Here are some photos of Benedict Cumberbatch filming The Hollow Crown on October 9th. These photos were only released yesterday and I missed them completely! So enjoy. Our Cumberbatch in armor. With a bad wig. And a horse. I feel sorry for the horse, actually. I know there are horses that enjoy trotting around in armor and such, but… yeah, I feel sorry for the horse. The horse is wearing armor and carrying a heavy, armored man.
In other Cumbernews, The Imitation Game doesn’t come out in the UK and US until November, but Benedict is already doing some advanced promotional work on TV. He’s just been added to this week’s Graham Norton Show, which films on Friday, I guess. The other guests will be Miranda Hart, Timothy Spall and Maroon 5. Benedict and Graham Norton seem to get along very well, and whenever Benedict has a big project to promote, he usually does Norton’s show. I think this will be Benedict’s third time? And usually the Cumberbitches come out in full force!
Oh, and there have been sightings of Cumberbatch in Edinburgh. It’s something to do (maybe) with the secret girlfriend Sophie Hunter? I have no idea. But I’m kind of over the secret girlfriend speculation, you guys. I think Benedict is dating Sophie Hunter and they’re just being discreet about it. It’s not the end of the world and there’s no reason to stalk his every move because of it.

Not. Always not.
Reminds me of the tin man from the wizard of oz. I look at the pics – not necessarily these ones- to see if anything stirs but it doesn’t. He’s fine though, am not going to run him down.
Can I just say that I’d rather Spall got a surprise Oscar nod for Turner than Benny the Bouncer for TiG? No Harvey involved y’see.
Of course you would not want BC to get a nomination. Harvey is just an excuse for you darling 😉
Eh? How so? I like Benny’s acting. He just doesn’t make me swoon is all. And I’m certainly not swooning over Tim, bless him. Woman magnet he isn’t!
I really, really want Timothy Spall to get an Oscar nomination for Mr. turner. And Eddie for TTOE.. But idk if the Academy will want 3 English actors, and of the 3 (cumberbatch included) I think Spall would get knocked off the list. Phooey.
My thoughts precisely. But if I had a choice, I’d go with Spall. I love him. He’s also not posh and it would be nice if any British Oscar-hopeful contingent included someone who DIDN’T fit with the American obsession with British poshies. We do have non-posh actors!
@Sixer, have you seen Mr. Turner yet? I have no idea when it opens over here. Turner’s The Slave Ship hangs in a local museum and has fascinated me since childhood.
Not yet. But as soon as I can, I will. It’s being quite heavily promoted here and it really seems as though it’s been a labour of love for everyone concerned.
@Sixer – I’m afraid I don’t know who Timothy Spall is but I do wish the Oscars was less the popularity or PR contest it has become. It should be the one award in Hollywood that is entirely merit-based.
But given that a nominee’s success does depend on how well they campaign (sadly), I’m not sure the Academy was that impressed by how the last non-posh Brit nominee handled the process. Wasn’t Michael Fassbender nominated last year? Didn’t he publicly declare he felt no need to “campaign” and it was a waste of his time? Not exactly the kind of attitude that is awarded in a sycophantic field like show business. You can secretly think that to yourself, but God forbid you say it out loud.
Eddie Redmayne looks amazing as Hawking – posh or not – he killed it and deserves a nomination, in my opinion.
I don’t think Fassbender is a Brit. He’s Irish/German IIRC.
I’ve been eager to watch Mr. Turner ever since it came out of Cannes with good to great reviews. It’s also another Film4 project, so I am quite sure the par is very high. In addition, I totally get what Sixer is saying about Spall not being a woman magnet AND deserving an Oscar nod. It’s very easy to love actors who are very easy on the eyes 😉
@Dara … I think Fassy made that one response to a Q in GQ UK article which (imho) totally got blown out of proportion re: his “sour grapes” and “lack of willingness to campaign” (ergo dude is ungrateful spoilt – spoiled?- brat!). Like, still today, this site will make remarks on this matter, as if he’s harping about it ad nauseam…
@Sixer I am off to see an all female Henry IV part 1 & 2 set in a prison on Thursday which really excites me especially if it lives up to the review.
