I completely forgot that the Emmy nominations were coming out this morning. So this is a nice surprise! The Emmys are happening sort of early this year too – the ceremony will be held on August 25th on NBC. You can see the complete list of 2014 Emmy noms here at THR. There are some notable new nominations, mostly True Detective and Fargo, both of which were critic darlings and water cooler shows. There’s also some notably love for Benedict Cumberbatch (YES), Lizzy Caplan (YES), and The Normal Heart. Here are the big nominations/categories.

As I said, these are only the big categories – you can see the supporting categories here. While you know I love some Benedict Cumberbatch, I think Mark Ruffalo’s performance in The Normal Heart is going to win all of the awards (ditto for Matt Bomer in the same film). I think Louis CK will probably win Comedy Actor, maybe Amy Poehler for Comedy Actress? Matthew McConaughey is going to walk away with all of the TV awards for True Detective no matter what. Drama actress will be interesting… out of that list, I’m sort of thinking it should be Lizzy Caplan, but it probably won’t be. Anyway, thoughts? Notable omissions? I’m surprised there’s no Michael Sheen because he’s amazing on Masters of Sex.

“All of Our Imaginary Boyfriends Get Nominated”?
I see none of my imaginary boyfriends here. NONE.
*sniffs*
Yeah. It’s cruel, isn’t it? At least Kaiser is happy. Skin crawling sensations with MM.
WTH is Matt LeBlanc in, BTW?
MY god Matt LeBlanc is hysterical, it’s called Episodes and he plays himself in a fictional TV show written by 2 English characters who are quite popular here. Very funny I just watched the last (ssssh at work on iplayer) I never watched Friends but he is good in this.
Thanks, what station/channel produces it?
Matt plays a version of himself in Episodes on Showtime. It’s one of my favorites. It has a bit of a Brit wit to it given it’s about an English couple who are writers who are in the US producing a US version of their British hit.
Matt LeBlanc is their leading man. The Episodes Matt LeBlanc is much more interesting than the real one if his interview personality is anything to go by.
I have no showtime. Can you get it without having a subscription, like online?
It’s Showtime it says, it’s been renewed for a 4th season, Matt won a Golden Globe in 2012 for best actor in a comedy, it started in 2011 I think.
http://www.tv.com/shows/episodes/
Matt LeBlanc is in Episodes on Showtime. He’s already won a Golden Globe for his performance. He plays himself and the show is a comedic but spot-on send-up of life in Hollywood with all its excesses and phoniness.
Happy to see Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer got nominations for their work in The Normal Heart. Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory also did an outstanding job with his role and should have been nominated.
Yes, Episodes is amazing, and LeBlanc is excellent in it; the whole cast is (hello, cousin Ira!). He truly has great comic timing. Too bad the show Joey ruined things for him a while back.
I came around to Episodes. It really is a great show and he can carry a series. He”s been redeemed from his “Joey” days!
It’s kind of pricey on Amazon, though. Paying for the season may be more than or equal to actually paying for a subscription to all of Showtime.
I really enjoy episodes. It has a very pleasant sense of humor, it was a nice change of pace for when I was having Breaking Bad marathons!
Yes, but Kitten, that’s because WE really ARE going out with the Bloke. It’s just Kaiser’s green-eyed monster rearing its head.
I trust the mouthwash was the right flavour for you?
Well the Bloke is coming out with a new TV series next year, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for the future!
I don’t know what the mouthwash tasted like, Sixer, because Tommy and I didn’t kiss–we just boned like animals.
WHAT is this you speak of, Marty? A television show for My Bloke?
Gah @ Kitten.
Roll on, Peaky Blinders!
@TOK-

Whoa that looks awesome!
I never saw Knight’s “Locke” but my bro saw it at the film festival and said it was amazing.
Me neither :sigh:
I see no Hannibal here. Nomination failure.
Same here. Clicked because I hoped I’d see that photo of Bomer, beaming smile and award in hand at the Television Critic’s Awards. He looked so happy! Well deserved. Nice to read his name, but that was a great pic. He’ll get his awards with this role.
I know, right? Am I supposed to think Ruffalo is cute now? No thanks.
Louie!!
