At first, entertainment journalists claimed that Jennifer Aniston had pulled out of her media engagements following her “snub” at the Oscar nominations announcement. But then Jennifer rallied – she spoke to the press at the Critics Choice on Thursday night, then she did a day of press on Friday, and on Monday, she appeared on The Ellen Show. Ellen DeGeneres knows better than to toss an Angelina Jolie question at Jennifer, so there were no references made to Jennifer’s comment on Friday that the Uncool Bermuda Triangle is some “tired and petty BS” and everyone needs to get over it. Jennifer did talk to Ellen about being the “number one snubbed” and how she loves Kate Hudson’s butt. You can see the video here.
Too hot to not handle! Jennifer Aniston made headlines last week when she grabbed the butt of longtime pal Kate Hudson just before the Golden Globes outside The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
“Well, my gosh, look at that ass,” Aniston, 45, said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, Jan. 19, when Ellen DeGeneres showed the photo of the actress grasping her friend’s rear. “It’s such an irresistible tush.”
“I’m allowed!” Aniston added. “Ryan Seacrest tried to get in. Kate actually did say, ‘Oh well, that’s gonna go everywhere.'” The handsy moment took place on the red carpet as both women gabbed with Seacrest during E!’s preshow. Aniston was up for Best Actress in a Drama at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, losing to Julianne Moore, who was honored for Still Alice.
The Friends alum, who was also nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for her work in the upcoming drama about chronic pain, Cake, was snubbed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just days later, when the nominees for the 2015 Oscars were announced.
“I’m the number one snubbed!” Aniston lamented on The Ellen DeGeneres Show of the buzzed-about diss. “That’s the silver lining, right?”
“It hasn’t even come out,” she continued of her film, which is scheduled to hit theaters later this month. “That’s the crazy thing! We’re so shocked and amazed that we have had this much love for a movie that hasn’t even been released yet.”
While Aniston has been narrowly missing awards for her part in Cake, the star said she has been celebrated for the film in different ways.
“What’s been so incredible is the amount of people that have come out to me who are suffering with chronic pain and in this same situation,” she spilled to DeGeneres. Aniston stars in Cake as a woman who is treating her chronic pain with a variety of medications and loses a member of her support group when the fellow sufferer commits suicide. “It’s unbelievable how much positivity it’s bringing to those who are kind of silently suffering. It’s a beautiful, hopeful movie.”
I know she’s being a good sport and she’s being surprisingly Zen about all of this, and we should just really let her have it… BUT, I kind of think Ava DuVernay is the #1 Snub of the Oscar nominations. David Oyelowo is up there too. But, as I said, maybe we should just give this one to Jennifer. After all, people were really, really surprised that she didn’t get nominated, especially after she spent so much money trying to get that nomination. That’s another question I think a lot of us have: does her Oscar consultant do refunds if the campaign fails?

Agree. And I think people saying she was joking is a easy defense and way to shut down the conversation. It falls in line with what Mayer said about her. She’s stuck in her glory days. That her name was huge and pulled in ticket sales. How she’s approached work, her social life, and her pr seems to support this. Only very recently has any of this started to change. I think her name tossed in with Oscar talk may have helped her move out of her delusion. The old game doesn’t work and it’s time she ditches the lbd and triangle stories to rebrand herself as a serious actress.
For the past few years i’ve seen her like this. She’s a smart and successful business woman that flips properties and is a seed investor. She’s also a former big tv actor that uses her financial successes to live out her old fame. Like a Norma Desmond of sorts.

I believe a movie has to shown in Los Angeles before Dec. 31 of the year in consideration to be eligible for a nomination. So Cake had opened to a limited theater release in December 2014 (including showing in certain theaters in Los Angeles) and is therefore qualified for an Oscar nomination . It’s national release is set for January 23, 2015.
The studio who produced CAke sent a screener of the movie to Academy voters (in December I think) for a possible nomination including best actress.
To satisfy academy eligibility requirements, it was in one theatre in LA county. For a week. Not advertised by said theatre, or mentioned on their FB page like they mentioned multiple other Oscar hopefuls. Oh, and the theatre is out in the boonies. AND not mentioned in the LA Times until the day before the last day of the run.

When I first read the Academy Awards nomination rules I mistakenly thought the film had to have its 7-day qualifying run in Los Angeles by December 31, 2014. But in fact, the film only had to ‘start’ the Academy Awards qualifying run before 11:59 pm on December 31, 2014. “Cake” very, very quietly began its 7-day qualifying run on December 31, 2014. Not many people had a chance to see it at all. We won’t know what the movie going public thinks of the film until the wide release on January 23, 2015.
That’s one reason Aniston infuriates people. The coddling of her. The low bar standard. Take the comment about ‘the incredible amount of people discussing their chronic pain with her,’ how amazing all these people coming out to her has been — but two seconds before she claims it’s amazing this movie has gotten all this love and no one’s seen it. It’s hyperbole, and it goes unquestioned because her interviews are highly monitored by her PR flack. She doesn’t get asked questions that clear up the inconsistency.

