Ian Somerhalder apologizes (sort of) for lecturing his superfans in Paris

Ian Somerhalder

Late last week, Ian Somerhalder got into trouble with his fans. He and Nikki Reed were continuing their steamy” honeymoon in Paris. Some fans gathered outside the hotel, and Ian decided he wouldn’t pose with them. Understandable. What’s funny is that Ian didn’t simply walk past the group. He stopped to lecture them, which took longer than if he simply posed for a few joint selfies. Ian said, “Hey guys, listen. Everybody stop. No no, listen. I love you guys, I’m not taking a single photo today. It’s MY day. Don’t follow us, please. I love you guys. You’re so good to us … Don’t follow us. It’s too much.” Then one of the fans started crying, perhaps because Ian’s awesomeness (or pretentiousness) affected her so much. Here’s the video from a Twitterer who labelled Ian as “Zac Efron” for some reason.

Michael K. at DListed has offically declared May 28th to be International Ian Somerhalder Day. That’s amazing. I do see where Ian’s coming from. He simply wanted to be left alone, and no fan has a right to demand anything from a celebrity. The lecture did go overboard, especially since Ian and Nikki have both acted so thirsty since they got together. They publish romantic “human” wedding videos and share private moments on social media all the time. Now Ian’s behaving like he and Nikki must be the second coming of Brangelina, and their dual fame is so crippling.

Ian got the point and posted an apology to Instagram:

Looking at the world through my eyes and always trying to see it through yours. I see you. I see all of you and find great beauty in each set of eyes. Anyone who knows me understands that I spend a great deal of my life with our fans. Our audience. The people that make this show and ISF happen- all with hearts, minds bodies and souls. It blows my mind that a man who tried to love so much, a man asking for one day, just one day to have a quiet walk down the street is so upsetting to people. So much love to you all … Goodnight and thank you.

[From Ian Somerhalder on Instagram]

Well he tried to apologize and sounds sincere enough. The whole situation is still amusing. Ian still seems to believe he and Nikki are a power couple. The lecture was rude, but maybe next time Ian will leave out a back door if he truly craves privacy.

Am I reading it wrong, or is he not apologizing at all, but complaining that people complained?
I have no problem with him declining to pose for photos, but couldn’t he just say “sorry, not today” and keep moving?

    • QQ says:

      No, you read that correctly!!

this dude looks Like a Toolbag Ken Doll from tje clothes Down to the fake hair

      • belle de jour says:

What an excellent Celebitchy/DListed crossover holiday gift: Toolbag Ken 2015. He’s a b-to-d-list wannabe celeb, and he’s dressed in a variety of wardrobes with our favorite affected accessories. When you pull the string in his back, he comes out with some of the best comments & quotes of the past year.

Delusional universe in which every day is HISDAY on the calendar sold separately.

      • QQ says:

        ROTFLMMFAO ETERNALLY !!

    • susiecue says:

He definitely isn’t apologizing. He’s whining that everyone is calling him out on his hilariously vainglorious speech. He doesn’t have to apologize for it, but he should at least be able to understand why everyone thought it was so cringe and LOL-worthy.

      • belle de jour says:

        +10000.

Also, he has begun to refer to himself in the third person. Always such a good sign.

(Confession: watching that clip was like watching ego porn being filmed live – a delicious cringe, plus the promise of even worse to come in the future… only to have his follow-up comment deliver. Big time. I feel dirty in the afterglow.)

      • qwerty says:

Obviously he doesn’t understand how people can be co cruel. He’s just a man who tried to love so much lmao

    • PhenomenalWoman says:

I’m still laughing at his pompous “it’s MY day, peasants!” Oh. My. God. These people really do believe their own hype. Last year, my step-daughter and I were at Great Adventure and ran into Terrence J (“Think like a man”) and we asked him for a picture. He gave us a similar speech, but then “relented” and let us mere mortals take a picture with him. It left such a bad taste in our mouths. I don’t care how popular you are at the moment; it would have taken no time at all to pose for a few pictures.

