I love Maya. A co-worker of mine was surprised to find out that she is Black. I told her remember the singer Minnie Riperton who had that big hit “Loving You is Easy cause you’re beautiful. That was her mother.
Minnie Riperton is AWESOME. I was watching her on YouTube a few weeks ago. I was so sad when she died. She was so young and gifted. I listen to Minnie and think Mariah you need to sit down and listen.

I don’t see “the funny” here. What Rachel did was a serious crime and she was known for treating black women like crap all the while pretending to be them and take resources and benefits that were meant for them.
Imagine if it had been a white man pretending to be a black man, or a white male/female of anglo sax descent pretending to be jewish and stealing resources from jewish organisations. She would also be charged for ‘hate crime’.
This is racism + sexism intertwined and it’s sickening that we treat it as a joke.
Maya is definitely one of my favorites. I wish she were in more stuff, I’ve liked her in everything she’s done.
So sad about James Horner. He was a true legend, and one of the most talented film composers ever. It’s a major loss.
I know. I read his resume and am in awe. He and John Williams were always the two I know about when it comes to scores for films.
I have several of his scores/soundtracks among my favorites. This is sad news. RIP Horner.

I hope this does great things for her career, but I’m so sick of Marvel.
Go Ava! A great opportunity for a very talented woman. She is so beautiful it’s hard not to stare. Ava, Kathryn Bigelow and Angelina Jolie to me prove you can’t dismiss someone as not serious or talented just because they were gifted with beauty. Also disproves all the whiney “hot girls” who claim they can’t get serious acting roles because of their looks. Be a baller and you will be taken seriously.

I happen to agree, with exception, “hot girls” who are clingy to male superstars for desperate fame and fortune.
For some reasons this makes me feel the same way I feel whenever someone who is not white and male wins an Oscar for best movie or best director. They put every egg they have in one basket so that they are done with pleasing “minorities” for at least a decade. A movie with a black lead actor directed by a black woman. Had the black lead actor been gay, they would’ ve covered all bases!
Anyway, I hope they both do great! As bitter as I can be, I hope they get something awesome from this movie, even though Marvel’ s moment is starting to fade!

I don’t watch TV channels targeted towards blacks because I can’t relate at all. Everyone there is black, and the way they interact , talk and behave is different . I don’t know if it is a true reflection of what actually happens in black communities, but it is an equivalent for me of watching let’s say a Bollywood movie. I don’t relate, so I don’t watch them.
I am rumbling, but my point is , if they make Black Panther about minorities, it will flop. And that won’t be good for anyone.. Marvel then will say – see we made a movie with minorities in them and it failed.
Can you then put yourself in the place of a black person who has to watch all these white shows? You can’t get out of your comfort zone because you don’t have to, but we have our children brain washed from childhood because their tv and film consumption is from white point of view, standard of beauty is from white point of view and they grow up thinking that is what beauty should be.

My point was that when I heard the news I thought that Marvel producers gave her this job so that they didn’ t have to consider giving another job, maybe even more prestigious, to another black person/woman or non-heterosexual person. Exactly like Oscar voters give me the vibes that they give awards to black people and women not because they deserve it (even if they do), but because doing so will shut minorities up for a while from complaining about being under-represented.
If they give a directing award to a black guy one year, then they please the ones who are not part of their club and can avoid this “equality nonsense” for a while while showing that they’ re not racist/sexist/homophobic.
Her being chosen makes me think that Marvel producers give for granted that “Black Panther” will be a flop, so that they put all the risky people they are pushed to hire to please the ones who complain about the lack of diversity in one place.
As for @Marianne, what does it have to do if people who are tired of super-hero movies are their targets or not? I am not their target and I enjoy lots of those movies.
I’ m just stating that while I am very well aware that they are going to make movies/tv shows for a very long time, it’ s just a matter of fact that all the talking about the new DC movies are more because of their controversial casting and directing that about the genuine excitement of watching Batman kicking the Joker like when The Dark Knight came out. Or that the hype surrounding the first Avengers movie was way bigger then the one surrounding Age Of Ultron. Not only because AOU was a significantly lesser movie, but simply because it was not a novelty anymore, and because there are so many movies of that kind produced or in production that lots of people (maybe not 12 years boys, the intended target, but lots of other people) are getting tired of them.

I know, and of course I can because I’ve had had this same experience with a number of foreign films. Some I can relate to and some I can’t. And I am not saying it is right. I am just saying I hope they realize the pitfalls.
@jhq, I write a couple of comments below about my feelings on the kind of “tokenism” you described. I do agree with you, and there is a risk that Marvel in this case will consider themselves progressive enough for hiring Ava D to direct Black Panther, and won’t look you hire any more PoC directors, or behind the scenes crew, because they ticked that box.
Personally, I think with Chadwick Boseman and Ava Duvernay, Black Panther is looking so promising, and when it comes out I plan on seeing it A LOT in the cinemas. Then, nobody in Hollywood can fall back on their prejudices anymore. If a movie with a black main character, with black writers and black director about black issues actually manages to break a billion at the box office (long shot I know, but just imagine!) – well people will have to take notice. Studios couldn’t get away with their old excuses.
This is also broadly true for Captain Mavel also.
I know a lot of people here are tired of Marvel, but were you ever really its Target Market anyway?
Trust me, Marvel isnt going anywhere soon and LOTS of people are still going to go out to those movies in droves.
I am a huge fan of Marvel and I am not tired of comic book movies. It’s the kid in me that grew up reading the comics and watching the cartoons. Some people may only really know of these characters by what they have seen on screen.
But it’s ok to be tired of Marvel and comic book movies just like it’s ok to be tired of movies about family dramas, romance, biographies based on someone’s life, horror movies and action films.
Oh I know, but some people are acting like its a downard spiral and that its “fading”. Like, maybe for you it is, but lots of people are still really into them.
+ a million! Loads of people talk about comic book movies and superhero fatigue, but not every massive blockbuster is based on a comic book. Imo, people are sick of crap movies, and Marvels movies are, I think, quality.
True, they could have been more diverse in the past, but they are trying to make up for it now. I know many people feel that having a black director direct their black superhero film, or females write and direct their female superhero film is tokenism, but…so what, kind of? I mean, both Black Panther and Captain Marvel are going to be massive, proper, Marvel Movie Events. They’re not being given smaller budgets and released in the off season, in between films with buff men called Chris, you know? Okay, maybe it is a bit tokenistic, but you can go from one end of the year to another without seeing a female or PoC made film of any kind, let alone a movie that could be the biggest of the year. Basically, I was the Marvel fan girl begging for years to see some decent diversity on and off screen, so now I’m getting it, I’m delighted, and I’ll be watching the sh!t out of Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

Congrats to Ava BUT! are the directors that important in Marvel movies? Marvel dictates what the movie will be before they’ve even hired a director (why Edgar Wright had to leave), so I worry that her being hired isn’t all what it’s cracked up to be…

Well of course Marvel has a certain vision for their movies. Afterall, it has to fit in with the rest of their universe. But it doesn’t mean they won’t let their directors give it a certain flair. I mean Cap 2 was kind of like a spy thriller.
As to whether directors are important to Marvel movies, I think Kenneth Branagh is proof that they are. He was one of the chief reasons we got Hemsworth and Hiddleston on board Marvel. So… yay.
James Gunn found a way to make Guardians of the Galaxy in a way that kept both the Marvel and James Gunn brand/ style. The Russo brothers made Winter Soldier stand out because of their individual style and take on Captain America. The director matters. The weaker Marvel films prove that.
