Sandra Bullock’s 911 call: ‘Someone’s broken into my house. I’m in the closet’

Last June, Sandra Bullock went through a harrowing ordeal when a stalker scaled a fence and broke into her home while she was there. Bullock came face to face with the man outside her bedroom and she then quickly shut and locked the door, hiding in a closet and calling 911. (It’s unclear whether Sandra’s young son, Louis, now five, was home at the time. Sources told US Magazine that Louis was with a nanny.) Police arrested the man, Joshua Corbett, who was carrying a notebook with photos of Bullock and a letter he had written for her, in which he claimed he was her husband. Law enforcement later obtained a search warrant for Corbett’s residence and found multiple assault weapons, including six machine guns. Corbett was charged with 19 felony counts for weapons possession along with burglary and stalking.

As part of Corbett’s preliminary hearing yesterday, Bullock’s 911 call was played in court. (You can listen to different segments of the recording below.) You can hear the fear in her voice as she tells the 911 operator that she’s had a break in, that she’s hiding in her closet, that someone was banging on her bedroom door, and that she saw the man go up to her attic.

Here’s some of what she said in the call, thanks to US Magazine:

The preliminary hearing of Sandra Bullock’s alleged stalker Joshua Corbett is underway, and new details are emerging about the night that Corbett broke into Bullock’s home.

Last June, the Gravity actress, 50, was in her Bel Air, Calif. house when she began to hear odd noises. In a tape of Bullock’s 911 call from the evening, the star can be heard telling dispatchers that she thought the sound was the “wind blowing.”

The 911 call, which was played during Corbett’s hearing on Thursday, paints a scary picture of just what happened that summer night.

“Someone’s broken into my house,” a fearful Bullock can be heard telling the police. “I’m hiding in the closet.”

When asked by a dispatcher if the intruder was still in the house, Bullock breathlessly added, “Yes, yes they are. I just saw them walk up into the attic… It was a man. I’m locked in my closet. I have a safe door in my bedroom. I’ve locked it and I’m locked in the closet right now.”

[From US Magazine]

TMZ reports that Corbett plead not guilty to the charges against him and that bail was set at $2.2 million. This wasn’t Sandra’s first run in with an obsessed, mentally unstable person. She’s had multiple restraining orders against two other stalkers, including a woman who tried to run over her then-husband, Jesse James, with her car in 2007 and a man who stalked her for years, starting in 2003 and again in 2010 after he was released from a seven year stay in a mental institution. Sandra increased her security around 2010 when that other stalker returned, and that may have been when she had the safe door installed in her bedroom. I hope she’s ok and that she has some peace of mind now that this guy is about to stand trial. That had to have been so scary to deal with.

Here are some excerpts from the 911 call. US Magazine and TMZ had different segments so I’m including both below.

Here’s a photo of a guy assumed to be a bodyguard outside Sandra Bullock’s home. This photo is from December and the photo agency Fame reports that “Sandra has installed a higher fence and cameras around her property and has gotten a German Shepard dog.” Her new dog is beautiful! He must be a fierce guard dog too.

God how horrific, especially if her little boy was in the house

    • Olenna says:

Yes, it’s just awful. I can’t imagine how terrified she was! I did read elsewhere, though, that her son was not home at the time.

    • Liv says:

Yep, I’d be terrified. I guess I watched to much Criminal Minds, but I got so paranoid lately, always assuming someone wants to break in. Thank god I’m not a celebrity, I really feel sorry for her. She’s able to hire security and things, but what a life. I can’t imagine being face to face to someone who just broke in. A dog is probably a very good idea, they hear things immediately and frighten people off.

  2. TX says:

I don’t often give celebrities any slack when they complain about fame but THIS sh*t is just terrible. Horrifying. I’m so glad she made it out of that situation safely.

I had a german Shepard and they are the best guard dogs. Good choice Sandra!

  3. bettyrose says:

She’s had to deal with so much crap for a celeb who doesn’t court attention. Doesn’t she mostly live in the deep south when she’s not working?

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

She lives in LA home ( Beverly Hills home) mostly.