      • Liv says:

What a douche!! I always liked him but this is ridiculous. Maybe they should stop posting pictures of them on Instagram so that people don’t know they are there. It’s so ridiculous. He’s on the brink of getting his show canceled (I doubt they have much success without the main figure after Dobrev dropped out), he should be thankful that there are still fans around. Might not last much longer.

    • BangersandMash says:

You read it like I read it… And it was my first genuine laugh of the day….
Basically he’s like…. “I see you, I love who you are, all of you. I give so much of my body/soul/mind too you, how could you turn around and be offended ’cause I want one day to walk down the street? How could you be… How could you be so needy? To someone who sees and loves your eyes, and sees you mind body and soul? Aaaagh, goodnight!!”

      This is SPECTACULAR!!!!

How could you not love/enjoy/be entertained by this ‘apology’? it’s GOLD!!!

      • I Choose Me says:

It is. I hope Celebitchy keeps posting about Ian and Nikki and their epic love. It’s soooo entertaining.

      • Liv says:

It’s kind of entertaining, but at the same time it’s just embarrassing. How can you be so full of yourself…

Lainey just posted something about Martin and Lawrence, who played the old game of hide and seek in front of paps. I do get that you want privacy, but I so agree with her, that they take all the good that comes with being a celebrity and refuse to take the bad. When will they grow up!

    • kennedy says:

This dude is a joke. I am more embarrassed for the folks who are almost crying in the video – like who is this dude and who cares about him? And he should be grateful that he has a fan club for his second fiddle role on a CW show.

  2. Linn says:

I don’t think he had anything to apologize about. It’s not like he yelled “F*ck off you A*holes.

    • mom2two says:

Agreed. I think he was polite, maybe a bit pretentious, but polite. I do think he does appreciate his fans and probably does need to come up with alternate strategies if he wants privacy while on vacation.

    • Samtha says:

Agreed, and the fact is–he DOES typically spend a lot of time with fans. If he’d just walked by, chances are, they would have followed him.

I didn’t see anything rude in what he said. The entitlement of fans, however…that’s pretty rude.

      • Greyson says:

        I agree!

He just didn’t want to be followed for one day with his wife. Next time, he should try the back exit,

      • Liv says:

Tell that the fans who see them once in their lifetime. Classy.

      • Leigh says:

^^ But this kind of things happens to him (and other celebs) frequently. So whenever there are fans around, he should be obligated to take time out of his day to take photos with them for as long as they’re around? And what if the crowd started to grow – he should stay until every last person has a photo, so as not to leave anyone out?

He goes to MANY fan conventions all over the globe and already sets aside tons of time for this kind of thing.

    • Kristen says:

+1. He didn’t seem rude at all, and we also have no idea how long these people had been there, or if they’d been following him around prior to this.

    • InsertNameHere says:

Just throwing this out there – how would you feel if you were one of the teenagers/fans who was out there to take a picture with him? They probably felt like it was the best day EVER, getting to meet this guy. Then he comes out and lectures about it being “his day”. Well sure, as adults we can see that people need their space – but would your 14 year old self have felt the same way, or would you have been crushed? They really should’ve just gone out a more discreet exit.

      • Kristen says:

Yeah, but did you watch the video? He just says that he won’t take photos and asks them please not to follow him. He points out specifically that he’s in person right in front them and he is meeting them.

      • Linn says:

14 year old me would have understood that somebody might not want to be bothered outside of work, especially not during his/her honeymoon.

He’s there, he’s saying hi, he’s shaking hands, he’s talking to them. So what if he doesn’t want to take a selfie? Is it still about the experience of meeting Ian or is it just about bragging on Instagram?

Sure, they could have gone out a more discreet exit, but then the fans wouldn’t have gotten to see him at all.
Do you think finding out Ian was in their city and they didn’t meet him would have made the fans happier than the brief but over all friendly interaction in the video?

The girl goes on and on about “Just one picture” etc. but if he does one with her and nobody else people will still call him arrogant.

      • InsertNameHere says:

I did watch the video, and I still think they could’ve used a different exit. A 14-year old who is all squeeee over the TVD guy is likely not going to understand anything other than their dream of a picture with him is squashed. And of COURSE it’s about putting it on Instagram for these kids. That’s how they are socialized – pictures or it didn’t happen.

