a car with her umbrella and took clippers out of a stylist’s hands and shaved off all her hair; but she mainly outed out sexually. So … are you speaking about people ‘on’ or ‘off’ their medication?
I now agree that we should steer away from the Bipolar Theory. This bad behavior is all Solange. Not her disorder.
@Epiphany; How exactly do you think Beyonce could have stopped her sister? She is busy screaming and not even a trained bodyguard twice her size can contain her. To even be heard, Beyonce would have had to scream louder than her. I dont know. I think you should just let the screamer burn out her lungs. Then attempt logic.
epiphany It’s not a pr spin. Solange admitted in an interview last year that she suffers from bipolar disorder. Her anger issues have been known about for years
I think the reason people bring up bipolarity is becasuse that rumor has been swirling round Solange for years. When she cancelled tourdates last year she mentioned something about having to choose for her mental health. And when not treated right all sorts of stuff can happen. My sister is having her meds adjusted and since this started she has been flying into a violent rage a couple of times a week.
It seems that she controlled her self until the elevator shut, and when it opened again. Would a bipolar person who has fits of rage be able to control them selves like that? I would think someone who was prone to that wouldn’t be able to control when the fits happen.
@Lamb, please tell me you’re being facetious when you say this to Jenna – ” Mental illness has such a negative stigma and we shouldn’t diagnose people when we have no idea what’s really going on.”
And then say this:”Oh, and chill it with the capital letters. It makes you look crazy. “
@mayamae
Actually, according to Jenna, I was being PC by calling her crazy (it was sarcasm).
@Lamb, that’s what I thought.
I’m with you, Erinn. My adult, bi-polar nephew lived with me for two years. Despite being a “passionate and hot-headed Italian”, he never once exhibited violence. He also is a weed smoker. He’d often go off his meds, and whether he’d smoked weed or not, there was never a violent outburst, even though he was going through serious personal and professional issues. There was a distinct pattern in his behaviour: At rare times, he was unidentifiable as being bi-polar. When he was manic, he was full of positivity, energetic, uproariously funny adored everybody and wanted to make everyone happy. When he crashed into depression, he retreated to his room, avoiding absolutely everyone, declined meals or invitations for even a simple cup of coffee. He stayed holed up in his room for weeks on end and had no contact with anyone. When this episode passed, he was as “normal” (?!) as the rest of us, until the mania took over again.
I realise each person living with this condition will have his or her own manifestations, but on the whole, violence does not appear to be a mandatory symptom of BPD. I’ve witnessed far more serious and regular violence from my Asperger’s, autism or ADHD pupils, and they’ve all been under the age of 13.
Yeah it looks like this probably wasn’t the first time, by Bey’s calm demeanor. Solange may be the crazy person int eh Knowles family (every family has at least one). Plus, Bey and Jay show class compared to Solange’s trashy behavior.
Reminds me of a petulant child. Just let them rage on and say their piece while you stare at them thinking, “WTF are you talking about? Are you better now? Did you get all your rage out of your system?” UGH
Idk…There isn’t any sound so we can’t know what was said, but it looks like Jay was being antagonistic. At the end when they are leaving the elevator he looks like he’s trying to get some words in and Bey appears to be telling him to leave it alone, but he speaks to Solange again and she pops off again. That looks like a very controlled situation. What is Bey gonna do that the bodyguard can’t do? I’m not saying Solange is right, but im saying that just because you arent the person swinging doesnt mean you arent the asshole. And Solange was talking to Bey at one point like “wtf are you doing?”
The one that speaks the truth is always called crazy. The only bi polar is the Carter image and reality.
Why do people have to slap mental illnesses on everything nowadays?
Because of the herd mentality. They can’t understand that someone can actually burst out of rage and it’s basically normal. No they have to put a “medical” label on the human reaction. It’s just that mystifying to them.
I grabbed a hammer and went to my ex house and broke his motorbike into pieces when I found out he was cheating on me with my cousin. I guess that makes me mentally unstable and other bipolar…. smh.
I know, I really dislike it. People don’t say, “Oh, she has a heart problem or a kidney problem, that’s why she’s acting nuts”. Mental illness can be difficult to diagnose and we really don’t know much about Solange at all.
.
Smh Beyonce and Jay Z team are about to throw her under the bus and claim her to be everything from drunk to crazy. I hope she doesn’t let that happen.
I have to say I’m kind of disgusted with all the comments yesterday. Barely anyone used the words “victim blaming”, which is thrown around a lot when the genders are reversed. Plus most major news sites covering the story did not condemn Solange the way they would have condemned Jay-Z had he beaten her.
In fact people are justifying it assuming things with no proof/evidence like “Jay probably beat Beyoncé and Solange is sticking up for her.”
Um that’s like saying some unfortunate teen girl who got drunk and raped deserved it because, you know, she was illegally drinking and let’s just assume girls who illegally drink probably are nasty, mean high school girls so they probably deserve it.
I thought Solange tweeted something yesterday like “if you hit my sister, I’m going to hit you”
That was a fake tweet someone made up and it caught fire like the gossip/internet rumor mill.
I saw a screen shot of that as well, not sure if it was real or not though, can anyone verify??
That was clearly a parody account…i think that was already established. Plus with photoshop these day people can do anything. The same way they did with Paris Hilton, where her parody account credited Nelson Mandela for the Martin Luther Jr speech…
thanks for clarifying ladies! I don’t have twitter, so I was going off of second hand information
Couldn’t agree with you more. Exactly. We’re very hypocritical about domestic violence in this country which is why it’s so difficult for men who are abused (either physically or sexually) to come forward. Shame on us. Shame. On. Us.
I couldn’t agree more. I volunteer my time at a battered women’s shelter and even I had some knee jerk instinct to blame the guy. With a clear mind and a more open perspective this morning I see how badly I misjudged. And for that I am sorry and remorseful. Victim blaming is wrong and ALL forms of violence is unacceptable. I pray that peace is brought to this situation. Just goes to show once again that perfection among human beings– even rich, beautiful and famous people is an illusion. Godspeed.
Well said. It’s not a problem exclusive to one country, unfortunately.
I agree this is not just an American problem
You make a good point about domestic violence and the genders being reversed, but it doesn’t really apply in this case.
Firstly, there’s a difference between “beating” a physical inferior and drunkenly slapping at someone who’s much larger and clearly happy to continue baiting you while he has a personal bodyguard in the way.
Secondly, given that his own wife clearly doesn’t give a shit – except when her dress looked in danger – it probably looks a hell of a lot worse on tape that it was in reality.
Thirdly, Jay-Z is a giant prick of porno proportions – I’m sure everyone remembers the video of him attacking that girl in the late-90s and coupled with his legendary cheating and misogyny it’s not remotely surprising that sympathy for him is in short supply.
It does not matter that Jay-Z is bigger/stronger than her. So if a man is shorter/lighter than his wife, it’s okay for him to abuse her then.
“baiting you”…..Whoa you did not just say that. So basically if a woman goes to a bar alone, wearing a very revealing low cut blouse and wearing a miniskirt, if she gets raped, she was “baiting” the men.
“His own wife clearly doesn’t give a sh*t”…..so a girl who gets raped at a party where her friends are attending….obviously her friends didn’t give a sh*t about protecting her so getting raped is okay.
So if a girl is one of those stereotypical high school mean girls who has probably bullied other girls, if she gets raped, we shouldn’t have sympathy for her because she’s a nasty person.
Ya I remember that too! I have never bought he bs that Bey and jay are fine. Bey has always seemed like a weak person that talks big. I don’t agree with violence but I do like someone putting mr. Carter in his place.
Tapioca
Firstly, physical size is irrelevant. Did you see her stilletos? This horrible woman aimed that at another persons groin. And I dont know where you get that “baiting” theory from because what I saw was a crazy woman screaming at a man who stands next to his wife with his hands close to his groin. Solange is a grown ass woman, “I was baited” is not a good explanation for this crap, anymore than it would be if Rihanna had mouthed off Chris Brown.
Secondly, his wife is conflict averse, she has said this for years. She lets the bodyguard contain this crazy person and avoids eye contact even when she is jamming her fingers in her face trying to swat at her husband. Then she positions herself repeatedly between them, putting herself in harms way tbh. She conducts herself like someone who has had to deal with this crazy behavior before.
Thirdly, Yes, yes. Jay Z is the devil. He is worse than the devil. He is the devil used hanky. Happy now? Solange is still a raging douchebag. Glad I am not even remotely related to that piece of trash.
@Tapioca-Not a popular opinion but I agree with you.
