Chris Evans & Jeremy Renner call Black Widow a ‘wh-re & slut,’ laugh merrily

Chris Evans

Yesterday, I talked about the drunkening of Chris Evans, who has been partying his chunk butt (thanks, Kaiser) off during the Age of Ultron tour. Evans is still beloved by fans and still a fragile creature. But he’s drinking on the job, and perhaps the alcohol is revealing his true personality. I don’t doubt that all of the Avengers are enjoying the occasional shot, but Evans has been acting wasted. Some people are content to watch Evans turn into Happy Fun Guy instead of Neurotic Downer Guy. He’s acting unprofessional at best.

Things got worse during an interview with Digital Spy where Evans and Jeremy Renner act like a couple of sexist tools. (These two hit bars together sometimes, so it was a bad idea for Marvel to pair them.) The journo asked what they thought of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow coupling up with Bruce Banner/The Hulk in this movie. Their responses were awful.

Kids watch these interviews, and here’s Captain America and Hawkeye tossing sexiest slurs around. Renner calls Black Widow a “slut,” and Evans doesn’t only laugh like it’s the funniest joke in the world. Evans happily admits that he would have given the same answer. But he would have used the word “wh0re” instead! Evans knows kids look up to him. Drunkface don’t care. Here’s the transcript and video:

Journo: “Fans were pretty invested in the idea that Natasha was with either of you guys. And now she’s with Bruce.”

Renner: “She’s a slut.”

Evans: “AHHAHAHAHHA. [left boob grab] I was gonna say something along those lines. A complete wh0re.”

Renner: “A trick, man.”

Evans: “HAHAHAAHA.”

Journo: “Whatever movie it is, she’ll just be the sidekick?”

Evans: “Right, just flirting with everybody.”

Renner: “She has a prosthetic leg anyway.”

Evans: “HEHHHAAH. Leading everybody on.”

[From Digital Spy on YouTube]

So … all a joke? Jokes can still be sexist. This is pretty gross. I’m struck with how comfortably Evans and Renner toss “wh0re” around like it ain’t no thing. Neither of them displays any awareness of how inappropriately they’re behaving, but I’m more disappointed with Evans. Renner’s always seemed a little shady (even before his divorce mess) to me. Both of them know better, especially in front of kids and BETTY WHITE. Ugh, fake Evans faked it until drunk Evans came out to play.

P.S. Did you know that the Evans beard has a Twitter account? The beard just tweeted, “I spend most of my time very close to @ChrisEvans mouth and can confirm that dumb sh*t comes out of it sometimes. I’ve had a word with him.

Any guy who casually calls a woman a whore or a slut, I want nothing to do with. They’re both @sses for this. I’m especially disappointed in Renner who has a daughter, I hope he knows she’ll eventually grow into a woman and that this casual misogyny hurts women in society.

    • goofpuff says:

yep that killed their appeal for me

      • Bobbityboo says:

Renner has appeal? Sorry, he looks like Dr. Smith from that old Lost In Space tv show (and all that that implies).

Also, yes Jeremy Renner, nice strategy there… being a creepy little misogynist I mean…. because everyone knows they can’t possibly be gay.

    • The Other Pinky says:

Renner is gross of course especially now he is raising a daughter. But not surprising, he routinely objectifies his female colleagues. Did you see the clip where he says to Scarjo that any man would love to die between her thighs? It’s from comicon I think. And every time she’s had to fight the dumbass questions about her costume, there Renner is giggling like a school boy.

      • Bobbityboo says:

        Personal

      • mia girl says:

Yeah, makes me think about Renner’s “globes” comment to JLo on the Golden Globes this year. This man has issues. He’s gross. He’s an angry little man.

Plus I think that Hawkeye is the worst superhero. He’s like the parsley of The Avenger movies. Take it off the plate and no one would notice.

      • MCraw says:

        Lmao, I HATE parsley!

      • Bobbityboo says:

Sorry, meant to edit the post above. Disregard.

Personal anecdote: I once faced sexual harassment on the job. Nothing touchey freely or intrusive, just majorly sexist, from one individual who was threatened by young women and trying to demean me in front of male co-workers. What I picked up was that it was jealousy.

Rather than have the guys like me as a person – he wanted me just out of their midst.

It came to a head (his little b*tchy jokey cutting remarks) one time at lunch, we’re all sitting there having a good time..me and the other guys – and he’s at the table with me and two other male coworkers who were great guys, and cute to boot.

So azzhole, hauls off and says, ‘Hey Bobbity….are you cold?’ I say, ‘no, why?’ He says, ‘because your nipples are hard.’ Silence. Awkward. I try to laugh it off. I was young. No i didn’t go to HR. but I should have.

Bottomline, he was a closeted misogynistic gay male who like one or the other or both of my male co workers, and just didn’t want a vagina in their midst.

I’m not saying he was misogynist because he was gay, anymore than you are misogynist because you are straight – I’m saying men who have problems with women, have underlying issues they may be keeping close to the vest…in other words, I’m not surprised at Renner. I do think he’s closeted and has major resentment towards the opp sex.

Evans is just a weak copycat….Renner gives him permission to be an ahole…so he thinks. They’ll probably get some backlash. Not from geek fanboys who would slit their mothers throat to see this movie, but from like…you know…normal people.

      • Abbott says:

omg mia girl. Parsley and Dorito.

      • bros says:

Bobbity, I wish you would have told him you hope it is cold, otherwise what explains his tiny penis?

      • cas says:

I think the “die between your thighs” comment is in regard to Black Widow’s thigh choke hold, which has made an appearance in most (all?) of those movies. The rest of his comments, though, are just an uncalled mess of misogyny.

    • Palar says:

These two are twits and i wont be watching another one of their movies.

      • Esmerelda says:

Ditto. Marvel should fire them post-haste. Generic pretty boy and wasted talent can surely be replaced. Or is this the approved marketing line?

    • funcakes says:

Oh dear. When will these Hollywood pretty boys learn to sit there and look pretty.

And Jeremy should REALLY stay quiet. Just.Stay.Quiet.

    • Alex says:

This is so gross to me and Rennet has a daughter. Not only that but Scarlett is a friend of theirs so this was gross all around.
I’ll just stick to Chris, Mark and Robert who constantly praise women (and have daughters themselves).

Have you guys seen the video where Mark gets all of Scarlett’s typical questions and Scarlett gets Mark’s. It’s great.

      • Katarina says:

Don’t forget Hiddles!!!! He’s a sweetie!!! He once said women should be worshipped and men should kiss their feet. He meant it in a sweet way. 🙂

      • The Other Pinky says:

Wow. Thanks for posting the link.

      • Alex says:

I love Hiddles. He also took the HeforShe pledge that Emma Watson started. Very active feminist as well. I just didn’t mention him because he isn’t on this press tour 🙂
No worries. I loved the video and was pleasantly surprised by Cosmo

      • Ksenja says:

Men that are feminists and really open about it are so hot. My boyfriend is one and I love it. 😉

    • Elisa the I. says:

“casual misogyny” describes this perfectly. How can they not be aware of what they are saying? #naiveme

      • sadezilla says:

Casual misogyny is exactly it, and it’s dangerous. Chris E. was so charming on his hospital visits with Chris P., and now this. It just shows how insidious misogyny is.

    • Samtha says:

Yep. So disappointing. I’ve never liked Renner, but my crush on Evans just wilted like two-day-old lettuce.

      • fritanga says:

Yep. I never found him attractive, but after the Superbowl bet with Chris Pratt and its outcome, I thought Evans was a decent guy. No more. He’s just like any other douchey Hollywood actor: a lucky idiot savant.

As for Renner – he’s a pretty good actor, but has always struck me as sketch in the extreme, so no surprises here. Actually, i think he and Evans have a little thing going here and are feelin’ free! Unfortunately, they’re also tools.

      • Nikki says:

And though I’m a very forgiving person in general, celebrity “apologies” for remarks like these leave me stone cold. Because they aren’t just casual remarks, they reveal a whole mindset that is demeaning to all women. Alcohol doesn’t cause this ; it only reveals their reality when their guard is down. I am totally disgusted.

    • ali says:

ITA and looks like Evans just proved himself a drunk and fraud to boot.

  2. yael says:

    disappointing.

    • Lori says:

It is isn’t it? I have to say I really didn’t expect it from Chris Evans. OH well another imaginary boyfriend lost.

      • a cut above says:

Seriously! I feel like the Imaginary Boyfriend pool is shrinking by the day.

I’m not surprised at Evans, though. He was off my list when I watched some of the behind the scenes stuff from What’s My Number?. Everyone else was sweet and charming, but he came off like a smug, above-it-all d-bag.

      • Algernon says:

I don’t know, Chris Evans has some pretty sexist stuff in the past, and he just got busted on that Kimmel show saying something iffy about women. During the game of telephone he whispered “I love f***ing girls in the butt,” which is fine as a preference but c’mon guy, you’re on national TV and you know you’re miked up and that’s a very objectifying thing to say. I don’t know why Chris seems to be getting a pass on this. He wasn’t “following along”, he freely admits right off the top he was thinking the same thing as Renner. That’s not laughing because your buddy told a joke, that’s *agreeing* with the perspective represented by the “joke.” He’s just as bad imo.

      • The Other Pinky says:

I watched the skimmed clip at what minute mark does Evans say that? I’m no fan but this sounds made up.

    • Olenna says:

Extremely. I’m totally off Evans now. Renner never was happening for me.

  3. SK says:

Ugh. This is revolting. I hope the backlash is epic.

    • Louisa says:

Sadly I think this is the last we will hear of it. Make a racist or homophobic comment and there will be (quite rightly) a huge backlash followed by an apology interview and then perhaps rehab. But make a derogatory comment about a woman. Crickets.

      • Timbuktu says:

        EXACTLY.
Which is why I thought that Patricia Arquette had a point, even though she was mercilessly bashed here. For me, it wasn’t about her not being inclusive in her particular brand of feminism, at all, it was about this.

        @SK:
I always wonder how backlash, when it happens, really affects them?
Really, the only apology I’ve ever seen that made me feel like the person was truly regretful, was when Cumberbatch apologized for the “colored” comment.

I wonder how many stars refuse to learn from there mistakes, walk away thinking they were victims, and the apology was only done because their PR person insisted.

      • Unmade_bed says:

So true! Females, by and large, are such pacifists, we let most everything slide. But even as peacemakers, why don’t so many seem to notice or care?

      • Dani2 says:

I think that an even bigger part of why they will get away with this comment is because they’re straight, white, good-looking, successful men with a huge fanbase (*especially* Chris, even in this post there have been comments insinuating that it was Renner’s influence, when he clearly said he would have given the exact same answer). If it were Chadwick Boseman or Anthony Mackie, the backlash would be EPIC. Like issue-an-apology-within-24-hours epic.

