Mike Huckabee: Beyonce is too sexy, therefore the Obamas are terrible parents

wenn5073146

Mike Huckabee is going to run for president in 2016. He’s making all of the motions, much like Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush and Rand Paul. All that’s left to do is officially declare, but in the meantime, Huckabee is promoting his new book, God, Guns, Grits and Gravy. When excerpts of the book came out last week, my first reaction was “Oh, he’s going to stake out the ‘Culture Warrior’ position early on.” It’s kind of a smart move, and I bet Jeb Bush, Mittens and Rand wish they thought of it. In his book, Huckabee pontificates about Beyonce and Jay-Z and how they’re horrible people because Beyonce is sexy. Here’s what he wrote about Beyonce & Jay’s 2013 Grammy performance of “Drunk In Love”:

“My reaction: Why? Beyonce is incredibly talented – gifted, in fact. She has an exceptional set of pipes and can actually sing. She is a terrific dancer – without the explicit moves best left for the privacy of her bedroom. Jay-Z is a very shrewd businessman, but I wonder: Does it occur to him that he is arguably crossing the line from husband to pimp by exploiting his wife as a sex object?”

[From Huckabee’s book, via US News & World Report]

Does it occur to Mike Huckabee that Jay-Z doesn’t own his wife or her sexuality and that Beyonce can do whatever she wants, in private or in the bedroom?

While that was bad enough – and it made the kind of wide-ranging coverage that Huckabee was hoping for – Huckabee then parlayed his celebrity gossip theory into a statement about how Michelle and Barack Obama are terrible parents because they allow their daughters to listen to Beyonce’s music. *clutches pearls* Worst of all, he praises the Duggars as fine family entertainment.

Mike Huckabee tells PEOPLE he doesn’t get how the Obamas can encourage their daughters’ love for Beyoncé. Especially, the former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister says, if the president and first lady ever actually listened to the lyrics to – or seen a performance of Beyonc´’s steamy “Drunk in Love.” The Obamas “are excellent and exemplary parents in many ways,” Huckabee says.

“That’s the whole point. I don’t understand how on one hand they can be such doting parents and so careful about the intake of everything – how much broccoli they eat and where they go to school and making sure they’re kind of sheltered and shielded from so many things – and yet they don’t see anything that might not be suitable for either a preteen or a teen in some of the lyrical content and choreography of Beyoncé, who has sort of a regular key to the door” of the White House.

Beyoncé, Jay Z and their daughter, Blue Ivy, were at the White House last January for Mrs. Obama’s exclusive 50th birthday bash and the first lady has taken her girls to several Beyoncé concerts. The singer, criticized in Huckabee’s book for “obnoxious and toxic mental poison in the form of song lyrics” and dance moves “best left for the privacy of her bedroom,” was also featured prominently at the president’s second Inauguration in 2013.

The first lady’s office had no response to Huckabee’s comments. Huckabee, who signed off from his Fox News talk show earlier this month to weigh another presidential run, says he wants this book to expose what he calls “the vast disconnect” between the cultural norms of “where people actually live – in flyover country – versus the three great bubbles of influence in Washington, D.C., New York City and Hollywood.”

And all the online chatter stoked by his Beyoncé passages only proves the disconnect, he says. “It’s like people are shocked that I would raise that as an issue. My response to that is, ‘Gee, the mouse took the cheese.'”

Huckabee says he’s a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan (“She was terrific in The Hunger Games. I find her an amazing actress”), lists Dallas Buyers Club as a favorite flick, and gasps at the suggestion he could be labeled a prude.

“Oh, Heavens no,” he says. “Not at all!” He cites his 11-year record as Arkansas governor, when Arkansas was “one of the only states in America where every student grades K through 12 had to have both music and art classes. I’m one of the strongest advocates for the arts you’ll ever find!”

And for all his thunder against some stars of pop culture (Miley Cyrus’ twerking was “a disgustingly p-rnographic performance” and, of a mesh dress worn by Rihanna, he writes “I’ve seen dusty pickup truck windshields that were less see-through”), Huckabee’s not calling for any censorship or regulation.

“Government shouldn’t try to dictate what art looks like or what it portrays,” he says. “Last thing we want is government screwing it up, which is what they would do.”

As for any 2016 bid for the White House, Huckabee says he’ll decide sometime this spring and, if it’s a yes, he wants some of the only reality TV stars he can stomach – the Duggars of TLC’s 19 Kids & Counting beside him.

“I’ve pointed them out as an example of something that’s wholesome and wonderful and I’ve known them since Jim Bob was in the legislature when I was governor,” says Huckabee. The Duggars campaigned for Huckabee in 2008. “Should I run, I’m hoping they’ll do it again. And now there’s more of ’em!”

Sounding every bit like a candidate, Huckabee added jokingly: “If I can get ’em registered in each of the states, I’m going to win just by virtue of their votes!”

[From People]

Wait, his favorite movie is Dallas Buyers Club? WHAT? I’ll take Mike Huckabee at face value when he says he’s not a prude and that he doesn’t believe that the government should censor artists or art. So then what exactly is his goal? I think it’s just this – to get some press for his book by name-checking some celebrities, to stake out a Culture Warrior position, and to further condemn all women for daring to be sexual beings.

