Washington DC got glamorous last night, and for once, it wasn’t because the Obamas bring their own stardust. No, Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau is here in America on a state visit, and last night the Obamas hosted a glamorous state dinner for Prime Minister Trudeau and his wife Sophie. Michelle Obama wore Jason Wu, and Sophie wore Lucian Matis. I like Michelle’s dress more than Sophie’s dress, but I like that Sophie is wearing a bright, vivacious color.
Here’s a nice shot of the toast:
People were also going on and on about how nice Trudeau and Obama looked together earlier in the day, and it seemed like the two leaders and neighbors got along really well. Here’s a really nice shot of Trudeau watching Pres. Obama speak during their joint press conference on the White House’s south lawn.
An assortment of proud Canadians (or former Canadians who are now American citizens) came out for the state dinner, like Sandra Oh, Mike Myers, Lorne Michaels and more. Including Canada’s pride, Ryan Reynolds. Ryan still maintains a home in Vancouver, and all of his family still lives in or around Vancouver, I’m pretty sure. Ryan brought his American wife, Blake Lively. I really, really do not care for Blake’s Ralph & Russo dress. I think this was a bad choice for a state dinner. It looks like she’s just wearing a fancy robe.

Mr and Mrs Trudeau look great!
Lively’s gown is awful. She usually makes good choices, outfit wise, but this is just hideous.
Mr. Trudeau and Ms. Gregoire. Please.
Thank you!
That gown is full on Alexis Carrington Colby glamour!
I know! It’s tacky, what was she thinking?
OMG Yes!! Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter would be so, SO proud of that gown.
The only excuse for Blake’s dress is that someone stole her actual dress and she had nothing except for her robe.
It looks like a 1980s bathrobe.
Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan!!!
In Quebec women typically do not take their husband’s last name so she goes by Sophie Gregoire.
Why did Blake Lively wear her bathrobe to a state dinner? I’ve seen very similar robes on the rack at Goodwill, probably from the 80’s.
Come on folks, cut Lee some slack. Clearly had good intentions and a positive message. No need to correct over an honest mistake of not knowing the culture of Quebec.
Lee, your variation of Mrs. Trudeau name is socially correct–Sophie Gregoire Trudeau (with or w/o a hyphen). And, yes, she looks lovely. Blake’s gown…no words.

@Olenna
Thanks!I surely didn’t wasnt to disrespect her, it was just easier to go with Mr and Mrs!
Didn’t she add the Trudeau for the election campaign? That would be a pity if it were politically motivated.
When you get married in Quebec, unlike in other provinces in Canada, you keep your maiden name. If you want to have your husband’s name, you need to go through an official name change request. She was always Sophie Gregoire but in the last election cycle, the English Canadian press, not them!, started refering to her as Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau. The Quebec press still calls us Sophie Gregoire. Justin and Sophie probably just didn’t make a thing of it, the same way I would just chuckle if all of a suddent my husband’s name was added.
We don’t automatically change our names in Ontario either. Currently, it is necessary to officially change it — and it is less common for women to do so than in the past, although maybe Quebec is ahead of the rest of Canada in women keeping their names.
In the U.S., the last name doesn’t get changed automatically either, and lots of women I know (including me) have chosen to keep their maiden name. If you want to change your last name after marriage, there’s a whole legal process you have to go through.
It’s different in the US than it is in Quebec. When you get married in the US you can change your name at the same time as you get married. You’re not allowed to do that in Quebec, to the point where I know people who left the province to get married so they could have the name change done as well. Most people keep their maiden names though.
As far as I know, marriage isn’t even considered a justifiable reason for a name change request in Quebec so it isn’t just that most women here don’t make the legal change after getting married but that we can’t. I got married at the courthouse and the vows we were required to repeat included a sentence about how we would keep our last names.
That’s really fascinating Lee. Is there some kind of historical reason for it?
I want to know too and I’m Canadian, but all the way over in BC. Culturally, Quebec is quite different and beautifully interesting.
I believe the original custom comes from France (apparently it is historically common for women to use their husband’s name socially but their maiden name legally), however it only became law in Quebec that we couldn’t take a spouse’s name in the early 80s as part of Quebec’s attempts to promote women’s rights. Personally I find it a bit paternalistic, but that’s just me. I didn’t intend to change my name anyway though so it doesn’t really affect me. Functionally, it means A LOT of people now have hyphenated surnames (one from each parent) which gets messy after a generation or two but people make it work.
No judgement on wearing them because I love them too, but you can see her Spanx is some of the photos the slit is so high. Such a bad choice for this event.
In one of Lainey’s photos, the close- up reveals a snap that came undone. (Probably when she got out of the car.)
Overall, the dress is kinda meh for me.
Lively’ gown looks like a bathrobe.
Even if the dress didn’t look like a bathrobe — showing that much skin at a White House dinner? Tacky, tacky, tacky.
