Suki Waterhouse: ‘Actors take all the modeling jobs & magazine covers’

Suki Waterhouse

I wanted to write about Suki Waterhouse because she changed her hair color this weekend. She went from a dusty blonde to a deep brown. Her hairstylist spoke to the Mail about the double process that took her to “French brown.” That’s what the shade is called. The double process avoided a green-haired Suki. Have you heard of that problem? Sometimes if you cover blonde with brown (especially an ash tone), hair can turn green. (It happened to me in high school. The horror.) These are photos of Suki with Cara Delevigne outside of Jessie J’s concert.

Outside of Suki’s active nightlife, she’s still Bradley Cooper’s best girl and potential baby mama. I feel bad even writing “baby mama,” but that’s the vibe BCoop was putting out in his latest interview. Suki is focused on her career. She’s a budding actress and is promoting her role as “the other girl” in Love, Rosie.” Suki talked to the Guardian about the perks of dating BCoop. He’s taken her to the Oscars, Met Gala, and White House State Dinner:

Her favorite Oscars moment: “The pizza and [host] Ellen DeGeneres. I was cracking up the whole time; my cheeks actually hurt. I didn’t expect the Oscars to be that fun.”

The transition from model to actress: “I am still making the move, but I think it’s kind of natural. The way I see it, actors are taking all the modelling jobs; they are on all the magazines covers, get the best contracts and walk in the shows. I’ve acted my whole life pretty much, but then just got more into modelling. I was scared of picking it up again, because it’s such a difficult, soul-baring thing to do compared with modelling, where you just close yourself off. But it’s made me really happy. Being on set reminds me of being at summer camp.”

Have you had an ‘Oh my God, I’ve made it’ moment?
No, and I think it’s a misconception that anyone ever feels like that. Even when I’m doing well, I still have moments when I think, ‘Ugh.’ When I feel like that, I do the thing I heard Albert Einstein did: say thank you 100 times.

Her most glamorous moment: “The Met Ball was more glamorous than the Oscars. It’s quite scary, because it’s a last-minute thing, and everyone’s dresses get made for them, so you get what you’re given. But it turned out to be my favourite dress ever. It was by Burberry. I didn’t get to keep it, but it was so large, it took up half the hotel room. When I called the bellboy to take it downstairs, he refused.”

Her least glamorous moment: “Whenever I am left to my own devices with cleaning and washing. When I was filming in Atlanta this summer, my apartment was disgusting. I learned to use the washing machine, but I don’t see the point in using detergent. I stored things in my dishwasher.”

Her White House visit: “I didn’t expect to see Obama bopping to Mary J Blige. He can really dance. I got a tour of the Oval Office, which was pretty cool, especially because I love the TV show Scandal.”

Her iTunes collection: “I have a lot of Britney. We actually wanted to see her in Las Vegas, but she wasn’t playing, so we ended up seeing Celine Dion, which was a bit of a disappointment.”

Her biggest fashion faux-pas: “I am constantly faux pas-ing. I messed up at fashion week last year. I had five minutes to come home to change, and my mum was screaming at me that the taxi was waiting outside, so I just threw on the most hideous thing. I looked like I was wearing a jacket made of p-bes — and there was photographic evidence. My problem is that what I like changes from week to week. Even the stuff in my suitcase right now I don’t like any more.”

What makes her angry: “Preconceived judgments. I think we’re all guilty of it. I judge other people even though I get judged myself. It’s such a disease and gets spread so much through social media.”

What makes her laugh: “People falling off treadmills. I YouTube that all the time.”

[From The Guardian]

I need to know who the “we” is when Suki talks about wanting to see Britney in Vegas. Is she talking about Bradley Cooper? Please tell me it’s true. I want to see BCoop shimmying to “Slave 4 U.”

Suki seems disgruntled at how actors have replaced models on the covers of major fashion magazines. She can blame the disappearing supermodel. In the 1990s, models could move newsstand copy and shill for brands. Most models don’t hold that power nowadays, so mags rely on actresses to do so. Suki’s doing alright for herself without major covers. She’s the new face of Burberry. Plus, there’s the whole acting thing. Suki is 22 and a bit immature, but she’ll be fine.

