For some reason Bill Cosby is still being paid to do standup gigs, and for some reason there are people willing to see him. At a venue in Kitchener, Ontario Canada last night, Cosby made a “joke” to a woman heading to the bar that she should be careful not to drink around him. Because it’s so funny to mock the over 25 women who have come forward with remarkably similar stories of being drugged and raped by Cosby. ET has the best coverage of this story, which includes tweets from people at the show and video footage of the dozens of protestors outside. One man was escorted out of the theater for heckling Cosby and calling him a rapist. Here’s more, thanks to ET:
Protesters attempted to shut down Bill Cosby’s Canada shows while he reportedly made a joke about his sexual abuse allegations during his Thursday performance.
ET Canada captured the protesters blocking the entrance to the Centre In The Square venue in Kitchener where Cosby’s show took place.
“Obviously any big change requires all kinds of voices, all kinds of action,” protest organizer Melanie Baker said. “This is the one we chose.”
Inside the venue, Cosby stuck to his routine and received a standing ovation, despite the ruckus outside.
During Thursday’s performance, several reports claim that the 77-year-old comedian made light of his recent sexual abuse allegations after he called out a woman who told him she was going to get a drink during his performance. He reportedly responded, saying, “You have to be careful about drinking around me.”
Deadline reports that the audience gasped at the joke and then applauded. Two men were also reportedly escorted out of the performance after yelling, “We don’t love you, Bill. You’re a rapist. I’m being ejected because you’re a rapist.”
Cosby then insisted the audience not acknowledge the outburst, saying, “No, no stop.”
Following his Canada performance, Cosby released a statement (via NBC News), saying, “Dear Fans: One outburst but over 2600 loyal, patient and courageous fans enjoyed the most wonderful medicine that exist for human-kind. Laughter. I thank you, the theatre staff (Budweiser Gardens), the event organizers and the London, ON Community for your continued honor and support. I’m Far From Finished.”
I really appreciate that ET focused their coverage on the protestors and the people working to bring awareness to Cosby’s crimes. Cosby’s “joke,” and his follow up statement were awful. He’s despicable, but of course we’ve known that for some time. Also, by referencing laughter as “medicine” he seems to be further mocking his victims, many of whom claim that he drugged them under the guise of offering medicine. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but that’s what came to mind.
CNN reports that an alternate event was held in Kitchener last night to raise money for sexual assault victims. It was called “Voices Carry,” and organizers called it “a good opportunity for the community to do something positive. They felt a need to respond and this was a good way to do it. This was a peaceful alternative.”
I’m not going to cover all the back and forth with celebrities supporting and denouncing Cosby. I think the voices of the victims should carry more weight. The protestors also deserve so much credit, and I know they will show up to Cosby’s performances in the coming months. He’s performing again in Canada tonight and then he has 18 performances scheduled through June. So far, only four out of 22 scheduled performances have been canceled, according to Ticketmaster.

He has enough $ to just go away forever right? Does he NEED to keep doing stand up?
He’s going to do it because he won’t accept defeat on this. He’s gotten away with it for so long, there’s no way his brain can comprehend this new reality.
Especially since he’s getting standing ovations whenever he performs and people are laughing at his jokes. I just have a sick feeling this is all going to go away and he will continue to get away with it.
Maybe he doesn’t have as much money as we think…paying off victims and buying rape drugs can’t be cheap!
It’s pure ego at this point, and thumbing his nose at the victims and the public who has turned against him. I imagine he sees it as strength and pride, but I think, or at least hope, that most people see it as arrogance and are even more disgusted with him now.
He has very quickly gone from someone I admired to someone I loathe. His behavior is vile. Notice he hasn’t come out right and explained or tried to defend himself. He’s just been digging up dirt and joking about it while having his people question the (MULTIPLE) women’s integrity. Vile.
He thinks he can do what he’s always done – bluff, “charm,” joke, bully, ridicule, deny – it worked for all of these years, so he thinks he’s untouchable. He sickens me. And WTF is with these people going to see him and applauding him?
Has Jill Scott weighed in on this?
Hmmmm..
Yeah this guy shows a nauseating level of arrogance.
If you were accused of crimes you didn’t commit, would you really be JOKING about it?
This man is the worst-callous, egotistical and–I don’t GAF what anyone says–GUILTY as sin.
I agree with everything you wrote, GNAT.
What a creep. I can’t believe people pay money to see him.
You are the weakest link Bill, goodbye!!
Cosby might think that was funny, but I find it very disrespectful.
I think it’s beyond disrespectful, it’s just utterly despicable. Even just reading the headline made my stomach flip. My repulsion is physical now, too.
+1000
I’d add in vile and evil as well. There are just no words for the fact he is joking about it and people are giving him standing ovations for it. I don’t know who I hate more right now – Cosby or the morons who give him cheers.
“Despicable” is too kind.
What Esmom said times a thousand.
Agree.
It’s mocking rape. Even if he was innocent — lololololol — it still would be beyond inappropriate.
Actually, his doing this should prove he DID do it. Cocky.
I can’t even look at his evil face.
Hopefully he lives out the rest of his life on the fringes of show business. He will always have some ignorant, twisted fans but the widespread acclaim he craves is gone forever.
Is he blind in that one eye? Cataracts? The dude is a predator. I can’t believe he has nearly the money he tries to appear to have if he’s still out there pushing. Time to boycott venues who host these opportunities for victim blame and ridicule.
He is so F*cking Gross for that
What a ass. Sexual assault is hilarious isn’t Bill?? People are sick.
