Most heartfelt speeches at the Globes: Patricia Arquette and Gina Rodriguez

Patricia Arquette gave one of the best speeches I’ve seen in a while, and what made it even more memorable was that she was reading from a prepared statement and still managed to make it seem incredibly genuine. Arquette of course took home Best Supporting Actress for Boyhood and she’s thought to be the frontrunner for an Oscar. Boyhood also won Best Director and Best Film. On the red carpet last night, Arquette told Natalie Morales that the events in the movie, filmed over 12 years, dovetailed with major things happening in her own life, like her divorce, and that she often thought of the milestones in her own life as related to the film. You could tell that she cares deeply about her work and her children, and how that is all kind of wrapped up together in this meaningful film.

In her acceptance speech she thanked director Richard Linklater and called the film “so human, so simple and groundbreaking and significant in the history of cinema.” I especially loved the way Arquette ended her speech. She thanked her late parents and said that Ethan Hawke “reminded me of my own father,” she thanked her boyfriend, artist Eric White, for loving her, and then she thanked her children “to my kids Enzo and Harlo who I love and respect with all of my heart. My favorite role in this whole life has been being your mom.” I can’t watch her speech again without crying.

Oh Arquette is wearing black Escada!

Gina Rodriguez of The CW’s Jane The Virgin took home Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy. This was widely expected and she did not disappoint. I tuned in to E!’s livestream coverage briefly and Kristin Dos Santos was enthusing about how down to earth yet charismatic Rodriguez is, and how she wins people over instantly during press tours. This was the first Golden Globe nomination that The CW network has ever received.

In her speech Rodriguez thanked her parents and she referenced her culture. “Thank you to my mom and my dad for telling to dream big, and never stop dreaming… This award is so much more than myself. It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.” Like Arquette, she ended on a high note “My father used to tell me ‘today is going to be a great day, I can and I will.’ Dad, today is a great day, I can and I did.

Rodriguez is in Badgley Mischka, she looks gorgeous.

Here are Arquette and Rodriguez’s speeches.

  1. Kiddo says:

Patricia Arquette gave the best speech, period.

  2. jenni12 says:

Love Patricia Arquette- she ages with grace and acceptance, looks for good roles, and adores her kids. Just the fact that she mentioned respecting her kids…. LOVE her. “The only nerd with a paper”- she is perfection.

    • minime says:

She really is! 🙂 I’m rooting for her to get the Oscar, that would be so deserved!

    • bella says:

PA is perfection – so true!!!
Her acting abilities have never garnered much attention so it’s great to see her finally receiving the acclaim she deserves.
hope this leads her straight to Oscar.
she’s one in Hollywood who seems incredibly down to earth and genuine.
      refreshing…

    • bns says:

      I love her, too.

    • Trashaddict says:

Patricia Arquette is now my official girl crush for wearing glasses on stage. I know Tina Fey does it, but she looks like she can get away with anything. I hope more women start wearing glasses on stage!

  3. mia girl says:

    Gina Rodriguez made me cry.
And YES to more positive roles/representation of Latinos on TV and Film.

  4. Grace says:

Agreed! Arquette’s speech was terrific. Very genuine. There were quite a few good speeches last night including Billy Bob’s speech – short and funny.

    • tifzlan says:

My favorite Short and Funny Speech went to the Russian filmmakers (Leviathan) – “We are very happy.”

      😀

  5. Frida_K says:

Aw, Patricia Arquette is so sweet.

I loved her in Lost Highway and also in True Romance, an oldie but a goodie for sure. She is a wonderful actress. This was a lovely acceptance speech.

    🙂

  6. tifzlan says:

I don’t think Gina was expected to win at all. She was the underdog, even more so because her show is on the CW. Anyway, all of you already know how i feel about Gina/Jane the Virgin/last night’s win so i’m not going to keep talking about (please keep talking about it with me) but her speech was beautiful and i love how connected she feels to her culture that she constantly references it in her interviews and everything.

Another Beautiful Speech award goes to Common. Probably the best speech of last night.

