Yesterday, I talked about the drunkening of Chris Evans, who has been partying his chunk butt (thanks, Kaiser) off during the Age of Ultron tour. Evans is still beloved by fans and still a fragile creature. But he’s drinking on the job, and perhaps the alcohol is revealing his true personality. I don’t doubt that all of the Avengers are enjoying the occasional shot, but Evans has been acting wasted. Some people are content to watch Evans turn into Happy Fun Guy instead of Neurotic Downer Guy. He’s acting unprofessional at best.
Things got worse during an interview with Digital Spy where Evans and Jeremy Renner act like a couple of sexist tools. (These two hit bars together sometimes, so it was a bad idea for Marvel to pair them.) The journo asked what they thought of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow coupling up with Bruce Banner/The Hulk in this movie. Their responses were awful.
Kids watch these interviews, and here’s Captain America and Hawkeye tossing sexiest slurs around. Renner calls Black Widow a “slut,” and Evans doesn’t only laugh like it’s the funniest joke in the world. Evans happily admits that he would have given the same answer. But he would have used the word “wh0re” instead! Evans knows kids look up to him. Drunkface don’t care. Here’s the transcript and video:
Journo: “Fans were pretty invested in the idea that Natasha was with either of you guys. And now she’s with Bruce.”
Renner: “She’s a slut.”

So … all a joke? Jokes can still be sexist. This is pretty gross. I’m struck with how comfortably Evans and Renner toss “wh0re” around like it ain’t no thing. Neither of them displays any awareness of how inappropriately they’re behaving, but I’m more disappointed with Evans. Renner’s always seemed a little shady (even before his divorce mess) to me. Both of them know better, especially in front of kids and BETTY WHITE. Ugh, fake Evans faked it until drunk Evans came out to play.
P.S. Did you know that the Evans beard has a Twitter account? The beard just tweeted, “I spend most of my time very close to @ChrisEvans mouth and can confirm that dumb sh*t comes out of it sometimes. I’ve had a word with him.”

Any guy who casually calls a woman a whore or a slut, I want nothing to do with. They’re both @sses for this. I’m especially disappointed in Renner who has a daughter, I hope he knows she’ll eventually grow into a woman and that this casual misogyny hurts women in society.

Personal anecdote: I once faced sexual harassment on the job. Nothing touchey freely or intrusive, just majorly sexist, from one individual who was threatened by young women and trying to demean me in front of male co-workers. What I picked up was that it was jealousy.
Rather than have the guys like me as a person – he wanted me just out of their midst.
It came to a head (his little b*tchy jokey cutting remarks) one time at lunch, we’re all sitting there having a good time..me and the other guys – and he’s at the table with me and two other male coworkers who were great guys, and cute to boot.
So azzhole, hauls off and says, ‘Hey Bobbity….are you cold?’ I say, ‘no, why?’ He says, ‘because your nipples are hard.’ Silence. Awkward. I try to laugh it off. I was young. No i didn’t go to HR. but I should have.
Bottomline, he was a closeted misogynistic gay male who like one or the other or both of my male co workers, and just didn’t want a vagina in their midst.
I’m not saying he was misogynist because he was gay, anymore than you are misogynist because you are straight – I’m saying men who have problems with women, have underlying issues they may be keeping close to the vest…in other words, I’m not surprised at Renner. I do think he’s closeted and has major resentment towards the opp sex.
Evans is just a weak copycat….Renner gives him permission to be an ahole…so he thinks. They’ll probably get some backlash. Not from geek fanboys who would slit their mothers throat to see this movie, but from like…you know…normal people.

I think that an even bigger part of why they will get away with this comment is because they’re straight, white, good-looking, successful men with a huge fanbase (*especially* Chris, even in this post there have been comments insinuating that it was Renner’s influence, when he clearly said he would have given the exact same answer). This whole film just screams overaged “Bro Fest” with the women grudgingly allowed to join the party. Wasn’t there an issue with not including Johannson’s action figure with the boys? RDJ “complements” a female journalist’s tits and barely a word is uttered. Just boys will be boys and who would not like that complement from RDJ. These guys get away with a lot because the film is a money making monster (but not what I would call high art).

