Here is the new cover of Vogue Paris, with Cindy Crawford and her daughter as April’s cover subjects. First of all, Cindy Crawford looks great. She just turned 50 years old last month, and I feel like she’s owning that pretty well. Do I think she’s completely free of cosmetic work? No, I do not. She’s been tweaked here and there, and she’s played around with Botox and fillers, I am absolutely sure. I also like that some editions of Vogue are still using 50-year-old models for their covers. That, to me, is a good thing.
But I do have issues. Cindy is posed on the cover with her 14-year-old daughter Kaia Gerber. Kaia is gorgeous, of course, and looks very much like a Mini-Me version of Cindy. Kaia also has her mom’s fantastic brows too, did you see that? Last year, Kaia got signed to the IMG Models agency. Like Kendall Jenner, Willow Smith, Jaden Smith, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid and countless other celebrity kids, Kaia is now a professional model. At the age of 14! While I don’t doubt the fact that Kaia could and will have a great career as a model, it bugs me that 14-year-olds are appearing on Vogue covers. It bugs me that every celeb kid these days is a “model” or a “muse” or a brand ambassador.
I sort of assume that Cindy – who said she was retiring last year – agreed to be on this cover because she wants to ease Kaia into this kind of work and have everything mom-approved at this early stage of her career. Like, Cindy and Kaia were a package deal – Cindy wasn’t about to allow Kaia to do a Vogue cover shoot on her own, and Vogue might not have wanted Cindy to do a stand-alone Vogue cover. Still, it’s a beautiful shot. Mother-daughter goals!

Yeah, I don’t think anyone should be surprised that her kids turned out good-looking. I’m not personally attracted to her husband, but I saw a photo of him from his younger days and he also has good bone structure. It would have been weirder if the kids had turned out ugly.
Yes you can, and it’s awful when it happens. My cousin is one of the most beautiful women I know and her daughter, well, let’s just say she’s not. Her teenage years were very very hard.

I don’t think Jaden looks like that much of a model. He’s groomed in the Hollywood kind of way, but his physique doesn’t look that model-ly to me. And he definitely doesn’t look like he can model FEMALE clothes, which is what he appears to be promoting. Did they give him women’s clothes to model because he wasn’t cutting it in the men’s clothing area? And am I suppose to re-shape my body to have no chest and hips at all to wear the kind of clothes he’s modelling? Say what you will about Kate Moss, but at least she has a chest.
Maybe Willow looks like a model, although I have no idea what her height is.
I do think Kendall looks like a model, which is why her success doesn’t bother me.
The Hadid sisters have more rounded faces, which I think is a little unusual for modelling. They’re attractive but I can kind of see why they’re called out a bit. When I saw Gigi’s face on some kind of make-up ad, I realized that her face/cheeks don’t show off make-up the same way some of those models from the ’90s did.
I definitely don’t think the Beckham kid looks like a model AT ALL.
With Kaia, I just kind of assume she got her mother’s height. I’m guessing she’s tall enough to be a model. And well she did get her mother’s face to some extent. And we all know that that face has been successful at modelling. That particular kind of face is a known quantity in terms of being easily commodified. Which is why her becoming a model seems less weird to me. Conversely, no way does the Beckham kid — the oldest one? — look like any of those male models I see in advertisements. (Yeah, I know I’m strangely vehement about this. But his face doesn’t have the kind of symmetry that Cindy Crawford’s son does. I assume Brooklyn is tall because of his dad’s genetics, but his height doesn’t seem to photograph as well either).
Just to add:
Though to be fair to all of them, modelling is contingent on highly subjective criteria that the fashion industry chooses. So my opinions don’t really matter anyway, since it’s all based on looks and the fashion industry can choose at will what they want to promote looks-wise.
But based on what we’ve seen in the past, Cindy Crawford had a face that people seemed to like. And it seems her daughter inherited some of her genetics. Thus, her being a model makes sense when I view her though that lens of being Cindy Crawford’s younger doppel-ganger. If the fashion industry can’t have young Cindy anymore, I figure they’re thinking “Let’s get her daughter as a substitute.”
She’s gorgeous yet is too short for modeling in the typical sense.
I have to admit, I was wondering about her height. I guess I had assumed she had grown to be as tall as her mother if she’s being allowed to model. The fashion industry usually seems strict about the height thing.

