L&S: The Queen is ‘unimpressed’ with Duchess Kate, ‘enough is enough’

life style

Last week, Duchess Kate did three public events in three days. Those were her first public events since August, and the first since her second pregnancy was announced. People joked about how Kate was working her fingers to the bone by attending fancy galas, but according to Life & Style, the Queen was not amused. Allegedly, the Queen ordered Kate to get back to work because… the Queen is awesome? Because the Queen is 88 years old and she manages to do hundreds of public events a year with no whining? Some highlights from the cover story:

Kate Middleton may be back to work following her bout with hyperemesis gravidarum, an acute form of pregnancy-related morning sickness, but according to a new report, the expectant Duchess of Cambridge was not ready to return to public life. Life & Style magazine is reporting that Middleton was “bullied” into resuming her royal duties by her grandmother-in-law, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Despite Kate’s illness that required weeks of medical attention for severe dehydration, sources claim that Queen Elizabeth, 88, “commanded” Middleton, 32, to return to her duties earlier this month. The report follows Middleton’s first public outing to the Royal Garden Hotel in London on Oct. 21, weeks after the palace announced her second pregnancy Sept. 8. The outing also came just one day after the the Clarence House confirmed that Middleton, due in April 2015, was still being affected by the pregnancy illness.

“The queen has been unimpressed at the amount of official business Kate has missed out on. She feels enough is enough, duty comes first and it was time for Kate to step up to the plate,” an insider told the magazine in their Nov. 10 print issue.

According to the magazine, the monarch, who worked during her own four pregnancies, felt strongly that Middleton must follow suit. “Elizabeth’s pregnancies were easy compared to Kate’s so she doesn’t understand just how bad Kate’s been feeling . Queen Elizabeth has a very strong work ethic and has hardly had to cancel any royal duties during her lifetime due to ill health. She will always put work first and believes Kate should be doing the same,” a source said.

While Middleton did return to work last week after canceling several high-profile appearances including her first solo trip to Malta last month, she is still reportedly suffering from the effects of hyperemesis gravidarum. “She has been feeling absolutely horrific,” said an insider.

According to the tabloid, her decision to work while ill has her husband, Britain’s Prince William, concerned. “William actually feels like she should have more bed rest, even if it’s against his grandmother’s wishes,” a source said.

While Middleton appears to have heeded the queen’s rumored demands, the magazine notes that “Kate doesn’t have much of a relationship with the queen,” citing a “royal insider.”

[From IB Times]

Life & Style also claims that the Queen is “downright rude to Kate’s family,” and the Queen has “bullied” Kate over her Marilyn Moments, and “still thinks of the Duchess as a commoner.” For what it’s worth, Gossip Cop’s palace source says none of this is true. But it FEELS truthy, doesn’t it? I tend to think Kate aims to please William and Charles, and if they’re fine with her staying at her parents’ house and barfing for months, then that’s what she’s going to do. It also seems truthy that the Queen wouldn’t understand Kate’s coddling. The Queen has always been a workhorse, even to the detriment of her family life. Oh, and I hope the Queen is saying something to Kate about all of the Marilyn Moments. Someone needs to say something!! For the love of God.

What’s the deal with the “Marilyn moments?” Has it really happened that much? I rarely click on posts about the royal family but when I have, I haven’t really noticed these moments that keep getting mentioned. Did I miss them all?

    • Sunny says:

It has happened a few times that I can remember(like 3 off the top of my head).

If this is true, I feel sorry for Kate. I mean, yes she was lazy before being pregnant but if she is feeling awful right now she has the luxury of not having to work and being able to take time off.

That being said, as soon as she feels better she should get back to work. The Queen has taken her position and work seriously her whole life and it must kill her that lazy Will and Kate want all the privileges with non of the responsibility.

      • LadySlippers says:

It’s close to 20 times now.

      • Mina says:

Except she is NOT sick, and never was.

I remember when the whole HG thing originated. It was hinted at by a Daily Mail article, where they talked about the pregnancy announcement, then in a completely unrelated section within the same article, they casually mentioned that HG exists and what it is. They did mention she was not officially diagnosed as having HG, but after a while they stopped mentioning that bit. Once the association was made in the public’s mind, other sources ran with it. It has been the press’ excuse for her ever since.

Does anyone seriously think the Queen never worked while feeling ill? She has, within limitations, and she keeps working because it is her duty. She knows that being present is the least she can do. so she sucks it up and works anyway because that is what a royal does: public service is more important than personal discomforts.

In the Queen’s eyes, Kate is acting like too much of a special snowflake to understand her duties. That is what she means by caller her “commoner”. A vague analogy: being royal is like wearing high heels in that you know it’s uncomfortable, but one you get the hang of it, it really sets you apart from those who can’t walk in heels, complain about them, and take them off before the night’s over. Those would be the commoners.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Mina•

Both pregnancies had statements from their press office stating Kate had HG. And then follow-up comments relating to her HG. Sorry what you wrote isn’t true.

And for the record, I questioned the diagnosis for both pregnancies.

      • FLORC says:

        Mina
That’s not a fair claim. It’s very likely Kate had morning sickness. And very likely her 1st prgnancy hospital stay was due to Noro Virus. Because her children are heirs to the throne extra care is taken. A cough demands priority care.

I do agree. She should have a better grip on how to act, what to wear, what not to flash, and how often to work. There’s no excuse at this point.

And poor L&S! Always late to the party, but they do try. The Queen is so hands off. She might think these things, and the royal courtiers might pass feelings down the pipe, but this article is full of assumptions.

