Kate Winslet: My husband Ned RockNRoll is ‘like a superman… I’m so lucky’

KW1

Kate Winslet covers the new issue of InStyle, likely to promote her role in Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent. Winslet famously took the role as a sort of throw-away, easy money for a few weeks of filming and barely any promotional work. Winslet didn’t even show up to last week’s premiere, that’s how little she cares! But she did do this InStyle interview, because… why not? This probably fulfilled the bulk of her promotional work. Some highlights from the cover story:

Her last pregnancy: “I filmed A Little Chaos during my first trimester. I literally had sick bags hidden under my skirts … I had boobs like a shelf — it was bonkers. I go soft and doughy quite quickly when I’m pregnant.”

Ned RockNRoll as a father: “Ned is really the most fantastic, hands-on daddy. He’s like a superman … I’m so lucky. I can’t believe how lucky I am actually.”

She still claims she doesn’t Botox: “The wrinkles are here and they’re here to stay now. You know, not just the ones where you wake up in the morning and you go, ‘Oh, that will go away in two hours’ time.’ No, they’re there. That’s the way that it is.”

Body confidence: “I still dip in and out of feeling confident as much as the next person, but I can genuinely say, now more than ever, that I really do love the fact that I’m curvy. I’ve got boobs and a bum and a man who loves me. When you go through the sort of scrutiny that I have, you have to choose a means of dealing with that level of judgment. My way has always been to take a good look at how my career is going. The way I see it, I have an incredibly fulfilling, rewarding career that has nothing to do with the size of my arse.”

[From People Magazine]

I’m all for “I’ve got boobs and a bum”… and that makes ME happy. I side-eye “I’ve got boobs and a bum AND A MAN WHO LOVES ME.” Because the message is still that women are in competition for the precious resource of “men” and perhaps if Kate didn’t have a man, she wouldn’t be so happy with her curves? Am I being too nitpicky? Eh. As long as I’m going there, I really don’t think Kate is “lucky” to have Ned RockNRoll, he’s the one lucky to have her. She’s an Oscar-winning actress and a bombshell. Who is he? Why is he some prize? Because he’s Richard Branson’s nephew? Eh.

I can’t get past the name Ned “RocknRoll”. I honestly don’t think I could take seriously a man who changes his last name to “RocknRoll”.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ha! I said the same at the same time. I just wouldn’t even get past the introduction. I just cringe with second hand embarrassment.

      • BW says:

        New word time!

Fremdschämen – Vicarious embarassment. It’s when you’re embarrassed for someone else, who should be embarrassed, but isn’t.

It’s like the little sister of Schadenfreude.

      • Snazzy says:

OMG @BW that’s an amazing word! German really does have some of the best words

      • Imo says:

Sniping about his last name is about as silly as changing your last name to Rock’n’Rolll.

      • Jen43 says:

I know. I can’t get past that name either. I mean, isn’t he old enough to start using his birth given name again?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Great new word, BW.

IMO, really? Making a passing comment that it’s ridiculous to change your last name permanently to RockNRoll is as dumb as changing your last name to RockNRoll? I have to disagree there.

    • Dani2 says:

I couldn’t take a guy like that seriously either, but hey, it’s what she’s into apparently, I hope it lasts.

      • Imo says:

If my husband was passionate about me and my children, his work and our lives in general I guess I would be into that too, despite his name.

      • jenn12 says:

He would need a job first. If my partner’s life revolved around depending on me, I could not respect him.

    • Duchess of Corolla says:

      +1,000,000

      The name says it all.

    • Donna says:

      Yes. That name…I can’t.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I just can’t get past his last name, but if she can, and he treats her well, good for her.

About the wrinkles, and trust me on this one, never say never. I haven’t ever touched my face, and probably won’t, but the first few lines around your eyes are sort of pretty or interesting, I think. I used to say oh I’ll age gracefully and never do anything. But yesterday, I noticed the beginnings of this lines around your mouth, and…they aren’t so cute. So she may feel differently in 10 years. Or not. And even though I still probably won’t do it, I can better understand people who do.

    • Snazzy says:

To each his own right? Although I must admit, any man whose name is RocknRoll and is older than 15 has me worried, but that’s just me 😀

  3. lisa2 says:

I swear every interview I see from so many women say the exact same thing.. I like my curves.. I like my curves.. is it some kind of mantra they say to convince themselves. Then you see these same women trying to lose weight..
The interview was not that interesting and at this point I don’t know if anyone cares about her husband. It just still makes me laugh at the immaturity of his name change.

  4. Emma - the JP Lover says:

Kate has seemed a mite smug to me since her marriage to Sam Mendes. In this interview she sounds like she’s trying to convince ‘herself’ that she’s a confident woman–about herself, her life, her man–and all is right with her world. Okay, Kate.

    • Dee Kay says:

I don’t know anything about Winslet and Sam Mendes’s marriage – what they were like when they were together or what split them up – but my husband and I both realized that we’ve seen more Sam Mendes stuff since the divorce than anytime previously. Mendes has been on a tear since the split: directing Kevin Spacey in a stage production of Richard III (which was AMAZING), plus directing Skyfall, plus producing Penny Dreadful, and I think he’s also directing the next Bond film, right? Mendes has just thrown himself into his career and is on a career high. My husband said, Maybe that’s because of the divorce. Again – I don’t know why or how exactly, but breaking up with Winslet has been fantastic for Mendes’s career!!!

  5. Miran says:

Honestly that does come across as a bit nitpicky, I don’t think she meant it in that context. I think she meant it like ‘my body is what it is, my husband still loves it so who cares’, like she’s grown into her body and accepts it where she may not have when she was younger.

