As I previewed yesterday, Kanye West covers the new issue of GQ Mag. I was wrong, though. I thought GQ would release quotes from the interview in drips and drabs throughout the week, milking Kanye’s elegantly branded insanity. Nope! They released the whole interview all at once. You can read it here. There are WAY too many interesting quotes to summarize, so I really would suggest you read the whole thing. Kanye addresses the stories about his gold toilet tower at his wedding, his 40-minute toast to himself, how he is like Steve Jobs and some convoluted thoughts about Carine Roitfeld. Some highlights:
The efforts to “de-fang” him: “But also, there’s no fangs. I don’t have fangs. I’m a porcupine. I’m a blowfish. Like, I’m a—what’s the fish that blows up? Yeah. I’m a blowfish. I’m not a shark, I’m a blowfish.”
The gold toilet tower rumors: “For the person that wrote that, were they involved with anything last year that was as culturally significant as the Yeezus tour or that album? They didn’t even talk there about the photographs, or the dress, or Andrea Bocelli singing, or the marble tables. They’re like: “It’s a gold toilet.” No.”
His wedding toast: “What I talked about in it was the idea of celebrity, and celebrities being treated like blacks were in the ’60s, having no rights, and the fact that people can slander your name. I said that in the toast. And I had to say this in a position where I, from the art world, am marrying Kim. And how we’re going to fight to raise the respect level for celebrities so that my daughter can live a more normal life. She didn’t choose to be a celebrity. But she is. So I’m going to fight to make sure she has a better life.”
Carine Roitfeld: “Carine Roitfeld is the Walt Disney of what Tumblr is today. She is the Kanye West of what Tumblr is today. She’s the single most important person to what street style is today. And she was at the wedding seven seats down from Kim, who is one of the number one fashion plates of today.”
How Beyonce & Jay-Z didn’t come to the wedding: “All that, I wouldn’t even speak on. It doesn’t even matter to me whatsoever, who would show up. Because the most important person to show up there, to me, was Kim. And that’s all that matters to me. I had to fight for that for seven years.”
That was pretty much as far as I got before my eyes glazed over with all of the Yeezus-ness and glory. It’s actually a decent piece and you can tell that the GQ interviewer respects Kanye and wants to hear him out and help him make whatever point he’s trying to make. It’s just that Kanye is just… exhausting. I don’t know how else to say it. He’s self-absorbed, he’s an egotist, and he could talk for days (about himself). He’s exhausting.

I thought about this because my neighbors are an elderly black couple. Is he serious? First of all the comparison is reprehensible. He’s from the art world? Really? Another world for sure, he’s waaaaay out there, but please. And if he’s so worried about raising the respect level for celebrities then maybe he should have married a woman who didn’t degrade herself in a sex tape as a stepping stone to fame and fortune. Have celebrities ever had to sit at the back of a bus? In the 60s, I had a beautiful cousin who lived in South Carolina. She was tall, slim, and brunette and had an incredibly dark tan. She was perceived to be Black and was sent to the back of the bus. Even back then, as a young teenager, I was appalled by the degradation of one race considering itself superior to another race.

The two of then are giggle-worthy at this point. They are so harmless. When I was a kid there was this 80 year old Italian woman who rode the city bus everyday in these outrageously elaborate red and black lace outfits. Fully accessories and always a hat of epic proportions. I looked forward to seeing what ensemble she’d wear next and I also felt a bit of sadness for her. And Kim and Kanye are like that crazy bus lady for me. A little entertaining, a little sad.

I like when people in the NYC and L.A. talk about their crossings with celebrities here. I lived in NYC and met entertainers. I have also met people that work with them or work for entertainment magazines. Most of the time it is not cookies and cream. They do have that look at me …don’t look at me thing going on. They want the attention when they want it and want to control it. They get angry when they can’t control it. I am a huge Kanye fan and think he is intelligent.
In general I think listening to him talk about the fashion industry is an intelligent thing to do, if you have any interest in running your own business, business of any kind. The reason is so you can be cautious of what business adventures to go into. What I was taught by my MUM is to focus on necessity. Everyone needs a place to live, food, and transportation. Kanye said he wants to build cities. A city has employment,housing, and etc. If he focused on getting money from that first, then he would be able to fund his fashion line. There are a few, but a fashion line is not going to be huge when some celebrity is throwing themselves at you. Only a fan of a celebrity wants to think about that celebrity when they are wearing that celebs clothes. I do think he should shut up and focus on necessity, then stuff like a fashion line, and stop trying to fight the ‘haters.’ These celebrities like to use metaphors that will get people’s attention. Put stuff like that in your music/work. Fight to make laws that will protect your privacy. He knows commiting to Kim Kardashian was a mistake. He married someone that would be at his beckon call and wouldn’t drown out his bank account, cause she has some money. He married her cause he has control of the relationship. Some people fight their demons in private and others in public. Kanye is the latter. He will divorce her and get with someone that challenges him, like Clooney did. The reason is he is a smart and creative guy, It won’t happen till he gets centered. Probably late 40’s early 50’s. If people think he is exhausting and etc, then ignore him.

Interesting videos. Though the Kardashians are very calculated…they wanted us to see these videos…nothing is ever really “leaked”. North could care less about that photoshoot or where her “daddy” is. Oh, Kanye. I actually do remember the 60s and celebrities aren’t being treated like American blacks back then. Really. Buy yourself a golden boxed set of the documentary series Eyes on the Prize to start catching up. Then read a few books, say by Martin Luther King, Jr. as a beginning. Loads more reading material for you over the past few decades that you must have missed. Such as the very detailed books by Manning Marable, who was born about the same time I was (we even met once) but died way too young a few years ago. But his work will lead you to others, since as a careful historian he cites every possible source (he was really wonderful that way, quite a loss when he died). Someone in his family (I think his brother-in-law) was lynched for being black, by the way. Not for being a celebrity.
I don’t think Kanye is just another celebrity narcissist, though. He wasn’t always like this. I think he suffered brain damage in the car crash and it’s just getting worse as he ages. His mom apparently helped hold him together, but she died too soon. Kanye is by nature an intelligent and creative person, but the brain injuries are getting in the way. Pursuing Kim is just another symptom of his disorders. He’s sounding more and more manic as time goes on, I don’t think it’s an act. That poor baby girl. I think when his mother died he snapped. This happens all the time. I know 18 year old kids locked up after a parent died because they went crazy. Schizophrenia, Depression, Bipolar disorder can all be triggered late in life.