      • Inconceivable! says:

The Queen’s husband has certainly missed quite a few public appearances for his illnesses. I would hope the Queen listens to Kate’s doctors more so than her own Royal medical opinion.

      • notasugarhere says:

At age 93 (93! Ninety-Three! NINETY-THREE FFS!), after 67 years of service to Queen and country (plus his time serving in WWII and beyond), Prince Philip has earned the right to the occasional sick leave. At 32, Kate Middleton seems like a spoiled and precious snowflake — before, during, and after pregnancy.

      • wolfpup says:

I believe that at 93 years, the Queen knows what going around…(!) She must think that there are a plethora of excuses, that are not.

      • bluhare says:

The queen’s husband does more engagements than William and Kate put together.

      • FLORC says:

        1. This isn’t the Queen’s opinion. It’s L&S speculating the Queen’s opinion.
        2. Philip had exploratory adominal surgery. Search that. Dates of articles around June 6 and 7 of last year. Also, at his age the risk is quite great. You need a good reason and do it as a last resort. The complications and risks are high with death as a likely result. And he still didn’t take that much time off. He continued to work as much as he could. Even if it wasn’t an event where it’s more of a photo op.
You cannot compare Kate’s situation to Philips. Not in health. Not in time off. Not at all.

      • Mina says:

        LadySlippers and FLORC.

It IS true. Those statements were conveniently made AFTER the Daily Mail had rolled with it. Midds planted the rumor themselves, as they do. The press statement was also made once Prince Charles put William in charge of his and Kate’s own press. I’m also right to say everyone forgot about those details and it is not taken as fact. HG was never the official diagnosis during her stay at the hospital, which was also confirmed by that awful prank call from the Australian radio station.

        Heavy morning sickness, sure.
        HG, not so much.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Mina•

The BRF could care less what a tabloid says about them. And the DM *has* said numerous things before (and since) that have never been addressed by the various press teams at BP/KP/SJP/CH.

Sorry. Your ‘evidence’ just doesn’t support the fact that KP maintains that Kate has had HG twice now. Any tabloid report is irrelevant.

        :ETA:

William and Harry had their own press office before William’s married. And regardless of which office originally put the statement out — both Charles’ and HM’s press offices corroborated the info.

      • Inconceivable! says:

But shouldn’t Kate’s “return to work” date be set by her royal doctor and not the Queen? If her doctor says she should continue on bed rest….why should the Queen overrule a medical professional?

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Inconceivable•

Yes. That’s exactly why this story is a load of crap. The Queen has NEVER flouted medical opinion as this article suggests. Anytime she’s been asked by a medical professional to do something she has. Case in point, she has bad knees (needed knee surgery a few years back) and her back can be troublesome as well. Her doctors recommended she cut down on a few specific engagements like, awarding people medals, as it strained her back and knees, bending over. Now you see family members picking up the slack when she is unable or shouldn’t perform that task (she still does but not as frequently as before). Another example, Sophie had to take maternity leave for Louise’s pregnancy and birth. HM was *extremely* supportive and even broke protocol to visit Sophie in the hospital (Sophie and Louise both almost died). If you need to take a break from Royal duties — she’s not going to contradict that.

Plus, when we saw Kate in her most recent engagements, with the exception of a few random shots, she looked well on her way to a full recovery. Not at all like someone who’s been forced against her will to attend a few functions. In fact, Kate even stated she was excited to get out of the house. That hardly sounds like someone being bullied.

I could go on and on but this article is just bunk. Straight up bunk.

      • Selena Castle says:

The main reason we know this story is rubbish is because the Queen would not want Kate out there if she has hyperemesis. Simply put, would the royal family be happy about Kate having to interrupt a speech or leave a table, quickly running for a toilet to vomit, perhaps not making it? It’s ok for the rest of us who do not have photographers following us everywhere but imagine the headlines “Kate Vomits On Obama’s Shoes: Exclusive Pictures Inside”.
I know when I was pregnant I had this awful condition through both pregnancies. I did not feel ill all the time but would vomit at a moments notice. I was lucky. I was a teacher at the time and was able to make it out of the class room on most occasions. But the embarrassment of the two times I could not will last with me forever. I can’t imagine if I had photographers there to immortalise the occasions.

      • FLORC says:

        Mina
It’s been supported from official press releases to journalist reporting that Kate has been diagnosed with HG. I think she’s over treated. That is the norm for who ever was going to be in her position.
Still, that doesn’t mean it’s accurate. Press releases in the past have been proven to be flat out lies. Time will prove this 1 true or false as well.

And what LadySlippers said. I’m with all of that.

      • Sassy says:

The Queen and Prince Phillip are remarkable examples of longevity. Still showing up and saluting. One cannot compare a young woman like Kate with severe morning sickness to these two sterling examples of dedication to country. They also have kept a difficult family together through many travails. I am from USA and absolutely revere Queen Elizabeth. So – Do not criticize her – ever! 🙂

    • pantanlones en fuego says:

It’s happened several times. There is a picture of her when they were in New Zealand and she was either not wearing panties or wearing a thong and you can straight up see her entire arse. It’s totally preventable because she can have weights sewn into the hems of her dresses like the queen supposedly does.

      • FLORC says:

        Or wear underwear.
The incident I think you’re refering to is the DVF wrap dress. In other shots Williams looks to be scolding her and she looks distressed holding her dress down next to the helicopter.
While I love a DVF dress and they are great quality, but can be a bit sheer in the light of day.

      • angelique says:

Yeah, underwear is always a good idea. Pants are a sure thing when walking on a tarmac or climbing out of a helicopter.
Question: Why doesn’t Waity wear those horrendous jeggings on windy days?