I love Louie too. I am glad he got some love!
I think his younger daughter did SUCH a great job this year. I dont know if I have ever seen such natural acting from such a young person.
Oh, I guess there’s no Pedro Pascal! That’s a damn shame.
You can still toss a photo up as a consolation prize.
The Pedro Pascal and Charles Dance snubs hurt 🙁
*Lift up arm, make a fist and scream “WWWWWHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???”* at the sky.
Then sob for Pedro. 🙁
Wait, I have a theory on that. I was quite disappointed this morning when I realized he was not nominated for guest actor in a drama because I want to see the dungeon scene between Peter Dinklage and him on every award show. Seriously, just give them both ALL the awards from now until the end of time. But maybe this past season of GoT was too close to nomination time to be considered? Maybe he’ll be nominated next year? Both Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are nominated for Breaking Bad this year even though it finished airing last year. So that’s my theory. Season 4 premiered too late for him to make the list this year, but maybe next year. Fingers crossed.
*Then, thanks to @Rae, the clouds parted, a ray of sunshine came through and hope emerged*
🙂
What does Tatiana Maslany have to do to get a nomination around here?
Yeah! I’d also like to ad Noel Fisher and Emmy Rossum.
Play about 6 different roles in such an amazing way that you forget it’s the same actress? Oh wait, she already DOES THAT!
Ditto for Walton Goggins. Boyd Crowder and Venus Van Damme? Come on!
I’m happy for Orange is the New Black, Veep, Fargo, Breaking Bad, and a few others here and there, but overall it’s the same old same old. Modern Family still? I still enjoy it, but it’s not the best. And WTF Downton Abbey??? It’s a soap opera in a fancy setting. Again I enjoy it, but it should not be getting so many nominations.
Seriously. I just binge watched Orphan Black and she is f’ing amazing in that (those) role/s. Wonderful show.
On another note, as someone who still misses Breaking Bad every goddamned day, I need Bryan Cranston and BB to win, even though they won’t. Grrrr. I thought BC got robbed last year.
@Kate2 As Heisenberg would say, you’re goddamn right……”
@Spookyspooks–agree abt Rossum & Fisher. Glad Macy got a nod but Shameless is a SHAMEFULLY overlooked show.
I also am tired of BBT Modern family Downton etc–it’s just laziness and name recognition, herd mentality sometimes. I think Parsons SHOULD have been nominated, but for Normal Heart.
I agree wholeheartedly! Michelle Dockery over Tatiana? WTF????
This is baffling!
Also, nothing for The Americans?
Boo!
ITA!!! Tatiana Maslany is flawless in Orphan Black! I love Downton as much as the next person, but Michelle Dockery has nothing on Maslany. Heck, if I had to choose someone from Downton other than Maggie Smith, it would be Penelope Wilton…
I just read the list and am in shock she’s not on it. Obviously if any of the nominating committee had seen OB, she would have been, which suggests they haven’t seen it. Can they really be that out of touch?
Their was only an outside chance that Orphan Black and Tatiana Maslany would get an Emmy nod..Which is really to bad because it’s fantastic show. The Emmys have become like the Oscars. Same old same old.
SERIOUSLY.
It’s criminal that Tatiana was not nominated. Completely unbelievable.
Delurking after countless years to shout so much WORD for this. Tatiana is so brilliant!!!
SO MUCH THIS!!!
No Tatiana Maslany = This list is useless.
If it makes everyone feel better, please read this:
http://www.pajiba.com/seriously_random_lists/the-25-most-egregious-emmy-nomination-snubs-of-all-time-.php
ITA!!
And it isn’t even just that she plays so many characters. She makes each character so FULL OF LIFE! I have separate affection for them all, they really do seem like totally different actresses in my head.
EXACTLY! I was basically saying just this to a friend at lunch today. Ms. Maslany is an amazing actress!!! Her nuanced performance of Sara playing Allison had the recovery/treatment center was stunningly brilliant.
So very, very brilliant!
I just heard Season 3 was picked up, so at least we have more to look forward to! I dont’ think I can wait that long though…will definitely have to rewatch Seasons 1 and 2 before then!