    Cannot stand him.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Second that, Goodnames. And I’m willing to bet he took a peek at JLaw’s hacked pics, too.

    • mia girl says:

I still cannot believe he actually wrote in his book:
“Does it occur to him that he is arguably crossing the line from husband to pimp by exploiting his wife as a sex object?”

It’s rare to see SO MUCH WRONG packed into one sentence.

I can’t believe we are in 2015 and a viable candidate for POTUS would proudly declare this as an insightful observation, with no understanding as to WHY and HOW this will offend about 70% of the US population.

      • Abbott says:

Because it’s that other 30% who wishes it was still 1955 and, um, they vote.

        F–k this guy.

      • T.C. says:

You don’t even have to like Bey and Jay to find this line so incredibly offensive: “Does it occur to him that he is arguably crossing the line from husband to pimp by exploiting his wife as a sex object?”

Seriously why do people keep having me come to JayZ’s defense when I’m not a fan! Is it really Jay controlling Bey and telling her to go underdressed when every other female musician does the same thing. OTOH I do agree about the Obamas exposing their young daughters to Beyonce concerts but IT IS NON OF MY BUSINESS. They girls seem well brought up, well educated and not doing crazy things.

      • Sabrine says:

Oh my goodness, I can’t imagine this offensive individual as President. Why is he even mentioning rap singers in his speeches? His comments make no sense at all.

      • mia girl says:

He doesn’t seem to mind or mention suggestive lyrics coming from some the boys.
        http://www.mediaite.com/tv/huckabee-hates-beyonces-sexualized-lyrics-but-he-sure-likes-these-libido-charged-songs/

If you don’t have time to click on the link, it has some of the lyrics to his friend Ted Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever” and footage of Huckabee playing “Pour Some Sugar on Me” w Def Leppard.

Has Mr. Huckabee even take his own advice and “ever actually listened to the lyrics” of these songs? I sure hope his kids didn’t see him rock out to this.
“You got the peaches, I got the cream…”

      • JenniferJustice says:

Mia – I’m so glad you wrote about Ted Nugent. Talk about a hebaphile! I wish more people knew about his past. He married a seventeen-year-old Hawaiian native named Pele Massa. In Hawaii she was too young to get married even with parental consent, so Nugent paid her parents to allow him to become her legal guardian. He cheated on her repeatedly and treated her like sh!t! She was basically his sex slave. She divorced him when she got older and had some cahonas. He is the epitomy of masogyny.

And this is who Huckabee positions himself with? Epic fail!

      • doofus says:

anybody who aligns themselves with Nugent is cray-cray. that man is DISGUSTING.

has Huckabee every listened to the words to “Jail Bait”?

“Well I dont care if youre just thirteen
You look too good to be true
I just know that youre probably clean
Theres one lil’ thing I got do to you”

“Its quite all right I asked your mama
        Wait a minute officer
Dont put those handcuffs on me
Put them on her and Ill share her with you”

        he’s so gross.

      • mia girl says:

JJ and doofus – Can you believe in the video I linked to, when introducing Nugent, Huckabee says
“…but most of all he’s a patriot and a friend”?
Based on Mr. Huckabee’s own moral advice, he should be questioning why he is associating himself with such a person.

Listen, Nugent has the right to be disgusting and I have the right not to listen. Huckabee has the right to think that Nugent is a patriot, though I would disagree.

The obvious problem is that Huckabee is a hypocrite, selectively choosing and targeting people because they don’t align with his politics, all in the name of a “culture war” which he is appointing himself grand master of.

He’s honed in on Beyoncé/JayZ mostly because of their association with The Obamas and clutching his pearls over her lyrics and sexuality to score political points at the expense of the two young Obama daughters. Then he tops it all off with misogynistic, racial BS

As Abbott said so eloquently up thread… F-ck this guy.

      • Janet says:

Wouldn’t you love to see a Nugent/Palin or Palin/Nugent presidential ticket? The Shitter and the Quitter.

      • doofus says:

Janet, you raise an interesting point here.

Palin apparently has some “outdoors” show and Nugent is schedule to appear on it later this month (I think).

Nugent is fond of using the word “r*tard” to describe people who disagree with him politically.

Palin has come out swinging against that word (one of the few things we agree on) as being very offensive as she has a Down Syndrome child and that term is often used in a derogatory way to describe those afflicted. Like, she equates it to the N word.

I wonder, if this is pointed out to her, what she would say?…would she defend him as she did Limbaugh? or would her “mama bear” protectiveness for her children prompt her to call him out?

      • M says:

Doofus- those lines…..someone should tell Huckabee’s kids to look closer to home if they need a “mangy dog to put out of its misery”.

    • Mmhmm says:

I actually like him and have voted for him, but this is completely ridiculous lol.

    • MG says:

Let me start off by saying I disagree with 99.99% of what he’s saying…but…I’m the mother of a pre-teen and Beyonce’s music has become very sexualized lately (which is her right and completely fine by me…I LOVE Drunk in Love) but some of which is not appropriate for my daughter. So on that point I get…but he’s still a jackass.

