As predicted, Amal Clooney walked the Berlinale Opening Night red carpet with her husband, George Clooney, for the premiere of Hail Caesar. Before we get to Amal’s whole look, let’s take a moment to focus on George, since it is his film that they’re promoting. Does anyone else think he’s still got significant back problems? It feels like half the time we see him these days, his shoulders are hunched and he’s mid-grimace.
As for Amal… let’s start at the top and work our way down. Historically, Amal has always had great hair. She likes to wear it long and curled, but she occasionally changes it up with a fluffy blowout. I like when she tries new and different things on the red carpet, but this hairstyle is a miss. It makes her hair look damaged and wig-like, and the whole effect is very aging. I also think Amal should rethink this particular shade of red for her lipstick. Does it looks too harsh? Now, the dress. It’s vintage Yves Saint Laurent, from 1981. She either bought or borrowed it from William Vintage. While I like it more now that I know it’s vintage, I still think the sheer overlay with a dust-ruffle bottom is bad. The top half is fine though, very flattering and pretty.
Meanwhile, during the photocall and press conference for Hail Caesar earlier in the day, George was interrogated by a Mexican journalist about his humanitarianism. The journalist asked George to “detail” what he was doing to ease refugee crises beyond, you know, making movies and talking about stuff. George got pissy and replied:
“I spend a lot of time working on these things, and it’s an odd thing to have someone stand up and say, ‘What do you do?’ That’s fine, knock yourself out. I have gone to places that are very dangerous and I work a lot on these things…. I’d like to know what you are doing to help the situation?”
Oooo kitty likes to scratch! You know what that journalist is doing? He’s not putting himself out there as Mr. Hollywood Humanitarian Saves The World. That’s what the journalist is doing. I kind of love the cojones on that guy to be like, “Seriously, what do you do?” I respect Clooney’s work in some respects, but even I sometimes wonder if the hype around him matches his actual efforts.
Clooney also told the journalist that he was planning on meeting Angela Merkel while in Germany, which… sure, I guess Merkel will definitely do more for refugees if George Clooney requests it. It’s not like Germany has already pledged to take in more than a million refugees, right? Thank God she’s got Clooney coming in to take credit for everything!

Exactly. This is staggeringly glamorous, but it also is very contemporary, referencing the sheer skirt trend without falling for it. I agree the hair isn’t helping her, and a darker blue-red lip, like Chanel Dragon Lady (? I think that’s what it’s called) would be perfect. The orange red may be in right now, but it doesn’t work with her colouring, and it’s too bright.
The only reason Clooney is grimacing is because he’s in a contract marriage with a skeletal woman who he doesn’t like. I’d be grimacing too. Re the dress I like it but Amal is not stunning. Candice Swanopoel is stunning. Angelina Jolie was stunning 10 years ago. Charlize Theron is stunning. Amal is an ordinary very thin woman with an angular face who does look glamorous here. But the truth is most men wouldn’t be interested in her. Too thin and her face is not beautiful.
Her face is androgynous & her bold features lack any feminine delicacy. She usually does make-up and hair well, but I see better-looking women at PTA meetings. Tilda Swinton, also androgynous, is beautiful. Cait Blanchette is somewhat androgynous & gorgeous. Amal? Her face would look better padded a bit.
Other excessively thin women (Angelina) don’t parade scrawny thighs in overly short skirts. I want to throw her a double cheeseburger. People criticize Kate Middleton for short skirts or fly-ups, but Amal has most of her dresses shortened, then climbs stairs ahead of crowd & stands on open balconies in hers (de la Renta, in Venice.) Bony biscuits aren’t attractive.

I read the article in the DM about George’s little hissy fit – they had pictures of George when he was replying to the reporter and man, does he ever come across as arrogant and condescending! Lots of eye rolls, lots of facial expressions as if to say “How dare this little nobody reporter question ME, the greatest humanitarian of all time?!?”

We need to do more and the ONLY person who has the ability to get Congress to do that is Paul Ryan. And yes, it must be Congress because a president cannot re-write our statutes. In any case,IMO the European Union, UN, US-everybody-messed up badly in not dealing with the Syria situation years ago. And now, it is not possible to relocate the entire population of a country. Turkey-who is one of the countries feeling the brunt of this issue is resurrecting a proposal they made years ago. They want to establish a safe zone with refugee camps just over the Syrian border, Folks will be kept close to home with the hopes of returning home and receive support from many nations while the Syrian conflict is resolved. And if anyone caught the recent hearing in Congress on the security risk that the Syrian migrants present, James Clapper testified that ISIS is deliberately inserting operatives in the migranst to infiltrate other countries. As has been previously discussed, the idea that this particular group of migrants can be vetted, as the infrastructure of Syria has been destroyed, is not being honest. More and more european countries are reacting to this potential threat. Paul Ryan & GOP verbalized a plan to more carefully vet the Syrian migrants, Not Permanently Refuse Them Admission. If folks pay attention, Dems are also concerned-Diane Feinstein-former head of Intelligence Committee-was also recommending increased scrutiny. No one is dumping on her because she is a Dem, Anyway, your post touched a nerve with me and that is why I am expounding here.
Lastly, if George really was following this issue, he would have done like Angie who has visited the refugee camps several times… I think starting in 2012. Admittedly, she is a special envoy for the UN. George is late to the game and it unfortunately looks as if there is some self serving aspect to his current statements/interest.