Ignoring her again borders on criminal. She deserves a nomination for any one of her performances — and she gives us SIX of them.
I’m pretty satisfied with the noms this year, although I wish The Returned (Les Revenants) could have been nominated somehow. Also I don’t understand why American Horror Story is designated a miniseries and True Detective is not? They both change casts or storylines each season, no?
I loved The Returned (zombies rule, ok) – can’t wait for S2. I think it already won an international Emmy, didn’t it?
Not sure, but I believe it did. I’ve been trying to give The Leftovers a chance, but I keep thinking that it would be so much better if it had some of tone of The Returned, you know? Kind of low key and naturalistic
If you can find a way to watch it, the BBC’s In The Flesh is an AWESOME take on zombies. In a way, similar to The Returned but without the supernatural tones – “kitchen sink” zombies, if you like.
Only been 1 season of True Detective ?? I loved that show and have a feeling either one of them could win, and Mark Ruffallo too might wipe out Cumberbatch. I didn’t like the last series of Sherlock although I know many did. Love Orphan Black too she is really good in it. Modern Family good but enough it’s not as good as it use to be. Love love Veep though.
Oh Orphan Black is good!!
Normal Heart will sweep a lot of them, just watch.
No Tatiana Maslaney for Orphan Black!?!! FOR SHAME!!!!
This A MILLION TIMES!!!!!!
Also no Katey Sagal. The last few seasons of Sons of Anarchy have not been the best, but I’ve always thought Katey’s acting was always on point.
Yes to both! Such a shame.
ITA – IMO, Katy Sagal has been robbed hard core since Season 2 of SOA. She’s always sublime regardless of whatever nonsense is going on around her on that show.
I know. I said it upthread but it bears repeating. She’s AMAZING in Orphan Black. Simply amazing and I can’t believe she wasn’t even nominated. That’s a major snub if I ever saw one.
It was such a major snub last year that I can’t believe this year they didn’t try to make up for it with a nomination.
I agree Lucy…they should be ashamed of their mistake last year, I can’t believe they repeated it again. And even in light of her winning the Critic’s Choice two years in a row!
Why does Bryan Cranston still get nominations for Breaking Bad? I thought BB ended long time ago.
Sorry, duplicate.
It ended in 2012 or 2013. Have you ever seen the show? If you had, you probably wouldn’t complain about it.
He’s amazing. I said it above, I miss BB so much its ridiculous. It ended last September or October so its eligible this year.
Sucks that Michelle Monaghan didn’t get a nom for True Detective.
Yes! I though she was great in that. her part was more subtle than Matthew and Woody’s (although they are fantastic in all ways) but I think she played it beautifully. It would be a poorer series without her, i think.
I thought she did in Supporting Actress.
Tatiana Maslany plays 87 characters, makes everyone’s meals, is the sound editor, and files everyone’s income taxes each year (and she’s Canadian). How did she not get nominated???
I’m glad Lena Headey did for supporting.
I’m happy for Lena too.
Abbott – your comment is hilarious… and so true.
LOl, love it! 😀
Ok, just looked over the complete list and have to say I’m pretty disappointed that neither Norman Reedus or Melissa McBride were nominated. 🙁
THIS. They both did some amazing work on Walking Dead this past year.
Agreed. Grmph.
I love me some Reedus, but I thought McBride’s performance in the second to last episode (we know which one I’m talking about – LIZZIE) was better than anyone else on the show.
If its any consolation, she won a Saturn award for her performance this year. The Walking Dead seems to get no love with the Emmy’s though.
I know it’s really becoming obvious that there’s some kind of industry blackout regarding TWD. Anyone have any idea why?
No idea. Could be the genre. Maybe horror/drama isn’t taken seriously enough for votes. Too bad. Andrew Lincoln, Lenny James and David Morrissey all had Emmy worthy performances for their roles as well, IMO.
Melissa M has me madder than all the rest. She should’ve won not just been nominated too.
THIS!
They both did great work on TWD this year, but Melissa was AMAZING!!!
Look at the flowers Lizzie 😳
Not to nitpick, but Samira Wiley should have gotten the Guest nod over Laverne Cox. Laverne’s character wasn’t really featured much this season.
