Sienna Miller will replace Emma Stone as Sally in Cabaret: good choice?

Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller’s career resurgence continues. She’s talked a lot about how directors take her more seriously since she dumped her tabloid persona. Sienna has several movies in the can, and now she’ll be hitting Broadway. For real! The Roundabout Theater Co. announced Sienna as Emma Stone’s replacement in Cabaret. Sienna’s “messy” energy feels perfect for Sally Bowles. A few years ago (on a catty day), I may have said she was Sally Bowles. Here are the details:

The last Sally Bowles has been found.

Sienna Miller will star alongside Alan Cumming’s Emcee for the final six weeks of Roundabout Theatre Company’s hit revival of Cabaret on Broadway, replacing current headliner Emma Stone (who herself replaced the revival’s original star Michelle Williams).

Miller takes over the role of Sally Bowles on Feb. 17. (Stone’s last day is Feb. 15.) She’ll appear in the Studio 54 production through the show’s final performance on March 29.

It’s a return to the Roundabout for Miller, who made her Broadway debut in the company’s production of After Miss Julie in 2009. The actress is also on screen currently in both American Sniper and Foxcatcher.

This is obviously a good career move for Sienna. She’ll be the last Sally for this Cabaret run and be able to leave a lasting impression. I’ve never heard Sienna sing (she did reportedly sing in an audition), but Sally Bowles isn’t supposed to be a great singer. I wonder if Tom Sturridge will come to NYC for these six weeks. Their relationship seems very drama free, which is unusual for Sienna. Maybe she really has changed. I suspect she’s simply cleaned up her act in public.

Here’s a photo of Sienna with her, Marlowe, in New York City this week. Marlowe’s working on her own little Sturridge bun. Such a cutie.

I LOVE that dress. Except for the weird boob thing. A flower?

    That’s all I got

  2. LAK says:

Despite her messy personal life, she’s always received good reviews for her theatre work.

    • Miss T says:

She’s received positive reviews for her West End work. She got mixed/negative reviews for her broadway debut in After Miss Julie. I do think she’s a good actress from the films I’ve seen her in so I wish her goodluck.

      • Betti says:

I seem to recall she received mixed reviews for all her stage appearances – from the catty to meh!

She’s an average actress who got lucky.

  3. QQ says:

Seems like a More Likely Move/better fit than Emma to be honest ??

  4. Jegede says:

    Adorable kid.
It’s fascinating to me how girls often end up looking like their fathers.

Though odd she appears to have brown eyes when both her parents have blue.

    • Prim says:

Could be nonsense, but I have read that children look most like their fathers at birth. The idea being that their fathers get a rush of bonding oxytocin and stick around to raise them.

      • Jegede says:

I’m not saying children resembling their parents is odd.

I’m talking specifically about the father-daughter dynamic, that is actually very common.

      • lirko says:

Right, because if the baby resembles the father, the father would be more inclined to provide for him or her. It is so interesting how humans have evolved.

      • Jegede says:

        @lirko – Huh?
That wasn’t my point at all.
But it’s the weekend, and for me there are more important things to engage into than this nonsense.

      • MB says:

        Jegede – ease up, ffs.
Lirko was validating your comment by citing biological and evolutionary reasoning for it. There is really no need to be so rude.

She is a good actress, so why not.

I think of the three Sallys in the revival, Miller’s the most logical choice. I may go back to see her.

I saw Williams, who I love, and didn’t like her. She was doing a very strange accent which didn’t work and was playing the downfall of the character from the start. Also, the choreographer could have helped her with her arms. She didn’t seem to know what to do with them during some of the numbers. She did have a strong singing voice and was fully committed to the role, but I think she could have used more direction.

I wouldn’t spend good money to watch this woman set herself on fire and walk away…she has no talent. Zip, zero. The only thing she has ever been good at is capitalizing on scandal.

    Great choice. Love her!

I know Goodbye to Berlin has Sally Bowles as a 19-year-old, but I’ve never thought the role plays well with a young actress – the addiction, the desperation, etc., just play so much better (imho) with an older actress who can add “washed up” and “last chance” to the other elements of the character. For me, Emma Stone was way too young to be Sally Bowles. Sienna Miller is still too young to play Sally, but at least she’s somewhat older. Anyone else see Natasha Richardson in the role? Now SHE was phenomenal.

Give me Frances McDormand as Sally Bowles and THAT is a production I’d make an effort to get to.

As I say – I know this is against what the actual book says. But to me, a 19-year-old has too much chance for redemption, which my ideal Sally wouldn’t.
