Yay! Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria has given birth to her second child. She gave birth yesterday in Sweden, and her husband Prince Daniel was there every step of the way. He even cut the umbilical cord! Victoria and Daniel welcomed a 8 pound baby boy they have named…
OSCAR CARL OLOF
Do you think they were influenced by the Oscars? Or did they just like the name Oscar? Carl is Victoria’s father’s name, and Olof… I have no idea what the significance of that name is. Yeah, it reminds me of Frozen too, which I’m sure is one of Princess Estelle’s favorite movies, so maybe “Olof” was just in the air. Update: Ah, so it’s Daniel’s first name, good to know.
Princess Estelle – who will follow her mother onto the Swedish throne now that primogeniture has been done away with in Sweden – was asleep when Victoria gave birth, but Estelle was one of the first visitors to meet Prince Oscar. The family of four also posed happily for a photo as they were leaving the hospital (the header photo, above). Apparently, Estelle was pretty pleased that she was getting a younger sibling, but Victoria told the press last year that Estelle probably would have preferred a hamster.
Daniel apparently cried when he announced the birth to the press:
As tears streamed down his cheeks, Daniel told the press that the couple had kept the baby’s gender a surprise and that he was delighted to welcome a little prince. He even revealed that he cut the umbilical cord and assisted during the birth.
“They are doing great and have been really well-cared for,” Daniel told reporters. “I have not had time to feel just yet how it feels to be a father of two,” he continued. “But it feels good so far!”
Aw, this is why I’ll always be a Daniel fan-girl. He honestly adores his wife and his children and he sees it as his job to support Victoria fully.

Cute just got cuter.
I love this family.
They are the best royal couple.
They are my favourite royal couple, by far. I will totally fangirl Prince Daniel.
Congrats – what a cute name. I just love this couple and Estelle is the cutest little girl ever.
And yes I’m Daniel fan girl too, he comes across as just the nicest guy. Nothing sexier than a man who loves his wife & family and not afraid to show it.
Agree 100x
They just seem so in love 15 years on. It’s amazing. And it makes him so loveable.
Agreed on everything you said. They seem a really happy and content family. Love the picture of Estelle alone with her umbrella.
And I find Daniel sexy as hell!
Aw man, I want to meet someone who will love me that much. That sounds terrific!
Yes Daniel comes across as a lovely guy.
Olof is Prince Daniel’s real first name. Daniel is his middle name.
Yup, it’s his real first name.
And his father’s name is Olle, which also comes from the name Olof.
Daniel’s real name is Daniel and it always has been. The order of names is inconsequential in Sweden.
Wonderful news, I love that family!! Thanks for continuing to cover them – they’re a breath of fresh air.
I believe Olof is one of Daniel’s names. Can’t wait to see the little one, I’m sure he’ll be just as awesome as Estelle.
I sniffed back a tear when I read the press announcement. What a lovely family.
Such a beautiful family. They always seem so warm and inviting. And since she left hospital a couple hours after giving birth, I take it that everything went well in delivery. Hopefully the family can enjoy some time adjusting to a new little Prince in the house.
Little baby OLAF :} What a sweet family. The daughter looks just like her mother!
Oscar I was King in Sweden between 1844-1859, Oscar II was King between 1872-1907. And that’s probably why they named him Oscar.
The name Oscar has appeared in all or most of the generations of the Swedish Royal Family of Bernadotte since Oscar I; with historical and dynastic connection going back hundreds of years.
Beautiful family, congrats and all the best. I love how she came out and posed in “normal” clothes, I bet there was no hairstylist there to give her a blowout before she left like some others we know😜
And he sounds lovely, exactly the kind of loving husband and father my husband is. Glad she stood her ground and married the right man! And their daughter is just the most adorable ever. Look forward to lots more pics and coverage of them as they grow up.
Ha! Yes, I wish this family was covered half as much as that other one. Although I suspect they actually put in work so when they leave the palace it’s not treated as if it might be the last time they are seen for months.
Victoria is very no nonsense when it comes to hair. She almost always wears her hair up in a simple bun when working. it is only during galas that the Swedish royal hairdresser gets to do something fancy.
Agree vauvert—a lot more relatable than appearing in a bespoke dress, high heels, and an elaborate blowout hours after giving birth.
