At one point, in the recent past, Gwyneth Paltrow owned a luxurious Tribeca penthouse. I’m not sure if she still has that place, but she did as of 2010 – the penthouse was even featured in Vogue, because of course it was. You can see some of the photos here. Well, maybe (??) Meryl Streep owns an apartment in the same Tribeca building. I mean, Meryl says that she lives in the same building as Gwyneth and I believe her, I just don’t know if it’s the same Tribeca building as the one featured in Vogue. Anyway, so Meryl and Goop are neighbors. And now Meryl owes Gwyneth a favor, because Meryl’s Thanksgiving was saved by Gwyneth’s amazing kitchen! God, Gwyneth is going to be smug about this story forever.
Holiday hero alert! Meryl Streep had a wonderful Thanksgiving with her family, thanks to a little help from her famous celebrity friend and neighbor Gwyneth Paltrow. Streep, 65, appeared on Live! With Kelly and Michael on Wednesday, Dec. 3, where she told the tale of how fellow Oscar winner Paltrow saved Thanksgiving.
“My oven didn’t work,” Streep recalled to Kelly Ripa. “I hate my oven! I hate it. You never hate your oven more than on Thanksgiving day when it won’t cook the turkey.”
The family cooked their turkey for “about 11 hours on low heat,” and only the white meat had cooked. The sides, however, were still raw and unprepared. “My brother was in charge of the cooking so I could blame it on him,” she joked.
Luckily, Streep received some neighborly love from a fellow superstar, who lives in her NYC building. “In my building is Gwyneth Paltrow,” said the August: Osage County actress. “She has the best oven I have ever seen in my life. So I e-mailed her, and they weren’t there.”
The Goop goddess, 42, gave Streep permission to enter her apartment and use her kitchen. “So I went over and I did all the sides in her oven,” she said. “And my brother was in charge of the turkey that would not cook.” Streep proudly added: “The sides were fantastic.”
Ripa, 44, who excitedly wanted more info on Paltrow’s Manhattan digs, asked Streep for more intel. “[My daughters] are all equally bad,” she said of Mamie, 31, Grace, 28, and Louisa, 23. Streep and husband of 36 years Don Gummar are also parents to Henry, 35. “They had to draw lots for who went with me, but it’s a beautiful beautiful place with the best oven I have ever seen in my life.”
As for how Streep let herself in? “The doorman let us in,” she revealed.
That is some exclusive celebrity club to be in, right? Meryl Streep emails Gwyneth on Thanksgiving, and Goop answered! And Goop told the doorman to let Meryl in. I’d still like to know the fate of the turkey though – it sounds like the damn thing never did cook properly. I know everyone has their turkey-cooking system, but I don’t think you’re supposed to cook a turkey on low heat for 11 hours, even if you have an amazing Goop oven. It’s not the oven’s fault! That’s just a bad way to cook a turkey. But yes, everything always comes up Goop! Goop will always have the best everything. She has the best oven. She has the best peelers. She has the best corkscrew. She has the best, always!

I wouldn’t eat anything that incubated in Goop’s oven.
@PUNKYMOMMA: Agreed.
Oh, there are so many bad jokes that I could do on that comment, PunkyMomma. but I will just leave it at this-who cooks a g-d turkey for 11 hours?? Was she turning a spit? Ooooh, GOOP. Erg.
I’ll bet the turkey tasted smug
Clearly, CLEARLY Goop has the *best* flat iron. Give that thing a rest would ya Goopy girl?
She doesn’t have the best face, best marriage, best voice ..c’mon she’s not THAT great
11 hours? What a waste of gas/power.
On the picture together, Meryl looks way better than Gwyneth.
Doesn’t she? She looks fresh and natural, these women truly don’t realise all these botox and fillers make them either look oily and older or wax figures.
She looks like Tracy Anderson!
I though it was tracy anderson, only taller, in the pic of Meryl and Goop. I swear to God!
Serious question, how has Gwyneth earned this kind of money for serious amounts of real estate?
She married a musican who made a lot of money touring.
Aaargh. Shes had endorsement deals since the 90s. Plus she comes from money. With or without Chris she would have been in that stratosphere.
I think she meant that her brother tried to cook the turkey in her broken oven for 11 hours. From the sounds of it..they didn’t eat turkey this year.
Exactly. She clearly says they cooked the turkey in her oven while she cooked all the sides in Gwyneth’s kitchen. Funny story!
Goop’s luxury apartment looks so cold and uninviting. Everything is white. Only a rich person could afford to live in an all white apartment from the walls to the furniture to the carpeting. She must have had housekeepers everyday scrubbing down the place to keep it looking pristine. I’m sure Meryl’s apartment looks much cozier and like its actually lived in by a family. Anyway, just another story of the lives of the rich and famous living in their luxury apartments and cooking Thanksgiving dinner in their luxury ovens. It would be nice to be a millionaire celebrity, wouldn’t it? Goop is gonna use this story forever. Being linked to Meryl in any way is a privilege for almost anyone in Hollywood.