      • Tiffany :) says:

The one girl that started crying…he was like “I’m here!” aka, don’t take a picture, isn’t having an authentic moment in reality better than the faux intimacy of a quick photo. I think he was trying to make a point that was lost on this group.

14 years old or not, people just have no entitlement or claim on other people’s time (or bodies). If the kids weren’t taught that by their parents, it isn’t Ian’s fault.

      • Josa says:

The 14 years olds may get real upset and don’t understand why they spent whole day standing outside waiting for him and he doesn’t return their loves. But maybe they will also start learning standing outside waiting all day for a celebrity and then follow him around town isn’t something that will endear them to anyone, celebrity or otherwise. And they will start learning the meaning of entitlement.

    • PrincessMe says:

I agree, there’s nothing to apologize about. I think he was trying to be respectful by asking them to not follow him. I would hate to go on vacation and have to sneak around – how is that enjoyable.
The fact that he shares on social media doesn’t mean the fans are now entitled to whatever they want. Angelina shares details about her family in magazines, but that doesn’t mean the fans should now be able to waltz into her home to see those moments first hand. I will never understand that type of entitlement. I enjoy certain celebs, but I would never walk up to them when they’re out in public and bother them – must be annoying and exhausting.
Sure it’s nice when they’re willing to take a pic with a fan, but when they say “not today”, just move on. You’re not entitled to anyone else’s time.

    • Lucinda says:

Exactly. I’m completely puzzled why anyone would think he needed to apologize.

  3. GlimmerBunny says:

I don’t normally find him that hot (Stefan all the way on TVD, not to mention Klaus, Elijah and Marcel of “The Originals”) but the pics in the tux are doing it for me. Maybe it’s the stubble but I’m getting flashbacks to being 14 and in love with him on “Lost”.

  4. AJ says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the apology. He seems to be defending his actions, not apologizing. Unless I have bad reading comprehension or missed something? Either way he seems pretty far up his own ass.

    • Insomniac says:

That’s how I read it too. “Gosh, one day of privacy is just too much to ask? Le sigh.”

    • TorontoE says:

I agree. Where is the apology? It’s just defending himself and expressing outrage at the outrage of others. That being said, waiting outside a celebrity’s hotel or following him around is pretty …intense.

  5. Ellie says:

That does not read to an apology to me. It reads as him fawning over himself. Sit down Ian.

    • Jen says:

Exactly-you’re not exactly Brad and Angelina, please stop pretending you’re constantly hounded by the paparazzi and fans. From what I understand, that vampire show he’s on or was on has a small but devoted following and he and his wife court attention from the paparazzi like the typical C-listers they are. Get over yourself-I would completely understand him simply nicely asking people to give them their space for the day but this statement is just one huge eye roll.

    • Jen says:

Exactly-you’re not exactly Brad and Angelina, please stop pretending you’re constantly hounded by the paparazzi and fans. From what I can see, they court attention from the paparazzi like the typical C-listers they are. Get over yourself-I would completely understand him simply nicely asking people to give them their space for the day but this statement is just one huge eye roll.

    • Greyson says:

He’s not Brad or Angelina, but he’s still being followed by fans. L

Come on, he was talking directly to THEM, not the Internet, when he asked them not to follow or take pictures.

      • Liv says:

Come on, they posted their location on Instagram. You either want privacy and shut up about your location or you have to be friendly to your fans, who support you and spend their money on things you promote. Which makes you able to fly to Paris with your wife and stay in fancy hotels.

  6. mollie says:

I just can’t take Rob-Lowe-Lite seriously. I go directly to the original. Old school.

    • Rhiley says:

Yep. Plus, Rob Lowe is funny, can laugh at himself, and doesn’t spout a bunch of New Age garbage at fans who just want a picture.

  7. Kath says:

    What a wanker.

Could that speech (or ‘apology’) have been more pompous? Dude, you have like 7 fans.

…not to mention the fact that he has been desperate for attention by documenting his every bowel movement via social media.