Blake looks like she thought it was 70’s Night at the White House. Sophie Gregoire is everything. Everyone is always talking Trudeau, but she is definitely going to be just as integral to his term as Michelle was for Obama’s. I think the position should become a partner position, if you enter office with a spouse. There’s no doubt they made everything possible one way or another, and they make Kate Middleton look quite shabby indeed.
A strong marriage is attractive (it helps when both spouses are attractive too) but I’ll never forget how much I loved going to my childhood best friend’s house because her parents were so kind, so loving and so together. Neither parents would ever agree to something before discussing it with the other, they were always supportive and on the same page. It was the strongest marriage I ever saw first hand. When they moved away, I missed the parents more than the girl.
As for Blake, I actually feel bad for her. This was a big night, probably her and Ryan’s biggest of the year, they met the U.S. President and the Canadian Prime Minister, and this is what she scrounged up to wear?? Does her stylist hate her?
Why is Obama toasting with water. He pregnant? Or just got sh*t to do afterwards?
-TheRealPinky
Maybe Blake thought she was meeting Pierre and Margaret… so dated. It seriously looks like a cross between a bathrobe and Carol Burnett’s drapes. I guess one has to step it up with these super fashionable first ladies.
Bahahaha great comment!
Boobs Legsly.
That photo of Trudeau looking at Obama speak = proud girlfriend realness.
Blake’s dress looks like the shower curtain at my granny’s house. She should have just googled “Michelle Obama state dinner” and worn something similar to what she has done in the past. No need to reinvent the wheel.
LMAO!!!
Yeah, blake went a little too t and a for a white house visit, and her ring is tacky.
I actually like Blake’s dress. I know I’m one of the few but I actually like it a lot. As for Ryan Reynolds…is it just me or has he been looking fine lately? Maybe it’s the salt and pepper look or something. Anyways something happened between last February and now where I actually like Blake and Ryan together. Like I think they’re adorable and cute. I’m here for them.
I like Blake, but you should dress appropriately for the occasion, and this is a state dinner. You don’t wear slit up to here and down to there. It’s disrespectful.
It’s because she was walking. If you actually look at the style of the dress the slit is not even noticeable when she’s just standing around.
I think the neckline that goes down to her waist and looks like it’s about to fall open is enough.
Agree. She doesn’t have to look dowdy–look at Mrs. O, she’s showing skin but she looks tasteful and pretty.
Everything about Blake’s dress is cheesy and inappropriate–the shiny material, those shoulder things, the cleavage and the leg slit.
I can’t believe she looked at her self in the mirror and thought she looked great for a WH dinner.
@GNAT
ITA
I totally agree. And if you can’t walk in a dress without flashing, then you need to find another dress for this occasion. Walking is usually necessary at such events…unless you’re Mariah Carey. 😉
I think a little sexy would have been ok, but such exposure on top and bottom throws off the balance and makes it extreme.
I don’t love Blake’s dress but I am with you about liking them suddenly. He has grown on me and I was happy his film succeeded. I think maybe, for me at least, they aren’t in my face all the time or manipulating their image obsessively. They seem like a couple who enjoys each other and are as you say adorable to me too.
I love them as a couple also, but I’ve always like them a lot individually before they got together.
I never disliked them but sort of forgot them a little after Ryan’s career stalled. I liked him in many films but he never seemed to break out. Blake seems good for him and they match well. 🙂
The color is nice but otherwise I do not know what she was thinking.
I like Blake’s dress too, I don’t love her hairdo though. Mrs. O looks great but the dress is a bit tight on the boobs.
I can’t believe what Blake wore. The robe/gown wide open like that boobwise, and the bottom half that opened up when walking far too high and showed her Spanx. I’m surprised by Blake. This was a big state dinner, not an award show for celebs to bring out the boobs with her gown open almost down to her waist.
Sophie and Michelle look great.
Malia and Sasha are growing up and such pretty girls and were very striking in their outfits at the dinner.
Both first couples look very nice. Blake Lively’s dress is completely inappropriate, and will probably feed the Fox News narrative about how the Obamas just luuuuv Hollywood.
She usually wears nice dresses, isn’t she still the face of Gucci? Chanel? Oh Blake, why?
Agreed.
Appropriate or not, that dress is just HIDEOUS! Like the kind of item you find at a cheap clothing store and hold up for your friend and say, “Hey you should try this!” and then you both laugh.
I’m kind of loving the Trudeau Obama bromance. It’s nice.
Honestly – I wasn’t 100% sold on Trudeau during the election – partially due to Trudeau overload. But you know – he’s exactly what we needed. And the racist, xenophobic, homophobic jerks that pop up on my newsfeed who used to live in NS but now live in Alberta – they haaaate him. And it makes me like Trudeau even more.