I just hope that Ben’s Hamlet has an innovative take and does not rely totally on his acting and popularity.
I think we should all campaign for Tim!
@icerose – Ooh. Report back! I’m off to see all three James plays on the same day next week. Birthday present from Mr Sixer and Mr Sixer Senior.
@Sixer and you do the same. I dithered over the James play but with a hotel it would have worked out too expensive,
I opted for John in the Lyttelton which is dance theatre or physical theatre depending on what angle you promote, I just saw Bourne’s Lord of the Flies which was not far off dance theatre and was incredible so it kind of fits in with my current impulse to see more physical theatre.
Will do! I saw Lord of the Flies when it came down here to the West Country. Fabulous, wasn’t it?!
Spall is long overdue for accolades.
I suspect Spall will get the BAFTA win and maybe a SAG nod but who knows if the AMPAS voters will even watch the film? He won’t score a Golden Globe nod because he isn’t pretty or well known enough to bring in viewers. Spall has certainly paid his dues. Sadly, it seems Oscars may be based on the number of magazine covers scored and Spall won’t get many of those.
Yes to Spall and Bafta’s but there is hope for the Hollow Crown yet.
Apparently Benedict as Richard 111 falls of his horse and calls out “”A cigarette, A cigarette my kingdom for a cigarette”” at which point Hal in full Boar’s Head mode saves the day by riding in with a roll up. Bafta is so impressed with the innovative take on Shakespeare gives both seasons of the Hollow Crown an honorary Bafta,
@Dara, Spall is a regular in Mike Leigh’s films, which Mr. Turner is. He has also become a semi-regular in Tim Burton films but he is probably best known in the US as Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter
Thanks @lilac – I looked him up after I commented. His photographer role in The Last Samurai caught my eye. He had maybe three scenes in that movie, so just the fact that I remember his performance makes him aces in my book.
Spall would be my wish as well. I have admired him ever since Auf Wiedersehen, Pet,He is a working actor who turns in some amazing work but lacks the looks which would have propelled him into main stream stardom. What I think may work against him and this comes from reviews, is that his Tuners is a warts and all approach including a lot of vocalisations which may pit a lot of American audiences off. In other words he burbs ,he snorts, he clears his throat and spits etc, Not your Hollywood leading man approach, Plus cannot see the voters sitting through an art film which is about a painter,
Oh, no. Not hot….
He looks fugly here
no thanks. Terrible armor. Poor horse.
I love him but…no
The Out shoot and interview that I just saw online, now THAT’S another question altogether.
Yep. And the interview made me howl as he described fan art.
I’m not into fan art or fanfic but I kind of side eyed some of his responses before reminding myself this is his experience with it and his likeness so… his right to say whatever about it. I just was kind of like “uh, yeah, a lot of those fan writers/artists aren’t teenaged girls afraid of rejection. They just think it’d be hot of those two characters went at it, and many are adult women *and* men.”
@MissMary: personally, this made me laugh out loud: “Nothing about Cumberbatch screams Hollywood heartthrob, and nothing about Sherlock corresponds to a typical ladies’ man”. I mean, really?? Where does the author of the article live, exactly? Hopefully, not under a real rock. Sherlock is a typical XXI century thinking, educated ladies’ man, the epitome of it. And then this from Ben: “He’s a machine and brutal and ruthless and has no time for the distractions of your fawning.” But that’s EXACTLY what so many ladies love about Sherlock. I am pretty sure that Moffat and Gatiss understand that and both cater to those ladies AND mock them. Doesn’t Cumberbatch realise it?
