Anna Paquin just finished taping a seven-season run on HBO’s True Blood, and she’s celebrating in grand style with a new hair color. Make that three new hair colors. Anna had to keep her hair blonde for so long, and now she’s having some fun. Anna made her big reveal on her Twitter page with the following caption: “Just fulfilled my teen dream of being a mermaid.” The main color is a very vibrant purple, and she has streaks of turquoise and green flowing throughout. It’s a deep-sea ombre, and it looks so cool, right?
Anna’s purple is so much bolder than that of recent stars who have gone lavender. Kelly Osbourne’s been a light purple for years. Ireland Baldwin and Nicole Richie briefly joined the club (Nic has recently switched to solid blue hair). I think Anna’s transformation is the boldest of them all. Her husband, Steven Moyer, is in favor of this change and tweeted his support.

Anna appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers earlier this week. She discussed how this season’s flashbacks of True Blood reminded her that her pre-baby rack was much bigger than her post-baby one. She curses on television and doesn’t even notice. Then she said, “OK, I’ve been on HBO for too long. I’m sorry, so post-breastfeeding breasts…” Would you desire a clip?

I don’t like the hair on her. It’s a very pretty color combo on it’s own, but it’s bad on her. And in a week or 2 (sooner without color safe washes) it will grow out and look bad.

I am getting grey hairs galore in my brunette mop, and I’ve dyed them purple. I love it! It’s very subtle, and I get to have the manic panic hair I always wanted when I couldn’t double process my hair before.

Why too old? We are the same age and actually look quite a bit alike, so I’ve been told, and I play regularly with pink. I’m an artist and a stay at home mom so I am free of any fun hampering rules and I say why not. When does one get too old? Look at women like Betsy Johnson, who has made creative hair part of her very brand, who decides this too old noise?

Rock on elo, as weird as this might sound, I never felt more ‘me’ than when I had pink hair. I really don’t get all this ageist crap that mandates when you’re too old to be creative and fun with your appearance.

I’m with you – and that’s not JUST because, well. (glances in mirror and sees the hot pink, purple, blue and neon green blazing through the bleached white blond hair) I constantly do oddball colors. It’s ~just~ hair. It can change on it’s own a dozen times in a lifetime (I was born with black, it went bright red, then was a white blond until I was 8 when a short haircut turned it dark. I was nicknamed “Calico’ as a kid for good reason!), it falls out, gets thicker, has random cowlicks in it – and that’s all just as it comes out of the head! Never have understood the idea that oddball colors somehow are childish or unprofessional. As long as it’s clean and safe (no long long flowing loose hair when working in a garage, for example) what does it matter? I own my home, am married, pay my taxes… pretty much a massively responsible person. So what matters about hair? Have fun with it, life is too freaking short!
I’m 45, with two kids and we’ve been living on tour with Cirque for years. I had bright blue streaks for a year a couple years ago and have had BRIGHT red streaks for the last six months. Why? Because I like it and my lifestyle allows for it.
Have fun in life, wear whatever color makes you happy. You can still look beautiful and sophisticated, even with crazy streaks of color in your hair. Hair color shouldn’t define you as a person or denote your age, it is HAIR COLOR.
Also Florc, if you use good hair color fading should not be an issue, Mine stays in for months and months. Pravana chroma silk vivids is the be-all, end-all of bright hair color.
I lucked out. I work in an office, but my job isn’t customer facing 🙂 I just have to chat with them on the phone, work on their websites, and have whatever I want for hair!

It’s not a matter of quality product. Around day 5 it just doesn’t look as nice. My natural color has highlights no matter what. I’m likely bias seeking my natural highlights in different colors and tones. I have a friend always looking for colorful dyes so i’ll pass that brand on. I’m dye free for about 8 or 9 years at this point.
Although, no matter how nice the dye is it always grows out.
To the hair. I like it. It’s lovely. I dont care for it on her though and that’s ok.

FLORC, this stuff is markedly different. I basically get no fading at all. I have intensely colored hair all the time. TOK can vouch for it.
I dye over it when I get sick of having that color, but I’ve been able to maintain saturated color as long as I am careful. No hot water, no chlorine and no sulfates. When I had my hair done last time at Toni and Guy the red they put in faded in a week. I put on the pravana and it is six months later and the color is still gorgeous.
I am a nut about faded color, I hate it.

It would be equally cool to do at 45. Or 68. Who cares about the age as long as she’s having fun? Now, personally I think she looks best with her natural hair color but oh well.

Is it the most flattering? No, but I like that she went for it, with a couple of kids no less. I imagine her doing it truly to fulfill a “teenage dream” rather than following the recent trend. Also Moyer seems to adore her, so that’s cute.
Now if Moyer would dye his hair light blue to match.that would be fun and it would suit himj.

I agree. Don’t really like the look, and definitely won’t after a few weeks of washing, but she’s been required to keep her hair a certain way for many years, and it’s natural to want to take control back in a big way. It’s like guys leaving the army and growing their hair out just because they can…

When I had a back injury and knew I couldn’t dance ballet for a year – I shaved my head. It was liberating. I can’t imagine having to keep basically the same hair for 7 years!
I have always had a fantasy about shaving my head (until I had cancer, then it didn’t seem very appealing because it wouldn’t be my choice, and btw I’m fine now) but never had the nerve. Did your new hair grow back in the same? I had a friend who did that and her formerly curly hair came back in straight.

Yes – I’m Native American so my hair is just super straight… sadly. That didn’t change at all. But I have heard of people shaving and having it come back different – funny!