    • Santia says:

They’ve apologized already. Lots of backlash.

      • Elisa the I. says:

        good!
wouldn’t it be great if they really understood why there is a backlash and change their behaviour/attitude accordingly? One can dream…. 🙂

  4. Senaber says:

I predict a quiet rehab stint soon. Who thought it was a good idea to have the “Bros” go on tour together? Yikes.

The beard’s statement is priceless though. I wonder if the marvel machine is running that account.

  5. Tiffany27 says:

Gross. Men who casually use those words are a huge red flag.

    • INeedANap says:

Yup! Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. I honestly see them both differently now.

  6. Tanya says:

I hope ScarJo kicks their sorry asses.

    • kufrt says:

Given that they clearly work out like crazy to actually look realistically buff for the movie and she just turns up with zero muscle tone and sticks on a black catsuit, I doubt it!

      • Algernon says:

To be fair, Natasha in the comics is more curvy than hard body. ScarJo’s physique actually represents pretty well what she looks like in the comics.

      • MaiGirl says:

Yeah, we need Amanda Waller to handle this ish! Suit up, Viola! 😀

    • als says:

I hope Marvel kicks their sorry asses.

    • Kali says:

I hope Heidi Moneymaker comes back on board the Marvel train and kicks their asses 😉

    • jen2 says:

This whole film just screams overaged “Bro Fest” with the women grudgingly allowed to join the party. Wasn’t there an issue with not including Johannson’s action figure with the boys? RDJ “complements” a female journalist’s tits and barely a word is uttered. Just boys will be boys and who would not like that complement from RDJ. These guys get away with a lot because the film is a money making monster (but not what I would call high art).

      • Amy says:

Yup, same with Guardians of the Galaxy barely having any product concerning Gamora. They like our girly dollars but they’re not totally comfortable putting out products for us.

      • Dani2 says:

“This whole film just screams overaged “Bro Fest” with the women grudgingly allowed to join the party.”

That’s the vibe I’m getting as well, I wasn’t too excited about this movie in the first place, but the idea of paying money to see it is a complete turn-off for me now.

  7. AnkitaH says:

I thought he was a cute goof so far, now i am simply pissed off. Idiots.

  8. Ella says:

I didn’t get the joke. Gross.

  9. Miss M says:

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t!
Wasn’t a rumor around that renner was doing shots with Evans? But Evans is the only one to get his diagnosis on this site. Hmmm

If I were cynical and paranoid (and renner), I would thank Drunk Evans for stealing the attention. Nobody is talking about his douche behavior and custody battle and oh Hawkeye is now the soul of this movie (whatever word they used to describe his role). Well played, all.

    • Lori says:

IDK……I think we’re all pretty clear on what a giant ahole Renner is, but this Evan thing is really a surprise.

      • Miss M says:

I don’t excuse his drinking, but this is a bit of overreacting. We are lucky there is no law enforcing diagnosis and defaming someone online…
The tone if the post yesterday was a bit misleading, if you ask me. It said something like they have been promoting it for a few weeks suggesting he has been drinking for a few weeks . When, in fact, they started it last week with the LA premiere.

I also find very interesting that this sane blog bashed Chris H. Unprofessional ism during Thir promotion and nobody is mentioning how he has been the best one in interviews for age of ultron. I feel as if there is always one to be the scapegoat of the moment. Let’s chill ex, these are a bunch of actors promoting an action movie based on comics…

      • Beth says:

        @Miss M

I agree! The witch hunt against Hemsworth during The Dark World’s press junket was ridiculous. If he were really that unprofessional, Marvel would have canned him long ago. You are certainly right about scapegoats.

      • jaye says:

I agree Miss M. I’m not excusing the stupid jokes, but stupid jokes don’t make them horrible people. We’ve all said stupid sh*t, does that make us horrible people as well?

  10. Kath says:

Dammit. Can’t stand Renner but thought Evans had more class/intelligence.

Joss Whedon seems to be trying to make the Avengers more than a macho bro-fest, but this kind of crap alienates the female audience. Hope he tells them to cut out the frat-boy nonsense.

    • embertine says:

If Whedon really is writing the Widow as a love interest, then he’s making the same mistake JJ Abrams did of taking the one female character and turning her into a ‘reward’ for one of the male protagonists. In other words, exactly the same macho bro-fest as always.

I wouldn’t expect any support from Joss “I invented feminism, now where are my cookies, bitches?” Whedon.

      • ClaireB says:

I’ve seen Avengers last night, she’s far from the reward, the relationship they have is complex and beautiful. Don’t judge the movie before seeing it. And yes Whedon have written some pretty good female characters, what’s wrong with that? You’re immediately judging someone because two of his co worker that he has no control over (nor should he) said something stupid, because they’re not like the characters he has contributed developing ?

      • whipmyhair says:

Joss Whedons feminism has always been a bit shady.

Sure Buffy was a kick-ass “strong” (god I hate that term) woman; but the first time she had sex her boyfriend literally lost his soul.

Next time she had sex, it was a one night stand that broke her heart and messed her up for weeks.

Sure she had sex with Riley, and “gross nasty sex with Spike” but once feelings were involved they had to refrain from sex because of the forementioned soul losing.

Essentially she can save the world, and die twice but can’t have sex. Because it is gross and people lose their souls.

      • embertine says:

Claire, my judgement of Whedon and his female characters comes from many years of loving his work but finding some of his attitudes towards female characters and feminism a bit dodgy. It’s got nothing to do with the behaviour of his co-workers. I just have seen a lot of comments, here and elsewhere, expecting Whedon to disavow this crap and I’m like, erm, don’t hold your breath.

Besides which, he is in a difficult position criticising the actors on his own film.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

        Word!

      • claire says:

What does Angel’s curse, etc., have to do with feminism, or being anti-feminism??

  11. Kaye says:

    Not. Cool.

  12. sensible says:

Sexism is everywhere all the time, it never surprises me.

    • Naddie says:

Tell me about it. Ever since I started to educate myself about feminism, I’m nearly going crazy. Everywhere!

  13. Sayrah says:

Wow, that’s terrible. These are considered family action movies. What a couple of idiots! Yep, the obligatory rehab stint is coming very soon for damage control.

  14. Nessa says:

I definitely expected more from Chris. I think his drinking/partying ways are catching up to him. Even just his looks… His face is so bloated these days. He needs to get t together. He doesn’t have a lot going on besides these Marvel movies.

    • BangersandMash says:

Chris is doing it to himself. He finds a way to sabotage these things all the time. I think his thinking was to forsake his pessimistic self and drink because he’s a lot more fun when he drinks. But…. alas, that plan is getting shot down.

Chris Evans is Chris Evans own enemy

  15. INeedANap says:

Scarlett Johannson has been vocal in the past about how hard women sometimes have it in Hollywood. I wonder how she feels about her supposed friends — especially Evans, who has waxed poetic about her before — denigrating her character like this.

And I hope Chris Evans’ mom gives him a good talking to. He’s really close to her, right?

Gross and sad all around. Sexist jokes are still damaging.

    • BangersandMash says:

C’mon…. Avengers is a dude orgy! She is fully aware of what the dude orgy really think about her character.

The joke was just a verbal confirmation of the blokey behaviour that goes on in and behind these movies.

      • t.fanty says:

I know, right? This is obscene, because nobody ever objectifies The Cap. Oh, wait….

      • Kara says:

        t.fanty, you cannot objectify men.

      • V4Real says:

Um yes, men can be objectified. Many articles have been written about it. A writer of one article said something that rings true. ” If we define sexual objectification as seeing people as no more than the sum of their body parts and what those parts can do for us sexually, then yes, of course women can objectify men.

Hugh Jackman asked that the women on the crew cleared the room when he filmed his nude scene for the Wolverine and some of the women peeked anyways. If it was the other way around stones would have been thrown at men who did that

      • Kara says:

V4Real, men cannot be objectified. if you change the definition to ignore everything else and with the goal in mind to not hurt the precious feelings of men who feel so objectified (see the thread on this side about Kit Harrington crying some male tears about being “objectified” by women and the echo he received in the comments) than of course. but you can spin any word around if you want to.

see one of my comments below: you are completly ignoring that men are the ruling class and women are oppressed. it is not a problem if women could objectify men. we cant but even if it wouldnt be a problem. like the article i posted from Jessica Valenti: women can hate men, it makes no difference, only misogyny is terrible, if women hate men there is no problem as women dont have power.

to apply it to your example: Jackman was in no danger, a woman in the same position with men peeking would have been in danger. you cant compare it.

      • V4Real says:

@Kara oh please, step out of the 60’s already. Men can be objectified. Doesn’t matter what people such as you or me say in a comment section of a gossip site. Are you telling me because women in the comment section disagrees with Kit, that makes it fact.

I’m not ignoring that men are the ruling class and yes in general they are. But not every man rules just because he is a man.
You remind me of the ones who say Black people can’t be racist because they lack power. Stop with the Webster dictionary of power. For the people who use that argument do you know some Blacks find it offensive
when you say they don’t have power.

The Jackman situation does compare. He had a right to not be peered at just like a woman would have in that situation. Sexual harassment and objectification works both ways. Or do you belive that men never get raped by women and men have never been sexually harassed on the job. It does happen to women more so than men but it works both ways.

      • Maria A. says:

Men can be objectified too. How many times have I read someone referring to Evans by his Cap-ass.
That said, I think insults could be equal opportunity: if women can be sluts, I know we can think of some men who qualify just as easily for that insult.
Still, I thought Evans was better than this. Whether it’s Alcohol or Renner, he needs to stay away from bad influences, especially as he’s hankering after a more substantial, serious and taken seriously career as a director.
Ya hear that, Chris Evans’ Mother?
Have a talk with that boy.

      • Kara says:

V4Real: by definition its impossible for PoC to be racist. you have really showed your true colors. racism is prejudice plus power!!! white people are the oppressing class with power, not PoC. therefore Poc can never be racists. its impossible. also take a good look at genocides, was it PoC or white people? all big genocides were committed by whites.

also the Jackman example is still wrong. men are mainly raped by other men and male victims are just a tiny, tiny percentage of all rapes.
Jackman was never in any danger, he is a big guy, you would probably also think that if two men follow a woman its the same as if two women follow a man lol. nor where those women in a position of power, his boss for example. that example is full of ignorance.
you and Maria A. really should stop with “what about the menz” we dont need people constantly derailing the discussion to point at how totally hard the life of all those poor men is.

its so crazy that there are still people who want to tell us PoC can be racists and men can be objetified.