The androgynous waif look has been pretty hot for a while now especially amongst young male models. We are not talking older male models like David Gandy and Gabriel Aubry but the more edgy teen/early 20s market. Jaden has the androgynous delicate vibe i think he would have got signed even if he wasn’t will smiths son, but of course he wouldn’t have gotten so much attention. Thats the thing theres probably plenty of models as attractive as Gigi or Jaden, but due to their fame and connection they get propelled up the ladder so quickly. Thats nepotism for you.
@perplexed She has the face but her height is an issue. I know what you mean about the Hadids. I think they are all attractive but some not proportional to their hype.
@Almond Joy I think there is something charming about the Beckham boy. He just seems happy all the time. I think he would make a good actor if he has the talent and glad to see he didn’t try soccer.

Yeah I looked at the Jaden Smith photos in his section, and you’re right he does look like a model in that editorial. I suspect a lot of criticism is directed at Jaden for getting the chance to model women’s clothes (or women’s products). If he starts modelling men’s clothes on a full-time basis, I think the criticism will be less. He definitely does get more attention than the average male model though, since modelling is the one industry where women dominate in terms of fame. So that’s another area where nepotism does benefit him greatly (though, when it really comes down to it, I guess I don’t care either way if he benefits since modelling is one of those areas that’s sort of hard to pinpoint as to why or how someone becomes successful in it. I can more easily pinpoint bad acting or bad singing — it’s harder for me to pinpoint bad or good modelling, other than I know that the industry expects you to be tall).

Nepotism is nothing new. Look at old Hollywood. The Barrymore family goes back a century. Liza Minnelli’s mother is Judy Garland. George Clooney had Rosemary Clooney as an aunt. Seriously, since acting began. And until the earth burns up. However it’s just another career.
There are military families. Artist families. My family is a teacher family. Everyone’s a teacher, and raises teachers.

When I find myself irritated by nepotism I just remind myself that if I had any useful nepotastic connections for my own career, I would probably take advantage of them in some way too. I think the vast majority of people would. And I don’t really think there’s any wrong with that unless the person in question isn’t qualified or talented enough for the gig, and they take the place of someone who is.

I was going to comment on the child’s makeup. She is certainly a beautiful girl, but she wears far too much makeup and it makes her look years older than she is. I do like her au natural eyebrows, though.

But I looked up Randee and I don’t think this girl looks like him at all- I actually do think she looks way more like Cindy, especially early, model-days Cindy.

As for the height thing-she’s 14! She’s still growing! Who knows how tall she will end up being. I didn’t stop growing until 19, so who’s to say she won’t become tall enough for modeling?
And last but not least: Brooke Shields. She was younger than Kaia when she became famous as both an actress and a model. She seemed to turn out well enough. As long as Kaia has her mother watching over her I don’t see an issue with it.

I know she is only 14 and maybe it will come, but Cindy had this something that made you look twice and seemed unobtainable. They both look like they have rolled in some dirt in the cover photo. The candid photo shows her to very pretty. And I agree that she looks like her dad.
A lot of models are actually very young (not sure if that wasn’t known before) the idea being that if you need to age them up (clothes, makeup, etc) it’s easier than aging them down. Same with not needing as much photo manipulation and editing for someone who’s already young, thin, etc.
I think a lot of people would be surprised by the age of the models they see in random advertisements.
As for Kaia she’s gorgeous and yes she did inherit the brows, sigh, lucky duck.
Yep. A long time ago a friend was signed to the Ford agency when she was 14. Sure, she was an addict by 17, but it was fascinating to watch how the magazines would use this young child in very mature campaigns. The amount of deception was eye opening.
I’m very cynical of the modelling industry but I can appreciate that Cindy is keeping close tabs on her daughter. I hope she never gets complacent. Since this coincides with her “retirement” it looks like Cindy is going to become a backstage mom for both her kids as they get their modelling careers started. Smart, but I hope the modelling is woven into their lives and doesn’t become their lives.
I was actually surprised that people hardly remember Brooke Shields started quite young, and appeared on the cover of Vogue at the age of 14 too — and that was back in 1980.

