Johnny Depp on Donald Trump: ‘What he is, I believe, is a brat’

I never sat down and watched the Funny or Die spoof “bio-pic” of Donald Trump. Mostly because it was 50 minutes long and who even wants to spend that kind of time making fun of Trump? In that Funny or Die video, Trump was played by Johnny Depp, because if there’s one way to get Depp to do anything, it’s to promise him a fine assortment of wiglets, prosthetic face crap and a ton of makeup. I’m assuming they paid him in booze too. Anyway, as it turns out, Depp did spend some time thinking about his “character” and what really motivates Donald Trump. His explanation is actually pretty accurate, in my opinion.

Last month, Funny or Die dropped a surprise 50-minute spoof biopic of Donald Trump, with Johnny Depp donning the Donald’s toupee and stepping into the lead role. At an event this weekend at Arizona State University, Depp opened up about his portrayal of the presidential candidate, saying that he believes Trump is a “brat.”

“It’s not just about being a rich kid or anything like that,” Depp told the audience. “I approached Donald Trump as what you kind of see in him when you really watch him. There’s a pretense. There’s something created about him in the sense of bullydom. But what he is, I believe, is a brat.”

Depp starred in Funny or Die’s The Art of the Deal alongside Alfred Molina, Robert Morse, Patton Oswalt, Jack McBrayer, Michaela Watkins, Henry Winkler, Stephen Merchant, Kristen Schaal, Andy Richter, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Ron Howard, and Jacob Tremblay. Drunk History creator Jeremy Konner directed the film, and after its release, he told EW that Depp brought his own hair and makeup team to the shoot, and that it took two to four hours of makeup and prosthetics to transform him into Trump.

[From EW]

“There’s something created about him in the sense of bullydom. But what he is, I believe, is a brat.”
I agree. While I do think there’s an aspect to Trump where he seems to be playing a character, or a caricature of Donald Trump-the-Showman, I’ve also come to realize that Trump is really not that bright at all. Maybe he does have a head for business, maybe his media strategy is unintentionally brilliant, but every time he’s questioned on anything substantive, there’s just nothing there. And that’s where the brattiness comes in – he’s like a petulant child stomping his feet and throwing a tantrum whenever something doesn’t go his way.

    Agreed, Johnny!

    • tegteg says:

I think Trump is worse than a brat. A brat is unpleasant, sure, but not necessarily racist, misogynist, etc. Trump is more dangerous than a brat or bully.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Can’t argue with that.

  3. Snowpea says:

I have an Anerican FB friend and she bangs on about the US presidential stuff a lot. She reckons that this idiot Trump is a fake, a plant to make Clinton look great by contrast.

I dunno much about American politics but Trump has so many roos loose in the top paddock he may as well be insane. Could he really become the next president? And does it scare you guys as much as it scares me on the other side of the world?

    • LadyMTL says:

I think all of his roos got loose a long time ago, lol. (Love that expression, BTW. I may have to steal it). I know here in Canadaland lots of us are scratching our heads over this whole mess. FWIW I know a few people who are starting to believe the theory that Trump is a plant.

I personally don’t think that he has a hope in hell of winning a general election, he’s way too offensive and could never win over the population at large – at least, I hope not. The man is basically a showman, all flash and no substance. Can you imagine him at an EU conference, trying to talk to someone like Angela Merkel? The very idea just boggles my mind.

      • Heidi says:

You would be surprised how many Americans here agree with him. Hilary isn’t that much well liked at all. Lots of Bernie supporters have threatened to support Trump in the general election of Hilary gets the Dem nom. I think he does have a very good chance of becoming POTUS.

      • Chinoiserie says:

Trump is essentially an American Berlusconi, a rich controverial populist that was not a part of the normal political establishment when initially. And look how long Berlusconi managed to be succesfull. That does not mean Trump will be, Europe is full of populist politicians that have not had great success. But he has bought populism to US and he could be succesfull.

    • Lucky says:

I read an article speculating that the Clintons may be in a deal with Trump to secure that Hilary will. I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all, but it could be possible. Or maybe I watch too much House of Cards!!!!

    • Lindy79 says:

It’s a VERY dangerous game to play if that’s what is going on, look at all the racial tensions this has stirred up. Its beyond him just saying offensive things, this is becoming violent and I can see it getting worse. Its one thing to play up to the ignorant rich white dude narrative but seeing all the racists and facists coming out of the woodwork, this wont just go away if he loses the election, how would they have thought this was a good idea?

      • Who ARE these people? says:

I agree Lindy79 it’s a dangerous game, but it’s hard to descend to this level of conspiracy thinking. I think he’s a racist in a racist dynasty, and a lot of people turned the other way because of his bluster about business. At which he’s not very good, either.