The more I hear about the American elections, the happier I am to live in Canada. For the first time in a while I’m genuinely proud of the kind of person our leader is. And I was a former Harper voter – we needed some change when he first got in – but he overstayed his welcome, and now we have the better Trudeau.
He’s seems like a great guy and I wish we had someone like him who could and would run in the U.S.
You do, his name is Barack Obama! 😉
@tris. +10000
Tris, indeed.
I too switched from Harper to Trudeau in the last election – mostly because I wanted a change of tone in our national discourse. And I love what Trudeau’s done with Cabinet. But the fawning needs to stop. He’s just a man, and an untested leader to boot.
Not fawning, hopeful.
I have voted Liberal since the day I became a Canadian and finally had the right to vote. But it is the first time I am proud of the leader we have. It strikes me how unusual it is in this day and age to have a political leader who is actually inspiring, who you could give as an example to your kids, and who makes you proud of your country. (I also happen to love Sophie, but that is a bonus…)
@prairiegirl, why do I need to stop fawning? Of course he is just a man, all celebrities and political/religious/business leaders are. They all have to brush their teeth, go to the bathroom, get a head cold and have bad hair days. That has nothing to do with what I like about him, I am just really happy to see the changes – from a cohesive environmental policy which we never had before, to actually having an open social media policy for the party (never seen before in Canada), to actually bringing in the refugees as promised… yep, he makes me happy and it has nothing to do with looking photogenic. If that’s all you notice, that is your privilege.
Barack and justin both disprove the cliché that politics is just showbiz for ugly people. Of course there are also plenty of politicians to prove the theory.
Vauvert, a lifetime of experience working with them has taught me that Great Men are not… great. Colour me cynical, I lost my enthusiasm years ago. Different stripe, same pile. Eventually.
He does seem really respectable and someone to be proud of as a leader ; I just hope the results will be good, he hasn’t done much to judge yet
I love Canada but since you guys sent us Ted Cruz and Beiber can we keep Trudeau?
Sorry, sorry, sorry. But if I could just politely point out – the Cruz family abandoned us for the oil fields of Texas. As for Beiber, sorry, sorry, sorry. Everyone leaves for US money.
Maybe if I send Cruz’s campaign some brochures about the finer points of living in Alberta he will go on his own. WATP now I’m stuck with that Sorry song in my head. Ugh.
Magnoliarose sorr….oh, I’ll stop that.
Ha ha. No. You keep Cruz and Bieber. Love flotus’ dress!! Sophie’s not as much but live the colours. Blake is too sleazy looking
You could argue it was the US that corrupted Beiber. He was just a little youtube kid when he went south. 😉
People are legit shipping them together and I’m like “what about Joe?”
JK I love the two together and Trudeau has done great things so far from what I’ve seen. Particularly with the immigration into Canada which was very moving to see as an American looking at the state of things here.
Down for this friendship.
I’m apolitical and was wondering how Trudeau was doing and how Canadians were feeling about him. Glad it’s a good thing!
Nice that you aren’t a sheep, lady! I mean I find that most people on my newsfeed are soooo anti Harper and they don’t even sound intelligent about why they hate him. I actually voted for Harper this time, (the last time I voted green I think) not that I agree with him for everything but for our family’s taxes it’s a lot better, I can’t imagine a national daycare being good in Canada (though it’s lovely in France, just wouldn’t trust it here) and I agree on some things. He lost and now I kind of forgot about him and Trudeau is not a disaster. I’m not going to be bitter for the next 8 years like the Obama haters. just hoping he does well and please let the cnd dollar go up sometime soon so I can get back to my online shopping habits :/
The fact that national daycare is even remotely in election conversations is incredible…makes me sad down here in the US
I’m an American living in Canada on PR status and I must say, I am far prouder of Trudeau than the elections going on in the US presently. Can you imagine Trudeau or Obama discussing his ahem package size? The national daycare and heck maternity leave up here in general makes the US seem very anti-family. Most mothers up here breastfeed for 1 year, I don’t know any of my friends in the uS who were able to do so past 3 months!
Hear hear Erinn. I’m also from Alberta and got 2 shocks last year (good ones!) when the PCs got trounced by Notley and “Junior” (as Harperites disparagingly called Trudeau) demolished Harper et al. Breath of fresh air indeed.
Holy.crap. I can hardly believe how cavalier you are about having voted for Harper. And then the rest of what you said. Mind blown.
The rest of us in Canada, who recognized how dangerous and vile Harper was and never voted for him, wondered who these people were who voted for him. Thanks for clearing it up.
I’m surprised too, I don’t usually hear moderate and rational people saying they voted Harper. Then again, we don’t really vote for our PM, we vote for their party.
I love Michelle’s dress. I feel like Obama and Trudeau probably have a lot of similarities and got along well.
Blake’s dress is awful, and I don’t really think a White House state dinner is the place for a plunging neckline like that.
I love Michelle’s dress too. It perfectly fits the season, almost spring but not quite.