she’s never had any awkward years. as a baby or as a teen. i’m not sure Cindy had any awkward years until she started messing with her face.
I think these parents have enough money to make sure none of their kids have awkward years. A lot of awkwardness in kids comes down to styling. And when your mom is a model, chances are she’s going to coach you on style.
Is she tall enough to be a model? I’m seriously curious because she looks short in all her pictures. Celebrity kids always go the model route now, I think her oldest son is also a model can’t remember his name.

As for Cindy, who I hung out with in the airport lounge once, she still looks amazing but, she’s kinda like a Monet. You get up close & in person and it tells a different story. I’ve mentioned this before, but in person, all the work on her face really shows. She’s got shades of L.A. cat face.

Her daughter is cute, but unremarkable, and from pictures I’ve seen nowhere near tall enough to be a model. If she wasn’t Cindy’s daughter she wouldn’t be a model. I think they probably didn’t want her without Cindy, not the other way around. I also don’t see any similarity between them, apart from darker colouring.
I never found Cindy beautiful either. Attractive, yes, but not beautiful. From the 90s supermodels only Naomi and Kate Moss were truly beautiful.
I think Kaia is very pretty, but I think Cindy is pushing a bit too hard to make her happen. They are always photographed TOGETHER. My impression is the strength of Kaia’s appeal, and the foundation for her potential career, would be that she is Cindy Crawford’s daughter and bears a passing resemblance to her mother (I see quite a bit of Randy in her, too). It feels a bit forced to me.
Naomi, Kate and Christy were the three most gorgeous of the 90s supermodels imo.
But even if the others weren’t “pretty”, they certainly were striking – a Kendall Jenner type would have been chewed up and spat out by just being in the same frame as them.
I don’t think Cindy is the most striking, but I do think she has a certain Amazonian quality to her, and can see why she was a successful model in that regard.
I think what worked with the ’90s models is that they all fit a different kind of type. I suppose Cindy would have fit into the all-American category.. I don’t know if today’s models have unique qualities that you can distinguish them by. With Cindy, Kate, Linda, Christy, etc. you could easily pinpoint which one was which.

I really wonder about the impact on a person, to begin that sort of life at such a young age. I think, for many of us, there is a knee-jerk reaction against it, assuming it’s a bad thing. That’s not necessarily true, I guess, but still, it is a very specific sort of life…I just wonder if, after modeling from such a young age for, one assumes, a long time, she will be able to make other choices in life, if she wants to.
It just seems kind of limiting to me, but then again, I never wanted (or had the potential) to be a model. I guess that’s a career where you have to start really early, and there’s so much competition that having a famous mom is one of the few ways to get in.

All the models and former models do nothing but say how the life of a model is hard, grueling, humiliating, dangerous and alienating and yet they all push their kids in front of a camera.
Why can’t celebrities invest in their children’s education and give them a chance to a longer lasting job?
Just because you have money now doesn’t mean your kids will be able to afford the same lifestyle or stay wealthy. Some of those kids are just good at spending their parents’ money. At some point they will have to learn their living and 99% percent of the celebrity kids would be working at Walmart if it wasn’t for their rich parents.
I would love to be shocked one day to read, ‘Celebrity off-spring pursues PHD and private life! No news at 11!’

