Page Six: Kate Upton’s attitude & ego are destroying her career

Kate Upton

Kate Upton’s career is still chugging along. She’s not all over the place like she was a few years ago in Vogue and on two consecutive SI: Swim covers. Kate appeared in a third Swim issue, but she was conspicuously missing for this year’s edition. What gives? I remember how refreshing Kate seemed as she barrelled to greater heights. She brashly claimed she could “bring back the supermodel. She conquered social media, which was a big reason for her sudden rise to fame. Remember how she danced the “Dougie” and went viral? That was a cute period, and she had fun. Lately, things have changed. Kate’s acting a little punchy in interviews. She’s lost her old enthusiasm.

Page Six ran a long article yesterday about Kate’s terrible attitude, which is supposedly ruining her career. The full article is an interesting read. Here’s a condensed version:

As Upton’s career ballooned, says more than one fashion insider who spoke to The Post on the condition of anonymity, so did her ego. She went from “innocent” to exhibiting diva-like behavior, insiders say.

“She became really unappreciative of her success,” says a fashion publicist who asked not to be named for professional reasons, commenting on her general behavior. “It totally went to her head. She didn’t understand that people had taken a chance on her.”

Another modeling-world veteran says Upton’s demands became ridiculous, including asking for photographer approval on shoots and refusing to be photographed with other models. “Even Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell embrace new models and shoot with them,” the second source says. “If you look at people with those long careers, they know how to give back.”

The secret sniping is the latest setback for Upton, 22, who’s also noticeably absent from the most recent Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

“She really shook up the industry in terms of how quickly you could achieve the usual markers of success,” says Betty Sze, managing editor of industry site models.com. “What takes high-fashion models sometimes years or decades to get, like the Vogue cover, the name recognition, the cosmetics contract …. Kate was able to get all those in the space of two or so years.”

But Upton was convinced she made it to the top alone. “It’s weird that in the press they’ll be like, ‘Your biggest fight was with the industry and the designers,’ and I’m like, ‘No, my biggest fight was with my agents, trying to get them to sign me into the castings,'” she told British Vogue last June.

Her new agents are convinced she has legs as an actress. [But] one Hollywood agent who asked to remain anonymous says Upton’s turn on the silver screen didn’t make a splash.

“Kate is not even on our radar,” the agent says. “If she thinks she can make it as a movie star, she’s clearly believing her own hype. I don’t even remember her in The Other Woman, but pretty, buxom actresses are not exactly in short supply. Without any discernible talent, she will struggle to get taken seriously.”

[From Page Six]

There’s more juicy stuff in there. Page Six lists quotes from studio execs and critics who mock Kate’s acting skills and wooden delivery in commercials. They say the fashion industry is no longer impressed because she’s difficult, which caused her to lose an Express contract. Kate’s full of herself, photogs and mags find her difficult to work with, and so on. Insiders resent how she’s not a team player and now refuses to promote on social media.

Kate has achieved household name status, so she’ll be fine if she drops the new attitude right now. She’s a very good model and shows some versatility. I do have my doubts about her acting skills, but she’s still scoring gigs. Kate just booked a role in William H. Macy’s new directorial project. The film is a road trip sex comedy about two friends (Kate and Lea Michelle) who fight over the same dude during an airport layover. Hmm.

  1. GlimmerBunny says:

God, that last dress is HIDEOUS. Budget saloon madam 😛

  2. MonicaQ says:

Dude, those game commercials she’s in–“Will you be my champion?”–she’s SO. BAD. How the hell is she supposed to carry a MOVIE?!

    • Bridget says:

It’s a tie between her wooden delivery and her ill fitting breastplate costume.

      • MonicaQ says:

Well gotta show off the chi-chi balls. /sarcasm. And what’s funny is, her “character” Athena only pops up in the game to annoy you to buy something.

      • Bridget says:

Girl in video game commercial = boobs. But would it kill them to find something that’s at least flattering?

      • Amy Tennant says:

Oh my gosh, I HATE those commercials. And there’s that one where she’s riding the horse and has her mouth open like she’s yelling in battle, but it’s more like OW MY AREOLAE!

    • Vee says:

Her hair in those commercials looks greasy. The whole shoot is so bad. I hope she changes the attitude and fast!

    • Lindsey says:

YESSSSSSSSS! Everytime that commercial comes on, I mute it. So awful it’s mindblowing. And yes, her hair looks greasy! I was watching tv with my bf and that commercial came on and he said something like ‘why didn’t she wash her hair before she shot this’? Made me LOL so hard

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

MonicaQ, I could not agree more. I think that killed her career with one shot. Unbelievably, just astoundingly terrible. And you know they worked forever to get her up to terrible. She was really, really, really terrible.

