As we mentioned earlier this week, Jason Momoa was at Sundance to promote the second season of his Sundance Channel show, The Red Road. He plays a Native American who teams up with a white detective to investigate a series of crimes. I haven’t seen the show, but I’d probably watch anything involving Momoa. Anyway, while at Sundance, Jason ended up answering a lot of questions about Aquaman and the DC Comic universe and all that. He also sat down with The Daily Beast and ended up talking about Game of Thrones. God, I miss Khal Drogo.
Ripping a guy’s tongue out on ‘The Red Road’: “Oh, that sh-t’s easy! I do that all the time. That’s just another Monday at the Momoa house. ‘Who is it? Go away, or I’ll rip your g–damn tongue out!’”
Playing a Native American: “There aren’t a lot of shows about contemporary Native American people. It just turns into feathers and ridiculous stereotypes. Kill the Indian! So it’s special to honor these people who have been so dishonored.”
Possibly returning to Game of Thrones: Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss even admit to missing Drogo the most, says Momoa. “I talk to David and Dan all the time and we always talk about possibly coming back and how we miss each other, but I’m not sure if it’ll fit into the world. But there can always be flashback sequences. You’ll just have to keep watching.”
Finally scoring a superhero part (Aquaman) in a franchise: “It’s awesome as an actor to know what your future is going to be because I have children and I’ve busted my ass to put food on the table. It’s awesome knowing that I’m going to be in Justice League because my son is the biggest Batman fan and my daughter loves Wonder Woman. It’ll be cool for them to see me in something because they’re not going to be watching Game of Thrones or Red Road anytime soon, but now they can see Daddy kicking ass in IMAX.”
Being Hawaiian, diversity in Hollywood: “I’ve had to bust ass to be in this industry. A lot of things are very black and white. Aquaman is especially cool because being a Kanaka Maoli—being Hawaiian—our Gods are Kanaloa and Maui, and the Earth is 71 percent water, so I get to represent that. And I’m someone who gets to represent all the islanders, not some blond-haired superhero. It’s cool that there’s a brown-skinned superhero.”
First Baywatch, now Aquaman: “It’s a trip. I spent 15 years trying to dig myself out of the Baywatch hole, and now I’m Aquaman. Life is very good.”
I never really thought of it as a diversity/racial issue, but yes, that could be one factor in why Momoa isn’t a bigger star. I really thought he was going to be bigger after GoT – I mean, that was a star-making performance and it’s insane that he hasn’t gotten more offers to be in action movies. We don’t know what he’s turned down, but I’m assuming the stuff wasn’t any better than what he said ‘yes’ to. While I’m really over the DC Comic world, I want good things for Momoa and I’m glad he finally got a major role that people will see.

It is out on DVD. They always release the previous season right before the new season starts. So season 4 should be out on DVD in June. Ebay. That’s what I did.

You can pull up a lot of Drogo action on Youtube, that’s how I originally watched his scenes. There’s one whole video with some tragic love song and the journey of Khaleesi and Drogo, and I cry like a baby.
And if anybody wants a good cry, watch Daenerys and Khal Drogo Broken. The writing is in another language, but the song and video are English. Also, you can watch the hot “look upon your face” scene, as well as the majority of their scenes. I’ve only seen season one on Youtube.

He’s gorgeous, I like him but when it comes to brown-skinned superheroes Marvel has it covered. Iron Patriot, Falcon, Black Panther and now Johnny Storm. Even though Fox own the rights to Fantastic 4, it’s still Marvel.
Id have to disagree with you, those are black actors and heroes. They had the chance to have a ‘brown’ actor for Strange but no. Same with Maria Hill.

There are solo films announced for both Aquaman and Cyborg.
There’s a solo film coming for Black Panther but the other characters you listed are relegated to sidekicks. (And Fantastic Four isn’t Marvel Studios. It’s Fox.)
Possibly didn’t help matters that he turned down Drax in “Guardians of the Galaxy”. Absolutely fair enough and I respect his decision (but I wonder if he looks at Sad Batman and wonders “If only…)

Honestly, I wonder if he does. Because I thought Bautista (in addition to Rocket and Groot) was the best thing in that movie, next to the soundtrack. Dave brought a lot depth and humor to Drax. I think Jason could have done the same had he taken the role.
Yeah, I can’t help but wonder whether he thought that GotG would be Marvel’s first flop because, let’s be honest, tslking raccoon/talking tree. If that is the case, he’d hardly be expected to be able to pick that a lot of people are now going to go see those movies because they’re Marvel movies as opposed to being huge fans of the characters. “GotG” was the one that proved that as long as it’s good, it doesn’t matter the superhero/ine.

They are pretty low key you don’t see that many photos of them over the years.
It probably did not help that after season 1 of GoT, the Conan reboot flopped in the box office and Bullet to the Head with Stallone didn’t do well either. Jason was really good in GoT and I think Emilia Clarke’s performance was at her best when she’s had him and Harry Lloyd to act opposite of. He’s got a lot of charisma and I hope Aquaman opens up more doors for him.
I am glad DC went with him as Aquaman, I am way more likely to see their movies with him in it.
Emilia really was at her best during season 1. I like Emilia a lot, but I feel like she’s not a good enough actress to carry Danaerys’ story on her own. She needs support from other actors.
I hope Jason’s career explodes. Everyone loved Kahl Drogo – which says a lot if you consider he didn’t talk much and when he did it was in a fictional tongue nobody understood. And he seems like a nice, normal guy who happens to be really good looking.
There was also that pesky habit of bending his tiny bride over and raping her. Luckily she straightened that out. The actor was very good to overcome that beginning. He also made Drogo likable when he pounded on his chest and yelled about raping his enemies’ wives, and enslaving their children – of course his pregnant wife had almost been killed, but still.
he never raped her in the books, that was an awkward change. Drogo is awesome.
I really dislike that the TV show did that. There is just so much darkness in those books to begin with, and then they add in a couple of extra sexual assaults. It’s gross.
FWIW, Drogo was a great part and they really cast it well – you could see why Dany would fall for him the way she did.

Oh, I hope he plays the Aquaman as written by Geoff Johns. It’s a more well-rounded character and not the freakish hyperbole that Aquaman has been in the past. He’s a favorite Character: not overpowered to beat everything, actually faces challenges, has a personal side that’s not all sparkles and happy, and has real depth.
Finally! A Momoa post! No words can adequately describe how sexy I find this man. He is not my usual type, but damn he is beautiful.
I like this guy and I’m really happy he scored the Aquaman gig.
Another actor of Native Pacific Island extraction I like is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Jason and Dwayne both just always seem to come across and nice, decent guys, not full of themselves.
He’s also spot-on about the diversity issue and depictions of Native Americans and First Nation’s peoples on film. Time for things to change hopefully.

I am so behind, just now finished watched GoT season one and while I thought Momoa was perfectly cast, I just didn’t think it was really a star making role. Mostly he grunted a lot, flexed his perfect bewbies and wore guyliner like a CHAMP. Seriously, first time I ever found that hot on a dude. I’m glad it’s going well for him, the rumours on other sites were that his attitude and grouchiness were what was holding him back, but of course who knows if true!

I think his attitude and that horrible quote is what hurt him right after his GOT popularity. I actually clicked on this hoping to read something that would change my not liking him, then saw that awful coat.
But because I like to read your opinions on whichever article you’re mentioning, I kept reading. If he means what he said about honoring Native Americans, then I’ll be a fan of his again.
