Independent Spirit Award nominations: Julianne, Tilda & no Tom Hiddleston?!

wenn20388469

Wow, the Independent Spirit Awards announced their nominations early! I forget if they’ve always announced the noms this early or if this is a new thing. [From E! News]

It’s interesting to see which films and which actors got recognized, and extrapoliating from that information. Like, JK Simmons was nominated for Whiplash, and many believe he’ll be a major contender for the Oscar too. Whiplash got several nominations… but nothing for Miles Teller. Because the world is a just place!!! Seriously, though – Miles’ performance in Whiplash was critically acclaimed, so it might have come down to the sheer fact that Miles is kind of a d-bag.

What else… indie people love all things Tilda Swinton, so of course they would recognize her performance as a vampire. But no love for Tom Hiddleston?! NOOOO!!!! It’s also great to see Tilda, Julianne and Jenny Slate on the Female Lead list and NO Jennifer Aniston. Poor Aniston. And yes, I think Julianne is going to probably win #AllTheAwards this year. It’s her year!

Lots of love for Birdman, no surprise there. I’m glad to see Emma Stone and Michael Keaton get recognition. I’m surprised to see so much love for Selma already, because barely anyone has seen that film yet. The cast hasn’t even started promoting it! And yes, lots of love for Boyhood. I still haven’t seen it but I really want to. I would love it if Ethan Hawke got another Oscar nomination this year.

  1. Froop says:

Very pleased to see Tilda get a nom!

  2. Luciana says:

No Kristen Stewart neither. I’m glad Marion is getting some recognition for her work in The Inmigrant. It was superb.

  3. paola says:

oh my.. If I had to pick between Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton I’d have a headache. I Love them both.

    • Tristan says:

Haha same here! Tilda already has an Oscar under her belt, and it way overdue that Juliane Moore got the recognition she deserves!

  4. COSquared says:

I’ll NEVER understand why women thirst over Cum & Hiddy. Ugh. I’m already starting get annoyed with this award season talk. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

  5. 'P'enny says:

Really chuffed for Tilda, I think she is one of the best actresses out there and I loved her in OLLA. Jim J has a nom for best screenplay, which I think is also brilliant. Although sounds like the script was rather a collaborative effort so, I think, the thanks needs to go to all the cast.

I loved OLLA all round, one my favs.

In regard to that baity-headline LOL, Tom’s character, Adam, wouldn’t have been really a character that would bring out the drama-baiting necessities for award consideration. The film was written around Tilda’s strong female character. But, Tom’s deliberated down-played quietness was a true contrast to Loki and his dry sarcasm was a delight through out the film.

    • Grace says:

Agreed. Without Eve, Adam’s moodiness and bitchiness would get boring really quickly.

      • MtnRunner says:

Yes to P’enny and Grace’s comments. Loved OLLA and thrilled to see it get some love at the Spirits.

Delighted to see JK Simmons get a nod for Whiplash as well. I wish Miles had been recogonized for his work, but I haven’t seen all of the other contenders yet to give an educated opinion there.

    • Lilacflowers says:

If Tilda wins, (unlikely over Julianne, but possible) there would be much thanking of Tom. That Tilda and JJ were both nominated for a film that came out so long ago and for which they did very little promotion this year (Tom did no promotion for it this year other than a telephone interview) when JJ has said that the Spirit Awards really aren’t indicative of independent film any more (possibly a dig at Harvey, who knows), says that the film must have really impressed the voters.

      • 'P'enny says:

I am surprised Hiddles didn’t attend the New York opening of OLLA, but he was tied up with Crimson Peak. Still Jim and Tilda took the American promo. And, to be fair to Hiddles he attended every Indie film festival talking about it – so think he did his best.

      • icerose says:

yes I love the fact that it picked up awards and respect in a quiet cumulative way.

One theory for The Imitation game shut out is that both now and in the past Harvey has fudged production costs of his films to get it in under the $20,000,000 legibility so the voters boycotted it.
Having said that I though the nominations were really interestin

      • 'P'enny says:

hW didn’t produce the film – I thought he just bought distribution rights.

      • icerose says:

P’enny yes your right but from what some film sights have said he plays around with production costs/budgets before he enters the film and he has done it before,
But maybe that is just an excuse some sights are using and the voters just did not like the film or Benny’s acting.

    • OhHey says:

I loved Tilda’s elegance as Eve, and I thought Tom was delightful as Adam, who I found to be very sympathetic, cynical, disappointed but not incapable of caring, loved his relationship with Eve and with Ian. It was a great character, period, wish he’d gotten some appreciation for it.

