Yay, Tom Hiddleston news. These are photos of Tommy Hiddleston at the London Evening Standard Awards in 2012 and 2013. I have every reason to believe he’ll attend this year’s ceremony on November 30th because this year, Tommy was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse earlier this year. I’m not incredibly familiar with the levels of awesomeness for British theater awards and how they would compare to American theater awards, but from what I gather, the Evening Standard Awards are lower than the Oliviers but still relatively prestigious.
Tom Hiddleston has been nominated for the best actor prize at Britain’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his role in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus. The Thor actor starred as the titular Roman leader in the production at the Donmar Warehouse in London in December (13) and he has now landed a top nod for the part.
He will compete against Zero Dark Thirty actor Mark Strong, who is nominated for his role in Arthur Miller’s play A View from the Bridge, and V for Vendetta actor Ben Miles, who starred in Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies – a double bill stage adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s two novels.
Gillian Anderson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Harry Potter star Helen MCCrory and singer-turned-actress Billie Piper will battle it out for the best actress prize.
Billy Elliott film maker Stephen Daldry is nominated for best direction for Skylight, and Sunny Afternoon, the new production telling the story of The Kinks, is in the running for best musical. The winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon at the London Palladium on 30 November (14).
So, will Hiddleston show up? Will I Saw the Light be finished by then? It’s such a small film, I kind of assumed that the film schedule would be pretty tight. I think if Hiddles is still filming in Louisiana, he probably won’t fly to London just for this theater awards show. But if he’s done… maybe. That’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving too. Will Tommy still be in America for Thanksgiving?! He can come to my mom’s house if he wants to eat some turkey, Virginia ham, made-from-scratch mashed potatoes and some Southern-style corn. Damn… now I kind of want Tommy to come over for Thanksgiving and play with my mom’s cats. I bet that would be adorable.

I remember years ago going to my future sister-in-law’s for Thanksgiving. I’d met my future father-in-law before I met her and he’d said oh “Chrissy” (not her real name) is a gourmet cook. Well, she served instant mashed potatoes. Disgusting, absolutely disgusting.
On the other hand my son makes the best garlic, gruyere, mashed potatoes they are to die for (with real actual potatoes). Can’t wait for next Thursday.

Yes: Evening Standard Awards are prominent. I think Tommy will go but I also think the Wolf Hall productions have enough momentum (that whole dual thing is playing very well) for Ben Miles to be the shoe-in for the win.
They have been staged more recently, haven’t they? Sometimes being fresh in the mind is a factor too. Although that doesn’t seem to have helped Simon Russel Beale this go-round.

I saw Mark and it was a great performance but just not sure it was dynamic enough.
I think all the “non-luvvie” attention is on Wolf Hall, you know? And for the middle brow awards, such as these, I think that’s where the prizes will go. I’m always up for being wrong, however! And, let’s face it, with the Oliviers having gone tabloid, who knows?! I only saw WH, btw. But I have made big efforts to see stuff this year.

In additional ISTL news, Rodney Crowell has been cast as Hank Williams’s father. Presumably it will be a small role because the father wasn’t around much but it is nice that Rodney gets to be in the movie after all the work he has done.
Cherry Jones, who has won a fair share of theater awards in her own career, is playing Hank’s mother.