*runs and hides*
@ Tapioca – I agree with you, too. People need to use their common sense and not apply generalizations across the board.
I’m disagreeing on principle. I agree that Jay-Z is a massive misogynistic dickhead but if we start saying one person deserves to get slapped around because they’re unpleasant, where do we draw the line?
He definitely appears to be baiting, taunting her (especially towards the end of the extended tape- why would he put his hand on her arm, even to guide her out of the elvator?!!) but there’s no reason for the physical freak out from his sister-in-law.
There IS a major difference between the physical damage a male can do to a female versus what a female can do to a male, but that’s not to say men aren’t in danger if a woman becomes violent. Not by a long shot. And we harp on so loudly about equality, feminism, etc, etc on this website but wow, have we fallen short of practicing what we preach on this one!
I agree Tapioca, I think there is a lot more to this than meets the eye but at the same time, regardless of whatever, Solange (as the mother of a young boy) should have conducted herself a lot better. I don’t believe Jay is a “class act”, from what I know about him, that’s the farthest thing from the truth but as a single mum, and the main example that her son looks to, she was wrong as hell.
@Dani2-good point about her being a single mom. Forgot about that…
@Aurie: There is NO comparison between what happened on that tape and sexual assault and it’s incredibly insulting to every victim of rape to suggest there is.
Let’s not go crazy here. Jay-Z got swung at a few times by an angry woman and walked away uninjured – so unruffled in fact, that despite the throngs of photographers present as they left and the scrutiny the couple are under, no-one had the slightest idea that anything untoward had occurred until yesterday.
Solange may have aimed a few blows but she didn’t appear to land any – Chris Brown she ain’t.
@Tapioca, I agree with you as well. He’s an ass, and forgive me but I find myself rooting for Solange. HRH Beyonce doesn’t look like she’s trying to ‘buffer’ anything, as long as her gown and hair remained untouched it was all good for her.
Oh the story that bodyguard could tell! Think he’s receiving a little hush money bonus in his paycheck?
“Jay Z is the devil. He is worse than the devil. He is the devil used hanky.” – Mdac HA!
I’m going to read over these remarks before I wade in, but I will say there is so much to digest here! It’s a gossip smorgasbord extravaganza with something for everyone!
“Let’s not go crazy here. Jay-Z got swung at a few times by an angry woman and walked away uninjured – so unruffled in fact, that despite the throngs of photographers present as they left and the scrutiny the couple are under, no-one had the slightest idea that anything untoward had occurred until yesterday. ”
^^Mmmmhmmmm. Yes. This.
Can someone explain to me why he waits on purpose to get out of the elevator just to give Solange time to get at him again? Beyonce and their bodyguard try to not let them get together and shield them from each other with their bodys, but you can clearly see at the end that he makes a step back into the elevator when he realizes that Solange’s going to leave it last.
Plus I find it very weird that the bodyguard denys him entry to the car. He has to take the next one. So why didn’t Beyonce and Jay spoke about who takes which car and why is he not allowed in the car?
I’m going to have to run and hide with you ladies, I guess.
I just can’t get too worried for poor Jay, the incident was ugly, but didn’t faze any of these people, he was never in danger with his security there.
The fight is over, Solange was wrong to do it, but now we just need to concentrate on the epic story this is becoming. This is going to get very interesting, since finally the cracks are showing and this incident can’t be ignored. Forgive me for just being about the gossip at this point.
I agree with Tapioca. I think it’s ridiculous to compare a minor tussle where someone took a few unsuccessful swings at someone vs. a woman who is brutally beaten and/or raped. Just like two guys duking it out in a bar isn’t the same thing either… especially if it didn’t result in any injuries. Let’s not make dumbass blanket statements like “every physical altercation is the same.” I hope you can be capable of more nuanced thinking than that and quite frankly I think suggesting as such is insulting to a victim of domestic violence/rape.
What are you talking about?! DV and abuse does apply to this situation.
All your points are pointless. What did you expect B to do? They lead an extremely public life so she let her bodyguard handle it mostly. If you want the extended version you’ll notice she did step in and even talked to Jay. Her sister was acting like wild beast. Jay handled himself with control. If he were an abuser the facade would have fallen.
Yes yes! I was disgusted as well. I dislike Jay Z to a T but unless its a self defense situation violence is not the most logical thing solange could do? We all know if he had hit her he’ll be the most hated person today and the uproar will know no bounds.
He should have bent that brat Solange over his knee and spanked her. What a huge violent brat she is and now the whole world knows it. Wish he would file charges against her. Solange is a woman-child thinking she can behave like that. People like Solange will continue to act out violently as long as people are willing to out up with it. Looks like her family keeps protecting her. One day this grown brat is going to either hurt an innocent person or get the beat down she deserves.
What is it with you and rape? I don’t agree with the posters comments and the baiting and what not but it unsettles me that you are so quick to make assumptions about what she’s “basically” saying when what she IS saying isn’t hard to follow. Let’s keep it on point
Thank you So very much!
I normally don’t comment outside the jp posts but I just have to express myself.
I was So shocked and disappointed at yesterday’s comments if it was the other way round I wonder how people would have reacted am very sure the nypd would have been involved. I don’t know what happens in that family but what solange did was very wrong. A friend of mine in houston once had an encounter with solange at a hospital and she said she mistakenly stepped on solange’s feet and she appologised but then she started screaming and calling my friend names and had to be restrained from hitting my friend. My friend left feeling that maybe she was under stress or having a bad day considering the fact she was leaving the hospital which isn’t a pleasant place to be. So she said. When the video was released she told Me I guess solange has got an anger problem or something.
Thanks kaiser for emphasising your point you made it clear in yesterday’s post that this was clearly an assault. Please let’s learn to call a spade a spade.
I too am disappointed to see the same posters who were defending feminism as equal treatment blaming the victim. It doesn’t matter what JayZ has done in the past. He was attacked by Solo plain and simply. Not in self defense. You do not lay your hands on another person for no reason except in self-defense. There is no excuse. If feminism is about equal treatment Solo should be treated the same as any man caught assaulting someone else. You can’t be selective about equal treatment only when it favors women.
Wow @TG
Hitting or spanking her back isn’t the solution and it could have even made matters worse. Jay Z behaved very matured and calm I give him props for that. And I usually don’t even like him!
Jay has been caught on camera smacking women around before, so excuse me if my heart doesn’t bleed for him.
Again. Just use another example. If I (random person) saw Chris Brown in the street and randomly decided to start beating him with my shoe, would we say 1) She’s justified, you know he does beat women or 2) Call 911!. I think the later. It’s not up to Solange or me or Bozo the Clown to dispense justice as we see fit in any manner we see fit. That’s why we have laws, police and prosecutors. And I know I’m a broken record, but I’m really hard pressed to believe these excuses would fly if JAYZ had been on that camera beating the living daylights out of Solange. I don’t like JAYZ and I don’t think he’s a good person – but it’s not my right or anyone’s to assault him unprovoked. The women that he’s assault at the time they were being assault had that right. No one else.
Yes, thats what Solange was doing. She was avenging all women everywhere, for that time that Jay Z aggressively pushed a woman away from him. Two decades ago. All hail our liberator. Our very own peach ball whose methodology is to adopt the same offensive behavior that she is fighting in the first place.
Shame on this woman and her enablers.
@Sandy, your comment made me laugh harder than it should have!
‘The wearer of peach satin with a hideous overcoat with tiny fur trim collar I only just noticed, not the one we deserved, but the one that we needed.’
Maxine– I’m sorry but if I saw a random woman kicking the shit out of Chris Brown, I wouldn’t call the cops.
Clearly Solange is wrong in this situation, someone said she was “unprovoked”, we don’t know that. Though being provoked is no reason for physical violence.
I think Jay and Bey were well aware of the elevator camera, and conducted themselves accordingly. Image is everything to that couple, just look at Bey’s sweet smile for the cameras immediately afterwards.
Solange needs anger management therapy.
In my opinion, Jay and Bey’s relationship is a lot of smoke & mirrors.
We have no idea what Jay Z said in that elevator before he laid hands on her FIRST. It could have been something innocuous like “Solange, honey, you’ve had a little too much to drink.”, or it could have been some vile disgusting trash that no sane woman would tolerate.
I agree somewhat with Tapioca, only in that a LOT depends on what happened prior to them entering the elevator and what Jay Z said after they entered.