What always strikes me is how Martin Freeman is like oh yeah they are totally in love (or he was in S1 and S2) interviews and takes the whole slash fic thing in stride, but BC is very “NOPE NOPE NOPE JUST FRIENDS THANKS” whenever it comes up–makes me wonder what kind of conversations they have about their characters on set! And I’m sure BC must, to some degree, realize WHY sherlock is so appealing to fans, but maybe it’s just reading wrong in interviews? Or he’s in denial, lol?
I have wondered about it, too. I mean, Ben surely seems to be quite a defender of gay rights, his passion for Turing’s life story seems genuine and deeply felt. Why is he then so unwilling to acknowledge any gay feelings Mofftiss’ Sherlock might be feeling towards Watson? I mean, even in the film itself characters like Irene hinted at this possibility. Maybe Ben is aware of the Watson/Sherlock fanfiction and is reluctant to acknowledge it in order not to encourage the fanfiction writers? But then again.. Why would he really care? It’s not like Sherlock and Watson are minors (like Harry Potter et al were when Rowling voiced her dislike of HP-based slash fanfiction, for example).
@ Intro Outro
Easy, because it is not canon. Not everyone is comfortable with slash involving characters of their creation or they helped to create. It’s just a matter of fact.
Although, did Rowling really voice her dislike? I had no idea.
@IntroOutro: There are a LOT of academic papers written about queer subtext in ACD’s original stories so canon might be flexible in that case (but as always, it depends on how the originals are read–you can see the subtext or you don’t see it–it’s not right or wrong, esp given ACD’s very lax approach to the stories since he hated Holmes so much after a while). It personally just rankles me how BC seems to go “Oh LGBTQIA rights” but gets snarfy about people thinking Holmes and Watson are a couple (and the Beeb’s iteration of the duo isn’t the first to be ‘shipped’ together so it’s not just them…). I’m sure he’s not being homophobic and I’m also sure a lot of his reaction is down to how he feels personally being the “face” of some of these fantasies (I know I’d be uncomfortable if I found out thousands of people were writing erotica about someone who looked like me, but then again I know what I look like, lol, so I’ d also feel bad for the readers) but i do wish he’d just not address the fanworks. HIs choice, though.
-Intro Outro: I may be wading in too deep, but if he thinks that of Sherlock, that would mean Sherlock isn’t capable of a healthy relationship, and thinking teens are glamorizing would probably be a bit distributing.
Of course, heaven only knows what well-meaning fans shove in his face. Not pretending for one second it wouldn’t bother me.
Sherlock [BBC version] isn’t interested in relationships in men or women. [no idea about the books.] The fact he shows any genuine emotion towards Watson in S2 ‘I don’t have any friends, only you.” Was a real first admittance he was capable of feelings for other humans at all. He uses people, he is quite cold and calculating character and although they say the character doesn’t have Aspergers, the writers don’t half tap some aspects of this. Bit like, dare i say it, Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
That;s is why i think Benedict is trying to keep the shipping stuff out, it doesn’t have a place.
The characters are supposed to be “growing emotionally” according to showrunners (though I side eye S3 in some respects) so maybe we’ll get a Sherlock with more emotional maturity (but not TOO much lol) in S4.
@MissMary.
I don’t think Benedict or Martin have ever been fans of Johnlock. I think they found it amusing and were flattered by it in the beginning. But now, you can tell it just makes them uncomfortable. Example(s): People Tweeting death threats to Amanda and harassing her, TEH Q&A. When Johnlock was brought up during other Q&A’s, you could see the eye rolls and their facial expressions change. Clearly, they don’t care for it. I am not just talking about Benedict and Martin. I am also talking about Amanda, Steven and Mark. (Steven and Mark have been harassed, and accused of queerbaiting by extreme Johnlockers,
There are Johnlockers who are mature and realize that, Johnlock is not going to happen on the show.. They just stick to their fanfiction and their fantasies. Then there are the extreme Johnlockers, the ones who Tweeted death threats to Amanda. They harassed and threatened Loo Brealey, because of the whole Sherlolly being used as an example, of a ship in the Dictionary or whatever. They harassed Lara Pulver, said horrible things to her.