      • melodycalder says:

I agree. I will not put on any of her new music videos in front of my two year old. The first time she saw and looked at me and asked if she was OK and what was she doing, I turned it off. Kids do not need to be watching that, it sets a bad tone for our youth. Not just Beyonce but all these stars who shake their half clothed bodies on TV for money.

      • snowflake says:

I didn’t like when Bey gave Jay a lap dance. To me, it reduces her to a sexual object and I think that’s what this guy was trying to say. When have you seen a male performer give a lap dance to his wife on stage? To me, it promotes that you can’t just be a talented singer/dancer, you have to be a stripper too if you’re a woman performer. I think she’s a talented person, she doesn’t have to use her body to sell herself. She can use her musical talents. She has so much more to offer.

      • JenniferJustice says:

I agree with you on that. Bey has become down-right raunchy in her attempt to remain relevant and probably just plain vanity wanting to be seen as sexy and desirable. I don’t care to see any woman’s pantyhose crotch panel. That is all.

      • Lauren says:

        I agree too.
I also don’t think Beyonce is as much as a feminist she wants the public to think. Her lyrics and her constant nudity are anything BUT feministic and make her a horrible role model for young girls/women.

    • Janet says:

THIS POS’S SON HUNG A DOG FROM A TREE AND HE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT BAD PARENTING SKILLS?!!?

  2. neelyo says:

He’s got nothing to offer except an anti-Beyoncé platform? Yeah, that’ll get the country far.

Mike Huckster is just trying to amp up book sales.

  3. Esmom says:

Keep talking, Huckabee. He even seems to admit he needs to rely on a steady supply of Duggars to get elected.

As for the “three great bubbles of influence in Washington, D.C., New York City and Hollywood,” sounds like he’s reading from the same playbook as Angie Harmon. And she’s not hypocritical at all.

    • doofus says:

“And she’s not hypocritical at all.”

      lol

his campaign slogan should be “side hugs for everyone!”

    • QQ says:

Esmom AGAIN second time in this One post Ima Have to beg one of ya’ll to NOT put that out there cause someone Might Alert Fertile Doing it for the Jesus Never in The Butts Duggars and Voila Ten More Duggars Voting agen Might just pop Up from their Living Incubators

      • PunkyMomma says:

OMG. You’re killing me, QQ. (And I don’t believe for one second that Jim Bob doesn’t own Michelle’s chocolate 🍒.) (Can I say that here?)

      • QQ says:

Yeah Punky Maybe he does But that’s from before they got saved, they’ve not traveled the chocolate highway since they got in bed with the Lord

      • PunkyMomma says:

Please, he’s most likely the biggest freak there is, the ones pointing the fingers always are.

His kids are dog killing freaks.

      • Kitten says:

        Wait what?

      • doofus says:

Kitten, see the snopes link below.

one of his sons killed a dog under questionable circumstances while a counselor at a Boy Scout camp.

he was fired and the actions following it (re: prosecution, or lack thereof) are shady.

      • Kiddo says:

If they hung and slit a dog’s throat, they are sociopaths, full stop.

      • marie says:

I went to school with David and not only was I not surprised about the dog, I can also add he’s an ignorant, loud-mouthed redneck in every way. Let’s talk about parenting skills, Huckabee, eh, but let’s start with yours.

  5. The Original Mia says:

    Idiot!

  6. Easi says:

He jerks it to her and feels guilty. Poor Bey

  7. Jane's Wasted Talent says:

Interesting that he didn’t name a single person of color as a ‘wholesome entertainer.’ Or am I hearing dog whistles where there are none? (Rhetorical question only.)

Instead of criticizing the President’s parenting, Mr Huckabee, maybe you should pay more attention to your dog-murdering sons. (Link for the Fox die-hards: http://snopes.com/politics/politicians/huckabeedog.asp)

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, no, you are right on. No surprise there.

    • sighhhh says:

I noticed that as well re: the person’s of color.

    • QQ says:

…Who Knows Probably he’s one of those gassbags for whom a woman of color STARTS as a sex ladden Object so that’s the Initial Premise “dirty” from then you can either cover up and tone down yor, you know have your normal body, agency and Urges and Be called all types of slut

    • Kitten says:

Oh. my. god. that Snopes link.

      My hands are shaking.

    • wolfpup says:

He is not inclusive – therefore he is part of the problem.

Hasn’t he learned the simple kindness of letting people be who they are? I wouldn’t think to judge anyone (except, a gross man).

    • I Choose Me says:

Just read the snopes link. I believe they did it and that they’re both sociopathic pieces of sh*t.

    • M says:

      Excellent post! Thank you!

    • Kcarp says:

What do you mean he doesn’t like Bill Cosby?

  8. Ellie66 says:

Really Dallas Buyers Club is his fave movie. I bet he has never seen it maybe just McConaugheys Lincoln commercial. Lol!

  9. Skeptic in the room says:

…….. says Huckabee as he zips up his trousers after a vigorous session of auditing Beyonces work. I notice alot of these male conservative rightwing types make a beyline for Beyonce. They are clearly conflicted over the message their bodies are sending their brains and they lash out.