I remember one time, a long time ago, a man grabbed my crotch when I was refilling my beer at a Kegger. I threw my beer in his face, he threw his in mine, and a couple guys who saw what happened jumped him and beat the snot out of him. Another time time in another place, a man said something to me so reprehensible you better believe I lunged and went off on him. Again, some good guys saw what happened, pulled me away, and knocked him flat.
I think it’s telling the bodyguard was so gentle with Solange. If she was not justifiably provoked, I’d think that Hero Bodyguard (he really deserves a freakin’ medal for handling himself in that mess) would have been a lot rougher on Solange.
To me, the body language of everyone involved is telling. If only the video was clear enough we could lip read!!
*Disclaimer* Lest anyone get the wrong idea, this is the extent of me being physical violent in my entire life.
Yes. Thank you to Kaiser as well for recognizing this. I saw a lot of comments to the effect of “how dare Jay and Bey throw Solange under the bus!” Um. There should be no debate about whose fault this was or who deserves blame and scorn for it. It’s the one who’s using her limbs to beat on someone else. We’re all going to speculate about what Jay did to piss her off, obviously, but whatever he did, it should not have begetted violence. And if Solange thought she was protecting Beyonce, then she needs to back off and learn another way to intervene. Violence is not okay, ever.
Kenny Boy, we have no idea what happened before they entered the elevator. Like I said above, for all we know Jay Z could have grabbed Solange’s private areas in some corner of the party , and she waited until they were in a private area to tell him she was not having it.
I can easily see Jay taunting her, and in this scenario Solange was not only justified, but actually ladylike for waiting until they were alone to air this dirty laundry.
From just a body language standpoint – the fact that Beyonce is looking at Jay while Solange is yelling at him (not during the physical attacks) makes me think that she is in agreement with Solange. If she disagreed with Solange, she’d be looking at her, rather than her husband.
Regardless – there have been so many rumors about the tempers of Jay Z & Beyonce – who knows the truth? Just goes to show all that glitters isn’t gold.
And yet if Jay had done some wrong, you’d think he’d be looking at Beyoncé and pleading “Tell your sister it’s not true” or something like that.
I agree that from a body language standpoint, it looks like Beyonce is on her sisters side and they left together at the end of the night as well, I dunno man, this whole thing is a mess and I feel like it’s only going to get worse in the media. Their publicists must be having the worst time right now.
She left to comfort Solange
Just curious why Solange needs comforting when she just beat the crap out of JAYZ who appears to have a bruised lip/face and I guess was left to comfort himself?
You are reading too much into the leaving arrangements. The SUV was probably the bodyguards ride. Its not like they ride in the limo with the stars. And if you look closely you can see the bodyguard talking into his sleeve probably organising for the vehicle to come closer.
Neither Beyonce and Jay Z seemed to even know that there was a second car available. Jay Z has to be told that there is another vehicle. Beyonce doesnt even hear it. This is simply a case of everything happening very quickly rather than of Beyonce picking sides. She seemed to be going out of her way not to pick sides during the fight
Besides werent Jay and Bey just at a basketball game with Jake Gyllenhaal afew days after this?
It is really hard to say. Maybe Solange is drunk and Bey is trying to keep things as calm as possible. Physically she does not need to try defend her husband; he is a big man and can take care of himself. The video is crazy, but it really could just be Solange drunk and fightin’ mean and Bey trying to keep things as under control as possible. She may ride off with her sister because she doesn’t want her to be messed up and on her own.
She could also have looked at Jay Z to check if he could still hold it and remained calm. This is probably a situation that they have been accustomed to.
From the body language it does seem that Beyonce is taking Solange side, but if you look at the footage carefully you could see when Beyonce is talking to Jay Z he point to himself in disbelief.
That could mean that Beyonce is either agreeing with Solange or more likely blaming JayZ for riling her up more that already was.
Yep, mikeal. Like Jay’s saying ‘I didn’t do anything. Your sister’s crazy!’ Coupled with his body language of Jay Z first putting hands on Solange, there’s a lot more here than meets the eye.
Yep, I pointed that out yesterday. He clearly keeps motioning towards himself.
The whole thing with the body language is interesting. US weekly is already saying this attack was because Jay didn’t further her career.
It’s pretty interesting that Lainey has a take on their body language, too- coming to a completely different conclusion.
Bey is talking to J but that does not mean she agrees with Solo. Also they left in separate cars because as J was heading for the first car with Bey and Solo, Julius took to the second car.
This whole body language is ridiculous. Some folks even think Bey didn’t do anything or enough to break up the fight. Fact is, was she supposed to brawl too? And if she did, which person should she have attacked? She stepped in but Julius was there to handle things. That’s his job. He’s the body guard.
I don’t like that Jay is getting painted as an abusive man. He’s a rapper so he must be. He shoved a woman who
I don’t know, I think it would be a very comfortable pr move to describe Solange as “the crazy one”, instead of admitting Hubby of the year J-Z was caught doing something wrong.
+1
Because Solange is the one who comes across as trashy/gutter in that video. Bey and Jay seem normal.
Agreed!! I think there is a whole lot more at play here than, “Oh, she’s crazy. That answers all my questions!”
But, all that glitters is not gold after all, and even if you’re one of entertainment’s most powerful couple, you still have some sh-t.
You know, if this was Brad and Angelina… she would have been “burnt at the stake”
What Solange did was wrong, of course. But Bey’s passivity seems to be the most interesting part of this story. Jay, on the other hand, handled it well.
I don’t think she’s crazy but she’s tweeted 4 years ago that she had a plan to kill beyonce’s teenage boyfriend. I know all of this is because something had transpired beforehand but if it was beyonce doing the kicking and hitting she will be labelled the same.
The crazy one will be the one seen doing the act whether there was a reason or not.
I see you, with your victim blaming. I think its rubbish.
Its easy to brand her as crazy because the woman is crazy. The end.
This. Can’t taint Jays image, now can we?

She’s not on drugs, Jesus Christ. Drunk? Perhaps. But families fight! That’s her brother-in-law.
Really? I come from one pretty f’d up family and I have NEVER seen or heard of something like this happening. Not even close. Physically attacking one’s brother-in-law is so far outside normality. I don’t know if she’s on drugs or what, but she obviously felt like attacking a family member in a fairly public place was the right thing to do at that time, which just speaks to the level of dysfunction there.
How do you know she isn’t on drugs or mentally ill? Families do fight but not all of them assault each other like what Solange is doing.
GiGi-I agree. This is totally a dysfunctional/abnormal behavior and ti is not ok to assault someone like that. Can you imagine if it were Jay instead assaulting Solange in the elevator. T his story would be spun totally different.
I don’t like my brother in law so I just ignore him.
My brother in law is a piece of s***. He deserves an asswhoopin … I need to call Solange.
Yeah because assaulting people is the answer.
I hope you never have to meet my brother in law!
@ Tracy – yup, we ignore my BIL too…a real jackass he is ! People’s own karma will get them.
“I need to call Solange.” – Kara
LOL!
@Dominique
You guys may want to seek family therapy if you think this is normal behavior.
You may want to mind your business.
My thoughts exactly, Brandi. Its tragic what some people think constitutes “normal”.
Dominique, it seems you are getting defensive–the thing is, you might want to not post about it if you don’t want people to comment on it. I don’t think Brandi meant to be rude. This is not at all normal or healthy behavior that is going on in your family. There is nothing wrong with therapy.
I don’t get why people are immediately assuming that it’s about Beyonce and Jay’s marriage, Could be that it’s just between Solange and him. It’s been long rumored that they just don’t get along. It’s been known for years than Solange has anger issues and she’s bipolar
I didn’t know she was bipolar but the thought crossed my mind yesterday. I thought that maybe that was why both Bey and Jay seemed relatively calm during the whole thing– like they knew how to deal with this sort of outburst b/c it had happened before. And Jay really did nothing during the elevator ride to provoke any of it– he protect himself and tried to restrain her from attacking him.
MTE. It’s well known Solange has a temper. Jay probably said something and Solange snapped.
That’s what I’ve been saying. Everyone is so focused on Beyonce, the star, they are thirsty to make this about HER when really it’s about Solange and Jay.
I agree. I don’t know or care much about these people but I could definitely see it being something personal between Solange and Jay.
Solange obviously has zero respect for JayZ, I wonder why that is.
Is it true that Solange deleted all photos of Bey on her instagram?
I just read the same thing… It looks like it’s true – just checked out her instagram. Weird!
No it’s not true. Don’t believe everything you read. http://instagram.com/p/hem7Lewouv/
I hope this whole thing heals. Really, because now I cannot go back to believing that Bey wins all the time and she’s the Queen of the world, she can’t fool me into that stuff again!!
