I’m sure I could just write “Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter” here and this post would still get 300-plus comments, right? But I won’t do that! Benedict and Sophie made their SECOND red carpet couple-appearance last night at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. I have to say, the turnout at this event was pretty spectacular and rather A-list. When I was looking through the photos, I was happy to see how many people came out for it.
Benedict wasn’t nominated, he just came to present an award and (I suppose) to shill for his turn on the London stage next year in Hamlet. Plus, Benedict has ties to the London theatre community. As does Sophie! Remember, she’s some sort of avant-garde theatre writer/director… when she’s not starring in bizarre, half-naked music videos. Anyway… Sophie looks nice. The dress is Erdem, the same label she wore for her first red carpet with Cumberbatch. This dress is conservative, flattering, not really anything crazy or noteworthy (but I’m not the biggest Erdem fan, so there). I would have liked to see her do an elegant chignon for an evening event though.
Meanwhile, The Imitation Game had a stellar weekend in limited release (in NYC and LA), earning $482,000… in just four theaters. Variety had a glowing write-up about Harvey Weinstein’s strategy for pushing TIG, and Variety basically says that Harvey is pushing it like The Artist and The King’s Speech, with a slow-burn limited release in November/December, building to a wider release around Christmas. The game is all about momentum and apparently TIG has some serious momentum. MOAR BENDY.

They are British….so culturally I never expected them to be all over each other, smiles to their ears, and eyeing each other adoringly. I’m sure they appear to be boring because in real life….guess what…….they probably are. Why are people shocked and surprised by all this. Get real. Benedict is not the passionate I’m going to rip your clothes off and devour you type and never was. He might talk a good game but the guy is probably a wuss and prude as hell despite being an actor. I wish them all the happiness!

Generally I agree but anyone who follow BC’s career knows how openly physical and loving he is with his past gfs. So not valid here.

When I googled Tom’s name last night looking for more ES coverage of the wintters, I couldn’t believe how many of the sites focused on Ben and Sophie. Blerg.
Anderson & Hiddleston were on the cover of the London Evening Standard print edition this evening. BC is very recognisable and has just had a film release in the UK so it’s not surprising The Times featured him on the cover.
Considering how long they ducked being in the same frame, not altogether surprizing that the papers want to feature the pics now, plus they did pick the Times for their engagement notice.
Agree it’s weird that the winners weren’t on the front page.
It’s not as if the press were desperately tracking him trying to get picture of him with her all this time. Nobody was aware of them at all. It really isn’t a big deal to the general public. And now…meh.
There were the photos of the nyc premiere and I found it odd enough that they were front page news, but now this..it’s just so bizarre.
It is now evident why they put the engagement notice in the Times. Another piece of the puzzle solved.

I have decided to become a fan of Sophie Hunter. Firstly, she makes wonderfully entertaining videos. Secondly, she wears posh dresses and plenty of slap to red carpets but still manages to look vaguely dowdy. I find this wonderfully refreshing since, to fashionphobics like me, the red carpet is usually peopled with strange plastic dolls styled by Effie Trinket.

I concur. She is like a superhero, who, by day has a quiet proper Brit look, but by night, has the power of rolly polly fish heads to set the world off its axis, flinging Cumberbatch fans into a tailspin frenzy, deep into the solar system. So unassuming, like Clark Kent, and yet so full of strength.
Poor Effie looks rather subdued in the latest Hunger Games. When can we expect more videos from Sophie? Will she continue to work with seafood or expand into working with birds or mammals?

Based on body language, I’d say she is the INFLUENCER in this relationship. Looking at her snaps with her ex-boyfriend, she didn’t look affectionate with him either.
I think Ben is following her lead here since we know he’s a touchy-feeling kind of guy with other women. It’s sad to see someone change for the worse due to the person that they are closely associated with.
I don’t think it’s affection though. Like I’ve said before, there’s no need to be kissing and groping. Warmth and closeness is a different intangible thing. Also, the few pics that exist of her and her bf aren’t really enough to judge. They were usually taken in mid conversation (but she’d usually seek out the camera anyway).