Everyone looks great. Blake’s dress does look like a fancy bathrobe though. Is that Ryan’s hairline, or was his hair purposely shaved like that do you think?
So glad y’all enjoy Prime Minister Zoolander. He’s very, very untested.
He’s way better than Despicable Stephen Harper. WAY better! Just look at his approval ratings! They’re higher now than when he won his majority victory.
Meh, he photographs better.
i’m with you Sara. Harper ruined the country, with his fear mongering, hatred xenophobia, along with his total ignorance liked to environmental issues.Trudeau will rebuild, and has his work cut out for him, but has started well. Super exciting!!
Untested by what?
Since he took over, he has done exactly what he promised during the campaign, and the reason we voted him in. If you are Canadian and not happy, you could always move south of the border. I bet you’ll find someone currently living there who’d be happy to trade with you…
Vauvert don’t be ridiculous. I’ve met 3 of the last 4 Liberal prime ministers, including Pierre Trudeau. I’m not going anywhere. The LPC establishment practically handed Justin the party hoping to get traction in the polls. It worked but he has a long way to go. Jury’s out. Believe me.
Ignore the Prarie troll.
Probably Mrs Harper
@willful ignorance: ha ha that’s what I was thinking!!!
Weird you said that because before I read your post I said I’d trade gladly. I hate our election and parties right now
Considering the rumours that Laureen did not live with him in Ottawa, I doubt she would be posting this stuff.
As for being tested, what does it say when a leader who has been in power for years thinks it’s okay to bring in a barbaric practices hotline which is the most racist thing ever? That is a failed test right there.
@willfull ignorance, am I troll as well because I don’t think Trudeau is actually the right man for the job and that a liberal majority government is going to hurt us Canadians in the long run…
Pray tell what else has he done, besides add more women to the cabinet? Has electoral reform been put on the table? As a BC’er I can say that those pipelines haven’t been shut down on a federal level…
We forget, but the last round of liberals with a majority government also left Canada in debt and stole much like the Conservatives. I am glad Harper is gone, I just have little faith in any party being given a majority government. Gives me the heebie jeebies. However I will take that over the US gov’t any day..
Uh, the Liberals didn’t leave a debt. They left a surplus. Which Harper and Co promptly p*ssed away.
Ummm @Scotchy, check your facts. The Liberals left a surplus. It’s Harper that screwed that up
Hey Willful Ignorance, Snazzy et al you’re pretty funny. I’ve met Mrs. Harper, and I assure you she’s not me. I’m a card carrying member of the LPC since 1982 though. I’m definitely entitled to, and earned the right to, my opinions. Calling me (or anyone) a troll doesn’t change that.
I voted for Trudeau but the jury’s out on him.
Nic919 – funny u mention re Laureen Harper not living with Steve in Ottawa. The Intel was that she had an affair with one of her RCMP bodyguards. The press decided not to run it as it was their personal life – all except the Sun group. They got a call from the PMO threatening to bar them from press conferences if they ran it. And so they didn’t. This was around the time of the Vancouver olympics – take a look at their body language back then – they hate each other and stayed together for political expediency…
@Redgrl. Not just any RCMP bodyguard – wasn’t it allegedly a woman officer? When I first heard the rumour I took a gossipy enjoyment of it, until I thought about how lonely Laureen must be, being in a marriage with Harper, a man with not an ounce of kindness or empathy for people who don’t fit into his view of the world. Then I just pitied her.
@Prairiegal, I’m not a Liberal supporter at all, but I’m not too worried about Trudeau himself being ‘untried, ‘ because he’s smart enough to surround himself with people who are smarter than him. Will they lead him down the garden path? Well, at the very least, half of his cabinet/advisers are known quantities: Martin and Chretien holdouts who know how to run a government, slash budgets, and entice business through trade deals and preferential regulations, which is really not that different from what Harper was doing. I do think the Liberals do have a better grasp of the Canadian economy than Harper, who unbalanced the national economy by letting Alberta’s oil and gas become too influential over the whole. Part of the benefit of the Liberals being such a patronage party is that they have to spread the ‘rewards’ out more evenly across the country.
@livvers, great comment. I agree on the economics, but can’t sign on for any praise about the Liberals being a patronage party, even if it’s relative.
Livvers – yes, I had heard that about the female officer but I don’t know if that part is true. The rest is confirmed from someone who was part of the media meetings. I too feel sorry for her – time is precious. I would have thought she’d have left him by now.
untested does not mean bad. i’m very impressed with how he has started out. it’s a nice change to have a Prime Minister that brings hope and opportunity for a positive future. with Stephen Harper it was all about fear and mistrust.
And with Harper it was all about leaving too little money in the bank for the Trudeau government to do what voters asked without making hard choices, too.
