‘Suicide Squad’ casting confirmed: Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Will Smith & more

You guys know I’m not a comic book person, right? Right. Then why is it that I spent way too much time last night debating with myself over the state of DC Comics and their film slate? It’s just that Marvel has sort of overwhelmed everything these days, right? But it’s not like DC Comics is mortally wounded or anything. They have some great properties… which they are currently running into the ground because of The Batfleck, maybe? Anyway, DC is still attempting to create some new Marvel-esque ensembles, which is why they announced the line-up for their Suicide Squad film. While some of the names are exciting, when you see the names all together… it seems random. Like they picked the names out of a hat.

Warner Bros has firmed Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie for its DC Comics villain team Suicide Squad, and has set Jared Leto to play The Joker, Jai Courtney to play Boomerang and Cara Delevingne to play Enchantress in the David Ayer-directed film. Smith plays Deadshot, Hardy Rick Flagg and Robbie Harley Quinn. Most of these were reported on. Not in the studio announcement is whether Jesse Eisenberg brings his Batman V Superman villain Lex Luthor to the DC cavalcade, as I’ve heard will happen.

Ayer, coming off Fury, is scripting and the studio set an August 5, 2016 release. Charles Roven is producing with Richard Suckle and Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are exec producers. Pic is a Dirty Dozen-type mission movie where a group of supervillains are brought together to tackle high-risk black ops missions for the government.

It’s Smith’s second superhero turn, if you count Hancock. It’s also his second pic with The Wolf Of Wall Street star Robbie, with whom he stars in the grifter tale Focus.

[From Deadline]

Most of these casting choices have been rumored before (Bedhead talked about the Leto reports last month), but DC just made the official line-up announcement yesterday. I’m pleased to see Margot Robbie getting so much work (I like her!), and Tom Hardy is always welcome anywhere, anytime. But Will Smith? Cara Delevingne? And Jared Leto as the Joker? What happened to Will Smith, man? He used to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world. And I’m genuinely worried about Leto’s version of the Joker. Sigh…so, should we feel sorry for DC Comics? Or are you genuinely excited that this film, with this casting line-up, is going to be made?

The Bloke! A bloke sighting! The Bloke!

    • Sixer says:

I was just thinking. The Bloke has a career to die for, doesn’t he? Mind you, I won’t be watching this one until it comes to Sky and the Sixlets make me.

I wish Cara would just go away.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’m just completely ignoring whatshername. Won’t even acknowledge her by typing her name. The Bloke definitely is carving out a nice, varied career for himself. Lots of blockbusters combined with excellent work in small things like “Locke,” which was one of the best acting performances I saw this year.

      • Sixer says:

        Locke was fab, wasn’t it?

I don’t mind The Bloke making comic book films – it’s not as though I’ll ever go and see them, so I can pretend he never did.

      • LadySlippers says:

‘Locke’ was not a run-of-the-mill movie. I loved it but my son wasn’t as nuts about it.

(And Ruth Wilson AND Andrew Scott were in it too!!!! *squee!!!*)

      • Lilacflowers says:

Ruth Wilson was fabulous in it. I wanted to pour her a glass of wine and give her a hug.

    • Kitten says:

I think we can all agree that The Bloke is too good for this nonsense. That being said: yay, The Bloke!

The casting of Cara just goes to show you that the embarrassingly underdeveloped female characters in these superhero franchises exist solely as eyecandy for the male audience. Casting always seems like an afterthought or like they just randomly chose the latest “it” girl.

  2. Amy Tennant says:

I’m a Harley Quinn fan, and I actually think Leto is perfect for the Joker. I’m meh on most of DC’s upcoming film properties, but I can’t wait for Suicide squad!

    • Elizabeth says:

I am BEYOND excited to see a Harley Quinn! It took way too long. I was so disappointed there wasn’t even a cameo or reference in TDK.

  3. memibee says:

I think leto was not a bad choice,Cara D in the other hand…

  4. Birdie says:

I think Jared Leto will be great as The Joker. I know nothing about comics, but I like the title Suicide Squad for some reason.

  5. Talie says:

Cara Delevingne is so clearly Harley — she resembles the comic book illustration completely. WTF?

  6. Mimz says:

Welll…. im a will smith fan and i loved Hancock so… im happy with his casting. I like tom and havent seen enough movies with Leto in but i think he will be great as a joker. The girls are ok…
    Hmm… thats all i got
    Hope it will be good!