  3. Jess says:

How has Naomi campbell stayed so relevant when on the outside she seems rude? Is she just kind toward the people that count in her career (agents, photograohers, etc)?

    • Amy says:

I think in the business it only matters if you’re rude to the people who take your photos or make money off you. You can be the biggest bitch if you’re a staunch professional and make working with you easy for your employers.

    • HK9 says:

Naomi Campbell is an incredible model and a legend and she has decades of work to back that up. She is fairly professional at work, but not in her professional life hence her well known problems but as a model, she’s been at the top of her field since the mid ’80s.

    • Jegede says:

I don’t get it she’s an incredibly unlikeable, abusive (physically and emotionally) indivdual.

At least Kate Moss is known her in London to be nice

I don’t care how ‘fierce’ her photoshoots are, Naomi’s aura is poison.

      • HK9 says:

Naomi’s face & body make people a lot of money to this day. She and Kate are great friends and they both have worked with everyone & anyone of consequence in the industry. Don’t confuse her personal messiness with her work. She’s professional at work but not anywhere else. She knows which side her bread is buttered on and she acts like it. You don’t have to be “nice” but you do have to deliver the goods-and she does.

    • SnarkGirl says:

Kindness doesn’t count for much, professionalism does.

    • TrixC says:

Naomi Campbell is stunning and has a unique look. She looks great in everything she wears. She may be a rude and unpleasant person but I have not heard anyone accuse her of being unprofessional. Kate is pretty but looks like so many other girls, and a lot of fashions don’t work on her figure.

    • oneshot says:

Naomi’s got a hellish temper but was known to be pretty kind to a lot of people who became influential later, plus her actual work and look couldn’t be faulted. And she rose to fame in an era where that counted more than having the public think you’re nice.

    • D says:

The answer is Naomi Campbell was smart enough to focus most of her violence on her underlings and maids.

Rich, prominent people get away with physically abusing domestic workers all the time because as a society we basically don’t give a damn about them. Take the maid who needed to get stitches in her head after Naomi assaulted her – if she had done that to someone “important” in her industry (or exposed her employers to a huge lawsuit by beating one of their lower-level employees) , it absolutely would have derailed her career.

It’s like a male athlete who can keep it cute at work, perform well on the field, and refrain from attacking co-workers, but smacks women around behind closed doors – as long as it’s not affecting his performance or the $$$ he brings in, both his fans and employers will minimize, gloss over, and overlook his abusive behavior.

    • Annalise says:

No one dies a runway like Naomi Campbell – she’s riveting. She’s great even when. She fell. It had to hurt like hell but she just got up laughing and kicked off her other shoe and kept on going with a big smile. (and those legs…)

    • Sarah says:

Naomi Campbell’s career is a bit confusing for me – i.e. why has she been so successful for so long? But maybe it’s true she knows how to work when she is at work.

Kate Upton should be more focused on how short a model’s career usually is. You’re “old news” when you’re 27 and if you want to last longer, you had better be professional and work hard. The career of an “It Girl” is short and then it’s a matter of whether anyone wants to work with you or not. But I guess it’s hard to see that when you’re 22 or so and it has all come at you so fast.

I thought she wasn’t bad in “The Other Woman” but it was a supporting role which didn’t require much of her.

  4. Jess says:

I understand why Moss has longevity. She had bad habits but seems kind.

  5. Jenns says:

I will never see her as a supermodel. A swimsuit model? Sure. But a supermodel. Nope.

    • mystified says:

Me too. To me, the only “original” thing about her was that she was a swimsuit-type model who occasionally did high fashion. My guess is that if she becomes too difficult to work with, the high fashion honchos can replace her with another swimsuit model.

  6. Amy says:

How does a seemingly attractive girl photograph SO badly every time she’s not topless hugging her melons in a bikini?

She is one of the few models/actresses who shows up to events looking so terrible that I could have almost believed the drama about her modeling only being about hype.

Fire everybody Kate. Makeup, stylist, and hair.

    • smee says:

I couldn’t agree more! It’s a case of “looks best naked” coupled with criminally bad taste in everything……..

I totally forgot the gala dress that looks like she whipped off her undies and put them on her head – someone was effing with her there.

    • MoochieMom says:

She has been described as “basic” from things I have read. Basic blonde with big boobs. Even my boob loving husband who gets whiplash for a nice set of knockers isn’t into her anymore. I liked her in The Other Woman and think she is pretty. Just maybe the wrong choices. That black dress is horrid.

  7. OhDear says:

Really? I thought everyone was saying what a great attitude she had, how she’s so nice, etc.