They are the ones who try to shove Johnlock down people’s throats. They harass and threaten people. They say you’re homophobic if you don’t ship it, or don’t think it’s happening on the show. Those Johnlockers give other Johnlockers a bad name/rep.
As for Martin. Read his interviews, I don’t think he has ever really taken it in stride. He’s made sarcastic remarks, he’s taken swipes at them.
(People are complaining about Benedict’s remarks in Out Magazine. Well here is what Martin said in Time Out Paris)
“It’s ridiculous. To me, they’re not fans of the show – they’re fans of a show going on their heads. If people want to imagine Watson and Holmes f**king, they’re more than welcome to, but it will have no bearing on what we do in the show.” (Martin Freeman)
@MissMary My impression is that Freeman, does not take himself as seriously as Benny.
@Icerose: I agree. I think AA takes him way more seriously than he takes himself, but that’s a ramble for a different thread, lol.
@Linz: You’re right. And, sadly, that level of “fandom” is what most performers are exposed to. I look at actors like Orlando Jones, for example, who sees all the crazy and all the not-crazy in the fandom for Sleepy Hollow and he handles it super well and is very kind to fans, even the ones who are a bit wtf, and wish more creators could be like that, but then I have to remember that not all creators are getting death threats or having explicit porn starring someone who looks like them shoved in their faces.
@Intro Outro, BC was not the slightest bit uncomfortable feeding the gay fan fictions about the “zygoma trio” and encouraged the internet to go for it.
Haha, so this is called Johnlock? As far as I understand, this also, erm, shows who’s the active part of the duo? 😛
@Grace, Rowling generally encouraged fanfiction and as far as I remember (it was all back at the beginning/in the middle of 2000’s) she acknowledged slash fanfiction, but she was specifically against pornography in fanfiction. Which, I think, is what Ben is protesting against. Because as MissMary said, there are quite a few papers about gay subtext of the canon books, and Mofftiss, even if they were getting cold feet later, kinda sorta catered to (and simultaneously mocked) this particular group of fans. I really hope that Ben is uncomfortable namely with pornography and low quality of the lion’s share of slash fanfiction, and not with the very possibility of attraction between Sherlock and John, because that would frankly make him look quite a hypocrite in his passion for and defence of Turing.
@Lilac, lol I forgot about that one! Yep, no discomfort there at all on *his* part 😀
@Lilacflowers
Very valid point.
@Intro Outro I think it’s just called Johnlock in general. People tend to go whatever rhymes better instead of reflecting who gives or takes these days. Unless people still do and I am completely wrong. Speaking of which, I did read BC’s interview and wonder how he came to know that. Imagine a conversation when that’s brought to his attention. LOL.
And I think you’re right. That may very well be the case, that both Rowling and BC are uncomfortable with pornography fanfiction rather than creativity amongst fans. And I do see where they are coming from. I’ve seen readers misinterpret author’s description on an abusive arrangement and took it as an act of love. (For another pairing but it can happen with any pairing, really.)
The reality of the situation is you can’t separate one from the other. You can’t tell someone you’re writing bad smut so you can’t write smut. (Look at what happens with 50 shades. I mean, the entire franchise is based on bad writing and bad BDSM etiquettes that are not identified as bad etiquettes.) You also can’t tell people there are innocent readers out there so you can’t be inspired by complex aspects of life and use it in your writing. The only thing you can do is tell fans to keep their eyes open, which not many people have done, if any at all. I do wonder why that is. Could this be because they’d have to go into details about it or they don’t have much of an informed opinion themselves?
i don’t understand armors, so i might be asking a stupid question. what is the basin thing under his face?
also, i think it’s cute that the medieval king’s armor has a built in crown 🙂
It’s to keep swords from lopping his head off. Normally, there would be armor over his face that fit into the “basin” but then you wouldn’t know it was Cumberbun.