I have to agree – I love every character and actress on the show (except for Larry and Polly, who should just GO) but Samira really was extraordinary, and Laverne’s role was fairly small this season.
She was so great this season! She would havebeen my first choice to be singled out.
I think Lorraine Toussaint should have been nominated instead of Laverne. I don’t think she’s a good actress. Samira overacted in my opinion. Uzo is phenomenal, and I hope she snatches the trophy.
Agreed but the nomination is based on Season One, due to the timing of when it was released.
Ah, that makes sense, thanks. Hopefully Samira gets nominated next year for Season 2.
Where is Keri Russell? Why does Shameless get snubed every frickin year? Emmy Rossum and Noel Fisher were absolutely amazing. Why on Earth is Downton Abbey nominated for best drama series? Why is Kerry Washington nominated? Why is Bellamy Young not nominated?
I’m quietly weeping for Noel, Shameless and the only real portrayal of poverty in America.
my thoughts exactly. What-the-hell? -.-
also, The Americans. Matthew Rhys is brilliant there and sooo underrated.
I agree about Shameless. Emmy and Noel should have been nominated. They have been robbed so many times.
Why does it seem that the Emmy voters watch the shittiest shows available on tv, and ignore the quality?
No hannibal!!! Mads or dancy or tatiana!!!!
I really don’t want McConaughey to take it away from Bryan Cranston. And Aaron Paul either. That last season of BB was phenomenal and it’d be a shame if they lost
Yeah I’m rooting for Cranston. McConaughey got his Oscar this year, and while he was great on TD, no one comes close to Cranston as Walter White, IMO.
I agree Tess. I also think Anna Gunn should have been nominated for Lead Actress.
I totally agree, she is a brilliant actress and really deserves the win so does Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul BB was the best series ever I will never forget so many scenes from that series especially when Jessie was in the go karts with If I Had a Heart as the background track .. so powerful
THIS THIS THIS +100000
McConaughey got an Oscar this year, he doesn’t need an Emmy too, especially at the expense of Cranston.
Yes! Bryan Cranston should win (or had won) for every freaking BB season.
He’s that good.
+ 1,000,0000. The last season of BB, which this nom covers, was the most intense, face melting , could not look away, grab you by the throat, put you through the wash, rinse & spin cycle, have you hiding, trembling under the coach, and then spit u out stunned speechless with THE most perfect series final in the history of television. I cannot believe any performance could match the intensity if the final desperation, monstrosity, and destruction of Walt or the total torture of Aaron Paul’s character. The show also managed to force the viewer into a kind of empathy and complicity with Walters crimes right through the years and then made you question your own character and complicity. It was the true cathartic experience of Classical Greek tragedy and Shakespeare too.
Best. Show. Ever.
Cumby and Martin both nominated! In the same category! Well, sometimes little girls’ wished do come true.
I know- but I feel sorry for Tumblr. 😉
As much as I love Sherlock’s first and second seasons, I have to give a big NOPE to the third season. Yes, I’m looking forward to seeing Tuxedo!Batch, but this season was just disappointing.
Can’t help but feel that with exceptions of the few newer things (Normal Heart, True Detective, Fargo) it’s just the usual ones in a lot of the major categories. Orphan Black, The Americans, Game of Thrones and Walking Dead to name but a few all had moments of Emmy worthy acting in them but are ignored year after year for the same nominations.
Downton Abbey shouldn’t be nominated for anything, it’s a fancy soap opera. As much as I think Michelle Dockery is pretty, her acting is so wooden (and yes I know that’s partially the character but come on!)
I’m glad Joanne Froggatt was nominated. Her acting in the scene Anna was raped was splendid. But other than that this was Downton’s worst series.
Downton Abbey nominations make me roll my eyes every year! But to be fair, the US seems to get very little of the UK’s good stuff, so there isn’t much to choose from with regards to our shores.
Did you watch Edge of Darkness? My goodness, how it’s dated. I don’t know if I can watch it all.
Sixer I am quite enjoying Edge of Darkness -just not sure about the politics -but u missed an episode and you cannot catch up which is annoying. I have only ever watched two episodes of Downtown and one was the “he walks again ” episode. Rolled my eyes and never watched it since.i was please Chiwetel Ejiofor got nominated for Dancing on the Edge I really enjoyed that series.
