Jessica Chastain presented Best Male Lead at last night’s Spirit Awards (that went to Abraham Attah of Beasts of No Nation!) and she’s actually the “honorary chair of film independent.” I googled it because I do research like that, and I still don’t know what it means exactly. She’s been nominated twice before but hasn’t won, so maybe that’s why they wanted to recognize her. Chastain hasn’t won an Oscar yet either, and I feel like that she’ll get one in the next few years. I really hope so.
You can see a complete list of winners here and YouTube has clips from the ceremony.
Anyway Chastain wore this purple lace Elie Saab gown which highlights the issue she’s had on so many red carpets past – her boobs aren’t supported. You may think I’m joking, but I’m really not. It’s an otherwise very pretty dress and I like the color. Plus her styling is gorgeous. I want to do my hair like that now.
Marisa Tomei was in this twee white and floral embroidered Stella McCartney gown. It’s the Spirit Awards and this could have been a great dress if it was tailored for her properly but it just hangs there like a sack. I do like the idea of the dress though.
Juno Temple (Far from the Madding Crowd, Black Mass) was in Valentino which is SO overworked for the Spirit Awards. Tone it down a notch lady. Something nice: her hair is awesome and her makeup is super cute. I had hair like this in the 90s and I like that it’s making a comeback. Also, the birds on the bodice are cool. With a shorter, plainer skirt this might have worked. This did not need the blue lace on the skirt or down the sleeves.
Nikki Reed was in an Etro gown which I can’t decide if I like. The front looks like a bib or apron. I really like the contemporary detailing around the bust but it looks weird paired with that kind of 70s baroque print. It’s like two different personalities crammed together in one dress. Her styling is gorgeous though.
Lauren Cohan is giving me #abgoals in this Alice & Olivia white wrap crop top paired with high waisted blush colored Eloise pants. I’m just not feeling this look, it’s another case of two things which do not go together. She brightens it up with her expression though. Just try to imagine Rooney Mara in this. This makes me bummed that I have to wait to watch Walking Dead until after we’re done with Oscar coverage Monday. There are worse things than having to wait an extra day to watch a show you get to talk about for your job.

Ah, yes, Cohan’s dress on Mara would’ve looked depressed and lonely, ready for being put away in the closet with all the other summer clothes ( because, OT, winter is coming after all).
Ahahaha! This is my favourite comment today. Poor Rooney, the tragedy and ennui of sipping a cocktail and receiving applause. 😉
Abraham Attah was so adorable and genuine in giving his thank you speech. So glad he AND Idris won <3
Me too! Well deserved.
Same here. Happy for Mya Taylor too.
That kid’s smile is all kind of awesome.
Sigh. I guess I’m just not a fashionista. I could have pulled something off the rack at Target for these lovely ladies that would be prettier and more flattering than this “designer” crap.
Really? lol
What an unfortunately placed necklace. Weird.
And it’s a beautiful necklace.
Beautiful necklace but all kinds of wrong with that dress. I though it was attached to the dress to help hold the bodice up.
Is it supposed to be sexy?? Like explicitly suggestive of the possibility of…ones hands rolling around between her breasts? That’s the only reason I can assume motivated that choice. Aesthetically it looks annoyingly wrong.
I saw Jessica’s photos on Getty and thought it was ill-fitting, definitely too tight and boobs are not supported properly. But it’s a great color on her.
I love Marisa’s look, great dress and killer shoes. The rest is a disaster, IMO.
I love the color on Jessica, but agree it’s not supportive enough, and the banding above her waist isn’t flattering on anyone.
Lauren is pulling that look off. I’d generally dislike it, but she’s making it work.
Jessica is a beauty but this dress from the waist up is awful. you don’t need a stylist to see that it’s ill fitting, why couldn’t she just look in the mirror? Nikki looks gorgeous, love her dress.
The color on Jess is lovely as usual, but she needed to support the girls better. I didn’t really care for the bodice of the dress. A rare C- from someone whose red carpet style I typically like.
That necklace on Jessica is all wrong. Pretty dress love the color on her but it is too tight in the top and waist.
Chastain’s stylist hates her. LOL. The top of her dress makes her boobs look saggy, the middle is very bunched up and bulge-y, and then the bottom is just … come on.
Holy bejeezus Lauren Cohan looks like Michelle Monaghan!
I like the color and shape of Jessica’s dress but it makes her look heavy. It looks like she has stomach rolls although she’s thin and of course non-support.
Despite the gorgeous color, this just confirms that Chastain (and her stylist) haven’t a clue how to select a dress that flatters her figure.
Ι love Lauren Cohan’s look. The two items go fine together.
Horrible dress on a beautiful woman. The bra part of it looks too big, like her boobs are swimming in the material, and the rest of the bodice is far too tight…it makes her look like she has fat rolls. The necklace is completely out of place with the dress. The rest of the dresses aren’t much better…who styles these women, and how much are they paid to do such awful work?
Usually, I find a whole bunch of dresses just look cuter on petite women. This is the first time where I think some of the dresses could have worked better on a longer frame. I actually really like Juno Temple’s dress. I think it’s interesting, but way too busy on such a tiny woman. Likewise, I think Jessica Chastain’s dress would have been flirty and fun on someone tall/willowy. No, I am not calling Jessica fat. She’s so freaking beautiful. Even ill fitting clothes happen to gorgeous ladies. As for Nikki Reed’s dress, my first instinct was to like it and I kept looking–CB is right. It looks like a bib.
Umila – I literally LOL’d at your post. How tall is Chastain? My first thought was . . . mygawd she and I have the same upper torso. I’ve never ever ever before compared myself to Jessica Chastain, who I would assume is both taller and thinner than I am, but I feel like I now know what that dress would look like on me, and I’m going to give it a pass.
Jessica has the most exquisite coloring. That dress is worse than sitting next to a Feeler on the subway.
Agree on the comments re Jessica’s dress AND can’t fathom wanting a necklace to hang down into your cleavage…that’s all I see.
I love Juno’s entire look. I have hair a lot like hers! I just can’t do the bangs, like she can. She reminds me of a younger, prettier version of SJP. Her look is so fresh and unique.
They all women are bisexual but I think those studies are really flawed in their methodology, but my real point is that Jessica would be the one to turn me bi if I were ever so inclined. Stunning woman. I think that outfit was designed to get her lots of mentions. And I like Juno and Marisa; both ladies looking good too.
Jessica’s dress color is wonderful, but sadly the rest of it is a mess. Marissa’s dress would be difficult for just about anyone to pull off, but fortunately I think she is able to wear it well in the pictures I see. Juno, Nikkii and Lauren are all beautiful ladies, but the dresses are not so much.
No one looks terrible but I think some of the problems are tailoring, color and silhouette issues. Marisa’s styling looks lazy.