Sorry to come in late, the “basin” is the visor which comes up to protect his face, Oddly though they usually come down rather than go up.
I’d say drool or lopped curls collector.
@BW thanks! that’s an interesting piece of armor. i did some googling right now, the technicalities of an armor is fascinating 😀
@Kiddo, lol! or somewhere to prop up the gatorade?
Who knows if he’s dating her? He could be dating anyone but I don’t think anyone’s stalking his very move because of it. People stalked his very move way before any of this nonsense.
I did see a # on twitter started by a Scottish tv company (I think) basically asking people to tweet if they saw him. It was really bad and not cool.
Yeah, it’s super weird and creepy but that’s social media and celebrity now. All famous people are fair game.
Agreed. And the sighting is suspect. He doesn’t look like Sherlock right now. And is he so discreet that even though he is I a semi private setting that he won’t even touch this woman that he may be dating (assuming it is even her)?
Can people also stop harassing every one with a twitter story on this guy? Each person who has been reporting sightings has been harrassed by obsessive fans, sad.
If I ever saw him out and about you can bet I wouldn’t go online and tell everyone.
(I’d calmly knock him over the head and drag him into my car like getting Mr. T on a plane.)
I don’t get this need to post pictures online or tweet where you saw him. You have the picture or whatever for you, you didn’t get it to share it with everyone.
Is he still in Scotland? Not seen any mention of doing press if he’s there for BAFTA screenings
He may just be there for the screening and the press presence will be involved that way. It happens sometimes for the smaller screenings that they just do the Q&A/press line before the showing.
Double post: Apparently he’s heading back to London and some folks are saying he was doing sherlock related stuff in Edinburgh–it’s ACD’s birthplace so maybe? Anyway, looks like no BAFTA screenings after all! (Which makes sense if the filming for Richard III is as tightly scheduled as folks were saying–they need to make the best of weather, etc to get those battles filmed!)
Someone posted that he was on their flight to Lindon earlier today.Sitting with a brunette lady…
Lol, he really went up to Edinburgh for SH’s mother’s 65th birthday party. He was in charge of the balloons…
😉
Someone also posted they saw him in London yesterday, which was wrong 😉 I’m a brunette, maybe it was me he was spotted with? And I’m about his height when I wear mid-height heels. And I have bangs… *shifty* the world may never know. (TBF people also said he was with an older woman who was not SH when he was in Edinburgh but that got swallowed by the “OMG WAKE UP GEEZ” posts from people desperate for this to be a thing).
@MissMary
It’s been posted on EB that someone’s said it was definatly SH on the plane with him.
Do any of you know if confirmation was on Twitter please?
@Kazlock.
She did not say that it was definitely Sophie. She said “I think so.”
Take it with a grain of salt.
At first, she said she didn’t recognize the woman. Then she was asked if she thought it was Sophie Hunter. Then she said “I think so” Doesn’t recognize her, but thinks it was Sophie?? Hmmm?
Another person claims they met Benedict on a plane today. They did not mention a woman. (Again, take these sightings/meetings with a grain of salt)
Kazlock! Haven’t we determined that EB is not a trustworthy source? lol.
Not condoning it at all, but I am a bit surprised no one has taken a photo of him/her on these planes or airports.
@Tara
Thought the same myself to be honest.
Not one person as taken a picture yet!
@Linz..thanks.
Seriously think someone should find SH a job!!
At least we’d have an idea then where she is!
Keep in mind, too, that these posters on Twitter saying “I just saw…” are being pinged by sock puppets and other twitters set up JUST to ask “was he with Sophie Hunter?” And most of them don’t know there’s an agenda. “Was he with Sophie Hunter? Here’s a pic.” Well, sure, she’s brunette…maybe? It’s all a tempest in a teapot.