You’re right about Downton. I love it-but the characters and story lines are just silliness.
i thought/heard breaking bad and true detective would be on separated category…?. Bryan Cranston vs Matthew McConaughey
Wow… Taylor Kitsch was the only one who didn’t make it from The Normal Heart.
NO Michael Sheen? Outrageous. Still no Tatiana Maslany. Outrageous 2. Nice to see OITNB’s Taylor Schilling on the list, but that whole cast is frickin’ amazing. Where’s Shameless? I hope Lizzy Caplan scores it, but only until next year when my girl Eva Green sweeps all the awards.
“NO Michael Sheen? Outragrous.”
THIS! WTH?
I am happy that Lizzy Caplan, Beau Bridges and Allison Janney (she is amazing!) were rightfully nominated for Masters, but why the Sheen snub?! He is so good!!! I could easily make a case for Sheen over Daniels and Hamm (no offense to Hamm fans).
he is SO good and didn’t even pay attention to him before. So weird. Also, Matthew Rhys of The Americans. Similar but more subtle brilliance. Shame, shame..
I haven’t seen The Americans, but it is on my queue of programs to binge.
Still shaking my head over the Sheen thing. Did these Emmy voters see the name Sheen and get confused with Charlie or something? It’s the only explanation.
@mia girl or Martin 😀 I don’t know, the whole system is weird, I had to read twice the reason why True Detective is a drama and Fargo a miniseries and still half get it.
Give Americans a try, it’s not alll the craze but it builds up well 🙂
I still can’t believe Sons of Anarchy gets snubbed EVERY year. Last season was the best acting of the entire series.
I came here to say the exact same thing. Unfreakingbelievable!
Yup. Every year. No idea why either..there’s some fantastic acting on that show.
On another note, I think the playing field has gotten a lot wider since the inception of The Sopranos 15 years ago.
That show really paved the way for so many amazingly well-written and well-acted shows that proceeded it.
I think there’s just more competition out there, which makes it more challenging in regards to nominations.
Still no excuse for SOA to not get a nom though.
I agree. It use to be only a few shows that were relly well written and acted , now there are great shows on every network.
I haven’t been crazy about every storyline SoA has done, but the acting has gotten better every year. Katy Sagal and Maggie Siff were just outstanding this past season.
No Michael Sheen? I also think Caitlin FitzGerald deserves a nomination, but I guess she’d then compete with Lizzy?
And can we stop nominating Matthew McConnaughey for awards? It cheapens the category. What was Kristin Wiig nominated for?
What???? no Eva Green !!!! she is magnificent in Penny Dreadful!
Probably not eligible for the time, it only finished airing and as far as I know there is a cut off date for considerations.
She should be ok for next year though.
Yeah, I assume the cut-off is to blame. After finishing the last three episodes, I said exactly what I said about Chiwetel last year: give that actor ALL THE AWARDS. She is absolutely phenomenal.
Did anyone else notice that THR listed The Normal Heart characters’ names instead of the actor’s names as nominees for best supporting actor in a drama movie or miniseries?
Tommy Boatwright and Felix Turner??? That would be Jim Parsons and Matt Bomer respectively… Weird!!
I am so tired of Mad Men being nominated year after year. Its so boring anymore. So happy to see Orange is the New Black and Fargo on the list because those shows are awesome. And You go Janis Ian!
and I’m one of the few few people who think Breaking Bad is so very meh but then I know a few meth addicts and that show just reminds me of them and how fcked their lives are.
God, those nominations are a mess, imo.
Jesus, the love for The Big Bang Theory and Downton abbey are embarrassing. I watch Downton abbey, it can be fun (but it’s mostly boring now) but it’s not an award worthy serie. It’s just a soap opera with beautiful costumes and a big castle. Same for the White queen. What the hell, the serie was a mess. So the americans just loves period costumes… They keep nominating Downton Abbey and they snub Master of Sex in the best drama category, wtf. And I agree that Michael Sheen was superb in the show.