Good for him: he’s capturing the charisma that was Hank Williams, the man whom Bob Hope swore not to follow on stage ever again.
I was really impressed with Cherry Jones in 24, I remember watching her and thinking she’s a bit good for this. :-p
‘P’enny, she has done lots and lots of theater work. I think she may have one or two Tony awards. She has done lots of work in the Boston area at Amercan Repertory Theater. She’s a force. And she has done Shakespeare so lots to chat about with Tom.
Dad disappeared when Hank was a wee boy so yes it is a very small part unless he came back to haunt him in later life.
They did reconnect several times when Hank was an adult.
What I find especially cool about Crowell being cast as Hank’s dad is that there has been this vaguely father/son chemistry between the two of them since at least Wheatland (IMO.). As Rodney has only daughters, perhaps he is enjoying a temporary son to mentor. (And why the daughters might be eager to embrace a brother!)
I Saw The Light is shooting til mid December apparently so doubtful he’ll be there.
He did get time off during Crimson Peak filming for the Oliviers. Some actors have leave time for potential awards written into their film contracts. The ceremony is also Thanksgiving weekend, so he may have a short break then any way. The problem might be if he doesn’t already have flights booked and if there are no direct flights to London from whichever airport he is near. Connecting flights in and out of US airports for that weekend are nearly impossible to book now.
He’d have to fly out of NOLA at minimum, possibly NOLA to Houston (nearest major hub with a direct flight to London Heathrow). If he’s planning on going, he’s either going to spend big on tickets right now, or had to have planned well in advance, just in case. (Swear I’m not stalky lol–I lived in Louisiana for years and live in SE Texas now so have a sadly intimate knowledge of the airports and airlines and where they go out of those places).
MissMary, I don’t think air fare would be an issue for Thomas. Getting a flight to and from a hub airport would be. And if the trains in the south are anything like Amtrak’s northeast corridor, all trains that weekend to major cities would have been booked since early October.
There’s really no train system to speak of, at least in the part of the South he’s in. He’d need a driver or hop on the bus.
I’m not sure if I should hope that he attends or not. Because… pictures. Tux. Voice. Yum. But on the other hand it sounds super stressful. It seems he is working really hard on ISTL and then all the transatlantic flights… It’s a bit much for poor Tommy boy.
For Olivier, he has a month and a half to get Crimson Peak to adjust the schedule if adjustment is needed to get him free to travel back for that monday. This one he has 10 days notice to ask for that monday off, and arrange travelling at the busiest traveling week of the entire year. I don’t know if he can make it even if he wants to.
Hmm – so the boss told me this morning he has to do a London-Paris-Rome blitzkrieg in January and I’ve spent the morning buried in transatlantic flight schedules. In the interest of calculating odds for the wager I have with ‘P’enny, at one point I may have “accidentally” selected November dates instead of the actual ones and then “accidentally” selected the wrong outbound airport. All of that to say I found a lovely set of flights for TH that have seats available in First Class (price isn’t bad either, all things considered). Not stalking – just doing my part to facilitate a Tuxedo Tom sighting before the end of the year.
*Dear Tom, do have your cracker-jack assistant give me a ring if they need flight numbers, etc.* Oh, and the connecting airport has a restaurant in the international terminal that does a killer burger.

@FW I am not sure id it was just for publicity why not include Richard Armitage or Bill Nighy as there is a definite shortage of actor nominees, The panel is made up of newspaper critics who would have seen all the performances and most of them gave Tom a brilliant review
Jude Law may have fallen into 2013 -I think it depends on when you opened the run and what percentage of performances were in each year but I will check on it

Turns out, my coworker’s sister lives in a neighborhood where they filmed when they did the local news coverage. Sadly she wasn’t a fan and hated the noise. I wanted to be in her place right at that moment, only I live in New Orleans.

A guy on FB has been posting updates of his time on set but CAREFULLY within the parameters of set rules.

It looks like the woman who posted the pic (which her son shot) took it down. I guess the outraged Hiddlestoners scared her off. She must have also posted the full-length shot showing Tom’s boots as that’s floating around now.

I doubt it was outraged Hiddlestoners, as all her feedback was very positive.
Suspect it was her son telling her he had been threatened with legal action by the production (as that is in the contract extras sign when hired.)
@Totally – I love that Tom was a good host’ for those extras. There was a great interview with another actor where he talked about when he was No. 1 on the call sheet he felt responsible for making sure everyone else not only had what they needed to deliver a good performance but also had ‘fun at the office’. It warms my heart to see Tom following that example. If the main guy (who has a bigger job than anyone else) is full of positive energy, then there is no excuse for diva behavior from anyone.

I really don’t think the production company would bother with one picture, especially as it’s all over the internet now. It would be kind of like trying to clean up an oil spill with a roll of paper towels. I *have* seen the more rabid fans policing the distribution of the picture, as if it does any good now.

Granted, I think I’ve put my money on the long shot. Minimum 12-14 hour trip (and that’s being optimistic) with at least one connection, during the craziest travel weekend in the States. Although he could fly out Thursday morning – he’s English, what does he care of Pilgrims.