Bey and Solange are sisters, and Jay and Bey are married, this is a very tough situation for her.
Who knows what happened but Solange comes across as a lunatic. It is not ok to attack someone at all like that ever, male or female. She is mouthing off at Jay the entire 3 minutes and laying into him. Jay and Beyonce come across as class acts here. This is really trashy and repulsive behavior by Solange. Just bizarre.
Solange seemed pretty composed for a drunk or high person. That might be what some people want to put out there, but unless she had a very high tolerance, most inebriated people can’t pull it together so well.
Eh, I beg to differ. There is a crackhead/drug abuser who lives close to me. One night he was hollering/hooting for about an hour and a half before someone called the cops on him. As soon as he saw the cop, he acted totally different and composed. I even though, “Give that man an Oscar.”
Yes my sis and i used too get inebriated coming from a party and would stop by the kitchen for a drunken snack, the minute we heard or would suspect my mum was up, we were like drill sargents.
I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again today. This is assault. if the NYPD and prosecutors are interested in pursuing this, they’d have a great case for assault under the NY penal code. Short of JAYZ beating the crap out of Soloange specifically right before getting on the elevator this is not justified and again, if this were JAYZ doing this, we’d all be loosing our minds.
That said, do these elevators really not have audio or was TMZ not able to obtain it. Again, if this goes any further than just gossip to something of a more formal nature, we may get the answers we’re looking for.
Finally, from the way they’re all behaving this has happened many, many times before. And I really believe Beyonce isn’t getting involved because she knows if she steps off the elevator with a black eye or a ripped dress, the press will go nuts. Image . . . image. . . image. . . .
Well, there are videos of JayZ hitting a woman, and he’s still able to hold the position he does.
And it would be really unusual for a Closed Circuit Tv system like this to have audio – they probably have a hundred cameras throughout the building.
There may be video of JAYZ hitting a million women but legally, unless he was hitting Solange right before this happened she is not justified. At all. Again, we don’t seem to make all these excuses for female victims (cue up Chris Brown and Rihanna).
Um, where did I justify her behavior? She clearly assaulted the man. His wrongs don’t make hers right. I was simply pointing out that he has been taped hitting a woman to show that people wouldn’t, “go crazy” if the roles were reversed.
I also read/heard Solange took most pictures of Bey off her own Instagram? I don’t follow her so I’m not sure.. Hmm, wonder if Solange was drunk? It’s hard to gauge what went down because there’s no sound. But just going by the video, Solange looks completely in the wrong and completely pissed.
Curious what type of spin they will try to put on this..
I checked yesterday and at the time, she only had one photo of Bey from maybe six months ago? I feel like whatever type of spin they try to put on it, Solange might not cooperate, she’s always been the sassiest, more opinionated sister. I never knew she was violent like this though.
You think Solange would just come out and say what the fight was about, or do you think she’ll keep it private? Maybe we’ll get a tip from a “source”? I’m very curious though.
Girl, I wish I knew, I think the whole deleting Bey’s pics definitely means that she’s not happy with Beyonce though so there’s no telling how she’s going to react to their PR spin.
We’ll never know how or why this happened. There are stories about Solange being erratic and stories about him being a dick so who knows. The only way it may, is if Beyonce and J eventually split, can’t see it happening though.
Beyonce’s reaction is…just odd. I get not wanting to get involved especially if the family member has a history so maybe telling her to stop would have been pointless, but it’s just so odd. She stands there, totally detached for the most part only making motions towards the end, and also to get her dress train out of the way. She actually acts like a stranger would in that situation, just trying to stay out of it.
Reminds me of the video when PETA conned their way into the dinner to ask her about fur use in her clothes. Just sits there not saying anything until someone intervenes (and for once they weren’t being PETA-like and were being quite respectful and nice)
Actually it isnt strange. I do the same thing when I am around this particularly horrible girl who rolls in my circle. Every once in a while, and at the worst possible time, she just goes off on some irritation. I learnt the hard way that anything you say just fuels her. You tell her to calm down and she accuses you of being “condescending”. Even the wrong facial expression can set her off further.
The correct way to deal with this is dont indulge the tantrum. Dont even make eye contact. Focus on staying out of the way and letting the stupid child run down her energy. Lucky for Beyonce, theres a bodyguard in the room, so she doesnt even have to worry about anybody being hurt.
But yeah, I have a Solange-type in my life. The drama is exhausting.
Actually, beyonce’s behavior was strange, when you consider the people fighting were her husband and sister.
Comparing that to your situation with “this particularly horrible girl who rolls in my circle” who “just goes off” (not on your spouse or significant other) is silly.
Most people, even if trying to avoid taking sides or getting hit, wouldn’t want their loved ones physically fighting, and would try to stop the fight from going down (and you don’t have to start fighting yourself, or get physical to stop a fight, especially if a bodyguard/third party is doing the heavy lifting of holding the angrier party back). Acting as if your baby sister fighting your husband in front of you in a confined space has nothing to do with you is odd. It’s detached. And it’s cold as hell that beyonce mainly reacted to protect her gown’s train.
Also, you don’t know that this situation was a “tantrum” because you don’t know the reason the incident occurred.
Thought Jay Z was incredibly restrained for the most part but you could tell he was starting to get a little pissed towards the end, as his fend offs were becoming a bit more aggressive.
Good on him. Because she was violently attacking him and that is NOT ok. He demonstrated himself as a class act.
The words “JayZ” and “class act” do not belong in the same paragraph. He’s a hell of a business man though! In this situation, from what we’ve seen, he was in the right.
Look we will never know. These people will guard their image to their last breath. It’s naive to dismiss the woman as crazy and unfair to assume infidelity or abuse by the man without proof of either.
Give the bodyguard a raise though, that’s my last word on this.
“Give the bodyguard a raise though, that’s my last word on this.”
This! I’m wondering if we were watching the same video. The video I saw had Solange restrained by a bodyguard (except for a wildly kicking foot) for almost the entire time. Would love to know how Jay Z would have handled it if the body guard wasn’t there though. Wonder if he would have seemed like such a “class act”?
I do think he handled it very well. She lunged at him multiple times. Knocked him so hard with her purse, her stuff fell out and he was still rubbing his jaw as he left the venue. She tried to kick him in what my son has been calling “Holy Grail” multiple times. God only knows what she is screaming at him. I dont listen to rap and I am too old for his music anyway but he has won me over. He did good here.
I too was amazed by his restraint. She was kicking him with stilettos , punching him in the face every chance she got. She was spitting at him too. He didn’t hit her back . He took the time to pick up her purse and other items passing it to Bey to give it back to Solange.
Looking at pics of them getting out of the elevator he looked shellshocked with a swollen lip. I wouldn’t have had that type of restraint bodyguard or no bodyguard. I don’t think most men would either. If you are in my face beating me up I would hit you back. No excuse for attacking people when not in self defense.
Look at how many people are bending over backwards to justify Solange’s assault simply because they don’t like JayZ. It’s like the Chris Brown apologists who came to his defense saying RiRi is no angel and had hit Chris herself in the past.
Yea and if you notice the first attempt at leaving the elevator he actually tried to hang back and it looked like he was trying to put his hand on her (whether to calm her or shove her was hard to tell) but that got her riled up again. AUDIO!!
It looks like he was attempting to talk to her and put his hand on her back. He is much bigger than her, if he wanted to hurt her, he could have done so fairly easily and a lot sooner. The body guard wasnt restraining him.
I dont know, I just can with Solange now. I used to like her so much. Now, I agree with the unfavorable comparisons with Beyonce. She IS the disappointing sister.
I know, I was surprised how reserved he was- even picking her purse up off the ground & handing it to her.
Jay left in a separate vehicle because the body guard directed him to. He was physically directed away from the car his wife was in.
And Solange committed assault. It doesn’t matter why. Women need to learn that if it is wrong for a man to hit a woman then it is equally wrong for a woman to hit a man. We can’t hold higher expectations for men than we do ourselves, no matter what the situation.
+1 My bet is their team thought it was best to split them up in case Solange attacked and assaulted him again. Maybe Bey left with her to try to calm her down and see that she didn’t pop off on social media, create a further ruckus, etc.
yep to all of it.
the only thing I don’t understand is that the behaviour seems to indicate that this has happened before, because no-one seemed shocked that it escalated. They already seemed agitated while stepping into the elevator, So why not split the group up before getting into a tiny space like an elevator? Seems kind of like a faillure of their staff if they tried to control a public situation.
managing celebs during public events mostly is handling ego’s and making sure people who have a beef with one another don’t meet up close.
yes to this.
equal rights extend both ways. women don’t get a pass for assaulting someone 🙂
Worst. Elevator. Ride. EVER.