    • icerose says:

I loved OLLA and am just pleased it got two nods, I was not expecting Tom to get a nod because it was always going to be Tilda’s vehicle but Tom was a nice foil for her mother earth warmth and spirit.
One of the things I like about Tom is that he is quite happy for women like Tilda and Rachael Weiss to be the dominant focus while he plays the weaker/flawed character

    • Isadora says:

I totally agree. OLLA is mostly JJ and Tilda and although Tom did a marvellous job with Adam (and I totally love that character) I didn’t think he would be nominated for awards. I also think it’s unlikely that Tilda will win over Julianne Moore and I doubt it has a real shot for best screenplay, it’s nice to see some recognition!

    • PunkyMomma says:

I’m so thrilled Tilda received a nod. Disappointed that Hiddles didn’t receive recognition. One of my fave movies of the year.

  6. COSquared says:

Tilda reminds me of a bantam.

  7. Sixer says:

    Woohoo! David Oyelowo!

  8. Allison says:

Yay for Jakey G! He nailed that role in Nightcrawler.

    • A. Key says:

Totally agree. I haven’t seen The Imitation Game to be fair, but the attention that Cumberbatch is getting is actually the attention Nightcrawler and Gyllenhaal deserve.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And these nominations, with so little fanfare elsewhere about the film and Gyllenhaal’s performance have to be generating interest among AMPAS voters while sending flares up to the TIG folk.

      • I Choose Me says:

YES! Saw Nightcrawler and although the film had issues I was blown away by Jake’s performance.

      • joe spider says:

I saw TIG a week ago and must say I wasn’t blown away by either the film or the performances. It was ok, that’s all.

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

It’s all about promotion and campaigning. Cumberbatch campaigns hard, Gyllenhaal doesn’t at all and that’s why all the attention is focused on The Imitation Game rather than Nightcrawler. I think Jake already deserved the nomination last year for Prisoners but Fassbender was the non-campaigning exception and they won’t give it to more than one actor who refuses to beg for it. Actually, I expected Jake to try much harder since Nightcrawler has many ingredients of the perfect Oscar-bait (weight-loss – check, mental illness – check, sacrificing for role – check). He should be all over talk-shows and magazines by now talking about dieting, hurting his hand and jeopardizing his health for art.

      • A. Key says:

@Norman Bates’ Mother (lololol major props for the name!)
I totally agree, especially about Prisoners – that’s the first time it hit me JG is actually a proper talented actor. Spectacular performance, I can’t believe it didn’t generate more attention.
And yes, JG should campaign more really. I don’t mind Cumberbatch campaigning, to make it clear, he’s a talented actor as well, and it is all part of the job, but I have a feeling TIG isn’t the best performance of the year, and after seeing Nightcrawler, I just feel bad that such quality will probably remain off radar.

      • Anne tommy says:

Jake was brilliant as was tom in OLLA. Boyhood was pretty much a masterpiece, with Ethan hawke terrific

    • Lilacflowers says:

Just saw Foxcatcher. Steve Carrell isn’t even recognizable; not just in terms of a fake nose but in how he carries his body and his speech patterns.

      • MtnRunner says:

We’ve got Birdman, Whiplash and ToE at our local art theater and after seeing all of them, I have to put them in that order as favorites. Loved every lead and supporting performance in each, but ToE’s script seemed a bit *safe* to me.

As Norton did in Birdman, I think Jones upstaged Eddie’s performance, but perhaps that’s because Jane would have had more emotional range than Stephen. Eddie’s physical transformation was well done, I thought. He seemed to inhabit the character.

Nightcrawler is next on my list; not sure I can watch Foxcatcher, as it looks terribly depressing.

  9. joe spider says:

Well there are other good actors out there. Would be more delighted if Tom won the Evening Standard award for Coriolanus to be honest, and I think he would too.

    • Grace says:

And even more delighted if he’s in London to receive the award in person. 🙂

      • joe spider says:

        🙂 🙂 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

If he’s going, he needs to be on a plane now or cut it really close to Sunday. The east coast is getting serious “weather”and lots of flights today are going to be disrupted.

      • 'P'enny says:

more chance of a white Christmas in London.

however, saying that, watch his twitter feed, last year the hints were there. he followed a London coffee shop, the same day. And, he plays with twitter when he is in airports, watch his favs and follows for hints. 😉

Personally, if the 15 hour days he has been putting in none stop are true he maybe well over due a break or he’s spending your thanksgiving in bed with a whiskey and a good book.

      • Isadora says:

I hope for him it’s the latter – whiskey and a good book. Travelling now to London for an award show and then back to finish ISTL makes me exhausted even thinking about. He would have a hellish schedule to make that happen.

I still hope he wins, though! I can take the award in his stead! 😀 *practicing my best award winning smile*

    • Lilacflowers says:

Lead actor is an incredibly strong category this year and I can’t quibble over any of those who did get nominations here.

      • Sixer says:

I’m just hoping that they can get through this year without another voting/Mirren debacle!

      • Lilacflowers says:

The Spirit Awards or the Evening Standard Awards?