@Dara true. Maybe it is just actors from 2nd place public schools and our Eton actors are just to well trained to give into red carpet stomping and privacy pitfalls. Eddie ,Dominic West ,Hugh Laurie ,Damian Lewis all seem to be able to manage thriving acting careers and loving wives although Dominic has had his moments.
My personal feeling is that most actor-ly folk are probably high-strung, insecure, neurotic perfectionists most of the time, it’s just that some are better able to compensate than others. Given the givens of their chosen profession (and the personality types that are attracted to it), I’m surprised when any of them can manage what passes for a ‘normal’ personal life.
Don’t get me wrong, I love ’em all – but I don’t understand what drives them to do what they do. I wouldn’t want to be one or be in a relationship with one.

I’ve been taking a slow IV drip of Hal the Machiavellian Prince the past few days and I am impressed with how user-friendly TH makes archaic Shakespearean lines. I found I didn’t have to listen as “hard” to get the gist of what he was saying.

Unfortunately, no. They have a principle regarding live theatre only seen in a theatre with an audience sharing your experience. And no pausing to go get another mimosa or absinthe!!
That said, it was an astonishing experience to watch Coriolanus here in the States.
We can only hope that, like ‘the other guy’s’ Frankenstein, it comes around again as an encore. I would see it again and again!

Watch ‘Muse of Fire’ his two interviews – I know I’ve gone on about this. But man, seriously I was impressed. Lots of people love what they do but they can’t/don’t put their love into words. He is rather extraordinary in breaking things down for people to understand, and that ability he has belies his years. The depth of his understanding and his dedication show in those interviews, which also goes to show that there is no accidental success. Well, at least not sustainable success.

Coriolanus got broadcast in Philippines in September or October. The fans gathered together to watch it the theater, and I can tell for the pics that I saw on twitter, it was such event. I think Mexico got it too and I just saw a ticket from S. Korea.

High-Rise earliest possible is Cannes in May, I fear it will be OLLA once again, have to wait for 1 whole year after Cannes before it gets release in US. Crimson Peak is Oct, ISTL is probably last month of the year in very limited release. Tom is worth the way, but damnit, must we have to wait for everything?

But places like the RSC and the Globe do sell some as DVD’S.
There are also digital sights where you can download west end plays as well. I have seen Tennant’s and Catherine Tate’s Much Ado About Nothing which started at the Donmar , I think and was suppose to be very good.

He had had back to me and the lights were shining on him giving me a beautifully view of those longs legs and tight little behind. I did struggle against the distraction but in Hiddle’s force was great that night and in the end fighting was useless

A.R.T. is the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University. It’s production of “Finding Neverland”, which is lovely, is headed to Broadway, courtesy of Harvey Weinstein, as the recent version of Porgy & Bess with Audra McDonald and Brian Cranston’s play about LBJ did before it. It tends a bit on the more avant garde side. Cherry Jones was a regular for years and Julie Taymor got her start there.
The main theater itself has a rather intimate feel to it. You aren’t that far from the stage and if you are in the front, you may find one of the performers walking over you. It also has a cabaret theater a few blocks away, which features even more experimental stuff and a long-running production called “The Donkey Show”, which is actually a cabaret version of “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Actors love the place.
Tom always looks adorable, especially dressed up as Hank Williams. Originally my biggest interest was High Rise, but now I’m looking forward to watching I Saw the Light.
@Camil – I was kind of ‘meh’ at the idea of Hank, his lyrics are awesome but I just cannot deal with his singing voice, especially the yodeling. Was it someone here that said something similar about Bob Dylan and his voice vs. lyrics? I like that comparison, btw. Lately though, ISTL is neck and neck with Crimson Peak on my watch list. High Rise is trailing for me – which could be a good thing, might be a long shot to get US distribution so I’ll be less crushed if I don’t get to see it.
I still can’t quite believe it’s almost a year until Crimson Peak is released – could I humbly suggest Valentine’s Day might have been an awesome date given its rumored storyline… then again, we’d miss a chance for another SDCC Hall H (for Hiddleston) moment from Tom if it were released before the fall.
He does have the ability to dive into whatever project and make the utmost of it. I haven’t seen anything he’s in that I don’t like… It’s the can-do attitude showing, I think. Having said that, I have difficulties with Joanna Hogg’s films. They are so quiet… and in a bland and blah kind of way. I know that’s her ‘distinctive’ style or something. But to me they’re just… bland and blah.
Said it before, will say it again, I really really like all the Hogg films and not just cos Tom’s in them , tho that’s always an added bonus…
@Anne tommy, somehow her films just don’t speak to me. I am not sure it’s the story, or her style of film-making, or a bit of both. Of course what doesn’t work for me could very well be another person’s cup of tea. Maybe one day she will make something I like and I will happily change my mind.
Speaking of films, I do have a major case of worry about Crimson Peak since I’ve never been able to enjoy Guillermo del Toro’s films. But I think I shall reserve my judgement until the trailer comes out.
@AnneTommy, have you seen “Caprice”, her student film? It is included on the “Exhibition” Blu ray and stars a very young “Matilda Swintpn” who gets pulled into a fashion magazine. It’s a bit rough but I love it.