      • Lee1 says:

        @Kara
I think you’re over-extending the concept when you include objectification as requiring a position of power. Oppression, yes. Objectification, not necessarily. By definition, objectification only requires that the person is being treated as an object (usually a sexual object) and not a complex human person with autonomy and rights to self-determination. In fact, if you do a quick google search, the first definition that comes up as it relates to feminist theory is from Stanford University and clearly states it usually applies to women, but it is not exclusive to women. Besides, even if you insist that women cannot objectify men (which I disagree with), that doesn’t preclude the idea that men can objectify other men. Thus, men can still be objectified.

I also just think this has gotten off track anyways though. Men aren’t objectified to the same degree by society as a whole as women are and they aren’t being objectified in this particular news story, so I’m not sure it’s entirely relevant.

    • Jenn says:

Please… his mom coddles him. She’s not going to be harsh to her precious, Boston-raised, superhero-playing boy. This is a woman who stalked the IMDB message boards and defended him left and right.

      • InvaderTak says:

This^^^And she was there along with his sisters for one of these premiers.

      • Abbott says:

His mom is on the IMDB threads? Jesus.

      • Kitten says:

Again, what does Boston have to do with it? lmao
Like Boston is the only city where mama’s boys exist?

      • Katie says:

@Kitten, I think Jenn was poking fun, because Chris (and his Mom, based on comments she made on Twitter) act like Boston is this God forsaken Holy land. Like, it’s the best place to live, and the best of the best place to raise a family, and his Mom praises anyone from Boston, because BOSTON. According to Chris, “Boston keeps you humble.” LOL. IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT BOSTON. If you aren’t from Boston, you’re lame.

If you say Boston three times, Chris appears.

      • Kitten says:

“f you say Boston three times, Chris appears.”

        LOL!

oh ok, Katie I didn’t know that. Thanks for clarification 🙂

So gross and sexist. Those words are never okay, but it seems even worse when you look at the comments in context. The sad thing is you know they’ll get a pass from most of the media because a lot of the tabs have that sexist “boys will be boys” mindset.

Also, Chris seems like he has a big problem. It’s one thing for an actor to show up drunk once, another to come across as constantly drunk or tipsy to the point that actual film journalists, not just tabloid reporters, are making comments on it in their write-ups and twitter. This isn’t an awards show either where a lot of people get drunk but actual promotion for the movie where they are expected to at least pull it together somewhat…

    • Dani2 says:

Yup, they will get the same old “boys will be boys, slap them on the back and keep it moving” treatment. I shudder to think what would be the reaction if a female celeb of any calibre said something as clearly offensive as this.
I’m done with these POS dude bros.

  18. Talie says:

He just seems to have a lot of problems, which is always confounding when you see an actor who gets everything that most actors want.

  19. Little Darling says:

This makes me sadder than I would like to admit. If they wanted to discuss it, there are so many ways it could have been playfully discussed. But slut and whore? Those are rapist defense words, and I don’t even like writing that!

That’s the type of talk I would imagine hearing in a college frat house bathroom before a dude or dudes decide to go forcefully “bang” a chick.

I’m revolted. I will not endorse them unless a MAJOR apology is issued. Way to set things back you idiots.

  20. GlimmerBunny says:

I’m not gonna lie that I’m a Romanogers shipper (loved Cap and Natasha’s chemistry in The Winter Soldier) so I wasn’t happy that she has a romance with Bruce in AoU, but this kind of language from grown men about their co-worker (and friend) is unacceptable.

    • Kali says:

Not sure if you’ve seen it yet but I saw AoU last night and I thought the Banner/Romanov thing was handled incredibly well. There’s actually a couple of really heartbreaking scenes between the two of them that make total sense as to why they would end up seeking each other out.

    • Sarah says:

It’s about Black Widow – not SarJo.

  21. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

And this is different from rap musicians referring to women as bitches and hos, how? Where’s the outrage over that? It was a sexist, revolting conversation. Referring to women as wh@res is unacceptable, and I’m tired of a whole genre of musicians getting away with it.

    • Little Darling says:

Here here Gnat! The casual use of calling women bitches and hoes is not okay in ANY context! How can we ever expect to end misogyny and bring feminism to the forefront when we continuously glorify this culture?

    • embertine says:

Um, it’s not different at all. I’m equally disgusted by both.

    • Josie says:

And you are diverting attention from these two assh*les.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m not trying to divert attention. But we have stories about rappers on here all the time, and nobody ever says a word about their use of these exact terms. They praise them for their skill and talents, their looks, or criticize them for whatever scandal crops up, but nobody EVER addresses their misogynist lyrics. These two had a disgusting conversation, and they are being justifiably raked over the coals. Why aren’t rappers held to the same standard?

      • lolab says:

No one says a word? Give me a break. Of course they do on this site, rappers are taken to task for misogyny. Kanye is ripped on all the time.

    • Tiffany27 says:

It’s disgusting when rappers use it too. I’m not sure I get your point?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

My point is that no one ever discusses it. You’re saying yes, it’s disgusting, but when there are stories about rappers, do we ever get comments about their lyrics? No. Why not? Why is that ok with everybody but this is an outrage?

      • Josie says:

Are you kidding me with no one disscusses rappers and their misogyny?
Eminem has been called out on it many times and Faux News claimed rappers are responsable for black men being killed by the police.

      • **sighs** says:

I’ll venture a guess as to say it’s because “they’re just being true to their disadvantaged upbringings-it’s part of their ‘culture'”.

I’m not saying this is my take, it’s just why I believe people give them a pass.

      • AcidRock says:

@sighs – WHAT? Part of a disadvantaged upbringing / that culture is to use words like this?

      • Geekychick says:

@GNAT: I’m sorry, but your threat of leaving really isn’t fair. You started the discussion(might I add, discussion which really isn’t that connected with the main post), claiming that rappers are tolerated. And then, when Tiff. And others pointed out that yes, they are, even mentioning specifical sites and articles even on CB, you find yourself offended. Over what? Bc the others gave you immediate proof that what you’re claiming wasn’t correct. If someone “knew” you on this site, is it an obligation to agree with everything you say?

      • **sighs** says:

        Acidrock- exactly.

    • Merritt says:

Both are disgusting, But you can discuss one without bringing up the other. This really just seems like derailment. I see rappers called out for this behavior all the time. I’m not sure how that is “getting away with it”.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Have you ever seen them called out on here? Because I haven’t. And please just stop with the derailment. That’s such a buzzword, first of all, and I’m not trying defend these guys or deny that their conversation was disgusting. I’m asking a serious question about why there is such a double standard, and why we, as women, allow ANYBODY to get away with calling us whores.

      • Jenn says:

Does it matter WHERE they are called out? I mean, just because we don’t discuss derogatory lyrics on this site, doesn’t lessen the offense. We aren’t discussing rappers right now, we are discussing Chris and Jeremy.

      • Merritt says:

        @GNAT

On Celebitchy? It was covered when Eminem made a vile rap about Iggy Azelea and another punching Lana Del Rey. Outside Celebitchy? Absolutely, I’ve seen the misogyny in rap covered a lot..
These guys are in comic book movies, those movies are marketed towards all age groups including children. Minors are going to be looking up everything about the movie in anticipation of it being released. Children are impressionable. They should not be seeing video of the guy who plays Captain America being so dismissive towards women. Rap is marketed towards an older crowd. Does that make the misogyny okay, of course not.

      • Merritt says:

        @GNAT

I would also add that if you want more social commentary mixed with your gossip stories, visit Jezebel from time to time.

      • Jaded says:

I’ve done a good deal of calling out on rappers and I get badly flamed as a result – told I’m racist, told I don’t understand the meaning and history behind rap, that I don’t like good music, etc. etc. Note: I’ve never made a comment about “black” rappers, it’s always been just “rappers” who use demeaning and derogatory lyrics about women in their music, but my words seem to get twisted by its defenders.

Anyway, the Evans/Renner stuff is just as reflective of misogynistic behaviour in the movie industry as well as the music industry. GNAT is right to draw an equation between the two. It’s still rampant and makes me very disappointed that so many men haven’t evolved beyond the mentality of 16 year old frat boys.

    • Tiffany27 says:

I guess you’re upset about it not being talked about on this site, but I can give you plenty of blogs, gossip sites, etc that do and have called out rappers for their misogynistic lyrics. It’s odd that you felt the need to bring up rappers and their lyrics in a thread about two normally affable and popular white actors who casually made a sexist comment.

      • jinni says:

I know. Why bring up rappers? If this poster was comparing one actors behavior during a promotion with these guys, then sure that makes sense, but why bring up rappers of all people? It’s not like these guys used those words while making an impromptu rap which it would make sense to compare what they said to rapper and their lyrics. This comparison came out of left field.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Maybe it comes out of nowhere for you, but it has bothered me for a long time that young men and women are listening to women being called whores on a daily basis. It just struck me as so odd that no one seems to object to that, but this is an outrage. Don’t misunderstand me, this IS an outrage. But I don’t look at any other gossip sites, and so I only know that it is rarely if ever mentioned here. And we were talking about calling women whores, so I asked a question. I don’t see why it “comes out of nowhere.”

I’m really hurt, Tiffany27, by the implications of your last remark. I thought we sort of “knew” each other, as well as you can on a site like this. I was obviously wrong. I’ll be leaving now.

      • Tiffany27 says:

@GNAT- Don’t leave! What your saying is valid. My point is:
        1. It IS talked about at other sites. If you want it discussed here, bring it up in the thread.
        2. It seemed like an odd thing to bring into the discussion because it’s not relevant to Renner and Evans.
        3. Music, hip hop or not, in general carries some pretty misogynistic undertones so to only focus on hip hop is odd.
It came off as “they do it too, so don’t get mad at the dude bros”

      • original kay says:

GNAT: if that hurts your feelings, I suggest a book called “The Four Agreements” to you.

There are religious references, so if you are not religious, these can be passed over, the contents of the book are life changing.

Also, I must point out, leaving over posts on the internet only leaves you feeling alienated. It will only hurt you, in the end.

You posted what you thought, so own it. Being on the other side of the general opinion is NOT a reason to leave a place where you are content.

      • Kitten says:

        Aw, Gnatty come back!
She probably feels ganged up on–it’s a sh*tty feeling. I can say for certain that she was absolutely not trying to derail-that’s not GNAT’s style.

That being said, from my perspective, I have to agree with others that rap music is continually called out as being misogynistic, while other forms of music are given a free pass. Rap is an easy target for certain people, usually older and often white (I’m thinking of my mom here, not you GNAT) because they simply don’t like the music.
Mind you, if you trace the origins of mic battles in hip hop, it sheds light on the braggadocio which often included boasting about male virility-how many women a rapper has slept with etc. It shouldn’t excuse misogyny, but it lends context which is missing for me in other forms of music that feature sexist/misogynistic lyrics.