    Then get a real job.

  2. Ag says:

my hair is “french brown.” now i know.

    • Jackson says:

Mine too, lol. I’m going to write that in on my next driver’s license.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Ha! Mine, too. And also apparently Ellen Page, because that’s who Suki could pass for now.

    • InvaderTak says:

I laughed out loud at that. French Brown is also a flooring company in Dallas so it didn’t sound so fabulous to me.

  3. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

The last of the Supermodels were seen in the late eighties.

    • BendyWindy says:

I don’t know. I think Gisele comes close, and although Heidi Klum isn’t a runway model, she’s got the name recognition and big contracts and money.

      • Diana says:

I don’t know. I would definitely consider Naomi Campbell, the last working “supermodel.” I don’t consider Gisele a “supermodel.”

      • Truthtful says:

Gisele also Daria Werbowy or even Cara delevingne (even if she is not well liked) are the closest thing to 90’s supermodels: they have their pick of work from high street to high end fashion and they are the ones who choose so they can be picky if they want to and in the case of Gisele or daria they don’t even bother to walk the catwalk since between the two of them they share 50% of all high end campaigns for almost a decade now.

Heidi Klum isn’t even considered a model outside the US and germany, she is known for being in celebrity news not really what a supermodel is supposed to be…

      • Eleonor says:

I agree Naomi is the last working supermodel.
Gisele is the one who has the highest cachet, but she’s not a supermodel.
Between ’80s and ’90s supermodels were like rockstars, Gisele is not like that.
And I think they were more beautiful than the models we have now. Check the George Micheal “Freedom” or “Too Funky” videos.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I would definitely say Gisele is a supermodel, because she is a brand to herself.

The “Supermodel” era ended because designers didn’t want the models over shadowing their work. They have been preferring blank clothing hangers in recent years.

      • homegrrl says:

I’m actually happy to see the end of supermodels. That was an unhealthy aesthetic, while acting is more complex and intellectual. Ok so there I go dumbing down the modeling industry, but isn’t it time we saw an era come to close? And I prefer to see fashion on -slightly- more realistic bodies. The whole coat hanger model thing is cultural propaganda, and I for one, cannot determine styling when displayed on an anorexic heroin addict type of human. I realize hollywood actresses are usually nervously thin for the most part, but at least they aren’t all vacant looking and cookie cutter tall and emaciated. My goal is to end the fashion system with it’s epidemic of eating disorders, objectification and slave produced garments; this industry will hopefully see it’s place in the history of a dark time.

      • Crazy Reader says:

Gisele IS a supermodel. Naomi said she is the last of the supermodels.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

1990’s…was the last of the Supermodels…even though it emerged in the 80’s it went into the1990’s , until Versace died tragically.
Cindy, Claudia,Naomi,Linda Evangelista were considered 1990’s Supermodels. IMO

But Suki is right. The modeling jobs go to celebs.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      1980’s to the 1990’s.

  4. Rachel says:

Well she is right. I am a bit tired of actresses being on all the covers of Vogue.

    • epiphany says:

That’s the only thing she said here with which I agree. Models may not belong to the Brain Trust, but a real model has a relationship with the camera that conveys an emotion in a single look – actresses, and especially singers, just can’t do that.
The rest of the article sounds like a 12 year old was being interviewed. No detergent in her laundry? Good grief. You sure can pick ’em, Brad!

      • Betty says:

Exactly, the no detergent thing is so gross. How hard is it to add detergent? When she said that I was wondering what on earth a man pushing 40 would see in her, besides the obvious. If you can’t bother to learn how to do laundry, you’re not really an adult. I don’t care how rich and privileged you are. Look it up on YouTube. Call a family member to guide you. The fact is, even children can do laundry.

      • Veronica says:

It’s actually not as bad as it sounds. I’ve known people who can’t use it because of serious allergies to the fragrance components.