      • FLORC says:

        Angelique
She has worn those jeggins on windy days. I get she likes wearing dresses. And likes riding in helicopters. She should just be more aware of the cameras and the image she’s there to project.

    • The Original Mia says:

It’s happened 14 times by last count, and that includes the nude shots from France, butt shots in Canada, New Zealand, society weddings.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Mia•

It’s now higher than that. 14 was before their NZ/Australia tour.

      • wolfpup says:

I bet that the Queen does not like all of the chuckling over Kate’s immodesty. So unladylike! (after all!) Don’t commoners and aristocrats look to the crown for all things etiquette? Adviser Carol apparently doesn’t know the rules either. (HaHa!)

Kate just looks like a jet-set girl to me. No points for good manners or caring for anyone but her family group. I not sure what a commoner is, but she *is* common. She’s done nothing to show that she cares for the common man, other than to out run the girls for a jackpot. I wonder if an aristo girl would have done better, shining royal?

    • PennyLane says:

The Canada arrival pictures are amazing. They’re getting off the plane, Duchess Kate is wearing this really pretty yellow dress, she looks lovely, William is there, all the uniformed people are standing around, everyone’s smiling…and then the wind kicks in. The skirt is blown up past her waist. The photos are from behind only.

Well! It turns out that Duchess Kate does not like to weight her hems, and she sometimes does not wear underwear either. That day was one of those times – Kate’s very cute bum was completely on display for the world to see.

      • wolfpup says:

I bet that they have “quickies” on the plane. I wonder how many times that they have joined the “mile-high” club. I wouldn’t normally wonder about such a thing, except, well, duh – No panties!

      • The Original Mia says:

@wolfpup, I actually thought the same thing. That it’s all well and freaky until the wind blows up her dress and everybody sees her arse.

      • Lex says:

She was wearing a g string in those pictures. It looked like bare arse but it wasnt

      • Suzanne says:

Are we SURE she doesn’t like underwear or she had a thong on that would appear like she had none on? This girl isn’t your standard British Royal or she would be thinking more like the Queen. Wind blows. Skirts rise. Be prepared for the unexpected. WEAR SOME DAMN BRITCHES UNDER YOUR DRESSES…Unless of course you ENJOY showing your bottom to the world.

    • CAD says:

The first thing we saw when Duchess Kate stepped off the plane in New Zealand was a flash of the Royal Knickers as her dress blew up in the wind. She was landing in Wellington, a city known for its wind. You’d think that after that happened she’d plan ahead so there were no repeats, but it was the first of several similar incidents on the same tour. I can’t fathom why she’d let it happen, unless she’s a major exhibitionist.

      • Vava says:

a pencil skirt would have worked.

      • taxi says:

Known by whom for its wind? How many in the Northern Hemisphere really know that?
I agree that this duchess could learn a bit more about the value of heavier fabrics, weights, and petticoats.

  2. Kaya says:

    This family is so… Irrelevant

  3. Nur says:

I dont know what to think about this mess anymore. If she is indeed being scolded, it should be more to do with her lack of work ethic before the pregnancy. I dont know for sure if she has HG, but if she was feeling as horrible as I was, theres no way anyone can work under those circumstances. Its not smth you can overcome by toughening up. On the other hand, had she done a better job prior her pregnancies, Im sure ppl would be willing to oversee a lot more.

    • mernymerlyn says:

A friend of mine had that when she was pregnant with twins and it was horrible.
She was constantly sick and couldn’t keep anything down. She had a portable IV on her for the first 6 months so she and the babies could get some nourishment.
You would never have known she was pregnant, much less with twins. I called her Bella because the babies literally sucked the life out of her.
      Luckily they were both healthy.

    • wolfpup says:

If this story is true, or even close to the truth, I believe that everyone should support the Queen of England in telling Kate to start troubling herself with the business of being royal. Apparently Carol only knows about curtsying…

I don’t think that the Queen is giving Kate a pass because of her lazy hubby. We all have to take responsibility for ourselves, and not blame someone else for personal failure. I don’t believe that co-dependence is allowed. She is 31 and not 21!!! Grow up Kate! – be a whole woman – *it is all that* – promise.

  4. Birdix says:

The queen really is remarkably busy and active for any age. And beautiful.

  5. Irishserra says:

This is all so stupid. But I will play along.

I’m sure if Kate had hustled her butt at any other time since her marriage, she would not be getting so much flack from the queen and the public in general. Sadly, she’s behaving like many millennials these days (I didn’t say all, don’t poop bricks now) with the lazy entitled attitude.

    • bettyrose says:

▲ This! If she’d proven herself already there wouldn’t be an issue now.

    • sienna says:

      Exactly!

    • INeedANap says:

This is what I was thinking too — folks would be willing to cut Waity a lot more slack if she had been a full-time working royal beforehand. Like, if she had been busy and really promoting the family and her charities, this would obviously be a case of a rough pregnancy. As it is, we’re left with conspiracy theories.

  6. Megan says:

L&S must be short of their sales targets. The queen is many things, but a bully? No, I’m not buying that.

    • wolfpup says:

No, I don’t believe that the Queen is a bully, but she is the Queen of England! This is the family which Kate chose to become part of; and she’s slipping up. Time to do better. Oh, I hope that the Queen gets involved. One can’t count on Charles, because for him, that is what he is all about – himself! Big koodles and fist bumps to him, but his self-centeredness does no one any favors.

Hope the Queen gets all of them in line before she goes. We need some backbone to keep this royal thing afloat!

      • Feeshalori says:

Eh, I think the Queen is just too tired and old to care about the shenanigans of her family, and she never had the reputation for bullying tactics. She’s probably concerned about her own legacy and is leaving it to Charles to sort it all out when she’s gone to the great kingdom in the sky.

