Prince William makes a passive-aggressive swipe at Kate’s ‘nightmare hair’

130106PCN_DuchessRoyal37

Well, this is bad. This is going to end up with Duchess Kate making another passive-aggressive comment about Prince William’s bald dome. Apparently, Prince William made a stop by Centrepoint this morning and he said something terrible (!!) about Kate’s hair (!!). First, let me just say: good on William for his continued support of Centrepoint. I actually believe that William legitimately cares about homeless and poor youth, and Centrepoint has always been one of the few charities that he’s consistently supported year after year. I wish this was his “centerpiece” advocacy rather than poaching, you know? No disrespect to anti-poaching efforts, but William isn’t the best spokesperson for your cause. As for William’s insult to Kate’s hair… here it is in context:

Luscious, long and glossy are all adjectives frequently deployed to describe the Duchess of Cambridge’s hair. Now the Duke of Cambridge has added another one – nightmare. William made the joke about Kate’s locks during a private visit to the homeless charity Centrepoint.

Chatting to a trainee hairdresser named Angel during a mentoring session, the second-in-line to the throne quipped that she should try styling Kate’s ‘nightmare hair’.

The moment came during a visit to Centrepoint’s health and wellbeing centre in Soho, central London, for a breakfast. In addition to the encounter with Angel, the Duke also met business volunteers and young homeless people being helped by the charity. While it might not always meet with William’s approval, the Duchess is famous for her glossy locks, which are tended by hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker.

Ms Cook Tucker was among the entourage that travelled with the Cambridges when they flew to New York earlier this month. She is also widely believed to be responsible for Kate’s increasingly glamorous style, including the succession of chic up-do’s worn in recent months.

[From The Daily Mail]

The Mail says “glamour” and I say “meh.” Kate is doing more things right than wrong when it comes to her style these days, but as we always say with Kate… the bar is set pretty low. We consider an event a “success” when she manages to avoid a Marilyn Moment. As for William saying Kate has “nightmare hair” – I take this to mean that Kate is simply consumed with her hair, so much so that she spends more time on hair maintenance and hair styling (for those rare public events) than anything else. And William just finds it all so exhausting. It’s actually a typical “take my wife, please!” kind of husband-thing to say. What’s he going to talk about next, her shoe closet?

… The other possibility is that William is also being sort of passive-aggressive and he’s trying to tell us something about Kate’s Wiglet/Weave and that disappearing “scar” right where her extensions would go. What do you think?

      “…………..Quote……………
The Duke told a trainee hairdresser that she would be welcome to help out with his wife’s grooming because other stylists dreaded the job.
Angel, 20, who did not want her surname to be published, said: “He was asking us all about Centrepoint – how we were doing with our course and all that sort of stuff.
“Then he suddenly asked whether I could help out with Kate’s hair, because it’s such a nightmare. I didn’t think he was being serious at first – I couldn’t believe it. “…………………Quote
      …..”…………………………..
      Lol LMAO

Kate’s hair is her pride and glory ,well besides PGtips George.
I wonder if she gave William an eye-roll when she read the papers.
      LOL Haha
      It made me laugh.

William’s comments remind me of Charles in the early days , he does soud like he sometimes doesn’t think before he says things.

Like with her clothes The Yellow outfit or was it Green?…on Australian -NZ tour, he said something about her clothes being too bright and there were a few more comments he made on the tour.
Kate told a lady near her, on the tour William doesn’t like the dress, or like the color …something like that….

If she cut her hair he’d probably complain too.

I recall CHARLES putting his hand on Diana’s waist during the engagement walk and saying something ..it sent into a inner tailspin….. Which we found out later.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Oh and she picked at his hair in Australis or NZ, at the sheep sheering visit.
Maybe they play tit for tat.

      • Lucky Charm says:

It was her yellow dress, he thought she looked like a banana. And he thought the green was too bright.

  3. Loopy says:

I never followed the royals much until i started reading this site and it appears more and more obvious to me how snappy William must be to Kate behind closed doors. i.e the day they showed Prince George to the worlds press and he told her ‘stand up straight’ and that is in public,i guess it was a slip up.

    • missy says:

I didn’t see that. I think he always looks hunched over though and homely as all get out. yuk!

      • Loopy says:

Look around the 10:10 min mark he says ‘stand up straight’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZutmqaiGRrk

      • wolfpup says:

Loopy, I looked. This is not riding off into the sunset with a prince who “honors and cherishes, and loves her more than anything in the world” ( Grimm’s, Snow White).

Life requires our own witness, and no dashing prince will do. She is hampered by letting things happen to her, rather than participating: it’s the rare flash when we see who she is. Otherwise, she appears to be letting others run the show.

The clip did not show her adjusting her body by his command – she just looked muddled. Poor thing, she can’t even be snippy!

    • anne_000 says:

She has poor posture. He knows that because of this particular occasion, these photos and videos will be seen worldwide. She’s not very bright. I think she sometimes forgets to think about posture while out in public in front of photographers so he has to remind her. He knows by experience on how to deal with getting good images.

      • hunter says:

Yes, if he wasn’t rude about it it’s not the worst thing to say, it’s actually helpful so when the pictures are finalized everybody is happy.

      • ArtHistorian says:

It is actually a bit hard to constantly think about posture. It needs a lot of physical training until it becomes automatic. I have a tendency to poor posture as well but I have training to help me with it. However, it hasn’t become second nature yet. Her not thinking about it constantly doesn’t mean she’s not very bright.