Generally, the only thing soap does is make cleaning debris off a surface much easier because the polar nature of the molecule allows it to enclose the object and make it soluble. It does not kill microorganisms, and in fact does little more than move bacteria around on your skin or inanimate surfaces. The twisting motion of the machine cycle probably does as much to remove body odor from the object as detergent would.

      • Melanie says:

What about using fragrance free detergent?

      • Tiffany :) says:

” real model has a relationship with the camera that conveys an emotion in a single look – actresses, and especially singers, just can’t do that.”

I think that is exactly what an actress does regularly, though, conveying emotion with a single look. I was more shocked at her talking about modeling as shutting everything off. Those sound like some really blank and vacant photos!

    • Leah says:

This goes both ways there are plenty of models who think they can act. Like sukis best friend Cara who gets acting jobs because she is a model. And as far as i know suki herself is trying to be an actor and i am not aware she actually has dedicated any time to learning the craft of acting in any serious way. So i can’t take her seriously.
Real actors dedicate years to study their craft, there is more too it than being photogenic or having “a relationship with the camera”.
Either way suki gets model jobs and probably soon acting jobs because she is well connected, i doubt she would get these jobs if she wasn’t from a well connected family and dating copper. So she should stop whining and count her blessings.

      • amanda says:

Bless you! She’s whining about actors taking over modeling jobs. Why is she trying to be an actress then? I know why, she’s no model material, not even for today’s standard.

    • jane16 says:

Me too. Models were more glamorous than actresses.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Suki is right.
The modeling industry no longer puts models on the covers.
I had a roommate in NYC who was a model early 90’s and she was booked for modeling jobs or on go-sees almost every day. It was the Supermodel era of Cindy, Naomi, Claudia, etc those girls were in such demand that the agencies needed more lesser known faces to fill the work coming their way. Advertisers, magazines and fashion industry couldn’t get enough of models, so the work trickled down from the top models to the second and third tiered girls on the books. My former roommate told me one day that she got jobs because the top Supermodels were too busy or the next tiered model above her were busy. She loved it. I remember seeing her in ads, but she wasn’t famous, but she worked all the time. She made so much money that she eventually bought an apartment somewhere in NY, maybe. Brooklyn, I lost track after she moved and she said she had enough to easily finish paying for her University tuition. There was a ton of work for models in the early 1990’s , almost everyone wanted to use model for their products or in ads. Now it’s all celebrities and movie stars….but
…..I also think it has to do with the fact that there isn’t the creative excitement around the current models that,Cindy, Naomi, Claudia, Linda etc, created. They came at a time when people like Kevin Auccoin, Bobby Brown, Versace were building themselves in the industry and new young, creative photographers were forming alliances with Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, etc and those magazines were willing to try a lot of new things and present new faces. The magazines took more risk back then and the magazines were better. IMO
I also think the Models were more exciting and truly beautiful in a way that made them relatable , but also almost magical.
I loved that SuperModel late 80’s 1990’s era

  5. Lex says:

She doesn’t see the ‘point’ in detergent? She doesn’t understand that soap cleans things. ..? Am I missing something here?

    • joy says:

Glad I’m not the only one focusing on that part. Gag.

    • nicegirl says:

Yep, I was wondering about that, too.

    • hutter says:

She comes from a privileged background, doesn’t she? She probably didn’t grow up doing dishes. I was on holiday with a bunch of people at 18. We had rented some bungalows and did our own cooking. One of the guys with us was quite nouveau-riche and totally out of his depth when we told him to do the cleaning up. In his case though, he used waaaay too MUCH detergent. It was kinda funny. But shocking as well.

      • AG-UK says:

Her dad is a plastic surgeon but please she is annoying and that face / look she always seems to have. Actors on covers of magazines and models attempting to act. ummm. I had an au pair who must have THOUGHT she was privileged, can I wash my clothes in the washing machine, yes there it is turn the button, but my underwear is VERY expensive yeah so put it on delicate, that’s not privileged that’s just plan on stupid if you ask me.