Tom’s charm is undeniable. I love that he’s so down to earth, and he is always very friendly with the extras. He is probly also try to whip up the spirit to help the scene. Those with 400 extras, concert scenes, suppose everyone should be in high festive spirit. Extras sitting around for hours being bored, Tom helps to get them in festive mood. He’ll make a good director someday.

All kinds of yes to that! Can we talk about how he Hiddlestones EVERY SINGLE PERSON HE MEETS!?! From Rodney Crowell and his daughters (and possibly even ex Roseanne Cash) to the Shreveport newsanchor to random guys met in uber-cool independent coffee shops. The South evidently LOVES him–as long as they meet him in person!
He must have live charisma up the wazoo. I remember reading about some fans who met him and could only stutter about how much MORE beautiful he was in person. That they hadn’t expected it, and were having trouble dealing with it. Mind you, these weren’t the wacko teens. These were grown women (and a guy) who expected to remain quite professional in their interactions.
Sometimes I think he can’t help himself–he just HAS to charm people, to play with them, to bask in attention while reminding them that “he’s just a man.”
SO I HAVE A NEW THEORY!!!
His director on I Saw The Light is one heck of a smart cookie. He’s watched Tom over the last two years, seen the vids of how he interacts with fans, and (I think) even went up to either the CP or HighRise shoots. SOOO. This director figures out if he keeps the set tightly closed, keeps Tom from having those fan interactions–THEN when he shoots concert scenes or other places where Hank is supposed to be exhibiting HIS famous charisma, especially if he surrounds Tom with hundreds of extras, TOM will light up like a Roman Candle from the energy pouring at him.
Thus all the Energizer Bunny comparisons on set these days.
I think this director might just be brilliant.
Okay, slap me because I am bringing up Muse of Fire again. The two guys who interviewed him, I could tell they adored him. I think he just brings that reaction out of people. I know he often gets criticised for people pleasing. But isn’t it nice someone makes you laugh and thinks about good things?
Now imagine someone asks him about mooning on set when he does press tour for ISTL. I think he will throw his head back and laugh.
Seems like EVERYONE who interacts with him for more than five minutes adores him. At least until the spell wears off? Ha.
And you can tell that Josh horowitz and guy from Empire magazine feel the same about Tom.

“All wrapped!
My part in I Saw the Light (as miniscule as it was) is done. It was a complete blast and a privilege to watch Tom. What I wanted from this was to be able to compare: having seen him live on stage in Coriolanus, would he have the same intensity for film acting? Answer is yes. Tonight we did something different than we did last night and he was completely focused and in the zone, whereas the night before he was still focused, but the energy was looser. I won’t go into detail because they want us to keep wraps on the scenes we filmed but I will say it was a true privilege to have participated in this. It was a kick ass experience, and this movie is going to be brilliant.
What I can say: I loved him before, and I love him a million times more now. He went out of his way to be amazing to the extras, educated us on Cockney rhyming slang in between takes (in a Cockney accent), started a treatise on how English accents are different than they were 100 years ago, and told us jokes while we waited. This was seriously so fun. I met a bunch of awesome people and got paid to be in the same room with Tom. 💚 I’m sorry, y’all, I wish I could be more specific but I can’t.”
That person was paid good money to listen to T Hiddy play music, crack jokes, and discuss linguistics.
I am OFFICIALLY beyond jealous. He let the Dancing Bear out to play just a little, I’ll bet!