Whatever happened, Solange was clearly out of line by physically assaulting him, and repeatedly too, any time she could get within reach of him she went at him. That’s flat out wrong, no matter what she’s upset about.
I feel bad for Beyonce, whatever is going on there isn’t good, and she’s certainly stuck in a bad position between her husband and her sister.
That elevator ride was pure Bat Country. Wow.
All the comments about Jay Z yesterday were completely disgusting, people even saying that of the bodyguard wasn’t there he would have gone off on Solange, i mean wtf? You can clearly see even at the end when it’s just them in the elevator, he’s talking to her and she put on her hand up. He pushes it away and she goes off again. It looks like both Beyonce and Jay Z are completely used to this behavior, scarily so. I feel bad for Beyonce because it’s uncomfortable position to be between a sibling and a spouse, and really, even if Jay Z was snorting cocaine in the bathroom with 4 hookers it is not up to Solange to ‘defend’ her sister. It seems much more likely that i they had an ongoing argument that bubbled over. And people need to stop with the ‘violence in their marriage’ foolishness, if so why does Solange allow her son to go solo on on trips overseas with them? It just looks like family drama, and i feel a bit uncomfortable with the victim blaming of Jay Z.
I agree with you @Karen – I am shocked at all the blaming of Jay-Z and Solange “defending” her sister. WTF. The one thing that is not arguable from that video is that Solange is a violent person and committed assault. I will say though that just because she lets Bey and Jay take her kid on solo trips with them does not mean that Jay and or Bey are not violent as well. I am not saying that they are but since we know Solange is violent and disfunctional she likely doesn’t have the same kind of standards we would have when deciding who can or can not be around our children. Becasue if she had high standards then she wouldn’t allow herself around her own child since she is violent and disfunctional.
That was terrifyingly vicious (and depressing). I’m not a big fan of Beyonce and I know nothing about Solange, other than that she is Bey’s sister, so I have no idea about the family dynamic. But that is some serious dysfunction, all around.
Jay Z probably criticized her awful dress choice or probably Solange was promised a record deal of some sort and Jay Z did not deliver.
Analyzing the body language is fascinating, but yeah, without audio we will never know. But interesting that when Bey and her bodyguard finally depart the elevator they leave Jay and Solange inside. Instead of keeping his head down and leaving the elevator now that things have finally difused, Jay instead turns to Solange, reaches towards her and clearly says somthing that causes her to lash out all over again. She hits him around the head, and Bey and the bodyguard come back in, and ONLY at this point does Bey position herself between Jay and S, facing Jay in a way that seems protective of S. And then she leaves with her, and he is led to his own car. Very interesting.
It seems like he was trying to get the hell off that elevator and who can blame him. Solange comes across looking like a nut. I feel exhausted for Jay and Beyonce just looking at that video. Imagine having to deal with that all the time!
+1
Actually that is not the only point Beyonce position herself between Jay Z and Solange, if you look at the footage you can see that that after Solange tries to kick Jay Z, Beyonce position herself between them.
There is nothing he could possibly have said that would justify hitting another person over the head with an object. You can do some serious harm connecting a purse containing a phone and god knows what else with someones skull. If I were Beyonce I would cut her out of my life. At least until some serious remorse.
100% agree. Assaulting others is not ok.
+1
It seemed to me at the end he was just trying to calm her down but at the same time make sure she wasn’t behind him where he couldn’t see another attack coming.
Between yesterday’s posts and today’s some of you are a painting a really sad picture of Beyonce’s life. Cheer up, guys, she’s living the dream.
I read a comment on yesterday’s thread that said something like b & j’s next pr will be being photographed happy couple style at a basketball game.
Congratulations to you, unknown poster! They were smiling at the nets game last night!
I’m sorry but I don’t believe the erratic behaviour excuse. What Solange did is horrible and despicable and should be condemned but you can see she clearly confronts him in lenghts about something,a long argument between the two.
I’ve been following her for years: she is outspoken and opinionated but not violent so I doubt this violence is something they are used to.
Furthermore if there had been drug use problem, she would have lost the custody of her son, so I truly doubt this theory.
In most of her interviews,he talks about being super protective of her sister, and when Bey was harrassed by the fan who touched her ass,Solange said she would have reacted violently if she had been there. That’s why I think it has to do with something Jay did to Beyoncè!!
So she says she would have reacted violently to a random fan, but you don’t think she’s a violent person? That seems like an overtop reaction for something relatively minor that Beyonce dealt with.
She didn’t say she would have reacted violently, she said she wasn’t sure she would have been able to control herself. Whatever happened her reaction was incredibly wrong but I just don’t believe labeling Solange as crazy is the end of all. If she had had drug abuse problems or if she had been mentally ill we would have heard of it before and as I said before, she wouldn’t have full custody of her son.
No matter what, it is NOT ok to assault someone. What if he was the one hitting and kicking her. Would you feel the same way?
Of course it’s not ok! I said it’s despicable and makes me feel sick. What made you feel that I condone violence? I don’t even like people making jokes or memes about this whole situation.
Couldn’t it be that Beyonce was aware of the fact that the scene was possibly recorded on a security camera, and that she therefore consciously chose not to engage? And staying composed is something she is trained in, because she is filmed and photographed by her own team almost 24/7. I admit that in addition to that she must also be used to Solange going berserk, if not, even she would probably have shown emotion…
I thought so too but if she knew the video would never come out. They’ll proceed straight to the managers of the hotel.
I’m not blaming Jay but I’m not buying he was just standing there and for no reason Solange just decided to attack him. He’s a big guy and brother-in-law or not, there had to be something. If there’s a history on her part of this, why would Beyonce be so passive rather than talk to her sister (off the ledge so to speak).
Many have mentioned Jay not fighting back – just fending her off as one would, but why would he risk popping a seam when he has a nice big bodyguard to keep the crazy pinned.
Also that little interaction at the exit where there seems to be so confusion about who should go when. Jay stays back with Solange and the bodyguard and Beyonce come back into the elevator. Why didn’t Jay walk out first to get some distance between himself and Solange? Cause it wasn’t over until he said it was over? Did he want to say something without the bodyguard and Beyonce right there?
I’ve seen people who can stay calm while saying all sorts of nasty stuff to bait other people into craziness. I’m not blaming Jay, but without audio, I’m not going to say Solange wasn’t justified and/or drunk/high/bipolar or whatever the reasons others are speculating.
I agree. I’ve seen men deliberately antagonize a woman, while staying very calm and speaking in a normal voice, yet the whole time they are saying the most awful things. Then when they get a “crazy” reaction, they continue to speak calmly and make fun of her and continue to escalate the situation. I’m not saying that’s what happened, but it could be. It doesn’t excuse her, but everyone has a breaking point, and some people get off on pushing people to that point while they sit back and watch and then point the finger at her like, “see? bitch is crazy!” while they act completely innocent.
Yup ! Exactly – a physical reaction can be very normal!
What women do you hang with!! Ones with poor judgement

Ugh. I don’t like how this is being reported.
Bey and Jay have a long history of violent outbursts and screaming at each other. This video has come to light and it’s clear that something set Solange off. I don’t know what, but something Jay did — and a pragmatic reason he didn’t retaliate more aggressively was because they were leaving the Met Gala with a ton of cameras downstairs. His restraint doesn’t automatically make him “a good guy”.
Had this video not be leaked, this incident and whatever prompted it would have been kept from the public indefinitely, but now it puts them in a PR free fall. Solange is definitely being thrown under the bus, with Jay and Bey trying to save face with their PR teams spinning that she’s “unstable” or “bipolar”. This may forever taint/destroy her career and they don’t want people looking into all of their fights (such as backstage at the Super Bowl).. No, they’ve got to keep up their perfect super couple image.
Mm-hm. Preach, Greyson!
@Greyson – “Solange is definitely being thrown under the bus” — yes, because she ASSAULTED someone for about 3 minutes. The video footage does not lie.
she did not assault someone for three minutes! she was raging at him for a few – and the bodygaurd held her to calm her down for most of it! it doesnt matter what would have happened if the bodyguard wasnt there he was. AND at the end it clearly shows beyonce is trying to leave the elevator as a couple with JayZ and he deeks back on PURPOSE to touch and say something to Solange which makes her react, Beyonce comes in and CLEARLY directs JayZ to get out of there. NOT as straightforward as it seems. Furthermore when they are leaving to the car the sequence is Solange, Beyonce , JayZ. Solange gets into the car and Jay pushes his way past Beyonce to get in behind Solange until the bodyguard pulled him away. My take on the situation is that Jay and Solange have a hot headed relationship like two childish siblings and Beyonce is used to intervening ( or just letting them go at it) and in the case of the limo Beyonce let the bodyguards know to not let Jay in. In the whole situation it is actaully Beyonce who is in control letting these two kids do their thing.