Has anyone seen this Tumblr? http://misogynisticlyricsthatarentrap.tumblr.com/tagged/misogyny%20that%20is%20not%20rap

On that note, I’m reminded that I was listening to Queen Latifah’s U.N.I.T.Y on my walk in to work this morning and f*ck anyone who can name a more positive, empowering feminist anthem than that song.

      • **sighs** says:

See, this is what (I think) gnat is trying to say– why does rap get a pass (somewhat) on misogyny just because rap battles used to be all about “braggadocio”? Its pretty much the same in rock as well, no? It’s all about sex, drugs and rock and roll. We’re all disgusted at the rock videos with half naked chicks on cars on all fours, but if nicki minaj puts in her videos, it’s ironic, or if jay-z does it he’s being true to his rap roots.

Misogyny is misogyny, no matter the genre, or the artist.

      • Kitten says:

Where does it get a pass, Sighs?
Where? Seriously, everyone here is saying misogyny is never excusable. Yet no one ever acts outraged over the rampant sexism and misogyny in rock and roll-it’s just passed off as “rock and roll has always been about sex and drugs”.

      • **sighs** says:

Maybe a pass is the wrong terminology. I think it gets defended more than people want to admit.

    • jinni says:

Actually those things are discussed, maybe not on this site, but definitely on others.
Also, I think the outrage may in part be due to fans having a greater expectation of these two actors then for rappers who most expect to put some kind of misogyny in their lyrics, but it was unexpected for two guys that most didn’t think had that kind of mindset to just randomly start throwing out such language especially in regard to the character of their colleague. Lastly, your comment really does look like derailment and deflection.

    • Annemarie says:

What? People talk about the misogyny within rap music all the time. This was unnecessary.

    • Naddie says:

That’s why I despise rappers. One or two aren’t disgustin pigs. And the reason why it’s not duscussed is because anyone who dares complaining about it might be called “racist”. Just see what they’ve done to Lorde.

      • AcidRock says:

@Naddie – Because it’s not racist to disparage an ENTIRE genre of literally thousands of artists, most of whom are black, and many of whom have never used words like this in their entire career? You group them all under one umbrella and say you despise them, based upon the words and actions of only what SOME do. How exactly is that not racist (or prejudiced, closed-minded, ignorant, downright idiotic – take your pick)? I despise all women now because of your ridiculous post – they must all be kinda clueless and half-witted…right?

      • Jaded says:

@AcidRock – we’re not painting the entire world of rap with the same brush, just those rappers (white or black) who use vulgar and demeaning insults against women in their lyrics. Settle down….

      • Nikki says:

No AcidRock don’t settle down, continue to speak up. What Naddie wrote was offensive (dare I say racist)…that shouldn’t be excused like these idiots Chris and Jeremy…but then again people have already tried to derail the topic onto something else.

      • Naddie says:

See what I mean? Did I ever say I despise the black or the white ones? Do you think I respect literally one or two rappers, and all of them are sexist pigs? By the way, in which way I am excusing these two guys here? I’m just agreeing with GoodNamesAllTaken. To be clear, I’m talking about mainstream, if that’s so damn hard to understand. And don’t you dare to call me racist, you don’t know me at all.

    • lewissrl says:

I’ve definitely seen misogyny called out in rap lyrics on this site many times. However, what I don’t see is the same treatment for other genres of music. The music industry as a whole is incredibly sexist yet other genres like rock, country, and pop seem to get more of a pass. I’m not excusing hip hop but I think the entire industry should be held accountable.

      • Jaded says:

Thank you lewissrl – yes, the whole “entertainment” world needs to have a good housecleaning to stop this somehow acceptable but pervasive misogyny.

      • Genny says:

Yesssss @ the comment talking about other music genres. I’m a huge rap fan and they’re always called out for that on other sites. Not that they shouldn’t be, but it’s always the go-to for discussing misogynist consumerist culture. I personally think that’s the racial part of it, because pop music, rock music, country are allllll guilty of bad lyrics. Take your typical teen pop rock bands that talk about girls like prizes and we’re supposed to drool over these songs. Or country where women are basically props and are villifief in song for breakups. None of that is ever called out and it’s equally gross.

However, I don’t think this should necessarily be discussed on this article, specifically because it sounds like derailment. And the implications of the derailment in question can be taken the wrong way. Let’s take this specific article to talk about how gross these two grown men are, and how this will never negatively affect their careers.

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @GoodNamesAllTaken,

I understand your comment, and overall, I don’t think it’s out of place. The “bitches and hoes” lanuage of rap repulses me. In this case, though, it strikes me that two actors are joking about a female character within the movie’s context. I wouldn’t dismiss Chris Evans as a person because of it. I also think Black Widow can hold her own against them, and so can Scarlett.

      • Kitten says:

She’s not dismissing it though. She’s simply commenting about an issue that she believes relates to the one at hand. I doubt she intended for it to become such a huge conversation 😉

    • Unmade_bed says:

Me, too…I think it is just as bad as calling someone the n-word.

    • Lauren says:

GNAT there are plenty of black blogs on the internet where plenty of black women speak out against what rappers are saying about us because lets be real rappers are just continuing the tradition of degrading and dehumanizing black women specifically and on a whole other level which reflects the greater black culture and its colorism/ hostility/ anger/ blame inflicted onto us. The reason why other people don’t care about the things black men will say about black women in rap music is because they things said are commonly thought about us and perpetuated in the community anyways. We are the bottom of the totem pole but there are many of us who say a lot of things about rappers. Maybe it just doesn’t get media coverage cause mainstream media tends to ‘other’ our topics. That’s just my opinion anyways.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ok, first, sorry for going off in a huff. I actually was leaving, however, and just got home to see all the comments.

My feelings were hurt because I feel I have stood up for equality many, many times on this site, and I felt my words were being twisted to make it sound like I was giving the argument similar to “black people say the N word, why can’t we?” I have argued against that mindset every time I have seen it, and I was hurt and offended that my thoughts were being translated that way, especially by people I would have assumed knew me better than that. BUT, upon reflection, I can see how it did seem that I was pulling my comments out of the air, and race can be such a loaded subject, it was dumb of me not to see that it might be perceived that way.

I take everyone’s word for it that misogynistic lyrics have been called out on this site before, even though I do not personally recall such an occasion. But I’m not here every day, and it guess I just missed it.

As for whether or not I should have brought it up, I’m sort of baffled by the idea that certain tangents are forbidden. I am Queen of the tangent. I usually don’t get yelled at for it, so I was offended because the only reason it would be inappropriate to bring it up would be if I actually WAS trying to excuse the actor’s comments and point at rappers as a deflection. Which I wasn’t, but we’ve covered that.

Thank you to everyone who tried to understand that my point was that we, as women, should not support or tolerate anyone calling us belittling names. Apologies to everyone who was upset. That was never my intention, and you can believe that or not. I can’t control that.

Now, I’m going to have a glass of wine.

P.S. I probably used the expression “rap” like Kitten’s mother. I do not know the difference in modern music genres because I am older and I don’t know much about music past the 90s. I will never discuss it again, so don’t worry.

      • Dani2 says:

        *Hugs GNAT*

      • Tiffany27 says:

@GNAT- Let’s take a tequila shot. You know I still love you. I’m sorry I misinterpreted the intentions behind your post.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Hugs, love you back and cheers! Don’t be sorry, Tiffany27. I understand how easily it could be misinterpreted and had I thought it through I just wouldn’t have brought it up. Sometimes the mouth goes off in advance of the brain over here.

  22. kri says:

Wow. Way to kill any love left I had for you, Renner. And Chris…..such a let-down.

  23. Kylie says:

    Evans is a Masshole.

  24. Kali says:

Goddammit. Well, I guess it’s probably for the best as I won’t be distracted by that CapAss .gif if I come across it in the inter webs again.

    • embertine says:

As least if I’m looking at his ass I won’t be wanting to punch him in the face. What a trainwreck.

      • Izzy says:

It seems like the whole Ultron press tour has kind of devolved into a trainwreck, hasn’t it?

  25. Sabrina says:

Very disappointing behaviour from both of them and I hope that this story gets widely published and not just pushed under the rug with all the promotion for this movie.

I fully expect to see an apology from both of them if this story is widely published, however I also wouldn’t be surprised if nothing happens.

    • hnmmom says:

I posted my disappointment with their comments (and our refusal to see the movie) on Disney ad Marvel’s FB pages. I’m sure they won’t care much about one person saying something but hopefully I won’t be the only one.

Jeremy Renner has always creeped me out but Chris Evans should know better, especially given the character he signed on to play. I hope ScarJo makes a public statement, something bada$$ that puts this gross guys in their place.

  26. serena says:

I wonder if ScarJo was offended by those two comments, I would be. They all act friendly but it seems they have no respect.

    • Sarah says:

Well of course it’s the single female’s character that’s part of an ensemble of white dudes that’s at fault for a. being a woman, b. being set up or interacting with the rest of the guy’s club.
Renner’s always been like this and he’s not trying to hide it but with Evans, there’s always someone defending his questionable stances. Oh he’s shy, he’s neurotic, he suffers from anxiety. News flash, so do plenty of other people but somehow they manage without being problematic. Last time I checked slut-shaming wasn’t a symptom of anxiety but of privilege.
And somehow Mackie manages to get more flack for similar disparaging comments.

    • Amberica says:

Probably not because they were talking about the character. Offensive and entitled though the jokes may have been, it fit with the conversation. Reporter basically says according to the fandom Black Widow could go with most of the guys. Yep, she’s a slut. Hahaha. Entitled and tone deaf joke about a character does not = commentary on said character’s portrayer.

      • Sarah3 says:

I’m sure everyone has access to such a layered and nuanced interpretation. The fandom ships all the characters with eachother, I don’t see Captain America or Iron Man being slut shamed based on what the fandom ships.
They could have answered that or phrased that any number of different ways, instead they went for the cheap shot. I have no doubts that in they free time both Renner and Evans wax lyrical about feminism in the arts.

  27. Mia4S says:

I can’t really add much to what’s been said (although the “I thought Evans had more class!” comments are making me laugh. Why did you think that? He’s not Steve Rogers and everything else he does is highly control. Actors are as fake as the characters they play, for better or worse).

It’s telling that the whole Black Widow conversation for this movie is on her love life (Beauty tames the Beast; Gee very original Joss Whedon! *cough* Buffy/Angel *cough*.) So much for progress in female superheros!