Claire, my judgement of Whedon and his female characters comes from many years of loving his work but finding some of his attitudes towards female characters and feminism a bit dodgy. That said, I think insults could be equal opportunity: if women can be sluts, I know we can think of some men who qualify just as easily for that insult.

I think you’re over-extending the concept when you include objectification as requiring a position of power. Oppression, yes. Objectification, not necessarily. By definition, objectification only requires that the person is being treated as an object (usually a sexual object) and not a complex human person with autonomy and rights to self-determination. In fact, if you do a quick google search, the first definition that comes up as it relates to feminist theory is from Stanford University and clearly states it usually applies to women, but it is not exclusive to women. Besides, even if you insist that women cannot objectify men (which I disagree with), that doesn’t preclude the idea that men can objectify other men. Thus, men can still be objectified.
I also just think this has gotten off track anyways though. Men aren’t objectified to the same degree by society as a whole as women are and they aren’t being objectified in this particular news story, so I’m not sure it’s entirely relevant.

Also, Chris seems like he has a big problem. It’s one thing for an actor to show up drunk once, another to come across as constantly drunk or tipsy to the point that actual film journalists, not just tabloid reporters, are making comments on it in their write-ups and twitter. This isn’t an awards show either where a lot of people get drunk but actual promotion for the movie where they are expected to at least pull it together somewhat…

Not sure if you’ve seen it yet but I saw AoU last night and I thought the Banner/Romanov thing was handled incredibly well. There’s actually a couple of really heartbreaking scenes between the two of them that make total sense as to why they would end up seeking each other out.

These guys are in comic book movies, those movies are marketed towards all age groups including children. Minors are going to be looking up everything about the movie in anticipation of it being released. Children are impressionable. They should not be seeing video of the guy who plays Captain America being so dismissive towards women. Rap is marketed towards an older crowd. Does that make the misogyny okay, of course not.

I’ve done a good deal of calling out on rappers and I get badly flamed as a result – told I’m racist, told I don’t understand the meaning and history behind rap, that I don’t like good music, etc. etc. Note: I’ve never made a comment about “black” rappers, it’s always been just “rappers” who use demeaning and derogatory lyrics about women in their music, but my words seem to get twisted by its defenders.
Anyway, the Evans/Renner stuff is just as reflective of misogynistic behaviour in the movie industry as well as the music industry. GNAT is right to draw an equation between the two. It’s still rampant and makes me very disappointed that so many men haven’t evolved beyond the mentality of 16 year old frat boys.
I guess you’re upset about it not being talked about on this site, but I can give you plenty of blogs, gossip sites, etc that do and have called out rappers for their misogynistic lyrics. It’s odd that you felt the need to bring up rappers and their lyrics in a thread about two normally affable and popular white actors who casually made a sexist comment.
I know. Why bring up rappers? If this poster was comparing one actors behavior during a promotion with these guys, then sure that makes sense, but why bring up rappers of all people? It’s not like these guys used those words while making an impromptu rap which it would make sense to compare what they said to rapper and their lyrics. This comparison came out of left field.
Maybe it comes out of nowhere for you, but it has bothered me for a long time that young men and women are listening to women being called whores on a daily basis. It just struck me as so odd that no one seems to object to that, but this is an outrage. Don’t misunderstand me, this IS an outrage. But I don’t look at any other gossip sites, and so I only know that it is rarely if ever mentioned here. And we were talking about calling women whores, so I asked a question. That being said, from my perspective, I have to agree with others that rap music is continually called out as being misogynistic, while other forms of music are given a free pass. Rap is an easy target for certain people, usually older and often white (I’m thinking of my mom here, not you GNAT) because they simply don’t like the music.
Mind you, if you trace the origins of mic battles in hip hop, it sheds light on the braggadocio which often included boasting about male virility-how many women a rapper has slept with etc. It shouldn’t excuse misogyny, but it lends context which is missing for me in other forms of music that feature sexist/misogynistic lyrics.