This is why I detest the endless attacks on Beyonce over the pettiest of things on places like this. She has enough on her plate between the MRA crowd and the racist dbags of the world. She shouldnt have to put up with surrogacy conspiracy theories and criticism over bringing her child to a museum too.

Now can someone send Huckabee a link to the Grown Woman video.

    • doofus says:

“They are clearly conflicted over the message their bodies are sending their brains and they lash out.”

well said. the same can be said for the most-outspoken homophobic politicians, IMO. Larry Craig is a perfect example. championing anti-gay legislation while “toe-tapping” in airport bathroom stalls.

    • Jules says:

I think the ‘poor’ woman can handle it.

      • Nancy says:

It’s not about if she can handle it or not Jules. She’s been able to survive in the industry for over twenty years for a reason but the point is…should she have to?

      • Brandii says:

“I think the poor woman can handle it”

        Life motto of bullies everywhere.

      • Amy says:

        “Life motto of bullies everywhere.”

        Now that I love.

  10. OhDear says:

There is so much wrong in his comments I can’t even.

Jay Z is *pimping* Beyonce? Seriously? Racist, sexist attention-whoring douche.

  11. jen says:

Gotta love how he just assumes the man is in charge of the relationship. Tells u a lot right there

    • Kitten says:

Right? It’s as if he’s saying that he can’t believe that Jay Z “lets” Beyoncé dance onstage.

  12. doofus says:

why is it that these people run year after year after year?

did they not get the fact that NO ONE WANTED THEM the first few times they ran? as in, they didn’t even get the nom for the general election?…and they came in fourth or fifth in each primary?…

    • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

They’re attempting to raise their profiles to get more influence/lucrative gigs.

    • pleaseicu says:

I think each time he runs he gets a more lucrative Fox News contract and bigger six figure book deal.

  13. Dorothy#1 says:

I dont like that he is only calling out Beyonce but honestly i get sick of having to quickly turn the radio station because of all the lyrics. My boys are 8 and 10 why cant i listen to the radio with them?
BTW i normally am extremely liberal. lol i would never vote for huckabee.

    • jen says:

He’s shading the Obamas, who have very publicly had the famous couple as guests. It’s also some passive racism too I’m sure… a vote for Suckabee is a vote for nice, white, fully clad entertainers in the White House! Country music all around!!!

      • Kiddo says:

It’s not passive, it’s blatant. Black man as pimp, dangerous sexuality of black woman, so she is a prostitute and threat. The Obamas are bad parents because they allow exposure to his narrative of a dangerous stereotype of blacks, that he constructed. Black people are so EASILY influenced.

Nevermind that both blacks and whites listen to Beyonce and that the Obama children haven’t been embroiled in any trouble or controversy. You know, like hanging and slitting an innocent dog’s throat.

      • Danskins says:

        Well said, Kiddo!

      • Belle Epoch says:

KIDDO my first reaction was “racism” as well. He’s pretending this is about sexuality, or something, but the “key to the White House” comment is like a dog whistle for racists.

BTW the tea party literature is all taken from white supremacy groups. They just change “blacks” to “illegal aliens” and put out exactly the same material.

    • Brandii says:

Then keep your radio tuned to a kid friendly station. How is this rocket science? I dont want to listen to music geared for 8 year olds so you wont find my like tuning in to those stations and then whining about the content.

      • Amy says:

…this? Because changing the radio station is definitely not going to be your hardest job as a parent. Typical radio stations aren’t made for 8 year olds.

    • Kcarp says:

I get where you are coming from but music now isn’t as bad as when I was a kid let’s see I use to like Push It, Me So Horny, and I want Your Sex.

Was it ok for a kid heck no made me like it more.

  14. maeliz says:

Does he only let his family listen to ugly singers? Saying some wrong things already

  15. MrsBPitt says:

I say, I say, these young’uns should only be listening to Frank Sinatra and Andy Williams!!! What the heck is wrong with these parents today!!!!!! And none of that Elivis fellow, with the hip shaking!!!!

    • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

Hey, Frank and Andy are still good! So’s Harry Belafonte. 🙂 No need to shade them. 🙂

I do agree with your point, just being a little facetious because I love that style of music.

      • PS says:

Oh, and they can listen to some classics like “Baby, it’s cold outside” (the creeps’ hymn). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MFJ7ie_yGU, all squeaky clean and chlorine bleached. 🙂

      • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

I guess my point was kind of that I hate that certain genres of music are perceived as ‘white only’- I want everyone to enjoy them. And yes, they weren’t always that wholesome if you pay attention. Cole Porter anyone? 🙂

      • Kiddo says:

I like Frank Sinatra music. I can not lie. After I watched the The Pope of Greenwich Village, I was in love with “The Summer Wind”.

      • mia girl says:

@PS Funny that you pointed out that song. This past holiday, I actually listened to the song all the way through for the first time. I never realized how strange the lyrics were! The guy in the song is totally predatory and two steps away from date rape. The woman keeps saying “No” and then finally sings “Say, what’s in this drink?” OMG.

I should add that I took notice because I was listening to a version sung by Seth McFarland… which only made it creepier.

      • PunkyMomma says:

@ mia girl – the creep factor of the McFarland cover was over the top for me. Yikes.