How do you know this, where is the evidence ? Solange appears to be the one with mental health issues. ’cause she is the one acting like a nutty on camera.

*milk through my nose* !
People keep commenting on her trashy behaviour, well no one really knows what they all do behind closed doors they could all be doing the same craziness but she stupidly forgot there are cameras in the elevators. It must not have had too much fall out as they flew to Costa Rica (Bey/Solange) to Kelly’s wedding a few days later.
The fight took place May 5th; the wedding was May 9th; and the leak was May 12th. Obviously they thought there was privacy in the elevator (big mistake). But now there may be professional fallout from this scandal.

The way I see it, Jay-Z was probably acting like a typical brother-in-law, shooting his mouth off about something she didn’t like or shooting his mouth off at her, and she fired back but with fists instead of words.
At the same time, I really don’t get what TMZ gets out of this (or any of the stuff they do). I have never understood the site/TV show and their purpose. How they get this type of stuff has got to be illegal. This is a family matter, in-laws fighting, and not for public consumption. But they’re famous so…
Those in the security department should be ashamed of themselves but again people don’t really care about others it seems. I would never think of doing that the same with I would never take sneaky photos of people/celebs on my phone. It’s just a whole new world now and I don’t know if it’s for the better.
Please, none of us complained when Donald Sterling’s true character was brought to light through ILLEGAL recordings of his PRIVATE conversations with his mistress, who also tried to BLACKMAIL him.
Enough victim blaming Jay-Z.
Aurie, Sterling admitted he asked Stiviano to record him as a matter of course because he frequently forgot what he said and the tapes refreshed his memory.
THIS mess is more akin to ‘The Sun’ surreptitiously taping Jude Law’s and Sienna’s private phone calls, a total invasion of a person’s reasonable right to privacy, much like our own NSA.
That being said, it’s great gossip and beats ‘The Stars are just like us shopping’ photo ops hands down!
Rachel Roy is the ex wife of Damon Dash, Jay’s ex partner. Probably still some bad blood there. Maybe during the Solange/Roy argument, solange didn’t feel like Jay backed her up? (I’m obviously speculating like everyone else)
I read Bey’s reaction as ummm non reactive. If someone lost it in an elevator, I’d try to be invisible. Ya know, treat them like a TRex; no sudden movements.
What – Solange was allegedly fighting with somebody else? If that’s true, Solange is definitely not going to be asked back to the MET Gala, unless the Carters do a LOT of groveling on her behalf.
Lol, treat them like a T Rex 🙂
In my uninformed mind, this is what went down:
Solange was out of her mind and already on a bad trip following an earlier altercation, then Jay was all like “Damn gurrrl, Chill…” And Solange just lost it…
That sounds about right. Everytime I watched someone say, “Calm down” or “Chill” it just pours gasoline into the fire.
“Don’t get so emotional.”
This is the phrase that causes me, personally, to fly off the handle. Verbally, however – no ‘fists of rage’ like Solange.
Even so, my fiancee has learned that if we are having a disagreement, it’s best for him to not use those words if he wants to have a productive coversation.
If her ‘fists of rage’ and kicks were in response to a run of the mill sexist goading men seem to enjoy, then Solange needs to get help.
Otherwise, I daresay condescending clueless guys mansplaining is a universal hot button for many, many women. My own temper (yelling) goes from Zero to sixty when my SO drops the “Calm Down” after coldly being a shitheel during a fight. It’s only been very recently that I’ve finally learned to walk away – they HATE that!
What a holy hot mess. You bet the hotel is mad; this leak is going to hurt business. Who is going to book an event at the Standard where there is now fear that a VIP’s business is going to be put in the street? TMZ better have paid this person extremely well because this person is so fired when the hotel discovers who it is. That person better forget unemployment insurance (he/she would be fired for cause – actions that are detrimental to the business). This person would have a hard time getting a job because word will get around about him/her being the tipster, by gossip in the industry or exposure by the media.
As for Solange, that tape is so damning she needs to be talking to a lawyer now. I don’t know what NY law would say, but this fight took place in an elevator in a public building, a common area. The DA may charge her, even if Jay-Z may not want to pursue this.
Last night the Carters were act a NBA game acting as if nothing happened. If this is what their crisis management team advised them to do they need to fire the team ASAP. Smiling for the cameras will not make this mess go away; neither will putting out inspirational tweets. This has spilled over to mainstream media; and the White House press secretary is most likely going to be asked about this because the Carters are seen as F(s). O. B. (Friends of Barack). The White House may distant themselves from Beyonce’ and Jay-Z if something sinister comes out (and you know the media is digging).
Lastly, I don’t like the comments with the parties involved are being “ghetto”, as if this is typical behavior for African Americans of all social stripes. Solange was wrong, but you don’t indict a whole group of people because of it.
OK, rant over.
I totally agree about the use of the word “ghetto”, it makes me cringe every time I read it in relationship to this incident. It’s as if people are saying “oh, typical black behavior”.
My Irish American family has our share of alcoholism and you can bet, like many families, we have our extremely rough moments. Behavior like this has nothing to do with race, it has to do with a loss of control.
WORD.
especially the GHETTO term…..Elin wasn’t called ghetto when she went off on Tigers SUV.
geez.
^^Thank you. Couldn’t agree more.
Perfect response, Nev. ITA to all the above.
Yesterday, there was some pretty crazy racist ‘jokes’ that I’m so glad Celebitchy modded. This is a better place for gossip because of it!
This footage is so personal and something we where never meant to see. Probably because it’s Beyoncé and jay makes it so fascinating. I feel bad but can’t help but feel WOW!! & want to know what happened..?
I haven’t read through all the comments, so forgives if this repeats others.
1. She should be getting more flak for trying to do something to Jay-Z. Can’t stand the guy, but you just don’t handle stuff like that. If the roles were reversed, everyone would be calling JayZ another Chris Brown.
2. Stop blaming bipolar issues…I know people with bipolar disorder and this isn’t how they act. I know every case can be different, but it’s obvious that Solanhe is mad about something and she didn’t handle it that great
3. We don’t have any idea what this is about, so maybe JayZ really did do something horrible and Solange’s actions would be somewhat justified. At the same time, it could just be her getting upset about something incredibly stupid. EDIT: never mind. Watched the entire thing and she’s just pure assaulting. The horrible thing would have to be murder or something lol.
4. I don’t think she’s drunk, she seems to know what she’s doing. She waited until the doors were closed to act out. Alcohol? Maybe, but drunk to where she’s hitting people? Nope.
her a$$ needs to get arrested. which is what would happen is one of the peasants assaulted someone.
Can I just thank Kaiser for calling this assault? It’s been a little maddening that so many websites are not calling it out for what it was. Jezebel seems to be spinning in circles to try to come up with excuses for it. She assaulted him, period. A woman doing it is no excuse. If Jay was saying horrible stuff to her, say whatever you want back, but keep it to words. If he treats Beyonce terribly, spend your time dealing with your sister.
And every one of you know that if the situation was reversed and Jay did this, people would feel differently. Now, allegedly there are videos of Jay being pretty violent, so it’s not that I feel bad for him. But Solange did herself no favors with this – it just puts her on the same level as him, if the rumors are true. If she wants to defend her sister, she needs to work with her sister, not try to beat up her brother in law.
Yes Jezebel gives feminism a bad name
Will Gwynn Paltrow remain best friends forever with her “Uncle Jay”?
Stay tuned.
From reading the comments it seems there have been reports of Solange’s temper or sassiness before. I did not know this. Regardless, at what point does someone’s temper become a problem? I do not know what provoked her, if anything. I don’t condone violence unless someone is being attacked or protecting someone. I will throw down if necessary.
Also I wish the diagnosing of mental health disorders would stop. It’s offensive.
“Also I wish the diagnosing of mental health disorders would stop. It’s offensive.”
This!!! THIS is what really has to stop right now.
Generalizations about mental health are an overt sign of ignorance and hurt everyone with mental health issues or who works on this field.
But what if she does have a mental health disorder.
Then what?