@ellesbells, I too jumped on the Tommy Train in the past few months and I’m working through Hollow Crown and second TotallyBiased’s recommendation. Tom is wonderful as Prince Hal / Henry V. He really lights up the screen and steals the show.
I also recommend Only Lovers Left Alive. Don’t be turned off by it being about Vampires. It’s really about a loving relationship between a married couple and the chemistry between Tom and Tilda is amazing. The dancing scene will put a big smile on your face. Promise.
I’ve got Return to Cranford up next followed by Midnight in Paris. Thankfully, my local library has a pretty decent BBC selection! Wallander is on Netflix and I’ve got that in the queue as well.

I hadn’t seen her in anything till this, and I loved her, loved both characters. Tom is unrecognizable in this, although I think a sneaky smile starts to emerge in the dance scene and he hides it in Tilda’s arm. He had to be very serious, no smiling because Adam is such a sad git, she said he was very ‘lower lip out’ about it, LOL. Pouty face. Reading about her I think we’d be good friends, she’s a garden trollop like me and very down to earth. Seems lovely.

@ellesbelles – I’ll add my two cents for Warhorse, especially if there are behind the scenes features on a DVD/Blu-ray version. Not much screen time, but he makes the most of it. Brace yourself if you are an animal lover – pretty brutal in spots but Spielberg never disappoints.
@MR – enjoy Wallander. I know Ken Branagh was the lead, but I kept wishing for a Magnus-centered story line. All of the supporting characters needed more to do IMO. And it’s probably the last time Tom’s hair was even close to its original color and curl. I’ve got to track down Return to Cranford – I’m a sucker for a good English period piece.
I can’t bring myself to watch anything but the clips – first time a horse hits the ground I would run screaming out of the room, can’t take it. Tommy’s 8 year old face when he sees what’s waiting for him kills me, can’t watch that aftermath either.

@ellesbelles btw, speaking of how Tom treats extras, you may have heard that he hosted the Cleveland wrap party for Avengers at House of Blues and that it was evidently LEGENDARY! Extras were totally encouraged to go (which isn’t true of all wrap parties, believe you me) and even months later at NYCC a girl stood up at the Avengers panel to thank Tom for “taking such good care of the extras.”
If you google invitation, Avengers wrap party, Loki, you might be able to find a pdf of the invite—it’s really quite sweet how he phrased it!
That was suitably and predictably adorable. No wonder everyone he meets just loves him.

Seeing that I’ve gone on about a lot of things, lol, I won’t repeat myself. Just out of curiosity and possibly throwing in a less popular choice into the mix, I quite liked ‘Deep blue sea’. I admit it’s not the easiest film to watch, at times you might have to cover your mouth in shock, the ending seemed a little forced and out of tune with the entire film. But the cinematography is beautiful, and I really loved some of the dialogues. Anyone with me on that one?

Couldn’t agree with you more regarding Deep Blue Sea, especially where that ending is concerned. The truth is, I had a LOT more sympathy for the Freddie character than for Hester. Really couldn’t stand her manipulation and emotional dishonesty, even though it was possibly initiated by her depression. Hope that isn’ttoo much of a spoiler!
Anyway, great cast and compelling movie. Plus Tom. LOTS of lovely Tom.

The points you brought up about her emotional dishonesty and manipulation are very interesting to me because I’ve read some review online and people seem to find her unsympathetic by large. Some of it I do agree, that she’s obsessed with the idea of love , that she loves to love and the film is about the dying hours of a rather dire relationship. I guess what you said kind of put it in a clearer perspective for me. I can see now why she’s so disliked.
As for me, I feel sorry for her because I found it interesting why she was unable to step away from a falling relationship even though she was not completely fault-free in how it came to be so disastrous. The scene outside the pub was brutal, and also brutally honest. I saw a woman who was desperately in need of help but she wasn’t ready to help herself yet. In a way I like to think that she doesn’t want to be crying and begging either but she just doesn’t know what else to do, which is all kinds of sad in itself because she shouldn’t be going through all of that in her 40s. She should have learned her lessons earlier on in life and know not to let things get that far. Her actions are not sensible; her reasoning is very flawed, at an ugly moment of her life, and I thought the film caught the moment beautifully, if not hard to swallow.
Freddie is also flawed but strangely we understand him better than Hester. He has some very solid lines. I think that’s the reason we sympathise with him. Also Tom’s performance helped a lot. Kind of can’t hate him when he’s looking all sad and remorseful. 🙂
I should point out that I consider her JUST as emotionally dishonest to HERSELF as to anyone else.
And perhaps I can better understand why Freddie protects his internal damage by exaggerating the more jerkish aspects of his personality.
I kinda wanted to drop kick Hester out the front door and take Freddie for myself. He was hot but there was no FUN in her dysfunction.
But that may just be my issues, I suppose.