And there is no love for Orphan Black ??? It was a good opportunity to nominate a show with a real heroine which is so rare. But nope, fucking Downton abbey was their choice, again. Sigh. And where is Tatiana Maslany? This young actress is wonderful. I love Michelle Dockery, she seems like a lovely woman but she did almost nothing in the last season. She was sad, depressed, pouted, she wore black, she flirted a bit, she runs after pigs… So, this year someone like Lena Dunham is nominated as best actress (in comedy) – when she just plays a version of herself – but Tatiana who plays 6 or 7 different characters is snubbed…. Pfff.
On a positive note, I’m happy for Mark Ruffalo and Chiwetel Ejiofor. And yeah for Lizzy Caplan and Allison Janney! They are both awesome and wonderful in master of sex. Also, I prefer Lena Headey’s nomination for game of thrones than Emilia Clarke (like next year). I like Emilia, and the kaleshi, it could be an awesome character, but she does almost nothing on the show.
Booooo Emmy awards. It’s only an award show, but still. They prefer to nominate the same shows (or actors) again and again, rather than acknowledge the real standout. Same for the academy award.
End of the rant XD
I agree Kheleesi is te most boring character on that show that’s my toilet break when she comes on. Never watched Downton Abby and Michelle Dockery is boring and wooden same as in Non Stop
Is it just me it or is it awkward to get a star (Mindy) to read out the noms and not give her one?
Anyway I’m pretty happy with most of the Emmy nominations. Pretty mad Sons Of Anarchy was snubbed. Charlie Hunnam was at his best this season. What a shame
Mindy was robbed she and her show deserved a nomination. Well the show deserved several.
LOL @ the title! 😀
Robin Wright all the way!! Hope she wins. It would be nice to see Minnie Driver win as well.
Benny and Martin for the same award!! How sick is that? Who to choose? Wouldn’t it be insane if Martin won? And I know the buds will be happy for each other if either win. These two have had a tremendous couple of years, especially together.
Let’s make it simple: Mark Ruffalo wins instead! I’d be totally happy with that 🙂
Albert Tsai should have been nominated for Trophy Wife. That kid has such amazing comedic timing, it’s unreal.
Travesty! No George Blagden, Travis Fimmel or Clive Standen? No Katheryn Winnick either? Gustaf Skarsgard? MOVE ALONG NOTHING HERE TO SEE.
* throws ancient Danish popcorn bowl down in disgust, stalks off*
With you! I started watching Vikings purely at the behest of Sixlet Major and with no expectations. Now I’m a total convert!
almost forgot about those! great cast, even though I kind of given up mid-season :/
Yay, Sixer!! RIght? Right? Protest on the hill! 🙂
Come on, BAC, catch up and join us!
Yes, this! No Vikings nominations? No Travis Fimmel? Booo 😀
I like Bellamy Young, I think she is better than Kerry on Scandal. I thought she could be nominated since the show is popular and she steals the show, imo .
Spoilers:
Both Mellie and Anna (Joanne Froggatt) were raped in the shows, it was totally unnecessary, gratuitous and offensive. The first episodes of Downton Abbey were just boring, and it was so obvious they throw a rape scene just to spice things up, ugh…. And in Scandal they wanted to make Mellie more likable. I hate it when a female character become a rape victim because the writers think it will make her more interesting, likable, or add some drama. It’s cheap, lazing and offensive. They should find something else for a character development. Seriously they add gratuitous rape scenes in tv shows everywhere. Even in some “historical shows” when the female character wasn’t even a rape victim. Exemples: Borgias or The tudors. Or in Game of thrones: Cersei wasn’t abused by her brother in the book, they just keep adding more violence toward women for the spectacle, disgusting. And the show keep getting even more successful.
Claire Danes??!?!?!?!?
What tomfoolery is this? Homeland and was such a disaster last season, that I don’t even think they should be allowed to come to the awards show, never mind nominating any of them for an award! And that is coming from a fan of the show.
And I guess Dinklage has to wait until next year to be rewarded for the BRILLIANCE that was Tyrion Lannister this season.
Dinklage was nominated thank God.
That awkward moment when the best actress in a drama is not nominated for best actress in a drama.
Tatiana should have won the category with little to no competition – not even being nominated is a slap in the face.