      • anne_000 says:

@ArtHistorian – I’m not saying that because she’s not constantly thinking about it that makes her not very bright. I’m saying she’s not very bright because of all her actions, not just this one.

      • Lizzy says:

I could barely make out the actual words ‘stand up straight’. Not totally convinced that’s what he was saying. Maybe she complained about her posture in pics and he was trying to be helpful…im sure she had some good drugs running through her.

The first wedding me and the man went to together, I was horrified how I looked in pics because my nose is pointy… it looks fine straight on and in person but the profile view was horrible. And I was in the wedding party so the photographer was going to town when we weren’t paying attention. Six years later, he is totally trained… if he sees someone going for a profile pic, he will swing me around the dance floor or tell me ‘turn left!’ or ‘turn right!’ it has kind of become a fun game but mostly he doesn’t want to hear me bitch about the picks. Is it trivial? Of course. But its my thing.

      • Flower says:

She needs Princess Mary (of Denmark) lessons. Before her marriage she had so-so posture and wanted to look more regal because she would soon be attending official functions with the eyes of the words (Denmark and Australia at least) on her. So she went to a finishing school for a few weeks it did wonders and she has a wonderful posture now even when crouching down to hug children in towering high heels I think there might be photos or a brief video on line of her ‘posture lessons’ , it really is as simple as shoulders back -head up.

My favourite photos of Mary in the past year:

        http://royalista.com/6844/an-angel-ill-with-cancer-steals-marys-heart/

If you’re tired of the same old Kate pix this is an excellent site for photos of all the other glamorous Euro Royals ….. makes one realize how little work Kate does (pregnancy leave aside).

That photo ofCP Mary is amazing. Tearful. Her face really says it all.

      • ArtHistorian says:

I really like the lace scarf/veil Charlene is wearing at the Sacred Heart.

      • notasugarhere says:

Flower, that isn’t exactly what happened. Soon after she and Fred met, she enrolled at a place called StarMakers in fall 2000. (He went back to Denmark to the woman he was dating and kept dating her for months after he and Mary met). StarMakers was where she started to learn things like better posture. It was done then, not years later after their engagement.

I understand she may have been self-conscious about her middle class roots. She didn’t go to cotillion. Now there are places that teach etiquette for business, but her choice/option at the time was StarMakers.

During an interview with Fred, she denied she went to StarMakers. The company didn’t appreciate that, so they put video of her in one of their classes on their site, along with Mary’s StarMakers photos. I don’t think she’s wrong to want to improve her knowledge of etiquette or deportment, she was just silly to deny that she’d done it. As someone wrote on another thread, you meet the same people on the way down that you stepped on on the way up.

    • may23 says:

Did he really say that in an unpleasant manner? I watched the video and it looked like he was more or less trying to guide her in front of the press. I’m not saying you’re wrong, actually, just trying to see what I missed here.

    • Megan says:

Perhaps he was just making a joke about the comments about her posture to lighten the mood. Have you seen the images of that moment taken from above? They were facing a massive crowd of press and fans. I can see how a crowd might make a new mother holding her baby a bit jumpy.

    • rianic says:

I have lordosis (swayback), as well as a slight scoliosis (I’m probably the only one who noticed my uneven shoulders). I also have a anteversion in my right hip. As a teen I had to do PT to learn correct posture and exercises I’ve told my husband and close friends that if they see me letting off my postire, to tell me.

None of my problems are “serious” a we didn’t even recognize them until I hit puberty and hit a growth spurt

Maybe she’s asked him to help her keep an eye on posture. I tend to slouch when I’m tired, especially since I now have kids on my hips!

    • Carrie says:

Haha public or not I would’ve been like ‘excuse me, did you just give birth? No? Shut your pie hole.’

    • Lucky Charm says:

I thought he said “come this way”. But she sure does play with her hair a lot.

  4. Diana says:

Meh. I don’t like them, and I’m sure there is trouble in paradise, but this just reads like a throwaway comment to me. My husband jokes about my hair and make-up obsession, too. I joke about his on-going love affairs with football and “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”. That’s just marriage.

    • Okie says:

Agreed; my husband and I do the same.

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA, it reads to me like a comment any guy would make if he thinks his wife takes too long to get dressed, do her hair, etc. No big deal.

    • Kelly says:

I have thick (quarter) Italian hair and my husband’s has been thinning for awhile. Anyway, anyone with thick hair knows it sheds. My husband CALLED ME AT WORK telling me to contact the newspapers! he’s going to be famous! they all need to know that he just found Big Foot in the drain of our shower! Hamming bastard.

      • Okie says:

Lol! My husband told me “sure, we can get a dog. It can’t possibly shed more than you.”

      • Kelly says:

Ha! Hey, as long as you get to get a dog! I feel bad more for my parents, having to deal with both me and my sister and our ridiculous amounts of crazy shedding hair.

      • Diana says:

        @ Kelly: Hahaha, that’s awesome!

@ Okie: That’s exactly something my husband would say, too! Love thick hair, but I hate the shedding part. I feel like I spend a ton of time picking stray hair off of everything, lol.

    • Jordan says:

I agree. He was just being a guy! They all like the finished product, just not the hour it takes to get there.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

I would say that if he had not criticized her choice of dress a couple of days on the Australia on tour. She mentioned to a complete stranger William didn’t like her dress.
Also he said something else to her on the tour, that made me think he nitpicks at times.

I think he has a bit of Charles nitpicky-ness in him and not thinking before he says things sometimes.

