Lindsey Vonn: ‘On the red carpet, I’m like twice the size of anyone’

Audi Celebrates Emmys 2015
Lindsey Vonn has a new interview with Health Magazine. The 31 year-old skier gets candid about her relationship status after her (inevitable) breakup with Tiger Woods about six months ago. The two were together for three years, which is about three years longer than most people expected them to last. Vonn says she’s single, that she’s focusing on herself at this point, and that she’s trying to get in top shape for the upcoming season.

“I’m single, and I probably will be for a while,” Vonn, 31, told Health magazine in an interview published on Tuesday, Nov. 10. “I think this is just a good time for me to focus on myself. I’m not ready to have a family yet, but I will be at some point. I definitely want a family. I love kids. But right now I’m going to focus on me.”

The professional skier revealed that her split from the golf star, 39, drove her to find her true happiness and get in the best shape possible.

“I think it’s just given me more time to spend on myself,” the Olympian explained. “That’s what happens with most breakups; you really look at yourself and figure out what makes you happy, and you also have a lot more free time. I’m focusing on skiing and I’ve been working really hard. It’s paying off. I got a new nutritionist, and I’m just doing everything I can to be in shape for this season. The most important thing is to eat healthy. So eat whatever your body wants, and try to be as active as you can.”

“I definitely don’t fit in on the red carpet,” she admitted. “I’m like twice the size of anyone, in both height and weight! I’m five-foot-ten, but I’m definitely quite a bit heavier than everyone else. I feel like the odd man out sometimes, but that’s even more reason to be confident, to show girls that you don’t have to be a size 2 to be beautiful. Any size is beautiful as long as you’re confident in yourself.”

Celebrities are a kind of insular group in that they’re much thinner than the rest of society. A while ago I read an article on how celebrity stylists encourage their clients to be very thin so that they’ll be able to fit into free sample sizes. This seemed like just another example of the pressure they’re under to stay small. It’s kind of sad that a super fit athlete like Lindsey Vonn considers herself “twice the size” as the other women on the red carpet. That’s not objectively true at all. She looks so lean, healthy and more than that, strong, which is required for her sport. This reminds me of the ridiculous conversation around Serena Williams as somehow being “bulky” as opposed to “feminine.” These women are incredible athletes, why are people nitpicking their body when their strong bodies show how accomplished they are? It’s just disheartening that Vonn seems to have internalized this and sounds self conscious of her body.

Also, look at her awesome back! I want a back like that.

She looks aspirational. This dress is pretty fug though.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that woman’s body, for the love of god. I wish with all of my heart that these women wouldn’t internalize that crap. Like you wrote, her body is part of her accomplishment.

    • EN says:

She has a perfect body. It is disturbing that everyone on red carpets else is so much skinner.
Sure, dresses look good on skinny people because everything is flat , but they look even better on women with muscle because their shape is beautiful.

      • vauvert says:

I would kill for her body (not really, but you know what I am saying). I never feel that way about the celebs who are so skinny their knees are all bony and sharp, and you think their ankles will break under the pressure of standing in heels. her arms and legs are just incredible, and yes I want her back too:-)
She has an absolutely incredible body. I hope when she is ready to date again she will find a good guy, not a d*bag.

  2. Allie says:

Of course she feels bigger, she’s standing next to women who starve themselves. I would 100% rather have Lindsay’s athletic curvy body than someone like Taylor Swift. Now if that’s your natural body, good for you everyone should learn to love their body type, but I hate seeing these young girls aspire to have a thigh gap, even when that’s not their body type. Curvy or athletic girls have dream bodies too (cough, Hollywood, cough)

  3. Thinker says:

Unfortunate that an accomplished female athlete feels her body is anything less than incredible.

That said, I live in New York but most of my family is Midwestern. My lovely and kind Midwestern family considers me “very thin” or even “skinny” — my dear New York friends and family consider me “average” or “athletic.”

It’s not just celebrities. I’m not sure whether it’s attributable to the fashion industry (probably) or just the added pressures of professional life in New York, but there is definitely a difference between “American Thin” and “New York Thin” (having spent several months in LA I would also put “LA Thin” in the New York category).

    • Jess says:

I would Texas to that list – or probably any big city. My Minnesota farmer family considers me skinny but in Dallas and Austin I was average.

    • Heather says:

People are thinner out of necessity, because there’s just no space in NYC. Try and live in a 400 square foot apartment if you’re 150 lbs and eat 3 meals a day. It’s expensive without a kitchen!

    • Isabelle says:

Last big city lived in got up to a size 10 and felt like a whale compared to others. Then realized it’s mostly women honestly that made me feel huge and actually men treated me no different. Didn’t make those snide remarks and even got more dates than normal. Weight gain is strange thing, some people give you that “look” and others will gravitate more toward you.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Come to Chicago. None of that NYC/LA pressure to be stick thin and then you could be closer to your mid west family! Win-win!

  4. Eggland’s worst says:

Good lord those thighs could crack a walnut. On her point about size, she is right about how we see ourselves. Women seem to be a lot harder on each other and ourselves than men are. We need to stop tearing ourselves, and each other, apart. I would love to have her body, but I’m too lazy and lacking in self-discipline to put in the work.

    • minx says:

She’s a skier. It’s her occupation. Her thighs reflect, you know, her skiing.