I can see his foot look slightly more towards her than NY, as that has been discussed and they’re apparently reading, but the way he held his body, it’s stiff and looks uncomfortable to me, it just screams POSING, it looks like they may have practised for some time for the POSE and just do it in front of the cameras. Yeah, I am totally starting to believe the conspiracy theories. They are so stiff with each other. Wonderful, welcome to the fold. I think we’re over 20 by now for the PR sham vote with maybe one or two thinking it’s real.
Crazy busy with work at the moment, so haven’t had much time to keep up with all the Cumberbatch shenanigans, but wanted to briefly jump in to say that as of today I think I’m off the fence and firmly in the PR sham camp. It’s just too consistently weird and awkward to be anything else imo.
Even more than the cold body language (there appears to be NO tenderness or humour there whatsoever), it’s the blanket, fawning press coverage that’s making me suspicious. I know that BC = clicks and they’re chasing readers, but the extent to which all the tabs seemed to have articles written up in advance, and that those articles displaced the actual winners of the awards in many cases is just… too convenient for my liking.
I’m not a super-invested fan, and up till now l now I haven’t been all that fussed about whether he’s engaged or not (other than to be a bit WTF about the way he’s gone about things), but seeing the front page of today’s Times was the first time I felt actively angry about the engagement hoopla. If I were Hiddleston or Anderson I’d be fuming.

I’m kind of leaning towards the idea that they were in a realtionship and things went south. That would explain a lot to me. They broke up before planned the publicity stunt and that would explain why BC is so, well angry. And she doesn’t ever seem offended or upset that he’s being like this. The best fame ho’s make an effort to make both parties look the part of a happy couple; they tell the other to smile and wave, etc. but she does nothing. She lets him be mad at her and be disrespectful to her. His people also do nothing, which again says that there might be a good reason for it and telling him to do better would only make it worse. His previous gfs were also never “gorgeous” and “glamorous” (and I’m sorry but Anna James was effing hot and Olivia was cute as a bug’s ear)–looks like tabs are kissing some butt to stay in PR’s good graces and get the hot mess, er, dirt first.

I was very interested to see if any pictures of SH interacting with Helen McCory, Hiddles, Mark Strong and his wife, Ann Marie Duff, etc from last night’s event. All I saw was one with her and Tom Stoppard’s wife. Nothing wrong with that-but interested to see who she chooses to speak with and be seen with at these types of events. If there are such pics out forgive me; curious but not curious enough to search, ya know?
@scarf girl – The only SH pictures from After Party were her posing alone. BC was mingling and photographed with many people. No SH anywhere near. I don’t even bother to point out the weirdness anymore.

Ingrid – glad I was not the only one to see the weirdness wig lack of mingling pictures. But I would die for a picture of SH and Kinvara (for the record, I thought Kinvara’s dress very flattering if she would stand up straight). And don’t you know the fact SH seated next to Tom Ford did not go over well? Not a huge Lady K fan, but somehow I am rooting for her now.