I think the “#1 snubbed thing” is just an extension of the fact that her potential nomination has seemed to get an extraordinary amount of attention considering the lukewarm reviews of the movie, the fact that it didn’t get a distributor until they created one just for the film, and the fact that she hasn’t been “working on her craft” for years while going unacknowledged. I remember some PR buzz happening as soon as the project was announced, and then again during the filming. I really just loathe Oscar buzz being created because some actress goes without make-up.

I can’t imagine having to suffer through chronic pain. I thought I had it bad when I kept popping a muscle in my calf for about three weeks (and limped the entire time), but I just CAN’T imagine having to go through pain that you think about, all the time, every single day, for YEARS.
And Lilacflowers, you remind me of a cousin who has chronic migraines–has for half of her life, since she was 16, and always has a smile on her face. I didn’t even know she constantly had a migraine until she put a post on FB a few months ago, on her birthday, about how excited she was that this was one of her ‘good days’.
I think this movie would’ve been taken more seriously (by me, at least) if Jennifer had talked less about how empowering it was to go without makeup and gain ten pounds, and more about chronic pain. For me, it’s like watching a movie about a woman who says she learned SO MUCH about racism and racial injustice, by saying something like “OMFG, the KKK were SO mean!”….not much substance there.
And you’d think that it would be something that was expected that she talk about….I’d have left off with the “tabloids are bs”, “this feud between me and SHE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED is bs”, and focused more on my role (and let that speak for my new future in Hollywood), and the business side of getting the movie made. I’m happy you wear make-up and still look good for yourself, even when you hurt. There are others who are suffering from depression or have lost the desire to do such things for themselves because of their chronic pain. Such as the woman that this movie is about. There are people who can relate. Not everyone is as strong as you.
You know, I was depressed for an entire month and literally when I started using scrub again I actually thought the new brand I was using didn’t work (it turned out that I had so much dead skin cells from completely not grooming for an entire month, it took a second time to work). So, yes, I can relate to looking awful because I feel equally awful inside. I’m trying to recover and I literally thought about killing myself today because I saw a picture of some people who bullied me. But some of us don’t have a support system, so we laugh at our own situations as a coping mechanism because we have nobody to talk to.
The point isn’t that we’re laughing at her character, I can’t speak for Lilac or the others, but I was laughing at the awards-baiting uglification. Just because I don’t say I’m not suffering doesn’t mean I’m not suffering or I don’t empathise.

Jennifer is saving face. You don’t hire a consultant and schedule a bunch of interviews for the day after nominations if you didn’t care about it. It’s even more pronounce considering she cancelled most of the interviews. It’s fine to be disappointed but it’s annoying when people act like it’s not a big deal when things don’t work out.

I saw Cake. At home, so couldn’t tell you about attendance. Her performance was good. Not award-worthy, IMO. Not Oscar nomination-worthy, IMO. Aniston should give the Oscar consultant a big tip because her performance wouldn’t have been noticed without the consultant’s help. She certainly got no help or support from the cast or director. Just about the only people who have seen the movie have viewed it for free. The consultant earned every penny.
I’m surprised and second-hand embarrassed for her that she even scheduled interviews for the day after the Oscars to begin with. Did she really think it was a sure thing? It’s so presumptuous of her :S.

I think she was “jokingly serious” especially when you go on to say how people were in tears because you were not nominated for an Oscar. And how does she know she was in that 5th spot. Maybe she was 7th, 8th, 9th or not even really in consideration. Marion didn’t just come out of nowhere. she had an amazing performance in a film that was more loved by the critics (I don’t care about what the critics say per-say) but her film had better reviews than any of the other actresses’ films.

Considering she sank her own money into the project, you think Aniston would approach this film the way a producer does – work to have the film as a whole do well, not just her own performance. From what I understand, Adriana Barraza, who plays the housekeeper, steals the movie. If Aniston had insisted Barraza be included in the promotion tour, and allowed some of the spotlight to shine on her, Adriana might just have a Best Supporting Actress nom right now – which would benefit everyone connected with the film.

She believed 100% that the nomination was hers. She was not hoping or praying. She believed it was hers. And therefore she believes she is the #1 Snub. I saw a part of her Ellen interview and Ellen was running down the nominations she had gotten. She omitted the CC nod.. Aniston before answering the question made sure to mention that nomination. I feel that when she got those 3 nominations she was sure. So sure she sent out invitations to bloggers and reporters for a sit down. That guy at GD said he had never seen such a thing. Yes with the cast; but not for ONE Actor in a film.
The lesson is never count your chicks before they hatch. Yes she kept her press responsibilities for Cake.. but she had to cancel the Hotel thing that was just about her OSCAR victory.

I really think she thought she had this nomination in the bag. She spent millions on this campaign – to the campaigner, Oscar bloggers were wined and dined and bought, distributed the movie by some of her own money, sent “gifts” to Ampas voters etc.
It must have been a real shock to her that she wasn’t nominated. I might have felt sympathy for her but then I get reminded of the way she used her dead ex, ex husband & his current wife, never ever included the other actors/actresses in the conversations, passively agressively snarked at her fiancé and the ring etc for this campaign. Any sympathy I felt went right out of the window and I actually feel a little happy that Oscars proved that they cannot be bought all the time and that they didn’t nominate her.
PS: let’s see if this ruthless campaign has worked in Jennifer’s favour or if it has made her less popular amongst Hollywood. Time will tell – although it does seem like she has no new movies lined up.