Harper left a badly unbalanced economy, bigger deficits than he wanted to admit, a health care system starved for cash and federal coordination, narrowly ideological foreign policy and a weakened diplomatic corps, a bloated Ottawa PR apparatus, ridiculous levels of secrecy, and a deeply resentful and openly bigoted following that clearly still believes it deserved to ‘rule’ forever.
Harper blew threw the surplus left by the liberals in the first few years in power and when that ran out they ran a deficit budget every year after that. So I do not understand why his government was viewed as fiscally responsible when it never had a budget without a deficit.
Nic919 Truth to power! Good economic stewardship was only their motto, not their practice. In truth they bloated the housing asset bubble and otherwise supported only the oil sector. Canada now has grossly unaffordable housing in its major markets, a looming household debt crisis, and a collapsed oil sector without strength in other part of the economy to shore the country up. Way to go.
Thank you Nic919 and Who ARE these people?
I agree with everything you have said here 🙂
Exactly, Joanne. Trudeau has been walking through open doors so far. Let’s wait to see how he performs on the softwood lumber file, the Keystone CL file (which is not dead, no matter what the Americans think), and the military file. More importantly, let’s see him build relationships with other world leaders, especially whomever ends up in the presidency come November.
That’s what I mean by untested. Let him tackle a problem that can’t be resolved by a selfie or photo op. I say this as a card carrying Liberal for heaven’s sake.
It’s not nice to call names, and Harper was tested and failed.
How is Prairie Girl a troll for not fawning over the PM? She is absolutely correct he is untested and seems to me he is more looking to make friends with POTUS instead of negotiating with him on important trade issues. Things like pipelines and softwood lumber that they admitted they didn’t “have time” to discuss. Our economy is in the toilet but I’m glad they had a nice fancy dinner together.
Pipelines and soft lumber are not the stuff of White House dinners. Don’t you think lower tiers of bureaucrats are working away on these things just as they have been for years? How long have you watched international diplomacy to not notice that world leaders always act like they are besties on official visits and photo ops? How many other state dinners for foreign leaders have you ignored? These things are part and parcel of establishing a good working relationship and demonstrating a firm political alliance on the world stage. Good on them for using their shared platform for even larger planetary interests than soft lumber.
Harper was accused of meddling with the 2008 US election. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/harper-meddling-in-us-primaries-democrats-say/article17988907/
If you’re Canadian, be glad that fences are being mended with the immensely powerful neighbour to the south.
Thanks Sienna. Foreign dinners are photo ops, they’re not working relationships.
Canadian glamour is an oxymoron and I say that with love and affection.
Sort of like American Intelligence? 😉
I kid, I kid!
*sees Trump supporters*
Ummmm…
@Mia4s –
Lol. Your “Ummmm” is appropriate
Gurl ur asking for it!!!!
Ha!
Funny!
😂😂😂😂😂
Michelle Obama is just the classiest lady ever. So gorgeous. I really will miss her next year.
She looks fantastic in that dress with that hair style.
Her hair and makeup look gorgeous here. Very glamorous!
I’ll miss the whole family. The treatment they received from the haters makes me sick. But they always held their heads up, so admirable.
She does look amazing. So classy and intelligent. Dear lord, I don’t want Melania Trump as my First Lady….. I’m going to early vote today! Yay!
I’m just so happy that we’ve had such an intelligent, classy First Family and sick over how the racists have raked them over the coals. The Obamas are just the best!
I can’t even think about the Obama family not being in the White House, it is just so upsetting. The level of class, elegance, intelligence, grace and caring is something we haven’t seen in my 33 years.
Don’t leave me Obama family!!! Don’t leave us!!!
I’ve just discovered Pierre Trudeau – how fantastic was he!? Capes, chapeaux, twirls!
I remembered when his wife at the time (and Justin’s mother), Margaret, partied with the Rolling Stones at Studio 54!
Yeah, I’m old.
Margaret was an embarrassing middle aged groupie. I loved Pierre though. Mais oui Monsieur…
Middle aged! Margaret Trudeau was 28 or 29 when she separated from Pierre Trudeau in 1977.
Margaret Trudeau also struggled for decades with undiagnosed bipolar disorder – and a whole lot of misogyny. Whatever their failings, she and Pierre raised charming, intelligent and socially responsible children. I felt so dreadfully for both of them when their youngest son died; how awful that Michel’s body was never recovered.
As Meggie stated Margaret Trudeau struggled with undiagnosed bipolar and like a lot of folks she “self medicated” for years. She seems to be doing good now that she’s been diagnosed.
And yes the death of Michel in an avalanche seemed to age Pierre overnight and I think he lost the will to live after that. Just tragic.
@Anne Tommy – Margaret Trudeau has been very open about her struggles with bi-polar issues and depression, which started when she was still in her teens. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with her and she is wonderful – as honest and forthcoming a person as you’ll ever meet. Calling her a “middle-aged groupie” is like calling someone with severe dyslexia stupid.