      • 'P'enny says:

Evening Standard awards, a couple of judges quit because over best actress vote. I think, Helen Mirren won, but she didn’t sort of thing.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Didn’t they quit because of the pressure to award Mirren because she is Mirren and they wanted the star power, not because everyone thought she deserved it?

      • Sixer says:

They made the vote secret for the first time ever. But they still all made their recommendation speeches. When Mirren had won, they were all amazed because no-one had spoken for her. Cue conspiracy theories and three of the judges resigned in outrage.

The official line was that one of the judges had voted for someone who’d been moved to the musical category, so they counted their second vote instead and that meant Mirren won (I think they give 3 preferences, and then scored 3 points for first place, 2 for second, 1 for third or somesuch, which could explain why Mirren won when nobody had her first and spoken for her).

Whatever it was or wasn’t, it was WHIFFY.

      • icerose says:

I like the list of judges they had this year even if they area tad conservative. There is a strong female representation.
I do know that the Evening Standard awards have been accused of liking big names names who bring in the publicity,
I was surprised at only three actor nominations although I have to say that of those I have seen Tom and Mark Strong gave the most vibrant passionate performances.
Scottsboro Boys deserve the musical and I am still holding out for McCrory

      • Dara says:

I’m still holding out hope that Tuxedo Tom makes an appearance in London and wins the damn thing. Santa baby – I’ve been an awful good girl. And after spending 4 days with relatives that don’t believe in the soothing power of alcohol, I am sure gonna need some tidings of comfort and joy on Sunday.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone – safe travels to all wherever you are, with a special mention added for those in the path of the Nor’easter.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else too! Trying to figure out how my sister just 20 miles away has snow while the temperature at my house is in the mid-40s. We do have family flying up through this from the south and I hope they arrive safely and with minimal delays. We do believe in the soothing powers of alcohol in my family; without which I couldn’t deal with one of my siblings. Also the celebratory affects – we’re welcoming two brand new babies. Yes, sightings of Tuxedo Tom would be most welcome Sunday evening.

      • Grace says:

Happy Thanksgiving! Clueless foreigner person living in London here, I hope it’s okay to ask: if you have turkey for Thanksgiving, why do you have for Christmas?

      • Dara says:

@Grace – it’s always ok to ask about food imo. Christmas here is a little more dealer’s choice than Thanksgiving when it comes to foodstuffs. Some do turkey again, ham is popular, as is a good beef roast in some form or another – prime rib or tenderloin being my personal favorites. Some have a big seafood feast on Christmas Eve. It’s all over the map really.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Grace, some people just like turkey and one feeds a lot of people so it is good for large gatherings. I usually don’t have it again at Christmas. I lean towards beef or ham at Christmas.

      • MtnRunner says:

@Grace, turkey for Thanksgiving and either turkey again or ham for Christmas. I don’t care as long as the Mr makes his world famous garlic-cheesy mashed potatoes to go with it.

Hoping for a Tuxedo Tom appearance this weekend too!

      • Sixer says:

I’m British and I ALWAYS have beef at Christmas (forerib, on the bone)!

      • icerose says:

We were a large family so we always had ham and turkey for both and my mum liked to take a break from cooking for the next few days -so it was feed yourself on cold turkey and ham.

      • Grace says:

Got back from my creative writing class to find so many food ideas. Thanks ladies! I’ve learned something today. 🙂 I wish you all a very lovely Thanksgiving! Lots of food and wine/spirit and laughter with your family.

@Sixer, too early to wish you Merry Christmas, how about a drink in the bunker?

      • Anne tommy says:

So hiddles is in bed with whiskey and a good book P’enny…something is missing from that scenario, a third item that would make it just perfect…now what is it…? Or yes, I know…me…

      • joe spider says:

Forget about the bok Anne tommy!

  10. Megan says:

    Damn, Michael Keaton looks good.

  11. Beth says:

I’m here for the Whiplash, Birdman and Tilda love.

Keaton looks like an older Mark Ruffalo in that photo above.

    • MtnRunner says:

Same here… those are the only ones I’ve seen to date. Thrilled that Norton got a nod. I think he stole the scene everytime.

  12. Birdie says:

I watched Nightcrawler last night and #alltheawards for Jake Gyllenhaal! He is brilliant in it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

He is unbelievably creepy in it. He just inhabits that character completely. A great performance. Nice to see Riz Ahmed get recognition for it too.

      • Birdie says:

Is Riz’ character Jake’s characters employee?

Edit: Just looked it up. Nice to see him nominated, but … Not really award worthy in my opinion.

    • pixie-stix says:

I just saw Nightcrawler, what a performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, my mind is reeling. I’m in the Keaton camp though…so glad to see him back, I really enjoyed his performance in Birdman.

Wouldn’t it be a treat to see Tom show up on Sunday…

    • icerose says:

I am looking forward to seeing that performance.