      • bettyrose says:

Oh, my mistake. I thought after that horrific post-oscar incident she’d mostly left the Hollywood scene to raise her son outside the craziness.

    • zinjojo says:

She used to have a house in Austin, but I believe she sold it.

    • Bridget says:

She used to live in Austin but I think she moved to LA when she amd Jesse James divorced. I think she spends time in New Orleans though.

      • bettyrose says:

Ok I’m really crazy then, cuz Austin isn’t even the south. I swear I thought she lived in a small town somewhere out of the limelight.

    • AG-UK says:

      @bettyrose
I am from Texas and most consider It the South😄 suppose not deep South but technically SW.

  4. Christin says:

That is scary. It’s also frightening to think this guy apparently tracked her enough to know she would be at that home, at that particular time.

I assume she already had cameras in the home to know where he was. Celebrity or not, it pays to invest in security cameras and driveway alarms.

    • Kara says:

it is frightening but with paps and social media it must be super easy. i mean you can google most celebs homes, how would they ever be safe?

      • Christin says:

Even though she doesn’t seem to type to overuse social media, IIRC, she was attending an awards show in LA. So it probably is easy for an obsessive person to track them, even if they don’t divulge information themselves.

  5. MtnRunner says:

That sounds scary as HELL. That sort of thing would have me on edge for a long time.

  6. The Other Pinky says:

I just want to give her a hug. So scary.

  7. Granger says:

Bone-chilling. I’m not sure I’d ever sleep again if that happened to me.

I don’t get the whole Louis-was-with-a-nanny thing. Where? At the nanny’s house? In Louis’s room? Does the nanny have a bedroom closer to Louis’s bedroom than Sandra does? I’m not throwing shade — I just don’t understand those logistics. If Louis WAS home, then my god, Sandra is one lucky woman that a nanny was there to keep him safe, because … well, frankly, I’d never lock myself alone in my bedroom if my kid was in the house!

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

I read the info on Louis like a “Louis was not there. He was with the nanny”.

    • COMMON SENSE says:

she said on the 911 call that her son was not home, she was alone. I don’t even want to imagine what would have happened if he was home sleeping in his bedroom.
Sweet mother of Jesus I am breathless from listening to that tape, it was like watching a scary movie. WHAT THE F…?

    • SleepyJane says:

At the nanny’s house. She had an award show to attend and wouldn’t be home until late, so he stayed with the nanny that night.

      • Granger says:

Ahh, thank you. That explains it.

      • MtnRunner says:

How fortuitous for the both of them that this guy struck when Louis wasn’t there. At least she was able to focus on just protecting herself and had a safe door for protection. Things could have turned out much worse had Louis been there in another room.

  8. DavidBowie says:

    Poor lady. 🙁

  9. Nerdmomma says:

The woman who tried to run over Jesse James was just trying to do Sandra a favor.

  10. Ally.M says:

How absolutely horrible and scary for her, I was tearing up towards the end of the call. I hope the case goes to trial and he gets locked up for a very long time. This is the dark side of fame.

  11. BengalCat2000 says:

The 911 call makes the situation even creepier. Like a bad 80’s horror film. I’m so glad her son wasn’t home, and of course, so glad SB is safe.

Eta, that is one of the finest representations of a guard Dog I’ve ever seen in my life.

  12. mary simon says:

The downside of fame. Poor Sandra. I hope they lock this guy up for a long, long time.

  13. liz_bee says:

I recently found out that one of my coworkers has had a decades-long stalker. She’s dealt with it for so long that she doesn’t even make a big deal out of it. That sounds terrifying. What is wrong with people? Why would you stalk someone?!

    • Imo says:

Being stalked is absolutely one of the most helpless, vulnerable, terrifying experiences imagineable 🙁
And my cases were relatively middle of the road. But the thing is that is how it starts and you live in fear praying it won’t escalate.
Most stalkers are somehow acquainted with their victim while others are random. I’ve experienced both and I don’t even think I’m in the minority of women who have. Worst part? Having the police tell you to just relax or quizzing you about ex-boyfriends or any overly friendly bar/nightclub encounters. I’m not even exaggerating 🙁
Poor Sandra 🙁 Does anyone remember that young woman from My Sister Sam? That is the first time I understood stalking.