Yesssss @ the comment talking about other music genres. I’m a huge rap fan and they’re always called out for that on other sites. Not that they shouldn’t be, but it’s always the go-to for discussing misogynist consumerist culture. I personally think that’s the racial part of it, because pop music, rock music, country are allllll guilty of bad lyrics. Take your typical teen pop rock bands that talk about girls like prizes and we’re supposed to drool over these songs. Or country where women are basically props and are villifief in song for breakups. None of that is ever called out and it’s equally gross.

I understand your comment, and overall, I don’t think it’s out of place. The “bitches and hoes” lanuage of rap repulses me. In this case, though, it strikes me that two actors are joking about a female character within the movie’s context. I wouldn’t dismiss Chris Evans as a person because of it. I also think Black Widow can hold her own against them, and so can Scarlett.
She’s not dismissing it though. She’s simply commenting about an issue that she believes relates to the one at hand. I doubt she intended for it to become such a huge conversation 😉

GNAT there are plenty of black blogs on the internet where plenty of black women speak out against what rappers are saying about us because lets be real rappers are just continuing the tradition of degrading and dehumanizing black women specifically and on a whole other level which reflects the greater black culture and its colorism/ hostility/ anger/ blame inflicted onto us. The reason why other people don’t care about the things black men will say about black women in rap music is because they things said are commonly thought about us and perpetuated in the community anyways. Ok, first, sorry for going off in a huff. I actually was leaving, however, and just got home to see all the comments.
My feelings were hurt because I feel I have stood up for equality many, many times on this site, and I felt my words were being twisted to make it sound like I was giving the argument similar to “black people say the N word, why can’t we?” I have argued against that mindset every time I have seen it, and I was hurt and offended that my thoughts were being translated that way, especially by people I would have assumed knew me better than that. BUT, upon reflection, I can see how it did seem that I was pulling my comments out of the air, and race can be such a loaded subject, it was dumb of me not to see that it might be perceived that way.
I take everyone’s word for it that misogynistic lyrics have been called out on this site before, even though I do not personally recall such an occasion. But I’m not here every day, and it guess I just missed it.
As for whether or not I should have brought it up, I’m sort of baffled by the idea that certain tangents are forbidden. I am Queen of the tangent. I usually don’t get yelled at for it, so I was offended because the only reason it would be inappropriate to bring it up would be if I actually WAS trying to excuse the actor’s comments and point at rappers as a deflection. Which I wasn’t, but we’ve covered that.
Thank you to everyone who tried to understand that my point was that we, as women, should not support or tolerate anyone calling us belittling names. Apologies to everyone who was upset. That was never my intention, and you can believe that or not. I can’t control that.

Probably not because they were talking about the character. Offensive and entitled though the jokes may have been, it fit with the conversation. It’s telling that the whole Black Widow conversation for this movie is on her love life (Beauty tames the Beast; Gee very original Joss Whedon! *cough* Buffy/Angel *cough*.) So much for progress in female superheros!
I just got to see AOU at an advanced screening, and I was dubious about the Bruce/Natasha plot simply because I like that Natasha hasn’t had to be paired up with anyone romantically, but honestly, it plays really well. I’m sure there are people who will be determined to not like because it’s “not their ship” or they just really don’t like Whedon, but it actually provides an interesting glimpse into a side of Natasha we’ve never seen before, especially because other character arcs in the movie, particularly Hawkeye’s, make it clear why her mind is turning in that direction. Bruce and Nat are two people with a lot of emotional baggage and the way they interact is really rewarding and makes for some of the best character moments in the movie. I actually think it does progress female superheroes a lot because it show’s it’s possible to have a romantic subplot for a heroine and yet she’s still a deadly badass and she loses none of her edge. Usually something like this would be used to “soften” or redirect the character but Natasha remains Natasha, she just happens to like a guy. I’m not suddenly a Bruce/Nat shipper (BlackDevil is my ship), but the Bruce/Nat storyline did nothing to diminish my enjoyment of the movie.