  13. Ginger says:

I want Tilda to win but would be just as pleased if Julianne takes ALL the awards. LOVE her! It would be really interesting to see Ethan win something.

  14. Ratherbeme says:

I love Tilda so much. I’ve had her name on reserve for a baby since Orlando. And I loved everything about OLLA. It would be great to see Jarmusch win as well.

  15. Lilacflowers says:

Nice to see the recognition and love for Nightcrawler, Boyhood, OLLA, and Love is Strange, although I think Marisa Tomei was robbed. She was the strongest character in LIS; she held it all together brilliantly.

  16. mia girl says:

    I say Birdman for everything!
Saw is this past weekend and still have my jaw open in awe. It was amazing.
    Michael Keaton wins at life.

    • j.eyre says:

*begins placing random objects in mia girl’s open mouth*

I have heard it is excellent. The same for Whiplash – I simply must get out more.

$20 says the keychain falls out before the grape cluster – and no pushing with your tongue.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I saw it a few weeks ago, and while I really enjoyed it and Keaton’s performance…it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. It was a teeny bit navel gazing as far as the acting industry goes. There were moments when I thought the writing reminded me of Newsroom or some other Aaron Sorkin show, where the characters are standing in as mouth pieces for the writer making declarations about life.

I still enjoyed it and I loved that it wasn’t predictable or traditional and was shot in an interesting way. Keaton was really great, and I was amazed at the way they angled light through Emma Stone’s marble-like eyes. I couldn’t look away from her eyes when they were in a scene.

    • mia girl says:

      @Tiffany
I totally get what you are saying in terms of some of the dialogue. But I have such appreciation for what these filmakers set out to do (and succeeded in most respects).

I loved the attempt to have one continuous camera shot running fluidly through the film, and as the story progressed it really added to the disjointed/surreal feel of things.
Every actor’s performance was on point and more, including Zach Galifianakis playing the straight guy (who knew?).

But Keaton was so impressive. He was all in – with no vanity. I loved it. I want him to win everything.

PS Wish we could share our thoughts on the story and the meaning of the ending…. but don’t want to be a spoiler for others. 

      • icerose says:

so ;oolong forward to seeing this and the other possible nominations. Most of them are coming to my local arts centre after Xmas but so far no Nightcrawler

  17. FingerBinger says:

I’m rooting for Patricia Arquette. I keep hearing her performance in Boyhood is amazing. She’s also one of the most underrated actresses.

    • Lilacflowers says:

It was. Also amazing was that she and Ethan Hawke both signed onto that project for 12 years.

  18. ToodySezHey says:

    All I see is pale.

  19. Hazel says:

Tom was nowhere good enough in OLLA for a nomination. Mia Wasikowska made more of an impression and she was only in it for 5 minutes.

I’m really happy for Jenny Slate.

  20. OTHER RENEE says:

You haven’t seen “Boyhood” yet?! One of the best films I’ve ever seen. Seriously. Patricia Arquette is fabulous. The whole cast is fabulous actually.

  21. Diana B says:

In didn’t like Boyhood. It was an interesting project that took a lot of commitment but I just wasn’t feeling it. I guess I must be in the minority but I just didn’t think it was that amazing. Oh well…

  22. ellesbelles says:

The comments were closed on the other TH post 🙁

I haven’t seen OLLA yet but from what I’ve observed through reviews and comments, Tilda really stole that movie. I’m thrilled for her nomination!

    • 'P'enny says:

Tilda didn’t ‘steal’ anything in the movie, the film was hers from the beginning. Tilda and Jim worked and developed the film together initially. OLLA is about Eve, the film starts with her on the floor with room spinning to music, it sets the scene. She is dominant and strongest character that they all fall too. I love characters like that, there are not enough of them in film today.

I consider actors who steal films when they are the supporting role and the lead actor is not the focal point of the film, as it should be.

      • ellesbelles says:

fair enough, perhaps my original comment should have read “owned”

      • jammypants says:

I kind of like how “low key” Adam was. Total contrast to Loki!

      • MtnRunner says:

Jammypants, I found the Coriolanus links finally… thanks! Hoping I have time to watch that and the Jeremy Irons one today!

      • ellesbelles says:

@MtnR You will not be disappointed! I have to watch it again because it was loading really slow at first but god damn. I know he plays a not so sweet character but the ruthless aggression was hot as F, and i cringed and cried in a few of the scenes

      • jammypants says:

@MtnRunner, great! Let me know what you think.

    • icerose says:

I loved her in the film but Tom got a lot of good reviews as well and most of them said it was their film. I do think Adam was written as w low key charter compared to the actor nominations which is fair enough.