      • mia girl says:

        @Punky – Right?!
It was so creey that I am still not sure if McFarland was emphsizing the creep to underscore the message of the song, or if the creep just came out naturally as he sang. I’m leaning towards the later.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Frank was arrested for adultery.

  16. Say What!? says:

Ugh. Where were all of these Culture Warriors (TM) when they were trotting out Britney Spears at the GOP convention in 2000? She was still a teenager and making videos with Porn directors where she was sucking on a straw in Slo Mo. Or was that OK because she was white and a Republican?

    • Amy says:

But of course: good – white – Lousiana – girl?

Shucks shes the ideal image of America to them.

  17. Zan says:

None of this is really surprising from this guy because culture war is mostly all he’s got, but I find it tiresome, especially the idea of “real” America vs. fake (?!) America. Politicians like him love to trumpet the values of “places where people actually live” –but people actually live in cities, too. Some people even choose to live in coastal cities he dismisses because of the values–livable wages, appreciation of diversity, healthy lifestyles, varied job opportunities–these cities allow them to enjoy.

    • Kitten says:

Yep. I’m one of those people who chooses to live in a coastal city.

How do we make him understand that rich, out-of-touch people live in flyover suburban towns too?

      • Zan says:

The whole idea is ridiculous. But it is all electoral politics. He is never gonna win California or New York, so why not spew this divisive drivel?

    • Tiffany :) says:

      Exactly!
He said “where people actually live – in flyover country – versus the three great bubbles of influence in Washington, D.C., New York City and Hollywood.” …

Um, people “actually live” in DC, NY and LA. I am from the “heartland” and moved to LA, and I am SO TIRED of people acting like morality or quality of character is some how associated with where you live. There are wonderful people and assholes EVERYWHERE.

My neighbors murdered people in my small home town, and I come to find in my new big city neighborhood that neighbors were also murdering neighbors. These things aren’t bound by geography.

  18. Amelie says:

From my reading of posts, my opinion of Gov. Huckabee’s comments/observations are different. I ‘get ‘what he says about Beyonce’s husband,Jay-Z, and it seems plausible to me as he is now managing her.

IMO, many entertainers are too explicit-Beyonce included-what are they really selling sex or their art? The disconnect he mentions about the Obama’s (and many other parents) is correct. Why would they allow/encourage their daughters to listen to music and attend concerts for performers who espouse a “value” of explicit sexuality? Frankly, it’s inconsistent.

Finally, at the Golden Globes, the male presenter who presented with Beyonce-made a comment about her ‘globes’-hey, she was falling out of her dress. So, I ask you, what does it say about someone when they wear a dress like this? Do they want to be sexually provocative or are they saying that they are a serious artist? I suggest that Gov. Huckabee is not condemning anyone, but making an accurate observation.

    • mia girl says:

Amelie – I very much disagree with most of what you said, but that is my opinion.

But one fact I must point out: Beyoncé was not anywhere near the Golden Globes on Sunday. The woman you are referring to was actually Jennifer Lopez. Not sure how you could confuse the two.

    • AlmondJoy says:

The male presenter was with JLO and he made a comment about HER “globes.” Jennifer Lopez was the one wearing the revealing dress and presenting an award.

    • lizzie says:

Beyonce wasn’t at the Golden Globes. You’re thinking of JLo. Are you a Huckabee intern?

    • Amelie says:

A quick post to all of the negative comments in response to my post. I did a quick photo search of Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. There are lots of side by side photo comparisons of these gals and references to their trying to copy each others styles. It may be a good idea to look at some of these photos yourself and see the similarity before making negative statements. Thanks.

The idea that Lopez and Beyoncé look alike is preposterous. Too bad you just can’t own up to your mistake.

      • doofus says:

their styles may be similar, but their FACES are not.

Johnny Depp and Steven Tyler have similar “scarfy hobo” styles. would you confuse the two of them?

Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee have similar “suit and tie” styles…would you confuse the two of them?

Diane Keaton and KD Lang have similar “women in menswear” styles…would you confuse the two of them?

      • mia girl says:

Amelie – Are you trying to defend your mistake by saying it’s easy to mix up Beyonce and Lopez because the two ladies have a similar fashion styles? Kate Hudson had a similar fashion style at the Globes, but you did not mistake her for Beyonce.

Gov Huckabee has a similar style to Sen Ted Cruz who has a similar style to Sen Marco Rubio, etc etc. I do not get them mixed up.

@Amelie: “IMO, many entertainers are too explicit-Beyonce included”
Who gets to decide what is ‘too explicit’ for another adult though?

“what are they really selling sex or their art?…What does it say about someone when they dress like this? Do they want to be sexually provocative or are they saying that they are a serious artist?”

Since when have being an artist of any type and being sexually provocative ever been mutually exclusive? Art does not require sexual modesty. To people who don’t think being ‘sexually provocative’ means a person can’t be anything else, this isn’t even an issue.

“The disconnect he mentions about the Obama’s (and many other parents) is correct. Why would they allow/encourage their daughters to listen to music and attend concerts for performers who espouse a “value” of explicit sexuality? Frankly, it’s inconsistent…”

It’s not inconsistent at all. Not all adults feel that teenagers should be or need to be shielded from human sexuality. That doesn’t make someone a bad parent- it makes them a realistic and reasonable one.