Gypsy is a weird term. There are non-Romani nomadic people who identify as gypsies (I have Irish relatives who do, for example) and they don’t consider it a slur.

I’m always surprised when that term is thrown so casually in American media, because here, calling them anything other thant Roma people is highly offensive.
Eternal rule – the worse a country treats a minority, the more of an insult the old general term for that minority becomes.
Basically how Americans used to view black people in the past is how Europeans viewed (and still do in some cases, lets be honest) gypsies. Now both have to be called by their politically correct alternatives, African-American in the US (notice how calling someone black is not considered an insult in Europe as much as it can be in the States), and Roma in Europe (notice how calling someone a gypsy in the States is nowhere near the insult it can be in Europe).

Just because sexist comments are normalized when other slurs aren’t doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t be angered by sexist comments.
I think the difference is, slut and whore, while generally limited to females, are generally behavior based terms. N^**** and others aren’t. I wouldn’t use those words, but I’m going to be honest and say I wouldn’t want my daughter to behave the way the character does. She does, in fact, use her sexuality to manipulate adversaries. I’m not saying the joke was acceptable, just that there a difference between that and a racial slur.

While I think their choice of words was super cringe-worthy and pretty offensive, I feel like they are essentially calling out the fandom for putting Black Widow/Natasha in that situation. The fandom really stirs the pot with their fan-fiction/love stories and they get way too caught up in it.
It reminds me of the Supernatural fandom and how Jensen Ackles blew off the whole Destiel thing (a fictional homosexual relationship made up by the fandom between the characters Dean and Castiel) and then everyone started calling Jensen a homophobe. Like, give me a f-cking break.

I’m saying that it’s possible to make sarcastic comments like theirs and it not be a sign of misogyny and that those comments are also made towards men featured on this site, and commenting on the double standard being applied. There is real sexism and misogyny out there and it needs to be called out, but I’m not convinced that’s what we’re seeing here.
I haven’t seen the Norton interview and it’s not available online for me to see for myself. I’m simply stating that the term “gypsy” doesn’t have the negative connotations here that it does in Europe. It sounded to me as though they didn’t realize how offensive the term is and misread Norton’s response as a joke. Fluffalo isn’t known for douchy behavior, so I was giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Maybe once I see the Norton interview I’ll feel differently, but I’m not taking people’s impressions and making them my own. I’ll judge for myself.

If they are tired of being asked about that and don’t like the way the fandom wants to pair her off with someone, that’s fair. However, this is NOT the way to respond to it. They could easily have said there’s more to the character than that. Actually I’d have loved them for that, but instead they took the worst path possible, one that only perpetuates sexism, and only adds to the acceptance of such words and behavior towards women.

@Kitten, you inspired me to let my voice be heard, so I made my feelings known on Facebook. A gentleman had the good grace to comment and say “maybe their comments were distasteful and disrespectful (MAYBE?!?), but I don’t see how this has anything to do with sexism.”
After banging my head against the wall for 45 minutes and contemplating a move to outer space, I explained that it goes back to the extremely sexist notion that a woman who has multiple romantic partners is a “whore,” while a man who has multiple partners is considered normal and even ideal. And then I told him if he truly didn’t see that this has everything to do with sexism, he would probably benefit from some research on sexism.
I’m pretty infuriated by my firsthand experience with the typical misogynistc male tactic of “lol silly girl crying sexism, this isn’t sexism, WE determine what sexism is.” But I just wanted to pop in and let you know that this kid proved your point completely.
No, I know that’s how MOST guys are. That’s how most women are, too. It’s not really a gender thing. I’m talking specifically about Chris. Like, he is probably completely different depending on whether he is in Los Angeles or Boston. I think he tries to pull off the good guy, but his words and actions speak differently.