Nice to see a lot of love for Orphan Black,Maybe we should start a petition.?
Taniana and Orphan Black are trending on twitter world wide right now.
WOOO HOO!
Also getting a shout out on Buzzfeed
http://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/why-it-doesnt-really-matter-at-all-that-tatiana-maslany-didn
If they don’t give it to Bryan Cranston for his extraordinary swan song as Walter White, then we will know the Emmys are rigged. He was nothing short of miraculous – bringing the character full circle.
I haven’t seen True Detective and I know it’s great but Breaking Bad MUST WIN. And also if Bryan Cranston walks away empty handed then we all know that these award shows lack common sense.
Bryan Cranston for the win.
I’ve seen True Detective and yes, Bryan Cranston FTW
I really, really enjoyed TD, but Cranston is just on a whole other level. He isn’t just entertaining, he is powerful and moving.
IMO, Breaking Bad is the best TV series I have ever seen in my life. I don’t know if there will ever be another series that will match their incredibly high quality of storytelling from begining to end the way BB did.
Mark Ruffalo!!!!! Yeah! What a day, Mark Ruffalo and Ralph Fiennes pics in one day *cranks up the air conditioning* boy it is getting hot in here
I know all the other shows in the Drama category are fantastic, but honestly this year better be all about breaking bad! I really hope Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, and Aaron Paul take home awards. Oh, and Vince Gilligan in the directing and writing category. Gilligan is such a genius! I’ve loved him since his work on the X-Files
What the Odin!!! No Travis Fimmel? No Vikings?!
Clearly they wouldn’t know a great cast & show if it smacked them in the face with a battle axe!
Totally agree! He and the show are amazing 😉
Oh I adore Vikings.
“What the Odin!” LOL! Totally agree with you.
…cough*Hollow Crown*cough…
Wouldn’t Hollow Crown have been last year?
No Hollow Crown was this year. It was on the list of for consideration by PBS. I think Dancing on the Edge was also on PBS’s list. I suspect Hollow Crown was just to specialised and did not receive a wide enough viewing to be included.
I looked at a few sites which were doing predictions and only the show and actors were always considered outsiders or long shots.
Thanks Icerose! I watched it earlier this year on Amazon, so I wasn’t quite sure when it came out on TV. 🙂
There must be a mistake because WHERE THE F IS TATIANA MASLANY’S NAME? She’s not just good, she’s amazing. The best I’ve ever seen in TV.
Seriously? What the heck does Katy Sagal have to do to get recognized for her work on Sons of Anarchy?
I can excuse the show for not getting recognized as a whole. I don’t think that the last few seasons have been as good as the first few seasons. I can even let go of the fact that Charlie Hunnam wasn’t nominated, but Katy Sagal is so amazing in that show that I just can’t understand why she keeps being overlooked.
I’m not really a conspiracy theorist, but I’m starting to think that Kurt Sutter was right in his past ranting about the show and awards.
I agree, it’s sad SOAnarchy is overlooked. Katy Sagal does amazing work on the show, as well as several other actors.
Emmy nominations can be even more tiresome than Oscar ones. Downton Abbey is not one of the six best shows on TV, at least not anymore. The same is true of Modern Family, and The Big Bang Theory never was a good show. True Detective was great, but it’s not a series. It’s a miniseries, and should have to compete in that category, just as American Horror does.
Along with others, I’d like to see some more recognition of Orphan Black and The Americans.
+10000000000
No love for Orphan black or Tatiana Maslany, What a shame.
I downloaded A Normal Heart weeks ago but haven’t got around to watching it. Thinking I’m going to have to watch this weekend. Sounds like am missing something great!
Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell shut out AGAIN???!!!!!!? I can only imagine that the voters mistook Matthew McConaghy and Kerri Washington’s names for theirs. That is the only logical explanation for no love for The Americans’ leads.
I’d add Julianna Margulies to that list. I just don’t get The Good Wife. I’ve seen like 5 episodes, and didn’t like it at all.
It’s obviously time for the Emmys to add categories, in light of TV being in such a Golden Age and attracting big stars.
“Miniseries OR movie”? Just add some categories to correlate with what TV is becoming.
