Jon Stewart says goodbye to ‘The Daily Show’ with a tearful, hilarious sendoff

wenn21922201

Last night, Jon Stewart signed off on his last episode of The Daily Show. As I said yesterday, he’s been over it for a few years and it’s probably a good thing that he’s leaving at the point in his career where he can be remembered fondly. You know what I mean? He didn’t leave because of scandal, he didn’t leave because he made some tragic, offensive comment on air. He left because he was tired of dealing with political bulls—t day in and day out and he left because he was tired of being one of the few people calling out the bulls—t.

For Jon’s final night, there was no “celebrity guest” to interview. Instead, all of the comedians who have ever worked for The Daily Show came back to do cameos as correspondents. Every single person who ever had their career championed by Jon, every single person who left TDS for bigger and better things, they all came out to honor him on his last day. Rob Riggle, Ed Helms, the Corddry brothers, Samantha Bee, Nancy Walls, Olivia Munn, Kristen Schall, Steve Carell, John Oliver, Wyatt Cenac (!!!!!), Larry Wilmore and so many more. The final “correspondant” to come out was, of course, Stephen Colbert. And he was the one who made Jon Stewart cry, because of course.

I love what Colbert said to Jon and that Jon wasn’t really prepared for it. After all of the correspondents said goodbye, Jon did a segment on the people working behind the scenes at TDS. Then he did a segment on what he learned, “Three Different Kinds of Bulls—t.” Comedy Central didn’t bleep this, so it’s NSFW-ish because he says “bullsh-t” about a million times. Then he said goodbye. Goodbye, Jersey Boy!!

Bye, Jon! Thanks for everything, hard to believe how much time has passed. I’m gonna go get a drink, too. Hope to see you again soon…

I read the title but skipped the commentary; I haven’t seen it yet. recorded it so will watch later.. Don’ t want to know the spoilers
I will miss him… and his take on things..

  3. Abbott says:

It was nice seeing all those sweet little correspondent faces again.

And I kinda loved how awkward the bit with Wyatt was.

    • LB says:

Seemed intentionally awkward because later Wyatt was among those jumping around with the correspondents. I think they’re probably fine or will be someday.

This was a great way to end. Jon would never take all the credit he deserves, instead choosing to project it back onto others. I’m glad Stephen Colbert and the others weren’t going to let him get away with that though. That moment of gratitude to Jon was so sweet and deserved.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, it was great. And I hadn’t heard about the Cenac thing until just now, I just read the NYT piece. Glad he (Cenac) showed up for the send off, awkward as it was, it was also kinda sweet.

      • Mia4S says:

The Cenac bit was well done and the Twitter crowd (hell, Internet crowd) could take a lesson. People fight, unfortunate things happen, dumb things get said, then hopefully all involved learn and move on!!! This whole forever “problematic” nonsense is just immature and counterproductive. Allow that people can grow, learn, and forgive.

    • laura in LA says:

The bit with Wyatt was done perfectly given what happened, and I only hope it was as sincere as it seemed or TDS comedy could be.

I love him and so going to miss his show especially next few months when the election campaign starts..

  5. INeedANap says:

How are we supposed to get through this coming election without him??? Especially after last night’s debate!

    • Esmom says:

Seriously. I’ll never forget the months leading up to the 2008 election, he was the best thing on air, was just on fire with his incisiveness.

      • Ankhel says:

Election times without Jon just aren’t right somehow. The world’s gotten a bit more boring.

    • Alex says:

Without him AND Colbert it will be rough. We still have John and Larry to pull us through. I’m just happy I got to go to TDS and TCR a few times in the last year before they both ended.

  6. K says:

I’m so heartbroken he is leaving. I just love him. I also thought this ending was perfect and made me tear up a bit.

I can’t believe we have to get through this election without him. One of a kind.

  7. susie says:

I’m so depressed! and so it’s my husband!!!!

  8. Syko says:

Now where am I going to get my news?

  9. Nona says:

I know he was ready to leave, but I wasn’t ready to leave him. Sigh.

  10. DarkSparkle says:

His 9/11 commentary is one of the most touching and honest and just…heart-wrenching things I’ve ever seen on television. I just watched it again and it’s just as powerful. That man is who inspired me to give some craps about politics and current events and the quest of sorting the truth from the bull. Not bad for a comedian. You will be so, so missed Mr. Stewart.

  11. Amy M. says:

It won’t be the same without him and there will never be another Jon Stewart. 😩I may watch the first day Trevor Noah hosts out of curiosity but not sure I’ll be a fan. Someone joked Jon would be doing a podcast last night which I think is a great idea!! I think he would be perfect for it.

  12. SometimesFunny says:

A truly sad day for comedy and television. I’m a fan from germany and I’m rly gone miss him. Thank you Jon.

PS: Colberts words were the best part of the last show. I honestly teared up a bit.

  13. smcollins says:

I’m going to miss him so much! He was the best. 😢

  14. TX says:

My heart is totally broken because he is gone, but I am thrilled for him to do what he wants and watch his kids grow up! Happy trails Jon, thanks for the memories!

  15. belle de jour says:

I love the physical dance between Colbert and Stewart… Colbert trying to herd him before he got away… keeping him near the desk by wheeling his chair around to prevent Jon’s escape from something he found embarrassing… the pas de deux of two friends and colleagues who know each other so well that it is choreographed by their familiarity and affection and respect.

Thanks for posting these clips, Kaiser.