I absolutely adore Cumby, but too much is simply too much! He’s been everywhere and all over everything for the past year or so. I am already convinced he is great in TIG knowing his previous work, but this kind of exposure in nearly every single magazine has put me off the film entirely, which is a shame really, and I am all for Eddie to win the little golden man after having seen TOE last week. As to Sophie… WoW! She certainly cannot dress, but otherwise I think this is the perfect match. Also, showing that much restraint in public (in front of dozens of photographers) is just normal.
It’s not restraint, it’s awkwardness. Nobody is expecting dry humping (she saves that for her short movies), but just comfort and genuine warmth. That’s the kind of thing that is intangible that you cannot fake, it’s not about PDAs. And I wouldn’t say anything about this is normal.
I’m also always a bit perplexed as to why people seem sure she’s the ‘perfect match’. Obviously, I know as much about him as anyone here, but it seems to me that people are basing this ‘perfect match’ on some rather insignificant and sometimes irrelevantly snobbish issues.
If you had no clue about her history, her behavior, or his past relationships, they are a ‘perfect match’ on paper.
But what though? What’s on this paper that makes people so sure that they seem matched? All people have offered up so far is backgrounds or some such stuff and I’m sorry, I don’t think I’m being an idealist when I say that crap is insignificant. Why should people be suited because they went to similar schools or grew up around similar amounts of money. We’re human beings and connection with someone goes so far beyond all that superficiality.
Well, back-ground and education, work and looks wise, yes, they look good and kind of “well matched” together 🙂 Cumby could have done better, but also a lot worse, too, I think. Anyway, I am glad he has found someone he loves who is not an off-the-shelf-model kind of a girl either. These are their first outings together, and the interest in them is more than intense, so I kind of understand that awkwardness between them.
Well, like I said, matching people on ‘background and education’ is a little antiquated and just rings of snobbery. A person’s value, spark for life and intelligence is not governed by where they brought up or how much money their parents had.

The interest in them isn’t really intense at all. The media are pushing it and pushing it and he’s fuelled that, not only with the public announcement in the first place but all the subsequent interview he’s given on the subject.
The only reason for level of discussion on here about it is because of the weird behaviour that’s been going on. If it were a regular relationship, as he’s had before, yeah of course there would be loads of interest but not near this level.
Sorry, I don’t buy for a second, that they look awkward because people are watching. Well of course people are, and nobody is expecting a show tune, just stand there and be yourselves and if they didn’t want to do it the they don’t have to do it. She’s choosing to walk the red carpets and pose for the press. Many partners skip that nonsense all together, so I don’t buy that she’s any in way reluctant whatsoever. She seems completely at ease.
Just look at their profiles. There are some very good shots from yesterday in Tumblr.
That’s how I feel I haven’t seen it my husband said it’s good but my feet go in another direction when I head towards the cinema. Too much. I hope he can sit quietly and work out more things to say when/if he wins awards. “Embarrassment of riches” is getting old.

And about how tense she was in the holding hand pic, I know it’s cold over there and Ms. Hunter was sleeveless, but I remember the one with Martin and Amanda on the red carpet in December I think it’s in Japan two years ago when it was also quite cold and he just held her.
Look at the jostling to get their hands together in the first picture; his hand looks really awkward and she again is trying to put hers on top. Holding hands should be a no brainer for even a new couple, not to mention a newly engaged one. I bet they really just don’t hold hands away from the media so they always look very out of sorts. They are also clearly having a power struggle and she is playing dirty by bringing it out in public. He needs to get rid of her ASAP before this harms his career.

Let me think… VFF, he walked, holding hands and guiding her, after arrival (and waited for her to be helped out of the car by a festival worker and actually walked with her. He also held hands, laughed, talked, and made actual eye contact with her at the Grey Goose winter party they attended (and walked the red carpet with her). At many of the red carpet events, the “stars” are let out on one side and the paps do their thing while their SOs or plus ones are helped out of the other, but most “stars” who are their with SOs tend to wait and walk with them after the pap moment at the car.

LOL! I have a photo on my work computer of a man trying to cross the border illegally into the US. He had been sewn into, using the same fabric, the upholstery of the back seat thinking the border agent wouldn’t look very hard. It didn’t work but it was a extraordinary effort. I was impressed.

What you are seeing is media manipulation at work. Good job PR, in raising ben’s profile, making sophie out to be ‘talented’, changing his image, and convincing people who aren’t paying attebtion that these two are completely smitten. I’m glad to see some of us know when we are being manipulated.
Note how she is almost universally being described as ‘gorgeous’. She wasn’t ‘gorgeous’ at the FO, hay fest, or any other public outing that she’s been at for the last decade. But all of a sudden when she’s his fiancee, it changes everything.

TBH, this broke my heart a little. I was fine with this enGAGment and her being at industry parties, but her being at the hobbit premiere just breaks my LotR fan heart.