Not that I think they are fighting over it. They looked fine on the Royal lunch journey.

  5. Okie says:

I don’t think it’s intentionally passive-aggressive; I think it’s a joke that’s not funny. I have very thick hair and when it gets to a certain length, if my layers aren’t freshened, it looks absolutely ridiculous (bushes out right around the ears and no styling will really help it without a cut). I also shed more than a corgi and have crazy bedhead, which my husband refers to as a “lion’s mane.” William might be referring to Kate’s unstyled, thick hair … which might be unruly and take a great amount of time to style, especially compared to his own, um, simple style.

  6. RobN says:

Sounds like trying to find something to chitchat about, to me. It’s an easy conversation device, you style hair, my wife’s hair is strangely famous, let’s talk about it for two minutes till we can both get out of here.

It’s pretty much how I get through my husband’s company Christmas party.

    • Mean Hannah says:

It sounds like chitchat to me, too, combined with a bit of humor about the effort it takes to style her hair. I take no time with my hair, which is thick and mostly straight. My husband has curly hair and he spends more on haircuts and products to tame the curls – and more time – and I jokingly refer to it as “production.”

    • vauvert says:

Just that. I think if my husband had to talk to a hairdresser who is not into sports, global affairs or something that interests him, he would quickly bring up my unruly, long, curly, needs a lot of fussing hair. No shade intended. Maybe it would not sound intelligent in retrospect but what do you talk about in two minutes to people you have nothing in common with?

      • wolfpup says:

One can talk about anything but your wife (unless it is flattering). Men need to think that they have to work a little bit to get laid (romance…). Poor Kate has to do it by decree!

    • bluhare says:

I agree. I think Kate’s got wavy hair that frizzes in humidity. It’s not like Britain isn’t wet so unless she gets it styled to within an inch of its life it will frizz. I remember the photos from their SE Asia tour; it goes wild.

I can totally relate (and sympathize) with her on this one!

      • Lizzy says:

This exactly!! It seems like she started to experiment with blowouts during the time of the break up. Part of her ‘transformation’ was definitely regular blowouts. Her natural hair is kind of frizzy and curly. I actually thought she had done some sort of permanent straightening/smoothing process until her topless France picks came out. She was clearly at ease with her natural hair and letting the girls out to play. Curly haired girls want straight hair, straight haired girls want bombshell waves. The struggle is real!

  7. Megan says:

Sounds like an attempt at deadpan British humor.

    • Luciana says:

      This!!!!

    • ArtHistorian says:

Of course deadpan humour is notoriously difficult to catch/interpret when it is in print (or for strangers in conversation), just like irony. It can very easily be misunderstood.

  8. Susan says:

I’m not the biggest WK sympathizer on the planet….buuuuuut…..we bash them for being stodgy and boring and uptight…and then when they show signs of normalcy we are critical. My husband complains about my hair too but it isn’t grounds for divorce. Yet. Haha.

    • Nono lipservice please! says:

The point is that PRINCE William is supposed to be inspiring and motivation to support charitable causes. Attending a homeless charity and talking about Kate’s hair isn’t going to do that.

      • lucy2 says:

Except he was talking with one of the teens the center helps, who is studying to be a hairdresser there. I think he was just trying to connect with her on something she was interested in.

      • Vampi says:

…but he was talking to a hairdresser, had just met her and had a very brief time to chat with her so…..yeah, I give him a pass… and actually think it makes him look good and relateable. (and we all know he needs some of THAT! Lol!)

      • wolfpup says:

Too bad that he couldn’t think of something nice to say about her hair, or her hairdresser – that might have been more appropriate, and make their romance more believable.

Willy is almost obtuse about his faux pau’s, (yet he easily turns around, to criticize something personal about Kate).

  9. Jaded says:

When she hasn’t spent hours and hours getting said hair styled to the max with wiglets and bump-its and pinned-in extensions and sausage curls, she’s got very normal straight, not too thick hair. She seems to be obsessed with it – like it’s a soothing mechanism or something to hide behind. So I can well imagine it’s a nightmare to get it looking the way she prefers. Add to that the length, which is so college girl I can’t believe it and flies around her face and sticks to her lippy in public appearances, William has every right to take a jab at it. It seems to be the most important, time-consuming thing in her life (besides shopping….).

    • Dany says:

IMO that´s William´s way of joking or at least what he thinks people want to hear and find funny. He does the same when it comes to his child. He always talks about how difficult George is. William isn´t charming or humorous so he tries to be funny with such stuff.

I think Kate´s hair is part of her armour. She´s bad at small talk and meeting strangers. She is visibly nervous and seems directionless every single time. All her extreme hand gestures and tense, poor posture show how nervous she is. That´s more than unfortunate for someone with her “job”.
So it doesn´t surprise me that she is obsessed with her hair and eyeliner. It´s her comfort zone and armour againt the world. She hides behind all that hair in her face, her racoon eyes and overloaded make-up are her mask. IMO that´s why she is so resistant to advice when it comes to hair, eyeliner and her dresses which look all the same. She needs it because she controls her armour. That gives her protection and it is likely the only thing in her life she can control.

    • Deedee says:

Agreed on all points, except one. Kate’s hair is very wavy and frizzy in its natural state. You have to find pap photos from the beach or photos from her adolescence to see it without her usual blowout session. It would be nice if William balanced these little digs on her with some really thoughtful compliments once in a while. And some PDA that’s not just a “direct Kate to the next spot” hand on the back.