I hate to WK for Gwyneth, but maybe her apartment doesn’t generally look QUITE so un-lived-in. It’s clearly been staged for the photo shoot. Regardless, I agree that the all-white thing is pretty hilarious. I hope her housekeepers are paid well.
It reminds me of that Arctic ice palace from Superman II.
I went to someone’s house for Thanksgiving one year who used that method – low heat for hours and hours and the turkey was very pink and raw. The hostess didn’t seem to notice or understand that it was unsafe to eat. Very awkward. People just nibbled around the sides because they seemed done.
The same thing happened at my in-laws…the turkey was so under cooked a skilled vet could have saved it.
Lol
LOL
gross. undercooked meat is such bad news, i don’t know why people eat it.
Is that goopy in the second photo? Doesn’t look right. Sure do love to hate the goop.
I agree – did she get her eyes done?
The photo’s from 2011. This must be from the time when she used botox and realized it was a really bad look for her.
I was really missing Goop’s related stories. It’s good to have her back.
Goop took the slogan, on the boards behind her, literally. Lots of ‘shining on’ happening in the forehead region.
Ha, was coming to say just that.
The very best way to cook a turkey is to deep-fry it. But it’s extremely dangerous to do this indoors lest you set the stove afire and burn your house down. Every Thanksgiving in the U.S. at least 15 homes are incinerated beyond repair when some nitwit decides to deep-fry a turkey on top of the kitchen stove.
The best way is to brine and roast it. Deep fried turkey is greasy and gross. Sorry.
Not if you fry it correctly. It’s crispy outside and just moist enough inside and delicious all over.
I’m sorry I said that, Janet. I’ve had it several times and I don’t care for it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t like it.
Actually, I’m turkeyed out. Same ole same ole every Thanksgiving in one form or another. Boring. Next year I’m fixing lasagna.
I brined a turkey earlier this year for three days (salt and lemons), and my Dad loved it, because he didn’t like dry Turkey. My mom too.
Goop can be smug all she wants about Streep using her oven…still doesn’t change the fact that she is unlikable.
Sure you did!
Dear Meryl, the way to cook a turkey is to 1) start the night before Thanksgiving by making a marinade and injecting it into the bird (a beer base marinade is best); 2) put that sucker in the fridge and let it soak up all that yummy brew; 3) in the morning, get a big old fryer and wheel that sucker out on your balcony; 4) get several gallons of peanut oil and drop it in the fryer, heat it up; 5) open a bottle of wine and get some liquid courage for if the bird ain’t thawed all the way through, well hold on to your helmet cause it might just blow up; 5) once you are sure there is no explosion, relax and let that thing cook for about 45 minutes to an hour, maybe a little longer, maybe not; 6) take it out of the fryer and enjoy!
Edit that to add: fry your turkey outside on a flat concrete surface because if you try to fry it on top of the kitchen stove you stand an excellent chance of burning your house down. The damage is done when the turkey gets lowered into the hot oil, the oil sloshes out of the pot and hits the flame, and kaboom, you have an inferno in your kitchen. If you do it right, you will end up with a deliciously succulent turkey and your kitchen intact.
I was once on an email distribution list that included Meryl Streep’s email address. The sender of the email evidently didnt know how to BCC. I pointed that out and then at the sender’s request, deleted Meryl’s email address from my computer. I probably should have kept it – not that I ever would email her crazy cat pictures or anything, but it would have been nice to know that I COULD.
You did the right thing by deleting the address, but somehow I think Meryl would find some complete stranger sending her crazy pictures of a cat pretty amusing. She has a great sense of humor.
“Pieces of April” for The rich and famous.
Ha ha! Nice reference.
Not gonna lie – I’d be smug about that story too!
Haha, jep!
I know that everyone likes to hate on Goop and of course she did this favour for Meryl… but it was nice of her to let Meryl use her oven. Meryl is right to be grateful.
In undergrad, I throw a thanksgiving dinner for all my friends who weren’t going home(12 people) and my oven broke 2 hours into cooking the turkey. I had to knock on several neighbours doors and most people were away because it was a building filled with students. I finally found neighbours who were at home but not cooking and they let me use their oven. I then invited them to dinner. I was/am externally grateful to them for welcoming me into their home.
Nice of Goop and glad it worked out for Meryl. On another note, is anyone else weirded out by that 11 hours turkey cooking technique?
What kind of oven does GOOP have that is so wonderful? Of course, everything she has is the best.
Probably a $25,000 Aga or something like that.
Meryl Streep is lovely. Does she have a movie coming out soon?
Yes Into the Woods is coming out at Christmas.
Ha! I wonder if Meryl has been at her place to hang out before the oven incident. Doubt it!
Did Meryl bake “Jail Bird cake” or “Conscious Coupling Pie” in Goop’s oven?
this is a huvane bros concoction if i ever heard one.
ps good to see all the face work goop had done in 2010-2011 eventually settled.
All this made me think of was how unused so many of these big fancy celebrities homes are. Goop mostly lived in London and now is in LA. Does the NY place just sit empty 90% of the year?