Lovely family.
congratulations to the happy parents and older sister!
and also to the Royal Family!
to think that this joyous occasion will repeat again in a few weeks time. Princess Sofia was glowing at the church today for the thanksgiving ceremony!
honestly i think the three Swedish royal siblings married their chosen partners very well indeed.
Oscar is a fairly common name in Scandinavia. Back in the 1800s there was a King who originally came from France (he was adopted by the Swedish King because there were no heirs) and his son was named Oscar….so it popularized the name in Sweden.
I like the Swedish royalty…They always seem put together (even Karl and his wife) and they work unlike William and Kate.
We’re Karlsens, overseas and I always wanted to name my hypothetical son Karl/Carl. Partly because of Carl on Shameless too…
Ha! I love that Carl is the Gallagher that you want to name your kid after. May he grow up to have even half the hustle.
I burst out laughing at the hamster comment. Maybe little Estelle will get a hamster soon!
Victoria got a lot of nasty press about her body when she was younger because people are awful. I’m happy that Daniel so openly adores her, she needs that in her life.
Her body ?? What’s wrong with her body ? People are crazy.
Yes i remember reading about that – didn’t she end up getting treatment for an eating disorder because of it? And isn’t that something to do with how she met Daniel – going to the gym he ran/owned?
The York Princesses had the same issue with the tabloids – Beatrice got nasty shade because of her perceived overweight. There was nothing wrong with them.
i thought i read somewhere it began because she was bullied at school for dyslexia? it then turned into ED which only made her being ridiculed for her body (emanciated etc).
thank goodness she looks so happy and strong and secure now. her smile is so infectious.
Vic was a little more rotund as a teen but I don’t remember her getting bad press about it. After finishing high school she went to France to study for a year and she came back from there really toned and that was complimented by the press. She continued to lose more and more weight that autumn and it was obvious at that year’s Nobel that she was sick. By that time the press had stopped writing about it.
I remember she got press about her body when she was skinny (she then was treated for an eating disorder) but not before. Maybe it was the insecurity to many teenagers go through, and not necessarily bad press that made her ill?
I think V was already suffering from the ED when she came back from France and that the “good” press she got about her body probably accelerated it.
I have friends who ran into the royal fam at different functions during the 90’s and according to them, Silvia policed what V ate very thoroughly. They told me about it before V went to France, while she was still well so I think it is true.
The Court announced that she was suffering from anorexia nervosa. You can see it in the gala photos of that year, her in the long-sleeve purple gown that was copied later in Princess Diaries. She went to school in the US for a period of time, to get out of the limelight in Sweden to aid her recovery. It was after she was doing better that she started working out at Daniel’s gym (he owned the gym) I think. She has spoken of how Daniel was a big part in her regaining her strength and happiness.
They are so cute together.
He clearly adores her, and she is really working and enjoying her royal status. Congrats !
I love this family.
Thank you, Kaiser, for covering this!
So happy for the family. Victoria and Daniel have done a wonderful job with Estelle. I know little Oscar will be just as loved and adored as his big sister.
Hurrah! I love this family-so cute!
Her sister in law is due pretty soon right?
Just made my day!!! Thank you for posting about this.
I think you mean male primogeniture, primogeniture is still happening (and the law changed long ago).
Happy for them, nice how many kinds Swedish royal family has these days and more to come soon. Oscar is more traditional name than Estelle, wonder if they were affected by the backlash on her name. But it could be just a name they liked.
Love this family. Not a huge fan of the name Oscar due to Sesame Street. That name will forever be associated with a garbage can thanks to Oscar the Grouch.
But the important question is, does this count as a engagement.
LOL
I’m as cynical as can be with royal families, but I love a good, genuine love story. I adore how all the Swedish siblings found what appears to be the right partner for them, whilst not neglecting the need for a good public consort.
If I looked at the header picture and didn’t know who they are, it would probably never occur to me that they are royalty. They look so normal and relatable. Congratulations and all the best for them!!!
More coverage of the Swedish royals please and much less of the English. The Cambridges are a yawn.
They haven’t gotten rid of primogeniture in Sweden. They have gone for strict primogeniture instead of the old agnatic primogeniture which preferred the first-born son over any older sisters.