  8. Annie says:

You know, he’s pushing 40. Without his hats you can see his real age, the hair loss. It won’t be long before he’s completely irrelevant. These kids have no idea how old he really is. His target audience are young kids, that’s almost over for him. Since he loves attention so much, he needs to be a bit more graceful about things. You create the curiosity, don’t act precious now. These kids are what keeps you working. That’s almost over!

  9. Kaylah says:

I’m crying. He’s so damn dramatic, “It’s MY day”. Even the instagram post is SO extra. Clutching his chest and what not, acting like he’s in a local theatre production.

I have no problem with him saying no, he’s human he’s allowed but that speech. Jesus.

  10. Tifygodess24 says:

I completely understand wanting to have a day of peace and quiet, I get it BUT without those fans he’s also sh*t out of luck. So he might want to watch what he wishes for. He’s not exactly a A list celebrity.
On a side note I really wish people would stop falling all over celebrities like they are the second coming or something. I mean hanging outside of a hotel or whenever ? I just don’t know. I mean they are just people who get paid a ridiculous amount of money to do a job and are already celebrated more than they should be. do we really need to inflate their egos anymore?

    • Kitten says:

“On a side note I really wish people would stop falling all over celebrities like they are the second coming or something”

Totally. I have ZERO in common with people who do stuff like that. I would never, ever ask a celebrity for a photo or an autograph. They’re just people, yo.

      • Mel M says:

I’m with you Kitten. I can’t understand crying over a celebrity even when I was a teenager. If you have that much invested into someone you have never met and know only through a character they play on tv then you have issues. It’s not like the guy is notorious for being rude to fans. Who knows, he could’ve just reached a point where he was tired, didn’t feel well and fed up and let down his guard for a minute. NBD in my opinion.

      • Tifygodess24 says:

High five for Kitten ! 😸

    • I Choose Me says:

My thoughts as well. I won’t pretend I wouldn’t be inwardly stoked to meet say Angelina or Tom Hiddleston or Prince but I won’t ask for a photo (esp cause I hate being photographed myself) or an autograph and I ain’t waiting hours no where for no one ever. I don’t have the time or the patience.

      • Mel M says:

@I choose me – Totally, not wasting my day waiting to catch a glimpse of someone. I will live my life which is sitting in the waiting room at the doctors office and reading celebitchy since I have no kids around. I agree with the commenter above how a lot of this is about these people wanting to document that they met someone on social media and that’s why getting a picture is really the only thing they want.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Me too! I never got why you’d want an autograph or a picture with a celebrity. I’d be too embarrassed to ask….in that regard, I feel bad for celebrities that they can’t really interact with normal people in a normal way. I would be so weirded out if every time I went somewhere, people were fawning over me.

  11. Kdlaf says:

The thirst is strong with the couple – that video was actually hilarious – so extra its ridiculous

  12. snowflake says:

I can’t believe that one girl was crying because she couldn’t get a selfie. I could not deal with no privacy, I understand where he’s coming from, but yes, he is going to piss off his fans though

  13. Talie says:

I get it, but I mean, Ian you’re of a certain age (trying to play younger) on a past-its-prime TV show on a little network — just be grateful people give a damn.

  14. Shay DeShade says:

He owes nobody an apology. And stans are sick people, sorry. They are not even remotely rooted in reality.

  15. Rhiley says:

I could watch that video over and over and over. It is pretty dang funny. This dude takes himself very seriously. Kellan Lutz would have a lot to say about this if Kellan Lutz were asked to give his opinion. Kellan Lutz loves Nikki and Ian, but thinks they should just chill and snap a few photos. That is how you tame the tiger, man.

  16. poop says:

what world do we live in when superfans waiting outside the hotel for hours are more entitled than this mans privacy? he wasn’t even rude about it. it’s absolutely creep to wait hours upon hours for this stranger to come out of his hotel and APPARENTLY he MUST take pictures with them. in his eyes, instead of ignoring them completely, he believes the fans deserve a least a respectful plea to have his own day. I don’t even know who he is but I will defend his decision to have a day off!!!