    • Algernon says:

I just got to see AOU at an advanced screening, and I was dubious about the Bruce/Natasha plot simply because I like that Natasha hasn’t had to be paired up with anyone romantically, but honestly, it plays really well. I’m sure there are people who will be determined to not like because it’s “not their ship” or they just really don’t like Whedon, but it actually provides an interesting glimpse into a side of Natasha we’ve never seen before, especially because other character arcs in the movie, particularly Hawkeye’s, make it clear why her mind is turning in that direction. Bruce and Nat are two people with a lot of emotional baggage and the way they interact is really rewarding and makes for some of the best character moments in the movie. I actually think it does progress female superheroes a lot because it show’s it’s possible to have a romantic subplot for a heroine and yet she’s still a deadly badass and she loses none of her edge. Usually something like this would be used to “soften” or redirect the character but Natasha remains Natasha, she just happens to like a guy. I’m not suddenly a Bruce/Nat shipper (BlackDevil is my ship), but the Bruce/Nat storyline did nothing to diminish my enjoyment of the movie.

  28. Miss Jupitero says:

    Buh bye. I’m skipping AoU.

  29. Cankles says:

Not surprised, unfortunately. Renner is a known jagoff and I always suspected Evans was a secret neckbeard.

  30. Lucy2 says:

This is incredibly gross. I hope their feet are held to the fire a little with this, it’s not okay it shouldn’t be laughed off. I’m also hoping that Joss Whedon makes a comment as well. F*** these guys.
For all the younger actress who don’t think feminism is important- LOOK AT THIS.

  31. Josie says:

Evans has been an a-hole even before.
Here is an interview where he makes sexist comments about Salma Heyek and Sandra Bullock.

    • **sighs** says:

      Yuck

    • jammypants says:

I don’t condone what he said, but we say the same things about actor’s ass, unmentionables, abs, arms, pecs…the list goes on! We joke about passing them around on certain weekdays. That’s pretty bad as well.

      • Maria A. says:

Yep, and all of that would qualify as sexual harassment where I work too.
        Hmmmmm

      • DN says:

I don’t remember seeing similar comments along the lines of, “This white guy is the one you introduce to your mother, while this MOC is the one you just screw”, but if I did, I’d certainly call the commenter out for it.

Because unfortunately, that’s a sentiment many WOC & MOC have heard said about them. You all seem to be missing the fact that his comment was sexist in a racialized way.

      • jammypants says:

@DN, what does race have to do with this particular incident? There was nothing to miss. I’m a WOC and I did not see anything racist at all about this. Sexist? Hell yes. Ableist? Yep.

      • DN says:

I’m referring to his comments about Salma Hayek (you know, the Latina woman that’s good for screwing, not marrying) – that comment was sexist in a racialized way.

You stated above that we say the same about men, which ignored the racial element.

  32. Maya says:

Damn now I can’t stand these two but I really want to watch Avengers because I love Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet and Mark. Sophie’s choice….

    • Jenny says:

Mark was on the Graham Norton show yesterday. People who went to the taping said Elizabeth Olsen used the term “gypsy”, Graham told her it was offensive, and then Mark and Renner started chanting the word.

Mark is disgusting too. They all are.

      • InvaderTak says:

What?? Even I now that that’s a big no in Europe. What in the world is going on here? I hope Marvel makes all of them apologize and keeps them on the press tour. i will be really mad if take the offensive ones off it and make the safe guys take over. What did Lizzie do?

Really disappointed in Ruffalo. He genuinely seemed better than that. And poor Graham Norton; he’s just trying to have a good show and he seemed to like MR too.

      • a cut above says:

JRenner seems to bring out the worst in everyone.

      • Jenny says:

Elizabeth said her character Scarlet Witch’s style was “gypsy like” and Graham told her it’s better to ues a word like traveler or bohemian since gypsy is derogatory. Then Mark and Jeremy started their change to “get it out of their system”

      • Crumpet says:

So Stevie Nicks has to change her song? Because we can’t say gypsy anymore?

      • Samtha says:

Gypsy is a weird term. There are non-Romani nomadic people who identify as gypsies (I have Irish relatives who do, for example) and they don’t consider it a slur.

Not that chanting it like that wasn’t it a dick move…

      • Franca says:

I’m always surprised when that term is thrown so casually in American media, because here, calling them anything other thant Roma people is highly offensive.

      • A.Key says:

Eternal rule – the worse a country treats a minority, the more of an insult the old general term for that minority becomes.
Basically how Americans used to view black people in the past is how Europeans viewed (and still do in some cases, lets be honest) gypsies. Now both have to be called by their politically correct alternatives, African-American in the US (notice how calling someone black is not considered an insult in Europe as much as it can be in the States), and Roma in Europe (notice how calling someone a gypsy in the States is nowhere near the insult it can be in Europe).

  33. DN says:

I’m not surprised to see this from Chris Evans – he’s made a couple of side-eyeworthy comments about women in the past, like wanting a nice woman, not an ambitious, high-achieving woman, as if those characteristics are mutually exclusive. And this gem about Salma Hayek:

“Sandy’s more the one you settle down with, set up shop with, take home to your mother. But Salma’s the one you yell, ‘Action!’ and just go to town”

    • Bobbityboo says:

Racist too. Good thing Salma’s BILLIONAIRE who could crush him like an ant, disagrees.

  34. Marty says:

Renner has always been a sleeze, but let’s not pretend Evans hasn’t said problematic stuff in the past. The Salma Hayak comment comes to mind.

Regardless they both need to get it together.

    • Sarah says:

It’s better when it’s in the open… that way we don’t have to pretend they’re something other that the stereotypical bro dudes.
Though the fans will find way to legitimize crass behavior, sexism and lowbrow jokes.
Your fave’s problematic, deal with it, don’t excuse it.

  35. Lolo says:

So disappointing, even if they are just discussing a fictional character. I’m not surprised by Renner. He’s a total scumbag. But Chris? The guy who most recently stated that “My mom fought for feminism in her day, so instilled in me the importance of equality. She taught me so much about women.” So, his Mom taught him to be derogatory towards women? Way to go, Ms. Evans. What a gentlemen you raised. But yeah, Renner… he’s a father to a little girl now. And Chris has sisters and a niece, and they think it’s okay to use those words? I have a feeling that Chris and Jeremy are the types of dudebros who call women names if they get turned down at a bar/club.

    • lucy2 says:

“dudebros who call women names if they get turned down at a bar/club. ” That’s exactly what came to mind with this. The character chooses someone other than their characters, so instantly it’s tear her down, insult her, etc. And notice they went right after her, rather than the male character.

    • jammypants says:

Wait why are we blaming his mom for HIS actions? I’m sure his dudebro behavior was directly influenced by…dudebros! Way to discredit his mother’s efforts. If anything, he needs more of her influence in his adult life.

  36. Jay says:

Just ONCE I would love for a journalist to call out the men who say stupid sexist sh*t like this during an interview. I understand journalists’ hands are tied and they can’t be burning bridges with celebrities blah blah blah, but how amazing would that be?

  37. Dońt kill me i'm french says:

If Nathasha is a w@@re and a sl@t ,what was Tony Stark?

I hope Whedon and ScarJo are going to kick Renner/Evans’ass.Jerks!

    • Maya says:

Tony is a manwh*re – there you go, a new word.

      • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

Is there any word worse than ” manwh*re”? Natasha would be a wh@re just because she flirts

    • Evie says:

Don’t hold your breath waiting for Whedon or Feige to call the FratBoys out on their misogynistic “humor.” They are the ones who had Loki calling Black Widow a “mewling qwim” in the first Avengers movie! It is old Anglo-Saxon, Victorian England or old Scottish for calling a woman a “whining c**t. ”
Whedon, Feige & Co. got away with it largely because most people are unfamiliar with the term.

At the time, many articles called out how misogynistic and offensive the comment was. Here are some links:

      http://www.examiner.com/article/the-most-offensive-line-the-avengers-and-why-it-was-brilliant-and-necessary

      http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/04/27/mewling-quim-and-that-mid-credit-smile-in-the-avengers-movie/
      http://www.tqsmagazine.co.uk/what-does-mewling-quim-mean/

And BTW, at the time of the first Avengers press tour in 2012, Whedon actually bragged that his greatest achievment in The Avengers was working that line into the film — and a Disney film at that. And when Hiddleston was asked about his favorite scene in The Avengers — he cited that particular scene and called out the “mewling quim” phrase. He repeated the phrase again, amidst howls at cheers when he made his surprise appearance as Loki at ComicCon in 2013.

All of these remarks are tasteless and offensive. I like a good laugh as much as the next person but it’s NEVER acceptable to demean women in this manner. Not funny at all.

    • A.Key says:

Yeah that’s what gets me. When you get an insult hurled at you, your instinct is immediately to hit back (well mine is anyway). But when a woman gets called a slut or whore, there is literally no equivalent for a man. Calling a man a slut or manwhore (I mean the term doesn’t even exist in the masculine form!) is a joke and even a compliment to some men (yeah, he gets laid often, hell yeah bro, get it, etc).

  38. cari says:

okay, I guess I am alone on this…I thought it was funny. They were just joking. geez.

    • Josie says:

Calling women wh*res and sluts isn’t funny it’s one step away from calling them c*m dumpster. That’s what sexist pigs think of women and condoning that behaviour is what makes sexism part of every day life.

    • Merritt says:

There is nothing funny about men calling women sluts and whores.

    • anna says:

I could think of numerous funny/joking ways to respond to the question they were asked without throwing around those words. You can’t say sh*tty things and then dismiss it as “just a joke”. Perhaps they were trying to be strongly sarcastic, but it came off as offensive.

      • Sarah says:

Isn’t the whole point of jokes to punch up? Punching down, especially in regards to women, isn’t funny. It’s amazing how they manage not to get a rape joke in there, God knows, they were in the neighborhood.

    • Unmade_bed says:

This comment is why people can still get away with degrading women. What causes women to be so callous toward feminism?

    • meme says:

In the future, there will be no more joking unless EVERYONE agrees it’s funny. It’s going to be a very boring politically correct world. One can’t even kid around anymore. Someone is always offended.

    • Grace says:

I sort of don’t get the hoopla either. I don’t think the joke was funny but I wasn’t as offended by it as most people are on this site.

      • marshmellow says:

Imagine if they were using derogatory slurs about any other minority character…

        Question about Blade’s criminal activities: “He’s a n***er, trolololol!”

        Question about Bane’s costume: “He’s a b**ner, trololol!”

Question about Daken kissing Bullseye: “He’s a f*g, trololol!”

Just because sexist comments are normalized when other slurs aren’t doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t be angered by sexist comments.