    • Lilacflowers says:

JJ wrote the film for Tilda so, of course, she’s the focus. It took them over 7 years to get it made. JJ wanted Fassbender for Adam but he turned it down and the part was re-written several times. Tilda wanted Tom for the part and talked JJ into reluctantly giving him an interview. JJ had never seen Loki and probably still hasn’t. He did a nice job with it. True that without Eve, Adam could have been a depressing bore but without Adam’s edginess and hints of danger, Eve’s saintly mother earth bit could have been quite boring as well. Together they were lovely and I didn’t want the film to end, I wanted more time with them.

Actually, I would love it if somehow, Jessie and Celine from Linklater’s “Before series” and the guys from “The Trip” movies and OLLA’s Adam and Eve could somehow all intersect together in some weird mishmash in a Tangiers coffee shop. The bizarre conversations that could ensue with the guys all doing impressions and Eve telling Celine that twelve years together is nothing, snap out of it, would be priceless.

    • MtnRunner says:

He doesn’t have to be sweet. Just show me his liquid sex voice and his brick shithouse body.

      Yes, I’m shallow.

    • TotallyBiased says:

      @ellesbelles
I’ll just leave this here for you. As it is from Bustle, it isn’t “pure” or 100% accurate in its quotes. But by and large, the man did say those lovely things about his Hiddlestoners 😉
      http://www.bustle.com/articles/51239-does-tom-hiddleston-like-the-hiddlestoners-yes-hell-defend-them-to-the-end-of-thes

      • philae says:

lol that is 3 years old, he changed his mind in the meantime.
He repeated more than once that he stays away from Tumblr, he was embarrassed at that drawing shown to him at the Chatty Man, not to mention the embarrassment for how his fans behaved during Coriolanus and High Rise, and of course that bit in last year interview where he said he wished his fans would understand that he doesn’t always want to stop and take a picture with them, or that some are so derailed they need to be talked down from the ledge.
There’s a reason why he stopped using twitter. And rightly so.

      • 'P'enny says:

        Philae

I suspect your right, but you can’t categorically state he has changed his mind.
Only last year at the Thor 2 Premiere he was praising the support of his fans, did that rather embarrassing kneeling to the cos-players in Germany. And, he did it again to the high Rise crowd.

In defence of the High Rise fans, there were a lot of jealous naysayers who were a bit mean to the groupies. :-p

At the end of the day, didn’t have to come to them.

      • icerose says:

I think it was the same with Coriolanus. Yes some got a bit carried away but most of the time it was fine. Saying that sometimes you do not want to stop is a fair enough statement but he does not add anything negative about them.
“‘Some people have been a bit obsessive about attributing responsibility for things that have happened in their lives to me. You want to say: “Bless you for saying those nice things, but I’ve done nothing.” You sort of have to talk them off the ledge a bit. But that’s the nature of obsession. I know a lot of other actors who’ve dealt with it”

is not the same as derailed. And as Tom says he is not alone in this. Many actors have fans who claim that they saved them from depression etc .He sounds very understanding about it as do many other actors who come across similar responses.I think he said talking them of the ledge metaphorically in the sense he tries to explain it is not just him without hurting them at the same time

      • philae says:

P’enny, don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t suggesting he hates his fans but when he started with twitter in 2011 he clearly thought having fans was all perks, now he clearly does not. If the name hiddlestoner were to disappear from the face of the internet he’d probably be the most happy, as he would be if journalists stopped asking him about tumblr porn fanfics or porn “art” whenever he is promoting a film. There no defence for High Rise fans, insulting Sienna G. and her husband, while the man had to work with her was an embarrassment.

Icerose, People who stalk his house and nearby places where he goes to eat just to meet him, are derailed. People who waited outside Donmar every night even if they didn’t see the show to get a hug ae derailed. He didn’t get himself a security person because he felt lonely.

I like Tilda and all but I thought “Only Lovers Left Alive” was pretentious and boring, and her performance while good was not that impressive, I hope Julianne Moore takes that award.

Also I’m really happy to see Jake Gyllenhaal’s nom, Nightcrawler was amazing, he really deserves it. I’m surprised to see no Rene Russo tho, she was really good in the movie too, more deserving than Riz Ahmed IMO.

  24. Tig says:

Yes to Boyhood! Re Tilda- I love her period, so OLLA worked for me on account of her. I don’t get MC’s nomination for “The Immigrant” at all.

  25. TotallyBiased says:

Tom fairly defines ‘supporting’, to me–it was always Tilda’s movie all the way. Subtle underpinnings, no matter how well done, rarely inspire awards. But I loved him in it, thought it was an excellent turn. They both drew me in so thoroughly, and every time I watch it I see/feel something new.
TBH, even though OLLA is certainly eligible, I didn’t think ISA voters would retain enough love for it this long after release.

I’m more surprised by The Imitation Game’s complete shutout. Suspect this is NOT in HW’s scrip for how things are supposed to go.

    • Grace says:

I am more worried what’s to follow on TIG front. More aggressive campaign until we’re all blue in the face?