    • That’s what I’ve always heard as well. Whenever I hear stories like these it makes me wonder if the woman is really heinous or if she’s just not a doormat? Plus, Kate is very well known now and once you reach a certain level in your career you can say no a lot more often. Men who are use to hearing you say yes do not like this, then the “difficult” label starts.

      • StormsMama says:

Yeah I don’t buy this. This reeks of some sexist ass trying to get her to show her ass (or just get a piece of it) and saying “I’ll make your life a living hell” and “you’ll never with in this town again” and she was strong enough to still say no.
This has vitriol and sexism all over it.
        Ew

        TeamKate

  8. kri says:

I never got with the fuss about her. As a model-blah. As an actress, god no.

    • candice says:

      EXACTLY!!!!!

    • Beezers says:

Boobs. Her career is her boobs. Period.

      • Sarah says:

But in her defence, I look back now and think that if I was her age with great boobs and no education, I would grab all the cash I could while it lasted. I’m in my 50’s now and I can tell you gravity is a cruel bitch. Work it while you’ve got it. #NotJudging 🙂

  9. Nicolette says:

I read that article yesterday, and her people were going on about how great she was in The Other Woman. Please. She was just a tag along to Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann. And those commercials are laughable, and seem to be more about her cleavage than anything else.

    • briargal says:

Without her cleavage she would be nothing!! Just another female with no discernible talent trying to make people think she has some besides just having boobs.

  10. Jegede says:

I’m surprised how Kate has done so little in the past year.

She went from SI – Vogue covers – Vanity Fair covers – commercials to little this past year

She’s young enough to turn it around but fashion is fickle, and age mate Karlie Kloss’ work rate & T Swift friendship, could mean Kate may have been replaced her as American Apple Pie cover girl.

  11. HipHipHorray says:

    Tits dont always equal talent.

  12. Beckysuz says:

I’ve never gotten the hype over her. Yes she’s pretty, but in a very generic way. And dear god those video game commercials are SO BAD!! Every time they are on my husband asks me why a woman with no weapons is leading the soldiers into battle. I told him her boobs are her weapon lol

  13. Jen says:

One of my closest friends works at a restaurant right next to where Justin Verlander lives in metro Detroit. She said Justin and Kate come in all the time and are endlessly polite, great tippers and pretty gracious about people approaching them as they eat…so, who knows.

    • briargal says:

And ever since he hooked up with this pair of boobs his career ain’t what it used to be. She is so bad for him!!

  14. lucy2 says:

“two friends (Kate and Lea Michelle) who fight over the same dude during an airport layover.” Sweet Jesus. That is one film I will NOT be seeing. What is William H Macy thinking?!? He’s such a talented, established actor, how could he not put together some great little indie with an amazing cast of his actor friends for his first directing job?

    • Anon33 says:

Exactly. That was my exact thought. God that premise is just awful.

    • RobN says:

My first thought, too. How did somebody that talented, with that many friends in the industry, get stuck with those two?

  15. Bridget says:

I think part of the problem is that the fashion establishment has never liked her and only grudgingly hired her in the first place because she was such a big thing.

    • briargal says:

It’s all just because of two big things. Boobs! Wihtout them she is NOTHING!

      • Bridget says:

She’s booked a lot of fashion work, including Vogue. She’s more than just a pair of boobs, but while the fashion folks were happy to hire her and ride her popularity they never accepted her. Remember when she had to buy her own ticket to the Met Ball?

      • KULover36 says:

She got a pretty face too she more then boobs.

      • oneshot says:

she looks like a chipmunk with tits.

The figure wasn’t high fashion anyway, and the face is even less so.

      • Erm says:

You’d think her boobs would actually be a liability in the fashion world. It’s pretty hard to dress big boobs in a way that appears fashion forward and chic. Skinny and small breasted is chic. Her wholesome looks are also a liability in fashion. I think she’s done well to rise against the odds.

Anyway, I really liked her Guess campaign–she fit right in with the models who did it in the early 90s. Her look really is a throwback one to the era where there were supermodels, so I just like that about her and it would be awesome if she could bring back the supermodel.

  16. Kitten says:

    Damn. Tough crowd.

To me, she’s quite pretty and has a men’s magazine look, and I don’t mean that as an insult.
I think she has an accessible kind of beauty (as in, “not intimidating”) and has a great rack, so…yeah, men’s magazine.

    • oneshot says:

what reads as “accessible” to men’s magazines usually reads as “downmarket” in high fashion, Kate only got a foothold in the first place because perv Terry Richardson photographed her.

and since Richardson is no Isabella Blow and she is no Sophie Dahl, her novelty was pretty easily supplanted by the next pretty young thing with a ton of social media followers.