    • Longhorn says:

Yep, she’s ready for a baby. BCoop must be so proud

  6. Kiddo says:

I thought she was Charlie Sheen’s second wife (Bret /Sp?) in the twin bird photo.

  7. mia girl says:

“I got a tour of the Oval Office, which was pretty cool, especially because I love the TV show Scandal.”

    Wow. Seriously?

It’s kind of like saying “I took a trip around Europe, which was pretty cool, especially because I love Epcot”

    • Kiddo says:

      Hee-hee.

    • Jaderu says:

This. Some of the most important moments in American history took place there but whatever…TV show.

    • Mesia says:

Well since she’s not American maybe the oval
      Office carries less significance.

      • mia girl says:

Sure. But on the other hand, I’m not from England, and when I visited the House of Commons, I was appreciative given its historical and modern day significance. It was not because I really loved Will Farrell’s SNL skit – “But is not Oasis the greatest British band since the Beatles? Can we vote on this?!!”

      • Leftovers says:

I would be more inclined to think so too. As a fellow European, for me there is no significance attached to the OO other than it being the office of the POTUS.

      • Dany says:

for us europeans american history isn´t that important. We as you guys learn mainly the history of our own country and europe in school. The rest comes from hollywood movies 😉
So the office of the US President is just the office of the US President for most. There is no connection if you haven´t real interest in american history and study for yourself.
I think Suki like most young people is more interested in the modern scandals than actual history.

      • mia girl says:

I hear what you are all saying. Clearly the Oval Office will not hold the significance for Europeans that it does for Americans. But I am surprised at the “no significance” “no connection” comments, when there have been some major developments in the Oval Office that have had an impact on European history. I mean, FDR signed the declaration of war against Nazi Germany and Japan in that office.

Oh well, I still think she’s pretty draft for being the guest of a major world leader, invited into his office and her only take was excitement at seeing the real life version of something she sees on a fictional TV soap opera.
I’m sorry, interest in US history or not, young or not, that is just plain stupid.

      • Lucy2 says:

I’m in agreement with mia girl. I’ve been fortunate to travel a lot and go to a lot of places I didn’t learn about in school, or that don’t have any personal meaning for me, but was still able to appreciate the significance and the history of them. Relating it only to the set of a TV show makes her sound pretty airheaded, but I can’t say I’m all that surprised.

    • Tanguerita says:

Haha. Gosh, she sounds so unapologetically dumb.

      • Sarah says:

Kinda speaks volumes about Bradley Cooper’s ability to pick ’em. If she’s that upset that people in her boyfriend’s profession terk err jerbs, then maybe she should start conning him into having her in a few of his flicks. Either that or just pester her daddy about getting her onscreen.

  8. TheOriginalKitten says:

    *side-eyes Bradley Cooper*

  9. aenflex says:

Nothing about her face says ‘model’ to me.

  10. Allie says:

I think the “we” meant her and Cara and their friends. I follow Cara on Instagram and they had a girls trip to Vegas a few months ago that I was quite jealous of. They might be immature, but I’d love to party with them, just once. I’m too old for anything more than that

  11. Loopy says:

Wow sometimes its good to be a mystery, i would never have guessed she was so immature, probably more than J.Law.

  12. Adrien says:

Kendall Jenner, I take back what I said about you not being model material. Suki is your strongest argument for your case.

  13. MrsB says:

“I got a tour of the Oval Office, which was pretty cool, especially because I love the TV show Scandal.”

So it’s not cool to be in the Oval Office because it’s iconic and historic, and where the President and world leaders meet, but because she watches Scandal. She sounds intelligent, and not vapid at all.

  14. Aussie girl says:

Ok your 22 and just Learnt to use a washing machine..?! Wow! And I just do not, not one bit at all buy her and Bcoop together. They seem worlds apart. It has to be an contracted arrangement. He helps her career out and she is his arm candy.

    • Rachel says:

She’s probably a spoiled rich girl who has a rich famous boyfriend. She wouldn’t need to learn to use the washing machine.

    • Melanie says:

I think he actually likes her. They’ve been dating too long for this to be a contracted relationship.