Or they like taking the pi** out of each other. Some couples are like that, especially when they’ve been together years….I think it’s funny.

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ok, Sixer is going to be SO proud of me, because I think he was just joking in a funny, dry British way that couples over there like to do to show affection. He was just teasing. Right? Did I finally get it right?

  12. Celeste says:

She probably just tells him that she has “nightmare hair” to justify spending the money to get a professional blowout every other day. Because seriously, what would he know about hair? He hasn’t had it for years.

  13. maddelina says:

My husband complains about my hair as well. It’s long and very thick like Kate’s. Takes forever to dry.

    • wolfpup says:

      Private jokes are private.

      • wolfpup says:

I wouldn’t be happy about my husband sharing with another woman, anything nightmare about me. Just because he is a prince is not good excuse, for public marital rudeness. I hope that he apologized to her (do princes apologize?), and made it all better (a trip to Mustique?).

      • maddelina says:

It’s not a big deal. I make jokes about my husband’s love of his boat. It’s more playful than anything. I don’t consider it rude at all.

      • FLORC says:

        Wolfpup
Well, before their last breakup it was said Kate confronted William about he’s open playing around on her. She demanded he stop being so public about that because it made her look or feel cheap. He said something to the terms of Don’t you know who I am aka the prince card. So, maybe princes don’t have to say they’re sorry.

I think this isn’t that big of a deal. Especially with how William appeared to be openly furious with Kate by the helicopter on the NZ/AUS tour or after the sailing race. She appeared to cower to his temper.

      • notasugarhere says:

FLORC I can never tell with those helicopter photos. Is he just yelling to be heard above the engines and she’s doing her usual “look up at William and pay attention because he is the center of the universe”. If you look at them in sequence, the shot by the helicopter was taken before they walked across the lawn and her skirt blew up, so he isn’t yelling at her about that.

      • FLORC says:

        Nota
That photo and brief video showed Kate looking at the ground and avoiding eye contact as William stood over her in a dominant stance. His face looked strained to convey a message and a bit angry. It appeared text book description of 1 person angry at another. It may not have been the no undergarments, but he was mad about something.
It looked worse than William taking Kate aside after she gave him the “L” on the forehead for losing the sailing race. I thought that was innocent and a cute expression of their private life, but William burst that bubble in what looks like scolding her.

      • notasugarhere says:

Thanks, FLORC. I hadn’t seen video, just some stills. I don’t doubt that he could get angry and lecture her. There are stories about him mocking her and her brainpower (or lack thereof), so we know he isn’t a one to take the high road. KM has stated he’s “different in private” so is this public behavior and acting out (against her) a result of his hatred of being a public figure?

I think he is controlled by his emotions, like his mother, but he has no logic to temper them. It would be difficult to learn proper royal behavior from him, because you’d never know which version of William you’d get. Is he reprimanding her for acting “unroyal” with the L-sign or is he reprimanding her for showing him up during the yacht race? Was he angry during the Jubilee flotilla because he has to take part in a royal event, angry because she doesn’t know royal etiquette so she tries to walk ahead of Camilla, or angry because she just whacked him with an umbrella? All of the above?

He kept her away from his family and the royal scene for a decade. Now he refuses advice from courtiers who could teach her the basics. SMH

      • FLORC says:

        Nota
Having to explain to anyone that someone who appears very stiff and often cruel to you infront of others that they’re different at home in private sounds like excuses made for an abuser. I never got that.
I’m sure he does have a temper having never been raised to be accountable.
Whatever William thinks he’s doing for the good of him and his family is only hurting them. George might end up fearing those he would rule. Kate will never understand what she’s doing wrong in the eyes of the public. All because William has them isolated from criticism that could lead to improvement. SMH indeed!

  14. Penelope says:

Meh, that’s what husbands and wives do–they mock each other about silly things like hair and makeup and whatnot. My fiancee used to call me Steven Tyler because I’d occasionally wear more than one scarf at a time. LOL

    • wolfpup says:

Does a man tease a lady in front of other people: with strangers, (or just friends) – how about the whole world? Afterword, would a lady then feel romantic toward this man, for the personal, now global digs?

  15. Citresse says:

I think William likes to joke about Kate. Remember he called her a banana when she wore a yellow dress in Australia.

    • bondbabe says:

I agree. I understand “discussing” her attire, hair, makeup, etc., BUT it does seem to be obsessive negativity rants tearing her down, which, in turn, then makes me sympathetic to her—someone I don’t even know.

    • minx says:

I must be naive but I didn’t know there was antipathy towards her, or them as a couple. I guess I thought they were fairly well liked.

    • M says:

I agree! I thought they were well liked until I read the comments here during their US visit. As a gossip site, we come here to gossip (hair, clothes, etc) but I was taken back by the intensity of some of the negative comments & personal attacks on her. Like bondbabe, it just made me feel protective & like her more.

    • wolfpup says:

There are other sites that have posters who are very friendly toward this couple. One cannot change minds by personal digs and gripes – go for ideas with substantive evidence: that will work for most people, if that is your intention.

I think that all of us wanted a fairy tale… I am positive that we all wish happiness for them – it’s normal to be happy when we see others smile. However, I do not see this site as being one designed to be read by the couple – this site is for fun and a myriad of gossip.

While there are some here that are very negative about the Cambridges the royaloonies here do not support that.. but we still get lumped in with them. Not fair.