  17. Jessica says:

“The film is a road trip sex comedy about two friends (Kate and Lea Michelle) who fight over the same dude during an airport layover.”

    Sounds sexist and stupid.

  18. Jen43 says:

She is a pin up type to me. I am skeptical about this sudden bad press.

  19. BendyWindy says:

I was just thinking the other day that I hadn’t heard much about her recently. She was everywhere for a minute there. Now I’m constantly hearing about Karlie Kloss and Cara D. Eh. I find them all mediocre.

  20. Abby says:

I kind of don’t buy this. It really sounds like they’re just looking for dirt on her.

  21. Mixtape says:

Ugh, same with the Kendall Jenner criticism–I’m just not buying that girls in this youth-oriented (youth-obsessed?) industry work “sometimes years or decades to get” to the top such that the occasional skip to the front of the line is so offensive. When did they start this grueling hard work–age two?

  22. TessD says:

It sounds like the press is trying to dig some dirt that’s not there. She wants to be an actress and is trying to move away from modeling. Cameron Diaz started out as a bombshell and moved on to become if not great, a decent actress.

  23. Can you not says:

Upton decided that she no longer had to poSe with other female models….which uhm I just want to thank god that the ORIGINAL SUPERMODELS didn’t feel that way…
If you’ll excuse me I’m going to watch the video for freedom 90 and rock the eff out

  24. KULover36 says:

I don’t believe this AR she seems down to earth. I believe she is gorgeous and the hype is she a different kind of model a sexy healthy model.

  25. Jess says:

    Trashy Hooters waitress AT BEST

  26. Kat Matz says:

Watch out Kate Upton’s! Here comes Kelly Rohrbach…SI Rookie of the Year …gorgeous, smart (Georgetown grad) and an up and coming actress!

  27. oneshot says:

So basically, her ‘I have boobs!’ gimmick and her 15 minutes are up.

    Next!

  28. taxi says:

In The Other Woman, she was so bad it was almost funny. I wondered if she had a producer-boyfriend who insisted she get the part. I’ll never believe that she won an audition for that role.

    • Ankhel says:

Leslie Mann did her best in “The other woman”, I felt sorry for her watching it. She had bills to pay, I guess. Everything and everyone else were pretty much crap. Kate Upton looked shellshocked the entire time and had all of two facial expressions. Poor girl, I cringed in my seat. Who told her she could be an actress?

  29. Juniper says:

    She is SO basic.

  30. DottieDot says:

    Career?

  31. Jessica says:

She’s pretty but that is about it. There are SO many other women who are just as attractive or even more attractive than Kate.

  32. Jillybean says:

I love her. Wanted to say shit but I won’t say harsh about other women’s bodies anymore. We all struggle. Good luck Kate. It’s a rough industry.

  33. jenn12 says:

I don’t care one way or the other about her, but it’s funny that her attitude is causing her career issues. They never say that about male actors and models. Someone like Terrence Howard can be a total tool in interviews, have domestic violence issues, and still be hired for a hit show, but she’s “too difficult” to have her picture taken?

    • RobN says:

I don’t know about the Howard comparison. The fact that he’s difficult and vaguely unstable has forced him from big name movies back to TV, and that show wasn’t a hit when they signed him. He was a name the producers could get cheaply specifically because of his behavior.

  34. Anare says:

I have been wondering for some time why she is so popular. I don’t find anything remarkable about her and that includes her boobs.

    • KULover36 says:

It called to each their own.

    • Kimberly says:

Her big breasts are the main attraction for most of these horny boys who go gaga for tits.
She has a cute face but and nice boobs but I agree……she’s not remarkable in anyway or in other words, forgettable.

She’s all hype IMO because of her tits and…….. she’s not suitable for high fashion modelling . The same can also be said for Kendall Jenner, Ireland Baldwin ETC.

As for all the alleged statements about her attitude, I can’t comment on that.
She’s seems somewhat nice and approachable but who knows???

  35. JenniferJustice says:

Her boobs are fake. Nothing wrong with fake tata’s, but wrong to publicly state they’re natural – they are not. Google old pics – she had medium-sized breasts until right before she exploded on the internest. She has implants.
She comes from money and her uncle is a Congressman for Michigan – very powerful in the House. She had every opportunity to get an education – paid for, but chose not to.
It seems she was more of an internet sensation than she ever was in the actual modelling business. People (as in individuals) are interested to look at her and read who she’s dating, but agencies, movies, even T.V. don’t seem to care much. She did do good in showing the world, yet again, that not all gorgeous women need be a size 2. The world has seen this many times, but apparently forgets and needs to be reminded every so often. So, I do give her props for that.