      • Amberica says:

I think the difference is, slut and whore, while generally limited to females, are generally behavior based terms. N^**** and others aren’t. I wouldn’t use those words, but I’m going to be honest and say I wouldn’t want my daughter to behave the way the character does. She does, in fact, use her sexuality to manipulate adversaries. I’m not saying the joke was acceptable, just that there a difference between that and a racial slur.

  39. Mom2two says:

Really disapponting coming from the two of them and considering how many women do go to Marvel movies. I was on the fence about seeing AoU. I’ll wait until cable.

  40. j says:

people who went to graham norton taping said Ruffalo was making pedo jokes and kind of offended the comedian there with them, it was gross apparently. bet you it gets cut though

    • jinni says:

Eww. Really? That so gross. All of this success is going to their heads.

    • Kara says:

i didnt hear anything about that, but about the G-slur, they were allegedly chanting it.

i agree it will be cut, i dont see them airing that. too bad.

    • ican'tsnap says:

Awesome! Way to perpetuate the image of the backward American abroad, guys! Thanks a lot.

  41. Britt says:

BUT, BUT, BUT YOU GUUUUUYYYYSSS, everyone makes mistakes!! IT WAS JUST A JOKE!!!! They are human!!! Waaaaaahhhhh! Put down the pitchforks! We are all guilty of laughing at tasteless humor or saying something offensive!!!!11!!!!!!11!!! /sarcasm

This is sad, because there are kids who probably look up to the Black Widow character and here we have Evans, who plays Captain America (who kids really look up to), and Renner calling her a wh*re and sl*t.

  42. SarahP says:

Oh Dorito Meatball! You confirmed my worst fears! Finally realised he is a misogynistic, alcoholic douche-bag with a Peter Pan Syndrome. I hope he gets his sh*t together! I kind of still have a soft spot for him, dammit!!!!!!!!
A lot of actors sometimes say the wrong things, make mistakes…but at least they learn from it and apologise. Example: The Tumblr God himself Mr Benedict Cumberbatch also used the word “colored” and when backlash happened, he quickly realised his mistake and profusely apologised. These “bros” don’t know what they have done, and are happily posting pictures/tweets of how humble/lucky they are to promote these movies!

    • Jamie says:

“…a misogynistic, alcoholic douche-bag with a Peter Pan Syndrome.” YES. If Chris wasn’t an actor, he’d totally be back in Boston, hitting up clubs/bars non-stop and then heading home to “sleep in his Mom’s bed” (as he once said). Everyone is wondering why he’s the only childless member of the cast. There’s an obvious reason for it.

      • Kara says:

a good reason i might add. fantastic news that he does not have children.

      • misstee says:

Yeah because childless people are by default the dregs of society dragging everyone down with their crappy attitudes….

      • original kay says:

        I am not wondering that.

      • jammypants says:

ugh can we stop generalizing single people as problematic? On a topic about perpetuating damaging stereotypes, this is yet another one.

But on the topic of Chris, he’s an idiot.

  43. t.fanty says:

This is a storm on a tea cup. If we want to get analytical, this is an entirely appropriate response elicited by a question about a fandom that wants to define the female character by whom she is banging. I’m not saying it isn’t a dumb joke, but it was elicited by a fandom that wants to see the strong woman as someone’s girlfriend. Hell, she should be a sl*t, and not give a damn about it.

    • Jamie says:

That’s very true. The fandom can write all the smut and ridiculous, sometimes offensive fan- fiction they want and nobody seems to care.

      • Maria A. says:

I make it a point to avoid all of the fanfic and ‘shipping’ that fandom produces. Based on what my friend described to me, that’s one icky territory and only the strong of stomach dares go there to face the obsessive weirdness of it all.

    • Kitten says:

      SO DAMN TRUE, T. Fanty.

    • LaylaP says:

While I think their choice of words was super cringe-worthy and pretty offensive, I feel like they are essentially calling out the fandom for putting Black Widow/Natasha in that situation. The fandom really stirs the pot with their fan-fiction/love stories and they get way too caught up in it.

It reminds me of the Supernatural fandom and how Jensen Ackles blew off the whole Destiel thing (a fictional homosexual relationship made up by the fandom between the characters Dean and Castiel) and then everyone started calling Jensen a homophobe. Like, give me a f-cking break.

    • MtnRunner says:

I agree that the comments were inappropriate for an interview, but I’ve seen this kind of joking and participated in it here and don’t see what the fuss is about. God knows the kind of smutty objectification that happens all over social media with Fassy, Capn Sexy, Hiddles, Chemboy et all and no women are accused of whatever the male version of misogyny is. Is any and all joking in this manner about sexy, attractive, desirable individuals wrong?

I’m no fan of Renner — he gives me douche vibes — but I wouldn’t take that one comment and form an entire opinion about him or Evans. Same with the Ruffalo criticisms on this thread. Gypsy doesn’t have the same negative connotations here in the US and was likely an innocent mistake, not a sign of douchebaggery.

      • Josie says:

How can you equalize the objectification of those men to the sexim and misogyny women endure almost every day in any form, stop making the men victims.
And you are seriously defending the racial slur those idiots used in that interview even though Graham Norton told them not do it several times?

      • j says:

i wasn’t commenting on the g-word thing re Ruffalo, mtnrunner. he was making repeated jokes about Josh Widdocombe being into very underage girls (the guy used to write for Dora) to the point where people got uncomfortable. i don’t even get why his mind went there

      • Algernon says:

I could give them on a pass on the “gypsy” thing simply because the negative connotations aren’t as widely known here in the US, but the *minute* the host of the show is telling you it’s an offensive slur, you apologize. “Oh, I didn’t know that, I’m so sorry. Let me rephrase, they’re vagabonds…” and you don’t repeat it, you don’t start chanting it. That’s the part I don’t like, that they doubled down on it.

      • MtnRunner says:

“How can you equalize the objectification of those men to the sexim and misogyny women endure almost every day in any form”

I’m not equalizing it, Josie. I’m saying that it’s possible to make sarcastic comments like theirs and it not be a sign of misogyny and that those comments are also made towards men featured on this site, and commenting on the double standard being applied. There is real sexism and misogyny out there and it needs to be called out, but I’m not convinced that’s what we’re seeing here.

I haven’t seen the Norton interview and it’s not available online for me to see for myself. I’m simply stating that the term “gypsy” doesn’t have the negative connotations here that it does in Europe. It sounded to me as though they didn’t realize how offensive the term is and misread Norton’s response as a joke. Fluffalo isn’t known for douchy behavior, so I was giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe once I see the Norton interview I’ll feel differently, but I’m not taking people’s impressions and making them my own. I’ll judge for myself.

I’m hoping CB will post this interview when it’s available so we can all view and discuss.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I can see the point about fandom and how it objectifies… well, everyone, let’s face it… and how it is part of the problem. But hay, I burned out on fandom a long, long time ago.

I do not however buy into the idea that the douchebros were making an ironic commentary with the purpose of calling out the fandom on its own sexism. This is getting into extreme rationalization territory imho. I think this is real sexism and misogyny that we are seeing here. No excuse for any of it, but I know some fans are going to grab whatever excuse is out there.

      • original kay says:

The parallel term for “misogyny” (hatred of women) is “misandry” (hatred of men).

        google.

      • Kara says:

there is no misandry in the world. its impossible by definition. men are the ruling class and women are the oppressed. here is a good article teaching you that even if women hated men it would be no problem: (its about feminists specifically but it applies also to this)
“Feminists don’t hate men, but it wouldn’t matter if we did”
        http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/mar/13/feminists-do-not-hate-men

there can also be no objectification of men. do you actually think an article with the headline “Actor A with a beard, would you hit it?” has anything to do with it? thats ridiculous.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Kara, awesome link which of course nails it!

      • j says:

agree on misandry kara but this “there can also be no objectification of men” isn’t true. objectification is more general than that.

anyone can be objectified. women deal with it more and at a higher level. also, objectification doesn’t have to be about attractiveness or sex or anything. it can be borne of hatred (ie the guy who wanted to kill justin bieber) or platonic adoration.

    • lucy2 says:

If they are tired of being asked about that and don’t like the way the fandom wants to pair her off with someone, that’s fair. However, this is NOT the way to respond to it. They could easily have said there’s more to the character than that. Actually I’d have loved them for that, but instead they took the worst path possible, one that only perpetuates sexism, and only adds to the acceptance of such words and behavior towards women.

Edit – Just saw that Jenny mentioned the prosthetic limb comment below.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

They are so many ways to handle this if indeed that was what they wanted to do. I don;t think it was their purpose.

    • A.Key says:

“fandom that wants to see the strong woman as someone’s girlfriend”

yeah, but that’s still not the definition of a prostitute

now if it were a fandom that wants to see the strong woman offer sex for money, we’d be getting closer to it I guess, but hey, it’s NOT

  44. Jenny says:

I’m also grossed out by how many crazy Marvel fans are defending them with the “it’s just a joke!!!” or “stop being so sensitive!!!!!!” or “they’re just humans!!!!” lines.

No, it was gross. Accept that. I’m also disappointed that most people aren’t even pointing out that they were disgustingly ableist in their comments too, making fun of the Black Widow character for being a “cripple” and having a prosthetic leg.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Fandom is part of the problem. They will rationalize anything to maintain the fantasy. Asses in seats.

Thanks for pointing out the ableism. You are right that this point is being lost.

    • Miss M says:

Thank you, Jenny. If nothing else, the most offensive comment was the one about the prosthetic leg.

    • Diana B says:

I read on the Buzzfeed comments that this was irony and that the prosthetic leg comment was being sarcastic about those rumours about Heather Mills using her prosthetic leg as a sex toy. I REALLY don’t know what to think.

  45. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Even I wouldn’t be stupid enough to say stuff like that and I’m an idiot.

  46. grabbyhands says:

I could forgive a lot of the dudebro-ness because by all other accounts he was a nice, if a bit unworldly and naive, guy that no one who worked with him ever seemed to say anything bad about. There’s not a WHOLE lot that offends me.

But this-no. Just no. It is gross and not funny. Luckily, I never got into Renner, but I would have liked to continue to think well of Evans.

it will be interesting to see how (and if) they try to spin this.

  47. Kara says:

straight white males behaving like straight white males.

    • Jenny says:

This isn’t a straight white male thing. It is a male thing in general, no matter the sexual orientation or color, many men are disgusting and see nothing wrong with casually throwing around slut and whore when they’re “joking”

    • Jay says:

LOL right, because non-white, non-straight males are SO respectful of women.

    • lucy2 says:

It’s 2 a-holes acting like a-holes. I don’t attribute it to their race or sexuality, and not ever male thinks or acts that way (thankfully).