      • Leah says:

If she is not a beard it makes me side eye him even more, he is pushing 40 and dating a immature 22 year old airhead. At least if she was intelligent or mature you’d see how it could work. I mean this is the guy who acted like he was much of a grown up for JLaw and then he goes on to date this person who sounds way more immature.

    • sigh((s)) says:

Right? My six year old knows how to use the washing machine. With detergent and everything.

  15. Franny Days says:

Oh no. We are the same exact age and we seem years apart. Also, I have the opposite problem as her, I use way too much detergent.

    • G. says:

I’m almost 21 and I’ve been doing laundry for 10 years. What the hell. My family is decently well off too, so she shouldn’t be able to use that as an excuse. This girl needs to get herself an education.

  16. Yellowshaba says:

I dont get anything about her.. Nothing is striking, nothing stands out. Normally i like a good plain Jane actress but i dont with her. I absolutely do not get her fame or how she got it other than dating Bcoop. So i guess i dont get a lot lol

    • FingerBinger says:

I get what you’re saying. She’s cute ,but there’s nothing extraordinary about her that would make you look twice.

    • Gina says:

@AG-UK They met at the Elle Style awards last year. Bradley received Male Style of the Year or something. As for her being a ridiculously good dancer, there are Instagram videos of her and Cara at the Jessie J show that prove otherwise. LOL

  17. bns says:

Did she happen because of Bradley Cooper? I’d never heard of her until she started dating him and now she’s everywhere.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      It’s true

    • DJ says:

I think most people believe that’s why she is where she is. I had never heard of her either until she started dating him.

    • Bridget says:

The Cooper exposure helps, but a lot of the push is because she’s one of Harvey’s ‘girls’. She’s a society girl turned model turned actress.

      • bns says:

That makes more sense. I know Bradley is having a career moment right now, but I didn’t think he had that much pull.

      • Melanie says:

Some people think Harvey is forcing Bradley to date her.

      • bns says:

        @Melanie

As a beard for him or to benefit her career? Or both?

      • Rachel says:

That theory makes little sense. How is she Harvey’s girl? She is in none of his films and does no modeling for his wife’s fashion line.

All of his girls were in movies he produced. She’s not.

      • Bridget says:

Because Harvey Weinstein isn’t at all known for mentoring young actresses. For what its worth, W aterhouse apparently met Cooper *through* Harvey.

      • Rachel says:

Mentoring the actresses he has an interest in, i.e those in his films. She has no connection to him. This theory was thought up by fans of BC who don’t like him dating her. It’s not fact based.

      • Melanie says:

@bns: I believe the thought is that dating Cooper will benefit her career, e.g he introduces her to people in the business, she gets recognition from being seen with him, etc. Obviously no one knows if it’s true. All I know is that he went public with her fairly quickly, and has been so public with her, which I didn’t think was his style. Something definitely seems weird, but it could be nothing.

      • Gina says:

@Rachel – Suki was in the remake of Pusher which was produced by Harvey Weinstein. There is supposedly a friendship between her mother and Georgina Chapman years past. Harvey is more than likely the person that introduced them at the Style Awards. I don’t believe there is an arrangement, but there was definitely a connection prior to Bradley.

      • Ag-UK says:

I live in London and never heard of her before him. Thought they met at GQ party they have every year and they went to a club and they both are ridiculously good dancers she says!

      • bns says:

        @Melanie

Yeah I agree that something isn’t right. I remember him saying that he would never date JLaw because he’s old enough to be her father, and then a few weeks later he was dating this girl and she’s younger than JLaw.

  18. Candy says:

She’s a female version of Justin Biebier. They seem twins

  19. don't kill me i'm french says:

Apparently Cooper is not in love because of her clever mind

  20. Bridget says:

And this is why hiring the daughters of well connected, fancy friends isn’t the greatest idea.

  21. Crocuta says:

TBH I’ve never heard of her but from the article I get she’s a model turned actress? How can she complain about actresses taking the modelling jobs if she’s a model taking an actor’s job?

    • Mesia says:

I don’t think she’s complaining. She just stating a fact. I think she trying to show why the move to acting is natural.