Ok. Maybe not “mean” as the word, but same message sent. Not saying people are using that exact word.
And I agree. Snark in moderation. I guess my point was more that these threads rogarding royalty is far from the worst here. If 1 was great and 10 was hellish it would be a 4 as far as commenter content. IMO anyways.

I don’t understand where the “creepy” comes in. That word seems very out of place if you’re trying to say what you’ve clarified you’re trying to say.

And I was repsonding more to those responding to your comment and not directly to yours.

      • Megan says:

A lot of my clients remarket to this site, so I hate to recommend another, but HRHduchesskate has much more pro-Kate discussions for someone looking for a more positive take on the royals.

      • notasugarhere says:

Hmm. My big freedom of speech diatribe disappeared. Bottom line, this is Kaiser’s site, she does her research (she doesn’t make this stuff up), and she gets to say what she wants. We are free to comment. We are free to stay or leave.

If you’re interested in learning more about royals, you could try The Royal Forums. Lots of history, no negativity allowed. And Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor for clothing discussions.

This site is well mixed. Those pro Kate and anti Kate sites will not entertain anything short of total praise or disgust. You’re entering a forum where no one will challenge your thoughts or facts as stated there. Maybe a few exceptions because of a few posters, but if they’re gone it’s chaos.

  18. Nono lipservice please! says:

PRINCE William is supposed to motivate and inspire charitable deeds. He is expected to connect charity and society and make doing charity look good and desirable. It is actually what he is getting paid for. Talking about Kate’s hair is not going to achieve that.

Now he is in the News for talking about Kate’s hair. Not good. He should be in the News for supporting some charity. Imagine the same happened to Mr or Mrs Obama or any other head of state or any other celebrity. Being in the news for their hair instead of being in the news for their politics / work / charities. Even JLo and Maria Carey or Brangelina or any other A-lister wouldn’t like to be in the news for their hair instead of for their work / charity.

    • maddelina says:

Are you blaming William or the news?

    • FLORC says:

      Lipservice
I think you’re incorrect on what William is doing and why. He’s not paid for charity work. He’s funded because of his bloodline. He and the BRF could not work and still have their money/perks. The charity work gives their existence meaning and prevents an uprising.
He doesn’t have to do anything, really. It wouldn’t look good if he did though.
Ad he spoke of Kate’s hair in a passing comment. A passing comment that the people are getting caught up on instead of what he was doing there. Both parties can take blame, but less for William. IMO.

And Michelle Obama certainly was in the press for her hair. That was huge news for some time. Her style, cut, bangs trauma, straightening, dyes. All points where her hair was top discussion over what substance she was trying to bring to the table. As well as her workout routines and clothes.
The trouble here is part press and public. The press gives what the public that will buy those publications read. And that’s physical appearance.

      • ArtHistorian says:

That is something that really irks me because it is a constant undercurrent for women in the public eye – their looks, hair and clothes are under constant scrutiny (regardless of their work and intelligence) in a way that we don’t see with men in similar positions. It is a cultural script that can be quite pernicious. Even worse is the tendency to put down women with comments on their age, looks and sexual history. It is damaging to us all and I just want it to stop.

      • FLORC says:

        ArtHistorian
Agree Fully! It needs to stop.
Didn’t Hillary Clinton address that before? That she was so sick of the press ignoring the content of her platform and speeches in favor of her pants suits and hair style? Ugh.
Women are more than dolls to be dressed up and judged.

And agree. We get the rotten end on relationship history too. Double standard.

      • ArtHistorian says:

One of the worst examples I have seen in the Danish press was some years ago where the former government had a female minister of justice. She’s an attractive blonde lady with a generous bosom – so the press dubbed her “the talking chest”!

The current minister of culture was also derided in the press as “the handbag”. However, her party took that image and made it their own, so it became a sort of trinute to this no-nonsense lady who coducts her politics with loads of integrity.

  19. FLORC says:

I thought this would be worse. I take it to mean maybe William thinks it’s hilarious and intrusive how many people and how much time goes into Kate’s hair. Not really shade.

And that Scar. I’m shocked that wasn’t covered more!
    1. The scar never really vanished. It just wasn’t as visible as it was in that events shot.
    2. Kate’s PR Office released a statement saying it was a scar from some kind of childhood major surgery. On her head!? Major operations at the part of your head is a big deal. This was never elaborated on.
Ofcourse, this was also that period of time when KP would release a statement for every little thing rumored or said regarding Kate. Thing’s that shouldn’t have been addressed and just left to fade away.

I still want to know what kind of procedure Kate needed on her cranium as a child. Anyone know by chance?

    • MinnFinn says:

A doctor consulted by Daily Mail said the shape of the scar and its location on her head indicated they probably removed a birth mark/freckley thing.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Just because the scar story was true, which I believe she does have a scar, doesn’t mean that she also wasn’t wearing extensions.

The extensions story came DIRECTLY from her London hairdresser/ …he gave the Daily Mail the 411 on how they did her hair and the story was up for about two or three hours when suddenly Kate had the office reprint the story saying it was a scar.

I definately think she wears hair extensions and add ons and I believe her scar is also true.

She has a scar ,but she also wears extensions. Imo

      • Lizzy says:

        @someonestolemyname

My cousin had a cancerous mole removed from her head at around 7 years old. It was DEEP. They actually used the word ‘scoop’ regarding how much tissue was removed, to ensure all remaining tissue was healthy. It was scary and serious. And she has an identical scar on the back of her scalp. Both Catherine and Pippa seem to have beauty marks so maybe it was something similar?