This is why I kinda stress when people, sometimes women, hate on Beyoncé and other women for being too sexual and not the ideal feminist.

All you’re doing is echoing and trumpeting the same message men have for years. Sure you don’t have to like or respect her. I think there’s equal parts good and bad to her and that she can be a little dumb. But let’s stop saying a sexually comfortable woman who’s proud of her body is ‘failing’.

Jay Z CAN have a happy marriage with Beyoncé while she performs how she wants. Beyoncé CAN want equality between the sexes while she dances in a leotard. The Obamas CAN see her and her husband as more than the stereotype of a drug dealer and a sexual being. They CAN let their daughters listen to her even if they wouldn’t want them to pursue her goals. Let’s all just be open-minded and recognize each other as human beings.

If you agree with him bashing the Obamas for their association with the Carters then what is your opinion about him associating with that gross pervert Ted Nugent who sings about RAPING CHILDREN? I see it as hipocrasy defined.

Upon comparison, I’d rather listen to Beyoncé sing about getting down with her HUSBAND than the ILLEGAL garbage Ted Nugent sings about.

BTW, I have nothing against anyone who leans more on the conservative side, everyone has their own valid reasons for voting as they do. My humble suggestion to you would be to consider a candidate with a better track record of practicing his preachings, especially after his own parenting has been proven quite questionable what with his son torturing animals and all that (and him subsequently firing gov. employees who didn’t want to help him cover it up). What kind of parenting produces that???

You don’t get to censor music for everybody, but parents do get to monitor what their own kids buy and listen to.

I think that’s all he was really saying about the Obama’s, mixed in with all the other crap he spouts.

    • Amy says:

      Tbh I don’t agree.

I had parents who raised me to eat healthy and value physical education and who didn’t censor my music listening. It didn’t change anything. I was exposed to perspectives I wouldn’t have been if they wrapped me up in a ‘appropriate’ music bubble. I learned to see past people’s words into their backgrounds and past. I learned to appreciate metaphor (something that is seriously sorely lacking today) and know that simply reading a line didn’t make that line the artists personal motto. I learned to love and appreciate all forms of music and I learned that if you live in ignorance it doesn’t matter what you listen to. That if music is your only salvation then you can easily doom yourself to living inside an echo chamber rather than keeping your mind and heart open.

    • Veronica says:

We all listen and watch things that are problematic. The Bechdel test alone will knock out three quarters of the movies I own. The difference is raising your children to recognize the problems inherent to the industry so that they can acknowledge and work on changing them.

Barring that, it’s not exactly easy to keep your teenager away from pop culture. Between the Internet, television, radio, and goodness knows what else, it’s everywhere. Restricting their access is only going to make it more appealing because then it becomes a source of rebellion and intrigue. Point in case – my aunt’s family was extremely conservative and restricted their children’s access to cable, Internet, and non-Christian media. They even homeschooled their sons for most of their lives. My mother didn’t restrict her children’s access to music and media beyond common sense principles (NC-17 content, etc.) and preferred to comment on things she found problematic rather than forbid it altogether. Out of the two of us, guess which parent *didn’t* have kids go through a hyper-rebellious stage in their teens?

With that — I don’t want a president who comments on football calls (Obama) or a presidential candidate who comments on Beyoncé (Huckabee).

Bluntly–I don’t think Huckabee is any better or any worse than any of them. And that is no compliment.

    • Kitten says:

Well, he’s a bit worse because he used his political power to make sure his son wasn’t investigated for animal cruelty. And his son did kill a dog, so there’s that.

Hopefully the Democrats will win the next election, because if this moron or one like him becomes POTUS it won’t be pretty.
That being said I partially agree with one thing, our popular culture has become hyper sexualized. I am not talking only Bey, but JLo, Miley, you name it, I think it has reached a soft porn level. Before anyone starts telling me off, I have nothing against nudity, or sexuality portrayed in a movie or whatever, but I don’t think that twerking on a stage has much to do with music, you know?
    Getting ready to duck now.

    • Kitten says:

Well getting naked usually doesn’t have much to do with music in and of itself, but it has a lot to do with the image that’s attached to the music and sometimes the two are wholly intertwined.

I actually like Beyoncé, but I don’t listen to her music, mainly because I don’t care for pop music. That being said, I don’t see the harm in that kind of music. I find pop uninteresting and uninspiring, so I listen to other stuff.

I don’t know…I’m not a parent so maybe I just don’t see it but I don’t understand all the hand-wringing. It’s been brought up before around here but when I was growing up, hair bands were the thing and many of those dudes were rocking the same image as Beyoncé or Miley–tight clothes, big hair, lots of makeup, and their videos were very, very sexual. Granted, this was before the days of Instagram and social media, but I don’t remember the general public being outraged over these men exploiting their bodies and their sexuality for profit.

It just seems to me that this is an issue because the public thinks that they have the right to dictate how women present themselves to the world.

      • Otaku fairy says:

..”but I don’t remember the general public being outraged over these men exploiting their bodies and their sexuality for profit.