      • snowflake says:

Still, they’re really toned. I think it is more than skiing. Even if it is only skiing, its amazing the dedication and discipline and she deserves props for that.

      • polkasox says:

Snowflake – I’ve seen some of her workouts, she works hard year round doing all sorts of leg workouts. She’s a world class athlete, I wouldn’t expect less (as far as what her legs look like)

    • Heather says:

      Her thighs are awesome!

      • Isabelle says:

To have those thighs, I would stare at them in the mirror all day long.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Yes! And I love how she is owning them in that picture. That’s a vulnerable area of the body to show off if you have inner thighs – which most women do and they dont love it. But this is empowering. Let’s embrace the inner thigh!

    • Jenna says:

Those thighs are incredible. That’s what I work toward at the gym. I was judgy of my inner thighs, but now that I see hers…. damn. I’m doing well too. She’s sexy AF!!!!!

    • polkasox says:

She is a BEAST. I’m a skier & even in my best shape last year, after training for months & months, skiing in Colorado kicked my butt. My legs were burning after 10 minutes on the more challenging runs. I don’t always love Vonn but I admire her physique – she’s in awesome shape.

  5. MG says:

I bought my teenage athletic daughter a tank top that says “Strong is the new Skinny”

I’m happy that she seems to really enjoy her thicker, stronger thighs, the definition in her arms and back. She seems more interested in being strong and fit then worried about what the scale says.

  6. Rhiley says:

She has an incredible body, no doubt, but she doesn’t have the best red carpet style to show how beautiful, and feminine her body really is. She looks like Brooke Hogan on the red carpet. The green dress is terrible and does nothing for her figure. Yellow is not a good color for her either. She should wear clothes that soften her features a bit, and show off her muscle tone, but not her tan lines.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Her body is beautiful and I hope she knows that. But really, dating Tiger Woods? After everything we know about him? I think that crazy crazy.

  8. Eleonor says:

Her body is amazing. Strong and fit.
her red carpet style is not that much.

  9. Esteph says:

I’m sorry, but if I had a bod like her I’d be loud and proud that I don’t have a traditional model type body that’s thin and straight.
    Don’t compare yourself Lindsey!

    • Esmom says:

Right on, she looks amazing. The impulse to compare yourself to others can be really strong, and so unhealthy.

As for her back — my co-worker swears that Crossfit is the best way to achieve those muscles. I’ve heard a lot of bad things about Crossfit but her workout seems safe. A little weird, but safe.

  10. isitnaptime says:

I can sympathize with this also being a tall girl’s problem. I’ve fought my body for over a decade now – as someone around Lindsey’s height (I’m 5’11”) even in the normal world I spend a lot of time feeling oversized.
I agree with those who say context is key; certain people consider me skinny while I tend to consider myself as average, but even if objectively I’m around the same size as my friends I hate pictures together because I just look large next to my 5’5″-5’6″ pals. I would imagine being on a red carpet and photographed next to people even smaller than in the real world would kind of suck.

    • Pri says:

      Preach sister!!

People say I am skinny, but I just have long limbs. I am a size 8, and sometimes when I go to Aritzia, I feel like Godzilla.

    • jc126 says:

I agree. It’s easy to say “love who you are, own it” or whatever but being around a bunch of stick-thin, unbelievably tiny women and being the biggest woman in the room would probably be an unpleasant experience for most people. Even when you’re not “big” by any real measure.
I hear (normal weight) people say how “fat” they feel when they go to some places in Europe and are surrounded by really, really slender people.

    • Kath says:

Yep, as someone nearing 6 feet, it doesn’t matter how thin you get, your limbs always feel like tree trunks next to your petite friends. I also spent my entire adolescence slouching so that I wouldn’t tower so much over my friends, who all seemed a foot shorter. (That doesn’t work, incidentally, you still look just as tall, but with lousy posture to boot.)

      • isitnaptime says:

The posture! I just corrected mine in the last year after doing the same thing for so long, but it’s such a hard habit to break.

  11. Maum says:

Nothing wrong with her body and she is an amazing athlete but she’s also an utter famewhore.
Ever since I saw her parading on the golf course on Open family day with Tiger and his children wearing an evening dress I can’t take her seriously. All the other golf partners were caddying up and wearing the baggy uniform and there she was tripping on her long floaty dress. She looked ridiculous.

And she made the same comments a while ago but not in an empowered fashion. She was v bitchy and snidey about all the anorexic actresses who might be skinny but were still flabby and unfit.

  12. Dani says:

I never cared for her but she looks unreal in that yellow dress. Damn.

  13. Lisa says:

Her legs are to die for!

  14. BooBooLaRue says:

    Own it!

  15. WinnieCoopersMom says:

I will put her in the pile of most celebs in terms of how I think about her: I will respect her talents but not her as a person with her life choices. She has said some outrageous things and I also can’t respect someone who dates Tiger Woods. On the point about her strong body, I agree it rocks and she should be proud of it and all the hard work it took to get it like that.

  16. Kate says:

Great body, bad taste. She puts that strong, muscular body in clothing that does not flatter it.

  17. Maum says:

By the way is she wearing knickers in that leopard print greenish dress? Because I have been staring *grins* and I can’t tell.

  18. nicegirl says:

i would love to have a strong, hot lindsey vonn body.