One of my friends shaved her wavy hair and it grew out extremely curly. She loved it.

Yikes. I hate it. I love bold colors, but I find this is not flattering at all, the blonde was 1000000x better, as it Kelly Osbournes and Nicole Richie’s lavender do’s. However, if it makes her happy, then that is what matters! Her hair does not exist to please other people, so it shouldn’t be about what we think 🙂
It might not be something I would do, but if she’s happy with it, that is all that matters. I get the feeling Moyer would support her no matter what.

The colors are really pretty, but not ones I’d chose for hair. But she is happy with it amd having fun.
As much as Sookie amd Bill bug me, I like Anna and Stephen a lot, and her story about her trailer was cute.
I’m meh on the hair. I’m sitting with second hand embarrasement for her and Stephen’s twitter conversation though. It’s kind of gross – sort of d-list level, like Kate Bosworth and her husband :O
I find twitter convos between spouse/partners weird too, though maybe he just hadn’t seen it yet? Unless they make a habit of it I wouldn’t tarnish her with the Bosworth comp. though. they are generally pretty private and not try hard like the Bosworth brand.

I’m with Mrs. Darcy; they don’t do this regularly, so I think it was just a sweet show of support. She might have even been nervous about the reaction, so he wanted to be among the first to jump in and cheer her on.
Also, this isn’t just a husband complimenting his wife’s hair color; this is a co-star responding to the official end of a character. True Blood was a life-changing experience for them both, and I think his response is just as symbolic as her color change.
The only person on True Blood more intolerable than Joe BowlofJello is this woman.
I think it’s cute, I guess she doesn’t have any jobs lined up right away though, this look will probably be gone soon. I never liked the trashy blonde on her (I know it was for the role), think she’s much prettier brunette.

Yes to the “trashy blonde”… she and I have very similar facial structures (this isn’t a brag; I’m nowhere near as beautiful, but strangers point it out, so I’ll take it), and I’ve never been able to pull off lighter color hair. Hell, I dye it darker when the sun takes my natural brown too close to dirty blonde. It just washes out my face and makes my dark eyes/eyebrows stand out.
ANYway, when she went blonde for True Blood, it took a long time for me to adjust to the character’s look; I think I was reacting to my own hang-ups about staying dark. I love that she’s experimenting and being playful now that she finally can, but I can’t WAIT to see her brunette again. She’s aged well, and it will look even better than before.
I agree with you guys about the really-light blonde on Paquin.
I used to have VERY light blonde hair and I really loved it at the time, but looking back it seemed a bit harsh. It’s a very difficult color to pull of. After trying every color under the sun, I’ve decided that brown with caramel highlights or a medium golden blonde are the most flattering shades on me.
Totally agree-blonde is not Anna’s color at all. Skin, eyes etc are brunette. However, I love that she just decided to go crazy with her color. My job doesn’t allow for that-I’m only rebelling by not cutting it-who says anyone over 45 can’t have hair that’s passed their shoulders?
I love the colors even though I don’t think it’s particularly flattering on her. She’s happy and that’s all that really matters.

I always love these multi-color looks… at first.
I have a whole lot of hippie friends/acquaintances who do this rainbow ombre regularly, and I’ve never, ever known one who didn’t look terrible within a week. I think it’s really hard to keep purples and greens looking vibrant (and I wouldn’t want to keep dyeing and re-dyeing the roots)… and when they fade, they look absolutely awful and cheap.
That said, she seems very, very happy in the pap pics, and you can tell it’s refreshing for her to be able to re-claim her identity. The shoes even match… shine and all! She’s always adorable, and I can’t hate on this girl.

I think she needs to grow up. It’s not even that cute when teenagers or early 20-somethings dye their hair crazy colors. It’s incredibly desperate and ridiculous when someone in their 30s, especially someone who has children, dyes their hair purple, blue, and/or green.

Answer: Absolutely nothing. I never understood why people think that when you hit 30 and/or have kids you suddenly have to don khakis and a twinset and call it a day on having fun.
IMO, I find it more “desperate” to conform to beauty standards that you don’t feel reflect your personality. I don’t think that a person’s hair color impacts their ability to be a mother. It is just hair after all and it isn’t a permanent change.

She’s another old look 31-year-old. I was reminded of that because of Jeff Goldblum’s old looking 31-year-old fiancee. I know people in their early 30s who look 10 years younger than these women.

When Kelly Osbourne and Ireland Baldwin did it, I distinctly remember people trashing them. I guess it depends on who the owner of the brightly colored hair is. Anna Paquin is certainly more likeable, so people here seem to like her look. I think its a bit too much, but that’s just my opinion. Or it could just be jealousy that my job wont allow me to wear such cool colors in my hair 😉
I like the lilac color a lot on Nicole Ritchie because of her skin tone, not so much on the other two because I think it washed them out a bit. Ana’s works with her pale skin because it’s a deeper purple and she varied the purple with some blue so it’s not monotone.

Actors and celebrities are constantly gauging their marketability by how much attention they attract with their looks, so I stand by my comment which had nothing to do with committed relationships. Where I work, I’ve been seeing a lot of young women doing this color exploration with their hair. I’ve seen teal, green, purple, pink. Interesting.
I think the only people that rainbow colored hair looks right on is rainbow colored people. With white skin is just looks overwhelming and wrong.
That said, if people want to have fun with it, more power to them. If you can’t have some purple hair when you are young, then when can you? Go for it girls.