The NY Times had a story on super-expensive real estate. Something like half of the most expensive apartments in New York’s most expensive neighborhoods are empty most of the year. The designer Valentino has a bajillion-dollar pad on Fifth Avenue that he occupies in May and November. The other ten months he stays in one of his other houses around the world.
Haha, Goop stashes all her dirty dishes in the oven!
There weren’t any other neighbors she could ask?
Why would she? Goop obviously has state of the art appliances. I’d go to Goop exclusively anytime. To bake my turkey or borrow a cup of organic fair trade virgin heirloom super rare turbinado sugar or salt expelled from baby tears.
*standing ovation* “salt expelled from baby tears” Bwahahahahaha!
*is evil*
Meryl looks fantastic! Her skin is glowing and she looks very young and natural. Goop on the other hand, looks leathery
I’m not sure how most people cook their Turkey ,I avoid anything to do with their preperation and always find the meat a bit dry and bland but I once had a ‘deep fried’ turkey prepared by an American friend. The system of cooking looked positively life threatening not the sort of thing you would attempt in a NY apartment, but the bird was cooked in 30mins and tasted wonderful.
A question to American readers……do people ever kill themselves or on lookers preparing ‘deep fried turkey’.
I literally had to fall over on the bed laughing when I heard this one! Two of my friends called me today and mentioned this and we all laughed our heads off at this little tidbit! I grew up around her as a child til my 20’s in NYC, my other friend lived near her (several houses) in London (and told me years ago she and Chris were kaput as of like 2008) AND my other friend now lives near her in in Brentwood. (And yes, I am jealous of their houses now – my only envy spot 🙂 but at least they actually worked hard for decades and are talented, nice and very generous unlike Gwynnie! So we have all known her as neighbors for decades and she is THE WORST neighbor you could ever imagine! Seriously. My two friends get along with everyone, and so do I, always seeing the best in people. YET, none of us can stand Gwyneth who is on our list of (literally) between all three of us of about 4 to 5 people on planet we have seen not a speck of decency in. And this is too rich! She has always irritated her neighbors by double parking in front of them illegally and hogging their spaces, doing major construction with utter disregard to them – not even letting them know, doesn’t even ever talk to any of them anywhere (except one PR pathetic attempt in Brentwood where kids sold lemonade or such type situation rarely). And totally, egotistically disregarded them again when she sent the whole neighborhood into a frenzy when she had OBAMA over and insisted event at her house, etc. The list goes on forever – truly! While Chris tries to shield paps from kids, she secretly has paps informed to be around her (and pretends to be avoiding them LOL). ALWAYS when she is with them and Chris, which is IMO the worst of all – using her own kids like that! She is the least” neighborly” person ever in every way. Even in the very the high end RE areas she lives in and expensive schools kids go to (where parents all loathe her too when they RARELY see her 🙂 the people aren’t good enough for her royal snootiness to deign to say hello to or allow the to speak to her directly. It has always been Chris that has had to smooth things over with all the neighbors, who genuinely like him everywhere. He is the one that talks to folks, stops to chat, takes kids to school, apologizes for Gwyneth, still (for kids sake.) Chris was BTW livid, understandably with GP for hosting the President at the house where his kids, are half the time. He works so hard to shelter them and keep them safe when at their home(s) for safety reasons as well as their privacy. He has even made nice with the paps just so they will leave the kids alone near their houses. THEN she goes, and with the whole media uproar about the neighbors furious at her, basically lets the entire world and every wacko out there know exactly where they live! (And even though he doesn’t live there, he and the kids were the ones who apologized because Goopers had the streets blocked off for many hours with no alternate route in or out of their houses! Even the President’s people would have preferred another venue, but GP insisted had to be her prized home (asset). My friend in that area of Brentwood went over to Goopers (yes, landmark gorgeous famed architecturally house – the only thing I do envy about Goopers sigh) early on the day of the President’s visit, with some of the other neighborhood Moms to try to find out what time the streets would be shut down as they had to get out to go pick up their kids later and get them home etc. So they finally get to the door, were told she was unavailable in her office…at the exact time she happened to stroll right by them, heard what they were saying nicely to one of her staffers – just about their being able to get their children home safely, and still refused to acknowledge them! Oh and the clincher was she also was chugging from a huge glass of of red wine (bottle right there next to her) in one hand… and yep, wait for it….a cigarette in the other hand as she waved them away dismissively to get back to her glam squad! (And this was early in the day too 🙂 Gotta love it! No so NOT a good neighbor, but in typical GOOP mode she OF COURSE had Meryl Streep let into her condo! And the prior poster above commenting about how Huvane was behind it being PR’ed, was quite right am guessing, and I know that was going through that cunning little mind of Gwyneth’s too believe me! Probably, what she was most thankful for this past Holiday. (So sad for kids, heard Chris is trying to get some alone time with them soon in UK without her and she is insisting on going – really horrid woman again using kids.) This is prob too late for many any to see, and haven’t posted much lately but after hearing all this today, just could not resist :-). Went straight to Celebitchy 🙂 Classic GOOP! “Gwyneth the Good Neighbor” (to Meryl only!) Oh well, hope you guys are all well and enjoying the Holiday Season!!!! Take care!