  7. Nick says:

“still thinks of the Duchess as a commoner”

So because Kate was not born into a royal family she is below Will, Harry or the Queen? I hate the commoner word. I hope the Queen, Will, and Harry etc realize that they were not elected and that they just happened to be born to “royalty”. Have a problem with Kate’s wardrobe disasters, her eyeliner, and her laziness etc but not because she is a “commoner”

    • notasugarhere says:

As if any of this were true. BTW, HM openly adores Sophie Wessex (commoner) and Autumn Philips (commoner). If HM doesn’t like Kate Middleton it could be because KM acts “common” (and is lazy) NOT because she was born a commoner.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •notasugarhere•

HM also adores her family, many of which STILL are commoners, Anne and Harry for example. So until you hold a title yourself, you are considered a commoner (which at one point was everyone in her family).

      • Hazel says:

??? I thought Anne was the Princess Royal? Is that not titular enough? And both Anne & Harry were born Princess & Prince, respectively. Those aren’t titles? So confusing. Much easier to be a ‘commoner’.

    • wolfpup says:

Do not the royals have the responsibility of showing higher moral ground? Aren’t they the people we are to look up to, in time of crisis? Kate seems to be showing little other than a jet-set mentality; and for that all you need is money. We are all common, bottom line, but aren’t we to look up these national figures because they are admirable, and in ways that don’t have to do with money?.

      • Hazel says:

Oooh, I don’t know about a ‘higher moral ground’. I think throughout history royals have shown quite the opposite!

  8. murphy says:

If it were the Queen who were telling her to get her sh*t together, she would be doing lots of morning events opening school wings, meeting with the elderly–the nitty gritty work—not just state visits and gala events. I’m guessing Kate’s people finally got sick of all the bad press and picked something easy and fun for her to do to get everyone off their backs.

Also I don’t believe for a second that Kate has ever had HG. Maybe if she wasn’t so lazy when she’s not pregnant it would be more believable.

    • FLORC says:

      Murphy
It seems people here are only thinking of HG as what it was years ago. The requirements were much more severe. Now it’s a bit easier. Although, I think at best she was boredline at some point for that diagnosis. Judging from how she looked and acted when W&K were spotted at the train station carrying her own bags to how they looked while having a dinner out in public to Kate’s 1st event since that talk. She looked fine before and she looks fine now. Tired and having experienced normal morning sickness? Yes. Severe symptoms associated with HG and horomones being out of balance? That’s a stretch to believe just based on what we’re seeing.

      • wolfpup says:

Maybe we are not seeing the pair working, because they’ve been on vacation again. They try to take those when we are not looking.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Yup , that’s how they got caught out in France, sneaking on a holiday during the Paralympics.

  9. AuroraO says:

Her only job is to have William’s kids.

    • Courtney says:

      +1

    • inthekitchen says:

I disagree. I think that is one of her (and Willy’s) main roles/jobs. But she also has to be a supportive and active consort. She’ll soon be done having children…and then what? She should be allowed to just move back into her parent’s house? If that’s the life she wanted to lead, she shouldn’t have married into a family whose job it is to serve the public.

Can you imagine the uproar if Camilla never worked, lived in her pre-marriage home year-round (after refurbishing 2 expensive properties), attended the occasional gala or movie premiere…but that was it? I think she and Charles would be ripped into shreds! Or even Phillip, or Sophie? The entire family takes way too much from the public to lead completely private lives.

    • notasugarhere says:

If you believe that, how incredibly misogynistic of you. Women are wombs only? Hundreds of people in line to the throne, no need for these two to reproduce.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •notasugarhere•

Thousands actually. I just ran across someone who’s numbered in the 2200’s in the BRF Line of Succession. So no, there won’t be a sucession crisis anytime soon in the UK due to that. Lol

      • bluhare says:

Royal women are broodmares especially those in direct line. Always have been. Might be misogynistic but that’s the royals for you. Even William looked at the interviewer with a look when asked whether he and Kate were going to have children during their engagement interview. It’s a given and I’ve read it here. Maybe even said by me. 🙂

      • AuroraO says:

It’s just the plain truth. That’s her job.

  10. Talie says:

She really needs to put William in his place more.

  11. The Original Mia says:

Good. Kate is being coddled. She’s obviously not suffering from HG if she can travel in a carriage, board a plane to Scotland with the hubby. She has/had morning sickness. She cancels charity events, but let there be a gala, and her butt is up and moving and flipping her hair. Also…I’m sure the Queen was less than pleased with her mullet dress that did Kim Kardashian proud.

Kate is a special snowflake who can’t get a hangnail without the world stopping to take notice. Every illness is a major, life-threatening illness. For someone like the Queen who has lived through a world war, the blitzkrieg of London, works in sickness and in health and is approaching her 90th birthday shortly, Kate must make her roll her eyes hard.

As for her treatment of the Midds, who cares? They aren’t friends. They aren’t close. Why should she afford them anything other than common courtesy?

    • Jaded says:

Yup! The BRF stayed in London during most of the blitz. The Queen drove an ambulance during WWII and the Queen Mum was constantly out in the bombed out areas – remember her comment when Buckingham Palace was hit: “I’m glad we’ve been bombed. It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face.” The Queen totally took possession of and owned her job, at a very young age, to help England through a horrific war. Can you see Middleton doing that if there was a major terrorist attack in the UK? Hell no, she and Willnot would head for the hills quicker than you can say butt flash. She is lazy, unfocused, weak and a complete parasite as far as I can see.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        +1well said Mia.