MissMary
Am I still in denial and delusional do you think?
Because I really dislike the very thought of SH.
Honestly? I don’t see it. Never have. It reminds me of the Sian Clifford clusterf- in “the other guy’s” fandom last year or so. I think worrying about it is feeding the trolls, though. The level of sock puppet accounts on twitter and the “OMg GET OVER IT THEY’RE DATING GEEZ” is insane, esp considering all signs to the contrary.
he really isn’t doing it for me in the armour and wig at all. [except when he was sitting down smoking a fag] I think the problem lies with the costume department, the armour is too shiny, oversized and the crown is so golden that even a short sighted soldier could aim for that head and not miss. [yes, I know wearing his crown contributed to him being killed] But, I prefer it all to be a bit more dirty, rugged, simplier. It all looks rather Lego-Richard 111. The kind of knight you buy in a lego-kit for kids.
I much prefer Aneurin Barnard’s Richard 111, the armour and horse was a lot less ‘shiny’ there was mud on it for starters.
I’m really hoping they do a lot of work in post production.
Maybe because we didn’t see behind the scenes filming of the previous Hollow Crown but the visuals of this is leaving me cold.
And I agree 100% about the horse. I know they’re trained etc. but still.
Wont stop me watching it mind, I just wish we didn’t keep seeing filming shots like this.
(I’m aware by me commenting on here that I’m adding to it…)
I, too, hope post production is quite extensive.
I’m hoping they grunge it up some and make it less “RenFaire King Richard III” looking… I’m sure they will, esp given the success of the first round of the Hollow Crown, but I’m kind of antsy that this will be too shiny and too…well, shiny.
All the actors in battle in the first series looked better in their armour .James Purefoy looked epic and even Rory Kinnear looked was an improvement over those pictures, But by the time it reaches the screen it may look better.
Cigarettes tut tut. I do think it is time Tom starts his help Benedict Cumberbatch give up smoking campaign on twiiter.
@icerose, my thoughts immediately went to how much better Rory Kinnear looked in his armor too, which is probably the first time my mind has ever gone to Rory Kinnear without prodding. Jeremy Irons looked regal and powerful in his and this look is neither. While Joe Armstrong and He Who Shall Not Be Named looked positively stunning in theirs. And they looked good in the “Making of” segment of the DVDS so it wasn’t done post-filming. I’m Wondering if this production is going to be of the same quality all around. The other was part of something bigger, the Cultural Olympiad and there was no talk of a second series. This one seems like Mendes decided to just pull together actors who weren’t in the first and rush something out there just because the first got good reviews.
Hey Lilac and icerose, Rory isn’t all that asexual! 😀 Imo he can be very intense, but in a quiet and understated sort of way.
Mendes is a pretty great producer and director, I hope he knows exactly what he’s doing with THC2.
@Intro outro, has Rory ever been less than intense? I must confess that his name conjures up images of his Return to Cranford character and that is not an attractive vision. No matter what he’s doing – stealing a throne from Ben Whishaw or land from a child – I want Greg Wise or Jonathan Pryce to appear and slap him with a pair of gloves
@ Lilacflowers
But that’s what made Richard the 2nd so great.
@Lilacflower I know what you mean about the Olympiad it made the first series very special for the actors. I think Irons said it was one of the draws for him. Totally agree about how good the boys looked in their armour in the first series. Thea really went to town with he who shall not be named but has been by me.
Mendes produced the first Hollow Crown so he must have been pleased with the outcome and it must have been deemed successful as I believe they have upped the budget for this production. I do think they have gathered together any one who has the power to help sell the series. Having Judy Dench even in a small role will pull in the viewers.
I have to say I thought Mendes Lear at the National was great from an acting/staffing point of view but lacked any innovative flare.