      • Christin says:

I remember Rebecca, and the scary part is the guy convicted was rumored to have lived in a neighboring town (I think that may be incorrect – he had a sister living in the area who tipped off police). That was long before the Internet, and it is scary to think he went to great lengths to find out where she lived.

      • Renee says:

I remember that too. I can’t remember how old I was at the time except that it freaked me out and still does to this day. I had an issue of Seventeen magazine with her on the cover and I couldn’t even look at it afterwards because I would just feel awful. I think that was the first time that I understood stalking as well.

      • OTHER RENEE says:

Rebecca Schaeffer’s murderer obtained her address from the DMV I believe. That’s when they stopped giving out that kind of private information freely.

      • MtnRunner says:

It angers me that the authorities don’t do anything until the stalker actually trespasses or assaults their victim.

Re: the DMV. I had someone with a case of road rage take a picture of my license plate while we were stopped at a light. I learned later that they can pay to get my home address with that information. It’s outrageous that any DMV would allow that information out to the public.

  14. Jess says:

My god, this gives me chills. Poor Sandy, and dealing with it multiple times from different people? No wonder she got a security guard and a dog, I hope they lock this guy up for a long time.

When I was a teenager I had a guy stalk me for a few months and it was so violating, he would come into my work at the mall and refuse to leave, then one morning I woke up and he was in my bedroom just staring at me, my dad had let him in thinking he was a friend! I lost my sh*t and that was the end of it, such a strange experience and I can’t imagine being a celebrity and dealing with this.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, Jess, that is terrible!! To wake up and find him there must have been so horrifying. I’m so glad you’re ok.

    • Renee says:

      Seconding GNAT,

I am glad that you are okay. That is absolutely terrifying!!!

    • Cindy says:

      @Jess
No no no! That’s f*ing terrifying!

Poor SB, just listening to that audio second hand scared me.

  15. Ameoba says:

Wow! I love her and I hate that this is happening to her. I hope she is fine. Everyone has the right to live freely and without fear. Why do these people not get that? This only reminds me of my mum always telling me “One can never be too careful” . She is such a sweetheart.

  16. Tracy says:

It’s one thing to be terrorized by aggressive paparazzi the minute you leave your house, but to have your actual home invaded by someone who is so unbalanced…I can’t imagine how violating the terrifying that must have been. And what if she hadn’t been in or near her bedroom with the safe door when she encountered him? Ick.

  17. INeedANap says:

Ooof, that poor woman. Multiple stalkers and a break in? I hope she gets as many beefy guards, cameras, and gorgeous dogs as she needs to feel safe.

  18. jenn12 says:

Being stalked is, without a doubt, the most terrifying thing you can imagine. I hope Sandra can have some peace once this guy is locked away.

  19. lucy2 says:

The whole thing is so terrifying. When you read about the arsenal he’d assembled…ugh, this could have gone so, so tragic. I’m glad she was able to hide and contact the police, and thank God her little son wasn’t home at the time.

    • PrincessMe says:

That’s the part that scared me the most – he could have been carrying those weapons with him. What if her son was home? What if she was in a different part of the home where she couldn’t “duck out” safely or fast enough?
So terrifying and I’m happy she’s safe (and even happier that Louis wasn’t there). Hopefully he’ll be put away for a very long time.

  20. Debbie says:

That is so horrifying. I can’t imagine what that must be like to have that happen.

  21. OhDear says:

Oh wow, that’s terrifying, especially as the guy had broken in her house. I have stalkers now – they’ve hired a private detective to track my address and once showed up at my job – and I’m still paranoid about sharing my plans and other information with people. Can’t imagine dealing with multiple stalkers, including ones with arsenals. Hope that she is well.

    Also, the dog is beautiful.

    • Imo says:

      Praying for your continued safety.