I thought their comments were strange mainly because, while I know that we like to read into stories, I never actually got the impression that Black Widow and Hawkeye were a thing in The Avengers. I mean, they were partners and obviously close, but I never got the sexy love vibe. Given what I’ve heard about AOU, I think it is a safe bet that they were NOT trying to make them a couple. Same with Winter Soldier. She kisses him to keep him from getting caught when they are on the run, but I never thought there was more to it than that. The clips I’ve seen of AOU, the relationship between Black Widow and Hulk seems totally different than the other two.
I bet they were tired of interviews and starting to get silly (and, of course, alcohol might have been involved. I’m not excusing the actions, I just think that after that many interviews with the same questions over and over, maybe the ‘real’ people start coming out. My main issue here is the fact this is Captain America and Hawkeye speaking during the promotional tour of what’s likely to become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. That’s one of the worst scenarios I can think of to display behavior like this.

I was thinking about that. I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, and hoping she was just trying to show she was “down” by sort of partaking in the banter with them. I was like, “Well, what would I say in that situation?” I myself would probably feel majorly uncomfortable, but would know better than to call out the actors I’m talking to, so I’d probably make some stupid “joke” to ease the tension.
I think she knew what she was doing, the more she partakes, the more stupid shit they say, the more press the story gets.
I’m upset that so many people are dismissing this because Black Widow is only a fictional character. Given the number of comments this has, I’m sure it’s been stated dozens of times, already, but I’ll reiterate: even slut-shaming fictional characters isn’t okay, because it reinforces really misogynistic and limiting ideas of women and how they’re expected to behave, and teaches people that using such language is okay.
Also, Black Widow’s become one of the most high-profile female action heroes of the last decade, and isn’t as problematic as other female characters in a lot of action franchises. She’s sexy, but she’s also tough and smart, and her narratives don’t hinge on her romantic entanglements. So the fact that Evans/Renner degrade her in such a way is really uncool.

Upthread, I talked a little bit about the responses I got when I stated my opinion on Facebook, and I got almost the exact same response. “I think it was all in good fun because she’s a fictional character, she doesn’t really exist.” Yet another way to devalue women, and to make us feel like we’re simply whining about nothing. Very disappointing. And you’re 100% correct in that this reinforces the idea that degrading women is okay, and that is a huge problem, fictional character or not. There are children who look up to these asshats, for crying out loud.

Yeah, Renner didn’t show as much respect for those that were offended as Evans with the way he worded his apology. Even if it was a poorly timed joke that wasn’t meant to be demeaning, Renner could have worded his statement so it didn’t sound like he was rolling his eyes at the same time.

But I’m not sure if this really fixes it. I think what people assume is that when they apologize that they are truly sorry and I don’t know if that’s the case. I can’t believe that with the millions Marvel is paying him, Renner has the nerve to complain about a “tedious press tour.” Typically, actors get paid extra for doing these tours and give the budget for AOU; it’s a first class ride all the way!
Adding to the chorus of people who find their comments disgusting and very disappointing. Had a positive view of Evans before this, and a neutral one of Renner, since I don’t really keep up with gossip, but now they’re both in the doghouse as far as I’m concerned. And really, the people saying this is no big deal: comments like these are the manifestation of misogynistic/patriarchal view of women being somehow inferior, which is a big deal.

I really used to feel like maybe Renner was going through a post-divorce “I hate women” Faze but looking back he’s always been like this.
Sadly the thing about Chris Evans doesn’t really surprise me. He always seems like two different people. I hope he gets himself figured out. He even physically looks worse for wear, his eyes have huge bags, his face is kind of bloated. I hope he gets it figured out.