    • Delta Juliet says:

Oh good. I came here to say exactly the same thing. Both of the mentioned speeches were wonderful but the one that hit me the most was Common’s. It was so well said and kind of captured how I feel about everything. It’s not “black lives matter”, or “cops lives matter”, etc. LIVES MATTER. All of them. Be good to each other.

      • tifzlan says:

Eeeeeeeh, there is a specific context to Black Lives Matter than cannot be replaced with All Lives Matter but that’s an aside.

I loved Common’s speech because it was thought-provoking and powerful.

      • Dani2 says:

I loved Common’s speech. Heck, I just love him in general.

      • Nikki says:

        @Tifzlan

        Thanks you!

        @Delta Juliet

If you think “Black Lives Matter” is saying only black people matter than you don’t understand the message behind the saying.

      • lu says:

If you actually thought that all lives matter then you wouldn’t be complaining about the phrase “black lives matter”. Society needs to be reminded specifically because black lives are not treated with the same value. It’s really that simple and uncomplicated. Interpreting the phrase as saying that all lives don’t matter equally is a truly lazy Straw Man argument.

    • Evyn says:

Love Gina and her show. I have been a fan since the first episode!

      • tifzlan says:

Me too! Me too, me too, me too!

Honestly, another person who really deserves a nomination on that show is Jaime Camil.

  7. Angie says:

Patricia Arquette’s speech made me cry too. I’m so happy for her. Followed her for years and I’m really hoping she gets that Oscar. Gina Rodriguez’s speech also made me a bit verklempt.
Two other speeches that were less emotional for me but really well done were those of Kevin Spacey and Maggie Gyllenhaall Maggie should do more public speaking period. Maybe run for office or something. lol.

  8. JB says:

I agree about Patricia Arquette, very sweet and genuine. I disagree about Gina Rodriguez. Her whole speech and demeanor were very irritating to me. Maybe because she opened with “Thank you God for making me an artist,” and continued to “me” and “my” her way through the rest of it. Could have been nerves but often those little linguistic hints suggest, for myself anyway, a not-so-little ego.

    • LolaBones says:

I dont think it means she has a big ego, I do it all the time and my self esteem is on the floor. I mean, you only know for sure what you think and what you feel.

      • JB says:

Oh of course! I did it too – in my own critical comment, ha! But the difference is that Gina was, in a professional situation, making a me me me speech. “I’m such an artist! Thank yous to MY president and MY cast!” I think she has a great presence and a great platform, I love her passion for her culture, and I think she looked smashing. I’m just a bit wary of the way she said a few things.

  9. clara says:

    Patricia is a knock-out.

  10. Marigold says:

    Don’t forget Jill Soloway!

  11. scout says:

I love Ms.Arquette, glad she won and she looks great in simple, elegant Black dress. She is a great actress but always so humble and classy.

  12. Lila says:

So, so thrilled for Patty. It is nice that “mature” women like her and Julianne Moore are getting the awards recognition. I really think that Patty has the Oscar in the bag, the ONLY scenario in which she doesn’t win would be if Harvey Weinstein buys votes for Keira (like he bought votes for Amy Adams).

  13. Brittany says:

I guess I am in the minority here. I find it hard to be genuine and heartfelt as she is standing there reading off of a piece of paper but that’s just me. I’m a Patricia fan and I think she deserved the win but I didn’t find her speech to be amazing or anything.

    • JB says:

I think it’s possible to be genuine and heartfelt while also being prepared. It’s not like she didn’t know she was nominated. She knew there was a 1 in 5 chance she’d have to speak and she didn’t want to forget anyone. I believed her notes more than Amy Adams’ ill-prepared, rambling, “You’re all talking to my daughter!!” nonsense.

      • Brittany says:

See, I actually preferred Amy’s speech because I like when they are NOT prepared and are genuinely surprised and don’t know what to say LOL

I loved Gina’s speech though! She was just so shocked, I thought it was cute and I loved her accent.

  14. Deb says:

I love Patricia Arquette. I am soooo happy for her! So deserved. 🙂

  15. MJ says:

I love Patricia Arquette. She just has this aura of realness and warmth about her. She just glows from within. Well-deserved win, she was fantastic in Boyhood.