Good Gawd!!!!!!
The deeper the hole he digs, the harder he’ll fall. And he can take Woody and Roman with him.
In the interests of accurate reporting, it was at a venue in LONDON, ONTARIO, not Kitchener. http://www.lfpress.com/2015/01/08/comedian-bill-cosby-takes-stage-at-budwesier-gardens-in-london
Thank you, I was just going to sneak in and bring that up…. my hometown will not be only known as the birthplace of the Biebs….. *cringe*
go F yourself, old man.
oh, I mean…go drug yourself and THEN F yourself, old man.
+1,000,000,000
I’ll second that, Jonesy.
I can’t believe people are still paying to see this sick SOB.
For the billionth time since all this started coming out, I’m remembering the words of Richard Pryor (by way of Eddie Murphy): “Tell Bill I said to have a Coke and a smile and STFU.” God, this man is vile.
Also, the top photo is another example of Cosby’s hypocrisy. Isn’t this the guy who lectures young black men about pulling their pants up? Though judging by what we’ve learned about him in the past few months, he’s always had a problem keeping his pants up…
oh, that was one of my FAVE Eddie Murphy bits. Cosby was mad about all of the “filth and foul” that Murphy put out during his stand up and Pryor OWNED him with that comeback.
The same type of people who support Cosby are the same type of people who support Michael Jackson and Roman Polanski.
Just creepy. I guess on top of his legacy of drugging and raping dozens of women is his going on a ‘comedy tour’ of making fun of his victims and making money while sycophants applaud him for it.
There is a segment of the population that I think just likes to be contrary, for lack of a better word. Regardless of facts or accusations, they hop on board to support someone they think is being vilified – even if it’s rightly so. I suspect many of them are the type who treat others very poorly themselves, and then feel victimized when no one likes them.
Mainly white sycophants, I’m betting.
Pathetic A..hole.
…and on a more positive note, what an awesome name for a domestic violence charity. I still crank it and sing at the top of my lungs to “Voices Carry” whenever I come across it. Love that they’re holding competing events wherever Cosby performs, too. Let’s hope that’s a trend that continues and that the media will cover it.
I want to know which celebrities are actually supporting him though.
He should totally keep doing this stuff so that when there is a trial (http://documents.gawker.com/judy-huth-v-bill-cosby-1666030538) , they can play this kind of awfulness for a jury to consider when awarding damages.
i didn’t think of that. At least theres one good thing that can come out of his pathetic and tasteless “joke”.
What a PIG!!!!!
I KNOW what all these women are saying about him is true, because I’ve been through it, and it was EXACTLY the same scenario…not with Bill Cosby, of course. It damaged me even more than I realized at the time.
Seconding Steph – this event was in LONDON, Ontario.
The show on Wednesday which was reported yesterday was in Kitchener – NOT Toronto.
Also, you`ll notice in the bottom of the release it mentions London, ON.
This makes me want to vomit.
Where are his lawyers? Regardless of their guilt or innocence, a person facing accusations like this should NOT joke about them.
Aaah, what it is to be a sociopath! How much easier your life could be, to have no guilt, but vast resources of deception.
I’ve been to London, ON. Heck, I even liked London, ON. I’m glad to hear about protestors.
I know i often think this as well. THen I would never feel bad about all the horrible things you read in the news or see on TV because I would only care about myself and not be capable of empathy. Although strangely, sociopaths tend to obsessively worry about being perceived as being at a ‘higher level’ than others and crave authority over others. So there’s that downside!
We need to be petitioning the justice system to remove the statute of limitations on sexual crimes.
Far too often victims of a sexual crime need a healing process before finding the strength to come forward. Our society has put such a negative connotation on the victim, that often it is only the thought of others suffering the same due to silence that motivates a victim to expose the crime.
All to often these things happen to minors and they need someone to be their advocate or not much comes of accusations.
For both of these reasons I believe that all of this anger & frustration should go into petitioning your representatives in Congress to have the sexual assault statute of limitations eliminated.
Be the change you would like to see.
Of course he made a rape joke. HE is a rape joke. He’s a joke of a human being. Pull Your Pants Up, Cosby.
He’s getting off, probably literally, on being able to thumb his nose at his victims and their accusers. Textbook psychopath.
Oh, London. I’m a proud Ontarian, but this makes me rage.
The people who applauded better not be people I know. That’s my hometown and we’ve gone from hosting concerts to the World skating championship to this?!
London should be ashamed they let his vile ass into the city. He belongs in jail, not making joke about his crimes.
Bill Cosby unfiltered is a PR disaster. That’s because someone with so many accusations hanging over his head for spiking women’s drinks and then raping them should have sense enough to refrain from any jokes about either spiking drinks or rape. That joke just displayed his arrogance and his well-founded confidence that he will always find people to make excuses for his disgusting behavior. I love the way folks go on and on about how he should have his day in court and about “innocent until proven guilty.” Well, anyone who’s been paying attention should know by now that he does NOT want a day in court. That’s why he’s been paying off women as well as news outlets for years. In addition, he has been able with threats to keep negative information away from the public. That tells me he’s someone with a lot to hide, which is why he’s spent so much time, energy, and money to stay OUT of courts. He alone is responsible for his actions, good or bad, and no other black man is responsible for his misdeeds. As much as I despise him, I also despise the nitwits who cheered his callous remark as well as the nitwits who continue to defend him because they are enamored of the Dr. Huxtable image they confuse with the real Bill Cosby.