I am not a huge Kinnear fan as I often find that je underplays his characters to the point of boredom and I particularly in Richard 11 it meant that he was overshadowed by Whishaw,
Dominic West is very much a theatre director as was Rupert Goode and for me anyway Richard 11 did not use the film medium as well as the Henry’s and often felt very theatrical. So it will be interesting to see what he does with this . He is very much a Royal Shakespeare director with a little bit of the more innovative Royal court thrown in. RSC productions although good tend to be quite traditional and he has no film experience so it will be interesting to see how it works out.
@Lilac and icerose, I have now seen Rory in several TV films and plays, and I prefer his Iago to his other roles. He is less understated in Othello and very natural – and generally brilliant. An absolutely deserved Olivier! I do agree that sometimes his understated acting threatens to become boring though. A very good point about him being completely outshone by Whishaw in Richard II due to it, for example.
I also agree with icerose about Goold not using TV medium as efficiently in Richard II as Eyre and Sharrock did in Henry IV and Henry V. It really did detract a little from Richard II’s general impact and quality.
My thoughts exactly. Nowhere near hot for me =/
Lego Richard III!
I’ve just realised i’ve given ‘someone’ on Twitter a new idea :-p LMAO
Yeah, the poor horse! Mind you when I’m Queen President I am banning racing too, and all horses will be repaid, in luxury and idleness, for their centuries of battle endurance.
(I would love to see Timothy Spall on Norton…as it were…..I’ve adored him since Auf Wiedersehen Pet)
I love tim spall too. Such a nice guy.
The OUT spread and interview are fabulous.
There’s a picture of him in a ratty sweater…YIKES!
I made that rip with my teeth.
You’re welcome
Yum.
I’m looking at the reconstruction of Richard III armour and it actually looks more or less like this.
The breastplate looks a bit narrow? And eventhough it does cover the heart,it exposes it from the side … I guess the gardbrace (is that what it’s called in Eng?) is missing?
The strangely shaped thing around his chin is just the bottom of Richard’s helmet. I guess he threw the top part off.
I hope he’ll ride to battle fully armed and somehow manage to loose parts of the armour. If he went like this, that would be just silly.
Not enough proof of dating. I don’t buy every sighting. I am sure he dates around, good for him. Just think he is too busy for a relationship.
Please tell me that they can make special lightweight armor for the poor horse’s sake. My BF has a bicycle that he uses for races that weighs nothing. Surely this can be done.
I’m sure it’s “stunt armor”–still pretty heavy but not “regulation strength”. I know there’s folks in my neck of the woods that raise horses trained to be ridden while armored and do the jousting runs, etc, for films and RenFaires and such, but i still can’t see how it’d be comfortable for the horse to be ridden with armor on even being trained to do the runs, etc. A heavy guy on your back with metal bits is still a heavy guy on your back with metal bits.
From the last Hollow Crown series, the “metal” armor was actually rubber and painted to look like metal.
that is pretty awesome, actually, lol.
I feel sorry for the horse with all that armour, and I feel sorry for Benedict, with idiot stalker fans everywhere he goes. The people in Edinburgh who wrote that article were writing like it was all in good fun/a game of wits, but let’s call it what it is: stalking. Let the poor man have some privacy.
Agree, that Edinburgh article was not cool. Running around the city trying to find this guy? What would they do if they did find him? They’d be bothering/harassing him while he’s just trying to enjoy some personal time.
There’s always going to be tweeters who say, ‘Just saw Ben” etc, and are excited and that’s fine. But to actively go out searching for him is too much.
Yes, mainstream press encouraging stalking is really over the line. He’s a human being, not Item #6 on some weird scavenger hunt game.
I am jealous of him being in Edinburgh- it’s one of my favorite places on the planet.
As much as I love the Batch, the Richard III look is decidedly NOT hot, imho. The man himself is hot, but the look is not. Btw, Kaiser, I think they’re dating, too. Can’t say I’m much of a “fan” of Ms. Hunter, but I don’t have to be, he does, right? Mazel tov to them.