    • Kitten says:

Not only does it have nothing to do with race or sexuality but wow, way to give them a pass on their behavior.
You could have just said “boys will be boys” and left it at that.

    • littlestar says:

Renner is gay, so not sure why either of their sexuality matters (yes, I totally believe 100% the rumours and blinds, and when that gossip blogger outted him a few years ago).

  48. Miss Jupitero says:

I am astonished that anyone can justify this puerile crap just a “joke.”

We have two man-babies here who I sincerely hope they get their wake-up call– though I am not holding my breath knowing how Hollywood can be. “Hot guys” and box office dollars are just sooooo important.

I am not surprised by Renner (I’ve always gotten a douche vibe from him) but Evans is a huge disappointment. Huge. I think he will pay for it in the long run.

  49. Rachel says:

Oh, you mean Chris “I like f*cking girls in the butt” Evans called a female character a wh*re? What a shock…

Chris needs an intervention. He’s been a total hot mess.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Exactly. This kind of crap sets us back…. oh, a couple of generations or so. Why not go whole hog and bring back the Mad Men era? Comes on guys, drunken douchbaggery used to be required!

But of course nothing is more important in Hollywood than the “hot guy” and his box office dollars. In any other industry, this would be career suicide; the fact that it isn’t in Hollywood speaks volumes.

Also, nobody should be told to shut up about everyday sexism. Just saying. Change happens from the ground up.

    • SaraB says:

With all the #BostonTea on Tumblr about Chris… I don’t think he is one to be making tasteless comments about a fictional character’s love interest(s).

    • **sighs** says:

I had to look that up.

      Ugh.

They’re all just giant doucecanoes aren’t they?

      • InvaderTak says:

Share for those of us who don’t tumblr?

      • Cancan says:

Basically, Chris has one night stands and allegedly pretended he was single (and ready to mingle, if you catch my drift) during a rough spot in his relationship with Minka Kelly. He’s a huge flirt who leaves Boston nightclubs with a new woman every time. So, uh…. yeah.

      • **sighs** says:

It’s an audio file where they’re maybe playing the game “telephone?” And he whispers to chris Hemsworth, I love f***ing girls in the butt.

He was mic’d, so even though it was whispered you can hear him.

Then there was the Salma Hayek thing. I think someone posted it here somewhere.

I’m not sure I like him so much anymore. Because if these are the things he says in public, do I want to know what he says in private?

  50. InvaderTak says:

I feel bad for Scar-Jo. And I hope someone got they got it from Marvel about this. They need to apologize. She and Renner are supposedly good friends. He spoke at her walk if fame ceremony.

    • Bobbityboo says:

She’ll probably not say a word then. Although the backlash and public outcry, of it gets big enough, might force her and the studio to (behind the scenes) make them publicly apologize.

  51. aquarius64 says:

You want gross? In the hammer lifting scene in the movie Tony Stark “jokes” about prima nocte – the king has sex with the bride on her wedding night against her will. Stark wants to begin that if he gets to rule Asgard.

  52. Dancinnancy says:

My 10 y/o daughter has worn Captain America shirts exclusively for the last 2 years. I’ve done a decent job of explaining Evans plays CA but isn’t actually CA. However, this sickens me.

  53. OSTONE says:

I tweeted Joss Whedon, Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner stating my disapproval at the gross remarks. It probably will not change anything, but I hope they feel the heat and are forced to apologize and donate $ to women’s charities etc. Very disappointed in Chris Evans, I wasn’t aware of his past remarks. I guess I have to keep remembering that he is NOT Steve Rogers.

  54. Coco says:

One thing I’ve learned is to avoid men who use those words to describe any woman. It says everything about their bad character and contempt toward women. Now we know what these two are like. Idiots.

  55. LondonGal says:

“CHICKS! BROS! BOOBS! SLUTS! BEERS! I’M DEFINITELY NOT GAY, OK?” – EXCERPT FROM JEREMY RENNER’S INNER MONOLOGUE.

  56. JSP says:

love how jeremy renner is sexist but won’t own up to the fact that he likes dick.

    • Abby_J says:

Some of the most sexist men that I have ever known have been gay men. I have my doubts that Renner is 100% gay, but even if he was, the sexist thing wouldn’t be off base from my experience.

  57. Stacy says:

So everyone wants them to apologize so they can go back to loving them and watching every Avenger movie that comes out? Smh, that is all I am reading

  58. Julie says:

I feel like Chris is highly influenced by the company he keeps. Like, he’d say sh-t and be an ass just to be part of the cool crowd or to seek praise from his buddies. In this case, Renner is a 44 year old dudebro who brings out the ass in Evans. I can never be certain if Chris is genuinely a nice guy or if his behavior on this press tour speaks volumes about who he really is.

    • Kitten says:

It’s not just Chris Evans, though. Guys tend to say stuff around other guys that they would NEVER say around women, family, etc.
I don’t know why people are pretending that doesn’t happen.

That being said, these toolsheds were mic’d and should have known better. So yeah, in this case not shaming them is condoning their behavior on some level. The only way to stop misogyny is to take a zero tolerance approach and let our voices be heard saying that this isn’t ok.

      • A.Key says:

“Guys tend to say stuff around other guys that they would NEVER say around women, family, etc.”

        Yep, this.

      • Shambles says:

@Kitten, you inspired me to let my voice be heard, so I made my feelings known on Facebook. A gentleman had the good grace to comment and say “maybe their comments were distasteful and disrespectful (MAYBE?!?), but I don’t see how this has anything to do with sexism.”
After banging my head against the wall for 45 minutes and contemplating a move to outer space, I explained that it goes back to the extremely sexist notion that a woman who has multiple romantic partners is a “whore,” while a man who has multiple partners is considered normal and even ideal. And then I told him if he truly didn’t see that this has everything to do with sexism, he would probably benefit from some research on sexism.
I’m pretty infuriated by my firsthand experience with the typical misogynistc male tactic of “lol silly girl crying sexism, this isn’t sexism, WE determine what sexism is.” But I just wanted to pop in and let you know that this kid proved your point completely.

      • Julie says:

No, I know that’s how MOST guys are. That’s how most women are, too. It’s not really a gender thing. I’m talking specifically about Chris. Like, he is probably completely different depending on whether he is in Los Angeles or Boston. I think he tries to pull off the good guy, but his words and actions speak differently.

I sorta feel like Chris is that guy who will allow his dudebro friends to say demeaning things about his girlfriend to her face and Chris would just laugh along instead of defending her, then pull the “come on, they were just joking” later on when she says it upset her.

      • lucy2 says:

“Guys tend to say stuff around other guys that they would NEVER say around women, family, etc.” Totally true. And to be fair, when I’m with a group of female friends, we probably talk differently than we might if there were guys there.

It makes it worse that this was a professional setting, discussing a character portrayed by their colleague, and representing a billion dollar franchise that markets to adults and children. Whatever their intent, it’s completely inappropriate.

      • **sighs** says:

@shambles- love contemplating a move to outer space. Thanks for making me laugh.

      • Kitten says:

That’s awesome, Shambles. I’m proud of you for being brave enough to wade knee-deep into that pile of horsesh*t.

It can feel like an exercise in futility with men like that. They just don’t get it.

@Julie-you’re absolutely right that women talk differently around each other as well. There are things I “say” in this forum about Hunnam’s Ass or Fassy that I would NEVER say in front of family, men, and especially not the boyfriend. It helps that I’m essentially “anonymous” in this forum, but it’s still a public place.
Perhaps it is a bit of a double-standard there.

  59. Josie says:

Reading comments from men on another site makes me certain that men will never stop being sexist and misogynistic and women who defend them only confirm them in their views. You can trash and abuse women verbally and physically and get away with it.
If they made racist or homphobic comments there would be a far bigger outcry but this will stay burried on some web sites.

  60. DavidBowie says:

    They’re both gross and immature.

  61. Abby_J says:

I thought their comments were strange mainly because, while I know that we like to read into stories, I never actually got the impression that Black Widow and Hawkeye were a thing in The Avengers. I mean, they were partners and obviously close, but I never got the sexy love vibe. Given what I’ve heard about AOU, I think it is a safe bet that they were NOT trying to make them a couple. Same with Winter Soldier. She kisses him to keep him from getting caught when they are on the run, but I never thought there was more to it than that. The clips I’ve seen of AOU, the relationship between Black Widow and Hulk seems totally different than the other two.

I bet they were tired of interviews and starting to get silly (and, of course, alcohol might have been involved. I’m not excusing the actions, I just think that after that many interviews with the same questions over and over, maybe the ‘real’ people start coming out. They acted like complete morons and both of them should be ashamed of themselves. Sadly, they probably aren’t. I’m sure baby Ava will be proud one day when she is looking up Dad on YouTube and sees this.

  62. Beth says:

I did a news search of Chris Evans, and this story is gaining steam. I am glad to see this is not being swept under the rug.

  63. A.Key says:

Yep, this is what the majority of men behave like when drunk/out with mates/having “fun”

ps. what’s with the “she’s got a prosthetic leg anyway” comment??? what the hell is that supposed to mean?? who cares about disabled women, wouldn’t touch them either way, or what????

    • embertine says:

I think it’s a Guardians of the Galaxy reference.

    • Izzy says:

“this is what the majority of men behave like when drunk/out with mates”

And in the real world, people who show up drunk to work tend to get fired. These two douchecanoes were on the job for the press tour. Maybe they should put down the bottle.

      • Mary says:

True. Chris shows up drunk and it’s so endearing and funny to everyone. If I showed up drunk, there would be an intervention ASAP, and I’d lose my job. The people/fans who make excuses for Chris are not doing him any favors.

      • A.Key says:

“And in the real world, people who show up drunk to work tend to get fired.”

        Absolutely, well said.

      • Esmerelda says:

Marvel should fire them. Or at least publicly distance itself from these two. Silence is support.

  64. Josefa says:

My main issue here is the fact this is Captain America and Hawkeye speaking during the promotional tour of what’s likely to become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. That’s one of the worst scenarios I can think of to display behavior like this.

  65. Jess says:

Holy fudge, what total tools. Really disappointing and certainly slows me down on my eagerness to see the Avengers.

  66. cayla says:

I think Renner really kills the whole Avengers vibe. Who hired him? Seriously… He’s such a joke.

    • Nina says:

I like to think it was more his arms that were hired.

    • Abby_J says:

Ehhh….I think he makes a GREAT Hawkeye, and Hawkeye is one of my favorite characters in the movie.

That said, my super secret crush on him is like 100% gone, beautiful arms or not.