  7. Amy Tennant says:

My dream casting for Harley was always Rachel McAdams.

  8. Froop says:

    Cara Delevingne? Really?

  9. Jaderu says:

I hope they gave a part to that cute doggy in Hardy’s arms.
Looks like an ewok. The doggy, not Hardy. Hardy looks like a stormtrooper that got lost and found his way into my bedroom and was so confused his clothes fell off and … sorry I drifted for a minute there.

Wil Smith and Cara Delevingne seem weird but the rest sounds great.

  10. BendyWindy says:

I don’t know anything about Suicide Squad, but I actually think Jared Leto sounds like an inspired choice to play the joker. Heath Ledger left some big shoes to fill, and I don’t expect Leto’s Joker to be as…enthralling? to watch as Heath’s, but I think he’ll do just fine.

    • Jaderu says:

I think so too. I’m sure Leto will probably put his own twist on the character, but it’s a given that it’s going to be put up against Ledger’s and be picked apart relentlessly.

  11. Josefa says:

I find all DC movies to be a bore and a half, but I’m legitimately excited for this one. Leto seems to be the most controversial choice, but I think he might pull it off. He’s very talented and hey, no one had much faith in Ledger when he was cast, either.

  12. Darkladi says:

The Bloke!!!!It’s even hotter knowing those tattoos are buried under the white button down.

  13. TTMuch says:

I would sincerely and seriously watch Tom Hardy pet that puppy for two hours in a theatre. Not a euphemism

  14. Chinoiserie says:

Cara Devigne and Margot Robbie seem to be getting good roles very fast. Robbie did get at least good reviews from Wolf of Wall Street.

  15. Greta says:

Lame of them to cast Tom Hardy. He was Bane about 5 minutes ago. Are there no other actors?

  16. lucy2 says:

I can’t muster up any excitement for this. I’m not much into comic book stuff either though.
I am happy to hear they’re finally doing a Wonder Woman movie, and Michelle McLaren is directing. She’s done some amazing work, so I hope it’s good.

  17. Ginger says:

I’m only here for Tom Hardy. 🙂

  18. Ashling says:

I read quite a few of the Suicide Squad comics. I am more excited about this one than B v S. I hope it is good, but it seems like a lot of ego and strong personalities in one movie. I wonder how the cast will all get along.

  19. Marianne says:

I think its kind of weird having Tom Hardy in there since he was already Bane….but whatever.

    • Kitten says:

It’s a testament to how incredibly versatile Hardy is as an actor.
Also, when he played Bane his face was obscured, so it’s not like his God-given face is the visage associated with that particular character.

    • nina says:

I think Hardy is a good actor, but I found his Bane ridiculous, not at all menacing. Maybe it was the terrible voice or the mask, but everytime he appeared, I burst out laughing lol.

  20. Alex says:

I’m never going to be ready for a new Joker so its nothing against Leto. I think he will bring a new twist its just I’m not interested lol. I feel bad for DC because they are just running in a distant second to marvel
and Cara? Really? Has she been in anything that proves she’s a capable actress? I mean I barely finds her interesting as a model…

  21. kri says:

Tom Hardy is…damn, he’s hot. I cannt believe the number of phenomenally talented actors we are seeing out of Britain. I mean, I can-it’s just fabulous that they are gettig so much work. He is amazing. “The Take” is getting another watch this weekend.

  22. Umilatte says:

I’m still holding my breath. Huge Harley fan, but I do not like Margot Robbie. I can’t even begin to picture Leto as the Joker. Hardy…I’ll take him as anything. He’s pretty much my whole excitement right now. I will ship Harley/Deadshot until my dying day (love the new 52) over her awful Joker obsession.

  23. magpie says:

I think Robbie is an excellent choice and her scenes with Leto are gonna be great. I think the biggest WTF is Will Smith here.

  24. Bridget says:

I think that if the new Batman v Superman movie bails that it won’t be because it was ruined by the Batfleck so much as the incredibly dour tone all the DC movies are taking. Why are they making their movies look like a chore to watch?

  25. Alexandra says:

Always happy to hear news about The Bloke. Not too displeased with the rest of the cast either, except Jai Courtney, who is a terrible actor. Gah, I have no idea why would anyone put him in such an ensemble.