Thankfully the photos I’m seeing are a solo carpet stroll. Last night was expected, since she’s so THEATRE, but today is/was/should be about the cast and the end of a massively amazing journey. The downplayed dress seemed appropriate, as was being background decoration.

Well,it’s very cold and December. The people she was with were wearing coats. She was taking a long walk along the red carpet so I guess she wanted to show off the latest dress she’s advertising.
It’s not standard to pose with SOs. Nobody has to do it. If you’re not into all that then you can skip it. She quite clearly is into it.

So, I do not run in the circles of women who can afford to own or have enough clout to borrow designer gowns. How does this work? If other people on the net are correct, she is wearing the Erdem green lace overlay Geeta Fil shirt dress gown thingy (not the right name of dress but you get the drift). When they became engaged, did BC’s people call Erdem and say “hey, have a fiancée and she needs to be clothed?” Because for three out of three public appearances, someone is indeed having a deal with someone.

Studios hire stylists for their stars and their SOs during promo. Stylists organize the dresses/jewelry/make-up and fashion houses pay stylists/stars to wear their designs. So, in reality, stars get money, not the other way around.
They also pay stars to attend the fashion shows. It’s very likely BC got paid to attend that Hugo Boss show, for example.
The only fashion house who doesn’t (allegedly) pay anyone is Chanel.

You are all wrong! It is not a PR scam. If it was, they would have been all over each other. Lupita and Jared were not married and they won Oscars. The real reason for this awkwardness is: BC was so embarrassed of the Elle interview about Sherlock because he was either, flirting with the interviewer or he was ready/or about to get some action that day *wink*. He decided that since he has been dating SH anyway, he rushed the engagement so people don‘t ask him a about violin fingers etc…. Questions about Sherlock violin fingers are more embarrassing when promoting a serious movie than engagement questions. If this engagement was not the talk of the town as it is now, Sherlock’s fingers would have been the main questions and I can just imagine that conversation on the red carpet. Although, I think that Irene Adler and Sherlock business is a subtle way for BC to tell us that he and Lara was at it at one time. HAHAHA! I dare you guys to tell that I am wrong! LOL.

Oh Lord, his expression says it all. He couldn’t look more angry and bitter if he tried. I think whatever deal he and/or his handlers made with SH is starting to unravel as we type. It’s not work related stress, it reads more like the telltale symptom of a toxic relationship…perhaps more than one, of a personal and professional nature. Ladies, I know the Mail is sh@t, but for me I loved seeing the fans dressed up as elves and the one man dressed as Sauron in the background. In the photo behind Orlando Bloom it looks like Sauron is reviewing his taxes or something (he’s obviously staring at signatures) and it makes my little LOTR heart swell.
Also, I’m going to make a side by side photo of Sodious since the London premiere of TIG to compare her shape. Personally, I think it looks like she might be carrying because she’s so slim and even when I google photos of her you can quite clearly see that she doesn’t have a tummy. However when I looked at the stairwell gifs it does seem her chest and waist is a little fuller.
But alas, I know I can’t trust anything with these two anymore so who knows, it’s like playing the lottery.
Those dresses would make anyone look bigger in the middle. Wouldn’t surprise me if she was wearing it for that purpose. Because, let’s face it, of you wanted to keep something like that quiet, you could just stay at home?
…or wear a loos fitting dresses like Keira did.
She has a small chest. Her tummy would be very visible compared. On side profile she’s completely flat. It’s only from the front, she looks thicker. Baby bumps don’t work like that (at least during the early months)
She wouldn’t stay home for all the tea in China. She has found a new vehicle to advance her career and she isn’t going to let go without a fight.
Sauron doing his taxes reminded me of LotR The Very Secret Diaries from years ago. Has anyone here read them? So, so funny. You can google them easily. Highly recommended.
You know what find weird about those Erdem dresses… if she was sponsored by them since TIG premier at LFF that means her on-going appearance has been planned since the beginning (pre-redcarpet appearance). Something must have come up as to why they weren’t photograph together during LFF. Perhaps she had a panic attack maybe? Or the timing of their appearance together was pushed back because Harvey kept changing the release dates for US premier?
I’m still on the pregnancy car tho. as well as showmance – Its the only thing that makes sense to me and why he can’t back out of this enGAGment no matter how miserable he is.
@Mikasa – I agree with the planned appearances part. Although the TIG NY was last minute, definitely.
The LFF was a miscalculation from PR. The dress was a loan and she was dressed to be photographed. They though tabloids would be all over her. But nobody cared, embarrassingly. The enGAGment was most likely last minute adjustment to fix the lack of press.
Someone said on one of the other thread that Keira was wearing Erdem, too. So my guess is that the Wicked Stepsister got Cinderella’s cast offs.