And if what the dude said was true–that celebs don’t set up press junkets for themselves i.e. that’s not the norm–I don’t think that that gave her a lot of respect points with the Academy. Which she needs if she wants to be taken more seriously by them (which is what she wants)–especially in future roles.
I do wonder how she’s going to parlay this. She’s got the SAG awards. And then what? Her IMDb is a blank slate for acting and producing projects this year.

So basically, Aniston got Golden Globe and SAG nominations before she hired the Oscar strategist/campaigner, and then was snubbed for the Oscar after she made that hire? Wasted money for sure, but what all this says is she got a SAG nomination (let’s ignore the Globes, which are always messy) before hiring this person?
I don’t know, seems to me like Aniston was hustling before but nothing over the top, and she got rewarded with recognition before the campaigning began in earnest. Good for her and maybe a lesson that less is more when it comes to Aniston.
Nope – she hired the awards campaigner back in October before the voting started for any award.
Jennifer and the campaigner carefully planned the whole campaign starting with blocking the reviews for 4 months.
I don’t think she wasted the money at all. First, she did not finance the film. That came from Chinese investors.
She probably did front some screening and distribution costs, but I imagine there are tax write-offs there that make it hurt less. Same thing, for the awards consultant. That’s a professional cost, as well. If she has the talent and the mojo to follow up her campaign with a rebooted career trajectory, the consultant will have been worth every penny and more. It will have been a wise investment, actually. Time will tell.

Which is sad because she could reshape her image by being humble and saying it just wasn’t her year and that she felt grateful to be in the conversation, but no…can’t do that.

Jennifer uses comedy to hide her pain. In some of her interviews, Jennifer come across as a person, full of rage and anger but she’s acting like nothing is bothering her. She is really, really hurting about not getting the Oscar nom. Jennifer thought she had it in the bag.

I read Jennifer paid the person 2 million and if she had won 3 million. Jennifer’s movie cost 10 million to make and she probably spent 20 million campaigning.

The film did not have a distributor after it premiered at TIFF. The company that pays for the rights to the films covers the cost for promotion. The fact that there is no other promotion for it means there is truth in a story about 6 months ago about about her paying for the release out of pocket and hiring Lisa to get nomination.
It makes me wonder who encouraged her to go forth with this end result disaster. My money is on Justin. He just strikes me as the one who thought this was the best performance ever and egged her on.
She just can’t let go of the spotlight. I bet if she was ordered to not do any PR for an entire year, her fat head would explode. Everyone else who was snubbed has let it go, but only Jennifer is using it for EVEN MORE PR.

“Cake” was a nice film. Good performances, nice Direction, good writing. So were many other films of 2014, some with smaller budgets and some with much larger budgets. It comes down to whether you liked the [FILL IN CATEGORY HERE] better than others who were considered for [FILL IN CATEGORY HERE.]

Just started watching the new season of Episodes with Matt LeBlanc and wondering why JA doesn’t do this? I couldn’t stand ML before this show but now I think he’s hilarious. Why keep making the same crappy rom com over and over when there is a lot of innovative writing happening for tv? I hope she wises up, I’m sure she would get a lot of offers.
I have no issue with anyone trolling for awards; that’s part of their job. But JA’s campaign reminded me how I hated Anne Hathaway for her Oscar campaign. It’s just as blatant, even more so for the fact that no one has seen her movie and there’s been an embargo on reviews until recently. Yeah, #1 snubbed……JA turned a decent performance into the biggest snub of the year. Amazing what PR can do.
If you’ve been following the precursors, Ava Duvernay is not the #1 snub either. It’s Jake Gyllenhaal. He was nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press (Golden Globe), the Screen Actors Guild, the Broadcast Film Critics (Critics Choice), the British Academy (BAFTA), the Independent Spirit Awards. Yet he didn’t make the cut and we have Bradley Cooper instead, who has not been nominated in any single precursor award. Why is no one talking about poor poor Jake? He so deserved to be nominated, and even to win!, for that performance.
#2 snub is Gillian Flynn but of course no one cares about the screenplay categories so her snub was not mentioned much in the press.
Mel — Agree 100% with your selections. And I LOVED Jake’s performance in Nightcrawler. It was a total departure for him and should’ve been recognized by AMPAS.
I’d also add David Oyelowo (Selma), Renee Russo (Nightcrawler), Tilda Swinton (Grand Budapest Hotel, Only Lovers Left Alive, SnowPiercer), Carrie Coon (Gone Girl) and Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) to the bona fide Oscar nomination snubs of 2015. I’ll even throw Clint Eastwood onto the list, although American Sniper was nominated for best film. But he didn’t secure a nomination for best director. Though I didn’t really see or hear of Clint out there hustling for it. So maybe he just wasn’t interested. American Sniper came out late in the awards season too (which never helps) with no festival debut to build buzz around it like Still Alice received at TIFF.
