Prince William confesses a love of Coldplay & Linkin Park during Centrepoint event

Prince William did another event without Duchess Kate yesterday. Which is fine, I guess, especially considering the event was for Centrepoint, which is one of William’s most long-standing patronages. Centrepoint deals with youth in crisis, homeless youth, and kids living in poverty. William spent a lot of time talking to kids/teens and being engaged and nice. He chatted about music and birthday cake.

When he’s not raising his heir or attending public engagements, Prince William may be jamming to Ghost Stories. The royal revealed he’s a big fan of Coldplay while speaking to school children Wednesday – though he declined to play drums with their samba band.

“I used to play the piano, trumpet and drums when I was your age but I couldn’t read music. There’s only so much you can remember from the top of your head,” he told one drummer at Goole High School in East Yorkshire, where he spent more than an hour chatting with students as he launched an award for primary schoolchildren as royal patron of the charity SkillForce.

When asked about his own musical tastes, reporters heard William, 31, reply, “I really like Coldplay, Linkin Park.”

Later in the day, the Duke of Cambridge moved on to West Yorkshire’s Bradford Foyer, a center for homeless youth run by his Centrepoint charity, for which he’s been a patron since 2005. The charity took over the running of the Bradford Foyer, along with six other hostels in the city, in November, and has since helped 328 young people across the city.

He met Josh Shaw, 22, and Ashley Bell, who told him it’s his 22nd birthday tomorrow. “There’s some cake next door I haven’t touched you can have,” William said, motioning to a function room he had just left.

Bell, who has been at the Bradford Foyer for four months, hopes to set up a car workshop called “Body Beautiful.” To laughs, William quipped “I thought that was something else.”

The charity’s chief executive Seyi Obakin told PEOPLE William wanted to come and “encourage” the residents. “He enjoy spending time with young people – this is always something he has been passionate about,” Obakin said.

Linkin Park? That’s unusual. I guess Coldplay is an obvious choice, especially when you’re a princeling. Coldplay is not controversial, and while people will disagree with you about the quality of Coldplay’s music, naming them as a “favorite” band won’t draw too many headlines. I would have loved if he’d said Adele though.

Meanwhile, it’s looking like it’s the Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh will be doing a three-day visit in France around the D-Day 70th anniversary event in Normandy. There were reports a few weeks ago that William and Kate would join them, but I guess Will and Kate aren’t traveling with the monarch? I think Will and Kate will meet up Elizabeth and Philip in Normandy. Go here to read about all of the amazing events and tributes the Queen will be part of in France. The French are really going all out for her. It’s nice. This is probably going to be one of her last overseas trips.

    His choices are very 2004.

    • RobN says:

I’m a big Waylon Jennings fan; I guess my choice is very 1968.

      You like what you like.

    • lunchcoma says:

Indeed. That kind of seems like him, though, doesn’t it? One of those guys who made a lot of his choices in life when he was in his early 20s and hasn’t bothered to invest in even superficial personal growth since?

    • Dani2 says:

Lol this was my first thought.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

      Lunchcoma
      Ouch
I’m emotionally connected to certain groups from my past. William also likes house and hip-hop but maybe that is not princely? At any rate the music you like is just that – the music you like, hardly an indication of character. William’s problem is that he’s boring.

  2. eliza says:

Well his bad taste in music is now confirmed.

  3. lunchcoma says:

Somehow this doesn’t surprise me at all.

I’ll admit I’m a little surprised no one ever taught him how to read music, though. I know there are other methods of teaching children to play, but I’ve found that having some understanding of how it’s written has increased my enjoyment in listening to it, especially music beyond the rock-pop spectrum.

  4. maybeiamcrazy says:

Linkin Park? A 30 something year old listening LP is just weird. LP is the band that every kid loves until they just realize just how bad they are. Well, he still has teenager mentality so maybe I shouldn’t be suprised.

    • Amy Tennant says:

Ooh, as a 41-year-old LP fan, I think I’ve just been dissed. Well, come over here and jam out to Linkin Park with me, Wills. We’ll be in bad company together.

    • laurie says:

Well, Amy I’ll up you on that. I’m a 62 year old LP fan. Love them! And Lunchcoma, “invest in even superficial growth since??” Judgemental much? Just because you liked something when you were 20, 30, 40 or whatever, what’s stopping you from continuing to like it? Yeesh!!

    • FLORC says:

I’m not yet 30 and only listen to LP when i’m in a bad mood or depressed. It’s just for me not music to put you in any kind of mood other than angsty and depressed.

      Laurie
We’re all a bit judgemental here. It’s why we’re here passing judgement/sharing thoughts.
I personally grew out of my depression that LP didn’t help and found I grew out of that group.