There’s also an actor (I guess he is an actor rather than an extra since he has a IMDB profile) who said behind the scene stories are rarely true, so he kinda annoyed that some are telling them. He specifically said Tom didn’t moon anyone. He said the only truth is that Tom is really an amazing actor and a gentleman.

Easy to forget you have it on esp if you’re just getting out of costume. Looks like he’s wrapping for the day in that pic. And trust–if he’d gotten married, even if he didn’t say anything because he does know how to be private, someone would’ve blabbed from the registry office (and besides: critical thinking moment–he’s in Louisiana. He can’t marry there. He’s not a US citizen. Well, unless he married a woman from the States… Oh, damn, I just started a new rumor).

I just checked my ebay and see that my Hollow Crown DVDs are out for delivery, meaning they will be there by the time I get home. Ugh, I must resist binge watching. I know I’ll watch some, but I get up every morning at 430 and I NEED sleep.
I was trying to explain to a very patient friend why I like Tom so much so suddenly, considering I JUST made her sit through my dissertation on the Otter. And beyond acting talent, which is a given, its the damn smile. Its effortless and genuine every. damn. time.
One of my favourite things about him is how he talks with his hands, smiles with his whole face, and shines with a light all his own. Well, three of my favourite things about him 🙂
I binged many a clip on youtube and I agree about the hands. The passion for Shakespeare doesn’t hurt either 😀

I personally choose to overlook all of his identified faults, because he doesn’t act like a prick. He’s just a bit clueless and over-eager for attention. My kids are the same way and I still love them to bits. 🙂
@MtnR Oh I dont doubt lol. The thing is, his over eagerness doesn’t taste sour, like our dear Bennys does. I dont know if its true, but the appearance given is that it doesnt matter if its interview one or interview 50, Tom looks like hes genuinely pleased to be talking to someone, no matter how awkward the questions are going. And I haven’t gotten the vibe that hes pandering to fans while insulting their emotions… like Ben has done a few times.

I get goosebumps at the Harfleur speech…cry at all the famous monologues…and can’t stop giggling when he woos Kate. Goiing back to his Prince Hal, the “sun” speech floors me *every* single time! Plus his interactions with Jeremy Irons. Scenery chewing transforms into emotional tapestry weaving.
I found that funny, “Hey, we won the battle, and by the way, leave me your daughter” “Kate, I love thee….” But we just met…….
“…whose face is not worth sunburning”……said no one, ever.
I just finished Henry V. I get it. I soooo get it. I was in tears at the end, especially the proposal. I’m not sure how I feel at the moment. Kind of strung out. If I could say anything to him, it would be thank you for such an achingly beautiful performance. I don’t even know what is happening right now.

That battle scene nearly had me in tears – seeing all the French troops ride up in all their shining glory and seeing the rag tag army he had to fight with, it seemed inevitable that i would be a slaughter. Very emotional and on the edge of my seat through that one. What a great series. I think Cumby may well be a disappointment after this.
I still, despite the recent twattery, get the squishies for Otter. Im willing to give him the benefit because his tone and delivery are completely different.