      • Tanguerita says:

really? I’ve always thought that having an actual talent should be a reason for starting acting, not the fact that a person sucks in his/her other job.

  22. JenniferJustice says:

Boo hoo. Perhaps you’re just not really cut out for modeling ’cause I’m not seeing anything special or even particularly attractive. I’m having a hard time feeling sympathy for some whiner who doesn’t want to admit she can’t compete in the modelling world because that would mean getting a real job and actually working.

  23. Jess says:

This woman is not…I mean everybody is attractive to somebody and some people are attractive to everyone/a lot of people, but Suki isn’t attractive. Also there’s no resemblance to Ellen Page. Ellen, beneath layers of boyish style, is a beauty. Suki’s features, not so much. She’s not even striking in her debatable features like Giselle or Cara. I don’t understand why she’s a thing.

  24. Julie says:

Bradley Cooper has a BO problem because he refuses to wear deodorant. He says that he showers multiple times a day to combat this. Now I see why these two are still together. As for her magazine cover comment, the mags will go with whoever sells more. The fact is, no one cares about models anymore. Actresses are more relevant.

She was excited to tour the Oval Office because of a tv show? What an airhead. The most powerful man in the free world sits at that desk.

  25. Emily says:

Seriously??? She thinks actresses take away from models on magazine covers. Give me a break. I am sure that all the real models and real actresses are feeling indifferent to her. This is a girl who has only gotten jobs because of who she is sleeping with. Nobody really knew who this person was until she showed up on Bradley Coopers arm. She has no education and has obviously never had to work in her life. Her answers to these questions make her sound very selfish and immature. A very good fit for a Georgetown educated almost 40 year old man. The more I read about her the less respect I get for Bradley.

  26. Patty says:

The only thing that stood out for me was her referring to seeing Celine Dion in concert as disappointing. Whatevs!

  27. Lucy says:

she means by “we”, her brit pack, they went to Vegas to celebrate Georgia May Jagger, Cara was also there and a bunch of relatevely unknown friends

  28. Corrie says:

I actually don’t mind her responses but it definitely makes me question and side eye the hell out of Cooper. How immature he must be… better her problem than ours. lol

    • Chris says:

I don’t think he’s with her to connect on an intellectual or emotional level. Just a hunch.

  29. db says:

She doesn’t see the point of detergent? Actresses replacing models? Boo effing hoo! she sounds like a twit

  30. SillySimone says:

I’m confused, why did she get a tour of the White House and get to meet the President? Was this part of some outreach program for the vapid?

    • Meghan says:

It was the White House Correspondence Dinner that is held every year. The Dinner is a scholarship benefit for gifted students in college journalism programs. It was originally intended for journalists but, now Hollywood actors and celebrities are also invited. It also has a lot of criticism from esteemed journalists. For instance, Barbara Walters and Tom Brokaw refuse to attend. Suki was in attendance probably as a plus one with Bradley Cooper. He has been a guest before as has Gerard Butler, Kim Kardashian, Brad Paisley and even Lindsay Lohan has been invited before. The dinner itself is a touchy subject for many Americans because of the cost to put it on. Considering Bradley tries to act like he cares about social/political issues and veterans and has even spoke at a mental health conference in D.C., his date should at least try to speak somewhat educated when referring to the White House.

  31. SAKS says:

I dislike her a lot but if she’s a real fan of Britney she just gained points with me….

  32. Smil says:

    But Suki’s not a model. She’s a wannabe model.

  33. Chris says:

“The way I see it, actors are taking all the modelling jobs; they are on all the magazines covers, get the best contracts and walk in the shows.”

    First World problems.

  34. BadAssCompass says:

by the age of 22 she somehow managed to be in a sort of long term relationships with at least 2 British musicians, one of them being Luke Pritchard of the Kooks (remember he used to date Mischa Barton while she was a thing), who she then dumped for some other band-dude who proclaimed her to be the love of his life only for her to end up very soon with BC. Based on that history I really thought this girl was something else. Now, not so much.