THEN and IF we could ask some specialist in mental health to enlighten us about the topic instead of throwing around suppositions and generalizations that will damage the people living with such diagnosis. IMO, gossip away as much as you want but throwing around the label of a mental disease so lightly is very irresponsible and unnecessary. It makes it sound like only people with recognized mental diseases can have this behaviour and this is far away from the truth. Plus, even a person with a mental health disorder is more than simply that, let’s not reduce people to it.
@JC I think the point is that too many people say ‘she’s got a disorder!’ when we don’t even personally know her. They’re diagnosing based on select actions shown to us…working in education, I know many people with disorders and you can’t label them after seeing a few outbursts in somebody’s classroom. To me it also suggests that all people with disorders have no control over their emotions and outbursts, which really isn’t true. Commenters are seeing something out of control, and automatically yell ‘disorder!’ Call it what it is: she had no self-control.
For some reason I can’t comment on JC’s comment. JC, I am not a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner so I wouldn’t dare give an uneducated guess at what disorder someone has. Also, an NP or psychiatrist working with her shouldn’t be commenting on her diagnosis unless authorized to do so. That is a clear violation of hipaa. Also, mental health is a broad spectrum. We can’t just assume because someone is diagnosed with a disorder that they will act in the same way as someone else diagnosed with the same disorder.
For the people that responded thank you for the insight.
Solange will take the fall for this, and Beyonce and Jay Z will continue to have the “perfect” marriage.
She needs to take the fall , her a## needs to arrested or committed. If you think this is normal behavior.. I have had family members who have been abused, cheated on ,etc yet I have never assaulted the abuser. I hope she doesn’t act like this around her son.
She attacked someone!!! Obviously she needs to accept any and all consequences!
I have the impression that the family is a little dysfunctional Beyoncé (his father and now his sister) c may be of that he got his desire to control everything
Agreed, it was assault and she should be punished, like anyone else would be. I now can’t help but wonder if she just has some mental issues and these types of outbursts are common with her? I mean Beyonce doesn’t seem surprised in the slightest. JZ does seem shocked, and the photos of them coming out the elevator prove it. I wonder is she just ‘snapped again’, or something.
I don’t know these people. It was here that I read that Jay Z is apparently unfaithful to Beyonce. Had no clue about those rumors or about Solange smoking anything or doing hard drugs or being bipolar.
From what I saw in the video …. My two cents: Little sister is protecting big sister. In the end, little sister is pissed also at big sister. If the rumors of infidelity are true, makes sense. Was it not their father that after his daughters got all the fame ended being unfaithful to their mom? Could be big sister is ashamed in private and does not know how to correctly deal with her situation, could be blaming herself as in why did I not see this coming.
About the Instagram … so who is the bad influence? rhetorical right … but that post will light up the gossip mill started by that other site and their publishing of that video. Hope the person got money because if I was in charge of the hotel, he or she would have been fired by now.
From Solange own mouth 2013
Releasing a statement Wednesday, Solange cited MENTAL and physical health as reason for removing the dates from her calendar.
“I am completely devastated to announce that I will be canceling my international festival dates for the Summer. I wish I could put in words how much of a difficult decision this was…but between moving part time to a new city, starting my son in a new school, and writing/ recording my new record…I really had to make the best decision for my MENTAL/physical health and provide some stability for my family.”
errr…I have no idea if she has or not a bipolar disorder, but you are aware that that transcription actually means nothing, right?
We all have a “mental health” that we have to take care of as much as we do with our physical health. Not even the fact that you copy and paste that several times, with caps locks included, will change the simplicity of that statement.
I do thank your for the quote. But I agree with minime, just because you quote mental and health reasons for not touring, it does not mean that you have bipolar disorder. Mental health includes stress factors as well and how you manage that stress, it does not mean that you have a diagnosis for a mental health condition. For me the quote sounded like it came from a mature woman that understands her responsibilities in life.
I think Solange’s reaction is wrong. But we don’t have audio of their altercation.
There is something called psychological/emotional abuse (that includes verbal abuse and dominant behavior), which can cause, among other symptoms/ reactions, anger. I am not justifying SOlange’s behavior, but because he didn’t see Jay Z hitting her doesn’t mean he was not abusing her or her sister. He could had said many nasty things (verbal abuse) that we are not aware of them.
As someone pointed out, I think Beyonce’s body language seems to be in agreement to Solange side of the story.
Sorry, not buying the “Solange is [crazy/bipolar/huffer)” spin. Bey does seem to be trying to be the voice of reason, but to me, solange going off on Jay Z, is the REASON Bey is able to be the calm one

As if this statement proves anything about what was going on it the elevator. Most people will view this video through their prejudices, whatever those may be.
Maybe Solange Is a mean drunk, maybe “in-laws,” maybe Jay Z said or did something to set her off. No one knows exactly what happened, or ever will, since there is no audio.
what I take issue with is the presumption that Solange is the bad hat here, and can’t help but notice that presumption helps to preserve the status quo.
Can’t believe people are saying she just has a temper or is sassy or that J baited her. We have no idea what he said. She looked as though nothing was going to stop her from attacking him and she could easily have been triggered by absolutely nothing. He could have just accidentally brushed against her. A grown woman doesn’t get a pass for that. She is dangerous and needs help. J might have been trying to be conciliatory, but people in a mindless rage don’t respond well to that, they are getting a distorted view through their ears and eyes and see everything as a threat. He would be wise to just do as B does, just ignore her and try to weather the storm.
I can’t stand Jay Z, but there is a documented history of Solange saying and doing crazy shit (and not just rumors either, like the Superbowl rumor of Jay and Bey screaming at each other). The fact that Bey and Jay kind of had a “this again” reaction makes me think that Solange probably is kind of unstable and or on drugs. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jay really was a total asshole who cheats and or is just plain nasty to Bey but it still doesn’t excuse Solange physically assaulting him.
I don’t understand. So someone can get assaulted in an elevator and security does nothing about it? What’s the point of the cameras then ???
There’s something going on with Jay Z and Beyonce because Beyonce had the tattoo on her ring finger of the roman numerals IV removed, which stood for their birthdays and anniversary.
Where’s the proof of this? I haven’t heard this story yet. If she did, that is a sign of something going on. However, they were at a ball game together just last night looking happy and smiling. I think they really want the public and media to forget the fight even happened.
If you look at the smiles from the basketball game, they are the fakest smiles I have ever seen. Like, completely transparent. There is clearly something wrong behind the facade of the smiles.
Team bodyguard on this one. He was professional throughout the whole thing, and it was an extremely difficult situation: his job is to protect his boss at all costs, but they’re all trapped in an elevator and his boss’ sister has decided for whatever reasons to commit assault.
At one point in the video, Solange lunged again and it looks like the bodyguard hit the stop button and then used his comms link to order a second vehicle – he was already thinking ahead to the car ride and he decided that he didn’t want his boss trapped in a small space again with a deranged person. Then he very smoothly leads J over to the second vehicle – so smoothly that the collected papparazzi didn’t even pick up on it.
I would have to say that out of this entire debacle, only the bodyguard comes out looking better at the end of it! Professional, competent, discreet…the security person did an excellent job.
I agree, except he should have secured that elevator footage. I’m surprised someone didn’t go to security within minutes to buy off that video.
Hmm…good point.
My understanding is that these closed circuit cameras usually operate on a loop, so maybe the security person was assuming that within six hours it would be taped over and thus gone forever? If so then that narrows down the number of people who had access to the tape within such a small time frame.
Umm, that is very disturbing….isnt she a Mother??? Wow.
This is all kinds of f%cked. I really hope Beyonce is not being abused in any way by JZ. The whole “eat the cake Anna Mae” line is even more sickening.
Wow. A tape in which Solange attacks a non-retaliatory Jay Z and your conclusion is: I hope Beyonce is not being abused by Jay Z. I mean, seriously, what the hell?
Even if Solange is bipolar, the evidence does not show that. Solange calmly walked into the elevator and waited for the door to close before attacking Jay Z, She did not attempt to attack anyone else BUT Jay Z, not even the security guard who was restraining her. She was hurling words at Jay Z, seemingly accusatory. When the elevators doors reopened, she calmly, walked out, albeit her deflated expression. A mental breakdown, would not have allowed to calmly walk into and out of the elevator and into an awaiting car. There is a temporary loss of rationality and control in a mental breakdown. You don’t walk calmly into an elevator, wait, have a breakdown, then stop the breakdown to calmly walk out. I am not saying that Solange acted appropriately; however, clearly there is much more to this story, and Jay Z, Beyonce and now the security knows the truth.