Maybe a special “Hall of Fame” award for a series like Cranston’s that’s now ended, and for his work — an award for all its seasons’ consistent excellence. And for past series like The Sopranos. Induct a bunch of them as this year’s theme. Mad Men will end up honored there when it’s over, even if it’s been slighted up to now.
Then the current shows can have an Emmy too.
The Emmys miss the mark a lot. Remember that Bob Newhart didn’t win an Emmy until a few years ago when he guest starred on the Big Bang Theory. Tatiana was robbed YET again. To watch that and forget it is the same actress playing all those roles is an incredibly amazing show of talent. No noms for Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys? Shameless being ignored? Michael Sheen being snubbed? No Hannibal? Ugh. But nods for freaking Downton Abbey, Modern Family, and the Big Bang Theory?? Is my mom doing the nominating (no offense to my mom, but she has some awful taste in television). Lets just hope Jeff Daniels doesn’t win again this year (no offense to Jeff Daniels, but the Newsroom is blah).
I’ve been so irked all day about Tatiana Maslany’s snub that I just barely realized my man Idris got a much-deserved nomination for Luther! So I’ll give the Emmys a “woo” but no “hoo” for now.
I’m so beyond confused/annoyed/shocked over the Good Wife not getting a Drama series nom and even worse no writing/directing ones either. What kind of crack are they emmy voters smoking??
What all these comments reveal is that we have some seriously good television being produced right now. Am I right?
Did anyone else even notice that The Walking Dead was snubbed?I love that show only because of Daryl,he’s such a bad a$$.
Yes for Breaking Bad and Matthew Mcconaughey.
Someone tweeted: I want Kanye to get on stage and say “YOU KNOW WHO DESERVES THIS NOMINATION? TATIANA MASLANY!”
It would actually be quite funny if he did that.
Also, why was Fargo nominated as a mini-series? I thought it was an on going series.
Welcome to the mysteries of Emmy classifications – funny shows are dramas, melodramatic shows are comedies, limited episode series are Dramas, Miniseries and Movies, and recurring series show up everywhere.
I’m sure someone, somewhere could come up with new categories that would make sense* but I’m not sure the Academy would welcome the change.
*The former science major/business consultant in me is sure that there is some logical categorization that could be done…something MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) or like the biological taxonomy, but that still wouldn’t prevent the Academy from nominating folks from Modern Family or Downton Abbey or The Newsroom for less than stellar seasons, so it’s probably not worth the effort.
There is some seriously good television going on right now. There is so much to choose from, and the Emmys managed to get some of it right. I mean, a year in which I agree that Mad Men and The Good Wife might not have been the best that TV has to offer? Who would have thought?
Though they still have some tired noms that they just have to make year after year, even if the quality doesn’t support it, or the “when in doubt, nominate the movie actor” mentality shows through,
And at the same time, they also missed out on some really good shows/performances: Nick Offerman from Parks and Rec, and Orphan Black ….I haven’t seen a whole episode, but from even just the pieces I’ve seen, it’s obvious Tatiana Maslany is fantastic. Well, I guess more amazing things will come her way in the future – Emmy noms aren’t everything.
I’m glad Sherlock and Fargo had a good showing in the nominations – both were fantastic IMO, especially the performances. (The quibbles I had with S3 Sherlock were primarily in the first episode, and Fargo would have been absolutely perfect if they hadn’t sidelined Molly in the last episode)
But though I thought Matt Bomer was amazing (and a surprise to me) in The Normal Heart and I’m thrilled with his nomination, neither Julia Roberts nor Mark Ruffalo’s performances worked for me (and I say that as a fan of Ruffalo…I sat through We Don’t Live Here Anymore 3 times for him and Peter Krause) they dragged me out of the story in TNH every time – too strident, cold, OTT. And the director didn’t do them or the narrative any favors. I can see why IRL those people might have behaved like that, there was so much on the line, but it didn’t work for me in a film.
Sad there is no nom for the Skarsgardner, but happy my new boyfriend Jimmy Fallon got two! Yay!
Wow, who knew Martin Freeman would look so good in a suit? Good Heavens, Dr. Watson…. even if he got nominated for Fargo.