Erdem is a niche designer favored by Duchess Kate so I think there’s a swath of popularity for the designs in the UK, at least in the tony set. But while KK may wear one or two pieces, SH seems to be dressing in Erdem from the knickers out.
To be honest, BC looks to be in good spirits tonight. There’s a shot of him stepping out of his car looking very cheeky, where he’s sort of got his tongue between his teeth.
I starting to believe those stiff poses are done on purpose and not because he’s uncomfortable. Like , “hey, I’m a serious actor and I mean business. Look at TWIPT, I’m grown now.”
Doesn’t change the fact that they could be more affectionate.
His dead eyes aren’t purposely done. And they seem to be most prevalent when she’s around. It’s not about affection. There’s no warmth there at all. As for him seeming in ‘good spirits’, well I’m sure he’s not unaware that people are noticing the change in him. And the pics I’ve seen from tonight show the same blank eyes he’s had for weeks as far as I can tell.
ITA. And this time there’s no jet lag excuse. Poor man.

Maybe this is an example of SH’s “performance art” and she is supposed to act like an a÷$hole to the point that Ben cancels the engagement and asks for the ring. Then she faints.
I’m starting to think getting Karon et al a gift isn’t a bad idea lol. If there’s ever a PR team that needs some good scotch after an Oscar campaign, it’s this one.

that’s a woman with her back to the camera, and no i don’t think she was holding him back. he just didn’t go after her, which was the professional thing to do at that moment when the cameras are rolling.
i get the feeling that this is not the first time she’s been like this. just a gut feeling.

Sometimes I hate footage…they’re all edited out here or there, I watched all of the 3, the GMB, the ODE and the getty one, with all her pretentious smile, plus actually I don’t think he hates/dislike her, more or less some sort of friends imo, now I think he wants this to at least be a bit more convincing, but she only wants the attention, the flash, the camera. If you can’t give me the camera, then I’ll just go, business is just business, something like that.

Just totally wrong. Even if she didn’t like something Karon said, she shouldn’t have embarrassed him like that. She’s meant to be supporting him, not throwing tantrums in front of cameras and journalists like a spoilt child.
Sigh, that dress is one big honkin’ blah. She has the figure to wear a beautiful, form-fitting gown. And, as many others said here, they look like they just met and are posing together on the carpet. Not one single spark.
She looks like she’s dressed from some old brocade curtains. That or she’s just an extension of the red carpet…because she’s certainly not an extension of Benedict; they don’t seem to ever lean in towards each other. Benny may be trying but she’s keeping him at a distance, y’know because they are old school and traditional and respectable that way. pfff. I expected some spark or some adoring looks between them for a such new romance, let alone being newly engaged.
The first two dresses I wasn’t that upset over, but this one is horrid.

I am beginning to think that I would bet money that this is a setup and they will never marry. He looks too darn miserable and I don’t think its over the crazy fans.
My last post got lost. I really hope she’s not pregnant, so he can ditch Miss Prissy Pockets. She shows no love or appreciation for him or the trappings of his life. The more I see them together, the more it appears this relationship won’t work. And for being so posh, she can’t dress to save her life. He’s got millions of Cumberbunnies/bitches to choose from, he doesn’t have to settle for “degrees” of love. I hope he knows what he’s doing, always took him for a smart dude.