This!!!!
Actually, her behavior is absolutely typical of abusers. (Not drug abusers, but people who commit abuse.) She controls herself well in public and only unleashes on the person she wishes to cause harm to.
There seems to be a really large number of people who think it’s impossible for women to abuse men. I’ve been shocked by all the defending of this woman going on. I’m just glad Solange didn’t have a gun and that Jay-Z did have a bodyguard.
I feel like we need a new tread minus all the bipolar diagnosis and “victim shaming” crap and get to the good stuff, the analysis of the play by play. Did you see the bodyguard gabbing Jay’s wrist? Did he think Jay would hit her? The bodyguard did not really put himself between Bey and Sol- tells me he knew the history and that he was not worried about Bey.
Wow we’re going deep into the weeds with this one aren’t we? Who here has a crazy little sister? Who here IS the crazy little sister?? That fool either SAID some crazy dirty BS or got caught DOING some crazy dirty BS. How do I know? Because WHY would they already be putting disparaging “drug user” stories out about Solonge? Like Jay’s a saint now? Don’t even get me started on the the Bey-bot. She was either sedated or ALLOWING her sister to do that.
My theory (pure speculation): these three have a history of shouting matches, Solange had a few drinks but was not drunk and does not back down from a fight, Solange resents that her sister is more successful and “secure” and maybe thinks Beyonce is a sell out for putting up with Jay-Z in exchange for that “security” while Solange still has to hustle, Jay-Z resents having Solange along for the ride and probably paid for her $25,000 ticket, Solange was still fuming from fighting with Rachel Roy, Jay-Z said something to her in the elevator about needing to control herself, Solange went off and brought up the Super Bowl incident when he verbally attacked Beyonce, which is why Beyonce tried to stay out of it because she knew they were both wrong and both right at the same time.
Doesn’t matter what was said between Solange and Jay-Z. She was wrong to attack him. She should be investigated for assault. I don’t care if she’s bipolar, drunk or high. She put her hands on him and in the real world she would be charged with a crime.
Not victim blaming here Solange was wayyyy outta line but I really don’t think there’s error in exploring all the possibilities. Reiterating, the body language here is just too weird to be a simple, recurring outburst. There’s an underlying dynamic that the viewer can pick up on and ultimately makes this so damn confusing. I will say this though, I think they are writing off Solange a bit too conveniently with the “she does this all the time” excuse. If that was my sister and was the case I wouldn’t hesitate to release a joint statement addressing the issue. The silence speaks volumes to such an image controlled star. Our business or not, Beyonce usually addresses shit, but right now it’s crickets.
Like everyone else, I can only speculate but I don’t believe that this was a drug/drink/mental health issue and more an anger management issue. Everyone involved is in full control of their faculties as shown when the elevator doors open on the wrong floor at around the 1.57 mark and Solange goes silent. She only starts back up again when the doors close. I agree that something set her off as at one point she is talking directly to the bodyguard and it appears, to me, like she is trying to get him to agree with her. Bey’s behaviours strikes me as someone trying not to engage and possibly inflame the situation.
Yes, knowing the events leading up to the attack would help clarify what happened but wouldn’t change the fact that this was a violent assault on another individual, regardless of the gender of the attacker and victim.
Maybe someone else has pointed this out above(too many too read today!!)but what MAN allows his wife and mother of his child stand between him and crazy? Even if crazy is family, Jay should have put his wife behind him to protect her. Douche.
I have to say that in the black community things to do with abuse are often are very different. I can only attest from so many of the real life experiences of myself and my friends/ Black women Sociologists like Bell Hooks that black women protect black men more than we protect and care about ourselves. It is very much the mentality from my experience / many articles I have read from fellow black women on the internet that because black men have a sort of historical role that has been demonized, black women are sort of taught from a young age to not only tolerate a lot of the abuse but also to hide it. Family gatherings with abusers are focused on the victim having to be the bigger person / let it go etc. because we are ingrained to think that we can’t not give greater society more reasons to demonize the black male. But really the black male is not the one struggling to better the community. Most of the strong people in my life have been black women but it is always the same refrain that when you talk back or dare to be angry about the way you are treated that you are classless and an angry black woman. I can’t tell anyone how scary it is to watch so many of the women in my family hide all their feelings because they don’t want to be attacked with this label from the get go.
I don’t care for Jay-Z for the same reason I don’t care for a lot of the mainstream rappers, they get rich off of disrespecting and demeaning Black women who have been historically vilified and made less human with a bunch of labels from Jezebel, mammy, to sapphire. They continue to perpetuate these ideas that are so common that the black woman is to blame for so many of their problems. They took those historical archetypes mentioned above and built upon then with goldigger, haters, overly argumentative, etc. They ignore the fact that black women have reason to be this way because so many of us are the things that hold families together so we have to be the strong ones and not them.
I see that this is likely the narrative Jay-Z will try to spin about Solange. She will probably be labelled the angry black woman that apparently only lashes out because she is crazy.
“It doesn’t matter than she’s a woman and he’s a man, it doesn’t matter if she had a “reason” to be mad at him. She assaulted him repeatedly within the span of less than four minutes.”
THANK YOU. The number of people defending this is making me sick. We’re not going to overcome inequality by women attacking their brothers–in-law on elevators, ffs! And to defend a woman for this is to infantalize her.
I can’t help but wonder if some people would be defending her so much if she’d attacked a white man.
Anyway, we need someone who can read lips here.
Some of you really need to lighten up. If she had slapped him and tossed a drink in his face “a la Betty Davis” we would have all applauded. We don’t even know what it’s about so quit with the BS that “violence isn’t the answer” no sorry sometimes it is and fools need the taste slapped out their mouths. He’s not hurt nor did he get one scratch on his person so get over it already. Until they can say what exactly set her off. I’ll just finish with Blue Cantrell and ALL Jay’s ex’s THANK YOU SOLONGE!
Okay. I have experience with the crazy hot-buttoned drama queen types; my mother is one. It really doesn’t take very much AT ALL to set her off on a tirade. Just one teeny thing you did that bothers her can avalanche into a history of every wrong you’ve ever done her and how hard her life is because of you. And if you give her any — ANY — fuel by responding to her irrational attacks, it bursts into full on supernova in the time it takes to turn your head. It’s happened to me many many times as a child and young adult. My mother has hit me in the past, but luckily, she’s a small woman and I was an athlete and she was easy to dodge.
As to what could have set Solange off, I would venture that if she’s the type, like my mother, who gets surreal about every minor issue, who thinks everyone is out to sabotage her life out of malice, who thinks everything she deserved in life was unfairly taken away or given to someone else, then it was probably nothing, or next to nothing, that eventually snowballed into this rage.
Guaranteed if Bey and Jay were that cool about the hystrionics, they’ve seen it before and know that there was no real cause and there’s no real cure except to get away from it as quickly as possible for as long as possible.
Watching that video was like watching one of my mother’s rages. Bey and Jay reacted exactly how my father and I would react. Wish I’d had a body guard when I was younger.
Forget the actual fight I am really ticked that some lowlife sold the video to TMZ. People who have access to confidential information (this was the Met’s video) need to be punished for releasing stuff like this.
It was The Standard Hotels video, not The Mets.
I really love all of the arm chair therapists on here declaring that Bi Polarism doesnt express itself in violence. O’RLY!!!??? May I gently suggest you all research statistical correlation between incarcerated violent criminals and its link to Bi-Polarism.
My father is Bi Polar and one of the defining hallmarks of his personality is rage and uncontrolled violence. It is what it is. Deal with it and move along.
Firstly: the violence was wrong no matter what.
Now, onto the juicy stuff!! Apparently Rachael Roy and Jay Z once had a relationship before she married and later divorced his ex-partner Damon Dash. The fact that she was yelling at Roy right before this fight could suggest that she saw, or thought she saw some inappropriate behaviour between Jay and Roy.
Also, apparently Jay and Solange were spotted out shopping for women’s jewellery today in NYC. Interesting!
If the police see this footage, are they required to react?
I feel like Beyoncé is controlled by Jay Z, to a certain degree. I’ve felt like this for the longest time. I don’t care how old Solange’s fits may be. No normal person just stands there and says nothing. The most passive of people will not stand and watch their spouse get attacked by a family member. I definitely believe Jay Z did something awful (and in the video, his body language looks like he’s denying and trying to disassociate himself from the accusations Solange makes) and Solange got fed up and Beyoncé is on Solange’s side because she didn’t bother coming in between the two of them.
