I hate to admit this, but I never saw Episodes II or III of the Star Wars franchise. Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace was so terrible, I never bothered with the rest. So I have no idea if Ewan McGregor should really be ashamed of his involvement with those three films. Ewan played the young Obi-Wan Kenobi and while Ewan has always been complimentary towards his time spent in the franchise, it also feels like he sometimes wishes he had been doing other other projects. Anyway, while Ewan was at Sundance a few days ago, he commented on the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He had some nerdy things to say about the now-controversial lightsaber seen in the trailer – that’s the lightsaber with two little lightsabers at the hilt.
NERD FIGHT!! Ewan says: “I was a bit dubious about the hilt on the lightsaber. If you know how to handle a lightsaber, like we did, you don’t need a hilt. That’s just one thing I think they might have got wrong.” But he also says that “the trailer looks very good. It looks like they’ve kept the right spirit.”
So what do you think? Does the former Jedi know what he’s talking about? Here’s the thing: I’m guessing that the nerds making these new Star Wars movies know what they’re doing. Their loyalties are towards George Lucas’ original vision, and the Episodes IV-VI. My guess is that only a select few (bad guys, probably) have the “hilted” lightsabers.

I can’t believe I know this, but my husband is a nerdy guy. The hilted appearance is due to a corrupted crystal inside, which makes the weapon unstable. So you’re correct, it will be a sith weapon.

I can’t wait for this movie. Episodes I & II were pretty awful, but I enjoyed Episode III. Suffering through the first two was worth it to see Anakin’s transformation in the third.

He’s a great actor, but I also think he has phoned it in on a few movies. He was OK as a young Obi, but as with all SW movies, the dialogue was pretty bad. The classic remains Harrison Ford telling George Lucas when they were filming the first one something along the lines of “George, who talks like this s$&t?”.
No kidding — it breaks my heart — especially on I — III — that they couldn’t cop a minute percentage of that massive budget on a decent scriptwriter….

So True! And he was very believable as Obi-Wan. After Episode I, I did not watch II & III for a long time. But when my daughter turned 5, my husband had enough of princess movies and decided to introduce Star Wars. We all watched Episode 1-3 together (of course AFTER viewing 4-6). I saw it in a new light, yes, Ep. 1 was and is still terrible, but 2 & 3 are pretty good ( aside from the dialogue between Portman and Christensen). Even my daughter at 5 was rolling her eyes. Long story short, Ewan was fantastic and he shouldn’t disparaged the work he did on the films.
Re the phoning it in comment- that was more directed towards the up? Down? With Love and the other movie he made with Renee Z. I thought he was a decent Obi Wan. There is some episode of Graham Norton where he and somebody else from 1-111 have a “fight” with the light sabers- it is hysterical. And think it’s too funny to be saying that “our light saber is better than yours!”
Harrison Ford: “George, you can type this shit, but you sure can’t say it”. Dialogue definitely isn’t his strong suit 🙂

Lots of things can be confusing when you’ve never seen them or know what they are.
It’s like looking at an orange. While everyone is eating it you just look at it wondering what the big deal is about this orange ball knowing nothing of the taste.
I suggest you watch them for a greater opinion.

I stopped after SW I as well. Hated it & was embarrassed & disappointed for the franchise. Did the same thing w/ the Harry Potter films. Seemed completely unnecessary to keep wasting my time and throwing my money at Hollywood for crap filmmaking, shit casting, & lazy storytelling.

As an avid Star Wars nerd (I mean fan), I love the new badazz lightsaber. And for Ewan to think it’s silly…dude it’s fictional relax! (But honestly I kind of like that he’s bitchy in interviews) I think he may be a bit bitter because these films are probably going to be better than the prequels. I thought the prequels sucked! The last one was only slightly better than the first two because I liked watching the transformation of Darth Vader. I thought the director completely wasted the talents of actors like Liam Neeson, Ewan MacGregor and Samuel L. Jackson in the prequels in favor of a bunch of CG effects. I hope they bring back the balance of acting and special effects in the new films. With different writers and a new director there’s a chance. At any rate, my twelve year old son loves the Star Wars films even more than I do so I look forward to watching them with him.
I thought Ewan did a good job. It must have been intimidating to step into the role of Alan Guiness but I thought he did as well as he could have, I would even call myself a fan of his Obi Wan.
I feel like with as many people who got their hands chopped off so far in the series, a lightsaber crossguard isn’t that bad of an idea.
I must comment on bis fashion choices here. The leather jacket with the bow tie says dweeb to me.
Does he just get hotter with each passing day? I watched Trainspotting recently, and young Ewan is like a beta version that has yet to achieve full hotness.

Ahh personally I liked Episodes I, II and III just as much as the originals. I do not get the hate for them. You gotta admit the light saber fight scenes in those movies were well done. The hilted light saber in these new movies looks terrible. Was not impressed with the trailer of the new movie. The mega overrated Lupita Nogongo and Adam Driver are in those films. I bet they will be worse then Portman and Christensen.

Its nice to know other people like all 6 of them. I can’t stand people who repeatably take a dump on Episodes I,II and III and are always pointing out the ‘faults’ with it. I actually didn’t even mind the acting from even Portman or Christensen that much when the movies came out. I personally don’t get the hype over Lupita Nygongo, who is gonna apear in these movies. I think she is terribly overrated as an actress and as a beauty. I have seen some episodes of Girls, and think Adam Driver( The dude who is rumored to be playing that dude in the black with the hilted lightsaber) is a terrible actor and I hate to comment on his looks, but the dude is far from handsome. Hayden Christensen looked super handsome in the SW prequals. Natalie looked really beautiful in those amazing costumes too.
The new trailer for Episode 7 is nothing special. It didn’t even feel like a SW movie when I saw it.
I love em all too. People bitched about Jar Jar because he was too kiddie/silly? Did they forget senile stickyfinger Yoda in the originals? Both the actors for Anakin sucked, but it’s a rule that there has to be some bad acting in Star Wars. I think people forget that Star Wars has to be a little campy. It’s part of the fun. It’s not all serious business (same thing with Star Trek).
He does know that he starred in Episodes 1-3, right? He really shouldn’t be dubious about anything after Jar Jar Binks and the black Gungans, Amidala dying in Childbirth from a “broken heart”, the trade federation being chinese bug aliens, Wado the thrifty slave owner alien….
You know what I think? Ewan McGregor could flash his sexy smile at me and I would buy anything he says. OMG, he just gets better and better looking, and I haven’t even watched the video (Ewan McGregor speaks!) yet…