      • Goo says:

Racist? Not near as racist as Rev. Wright and his followers were during the 2009 election…

    • Sheila says:

Trump was like this long before Bill Clinton was elected, the*first time*. He has always been like this. He might enjoy exaggerating it for the cameras because he wants the attention but I can’t imagine how Clinton would have gotten him to agree to troll the nation for her- did she pay him? Funny cause he definitely has more money than her

Also if any hardcore Bernie Sanders fans would actually hate Clinton so much they’d vote for Trump just so she can’t win then I have serious doubts about their judgement and I would vote for Clinton over Sanders out of principle, because obviously Sanders voters would have lost their minds.

    • Lady Keller says:

My first thought was that Trump was a plant. I didn’t think he could possibly be serious with the crap that came out of his mouth. At first it was kind of funny as a joke. As time goes on I realize that not only is he serious he has a lot of support and a shocking number of Americans agree with his racist, xenophobic, ignorant views.
As a Canadian I am seriously disappointed in our neighbors. And more than a little worried about what happens to our “neighborhood” if the biggest bully on the block gets elected POTUS.

    • John Wayne Lives says:

@snowpea yes it scares all us good-hearted, free thinking Americans, but mostly for myself it has been shocking to see how many racist, bigots, and low-lifes still live and wallow in their stupidity here in America. I honestly thought we were better than this. I have actually had to distance myself from certain Trump enthusiasts in my life because he makes me want to vomit and I really don’t think I can be friends with someone that thinks he’s an amazing person. I think a lot of us have been finding out quite a bit about our friends and neighbors by finding out who supports Trump. I’m not one to let politics or religion infringe upon a good friendship or acquaintance but supporting Donald Trump speak too loudly for me to ignore.

  4. EscapedConvent says:

Trump is a bullying toddler who verbally throws things when he doesn’t get his own way. I say this with an apology to any bullies or toddlers who may be reading this. But we cannot dismiss him as harmless, as I used to do. I didn’t take him seriously because I was positive that American voters would never ever give him the time of day, let alone something so important and deadly serious as a vote. So I overestimated how smart we are, and am now wringing my hands. Astonishingly, the nastier he gets, the better his supporters seem to like him.

I am going to watch Johnny’s Trump video because I love Johnny Depp, and because he suffered through all those hours of makeup and prosthetics, and I figure it’s the least I can do.

  5. SusanneToo says:

    Nailed it!

  6. lucy2 says:

The video was long but entertaining.

“I’ve also come to realize that Trump is really not that bright at all.” But…but…but…he’s got all the best words!

  7. Catwoman says:

I wonder what his immigrant wife thinks about his immigration ideas?

    • Triple Cardinal says:

Melania addressed the immigrant question on TV. She said she was a legal immigrant. She had followed instructions/procedures and arrived in the States legally.

    • Lama Bean says:

She agrees. She argues that she came her e legally (on a work visa as a model) so he’s not talking about her.

    • SJO says:

She doesn’t sound much like she does a lot of thinking.

  8. Laura says:

Depp deserves an Emmy for his outstanding performance in The Art of the Deal.

  9. Heidi says:

Watch out Johnny! Beware of Trump going on psychotic rants over you and call you a loser, wimp, has-been actor etc. This man spares no one.

  10. als says:

So, I understand that Trump is the American version of UK’s Prince William.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Both born to wealth, both bratty, but Trump has provoked an outpouring of racism and xenophobia, which is resulting in political violence, whereas William is simply (and annoyingly) mooching off taxpayer money. Trump as president would have the nuclear football. William will never have that kind of power.

    • tolia says:

Uhh does Prince William throw misogynistic insults at women? Does he go around calling people ugly, stupid, losers if he is criticized like Trump does? Has he been married 3 times like Trump has? Or had multiple failed business?

    • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

Prince William seems to have lots of flaws (lazyness being the biggest one) but racism, xenophobia and bigotry are not on the list, as far as I can see…

  11. AlmondJoy says:

I guess if you really break it down to the simplest of forms, yes he’s a brat. But he’s also so much more.

Soon we’ll be treated to some rage tweeting about Johnny’s movies, I can almost guarantee it!

  12. coconut says:

Trump is likely a narcissist, psychopath and/or sociopath. Google it.

  13. mmm says:

oh you missed it Kaiser!! It was hilarious now i think they moved the video and it’s unavailable. Maybe they want to release it in TV? because it had millions of views in a couple of days and Depp could be easily a candidate for the Emmys
There’s also a video from this event at the University and Johnny, impersonates Trump and makes fun of the “wall” for the delight of the students in attendance

  14. First, let me say I am not for Trump but neither am I for either of the Dem candidates. It’s widely known George Soros backed orgs such as moveon.org, who are also Hillary supporters, as Soros is, are showing up at his rallies to create mayhem. Read about it online. It’s all out there. Soros is backing Hillary. So who is worse for this country. It’s all a big roos.

  15. Ankhel says:

Brat, hm? Depp is someone who’s unapologetic about breaking laws, pretty much abandoned his kids for a thirsty young mistress, doesn’t bother showering or sobering up before work events, and oh, delayed filming for weeks because he couldn’t be bothered to show up. Glass houses…

  16. Danny says:

    Accurate.

  17. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I agree – Drumpf is a brat. Now Johnny looks great in the header pic. Is it an old one?