    • MtnRunner says:

OhDear, I’m sorry to hear you live with that fear. It enrages me that P.I.s can get our home addresses through DMV information. That should NEVER be made public. Our DMV just stopped publishing the home address on our registration receipts because they were being stolen along with garage door openers so the thieves had time to rob the home while the victims were at church, a concert, hiking etc.

  22. OTHER RENEE says:

I don’t understand why he was allowed out on bail PERIOD. Why wasn’t bail DENIED?

    • lucy2 says:

I may be wrong, but I don’t think he’s out on bail. I think bail was set very high so that he wouldn’t be released.

  23. Susan says:

It was 6:30 am. In the tapes she says her son is not home but what I wonder is WHERE was he? He was what, 4 or 5 y.o.? What mother doesn’t have her 4 y.o. son home with her at 6:30am? Why would the child be at the Nanny’s house? That would be REALLY weird. Doesn’t Louie (let me show you I am not a douchebag racist like my ex-husband/beard) live with her? This is the most perplexing part of the whole thing.

    • Catk says:

Hey, Kat Von D, your makeup sucks.

I don’t understand your comments. Are you trying to imply she adopted an African-american baby as some sort of pr move? That’s just … I’m lost for words. And if you read up thread, you would know that her child was at the nanny’s because she was out late for work. Jesus, way to work in victim-blaming here.

    • umph says:

you are over speculating. stop trying to act like a detective

      • Susan says:

I didn’t mean to sound as b&tchy as I did. The ordeal had to be terrifying. To be stalked would be terrible beyond words. Apart from what happened I do find It odd that Louie wasn’t with her. Staying at a nanny’s house, really? I really don’t think so. I just don’t think Sandra is as straight forward as she would have her public believe. She had to have known JJ was a complete scumbag. People don’t hide their racism and love of Nazi stuff from people they are married to in a relationship as “great” as she kept saying theirs was. The adoption was helpful image wise although I am sure there was no intent to adopt an African-American baby to off-set the immense scumminess of her soon to be ex husband. I think it was a bearding relationship gone bad. Maybe Louie was at a “friends” house for the night and she didn’t want to say where, as is her right. I just found that detail really odd. on another note, she has had stalking in the past and money is no object so I wonder why she doesn’t have (better) security. I can’t imagine how terrifying stalking would be.

      • FirstTimeCaller says:

        @Susan
Sandra was out late at an awards show. Louis stayed with his nanny because Sandra wouldn’t be home until very late. That seems pretty normal to me.

    • Laurie says:

Sandra was at the Spike TV awards on the Saturday night accepting her Decade of Hotness award and this happened on the Sunday. It is likely her son was with the nanny for the weekend. But it’s unnecessary to speculate in order to essentially try and bring her down, on a post detailing a truly horrifying ordeal, celebrity or not. Thank god she was okay.

  24. I Choose Me says:

Wow. I got chills listening to that 911 call. She sounds so scared, as I would have been. I’m glad she’s alright and I hope the stalker gets jail time.

  25. Sara says:

I cannot believe she is 50.

  26. I’m not listening to the recordings. What an awful thing to have happen to you–and then to have the world able to hear one of your most vulnerable, terrifying moments? That’s another invasion of privacy.

  27. Roo says:

I love her and so sorry that happened to her, so scary. But that has got to be one of the most gorgeous dogs I have ever seen! Is that a King Shepherd?

  28. raincoaster says:

You can hear how terrified she is, but she’s also very disciplined. Listen to the way she repeats the details with clarity; not everyone would have been so organized under stress. Good for her.

Stalkers are scary. I’ve had two. Turns out most stalkers are stalking civilians, not stars, but the more people who know you exist (ie the more famous you are) the more likely you are to catch the eye of a dangerous loonbat. So celebrities are more likely than non-celebs to have stalkers, but overall, most stalkers are stalking non-famous people.

  29. Crumpet says:

Wow, she has had more than her fair share of scary stalkers! I wonder if it’s partly because she is such a sweet approachable woman. It makes lunatics think they might have a chance at her.

  30. LAK says:

    This is terrifying.

  31. Nathan says:

Driveway alarms would have been key for this. A quick google shows they’re everywhere and not super expensive. Might pick one up for me and the missus 😉