After watching HC, I’d say that the STORY of Henry V was more engaging than the other two plays and yes, I got goosebumps during the speeches before each battle BUT, Tom’s acting engaged me more in Henry IV. Someone commented previously that they thought that Jeremy and Simon raised Tom’s game in that play and I tend to agree. His portrayal of rowdy Prince Hal was even more believable to me than Henry V.
What I loved most about his Prince Hal was how he made Elizabethan language sound so modern and normal because he doesn’t go over the top with his diction, facial expressions and physical movements. So many actors do Shakepeare that way and it’s distracting and unnatural to me. Tom delivered his lines and expressed himself in a more conversational manner to me. One of brief moments I was struck by this is when Henry IV has summoned him to court, and he’s about to get a tongue-lashing. There’s a moment when he simply looks up at the ceiling as he braces himself. No heavy sighs, no pfft-ing, just a look up at the ceiling said it all. His minimalist approach to his portrayal of Hal really stood out to me.
Like a lot of actors, I think Tom struggles with showing anger without overdoing it. He does broody well (Adam in OLLA) along with naughty, romantic, sorrowful (his tears while sitting on the throne, thinking his dad was dead really got me) but angry is harder for me to believe. So that was the only distraction for me in Henry V, but still enjoyed it immensely.
I’m crossing my fingers that Coriolanus will be run again the US theaters for an encore performance (as NTL did with BC’s Frankenstein recently) so I can see him in that. He got great reviews for his performance and I’m sad that he wasn’t on my radar when it came through here earlier this year.
MtnR I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that Coriolanus comes back through, AND is shown somewhere relatively close to me. I’ve seen the snips and clips on the internet but I’d love to see the whole thing, especially because Mark Gatiss is in it as well.
I could spend all day dissecting Henry V. The proposal scene was my favorite, naturally, because it was so romantic yet shy and awkward.
I told a friend last night via text, my first exposure to Shakespeare was in first grade, seeing The Tempest, and then grudgingly reciting bits of Juliet with an equally begrudging male classmate playing Romeo in 7th grade. Seeing it now as a 33 year old adult, with the added benefit of Tom was absolute joy. It felt like running into an old friend and it becoming new.

The Hiddle-High is so worth it. I may lift my self imposed Woody Allen ban to see Midnight in Paris. I really try not to support Allens work. The hiddle-high may make it worthwhile though.
If you’re in the states (not sure it works elsewhere), you might want to check out a show that PBS did when they first broadcast the Hollow Crown. There’s not a lot of Tom, but there are some lovely on-set moments and some interview snippets. Oh, and Jeremy Irons gets to hold forth as only he can as he narrates/hosts the show. It looks similar to the features on the Hollow Crown DVD, but it’s different footage.

I am dying to see Coriolanus, I don’t think it was in wide release here – not enough for me to have seen it. I can barely cope with the “Tom Prepares for Coriolanus” video, though, a whole couple of hours of musclebound angry Tom could be devastating. But I’d go anyway…….
I could talk (gush really) about Shakespeare (and Tom) until the end of time. I’m Sometimes I think pushing the bard on school children in a classroom is a waste of time. IMO you have to see the plays performed (by people who know how) in order to really understand and enjoy it. That’s why I enjoy watching Tom – he obviously ‘gets it’ and tries hard to make sure the audience is along for the ride.
The first time we read Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo & Juliet in school the teacher spent half the time shushing the kids that were tittering at the jokes and innuendo (me included). Heck – the jokes and innuendo are half the point of the thing. You should be snickering.

@ellesbelles – I’m glad I can contribute to your Hiddle-High! It was the Hollow Crown that made me surrender my heart to Hiddles. If it hadn’t been for his talent with Shakespeare I would probably be vaguely indifferent to the guy. Coriolanus was amazing on screen – I can only imagine what it was like live and in person. God help me if he ever does Shakespeare on stage in London again. I’m rather fond of both of my kidneys, but I’d consider selling one for airfare, hotel and front row tickets.

There is something very satisfying and definite about Coriolanus’s death at the end of the play. Everything that he is goes with him. Equally, at the end of the play, he experiences compassion and it is very therapeutic to be able to finally yield to something soft and vulnerable.

@OH it wont let me link here but if you google youtube to mp3 converter, the first link is the one i use. you just paste the url of the youtube video in and click go, or convert or whatever the button says. it takes a few mins depending on the size of the file. I just haven’t had time to sit down and convert all of the poetry readings to mp3 files. The file usually ends up in your downloads folder on your desktop

Grace, jammypants instructions worked for me, google Coriolanus, video, click on the link with chinese characters and the number 56. Both parts are there, comes up in youtube. He blows me away, amazing performance, Built Like A Brick Shithouse Tom is incredible.