    • icerose says:

Did you see my comment about Harvey fudging production costs on films so that they come in under the $20,000,000 eligibility criteria which he has done before and the possibility that voters deliberately boycotted it.

      • TotallyBiased says:

That would make more sense re TIG if it hadn’t been a post-production pick up for HW. All of its numbers were in the accounts before he came along, so I don’t think there’s any doubt of TIG’s honest eligibility. It seems counter to the, er, ‘spirit’ of the awards for the nominating committee to ignore outstanding work for the sake of sticking it to HW–unless they didn’t actually consider the work that impressive.

      • icerose says:

@Totally biased I do not know for sure but I have picked up issues about eligibility on several sighs as an explanation. I can imagine accounts can still be reorganised post pickup but to be fair only one sight put the question of eligibility down to the financial criteria but others have argued that questions over eligibility may have influenced the voters. I would much rather think they did not rate it but it did seem odd it was completely shut out after all the hype.
        This is what Deadline said
“The Weinstein Company’s major Oscar player The Imitation Game supposedly was eligible somehow (I’m not exactly sure how) but was shut out, and I have a feeling that’s because the selection committee likely felt it shouldn’t have been eligible. Otherwise its omission is absolutely criminal and makes no sense. TWC has gotten around those Spirit rules before, most notably with Silver Linings Playbook and The Artist (but not The King’s Speech) but failed to do so this time.”

    • Dara says:

I’m hearing conflicting stories on TIG even being eligible. Budget was one reason, but don’t 2 out of 3 of producer, director, writer have to be American? That aside, can I just say that if I were the ISA nominating committee (or however it’s done), I’d shaft Harvey and his films just for spite alone.

I applaud the intention of the ISA’s, but I’m going to side eye just a little at how corporate and mainstream they are getting. They haven’t quite achieved “Bud Light Award for Fresh Taste” status, but they’re not far off. If not careful, the Independent Spirit to which they aspire will be crushed under the advertising wave.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Dara–as I understand it, two out of three that you listed *are* in fact American on TIG, which is why it was eligible and (for example) TOE was not.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Sentiments that Jarmusch, an indie darling, has been voicing about the Spirit awards the past few years.

      • j says:

they gave writing credits to moore (us) and hodges (uk), so idk

but imo it’s not right for these awards

big eyes for best screenplay though? i wanted to like that but not good

      • Dara says:

@Totally – well that shows you just how much I’ve not been paying attention to TIG…I just assumed it was an all-Brit production.

      • MtnRunner says:

The writer for the Atlantic said that to be considered an American film that two-thirds of the writing/directing/producing duties have to fall to U.S. citizens or the film is set primarily in the U.S. and 70 percent financed by U.S. production companies. Wouldn’t that disqualify TIG?

      • TotallyBiased says:

        @MtnRunner
American credits at writer and producer make TIG eligible.
I’ve noticed a school of thought in the media with a theory that had already occurred to me. Even though TOE isn’t eligible for any ISA except Foreign Film, the general idea that two posh Brit actors in period biopics about significant Brit geniuses could cause some diffusion of reactions makes a lot of sense to me.

      • icerose says:

@MtnRunner “”and 70 percent financed by U.S. production companies. ” “citizens or the film is set primarily in the U.S.””
TIG was financed by Black Bear films a USA company but it was set entirely in the UK.
It would that have also disqualified OLLA which was German financed but set primarily in USA.

      • MtnRunner says:

        *TotallyBiased & icerose*

Maybe they fudge a bit on the “rules” from time to time.

      • j says:

they can disqualify something at their discretion, particularly if the budget ends up looking over on paper

OLLA qualifies under the 2/3 rule: US director and writer.

THR says tig was deemed ineligible. could be budget on paper, could be because they gave a writing credit to a UK guy

      • icerose says:

J your are right-as I read it elsewhere they have to be eligible in one of the three categories- production team, funding and where it is set/character origins. Plus the budget must be under 20,000.000 including post production spending.
OLLA PASSED three out of four.
TIG passed on funding and maybe production team?? so it could leave budget. I wonder if post production costs include publicity.
Who is THR – according to most of the information coming out TIG was eligible

      • MtnRunner says:

        @Icerose

        THR = The Hollywood Reporter

  26. MeloMelo says:

Not gonna lie, I laughed out loud when I realized Miles Teller didn’t make it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      You were not alone.

    • Dara says:

Me too! And I hope that JK Simmons wins all the things. He deserves it and it would have the added bonus of taking that Miles kid down a peg or two.

      • MtnRunner says:

        *melomelo, dara, lilac*

What? What? I’ve only seen Miles in Whiplash. He’s not British so I know nothing about him. What’s this about needing humbled? Do share!

      • MtnRunner says:

Nevermind, just read the previous posts. Throwing shade at Cusack? Not familiar with JK Simmons work? What a douche. Makes me even happier for JK’s recognition. He’s a class act.