      • FLORC says:

        Interesting Someonestole
I tend to believe those stories. That was the way Kate’s pr was functioning. Last moment changes and as if someone there was taking things personally. And pr pros that work for others don’t take things personally. Their employer does.

And yea. She wears hair enhancers. University to early marriage, to now her hair grows and shrinks so greatly. Too greatly to blame on anything else except false hair.

Regarding the scar. It could have been a birthmark. I’ve had friends had those removed in the same area. It was cosmetic though since hair grew out of the mole (meaning not cancer). And generally cosmetic procedures like that and in that area aren’t done on children. There’s risk for vanity. And having seen pictures of Kate as a child I can’t see there ever being a scar that had no hair growth. Meaning if it is a scar and not part of a major surgery it was for vanity reasons. And could Kate’s parents at that time afford a cosmetic procecure?

Seems like this scar story should have been ignored and allowed to fade from thought rather than address it and raise even more questions. Bad pr.

      • FLORC says:

        Lizzy
        Just saw your comment.
If Kate or anyone in their family had a birthmark that had characteristics falling in line with melanoma I doubt they would sun bath as much as they have.
And having lots of beauty marks is just a skin mutation that people without cancer and with cancer get.
Not lack of hair growth, changes in size shape, and color changes are signs your mole is abnormal and should be looked at.

And if it was a cancer scar with Kate i’m sure it would have been brought up. During that time her pr was struggling to get people to accept her. Cancer would have tugged at ome sympathetic heart strings.

  20. Lucky Charm says:

I don’t think he meant anything negative about Kate’s “nightmare hair”, but I DO think she has nightmare posture! No slouching – stand up straight, shoulders back, chest out!!! (Said in my mother’s voice. Which is why I’ve always gotten compliments on my posture considering that I’m a tall person.)

  21. UESider says:

Oh yeah, I think it’s a harmless joke, but I don’t doubt her hair actually takes a lot of work to style. All of the ladies in my family have a very similar texture–thick, crazy wavy-not-quite-curls and the second there’s an ounce of humidity in the air, all bets are off. You could definitely see her hair rebelling during their Malaysia tour: http://www2.pictures.stylebistro.com/gi/Kate+Middleton+Dangle+Earrings+Gold+Dangle+hAN5wBEznYGl.jpg

I’ve always thought her sausage curls were mostly because her hair holds a curl better than it does straight. Or at least has less of a chance to frizz out.

    • Vampi says:

Call me crazy but I love the look of her hair there!

    • Someonestolemyname says:

And curly, wavy hair with a few extra extensions added in ,is time consuming to deal with and style, which I believe she has.

    • Lucky Charm says:

@ Vampi – then I’m crazy right along with you! Her hair looks gorgeous in that photo. I would love to have curls, but with my stick straight hair that’s one advantage I have with humidity, I guess, lol!

      • hannah says:

No , you don’t want to have that hair . Within minutes hair like that will look like it has never seen a hair brush and to make matters worse if you try to brush it , it takes hour because of the the knots in it .

      • FLORC says:

Spray in conditioners are great for that. Even no tangle stuff for kids after the pool. It sits lightly on your hair so you still get volume and tangles are gone in 1 stroke of the brush. Also great in the winter when hair gets dry and static.

  22. may23 says:

Nah, it sounds more like a joke. Obviously it takes a lot of effort to style her hair and keep it looking the way it does, but I think Wills loves it.

  23. Lisa Danielle says:

I don’t think this comment is bad in itself but considering how much time (and how much of Charles’ money) Kate spends on getting blowouts three times a week, she must already be insecure about her hair. Plus, William really needs to learn to balance out his negative jokes with some sort of positive comments. It doesn’t seem to be as bad with Kate but with how often he says that George is unbearable and Harry is dumb, some positivity could be nice.

  24. Paloma says:

I think he’s heard Kate make the comment; unfortunately, that’s not something you should pass along, but, all in all, harmless. I think her hair is gorgeous, but mine would be, too, if I had a hair stylist follow me around.

  25. Qatar2 says:

I managed to get (relatively) upclose to Will and Kate today as they were leaving Buckingham Palace. I was about 5 feet from the car, maximum. I was shocked by how stunning Kate is in person. I am a loyal Celebitchy reader and see lots of comments about how her pics are airbrushed, she’s wigletted and eyelinered to the max, and all that jazz, but you guys, she is seriously pretty in person! And I wasn’t all royalmatized (the royal equivalent of dickmatized?) and starstruck – she really is just so much prettier than I expected! Also, it was really lovely to see the crowd’s reaction as they realized it was her and Will – a big cheer from the crowd and lots of smiles and waves.

    • FLORC says:

We have had photos here of Kate upclose and taken by untouched photos. As well as her official portrait. That is how Kate looks. I’ve seen her too and disagree with you. You might find it stunning. Her fans certainly were upset with her portrait saying the artist was trying to make her look ugly. It’s in the eye of the beholder. End of the day.

    • Megan says:

Qatar2 – how fun!!!! Hope you got pics!

    • maddelina says:

I’ve heard people say numerous times that she is much prettier in person. She seems to be doing lots of Royal Engagements. People on here need to give her a break. She has a toddler at home and another on the way. She has help, so what? She’s a working Mom.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

I heard just the opposite from a person who saw her up close in NYC at one event. Said she did not look good in person and this person was standing within a few feet of her.

    • carol says:

why does that happen to some people – why are some people more attractive in person than in photographs?