  17. Jess says:

That video makes me cringe, for him because he’s acting like a total douche, and for those fans who think it’s ok to wait outside a hotel room or follow someone around! What a strange thing to do, but he should’ve hired a security guard to do the talking, it makes him look ungrateful and mean, can’t do that in his business.

I don’t understand that level of obsession with celebrities. I enjoy reading about them but I would never in million years stop one and ask for an autograph or picture, I would feel like such a creeper.

Also, I love Michael K, that’s so fkng funny!

  18. InvaderTak says:

*Jimmy Carr laugh* I can’t handle it! It’s so ….so douchey and full of it and dumb… Is there a word for this? Ha ha ha

  19. Stacie says:

I understand where he’s coming from, but I think his execution was a bit over the top. That said, Ian is such an incredibly nice guy and is probably the most giving and personable out of The Vampire Diaries cast to his fans.

  20. Mia4S says:

That girl who cried! I don’t want to laugh in case she has some mental or emotional issues….let’s face it she probably doesn’t. The CW fan base seems to be….interesting…shall we say. What they lack in size….oh I’ll stop, they’re harmless. 😉

This guy is never going to get to the level he obviously thinks he should be at. Save and invest my dear fellow!

    • Tough Cookie says:

I so wanted the crying girl to say “I’ve been waiting here all this time for YOU? I don’t even know who you are!!! They told me Zayn Malik was staying here!!”

  21. EmmyGrant says:

That was so douchetastic of him. It’s not like these particular fans were going to easily have another opportunity to meet up with him. This was likely a once-in-a-lifetime chance for most of them. It’s not like it’s the same posse of fans every day and therefore it makes no sense to ask them to give him this “one day” of freedom. What a jerk. I actually felt so bad for the fans. I could even identify with crying girl–it could’ve been something she had been anticipating for a long time. If he wanted to avoid them he could’ve found a way to sneak out.

  22. Luca76 says:

He was in the right but he handled it in a douchey way.

  23. LuluPolly says:

    Who is this now?

  24. ed says:

    WHO?

  25. lola says:

I get wanting a fan free day but he needs to realize he’s the one who blurred the lines,by oversharing with fans constantly on social media. It’s out of control the way him and Nikkei beg for attention so of course his fans are going to have horrible boundaries in kind.

    • meme says:

^THIS. This two overshare ad nauseum and then complain because fans want pics and autographs? Neither of their careers are going to be very long lasting so they should be grateful anyone even cares.

      • mary simon says:

Her career is over and his is ending. They can’t afford any more whiny ‘not today’ episodes.

  26. Rachel says:

Everyone needs to stop acting like they’re doing celebrities a favor by watching their movies and listening to their music. Celebrities aren’t indebted to you. They owe you nothing. End of story.

    • Jess says:

Eh, on one hand I get your point but on the other you can’t be rich and famous unless you have fans who spend their time and money on watching your movies or listening to your music, so it does get a little sticky.

  27. FWIW says:

I haven’t seen this guy in anything (never had an interest in his vampire show) but could not miss his PR photo ups with his current wife. They crave and seek attention and then do this to his fans. If Brad and Angie can take care of this with class then Ian and Nikki don’t have an excuse. The more he talks the more he sounds so full of himself. Like many have said, he could have taken the back exit but then he wouldn’t have had a chance to give his lecture, which is what he lives for. Drama queen.

  28. Delta Juliet says:

I kind of get what he’s saying but I also see if from the eyes of the fan who was SO excited to finally be meeting someone they admire.

When I was in college I ran into a very famous writer from my home state, in Amato’s. This was before smartphones so I couldn’t take a picture but I very nervously walked up to him, told him what a big fan I was, and asked for his autograph. There was no one else around except the employees and my boyfriend. He very rudely dismissed me and ended with “Maybe next time”. Yeah, because I’ll surely run into him again right?

So, like I said, I get it, but it still sucks as a fan.

  29. Corrie says:

I have to say that was an all time moment and i absolutely laughed my ass off. I think he’s every right no matter how much a slut puppy he is to the press or fans, deserves a no pic day but his speech was legendary. Because he saw those tears before they were rolling and decided OH NO, Its my day!!!! Lol Dramatic yes, necessary yes. Apology is more or less asking for all the FU’s Ian to stop and let’s sing kumbaya now. lol I will say, Ian is a nice go caught in a “NOT TODAY” moment.