It just seems to me that this is an issue because the public thinks that they have the right to dictate how women present themselves to the world. ”

I think you nailed it. It’s always labelled as exploitation when grown women want to show skin or have sexuality as a part of their image, but not when men do it. I don’t remember people saying 20-year-old Justin Bieber was exploiting, disrespecting, or objectifying himself or even being a bad role model by posing in a half-naked and sexualized manner- people just basically said he was an unnattractive, try-hard douchebag with the face of a kid. And people don’t raise that argument with male actors or someone like Adam Levine for their scenes and photoshoots either.

Somehow it’s only 33-year-old Beyonce, 22- year-old Miley, or any other adult with a vagina- who get’s the ‘where’s her self-respect/she’s being exploited/bad role model/ she’s trash/she’s objectifying and disrespecting herself’ etc. comments for going nude or semi-nude or portraying themselves in any sexual manner, and I think it’s because people still view female (but not male) value and respectability in terms of sexual modesty.
His rant may not have been as racist as Bill O’reilly’s slut-shaming rant against Beyonce, which specifically and offensively targeted black people and black women and girls, but still, especially as a cishet white dude, he has no business policing the bodies of Beyonce, other WOC, or women in general.

      • snowflake says:

I get tired of seeing women parading around on stage like the only thing they have the talent to sell is their body. a lot of it’s not that they “want” to do it, a lot of it is they feel they have to be sexual as a female performer. you don’t see rap guys stripping down and grinding on some woman. NOT to the extent women singers do. but for some reason, i guess women performers feel like they have to do it. and i understand, a lot of it’s trying to appeal to male fans but c’mon. when will women realize they can just perform a song. miley doesn’t have to straddle a wrecking ball and beyonce doesn’t have to give a lap dance to sell an album. It’s over the top and too much. if i want see a lap dance, I’ll go to a strip club. I’ve f*cked more men than I can count and used to work in a strip club. I’m the furtherest thing from a prude. But for some reason, male performers sell albums without being over the top sexual. and yes, maybe it’s their choice but I feel like it gives young women growing up the impression that your talent isn’t enough, you have to be hot and sexy too. as a woman, you can succeed without being hot or strutting your stuff.

      • Otaku fairy says:

@Snowflake: So if Woman A is doing something she doesn’t want to do because she feels pressured, and there’s a possibility that young Woman B may feel that she has to do that thing in order to succeed or have value, Woman C and Woman D are supposed to not do that thing even if it’s what they want? Does the fact that there has been societal pressure on a group of people to do a certain thing mean that all or most of the people doing it are not doing it of there own free will? Especially if there’s also societal pressure on that same group of people to make the opposite decision?

Not every woman in the music industry is overtly sexual in her image or getting naked- Miley, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce are. They’re the only ones I notice doing it right now. Adele isn’t. Lorde isn’t. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez aren’t. Janelle Monet isn’t. Taylor Swift isn’t. And there are some female singers who are somewhere in between. I could probably name more female singers who aren’t doing the overt sex and shock stuff right now than those who are. I don’t want the music industry to be a place where every woman is either modest, demure, wholesome, classy, and parent-approved (not because she wants to be, but because she’s pressured to be) OR a place where every woman takes it off and gets all sexy/sexual because of pressure. So far, neither seems to be the case.

I think that if we lived in a society where the male body was stigmatized and viewed as scandalous, sinful, and too provocative in the same way women’s bodies have been, we’d see more men making like Miley, Beyonce, and Nicki too.

      • snowflake says:

        @ otaku fairy

what makes you think Bey wants to do this, explore her sexuality? is it not possible that she is doing because she knows by doing so she will sell more music? and the same for the other women who do similar. you assume she is sexually liberated or however you would put it. jay is not her pimp but I know my husband wouldn’t want me to give him a public lap dance. just like she prob doesn’t care for video girls in his videos. but both support an outdated stereotype of their gender/race/artistic self and help sell more music. i think it’s more a financial decision on her part, not b/c she’s been dreaming of giving her husband a lap dance on stage. so in other words, she’s shaking her butt for money. just like the stripper she’s portraying. THAT’S the problem I have with it. I dont buy the b.s. she wants to do it b/c she’s sexually free. yes, just like britney always dreamed of dancing, dressed like a young school girl, licking a lollipop. not! both knew to reach high record sales they had to do it.

      • Otaku fairy says:

@snowflake: “what makes you think Bey wants to do this, explore her sexuality? is it not possible that she is doing because she knows by doing so she will sell more music? and the same for the other women who do similar…yes, just like britney always dreamed of dancing, dressed like a young school girl, licking a lollipop.”

I’m not trying to say that every single woman in the music industry who is now or who has ever been overtly sexual has been empowered and liberated and did so because she wanted to. In Britney’s case, she was underage, she’s had little control over her life and career, and both she and her management team seemed torn between wanting her to be the more wholesome, pure, parent-approved, church-approved female pop star and wanting her to be a sex symbol for the guys.

But there are other women who seem to be wanting to do what they’re doing. Beyonce is 33-years old, has been in the business for what, 15 years now, and is successful and powerful in the entertainment industry. I’m going based on that, her words, and the fact that this seems to be in line with her style- Beyonce hasn’t been that raunchy or shocking, and I don’t think she’s ever even gone naked either, but she’s never shied away from sexuality or put herself on a strictly modest dress code.