      • ArtHistorian says:

Some people are just not very photogenic – sadly, I’m one of them. Besides, attractivess is not just about looks. Rather, it has a lot to do with personality and charisma. Photos don’t capture how a person moves, talks adn interacts with people.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Correction: I’m NOT one of the photogenic people – I forgot a word.

  26. Olenna says:

Make of it what you will, but here’s the royal reporter for Vanity Fair’s take on the Duchess’ hair (WARNING–lots of sugar):
    http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2014/12/kate-middleton-new-york-visit-what-i-learned

    • ArtHistorian says:

“Her ponytail made me want to be a better person” LOL!

      • FLORC says:

That author was tripping over themselves to compliment anything and everything. The comments calling them out were hilarious.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

That article was dripping with sugar, I could barely finish it.

      • ArtHistorian says:

I actually think that there were some interesting things going on in that article. I’ve mentioned the use of hyperbole in strawman arguments in another thread. Here, the author uses hyperbole in a mocking way – he’s not mocking Kate but rather the ridiculous attention to her hair in the press.

He does seem enchanted by her but he also points out something very important: that her public persona is so bland/blank that you can project just about anything on to her according to your bias and fantasies. I actually think that Kate has a lot more personality and intelligence than she lets the public see, so the question is: is she deliberately fashioning this bland and slightly empty public persona? And if that is so, why? However, there is also a danger in this approach because fashioning an ultra bland public persona also makes it very difficult to control the conversation about her image.

      • FLORC says:

        ArtHistorian
I agree Kate has oodles more personality and fashion. This is seen most often when she’s in a casual setting, private time, or sports. I love her personal style. Mostly because it’s mine. Preppy, collar shirts. Lots of browns. And hair in a ponytail. What happens when she’s in the public I can’t understand. Her fashion sense is tragic.
And when she is active and sporty she has fine conversations. Although, I think it ends there. Her intelligence seems limited. Mostly because she has no desire to learn. It certainly appears that if she wanted to improve her knowledge or public speaking she would do so.

      • Vava says:

Kate doesn’t seem to be very intelligent.

      • ArtHistorian says:

        Vava,

Kate got into St. Andrews and she graduated with a good degree – that certainly requires a good measure of intelligence, any university degree does! So she wasn’t a brilliant student but I can assure you that not many are. Yes, she studied art history, so did I – and it is NOT a fluffy walk in the park (a statement that I’ve often seen on Kate sites/threads), there’s a lot of theory.

I simply think that it is presumptious to assume that Kate isn’t very intelligent from her public performances and her public persona. As I noted above it looks to me like she and/or the Palace has shaped her public persona to be as harmless and inoffensive as possible – with the attendant result of yawn-worthy blandness. I do think that she doesn’t excell when it comes to small talk and interaction with strangers but that doesn’t indicate lack of intelligence, it rather seems that she’s unexperienced and uncomfortable with this aspect of her new life – it has often struck me how akward and insecure she appears at many official functions (those that doesn’t involve sport). I suspect this is because she lacks work and life experience – hence her abysmal conversations skills and her poor speech-making. Regarding her wardrobe malfunctions: I just think she lacks common sense – that still doesn’t mean she’s not intelligent, I’ve known plenty of brilliant and highly intelligent people who utterly lack common sense.
Keep in mind that “intelligence” signifies a set of mental skills – and that doesn’t necessarily translate into social skills or empathy. Plus you have to exercise your faculties regularly, otherwise they stagnate.

I mentioned above how the blankness of her public persona allows for an unhampered projection – the “sugars” project their fantasies onto her, likewise the “vinegars” project their dislikes onto her. Frankly, no one person is an amalgam of only stellar qualities or only negative qualities. Let’s face it, no one here really knows her and I think that it is important to keep in mind that politicians, celebrities and royals keep up public personas that are only limited reflections of their private selves. And a public persona is not necessarily about lying, though PR is involved, the press is also complicit in contributing to a public persona in a way that can’t really be controlled by the person in question.

  27. idsmith says:

My husband would call my hair a nightmare too. Because I complain about it all the time. I’m sure Kate complains about her hair to her husband. It’s normal. My husband is bald and can’t believe it takes 3 hours to get my hair colored. My stylist kind of dreads my appointments because I have a lot of hair and it takes 2 batches of color to complete it. I joke about my hair too. I can imagine it’s worse being a royal who has to have it “done” , styled, curled, flat ironed and fussed over every single day. It would be a nightmare.

  28. Meg says:

does he forget the mean horrible things people said about his mother’s looks when she was alive? there’s so much pressure for royal women to look good. the press tear them apart. let him experience that and then see how much time he puts into his looks before going to an event. we say kate is too thin, if she was a healthy weight she’d get torn apart

    • FLORC says:

She’s a healthy weight now and she gets only compliments on how a little weight gain makes her look softer and prettier. Where are you getting it that she’d get torn apart? She’s never been a bigger girl. I think it would be tough for her to gain to be unhealthy.

  29. OTHER RENEE says:

I think she’s obsessed with her hair because apparently the entire world is.

    • wolfpup says:

The entire world is necessarily obsessed: most likely it is the editors and corporations who advertise in them, making stories to make money. I believe that many other things about the royal couple, would interest people. There’s really not much else to talk about. They are so private, that to me, it seems as if Kate is gagged.

Of course a mocking remark about her hair is no big deal, unless it happens on a regular basis. Will can improve in this area…gentlemen lessons, perhaps.

  30. Vava says:

I interpreted it as a sarcastic joke and nothing more than that.