Canadian former- jouno here. I like Justin, I’ve spoken to him on and off the record a bunch of times, he is sweet, his wife is sweet, his kids are sweet. He’s not exactly an intellectual though. Not like, offensively dumb, but not Obama-level smart. Not at all.
Sacha Trudeau though? Smart and Hot. He’s the brother who should have gone into politics.
Heard all those things about him but figured hey, he must have something going on upstairs to have pulled off the electoral upset that he did. He seems to have surrounded himself with competent people and lets them do their thing. If he has any moral compass at all, it’s an improvement.
Harper was no towering intellect, just an ideologically driven schemer. His lips moved but what he had to say was self-serving and nasty. I wonder why it is that controlling people come across as smarter and ‘nice’ people as dumber?
Your question is one which ought to be commonplace, @Who ARE these people?, but our pathetic prejudices are such that it would be considered revolutionary at a typical cocktail party.
Velvet, Crushed great name – thank you! I am going to float through the day fancying myself a revolutionary at a cocktail party.
Not an intellectual giant like GW Bush then…
Oh shit- theres another one? That Canadian fresh air does a body good!!
Ladies (and some gentlemen), Sacha Trudeau:
http://www.speakers.ca/speakers/alexandre-trudeau/
You’re welcome.
Sadly there was a third brother who died in an avalanche in his 20s. All good looking and by all accounts good guys.
Uhm..this is going to sound dumb but how do you determine one’s intellect exactly?
By having diverse conversations about certain topics and seeing how much they know about a topic ? By their wit? By how much they read?
I am so curious
I can’t pretend to explain but I think I get what the original poster means. I don’t think it’s a slight, but an observation that Trudeau is a practical problem solver and not one to philosophize on cultural matters just for the sake of being a “thinker.” I think he’s very action oriented and it motivates what goes on in his head. His thoughts have a practical context.
Sophie has been bringing it. Loved all of her looks so far! I’m not a Michele fan girl. She and Oprah dress a lot alike. But I like her dress for the dinner. Prime minster Justin is hot! Dissapointed with Blake after the MK ensemble she brings this?
Please. Michelle Obama kicked Sophie’s ass stylewise backwards and forwards…
Ladies! Ladies! Is this all about the dresses?
(Oh…guess so.)
Nope not for me!
I’m not a Michelle fan girl but I agree, her dress blows the others out of the water, bathrobes from the 80s included.
Michelle looked sensational.
But admittedly I AM a fan girl.
She almost always looks good, that figure Is sensational…
Yes, she looks absolutely stunning. She has great style, but this is top 10.
Michelle’s style doesn’t resemble Oprah’s at all, IMO. Looking back over this “Michelle Obama’s Best Looks Ever” slideshow, it is really apparent. Especially in formal wear, Oprah tends to be very matronly, and Michelle is a sophisticated risk taker. One of my favorites is the Alexander McQueen she wore to a State Dinner with China.
There are 88 looks in this “best of” slideshow.
http://www.instyle.com/fashion/clothing/michelle-obamas-best-looks-ever
Michelle doesn’t dress like Oprah at all! Not at all.
There is a picture on the WH Instagram with both men holding a baby boy on the lawn. It’s so darn sweet. Gave me hope in a particularly scary election cycle.
Blake is showing way too much skin for a state dinner.
Michelle Obama is my girl crush. I really admire her.
Can we talk about Sasha and Malia’s outfits last night? Such gorgeous young ladies. I would love to see more pics of them.
I saw a picture last night and thought “Who is that pretty woman sitting with Michelle and Malia?” It was Sasha. I still think of her as a little girl and can’t believe how mature she looks now. The Obamas really did a good job of keeping those girls out of the spotlight.
I agree. Gorgeous, lovely girls. I love that their parents didn’t push them to be “celebrity” children.
I agree too, I always forget how grown up they are now, we so rarely see photos of them. I really admire how the family has handled everything thrown at them the past 8 years. Michelle is definitely an inspiration.
I think its pretty tacky of them being teenagers and wearing gowns that cost 20K each. Kendull and Kylie get bashed here for their spending habits but the Obama daughters can wear gowns with that price tag and nobody cares? Hypocritcal much?
I mean… I guess your complaint would be against the parents. They were the ones who decided to buy them expensive dress for their first state dinner. I don’t see the point of bringing Kylie and Kendall into this… There’s so much more wrong with those two than just the amount of money they spend on clothes.
Do US taxpayers cover the cost of clothing for the first family, like the Royals?
ot: does ‘first family’ get capitalized?
If any of us were President and had daughters of an age old enough to attend a formal diplomatic dinner, we would buy them nice frocks, too. What an exciting opportunity for these girls!
Maybe they were loaned for the evening; who knows. The Obamas are not poor so even if they paid full price for the dresses it’s not going to break them.
Did you also worry about the tackiness of the Bush twins using fake ids to get falling down drunk in bars? No, didn’t think so.