  27. A. Key says:

    “Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler”
Yes! Finally someone notices, he was phenomenal.

Also Tilda carried OLLA, Hiddles doesn’t deserve a lead nomination tbh.

    • icerose says:

I think Tilda had the stronger part but most critics said it was their charisma and performances that were central to the films success.

  28. TotallyBiased says:

Not gonna lie, I’m still slightly gobsmacked at this headline–our MasterDragonflyBaiter must be back on the Cumby Train with a first class ticket. Were we *expecting* Tom to get a nom? Was anyone even discussing it?
Yet the Bendybot is totally shut out of what has had correlation to the Oscars in recent years (correlation is not causality, of course, but with Uniform distribution one could claim Spirit awards attention increases chance of Oscar –if even nominated– from 20% to 50%.) AND NOTHING IN THE HEADLINE? No articles, no comments in text, no nothing. Isn’t that considerably bigger news?

    • jammypants says:

This tends to happen a lot with Hiddleston posts. Like how he was a drama queen for Jessica Chastain needing to take 7 months off after working on Crimson Peak. It’s pulled out of thin air.

    • Dara says:

@Totally – but if it had been all about how TIG was snubbed, that would have been three (THREE!!) Cumby-centric threads in one day. Surely that would have violated some law of the universe and we all would have ceased to exist in an instant… where is Stephen Hawking when you need him to explain the science behind such things. Us Dragonflies would have been forced to thread-jack, which does no one any good. Besides, Kaiser is an equal opportunity MasterBaiter (teehee) and I for one am grateful that she throws us a bone on occasion – the Dragonfly King has been far too busy working to have any juicy gossip and I was feeling left out.

      • icerose says:

        @Dara SO TRUE

      • jammypants says:

@Dara, out of the millions of Cumbersome threads, NONE have been locked. All old Dragonfly posts have been locked.

      • Dara says:

@jammy – the comment counts on all the Cumbersome (nice phrase btw) threads have blown my mind. I did a quick, unscientific tally a few days ago but my calculator overheated and gave out somewhere in the 5,000 neighborhood. Gracious sakes, that’s a lot! Maybe they were kept open in a valiant effort to quarantine the zeal? Imagine the hot mess all the other comment sections would have become if there had been bleed-through.

Disclaimer – the above snarky comment was in no way meant to demean or otherwise belittle the Cumbercollective, their passion for their annointed deity, his talent or his low-key personal life. Florals forever!

      • Grace says:

@Dara, I see what you did there. 😉

      • Dara says:

        Hi Grace!

    • icerose says:

I just did not think Adam as good as Tom was award material. Also so much time has gone by and it rarely comes up on any Oscar lists so even the two nominations was a big surprise.
A lot of headlines have been about Imitation Game being shut out and not one word in any commentaries re Tom missing out.
@jimmypants I never read anything about Tom making a 7 month comment. Was it on here.

      • Grace says:

Yup. Before THE engagement, I think. It didn’t get lots of comments though. People saw right through the bait. I don’t know about you guys, I’ve never seen any film Jessica Chastain’s been in either, so I probably shouldn’t say this. But she gives off a diva vibe. Like she wouldn’t think twice putting someone else down, directly talking to the person or not, you know what I mean?

      • Grace says:

🙂 They know we’d click at least if Tom’s name is in the title.

Jammy, where did your comment go?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, the thread title was that Jessica Chastein had to take seven months off after working with Tom on Crimson Peak. She did take seven months off but it was because she had done five movies on top of each other with little or no break in between. In fact, I think for the first few weeks of CP filming, she was still traveling back to NY on weekends to finish up another film. It wasn’t that Tom had made a seven month commitment; the suggestion was that he exhausts people. But it didn’t come from Jessica.

      • Allegra says:

I think she took a break because she need to promote her movies. She went to Cannes in May to do that after she finishes CP.
What i can´t understand why people can not say the true?

      • jammypants says:

@Allegra, because it’s Hiddles’ fault! tiresome he is :p

      • jammypants says:

        @Grace, no idea.

      • joe spider says:

Jim Beaver didn’t need a 7 month holiday – I think he wanted to adopt Tom, 🙂

      • Isadora says:

To be honest, I have no problem to believe that Tom DOES exhaust people. 😀 He is endearing of course, but man…

      • Allegra says:

Well, we all can be tiresome in differents moments of our life.
For ex, i know that I can be a pain on the axx when I talk about the problems that I have to deal in my job. Also, I had a friend(more than 1) that spent 3 years complaining that her boyfriend treated her badly, but she didn´t want to dump that jerk. So, It happens to everyone.
In my opinion it is better to deal with someone tiresome than to deal with a grumpy , mean or evil person.

      • MtnRunner says:

As long as he’s tiresome in a sweet, puppy-dog-humping-your-leg sort of way, I can love and tolerate. 🙂

We’re so starved for Dragonfly posts (and desperate for a Cumby break), I think we’d take the bait, no matter how dull or ridiculous the title.