I finally figured it all out by using astrology and reading every post about BC and SH. SH is playing Ophelia in BC’s Hamlet! And then she’s going to star in AND direct the Sherlock Christmas Special! Mystery solved!!!
@anon – Bingo!!! You’re a genius! LOL!
I love a handsome man in horseback, so I’m going to vote “Hot”
Also, it’s amazing to me that he was doing this the day after the BFI/LFF events, and then after filming battle scenes he was right back to attending a swanky press dinner, looking suave.
NOB–his energy level is amazing. He seems very Zen to me; he always appears to have a joyful calm despite all the stuff that swirls around him. And he is gracious and polite to boot.
I’ve been trying really hard to ignore it all, but i am getting really bored with this Sophie-stuff and oscar-stuff. Is it possible to turn back time to when Benedict was a normal quirky actor and no one gave two poo’s about Oscar’s and his fecking love life?
I think Benedict is the kind of actor that won’t cope with this for long, now Hamlet is sold out and soon as the dust has settled over Imitation Game, he is going to get very tired of all the fan-crazy very very quickly.
I loved Benedict back in the early days before the world had discovered Moffat’s Sherlock. He was not what you would call a hot actor but I looked forward to his performances.
You know, I have to agree. This is the biggest reason why I NEVER want any of my fav actors to become Oscar contenders. Actually, any European film prize is better as far as I am concerned. There’s so much unhealthy buzz that it kills all natural attraction.
I also realise that partly it’s the fandom that is to blame. I mean, look at Cumberbatch’s IMDb forums. Do those people care about anything else but Oscars and secret girlfriends? (I do believe they do, but the way it all looks from the outside is quite… thirsty.)
I so agree about European awards and they also choose from a wider cross section of films including foreign films and smaller art house productions.
The Oscar stuff is going to intensify. And yes, he IS campaigning. That’s why he is on so many magazine covers and doing so many photoshoots and interviews claiming he is too busy to campaign. Late night talk shows are not the only way to campaign. Melissa Leo aggressively bombarded trade publications with “For your consideration” ads to get hers. Somebody who shows up on multiple magazine covets in November and December is thirsty for Oscar.
he is definitely campaigning – as soon as his acting break in the Hollow Crown comes he will be off to America, probably in a couple weeks. However, he may need to calm down the politics and the stuff about beheadings and the religious right. LOL [I hope not – because he is spot on]
Of course he is campaigning not only via his publicity but by building up Turing’s importance with all the quotes about recognition etc. On top of that he seems to be using the articles to address any criticism which might deter potential nominations.. I just wish sometimes he was a bit less obvious.
@P’enny To right some Americans on my facebook were a put off by his comments on how America needed a women or gay president Not because of the gay or women issues but because it is not even his country, Mind you I did wonder at the time if he was misquoted because it was not the most tactful remark to make.
@Lilacflowers: you’re so right. And the “I’m not campaigning” campaign is a good way to go if you don’t want to look Sean Young levels of thirsty. It can be downplayed as “well, I wasn’t doing this for an award” if a nom doesn’t come, or “well, I had been hoping but i didn’t want to make the focus of the promotions on awards” if the nom is given. (Or however folks want to spin it lol).
I understand that is is a gossip site, but I’m sick of all this SH and Oscar stuff. It’s just annoying and complete crap. Fact is, Cumberbatch is a terrific actor and that’s all that matters. If that doesn’t work, there’s this instead: ’33 Times Otters Saved The World Just By Being Adorable’. 😀

Apparently the “Florals” had their way with him….Poor boy. Need a cuppa?

Haha, he actually does look in that pic as though somebody had their way with him. Or as if he’s just read a particularly graphic Johnlock fanfic 😛 *pats Ben on the back*
Here is dare I say it and interesting article on Turing which whether you agree with it or not puts forward a very different interpretation on his life.

LOL Definitely not. This guy is not the macho type.
Tom Hiddleston did it better.