  30. Indira says:

I’ve cooled on him a little lately, since I discovered a show which much better female representation, but he’s always, always been super nice to his fans. He does a ton of appearances and was always very sweet about helping Nina (when it was overwhelming for her in the early years) in dealing with the attention. There actually is a lot of attention. Yeah, he is very talky, but that’s just who he is. He’s actually one of the nicest celebs out there (even though you probably think he’s very low down on the list). And what he said was completely reasonable. So much blowing out of proportion.

  31. veronica says:

I get where he’s coming from, it must be exhausting to deal with this everyday, but you know what you signed up for. I have very little sympathy because he could have walked out a back door when he saw the throngs of people. He could have asked the hotel if there was another entrance (there is ALWAYS another entrance). You can’t have it both ways.

    • EN says:

Where did he sign up for this? Nobody signed on for this. Normal people can’t handle living in a fish bowl, it does things to you,
It only gotten that bad last 10-15 years with the rise of social media, many celebrities commented on that.
I wish there was a way for people to experience just for one day what it means to be observed at every second you are out of privacy of your home. I know I’d get paranoid.
It is first world problems and all, but I understand where he is coming from.

      • CL says:

En is absolutely right. I don’t think anyone goes for a career in the entertainment world so that they can be stalked and followed by misguided people who think they are owed something.

The fans aren’t “owed” anything, ever. Someone is a fan because they choose to be. The fan enjoys someone’s work. That should be the extent of their expectations.

      • veronica says:

I meant that by being a public figure and who openly shares just about everything in his life with his fans in social media, you can’t exactly be shocked that there are people clamouring all over you. He shares so much of his life on Instagram and Twitter so it’s really understandable why people would think that they know him or that they are entitled to his life. I don’t think it’s right but people are crazy. He wants boundaries, between public and private? Stop putting your life out there for consumption and people will back off.

  32. Cali says:

I think he was trying to over-explain in both instances. He really does give a ton of time to everyone else but definitely should’ve tried to sneak out a diff way or something… I still love him and all he tries to do to make the world a better place, though. 😉

  33. EN says:

What I don’t get is so-called “fans” sense of entitlement, thinking they have a right to be a part of celebrities lives and have access to private information. So many people have no sense of boundaries.
I am seeing it over and over and over. I am on Ian’s side here.

  34. JH says:

    Power couple. I die.

  35. Kate says:

I thought he dealt with those fans pretty perfectly. He was kind and polite even when one of them was pushing up against him to take a picture after he just asked them not to. They still got to meet him and it actually seemed like he would have been happy to talk to them if they had of responded halfway normally. He just didn’t want to take pictures and didn’t want to be stalked all day.

For people saying they’re not Brad and Angelina, well that can make it worse. Most people waiting outside a hotel for B&A just want to see two really famous people, whereas people waiting outside a hotel for these two are likely to all be slightly crazed obsessive fans. They’re more likely to think there’s a real connection there, and to feel they’re owed a certain level of interaction. Unlike B&A these two don’t have the means to hire proper security 24/7, or to pull off bait and switches with multiple cars and drivers. So they actually have to deal with their more unhinged fans face to face and plead with them not to be crazy stalkers for one day. B&A on the other hand can just know their security is on it and not have to give it a second thought.

  36. misery chick says:

OK…I get that he wants privacy for “his” day, BUT if he really wanted privacy, he would have gone out a more discreet way, if that wasn’t available he could have figured something out.

Can you imagine a REAL star, such as Hugh Jackman, treating his fans that way?!?! And TC, who used to be a star (now certifiably insane ignorant nut case), always signed autographs, posed for pictures, chatted up fans, etc. No, I imagine sometimes it’s a big fat PITA ‘servicing’ fans, but they really are the entertainer’s bread & butter.

‘Too cool for school’ IS should have kept his mouth shut and remembered the old saying by Benjamin Franklin (I apologize if I’m wrong) “It’s better to keep your mouth shut & thought a fool you then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