    • MP says:

I read it the same way that as long as she is fine with her body and is with a man who loves her the way she is who cares what the fat shaming trolls say. And I remember all the nasty comments she received after Titanic for having her own flotation devices and so on so I can understand why she might still be a little touchy about it.
I also think she feels she is lucky to have a hands on husband/father to her children who takes care of the kids so she can work. That is still incredibly rare even though it’s 2015.

      • Miran says:

It’s sad that she got that much criticism for her body after that. I remember hearing that even US audiences were calling her fat and was surprised. I was still in Korea at the time and over there if you’re anything over a US 2 the doctors try to put you on a diet, so it didn’t shock me as much hearing it there, but I was absolutely shocked to hear it over here.

      • Kori says:

It’s so strange–she was gorgeous in Titanic. That’s the movie (along with Sense & Sensibilty) which cemented her as my hubby’s #1 celeb crush. And she still is.

    • Lucy2 says:

That’s how I read it too. She’s taken a lot of crap over the years, if she’s happy and confident with him (despite the ridiculous name!) that’s great.

    • tealily says:

Yeah, she says this kind of thing often, but I’m still tempted to give her the benefit of the doubt. Her husband’s self-chosen moniker DOES make him sound like a douchebag, but do we actually have evidence that he is a douchebag? I can’t recall any. I’m sure she’s not looking at how many Oscars a guy has when she’s choosing her spouse. “Fantastic, hands-on daddy” and “loves her” sound like really decent criteria.

  6. Nk868 says:

They are more to each other than who they are on paper. She’s lucky to have a partner she loves, who supports her and is apparently a hands on father. He’s lucky to have her because he loves her. I would be horrified if someone reduced my relationship to our jobs to ask why one of us was with the other, or say one settled. I’m the breadwinner but couldn’t survive without my partners love and support and our partnership, not just day to day but.. In life I wouldn’t want to.

Sorry, that part of the story bugged me but maybe I’m the one being nitpicky.

    • AustenGirl says:

Nk868–THANK YOU! I completely agree with you, and that part of the story really bothered me, too. She has frequently talked about WHO he is–a loving husband, and hands-on father, and someone she finds interesting and admirable.

I’m certainly not in a high-profile career like Kate, but I have more “credentials” and make significantly more money than my husband–but we have a partnership. We are lucky to have each other–and our incomes don’t factor into how we feel about each other.

    • Maria says:

i agree completly. the last part of the article reveals an incredible shallow world view. beauty and professional success or GTFO.

guess what men are more than their status.

      • Carol says:

Can I sit at your table please? When the article asked, “Why is he some prize?” I thought to myself she just told you why: he is a man who loves her and loves their family and is a very hands-on dad, allowing her to work without worry. When I worked, I made slightly more than my husband. Now that I am home with our kids, he don’t consider himself less lucky to be married to me.

      • jenn12 says:

I agreed with the author. My husband is a tradesman and makes less than I do, so I don’t care about status. However, he has a career and is a hard worker. Kate is married to a person who doesn’t do anything at all. It’s hard to respect someone with no career, no job, no anything. He hasn’t worked since they met. I don’t care what gender is taking care of the kids, but you can always tell when someone’s job is being a person’s partner. You need to have your own identity.

  7. Roxy750 says:

Kaiser you are spot on! I couldn’t agree more with your thoughts!! He’s a dinkus do-right and she’s the star

  8. Peggy says:

I’m sure he is not working for his uncle anymore, so he is a stay at home dad.
Kate must be slipping, because she usually married up, or seeing the Branson’s wealth, she thought Ned owned a piece of the pie, only to find out he was a paid employee, that was not cutting it, and let go.

  9. Maria says:

so she won a showbusiness award and has had luck in the genetic lottery how does that make her a better person than him? it could very well be that she is the lucky one and he made a mistake.

we really need to stop to spread the message that the less conventionally attractive person must make up for a lack of beauty.

    • Ethelreda says:

I just said much the same thing. Ned might not seem like much of a ‘prize’ to us, but she clearly loves him, and vice versa. Shouldn’t we get over this sexist notion that women are supposed to ‘marry up’? Surely it’s a good thing that a woman like Kate, with all the fame, money and status she needs, has chosen a man for no other reason than that he makes her happy?

  10. mark says:

‘ I really don’t think Kate is “lucky” to have Ned RockNRoll, he’s the one lucky to have her. She’s an Oscar-winning actress and a bombshell. Who is he? Why is he some prize? Because he’s Richard Branson’s nephew? Eh.’

Because she’s rich and famous? Nice celebrity worshiping there

    • jenn12 says:

I think it’s because he hasn’t a career or life or his own past being married to her.

  11. jenn12 says:

I agree. Be happy with yourself, not that a man thinks you look good. That’s exactly what she was saying. I used to like Kate, but now I think she just runs lines in interviews. Patricia Arquette once said she’d eat candy and junk before nude scenes so someone had the b—s to look normal on screen. Kate wants to be that, but isn’t. Her husband IS lucky to have her. She works hard and is good at what she does. He does nothing at all; he worked for his uncle once. He wasn’t working when they met, either. Look at Adele- her partner is not well known, and doesn’t make as much as she does, But he works hard running his charity and has his own identity. Taking care of children is hard work, and he doesn’t seem to like to work. JMO

  12. Laura says:

Kate Winslet is both talented and beautiful! I wish her continued success in her career. Her personal life is none of my business but I do wish her happiness in that category as well.