      • FLORC says:

        Jaded
You can’t forget the Queen was originally not encouraged to go out and help in the war in such a way. She went out on her own. Learned how to dismantle and rebuild an engine. And then drove the vehicle through the BP gates. Pretty amazing. And very inspiring considering the times and hardship.

Part of me thinks the times and circumstances make the person. Kate has only known ease of life/finances. Her mother worked hard so that her children would never know what she struggled to get away from. And in doing that possibly also took away the circumstances that would light a fire in the Middleton children.

  12. LadySlippers says:

This doesn’t feel ‘truthy’ because the Queen isn’t a bully. She’s a lot of things but not that. And L&S isn’t known for their quality journalism either.

Also, I’ve posted quotes where others have stated that neither the Queen or Charles orders people about as everyone has to make their own way as a Royal.

Nope this is a grasp to make waves in the tabloids. Nothing more.

    :ETA:

From the cover: 14lbs underweight. That might be true but the pregnancy isn’t the cause, she’s gained weight since Aug (not much but it is noticeable).

    • Vava says:

As usual, I completely agree with you! <3

    • inthekitchen says:

I would also have to add that defining a ‘bully’ as someone who wants Kate to work is ridiculous! That would be like calling your boss a bully because s/he has the gall to ask you to do your job. That’s not bullying…that’s wanting you to step up and do the job you signed on for.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •inthekitchen•

True. There is that. But HM isn’t a bully in any shape or form. When Diana needed to back off from Royal duties post-separation she was very supportive. And Diana is just one example that readily came to mind.

If a medical professional advised someone to do one thing, HM certainly isn’t going to contradict that. IMO it’s silly to think otherwise.

      • Dena says:

But the undertone is not QEII as bully but Kate as victim to be pitied and protected. The latter narrative is more problematic than the former IMO. One reason is that the Queen’s legacy & reputation are set. In a real sense, primarily due to their ages, the sun has already set on QEII and the DOE. They don’t need to pave any roads forward. However, Willnot and Kannot are just beginning their journey.

The working memory of the living public connects the BRF with some notion of work & service. Like them or hate them but QEII, Charles, Anne & the DOE have cast a long shadow in that direction. I don’t follow Andrew and Edward but even they can point to some “work-life” they have either pursued or tried to development–good, bad or crooked. Harry, Eugenic and even Beatrice are trying to pursue socially acceptable “careers.” Zara and her brother have been doing that for awhile. The standards and expectations for the BRF have been changed and are changing due to modernity. Willnot & Kannot need to get onboard or they and their progeny will be living the life of private, obscene wealth within the next couple of generations because the public will only tolerate so much without a perceived (if not real) return on their investment.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Dena•

I personally think both undertones are equally problematic as we tap into two very typical archetypes for women: the b!tch/witch/hag (in this case HM) and the saintly mother (Kate). Neither are truthful as they are archetypes, and thus, skews the public’s perceptions greatly.

In William’s case — I think it has more to do with the fact he hasn’t ‘found his feet’ per se and is struggling to come to grips with his role in life. I know he *claims* to have come to terms with it but overwhelming evidence states otherwise. Until he ‘finds his feet’ we won’t see much of Kate. And both QEII and Charles do allow people to find their own way as a Royal — which like most things is both a good and a bad thing.

    • FLORC says:

Yea, this story plays to popular opinion and common sense, but I doubt it happened. Or that L&S has any type of link to a royal insider.

Regarding the underweight part. Yes! Kate was very thin to begin with. If underweight is her baseline the weight she appears to be at now looks compltely healthy and normal for how far along she is, type of build, etc… She’s gaining at a perfectly normal and healthy rate imo.
      And that’s a good thing.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Florc•

My *guess* is Kate was prob running about 5-10lbs underweight pre-pregnancy and she, at last engagement, looked to have gained about 5lbs back. Not a lot but enough to fill in her face and pad her a bit more.

I wish the tabloids didn’t cater to the lowest common denominator — this is what a lot of people think is actually true. 😢

      • wolfpup says:

She really does look better with a healthy weight. Probably feels better too. If so, HG was good for her.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •wolfpup•

Pregnancy suits Kate as she puts on some much needed weight. Trust me, HG (or even severe morning sickness) suits no one!

      • bluhare says:

FLORC, I think L&S is the magazine who Jessica Hay (Kate’s school chum) sells stories. Could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s the one she’s been associated with. No clue if Jessica Hay knows anyone with any real insight as to what goes on with the royals, though. And I think bullying is definitely the wrong term to use; it’s designed to get sympathy for poor, picked on Kate.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •bluhare•

No she sells her stories to a British tabloid* — The Sun maybe?!? Tanna often repeats her comments too.

*L&S is an American tabloid which drastically reduces its legitimacy.

  13. Skins says:

Commoners, peasants, oh dear. What is a Royal to do?

  14. PennyLane says:

It’s ironic that Queen Elizabeth is complaining that her grandson’s wife is a commoner, considering that her treatment of Princess Diana is what made it impossible for WIlliam to marry someone from the titled gentry.

Diana was treated so badly by The Firm during the later years of her marriage and after the divorce that people in their own social set refused to consider William as a potential husband. Why should they? If you could have a horsey, monied, private life where you can do what you want when you want to do it, why would you willingly put yourself under your grandmother-in-law’s thumb?

Just one example: the royal family refused to provide Diana with any sort of a security detail after the divorce. Her divorce settlement was so “small” ($15 million) that if she had used it to pay for her security, it would have been gone in about 20 years. She was 36 at the time of the divorce. Fifteen million pounds sounds like an awful lot of money, but for that level of society and lifestyle it really isn’t. They basically tossed her into the wilderness after she produced two healthy male heirs for them. One of the reasons Diana was with that guy when she died was because he was able to provide major security resources for her to use (or at least that’s what was thought before the accident…).

I mean, come on! If you were rich and well-connected, would you want your daughter to marry into that kind of a family?

    • Bucky says:

It is highly, highly doubtful that she’s complaining at all. This doesn’t sound characteristic of the Queen. In fact, it goes against pretty much all reports about her personality and her preferred way of handling family issues.

Life & Style needed to sell magazines and made up a bunch of crap to do it.

    • m says:

      None of this is true.
Diana was supported by the royal family to start with, especially Prince Philip who Diana said wrote her a letter expressing his support during the divorce. He said that he had to publicly support his son but Charles was an idiot and he was with Diana. It wasny until after Dianas Panorama interview that he lost respect for her.
As for security- they offered her use of protection but she didn’t want it because she was paranoid and convinced they would spy on her.
Dianas divorce settlement was massive. I dont know where you got $15 million from, but it was far more than that as it came from the Duchy of Cornwall. Her sons both inherited $30 million each (before taxes), her family inherited some, and quite a bit was donated to her charites. In addition, she never would have been expected to pay for RPOs herself as they came with the title.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •m•

It was £17 million and Charles had to borrow money from Mummy to pay it. Now if she’d been talking about Sarah, her settlement is a huge reason she finds herself strapped for cash since she got almost nothing post divorce (see comments below).

All the monies are easily verified on the web too.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •PennyLane•

Your statements are full of inaccuracies.

In ’93 or ’94 (can’t remember which) Diana felt that in order to be ‘normal’ she needed to do away with her Royal Protection Officers (RPOs). Charles and HM tried to talk her out of it but no-go, Diana had made up her mind. On the same lines, Diana relinquished her HRH status too (thinking it would normalise her life) but not thinking of the ramifications of the loss.

HM is not a frigid cold woman — duty bound yes. And she genuinely cared/cares about both Diana and Sarah. Diana received a £17 million settlement that Charles had to borrow money from his mother to meet. It wasn’t as large as what Diana wanted but it allowed her financial freedom. The same could not be said of Sarah’s settlement (£3 million but most was earmarked for her daughters).

Most people do not want to marry into any Royal family because of the severe limitations and restrictions it imposes. This is true all over the world, not just the UK.

And FYI the Middleton’s are NOT titled or even landed gentry. They are straight-up middle class all the way.

      • FLORC says:

Agree LS, m, and Bucky. The above comment is a work of fiction.

        And LadySlippers
I remember reading some time ago that there;s a standard divorce contract for royals and spouses. You get a set number pay out depending on this and that. The payout goes up if you give up your title. It’s a lower payout if you choose to keep the title. Is that not the case?

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Florc•

I have never read that before. It might NOW be true but it certainly wasn’t then.

      • Green Girl says:

As usual, you bring an informed and interesting point to the discussion, LadySlippers! As an aside, can you imagine being the attorneys in charge of a royal pre-nup or divorce? I’d think it would be a niche corner of the law, and it’s one you don’t get to practice all that often – but ooooh, do you have to know what you’re doing!

      • Lady D says:

LadySlippers, how did Diana manage to leave 60 million for her sons, plus gave to family and charities if she was given 17 million? Was she independently wealthy before her marriage, or did the boys inheritance grow massively while they did?

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Green Girl•

Thank you! I’ve been following the BRF for over 3 decades now and thoroughly enjoy all kinds of history. 😊

I agree, being an attorney working for any of the Royals has to be challenging. Yikes! lol

        •Lady D•

Diana had some money prior to the divorce but not much (from family trust funds). Her £17 million that was split between the boys had time to grow with careful investments. Investments do need time to grow and there was plent of that (almost 20 years).

And right now the British £ is worth a lot more than the U.S. $ — so that might account for the higher $ amounts too.

FYI the bulk of Diana’s estate went to her sons, very little (in comparison) went to her godchildren or charities.

      • notasugarhere says:

Did Diana live at Kensington rent-free after the divorce? I have no idea, so It’d be great if somebody else has an answer. It wasn’t until a few years ago that the royal residents were made to pay market rate rents anyway, right?

LS, I think the estate was originally more generous to godchildren, but the executors changed it.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •notasugarhere•

Paying ‘rent’ for the various Royal apartments has changed over time. I say that because I could be wrong here (I’m pulling from memory and haven’t verified what I’m saying).

At one time, it was free for everyone (including staff) and then, as perception and budgets changed, it modified. I do think at the time of Diana and Charles’ divorce (the 90’s) that working Royals got their accommodations free of charge whereas HM paid the (nominal) rent on non-working Royals. Now, I do think everyone pays something but that is a more recent occurrence.

Yes, Diana’s will was MUCH more generous to her Godchildren and the trustees of her will, pretty much, screwed them all over. How the trustees were able to flagrantly disregard Diana’s will (even her added amendments) still stumps me. Shameful in my opinion, just shameful.

      • FLORC says:

        LadySlippers
Wasn’t that tragic. Diana’s wishes were completely set aside. The reasoning of hers was great too. William will be cared for well so Harry should get more. And her Godchildren won’t be as cared for as her children so they should get a bit more as well. The situation was extremely shameful!b

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Florc•

        I just reread your comment.

British law allows divorcées to keep their titles post divorce — even *after* remarriage. In effect, that law would establish precedence that still is followed today which would have no bearing on a cash settlement.

For super geeks like me, a peer challenged his ex-wife over her the use of her married title (First Name, Title) and lost in court. This was back in the beginning of the 20th century.

      • wolfpup says:

I believe that Diana wanted to keep her HRH status.

On another note, I highly doubt that anyone ever asked Diana to work more, or do more than gala’s. I smell “Willy entitlement” in operation. It’s a problem that looks like defiance and stubbornness. And/Or Charles’ is every bit as much as a self-indulgent chump as he was years ago (most likely). However, that still does not let Kate off of the hook.

(I want to use the words morons, but refrain).

      • LadySlippers says:

        •wolfpup•

Actually all the reports stated that Diana was looking to shed any and everything Royal in order to achieve her goal — a normal and happy family. She saw her Royal ‘trappings’ as a hindrance to that goal and only realized her mistake *after* the fact. Diana was also, very firmly by HM, put in her place (an extremely rate occurrence) after Diana leaked info about the negotiations.

        •Florc•

Tragic indeed. Diana adored many (if not all) her Godchildren.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Kate, no matter how much some try to rework and rewrite her history, is certainly NOT from titled gentry she’s COMMON. Period!

      Wolfpup you are Correct.
Diana was very upset about losing her HRH.
Just go back and read all the actual news coverage at the time.
Her brother touched on that in the funeral speech,as a bit of a smack to the Royal Fam, saying she had her own magic.
She was upset she lost her HRH.

  15. Artimis says:

The vitriol on this site for Kate is quite somethin’ ain’t it?

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Artimis•

Sadly, this pales in comparison to other sites I’ve been to. 😢

But there are people here (commonly known as Royal Loonies) that do know a lot about the BRF and comment. Whether people listen to us another matter.

    • FLORC says:

      Artimis
It’s hit and miss, but pretty calm considering other threads here and on other sites. That is vitriol. Not really this. Although there are a few commentors here that do take it too far.

Considering many of the comments so far are more rolling eyes at L&S or correcting other commentors on facts “vitriol” seems like overkill in its usage here.

    • bluhare says:

Don’t know about vitriol, but I’ll cosign on picky sometimes!

  16. Olenna says:

I’m calling B.S. I doubt the Queen said anything to or about Kate Middleton. William’s work ethic is only slightly better than Kate’s, and it doesn’t appear the Queen is concerned about his, let alone hers. Anyway, this HG tale is past its sell-by date. Despite what the PR team publicly stated, I think Kate had a bad bout of morning sickness, not HG. IMO, the woman looks as healthy and fit as a race horse. In fact, she looks healthier now than she did before she went into seclusion.

  17. blu says:

I’m not sure if it is effective against hyperemesis gravidarum, but there is medication for nausea during pregnancy. Maybe not an option with this condition?

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Blu•

It depends on the severity. And no matter what — not all medications work for people. Pregnancy limits those options even more.

      • Green Girl says:

I would think, too, that any doctor treating Kate would be even more cautious about prescribing medication during her pregnancy, thus limiting the options even more.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Green Girl•

I don’t think Kate’s medications would be much different than anyone else’s. True, they might recommend she stay off her feet more but plenty of women get that as well. So overall, I think no, not really.

    • K says:

In the UK you don’t get given medication at all for morning sickness unless it’s severe enough to be borderline HG, or full blown HG, because there is still paranoia after the Thalidomide mess. Stemetil is known to be safe, and it’s handed out almost as a matter of course in much of the world, but here you need to be pretty unwell before they let you have it.

Which is a longwinded way of saying HG sufferers are way more likely to be medicated, not less. But if the sickness is serious enough it can only take the edge off at best.

Did y’all see that Masako was out and about greeting Willem-Alexander and Maxima???

    Wahoo!

    • notasugarhere says:

I’ll second the cheers for Masako! And she wore orange in honor of her friend from the House of Orange. Those pictures clearly show how close Masako and Maxima are behind the scenes. The Imperial family wasted such an incredible resource when they caged Masako.

      • lolamd says:

Can you explain when you say they caged Masako? I dont know the story there.

      • notasugarhere says:

Masako is well-educated, a trained diplomat, and speaks multiple languages. Really perfect material for a modern royal consort, if modern and royal belong in the same sentence.

She was lambasted for speaking more words than her fiance at their engagement interview. At one of their first events, she was told off by the Imperial Household for speaking to her dinner partner in his native language (because she happened to speak it). She was told that is what interpreters are for, and she was perceived as “showing off” for being multilingual.

Basically they always wanted her to be a pretty and obedient doll, not the intelligent and skilled woman that she is. Add in the years of painful attempts to have a child and their daughter Aiko not being considered as valuable as a son.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •lolamd•

•notasugarhere• summed it up well. In Japan, women can be smart and successful until they marry. Then they are supposed to sacrifice all their goals for the betterment of their family.

I like Masako to and am disappointed that we won’t see an Empress Aiko. I hope I spelled her name correctly.

        Dena,
Compared to the other young royals of Europe, William is sadly undereducated and unexperienced in terms of what his future role required. Most, if not all, their heirs to the European thrones (as well as the new monarchs) have graduate degrees (often in political science), have studied abroad, speak several languages and have had diplomatic placements/”interships”.

    • ArtHistorian says:

It was great to see – and there’s also a strong friendship between them. The Imperial Household has officially stated that Maxima’s friendship with Masako has been effective in her ongoing recovery.

Maybe the situation has improved in the last few years, but I’m thinking there is still a long way to go.

I don’t think the Queen is telling Kate to do anything because it seems like she has absolutely no bargaining chip or any sort of power over W&K. I think if she really did have any complaints about W&K, she’d take it to Charles and wouldn’t deal with it herself. Then she’d just leave it there. She can only do so much and I think she knows that all she can do is do her own work to help support the image of the BRF and stay in the public’s good graces. She’s got enough problems of her own and she’s done enough to give herself a good legacy. I think she’s smart enough to know that she can’t do anything about a problem that’s 30 years into the future, which is probably how long it will be until William takes the throne.

I think what L&S wrote is what regular people are thinking. Replace “Queen” with “many amongst the public.”

I wonder how many times Kate has actually been in the Queen’s presence since marriage?

    • FLORC says:

      Someone
Kate has been at a few events with the Queen. Either as just another royal head like the jubilee or helping in an event like the meeting the actors (Mirren, BC, Former Doctor Who DT, etc).
And let’s not forget when Kate showed off the wedding display to the Queen and was asking if Faberge Eggs were still being made. That was also in the presence of the Queen. And let’s not forget lots of times after George was born. Line to the throne generation photos.
And those are just a few examples of what’s documented. Outside of that I’ll speculate Kate is at her parent’s home and the Queen is very busy with her schedule.

      • Vava says:

When she asked if Faberge eggs were still being made that was the moment in time when I began to wonder about Kate.

      • FLORC says:

        Vava
If she didn’t have that Art History degree I would have cut her some slack. Art is still being continued even when the originators have long past.
The eggs, like a Ming dynasty vase can still be made. They’re just not going to be a true Ming vase.

It’s a fair example Kate might not be good at thinking on her feet or lacks poor social skills. She must not have been at ease and struggled to say something interesting to not have thought the question through before it left her mouth.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

      • ArtHistorian says:

        Regarding the Faberge Eggs:

If one isn’t very knowledgable about the subject, it can be a bit difficult because many Faberge-like eggs are produced by various companies. However, it would be fairly easy to do some research on the original eggs and the ones in the Royal Collection as almost all of them are very well documented.

Either Kate didn’t bother to do some basic research or she just really sucks at small talk.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Any woman around William for 10yrs should have known about Faberge(even without a ArtHistory degree) just in relation to his family history.

I’d say a fair amount. There are a number of Royal events they’ve both attended (which •Florc• mentioned), plus the family events were hear about but don’t see. And to add to that, there will be times they meet that we the public don’t have a clue about.

Anne is currently in Africa and has already been to Australia. She is due (soon) to go to the U.S. and Canada as well but not sure it’s part of this trip or a separate trip. (It appears it’s all part of one trip)

Grrrr. My phone’s not letting me post links.

I have that issue too. When i’m on my phone links never get by.

Today is the first day I’ve experienced it. 😯 And I’m not liking it.

Apparently, Charles made a lovely speech today and donated a ‘substantial’ amount to the charity that will support the families of the slain Canadian soldiers.

The Queen who has a remarkable work ethic IMO does not speak to L&S. So yeah, there’s that.

I don’t believe for one moment the Queen has been bullying Kate but I do believe she has let it be known that it’s time Wills and Kate started towing the Royal appearance line.

Not to excuse Kate her seemingly never ending ‘blow up’ events but Princess Anne has had a few of them also however never while on royal duty.

QEII rarely orders anyone around and even if she had, William would probably ignore it.

All the Royal women have had ‘Marilyn Moments’ themselves but they are few and far between which has been the difference with Kate. Hers have been very frequent and all within a span of 3 years.

I agree with you Flower. My understanding is the Queen very rarely actually says anything, but her staff will take care of it for her. And I imagine that those with whom she is displeased know. 🙂

When I had HG, I spent several months in hospital in IV drip. It was a life threatening condition which required constant monitoring, day and night, because both my life and my baby’s life was in danger. All I did was vomit, sleep, cry (and occasionally hallucinate when the dehydration was too much for my body to handle). I threw up dozens of times every day, mostly just bile because I couldn’t keep anything down, not even water or any other liquid. I was so weak I couldn’t even go to the bathroom on my own. I don’t think it would have been possible for me to go work at royal events even if the queen herself had tried to bully me into it. Not that I believe she does that kind of thing. Just saying, based on my personal experience, something about this just doesn’t ring true. But I guess each case of HG is different?

What a load of spiteful twaddle.

    • wolfpup says:

You call it spite – I call it well-thought out ideas and opinions, as to what could actually be the cause of the indifference that Will and Kate show for their positions in their government; especially when their jobs pay so well. At least we are able to say what we think here. Some of us are more cynical than others, so?

The funny thing about a certain paparazzi, is he has certain minions who he relays stuff to in social media.
There’s a recent humdinger on Carole.
She behaves downright trashy at times, if what the person said is true, that’s all I’ll say on that.

  29. Upshot says:

So Kate’s skeletal figure at 3+ months on now is the Queen’s fault? She was skeletal to within an inch of her emo life when she got knocked, er, pregnant.

Kate’s issues were there before she married William, although since then he has seemed to exacerbate some of her more glaring problems. I actually feel sorry for her in many ways; she simply has little to no control of her emotional health. She reminds me so much of Diana in this way. Pressures that one lays on oneself can be more destructive than any someone else could exert.

Kate is fragile; seems near breaking point more and more as time goes by. A once very healthy, athletic young woman has tuned into what she is today. Barely functional, imo. Sad.
A nervous twig seemingly always ready to snap anymore. Look at her face in the cover shot here. She is not well. And I’m on the “Nope, sorry” train re HG. She’s I’ll due to her existing ano issues.

Yet William can bleat until he is blue not just in the blood. His father’s son, more and more. He seems especially cruel and aloof the more needy she seems to become. Ugh.

The Queen deserve better. But I guess we all reap what we sow. These two seem especially weak minded.