Even though Miley is younger and not as successful as Beyonce, I believe that she wants to do what she’s doing as well. For YEARS- even before the twerking and the pixie cut- she’s been giving interviews about how she’s felt like people were trying to control her, force her to basically be this modest, perfect little good girl, how she was bullied and called a slut for not living up to that modest perfect good girl image, “wanting to go crazy”, and how she wanted to be free to do what she wanted to do, experiment, make mistakes, and be herself, she does seem to like vulgarity, and her image isn’t one that comes off as trying to be sexy for the sake of being seductive. It comes off as using open sexuality to be shocking, edgy, and rebellious. Yes, the girl can be try-hard and unattractive, and I do think she’s immature, but to people who noticed those things she kept saying in interviews over the years, it’s not all hard to believe that she would willingly choose a ‘shocking’ openly sexual image to rebel now.

    • Otaku fairy says:

No need to duck, but, why is the sex stuff ok for actors and actresses in movies, but not for pop stars in music videos, photoshoots, or performances? I’ve always felt that there was a bit of a double standard between what people are ok with actors doing on camera vs. what people are ok with female pop stars doing.

In the entertainment industry almost every other natural aspect of human life is portrayed in music, movies, pictures, and tv- love, death, rebellion, violence, fear, etc. so it doesn’t seem to me like sexuality should be treated differently. Besides being a dance move, you’re right in saying that twerking isn’t really about music. Sexuality and skin-baring aren’t in and of themselves about music- but then neither are a lot of the other things entertainers and singers use as a part of their work, music, or image. Rebellion is not about music. Fashion is not about music. Love is not about music. But entertainers have always incorporated sexuality, skin, fashion, love, and rebellion into their songs, performances, and images- sometimes subtly and sometimes overtly. For some of the singers and entertainers you mentioned, overt sexuality (along with other themes, like rebellion or shock) are a big theme in what they’re doing right now.

      • vauvert says:

First of all, thank you all for keeping it on a high level of debate. I would never post on any other public site, much less a gossip one, because usually the terms used and the general conversation are brought to the lowest level possible.
So let me explain: I should not have used only female examples, you are correct – men like Levine, Bieber not to mention a whole bunch of rappers (sorry but I don’t know their names) use lyrics that I find objectionable and gestures on stage and in videos that in my opinion have nothing to do with music. Music has been around for ever, right? But it is only in the last decades that suddenly music alone has not been enough any more, it has to involve simulated sex acts, barely there clothing that you would never see in real day to day life and so on. This tells me that the focus has moved from the music to the lewd and I don’t see the point of it. At what point do you stop? Because it seems to me that the only thing left is to actually have hardcore sex on stage. Are you ok with that too?
Erotica, whether in prose, poem or visual form (from carvings to paintings to now videos) has also been around forever and I have absolutely no problem with that. Movies targeted to an adult/ mature audience that depict sexual relations are fine ( and I am not refreing to porn, just normal movies) and thank goodness for European movies which actually show all of it in a more realistic fashion than HW usually does (everyone is gorgeous, perfecly made up and looking younger than thirty). What I object to is the crassness of music videos that are targeted at the general audience including kids and teens that makes them believes that this is the norm or it should be.
How can I teach a daughter to not dress like a hooker when the singer she admires most always looks like one in every video she is in? I am sorry but I am so not buying the argument that it is female empowerment… Female empowerment is arguing your pov intelligently with logical arguments, it is being strong and athletic, making your voice heard, having opinions and not being afraid to express them. And sure, having the sexual relations that you want to have without anyone dictating them to you. But rubbing yourself in oil and spreading your but cheeks on a stage to the audience?? Nope. Yes, of course, as a parent I am in charge of what my child sees and technically I could try to remove acces to al media, which sounds extreme, and I certainly have no intention of doing that. This is the world we live in. But you know, I feel that pop music should be accessible to a young and impressionable audience. And it should certainly be fashionable, angsty, rebellious and lots of other things without veering into porn, which is what it does now.

A grown woman uses her own sexuality in the way she wants to: this is horrible and evil and must be stopped. If she’s black, it’s about a thousand times worse. And they can’t believe that a woman really CAN own her own body — there must be a man behind her somewhere, pulling the strings.

A girl’s sexuality is controlled and owned by her father and then her husband, and she’s kept constantly shamed by it so that she cannot believe she owns her own body on any level and therefore she can be used by them however they want: the way the world is supposed to be. Especially if she’s white.

Everything boils down to that for them. They protest gay marriage because it means women’s bodies won’t be properly “protected” (i.e. owned and used) by men. When they say it threatens “traditional” marriage, they mean it threatens women being completely subservient to men. They are super-duper clear about this. Their racism is part and parcel of it — so long as they can pretend black people are scary sexually in some way, they can pretend they’re “protecting” white women from them. And they are absolutely and utterly obsessed with sex.

Anyone who would align themselves w/ Nugent is sick or uneducated on his sickness. Beyonce shakes her own ass but singing about raping 13 yrs olds is A-OK?!? This is a good example of what’s wrong with the world……f those guys…….