When I saw on the news channels that George and Amal were meeting with Ms. Merkel, my first reaction was WTF. The trouble is, she’s elected by the people of Germany, not by Americans, however sincere they may or may not be. So why take an hour out of her day to speak with them. Well, I hate to say this, but Bernie Sanders is right, power and money is everything. If a group of young American College students or young American veterans, who have been fought in the Middle East, wanted to sit down with Merkel, for an hour and talk about what is going on in Germany,would they get an audience? Hate to be a cynic, but no. I am not sure what he has over other people watching the crises .I know lots of money. I wonder if he wrote a big check to help her out or opened up his house in Lake Como to some immigrant families. Sorry, but I had a hard week at work, trying to earn a pay check to pay the mortgage. Not sure how my saying Clooney needs to contact Ryan could hit anybody’s nerve or why you felt compelled to launch into a GOP defense there. My statement was politically neutral. As it stands now, if changes are to be made in current US policy, they must be done statutorily. Which means Congress. And the Speaker of the House at the moment is Paul Ryan.
BTW, anyone who defends Ryan, who has been trying to deprive this cancer patient access to health care, even though I pay insurance premiums, since the second he took office and wants to deprive me of Medicare in the future, is hitting a lot more than my nerves.

In your direct response to that statement, you stated that I “touched a nerve.” Again, I do not see how I possibly did so. I am not responsible for the comments of others. The Speaker of the House, whoever he or she may be, whichever party, is responsible for what topics are discussed on the floor of the House. Likewise, the leader of the Senate is responsible for the Senate. So, again, I restate. Clooney should contact Ryan. He should also contact McConnell although I think his past insults towards the Senate leader may make that difficult.

The dress is nice, but it’s the type of gown I’d expect to see on the star of a film, not the +1 of a past his prime actor. And her need for attention is hilarious – there were photos of her posing on her own and hamming it up for the cameras. Since when do the non-celeb wives of actors pose for individual photos as though they were superstars in their own right?
The one who was really begging for attention among the “Hail Caesar” crowd was Josh Brolin’s girlfriend. She posed as if she was the actual star, and had to be shooed away eventually from the red carpet by an assistant. Amal was tame compared to that.
Josh really lost out. The gorgeous and elegant Diane Lane for this young 20-something budget “personal assistant.” And he bragged recently he’s never been happier in his life personally and it shows in his work. Diane Lane didn’t make him be a massive binge drinker his whole life. A new younger adoring female in his life doesn’t fix that. He has to fix it.
I’m just happy Diane Lane got the hell out of there. I’ve always loved her.

You are so right. Amal is being presented like she’s the star of the movie when she is just there to support her man. Where is Scarlett Johansson who was actually in the movie? Amal’s behaviour is wildly inappropriate and if I were in the cast I’d be angry at the way she tried to take over the red carpet in an attention grabbing gown. And Clooney is all about encouraging it and trying to build her into a celebrity lawyer. That’s why he had the famewhore wedding in front of the cameras too, when he could have had a private affair.

Nice recovery from the pants yesterday…. I think she looks great, glam and RC appropriate. I like the lipstick but I think a touch too much blush. I have her hair and colouring and have to apply blush with a very light hand or it looks clownish. Prefer her hair curly or up, but overall this is a nice look. As for why she poses – if paps ask her, she can do two things: accommodate them (she’s a fameho!!) or turn them down (she’s so snooty, who the hell does she think she is?) what would you do??
yeah, I have a similar colouring and hair to hers too, and blush is something I have to be VERY careful with because it’s so easy to go wrong and over-egg the pudding. (same with the brows, if ever pencils/power are used, it must be with a very sparing hand)