It is not tacky to wear a nice gown to a STATE DINNER with the leaders of other countries! If you have to stretch that far to attack teenagers, then there really isn’t much to complain about. There are other things that are um, far tackier.
Not a chance they paid retail price for any of the gowns. Past and present White House staff have talked about how whoever is FLOTUS purchases their own wardrobe, usually at a good discount. Big event gowns are often donated by the designer and then part of the collection. I would imagine those practices extend to the children in this situation.
Pretty sure they can be loaned anything they want. And why not?
@Annie you do realize all Presidents and their families buy their own cloths? Sometimes designers will send them clothing for free but NONE of our tax dollars goes toward their clothing. Get this they even have to buy their own personal food (except for state sponsored dinners, lunches, brk). This is basic civics class knowledge.
Why should anybody care?? Do you want them to show in cheap Walmart outfits? It’s their own money they can spend it however they want.
Agreed they are gorgeous young ladies
And @annie you do know that there’s a difference between dressing for a state dinner and dropping 5 figures because you feel like it that day. They are the First Family of the free world, part of the job is meeting with diplomats at meetings. Most days you see the girls in normal clothes (skirts, dresses) but for functions like these they require fancier outfits. This is a part of their job and when they aren’t in an official capacity none of the first family dresses up. Its not like the POTUS even makes a huge salary so They aren’t dropping large amounts of money on clothes FFS
But did you complain about this problem with the Clinton and the Bush family or…?
I saw some headline bemoaning the loss of grace/class/dignity upon the death of Nancy Reagan and all I could think was about how graceless and classless it was for the Reagan administration to let hundreds of thousands of Americans die terrible deaths without dignity during the first years of the AIDS crisis.
@Alex
POTUS makes 400k a year. Correct if I’m wrong but I don’t think FLOTUS has a salary. Either way, I’m pretty sure those dresses were loaned.
I think the girls looked lovely and appropriate for the occasion. I am going to miss the whole family. Even some conservatives have said the same. David Brooks said he’d miss Obama’s class and scandal free family.
Celebrities for some reason have trouble dressing for serious formal events sometimes. Blake dressed like she was walking the red carpet or had a cameo as the vixen in a poorly styled TV show. One of her misses.
Michelle looks gorgeous and Sophie looks vibrant. I like the photos of politicians enjoying each other’s company. It’s a refreshing change.
It would have been great if CB posted some of the other stars there…they looked a lot more appropriate.
I find Blake a bit meh anyway. don’t get the excitement.
Justin Trudeau is dashing. I like Mrs. Trudeau’s dress color, but the orange beading really doesn’t work very well. It would have looked better if it was the same (or similar) shade as the fabric of the dress.
Canadians are lucky!
Obama was dashing when he was younger too. Still a nice looking man.
Michelle’s dress is everything!!! The color the fit, the print, the weight or the fabric… swoon! And Justin forever! (Not the Bieber!)
Everyone of those pictures is so hot. Those are four gorgeous people. Now, imgine this photo with next year’s president. What happened America?? We used to be cool.
Trudeau & Trump? Trial by fire for Justin.
As an American I’m trying to savor the last of the Obamas and am looking at the Trudeaus with wistful envy. Even our best case scenarios as First Family will be pretty drab.
I feel the opposite. Cannot wait for him to go away and his family!
Why? Truly, why? I am a Canadian and I think the Obamas are wonderful role models, smart and truly classy. I just don’t get the hate some have for them
Obama is a statesman. I won’t forget his administration that’s for sure.
@Annie: It’s clear from your comments that you have a personal vendetta against Obama for unclear reasons and have to resort to attacking his wife and kids for dressing beautifully at a STATE DINNER they are hosting. The Obamas aren’t perfect, no politician is, but lest you forget he inherited a shitload of problems from the last administration and has done his best at dealing with a bad hand. You talk like he’s the devil incarnate and include his wife and daughters in your vitriol. Not a reasonable tone to take at all.
I agree, Luca.
Will miss them for sure and especially when watching the god awful candidates we have running now.
Is there any hope at all that Trump will get eliminated???? I certainly hope so!
I agree, I will miss them. I love having a “young” family in the white house.
Michele looks gorgeous. There has been a real media whirlwind around Trudeau and old Barry. The internet is shipping them like crazy.
Nice!! Obama gone all grey now (happens to everyone in that job I guess) but he’s still a very attractive man. That’s like the two best looking world leaders.
Mrs.Obama looks lovely! Like Spring personifies. Blake Lively WTF?! What, were you in your dressing room and took a Valium and forgot to put on your actual gown? god, how embarassing.
Was Loren Michaels there? Maybe he’s Canadian.
Yes and yes.
Lorne Michaels, yes he was there, and yes he was originally from Canada (SNL producer)
No Pam Anderson? No Justin Beiber? They’re Canadians.
