Chelsea Clinton welcomes daughter Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky

I swear, I really thought Chelsea Clinton still had a few more weeks. I thought Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s baby would be the one to hijack George Clooney’s wedding (there’s still time, Baby Kutcher-Kunis!). But Chelsea gave birth yesterday. Chelsea and her husband Marc Mezvinsky welcomed daughter Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky. Aw. I love the name Charlotte.

Her mom might be eyeing the White House, but Chelsea Clinton‘s world just became all about the nursery! The former First Daughter and global activist, 34, and husband Marc Mezvinsky welcomed their first child, a daughter, on Friday, Sept. 26, she announced via Twitter.

“Marc and I are full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky,” Clinton writes.

Months after announcing that she and Mezvinsky hoped to make 2014 the “Year of the Baby,” Chelsea, 34, confirmed in April that the couple were expecting.

“I certainly feel all the better whether it’s a girl or a boy that she or he will grow up in world filled with so many strong female leaders,” she said, making the announcement at a Clinton Foundation event promoting the empowerment of girls and young women.

It was the news the mom-to-be’s parents, Bill and Hillary Clinton, had long awaited and the former Secretary of State told PEOPLE in June that she was already preparing for the big arrival, stockpiling children’s books and planning to have a carseat in her own car.

“I want to babysit any chance I get!” Secretary Clinton said. And she joked at a political gathering in September, “Bill and I are on constant grandchild watch.”

With her parents on standby, Chelsea, who stepped down as a special correspondent for NBC News, kept a busy pace at the Clinton Global Initiative just days before Charlotte’s arrival — so busy and so pregnant that President Obama joked in his CGI speech, “If Chelsea begins delivery while I’m speaking, she has my motorcade and will be able to navigate traffic.”

As for the new center of Chelsea’s and Mezvinsky’s world, Charlotte will be tucking into a nursery decorated in keeping with Mom’s passion for elephant conservation.

“We’re very baby-oriented right now, so we’ll definitely be buying a felt elephant or two. I think those will look great in our nursery,” she told Refinery29 of her new gift line benefiting groups that combat elephant poaching.

I love that she had a girl! We are now living in a world where Hillary and Bill Clinton are grandparents. I’m sure Bubba and Hillary are over the moon at their grandbaby – they’ve both been publicly pushing Chelsea to get on the baby train for years now. I’m also a little surprised with the name Charlotte. Chelsea was famously very close to both of her grandmothers, Virginia Clinton Kellyy and Dorothy Howell Rodham and I’m a little bit surprised that Chelsea didn’t reference one or both grandmothers in the baby’s name. Maybe she’s saving it for the next baby! Anyway, congrats to Chelsea, Marc, Hillary and Bubba.

Tee, hee, Kaiser–there’s a bit of a typo in your report (“But Chelsea gave bitch yesterday”).

    🙂

  2. notasugarhere says:

    Congratulations all around!

p.s. Kaiser, did you mean to type “But Chelsea gave BIRTH yesterday”?

  3. Laura says:

Awesome! Congrats to the happy family!! 🙂

  4. Brittney B says:

The third sentence… Freudian slip after typing Mila and Ashton’s names?

  5. Kaiser says:

I’m sorry, it was an honest-to-God typo!! My bad. I’m actually really happy for Chelsea, damn it.

  6. jane16 says:

Aww, thats lovely! Congratulations to Chelsea & Mark, and the happy grandparents too!

  7. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

It would be lovely if it was the Year of the baby All Over the World – no matter where and to whom the baby is born! African babies and Palestinian babies and First Nations babies – all deserve a life free of war and to be brought up with family and food.

    • Brittney B says:

That’s an amazing way to put it… and I’m glad people like Chelsea are using their resources and connections to try to make that a reality someday.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

  9. mia girl says:

    Congrats to Chelsea and Marc!

  10. T.C. says:

Congratulations to Chelsea. So happy for her, Bill and Hillary :). Many of us grew up with her.

I don’t think the interest in Ashton and Kunis’ baby is even half as much as Clooney’s finally getting married. Chelsea’s child and Clooney’s wedding will make big international headlines in respected news media. Ashton-Kunis will be relegated to tabloids.

  11. Stef Leppard says:

Congrats! But zzzzzzz to the name.

  12. nicegirl says:

  13. JudyK says:

I want a pic of Charlotte!

Wonderful news. Is it just me or does it seem kind of odd that the author seems amazed that she’d keep a car seat “in her own car”? Why wouldn’t she?

    • Lulu says:

I’m not sure if you think it meant Chelsea was having a car seat in her car but they meant Hillary, and I don’t think it’s particularly common for a grandparent to have their own car seat as most just borrow the parent’s one if they need to.

Actually, I think it is a good choice to give the baby a brand new name, not in someone’s honor. If I ever have a baby I am decided to do the same. I think the baby will carry something from the person whose name she/ him holds, not to mention all the people around the baby will remember the deceased when hearing the name – which is nice, but a baby needs a clean slate.
I carry the name of my paternal grandmother that I never knew – my dad insisted and everyone in his family hints that I resemble her a lot. Also, I function like a maternal figure for the entire family which is not bad and there was no pushing into it, but still, it seems the name comes with a legacy no matter the good intentions.

    • Jayna says:

My brother is the III. My father was Jr. My dad loved being a Jr. My brother loves being named after my father and grandfather and carries the name with pride, especially since he was close to my father when he was alive. He almost named his son the IV, but named him his middle name instead. It all depends on the person really. I’m more like you, but some love family names.

    • ol cranky says:

I believe her husband is Jewish and it is a Jewish tradition to honor someone loved and respected (the Mesvinsky’s are Ashkenazi so it would be to honor someone who is dead) so it’s quite possible they honored someone in her husband’s family. Naming a child in honor of someone doesn’t necessarily mean giving the child the same exact name; many Jewish families use initials (I’m a girl named after a great-grandfather, so my mom used the initial instead of his actual name). It’s also possible that the honor naming will just be done with a Hebrew name if they have a bris or baby-naming ceremony

  16. LAK says:

    I love the name Charlotte.

    • Chris2 says:

I too….and it has great nickname-opportunities like Charlie and Lottie.
      Or ‘Russe’ 😉

      • HappyMom says:

I’m not a nickname fan. Love Charlotte on its own.

      • Sea Dragon says:

And if the girl turns out to be a devil woman they can refer to the damage she’s done as Charlotte’s Web. I’m kidding but even if that little girl turns out to be wonderful, some will always be critical so just watch, it will happen.

I like the name as well. It’s sweet and that baby is a very lucky one. She’ll have the best of everything in life and she’ll know she’s loved. Chelsea is an intelligent women and I can see her making sure that her daughter/kids are instilled with an educational ethic and are taught to appreciate all the things that come with great power, prestige and money.

  17. Anne tommy says:

Congrats to all. She was treated terribly by the media when she was just a young girl, awful stuff about how plain she was, she has overcome that nonsense and good luck to them.

  18. Jayna says:

Aw, I’m so happy for them. Charlotte is such a beautiful name. Charlotte is going to have Bill Clinton wrapped around her little finger. Hillary has wanted a grandchild for so long. I hope Bill and Hillary stay healthy for many years to come so they can enjoy their little granddaughter.

  19. DavidBowie says:

  23. Charlotte says:

I was always the only Charlotte I knew growing up. Could never get cups or door plaques or souvenirs with my name on them, because it just wasn’t popular enough at all. Now there are Charlottes everywhere.

  24. OhDear says:

    Congrats to them!

  25. delorb says:
