Thank God, finally there’s some news about Michael Fassbender. I’ve been going through Fass-withdrawals. I guess it’s good for Fassy that he can really and truly go dark, gossip-wise, when he wants to. It probably helps that he’s been in Australia New Zealand for the past few months working on The Light Between Oceans, an adaptation of one of our Book Club Selections (which all of us loathed). I can see Fassy in the role, but the story just sucks. Anyway, Fassy is looking for his next project and Variety says he may have found it in the long-gestating Steve Jobs bio-pic. This is the same film that cast Christian Bale in the lead role, but Bale jumped ship a week ago. So Fassy’s “in talks” now.
With Christian Bale parting ways on the project, Sony has moved quickly to find the man to portray the late Apple founder Steve Jobs. Michael Fassbender is in early talks to play “Jobs” in the the Sony biopic that Danny Boyle is directing, sources confirm.
Based on Walter Isaacson’s biography “Steve Jobs,” the real-life drama is directed by Danny Boyle and written by Aaron Sorkin. Seth Rogen is in talks to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Scott Rudin will produce along with Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady.
Sorkin has publicly said the movie will be divided into three long scenes, each taking place backstage before one of Apple’s famous product launches.
“The first one being the Mac,” he told the Daily Beast. “The second one being NeXT, after he had left Apple. And the third one being the iPod. It’s a little like writing about the Beatles. There are so many people out there that know him and revere him.”
Leonardo DiCaprio had been circling the role but eventually passed to take time off from acting. David Fincher had also been in talks at one point to direct. Sony acquired rights following the Apple mogul’s death in 2011. Fassbender is repped by CAA.
With Danny Boyle directing and Sorkin writing, it’s already a pretty prestigious-sounding film. No wonder Bale signed on. But I understand why Bale left too – Jobs was definitely a genius, but he was also an intemperate bastard to employees, collaborators and everyone else. So… maybe it wouldn’t have been an acting stretch for Bale. But Michael Fassbender? I don’t know. On a superficial level, Fassy doesn’t look anything like Jobs and they have radically different “vibes.” That being said, Fassy is an incredible actor and I could see him donning a black turtleneck and bringing some Steve Jobs Realness to the film.

Too sexy for Jobs, sorry.
Came to post the same. And Fassy should take more roles where he has a limited wardrobe. Like Shame and 300.
Seeing him in movies sparks me to think to myself “Take it off!”
I think he has the facial structure with a little tweeking of a young Jobs though.
Steve Jobs was kinda sexy, though. Kinda.
I think Bale would’ve been a better choice. Lusting after Steve Jobs is going to feel weird (after 12YAS I realized that whatever role Fassy plays, no matter how disgusting, I’m gonna be madly in love with him watching the movie).
But he is a great actor so maybe he’ll pull it off!
Interesting choice for him.
I don’t know why but I liked him better before he became famous. He’s a very good actor but…no. I started to watch Shame on the TV the other night, it got great reviews, but turned over after a few minutes of watching him walking around with his tackle out. BTW, if He who is newly engaged is often called “the Batch”, should Michael be “the Bender?”
I’m not very enthusiastic about the movie. But hey, an excuse to look at Fassy in the morning.
I could care less about the topic of this movie, and I’m not a fan of Sorkin’s scripts. I think I’ll pass.
I LOVE Fassbender, but I absolutely agree about very different vibes. He’s the last actor I’d have considered for Jobs’ role.
Same here. Hell no. And why do we need another Steve Jobs movie? Aren’t there any other famous people they can write movies about?
Totally. I mean, in my book he can possibly play anything and everything, but still… nope.
And as I’m absolutely not inclined to watch any Steve Jobs movie (sorry, his death was of course a tragedy, but he’s still not interesting to me), but would suffer through it for Fassbender I really hope this will never happen. Not even if it would be a Steve-Jobs-is-mostly-naked movie. And lusting after “Steve Jobs” would be too weird anyway.
This movie won’t be very interesting. Just Sorkin writing about another rich white a-hole who treated people like crap.
(Jobs was a genius and created almost all the tech products I use, but still, an a-hole who treated people like crap).
I’m really sorry to be “that person” but I think you misspelled New Zealand as Australia ;)(we’ve been having such stellar hard hitting print and tv reports such as “Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz eat lunch! Rachel had the salad” and “Michael Fassbender has a drink” while they’ve been filming… :s )
My bad! I thought they were filming in Australia because that’s where the book is set.
All good 🙂 I think we only managed to get it here because of good tax breaks!!
I’ve never been impressed by his American accent. He has trouble hiding his own accent in some of his movies in my opinion.
To true. Lord, I love that man, but still to this day when I think of his accent f*ck up in X-Men (‘Brudders and sisturs!’) I crack up. His accent didn’t just come through, it was the flattest, ugliest accent during Magneto’s climactic speech.
I’m not just Irish, I’m RURAL Irish, the accents are incomprehensible for even a native at times and even by my standards that accent foul up was bad!
Accents are not his thing, lol.
I know he’s an apple enthusiast pero yo no creo.
I’m tired of Jobs and he can do better.
Hmmm. With Bale and DiCaprio both passing, I’m wondering what’s up. I’m all conspiratorial this morning.
I’ll start to worry when it gets passed to Kellan Lutz.
Hah! If it has Kellan Lutz as Steve Jobs reading a tech manual whilst sitting in a tree, I would totally be in for a slightly sozzled hate watch with several of my snarkiest friends 😁
LOL the Lutz would never. The Lutz does not take Bale/DiCapriho leftovers. The Lutz is above this. I had a straight face while I was typing this, I swear.
I like your style, Kali!
My guess is that they wouldn’t want to be forever compared to Ashton Kutcher.
The glimpses at Hollywood heiarchy are facinating. So for prestige roles in the 35-45 age range it’s Bale and DiCaprio (in varying order, although since Leo likes producing he’s usually involved first), then Fassbender, then Tom Hardy maybe? Cumberbatch seems to now be up there, depending on the type of role. I still don’t know where McConnaughy fits now.
Then Kellan Lutz of course, Kellan Lutz told me so. 😉
Why did Bale quit? I was super psyched to see him as Jobs now I’vf got the sads.
It’s interesting but apparently he didn’t quit. He hadn’t even started talks for the role. Sorkin and the Hollywood Reporter jumped the gun badly.
I love me some fassy but i cannot see this at all
Like it’s difficult to top Kelso’s Steve Jobs. Put James Franco or Channing Taters as Jobs, no one will care now. Every guy in Hollywood is now qualified to play Steve.
too bad Bale quit. He was perfect as Jobs. Fassy? No no no.
… maybe it wouldn’t have been an acting stretch for Bale. — This is hilarious!
Michael looks good in a turtleneck. He wore one in X-Men DOFP. I think he could do it. And if he did an amazing job more people would know him.
It’s weird that in Hollywood everyone knows who he is but I still come across people that have never heard of him. But I think by now a great part of the people in the U.S. have owned an Apple product. This could be really good for him if it came to pass.
Yay! a new Fassy post! I hate the droughts. I’m glad he’s able to go off the grid as far as the tabs/paps go but I’m greedy and hate the droughts, lol.
I think he can do the job as Jobs. He’s good with the cold, calculating characters and it sounds like that was Jobs. He’ll also find little ways to humanize the guy. If he could humanize the android in Prometheus, he should be able to humanize Jobs while still showing what a jackass he was.
For a little gossip…he’s been seen out with his costar Alicia Vikander during filming. Sometimes with other cast/crew, sometimes alone. Kali, have you seen or heard anything?
Totally plausible that he’s just out drinking and/or dining with a costar, nothing more. But given his history with female costars….especially young, pretty ones, lol.
I’m based at the other end of the country to where they’re filming but will investigate. N.Z is vv small. Any form of media in N.Z is basically equivalent to the Duggar family. Gossip will out, most definitely 😉
Cool! Thanks Kali! 🙂
My sister is on the shoots, away filming today even, lots of the family are extras as they are filming down the road. Alicia is a lot younger than him. I don’t buy it. He seems too smart / mature for that. Disclaimer: I have no idea, pure speculation.
Alicia is “only” 11 years younger. Sure, it’s an age gap, but not a really creepy one and rather common with actors. And wow, she’s beautiful. So while I have absolutely no idea if anything is going I’d say good for him. And her of course! 😉
Yeah, he had something with Zoe Kravitz for a while so don’t give the guy too much credit 😉
Fass can do anything so I think he’d be great in this role. I wish he hadn’t dropped out of “Genius” though. That looks like it’s going to be a really interesting film with a great cast, and I’d loved to have seen Fassy in that movie too.
Truly, I don’t understand why this movie is happening. Everyone knows all they need to know about the guy, and one movie already flopped. This seems like a desperate attempt to create The Social Network 2.
I like this, Fassbender should take the role. I think he can pull of the look of Jobs and portray him indepth. A well know director, writer and character…….he needs a film like this. But then again he may not be able to do it because of his schedule.
The Fass = Miscast.
Why do you think he = miscast?
I think that Michael could play the role easily, but this is not a role that he should be rushed into. If they want this film to be out in a year – than Fassbender should turn it down and wait for something else to come along. This project (because it has been done before and was a big flop) should take quite a bit of prep time if they want it done right the second time around.
I don’t see it. Plus, like it has been commented, this has been done before with little if no success.