There was a joke about Justin Beiber, does that count?
Yes, it looks like Blake is wearing a robe, but damn, does she ever look fabulous in that robe. (And comfy.)
I don’t find Ryan or Blake attractive and that robe she’s wearing is classless. Sophie wore Canadian designers and they look cheap to me. Too bad because she’s very pretty.
Not everyone is over the moon when it comes to Trudeau esp on the prairies who have been hit the hardest. So much resentment over bringing in thousands of refugees when there are many who are struggling financially and have been for some time. Some of these refugee families have ten twelve children and their parents don’t understand a word of English. The Canadian people will be spending thousands of tax dollars per year feeding educating and supporting them when there are Canadian families who are in dire need as well and get very little in the way of support. A very sad situation all around. Trudeau is still a breath of fresh air from Harper the Clown.
As a 4th-generation Albertan, I find it incredible that so many Conservative supporters seem to forget that it was 40 years of Conservative rule in Alberta that encouraged our over-reliance on oil as a primary driver of the provincial economy. I’ve been through multiple recessions (and have suffered financially), and have watched with intense frustration as our premiers acted as if the petro-dollars would flow forever. I’ve also noticed that so many of those individuals who are now complaining about resources going to refugees seem to forget that the family of every non-indigenous Canadian originates with an immigrant or refugee.
I’m not over-fond of Sophie’s style choices, but I’m very fond of the Trudeaus – and so happy to feel proud of my country again.
Too true Meggie. I am 3rd generation Albertan and while growing up in Edmonton in the 60’s and 70’s…just about everyone came from somewhere else.
And the 40 yr conservative rule…..ugh. I despaired of Albertans ever getting a clue and was happily surprised when Notley won. Though she has a tough row to hoe……many ugly comments flying around about her. Esp from old white men who just can’t believe that a woman and a New Dem at that, is in charge….LOL
Do you have to pay to go to the state dinner or is it invitation only?
Looking at those pictures makes me realize I’m going to miss the Obama’s when they leave office. You can tell from the body language the Obamas and Trodeau’s really like each a lot. Bet they will be friends even after Obama leaves.
Im going to miss michelle as first lady. Wtf is that god awful gaudy plastic looking thing on blakes hand???? Cant hate on her too much though because my lord she looks exhausted, her eyes are showing it. Im guessing james isnt sleeping much.
This was the first State Dinner for a Canadian Prime Minister in 18 years. It will probably be the best Canada/US photo op in many years. I can’t imagine Milania (apologies for spelling) hosting these rumpled kiddos after her comments on only allow Barron into certain rooms in their NY apartment. But I can see Bill having a blast with them.
Bill can work a room, for sure.
The First Couples looked great.
Hated Blake’s dress. Too low cut in the front. Slit too high. She dated herself.
Why no wedding ring on Mr. Obama in the Rose Garden pic??
It is nice to see two straight dude leaders enjoying each other so much!!!
As a proud Canadian I will say that I seem to be in the minority but I love Blake’s dress! Not only do I love the glamorous silver color but I love how it drapes and not only looks comfy but sexy too!! Oh, I think Justin looks pretty hot too… 🙂
Meanwhile “progressive” Hillary Clinton attends Nancy Reagan’s funeral. I was surprised for a second before rembering that they were on the same team.
Hmm. Bet she regrets going now.
Why?
Didn’t you hear?http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-clinton-reagan-aids-critics-20160311-story.html
What does her attendance have to do with anything? She’s a former First Lady paying her respects. I didn’t agree with anything Reagan believed in and cried when he was first elected, but it costs nothing to pay respect to the dead.
Her dying doesn’t change my opinion of her. She and her asshole husband caused a lot of suffering. It was just a blatant attempt on Clinton’s part to poach some moderate republican votes and it has backfired on her big time.
.
“What is Bernie doing to court LGBTI? Medusa shot herself in ithe foot with her comments turd polishing Nancy Reagan’s fictitious support of AIDS victims”
Indeed.
Love Michelle’s dress.
Lively looks like she cut some holes into her bathrobe and slipped it on.
All the Obama ladies looked absolutely stunning.
Does anyone know if cdn taxpayers paid for Maggie & Justin’s in laws to fly down for the dinner? Jessica mulroneys fashion guidance is probably part of the package…
Mr Trudeau has received over the top press coverage usually reserved for saints. He seldom closes his mouth in pictures. His one full -time job before becoming party leader was as a supply teacher, in British Columbia Time will show that he will tax and spend. Save the praise until after we see the budget and the deficit. I (alone it seems) wondered if Sophie had run up her own dress on the plane. I won’t comment on the day dress she wore earlier. The Trudeaus are nothing if not politically expedient. Check out the Hello cover with Sophie and Margaret Trudeau painstakingly posed with their heads framed in white veils similar to the veil worn by Mother Theresa.