  5. AlexandriaTheGreat says:

Someone on another gossip blog had the best comment for this story:

“Prince William loving Coldplay is just about the best match of Band to Fan in the history of the world. Honestly, I really can’t imagine liking them unless you own a bunch of Castles.”

    • Birdix says:

Wasn’t Gwyneth annoyed not to be invited to the royal wedding? or am I projecting?

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

During a fundraiser Gwyneth dazzled the DOE and was touted as the belle of that particular ball. I can believe that in her mind the accolade should have translated into more exposure with the royals.

  6. Wilma says:

I can’t believe he’s four years younger than I am when it feels like he’s ten years older.

    • kri says:

Ohhh, LP. I wanted them to go play music under water the second I heard them, but I did not want aquatic life harmed, so whatever. William does seem older, but I think maybe because the heir is raised with such an awareness of the inevitability of his life? I dunno. LP rattled me!

  7. M.A.F. says:

Well, it’s not as if he can come out and say he loves Megadeth or Iron Maiden.

    • bettyrose says:

Especially since those bands are more age appropriate for his parents.

      • M.A.F. says:

Hell no they aren’t. Those are bands everyone can enjoy regardless of age. I grew up on bands my parents listen to and I still enjoy those bands to this day. I listed those bands because they don’t necessarily fall under “royal music”.

      • bettyrose says:

Okay, the prince should be listening to geriatric metal bands of the 80s. He’s not exactly rebelling against the tedium of a middle class suburban existence. Actually, maybe he could join the Middleton family for a rockin’ evening of aqua net and guitar rock.

    • FLORC says:

Some bands and songs are timeless. Led Zepplin, Dio, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden are all great examples. There was depth to those.
And I might like William more if he said he liked music that wasn’t so whiny. ColdPlay has it’s hits (and they’re great), but few songs that will last imo.

  8. ashley says:

What’s wrong with him loving coldplay? I have their latest album, ghost stories and it’s so good. “O” is one of the best songs i’ve heard in a while, everybody has diffrent taste in music.

    • littlestar says:

I love Coldplay like crazy, and I’m not ashamed to admit it! And yes, their new album is excellent (even though I think some of it kind of copies Bon Iver’s sound quite a bit). Cannot wait til they go on tour again, they put on a great show!

  9. Wren33 says:

Is Prince William just a basic bitch?

    • HH says:

You have no idea how hard I laughed at this!

    • Bucky says:

Yes! As soon as I saw this article, I sent the link to my best friend with the comment, “I always suspected the Cambridges were basic bitches.”

  10. dancinnancy says:

I’ll fess up to liking Coldplay though I haven’t bought an album since xx/xy or whatever they called it. Nostalgia!

Same thing with LP. Adored their first two albums. Would identify as a fan though I thought last 2/3 albums were “soft.” My December and Crawling and Numb are still my jams.

  11. Redheadwriter says:

At least he didn’t say Nickelback.

  12. HH says:

Damn! What a disappointment! I was expecting 2Chainz.

  13. AmandaPanda says:

I love sub-text of the exchange with the wannabe mechanic

WBM: “hello, I am homeless and trying to turn my life around – and it’s my birthday”

PW: “oh hai, they gave me lots of cake in there, but I get so much food and fancy stuff I didn’t even eat it – so you can have my leftovers if you go and get them yourself”

    nice work prince william

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

      Lol! William Antoinette.

    • hmmm says:

HaI Actually I wondered why William didn’t go grab a piece for the birthday boy. Erm…or get a lackey to do it.

This just makes me dislike him more.

  14. FLORC says:

Aside from the music taste… William is out and visiting a charity! Hurrah! And it shouldn’t even be a thing that Kate isn’t there. It’s truly William that needs to get moving. Being seen, Being engaged, being a working royal and not off looking for short lived fancies.

    • Tiffany says:

FLORC. I think that the reason that Kate is not with him is because the charities that she is a patron of or either in dire straits or no longer around. The press no longer are providing kid gloves for her and that is just a story they don’t need right now. So here is my question, if Will can do this charity events alone with no issue, why not Kate.

      • LAK says:

Kate is busy decorating and being a mother to PGtips [ps: don’t mention the large staff that are doing the work and therefore poking holes in my answer]

  15. wow says:

Wow he truly must be boring if this is the only thing they could get out of him.

  16. SoCal says:

Man, its amazing how much he looks like his mother, especially that nose.

  17. Lovelee85 says:

My saying is, “Never let anyone shame you for what type of music you like, or what books you read!” Lol That being said…I’m a 28 year old LF fan. I also jam out to the Lion King soundtrack…who wants to party?!

  18. Rick Cartel says:

His bad taste in music parallels with his bad taste in women. No class and no personality! Really, why can’t he even read music? That’s really scarry. I don’t think that makes him more modern just more uneducated. Whatever, he could use some piano lessons!