Also, not sure what was wrong with him at the press conference. The reporter to me didn’t seem to be trying to nail him. She had a hard time with her English, and he just kind of went off on her. In addition he really didn’t answer the question or even deflect it well. He said I work very hard on these issues and I travel to these areas what do you do. The funny part was she answered it very well with she helps with some organization. When you make yourself out to be this great humanitarian you are going to get questions about it. To me he really handled it as poorly as I have ever seen him handle anything. Maybe the fact that people are calling Hail Caesar a bomb is affecting him.
Still tabloids are not reporting this, they are reporting what he said to her not her response of his question
I know!!! His PR rep was the same as Charlie Sheen’s for the majority of his career. He kept Charlie’s really crazy under wraps for decades. He quit when Charlie went off the rails completely and wouldn’t listen to him. He just must be really good at his job. Hope George pays him a lot, because am I the only one who gets the feeling that the crazy dam is ready to break with George. Just feel like it is coming soon.
I wonder if he was in pain and not feeling well, to me he doesn’t look good here at all. Also, this was about the film so I get why he might be irritated about being asked about tangential topics.
I think Clooney is just naturally a very arrogant and egotistic person. For years, that was smoothed over by his ‘charm’ and good looks, but now that the looks are fading along with his career – “Hail Caesar” is shaping up to be his 3rd flop in a row – the Real George is starting to show through all the PR hype. And it ain’t pretty.
Boy, Ethelreda – did you hit the nail on the head! I’ve always thought his aw-shucks I’m just a small town humble guy was a huge facade. I used to live in L.A. and I would see him driving around – and he would frequently cut driver’s off, pull in front of people without signaling, etc. Granted – how you drive doesn’t reveal all of your character, but I do think it’s somewhat telling. He has always been career driven and now that his star is fading, he’s pulling out all the stops to maintain his place in the Hollywood celebrity food chain. Hence, the marriage . Also, when you’re under stress – back pain, traveling, 3rd flop in a row – the real “you” surfaces.

At one point Clooney was visibly irked by yet another question on the humanitarian crisis when a Germany-based Mexican journalist asked what exactly the actor was doing to assist. “I’d like to know what you are doing to help the situation?” he asked her pointedly. I mentioned this in the last thread about the Cloons. George lost his cool, and the woman answered in an unaffected manner. He made a fool of himself there. He called her ‘bitch’ at the end, looking at Tatum. God knows what he wants to talk to Merkel about, but mostly, what SHE wants with this. There’s plenty of real stuff to do, and I surely don’t understand why it would be so easy for the Clooneys to occupy her time.
He wants the cred and the publicity without actually doing serious work. I mean, why would him talking about it make that much of a difference? Mythomaniac. And Ang Jolie actually goes into a bunch of refugee camps and makes connections to get coverage for the issue. George is all talk, no action, and his extravagant wife with the billion-dollar wardrobe is a direct contradiction to his humanitarian stance.
I love the dress but the hair is a mess! Completely unrelated but I’m tired of this narrative of Merkel saving the refugees when Germany and other northern European countries couldn’t bother to help with the refugees crisis until it arrived to Calais. Greece, Italy and Spain had to deal with it and save people after shipwrecks on thedaily for a couple years now without the help of the EU, who’s now threatening to suspend Schengen. And I say this as a person who thinks that we could do more to help the refugees but at the same time it shouldn’t be all on the shoulders of southern European countries who can’t “close the borders”. The relocation of the refugees never really happened like it should have so I find ridiculous that we’re looking at Merkel as if she’s this great humanitarian. End of the rant.
Yeah, Germany does a lot, but most of the weight is on Southern Europeam countries, and to a lesser extent on Southeastern European countries. If Germany closes it’s borders all hell will break lose. And now they are saying that they will send refugees to the countries they were registered in – they are basically going to punish countries that bothered to follow the rules. Countries that don’t have the money to deal with refugees and countries the refugees don’t want to be in.
I also think we should do much more tonhelp these people, but the disproportion the effort of different countries in Europe is evident. And that’s especially grating considering some countries were responsible for the mess in the first place.
The US should be taking many many more refugees.

@LockeLamora – the theory behind the Dublin Convention is that those seeking legitimate asylum within member-states of the EU do so based on ensuring their personal security and that they are free from harm or refoulement to their original country from which they have fled for cause. It is considered that all countries within the EU are safe third-countries and therefore that an asylum-seeker need travel no further than a member-state which is their first point of entry. Should they choose to do so it undermines the legitimacy of their motivation for migration as being one of a legitimate need for refuge. They are open to accusations of life-style seeking and of being merely economic migrants without proper case for asylum.
This is particularly relevant as member-states of the EU each offer different conditions in terms of health and welfare entitlements. It became apparent that many countries with more generous welfare and health provisions were considered top choices for economic reasons. This was viewed as unfair on the citizens of those countries to be disproportionately expected to provide for migrants, already viewed as ‘safe’ at their first point of entry, seeking additional economic gain. Short of harmonising the welfare and health provisions throughout all member-states, a political and economic impossibility, it was determined that those seeking asylum must only do so at their first point of entry. However, in order to allow for the additional pressure on those member-states in the South, due to basic geography, the EU distributes extra funding to those countries (as provided by other Northern member-states as net contributors to the EU) to ameliorate for any additional burden.