  67. Izzy says:

And can we also say something about the interviewer here? Just because she’s female, she doesn’t get a pass. She’s the one who made the comment about Black Widow always being the sidekick, just flirting away. Way to pile on the sexism, HONEY.

    • jammypants says:

I’m really glad you pointed that out. Everyone in that interview was problematic.

    • Nina says:

I was thinking about that. I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, and hoping she was just trying to show she was “down” by sort of partaking in the banter with them. I was like, “Well, what would I say in that situation?” I myself would probably feel majorly uncomfortable, but would know better than to call out the actors I’m talking to, so I’d probably make some stupid “joke” to ease the tension.

    • Franca says:

I think she knew what she was doing, the more she partakes, the more stupid shit they say, the more press the story gets.

  68. Nina says:

I’m upset that so many people are dismissing this because Black Widow is only a fictional character. Given the number of comments this has, I’m sure it’s been stated dozens of times, already, but I’ll reiterate: even slut-shaming fictional characters isn’t okay, because it reinforces really misogynistic and limiting ideas of women and how they’re expected to behave, and teaches people that using such language is okay.

Also, Black Widow’s become one of the most high-profile female action heroes of the last decade, and isn’t as problematic as other female characters in a lot of action franchises. She’s sexy, but she’s also tough and smart, and her narratives don’t hinge on her romantic entanglements. So the fact that Evans/Renner degrade her in such a way is really uncool.

    • Shambles says:

Great comment, Nina. Upthread, I talked a little bit about the responses I got when I stated my opinion on Facebook, and I got almost the exact same response. “I think it was all in good fun because she’s a fictional character, she doesn’t really exist.” Yet another way to devalue women, and to make us feel like we’re simply whining about nothing. Very disappointing. And you’re 100% correct in that this reinforces the idea that degrading women is okay, and that is a huge problem, fictional character or not. There are children who look up to these asshats, for crying out loud.

      • Nina says:

Thanks, Shambles! Hey, at least there’s still Mark Ruffalo, about whom I’ve only heard the most wonderful things. 🙂

  69. The Original Mia says:

Disgusting comments. I hope Scarlett, their mothers, and sisters reamed them out for those comments. WTF?

  70. CidySmiley says:

What’s the most disturbing is that people defend this behavior! That is sickening. It’s only a joke if it’s funny, and no one’s laughing. These man-child, frat boy, dudebro’s are so gross. And people are making excuses! There are no excuses for this behavior. What’s more sad is both these men claim to be “mama’s boys” chris evans said his mom fought for feminism is that what she fought for? IS IT?

I’m the proud mother of two boys and I pray to God they know this isn’t okay, and that they’ll forgive me for not taking them to see the next CA movie. Too bad we already saw AOU.

By the way, being drunk or tired isn’t an excuse for this behavior. The only thing the alcohol did (and whatever else he may have been taking, anxiety meds?) Was loosen his tongue, it doesn’t make them say things they wouldn’t already be thinking.

  71. Lilacflowers says:

They have both issued statements today. One seems a bit more apologetic than the other.

    • evasmom says:

I saw that too. I couldn’t tell is Renner was being genuine or not. The way he phrased it by making sure we know the comment was made about a “fictional character.” Ugh. Too bad as i used to have a huge crush on him back in the “The It Factor” days.

      • MtnRunner says:

Yeah, Renner didn’t show as much respect for those that were offended as Evans with the way he worded his apology. Even if it was a poorly timed joke that wasn’t meant to be demeaning, Renner could have worded his statement so it didn’t sound like he was rolling his eyes at the same time.

    • Beth says:

And why am I not surprised Renner was the one to pull the “I am sorry you were offended” statement. At least Evans sounded a little more contrite.

    • CidySmiley says:

But I’m not sure if this really fixes it. I think what people assume is that when they apologize that they are truly sorry and I don’t know if that’s the case. I don’t see them doing anything about changing their behavior in the future. I don’t think them necessarily apologizing is helping at all. I can just shrug and go “okay, they’re sorry” – no.

Real action has to be done.

    • Abby_J says:

Well, since neither of them probably actually wrote their own apology, can we really say which was more sincere?

Renner’s is sort of a “sorry, not sorry” kind of thing, but I doubt that Evans is really all that sorry either.

    • Abby_J says:

      @Lilacflowers

I think I am gonna take Tommy and Johnny Lee Miller on a little trip to Disney World (oh my word, what a trip THAT would be). I think you might need some alone time with your husband to whip him back in line.

    • A.Key says:

Renner’s apology sounds sarcastic as fck, UGH.

    • Evie says:

Neither one is really sorry; both are sorry that they just got caught and called out on it.

You can bet that the order to apologize came straight from the top. And by top I mean Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, who is ultimately Whedon & Feige’s boss.

Evans was definitely more diplomatic than Renner though. I can’t believe that with the millions Marvel is paying him, Renner has the nerve to complain about a “tedious press tour.” Typically, actors get paid extra for doing these tours and give the budget for AOU; it’s a first class ride all the way!

  72. 14times says:

Adding to the chorus of people who find their comments disgusting and very disappointing. Had a positive view of Evans before this, and a neutral one of Renner, since I don’t really keep up with gossip, but now they’re both in the doghouse as far as I’m concerned. And really, the people saying this is no big deal: comments like these are the manifestation of misogynistic/patriarchal view of women being somehow inferior, which is a big deal.

    Also, WTH Mark Ruffalo?

    • MaiGirl says:

Don’t read the comments on any other sites. It has literally ruined the last hour of my life! So many men and women excusing all this as a joke that shouldn’t be apologized for. People suck.

  73. CidySmiley says:

I really used to feel like maybe Renner was going through a post-divorce “I hate women” Faze but looking back he’s always been like this.

Sadly the thing about Chris Evans doesn’t really surprise me. He always seems like two different people. I hope he gets himself figured out. He even physically looks worse for wear, his eyes have huge bags, his face is kind of bloated. I hope he gets it figured out.

  74. Annie says:

Ah, Renner… the classic non-apology apology… Making it our problem, not his. Oh well. He tried. Let’s move on…

  75. Ferdinand says:

OMG? People got ofended by Evan’s comments? Sexist jokes?
And yet, Women lure at pictures of him in his Capt America suit and objectify him calling him names like CaptAss and such. #DoubleStandards, get a grip, people!

    • A.Key says:

Dude, he called her a whore. Literally. Don’t sugarcoat it. Saying someone looks hot on a poster and calling them a whore are two very different things, and the fact you equate them proves degrading people is basically one big joke to you.

  76. Jonathan says:

No free pass for Evans and Renner. It’s not “boys will be boys” at all. I just won’t tolerate those words being used about women, from anybody, “jokes” or not. It’s not funny or excusable or light hearted. It’s sexist abuse. Straight men do not use these terms about other men or think about other men in this way, it’s high fives all around for getting more (insert derogatory term about vaginas here).

Maybe it’s because I live in the big city but the men I know- gay & straight- generally do not use terms like “slut” or “whore”. I don’t know, maybe it’s because the men I circulate with would have been…politely corrected if they’d ever used those terms around me.

And here I get on my gay horse again-

MOST gay men I’ve known would definitely use terms like “slut” or “whore” about other gay men, or straight guys. But not about women. To a lot of gay men, women are divas (in the positive sense of the word) or goddesses.

Most gay men I know are enthusiastic cheerleaders for heterosexual women having MORE sex and owning their own sexual enjoyment. I can’t tell you about the number of female friends I’ve had to educate about the Busse (look it up) or vaginal anatomy in general, or explain about clitoral orgasms as opposed to vaginal penetrative orgasms or about masturbation or encourage them to use a hand mirror to check out their anatomy for the first time or go shopping for their first vibrator together.

Gay men understand what it’s like to be told your sexuality is wrong when straight guys are expected to be prolifically promiscuous

In my experience its been women who use terms like “slut” or “whore” freely about other women. I’ve heard it used about Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton or Angelina Jolie (during the whole Team Aniston/Team Jolie” thing) countless times. I’ve had to call out my Dad’s current wife for using these terms about her own daughter before, my Dad, brothers & I would never, ever think of calling my sister- or any woman- these terms. Even when my physically abusive, alcoholic father was at his very worst I don’t think he ever called my Mum that kind of thing.

It’d be nice if some people on this thread, won’t name names because its not polite to single anyone out- could stop treating men like a homogenous lump and maybe start looking at men like individuals, capable of a wide range of feelings, motivations and responses. Just in the way not all women are the same, all men certainly are not either. Yes, I’m using the “not all men” thing but there’s really no reason to treat us all like abusive, privileged, sexist, stupid sacks of turds. Men’s bodies certainly are commodified and can be objectified by women. Men certainly can be discriminated against by women. I am not patriarchy. I’m a person just like you, I just have an external vagina and ovaries.

    • Dan says:

I’m all for not generalizing. All generalizations are false. (Except that one.)

    • Nina says:

Yes. I think I’ve heard other women use the term slut or whore against other women. Although I see why the term is problematic, I have to say, I wasn’t as offended as everyone here was. I guess, I thought he was saying it mockingly as the kind of thing a spurned guy might say about a woman who goes on to another guy. Maybe that in itself is objectifying, but Ive also heard either term used by women here about men too.

  77. Jonathan says:

(See, now why can’t I find any hits in google for “busse”? It’s a term for (maybe archaic, no longer used) the clitoral hood).

  78. Dan says:

Obviously Renner was mocking the journalist’s question, the notion that he (the real life human being, the actor Jeremy Renner) might be jealous of a fictional character (Hulk) being with the fictional character (Black Widow) that the journalist thinks could have easily hooked up with the fictional character that Renner portrayed (Hawkeye). Can anyone see how stupid the question is? Can anyone see that is why Renner facetiously mocked the journalist by playing along and “acting” as if he was a jealous lover? The key word being “acting.” It’s not how Renner truly feels. Do you people even understand that? My God, the backlash over this is hilarious and indicative of our “outrage” culture. Everyone is outraged by everything. Everyone is offended. No one can make a joke anymore because people are too stupid to get it.

  79. Isa says:

I don’t have time to read all the comments so forgive me if this has been said but…

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been called a slut or a whore for not being interested in a male. 🙋

This really irritates me. This attitude has gotten so bad that it’s leaking onto make believe characters. This is why it’s so incredibly important to me to raise my kids as feminists. I especially hope that I raise my son to know better than this.

  80. Shay15 says:

I don’t even follow Evan’s news at all but this was so disappointing…I always thought he had anxiety and thus sometimes says dubious things but this?? Whether he was drunk or not, it cannot be excused. So disappointing.

  81. Jonathan says:

What’s good is that this went global, it’s in the news papers in Australia today.

    “Avengers Shamed Into Joke Apology”.