Cindy and Rande’s kids are gorgeous. And unlike a lot of celebrity offspring who are getting plum modeling jobs because of who they are (I’m looking at you Kendall Jenner), I think Kaia would have made it as a model regardless of whether she had celebrity parents and a large social media following.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but compared to Kaia, Kendall Jenner seems like a decent model to me.
If Kendall Jenner were just Jane Doe from Oklahoma, she would not be representing major couture lines and getting cosmetic endorsements. Both of Kaia’s parents were successful models. She has the genetics to rise through the ranks of models to be at the top.
I have seen girls here in the Nashville area that are just as tall and slim as Kendall Jenner, who are far prettier and have great personalities. Kendall Jenner has those jobs because of her family.
This is just my opinion, but I just don’t see it with Kaia. She is cute, but that’s it. I see 10 girls who look like her every time I go to the mall. Kendall is as bland as they come, but at least she’s tall enough, They’re pretty much the same.

Kendall is the one I struggle with the most because of her gigs she lands not because of her family. I try to see it and I don’t and have been around models and the fashion world in New York. Not seeing it beyond an average working model but her eyes are so vacant.
She’s lovely, and I know it’s typical of the industry, but it’s sad to me that a “model” woman is actually a child. No wonder we have issues about aging.
I tend to agree with you. It’s a little depressing to see these really young ladies in clothes that you would normally see a mature woman wearing. I wish there were more older women on the runways and on the advertising because I’d rather see someone closer to my age wearing the clothes meant for them.
I’ve been told, more than once, a woman should commit suicide after age 40 because society throws away women after age 40.
She’s is pretty but the her son is better looking. Her daughter looks like Rachel bilson. Cindy’s got it all, rich attractive husband beautiful healthy children, money, stability. She made a good life herself all through modelling. This is why they push their kids into the same industry they know that’s where the money, fame and more importantly the connections are at. You rub elbows with the elites. You marry into them and you become them.
I don’t think that constitutes “it all” actually.
What could you add? Happiness? Contentment? Peace within herself? All things we can’t see or verify. She seems to be happy and content.

Her daughter is stunning. I do think they are going about her modelling career all wrong. She should distance herself from her mother when it comes to modelling or else she will be constantly compared to her. Also, people will say the usual “she became a model because her mom’s famous and has connections”…which may be true, but this girl has everything it takes to be a model. She should be more organic about it and not constantly do shoots with her mom. This isn’t her first one.
She doesn’t have the one thing that’s usually the most important for models – height. She might grow, but she’s 14, I doubt she’ll have a 10 cm growth spur one of a sudden.

I’m female and I didn’t stop growing until 19. I am pretty sure you have it backwards, Magnoliarose. My brother reached 6 feet tall at about 15 and stopped growing then.
Estrogen stimulate the closure of the epiphyseal plates, so I’m pretty sure girls stop growing sooner than boys.
The daughter is pretty, but bland, and she’s still a kid. Cindy seems to push too much here. I find her son to be far more attractive, ‘edgier’. Cindy starts looking strange, however, she’s got sort of cat’s eyes. I’m not really into models, but from this period my favorite was Tatjana Patitz. I always thought she had more to offer than just a pretty face, and a sensational body.

My g-daughter is actually 6′, but puts 5’11” on her portfolio. They don’t want extreme height anymore. 5’10 is preferred.
When I look at Cindy Crawford of today, all I can see is Caitlyn Jenner. They look so alike! But then, I didn’t find Cindy to be strikingly beautiful even at her peak modeling years, just a blandly pretty woman. To me she was always by far the least extraordinary of the 90’s supermodels. A friend of mine has been w DNA agency since 16–which I think is still very young. 14 is really too young, imo, and the daughter is getting her entry into modeling through sheer nepotism.

No, Kaiser, I think you’ve got it the wrong way around – there is no way Vogue Paris would care to put Kaia on that cover without her iconic and still big-name model mum right there with her. Like, Cindy may be 50 but Vogue Paris has never been particularly shy of putting older women on its covers.

Cindy has been trying to push her daughter since she was 12 or 13 into modeling, but she got a lot of backlash and backed off. I just don’t get why she wants her daughter to get into modeling so young. It just encourages eating disorders and obsession with looks and so young maturitywise to be dealing with rejection. Why not let her be a kid in high school? Even if she wants to encourage her, it should be after high school.