Additionally, once an asylum-seeker has had their application assessed and met the criterion for claim and been granted refugee status with leave to remain, they have rights of further movement within the EU.

I think it’s one of her best looks she’s done on the red carpet. The gown is beyond flattering. I’m surprised I like her hair away from her face, but I do. I like her hair and her makeup. I give her look a huge thumbs up and a nice recover from the thumbs down she got in the baby-doll dress.
I’m pretty sure my old time Barbie had this same dress. And it looked better on Barbie.
I like the dress minus the tulle, but I’m not sure if it isn’t a bit over-the-top for Berlin. The hair looks dated, but since the dress looks like a ball gown from the 50s, that hair would make sense.
However, George looks tense around his wife, all those studied poses, the gazing, her fake coy smile- they obviously have found their red carpet routine. There are pics with him and Tilda, if you wanne see a relaxed George. He NEEDS a success, and fast. This movie won’t be it, but I also don’t think it’ll bomb.

I vote fab. Wish she’d done something different with her hair though. Hair looks too messy.
I wonder why George has not gotten his injured vertebrae fused? They can do wonderful things with back injuries these days.
George doesn’t have to do any humanitarian work, no one does. But when they do consistently and use their celebrity to bring about awareness to a situation they shouldn’t be accountable for how much they’ve done and what we’re it’s outcomes. These issues are beyond one person. Even if his efforts have changed a single life for the better that is admirable. Everyone should do what they can. I think George answered the question well, he can’t just say hey I’m so awesome and list everything then people will accuse him of bragging and question his humanitarianism. Leave this couple alone. The hate these two get I don’t get it.
But I think when the humanitarian effort becomes a part of the celebrities persona, and they heavily use it for PR, like George, or even Angelina Jolie, they should be questioned about it. They certainly helped a lot of people, but they profited from it in an indirect way too.
To me this isn’t a hating the couple thing, but George has consistently presented himself as a humanitarian in addition to an actor. While he doesn’t have to be one or owe anything to us he has branded himself as a celebrity ambassador of humanitarian issues. Same as Angelina Jolie who also gets all these questions too, because she has done a similar thing. Before anyone gets upset, I am not comparing their actual humanitarian deeds just the image they present.
Did you see the video, because it isn’t really a gotcha question. In fact the reporter had a hard time composing her question, because of her English. It seemed like he was pissed before she started talking. It was just not a good response, and I didn’t catch him mouthing to Channing Tatum that she was a bitch, but if he did it seems even more sophmoric. In fairness most of the time Clooney handles these questions beautifully just not this time and it was odd.

I actually kind of … love this? If I had one negative it’s that I’m not crazy about her hair styling.
To me she’s just off-putting beyond belief no matter what she wears. The makeup here looks cartoonish to me. All the mugging and posing — sheesh. I keep waiting for her to pull a Blue Steel.

I agree about the hairstyle. I do not think this woman is attractive, but I think she has some good fashion sense. The dress is gorgeous and her most beautiful feature–in my opinion–is usually her hair! It looks awful here.

Her hair and makeup are both awful have a closer look she looks way older then 36. The dress is not something someone not a star in the movie should wear it’s the wrong dress for the wrong event. Amal ALWAYS overdresses or just wears bizarre clothes. She is all over the place she is either trying to be quirky or trendy or business like she doesn’t have her own style. She finds out what is in then she buys it and wears it usually the wrong way. As for George and Amal their entire PR is about them being a humanitarian couple so if your going to say you are you are going to get people asking what do you actually do about it? So far we have George and Amal just talking. Amal is even worse then George she protects some of the worse human rights violaters and George saying he goes to dangerous places? That was ages ago and he has bodyguards etc. It seems he is just jumping on the most popular bandwagon. George showed his arrogance and ego when he called that reporter a bitch she asked a question he didn’t like but if he really was doing something to help besides just talk he would have been able to answer the question and not be rude. I don’t think he likes being questioned about anything he better get used to it people are taking a much closer look at the unicorn that is Amal her “career” and George. Thats the problem when your marriage looks like a PR agreement. George is sinking fast he may find it harder to get the money he wants he is box office poison at the moment and his next movie doesn’t sound much better.
Mr and Mrs Fameho Clooney are so ridiculously full of themselves!!! — and it used to be somewhat amusing — but now that they are meddling in global affairs it is becoming truly insufferably offensive.
Don’t like the hair. Hate the orange blush. The lipstick looks good in most of the photos and it’s a great color on her with her dark hair. Would absolutely love the dress if it didn’t have the sheer part on it; I can’t figure out why the designer would ruin such a gorgeous gown with that part.
Amal’s nose lokks much better. The original was not so good. She had other things done, quite subtle, and a boob job. Why not.
It must be just me as she looks thinner than ever if that is possible- she is veering into Rancic territory.