That hair would be too high maintenance for me. I wonder if she’ll ever get tired of fussing with it. Between her hair and her legs, those are the things that most often get praise. Certainly not her hard work. She’s pretty much taken a step back in time.

    • FLORC says:

      Fair point.
She needs to do more if people are going to accept her and even just to call her Catherine.

This gets me. She’s working. She’d engaged. She’s doing something well here. And still she’s only praised for being pretty and what she wore/how her hair is styled is a major talking point.
And I point the finger largely at her fans. They praise her appearance instead of her accomplishments. Too many comments are only addresses how pretty they think she is. Nothing else. It’s just an observation.

    • BlueeJay says:

Um….I think everyone is very confused as to what her job is. Since when did royalty become important to charity. Her job for those who do not understand royalty is to have children and keep the line going. She is not there for charity, or the needs of others, or anything like that. I appreciate that people on this site try to make it appear that this is her job, but it is not. Getting pregnant is her job. Sorry. And by the way she is doing a great job of that in case you have not noticed.

      • wolfpup says:

I find that marking a human being, as only good for reproduction, offensive…maybe you were just joking!

      • FLORC says:

It’s also to represent the monarchy well around the world. It’s an image to uphold.
It’s not to just breed and heir and spare. She is there to bring in goodwill.

Maybe wolfpup is correct and you’re joking. Sounds like sarcasm. It’s tough to believe people believe that.

      • notasugarhere says:

“Her job for those who do not understand royalty is to have children and keep the line going.” Gee, thanks for edjumakatin’ all of the intelligent, highly-educated folks on here who have been watching and studying royalty for decades. Incredibly misogynistic comment btw. It is (almost) 2015. Middleton has a job to do – represent the monarchy. Breeding is not her job. If they did not have children, the crown would pass to the next in line. As has happened multiple times over centuries. AH, didn’t something like this happen in Denmark to make Margrethe queen?

Her Majesty Queen Fabiola of Belgium, who passed recently, was a wonderful queen. Did loads of charity work, much of it in ahead-of-her-time areas. They were not able to have children. Instead, they helped raise their nephew Philippe (now King Philippe) because his parents were/are a nightmare. Based on her current attitude and workload, Middleton will never hold a candle to Fabiola – no matter how many children she has.

      • Vava says:

There is a long list of people in the line of succession and so no, her ‘job’ is not to reproduce. The “line” would continue whether or not the wife of the heir to the heir ever had any offspring.

      • FLORC says:

And the current QE2 wouldn’t be so if the heir had children. She’s the child of the spare.
Still, it is her purpose and duty to “breed” a heir and spare with the 2nd in line though not literally the only reason she’s in the role she’s in.

        Nota
I think it’ unfair to compare Kate to any other royals. There were different expectations and values that Kate never had to meet. I would love to see her turn it around. It’s never too late to start! I just doubt it. Something major would have to happen.

      • notasugarhere says:

In this case, I was pointing out that you do not have to have children to be a good working royal, to rebut the posters idea that all KM has to do is bear children.

FLORC, don’t agree with you on that one. She is a working royal, she’ll be compared to other working royals.

      • FLORC says:

        Nota
I meant she wans’t raised to work. And even as an adult wasn’t taught to be an adult. Her parents would care for her forever. Other married in royals had careers. Kate is just not in their league. In that way it’s unfair. She’s mentally not there. Maybe because she chose to live that way?
We can disagree on this. I think we both agree on the main points. I just can’t judge her on value as a working royal when she’s not on par with working royals and what they know/do.

I agree with the other point. She can work. Remember all that talk about how much Kate wanted to work and do events when she was said to be sick (but later to find out she was ok enough to shop for hours daily). I think she only knows enough to support an image. Not to evolve.

      • ArtHistorian says:

        Nota,

Margrethe was made CP in 1953 by a public referendum, so she is in a sense “elected”. Until then King Frederik’s brother Knud was the heir apparent. However, he was deemed unfit by many and that’s why the law was changed from exclusive male primogenture to a modifed version, meaning that the oldest daughter would inherit if the monarch didn’t have sons. Just before Prince Christian’s birth the law was altered again so the firstborn regardless of gender inherits.

      • notasugarhere says:

Thank you, AH. I thought hers was an indirect route to the throne.

FLORC, she will be compared to other consorts, as William will be compared to Felipe, Willem-Alexander, etc. (even though heir-to-heir he is close to their ages and could reign at the same times they do). And W&K will be found lacking.

Other consorts married in ages 26 – 32. KM had just as much time to prepare as they did, more as she had 10 years. She wasted a decade of her life partying, vacationing, and shopping. You can give her a pass but I’m not simply because precious doesn’t know what it means to work. She’s had 4 years since the engagement and she’s still barely working or learning from her mistakes. The expectations have been lowered too far for her already. As long as those expectations are kept that low, she will fail to evolve or improve.

  31. maeliz says:

It would be a dream to have hair like hers. I had long, thick, pretty hair as a teenager. Medicine has made it thin over the years. My boyfriend would never ever make a little joke about it because he knows it upsets me. Kate is lucky to have stylist whenever she needs them

  32. HoustonGrl says:

Her hair is only a nightmare because she tries to make it something it’s not: colored; a blow out/straightened/flattened, then curled, plus extensions. It must take two or three hours every time she has a photo-op. Her natural hair is really nice, IMO: http://www.fashionlady.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/gallery_big_kate-middleton-natural-hair-texture.jpg