Dude, he called her a whore. Literally. Don’t sugarcoat it. Saying someone looks hot on a poster and calling them a whore are two very different things, and the fact you equate them proves degrading people is basically one big joke to you.

No free pass for Evans and Renner. It’s not “boys will be boys” at all. I just won’t tolerate those words being used about women, from anybody, “jokes” or not. It’s not funny or excusable or light hearted. It’s sexist abuse. Straight men do not use these terms about other men or think about other men in this way, it’s high fives all around for getting more (insert derogatory term about vaginas here).
Maybe it’s because I live in the big city but the men I know- gay & straight- generally do not use terms like “slut” or “whore”. I don’t know, maybe it’s because the men I circulate with would have been…politely corrected if they’d ever used those terms around me.

MOST gay men I’ve known would definitely use terms like “slut” or “whore” about other gay men, or straight guys. But not about women. To a lot of gay men, women are divas (in the positive sense of the word) or goddesses.
Most gay men I know are enthusiastic cheerleaders for heterosexual women having MORE sex and owning their own sexual enjoyment. I can’t tell you about the number of female friends I’ve had to educate about the Busse (look it up) or vaginal anatomy in general, or explain about clitoral orgasms as opposed to vaginal penetrative orgasms or about masturbation or encourage them to use a hand mirror to check out their anatomy for the first time or go shopping for their first vibrator together.
Gay men understand what it’s like to be told your sexuality is wrong when straight guys are expected to be prolifically promiscuous
In my experience its been women who use terms like “slut” or “whore” freely about other women. I’ve heard it used about Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton or Angelina Jolie (during the whole Team Aniston/Team Jolie” thing) countless times. I’ve had to call out my Dad’s current wife for using these terms about her own daughter before, my Dad, brothers & I would never, ever think of calling my sister- or any woman- these terms. Even when my physically abusive, alcoholic father was at his very worst I don’t think he ever called my Mum that kind of thing.
It’d be nice if some people on this thread, won’t name names because its not polite to single anyone out- could stop treating men like a homogenous lump and maybe start looking at men like individuals, capable of a wide range of feelings, motivations and responses. Just in the way not all women are the same, all men certainly are not either. Yes, I’m using the “not all men” thing but there’s really no reason to treat us all like abusive, privileged, sexist, stupid sacks of turds. Men’s bodies certainly are commodified and can be objectified by women. Men certainly can be discriminated against by women. I am not patriarchy. I’m a person just like you, I just have an external vagina and ovaries.

Yes. I think I’ve heard other women use the term slut or whore against other women. Although I see why the term is problematic, I have to say, I wasn’t as offended as everyone here was. I guess, I thought he was saying it mockingly as the kind of thing a spurned guy might say about a woman who goes on to another guy. Maybe that in itself is objectifying, but Ive also heard either term used by women here about men too.

Obviously Renner was mocking the journalist’s question, the notion that he (the real life human being, the actor Jeremy Renner) might be jealous of a fictional character (Hulk) being with the fictional character (Black Widow) that the journalist thinks could have easily hooked up with the fictional character that Renner portrayed (Hawkeye). Can anyone see how stupid the question is? Can anyone see that is why Renner facetiously mocked the journalist by playing along and “acting” as if he was a jealous lover? The key word being “acting.” It’s not how Renner truly feels. Do you people even understand that? My God, the backlash over this is hilarious and indicative of our “outrage” culture. Everyone is outraged by everything. Everyone is offended. No one can make a joke anymore because people are too stupid to get it.

This really irritates me. This attitude has gotten so bad that it’s leaking onto make believe characters. This is why it’s so incredibly important to me to raise my kids as feminists. I especially hope that I raise my son to know better than this.
I don’t even follow Evan’s news at all but this was so disappointing…I always thought he had anxiety and thus sometimes says dubious things but this?? Whether he was drunk or not, it cannot be excused. So disappointing.