      • icerose says:

@MtnRunner To true but hopefully after Christmas we will have a little Hiddle’s MAGIC

      • jammypants says:

@icerose, or maybe a sneak peek of Crimson Peak? Del Toro mentioned it so now I’m hoping it’ll happen

    • Josa says:

Maybe OP is trying to sway the attention away from the shut out of TIG by using MasterDragonflyBaiter to distract? Unlike that other posh actor who played a character tailor-made for award, and he’s supposed to be nominated left and right this award season and is very actively campaigning for those nominations, there weren’t many expectation for Tom in OLLA because Adam is such a sourpuss and that character is easily overshadowed by other upbeat more crowd-pleasing characters. Regardless, people is going to use this as a knock on Tom’s performance, not surprise.

      • jammypants says:

I agree. It was not meant to be an award-worthy performance. It was just good and very enjoyable. He’s been absent all year and somehow the snark still comes his way.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, it never ends, does it? No matter what he does or doesn’t do.

      • Allegra says:

Don´t worry, ladies. Some things will never change, so just ignore.
Like Tom said once: “The best revenge against bullies is absolutely, resolutely, never to let them change who you are.”
Besides, what really matters is that he is having a great time , doing what he loves to do, meeting and working with interesting people.

      • jammypants says:

Sad but true. Haters gonna hate.

      • icerose says:

I thought Guillermo had a reputation for dong lots of takes -I seem to remember Beaver said one actor who( I am convinced was Tom ) did numerous takes of being slapped very hard and how impressed he was.
        @ Allegra so true
“The best revenge against bullies is absolutely, resolutely, never to let them change who you are.”

So what are the next awards in the steps towards the Oscars

      • jammypants says:

@Allegra, I quite like this quote:

“Haters never win. I just think that’s true about life, because negative energy always costs in the end.”

      • Allegra says:

        @icerose:

I think that person got slapped 15 times, since Tom let Natalie and Chris H. hit him hard and the fact that he is kind perfectionist, I´m with you in this one.

        @ jammypants:
Tom has a way with words, I think that if he had not chosen the acting profession, he could succeed as a writer or as a professor of literature.

    • j says:

probably because it’s unclear. they confirmed wild was eligible (so snubbed) but refused to confirm tig was, which usually means it wasn’t but at their discretion tbh

Hollywood Reporter and some other reputable places are reporting tig wasn’t deemed eligible

again, this is silly. shes running out of material so that will probably get used tomorrow lol

      • icerose says:

I think everyone is a bit confused re TIG but whatever happened it was not part of Weinstein plans as he submitted it.

    • joe spider says:

I know he was joking but a website’s headline didn’t suggest that!

  29. Yoobushi says:

    Unbroken didn’t get any then?

  30. Grace says:

So, one suit to slay them all… why say you, ladies?

  31. Diane says:

So thrilled to see Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler. It was an amazing performance and film. There hasn’t been much hype about him. Good call.

  32. Grace says:

Anyone wants to listen to young Hiddles speaking Greek in a play? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AmRve7EZRE
Discovering all kinds of ways to use Google video search. *wink* Thanks, Jammypants.

    • joe spider says:

I saw this some time ago on the web and someone was snooty enough to criticise his Greek accent! I thought “and how the hell do you know how the Ancient Greeks sounded! Because it sure as anything won’t be like Greeks sound today” 🙂

      • icerose says:

I saw that as well and though the same .I just think it is amazing he can do a whole play in it let alone read the books required for his degree,

      • joe spider says:

and appear in The Gathering Storm BBC series too!

    • jammypants says:

I love that his passion from his early days still carried into his current career.

  33. Lux says:

To the people saying The Imitation Game didn’t fit the criteria, I’ll just leave this except from Gold Derby:
“While it might seem strange that the British-themed WWII drama “The Imitation Game” was even in the running, the criteria set out by Film Independent dictate that two of the three key creatives (in this case screenwriter Graham Moore and producer Harvey Weinstein) are American. Alternatively, the film must be set stateside with at least 70% of the funding coming from an American source (that is how Weinstein got “The Artist” a slew of Spirit Awards back in 2011.) “

    • icerose says:

Weinstein was not the producer according to wiki and IMDb but there is a list of American producers. On wiki it said he only brought the distribution rights but it was funded stateside by Blackbear films. So yes 2/3 but the other criteria is cost and that could have been where there were issues re fudging. On the other hand those producers have very slim CVAs
But we will probably never know whether it was that not they did not rate the film.

  34. TotallyBiased says:

Okay…I’ll be nicer. It’s just confusing sometimes why certain threads are closed. So….there’s video out now! And lots more pics. Oh, and SH’s dress makes me wonder if, should I stare at it long enough, a three-dimensional fully rigged sailing ship will appear. Or a dolphin.
