Yay!!! There was a big premiere in LA last night for I Saw the Light, the Hank Williams bio-pic starring Tom Hiddleston. And thankfully, Tom was there, looking lovely. Tom’s costar and rumored real-life girlfriend Elizabeth Olsen was in attendance as well, and they even posed together on the red carpet. It’s an Easter miracle!
Tom wore one of his favorite blue Alexander McQueen suits (I swear we’ve seen it several times before), and Elizabeth Olsen wore a sort of boho Emilio Pucci gown. I’m okay with the gown, but her hair is too beautiful to do a center part, just my opinion. I’m also including photos of Maddie Hasson, another costar. And LEGS, obviously. I’m including photos of the legs. But you do you need some posh Dragonfly voice and lovely hands? Of course you do. Hiddles appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. Some clips!
Here’s the first clip, Hiddles talks about feeling the Bern, American politics, James Bond.
Here’s Hiddles talking about the movie, playing Hank Williams and American heroes. Also: Hiddles yodels!
This is possibly Tom’s best chat show appearance. He’s still got the heart of a dancing, singing performing bear and you can tell he still gets a little overstimulated when someone is talking to him, but he’s doing a good job of keeping it together. Well done, Hiddles!
Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.
Overstimulated. Word of the day! I do love you, Kaiser.
I know it’s heresy but I can’t be arsed to watch the videos. If you say he did good, I’m going to be nice about poor old LEGS today and take your word for it. Only because you said overstimulated, mind.
The whole show was a bit overstimulated. He came on after Bernie Sanders, who (and I do love Bernie) always seems to be shouting. Kimmel is not the best at time management, wasting far too much time on skits and whatever for the first half hour, then crams multiple interviews and a musical performance into the last 30 minutes. Bernie had the longer segment, which was right – he is running for president and he did win some primary/caucuses last night. Tom had just a bit more than five minutes and they talked fast to cover quite a bit of ground in that five minutes. Politics, The Night Manager, Bond, Hank Williams, Holly Williams, and yodeling, which was done within the context of a song.
Fine line for chat shows – entertaining or just downright manic. Even I wouldn’t slate LEGS in that context. Yodelling sounds like catnip to a Sixer, however, I must say. I will avoid all things yodel!
Sixer, for once there was nothing to make you cringe in the interview, believe me.
NO! We need you to watch them this time, Sixer!
Just for you, TB, I watched the first one. Even before I washed off the gardening mud. I have never heard anyone in the pub talking about who should play the next 007. This is a media click bait conversation not a pub conversation.
That aside, cos what else could he say really, LEGS did not say anything that outright annoyed me!
Will that do you?! I am NOT watching yodelling. Not unless you pay me big.
I thought that the way he responded to the 007 question made it pretty clear he DOESN’T want the job. Good on ya, Tommy.
Awww, Sixer. I’m disappointed you won’t watch the yodeling. I can tell you it probably isn’t at all like you expect. And my elderly relatives who grew up with Hank Sr’s music and actually saw him perform live were really rather impressed. Our house will evidently be getting the Blu-ray.
But since I certainly don’t have the serious funds it would require, guess we will all just have to live without Sixer’s review of the yodel.
Sadly.
😉
Bloody Nora. Now I feel bad. I’ve watched it. You owe me.
It’s not cringe factor. I concede! Chalk this up as a victory, TB. You deserve one from me after all this time!
Sixer – That does it, I’m stocking up on toilet paper and canned goods. You conceding LEGS wasn’t cringe-y, even for just the briefest of moments, is a sure a sign of the apocalypse. Or is it a Tompacalypse?.
I will cherish this moment forever, Sixer.
FOREVAH I TELL YOU!!!
I would like it noted that I was also nice about him weeping during the first episode of TNM. Jus’ sayin’!
I can’t be bothered to actually watch the videos, but if he supports Bernie, I am pleased.
Sixer, the seated Kimmel right thigh encased in blue was pure Stem P0rn. You really ought to watch for that. He was secretly promoting LEGS, just for you, methinks.
That’s the Commando Cannes suit if I’m not mistaken. Tight in just the right places.
Maybe later! I’ve done my work but I have a shedload of polytunneling to do in the allotment and sitting talking to you won’t get it done!
I watched The A Word. Reserving judgement but will carry on watching. Hopefully, even if flawed, it will ignite a good conversation.
I totally forgot about the A word… got caught up doing our taxes!
I enjoyed the first episode of D-83, despite having to endure the over synthesized music of my childhood.
D-83 is SO GOOD. I binge watched and was crushed cos it had to end!
Well, now that my flight is cancelled, I guess I can binge watch it too. I’ve already lost interest in the A word whilst packing. Let me know if it gets better and maybe I’ll try watching it again. I want to see the documentary first.
They look cute together but her dress is so unflattering.
I just don’t understand her style. She chooses the most ill-fitting, unflattering garments. This one actually makes the most sense out of just about anything I’ve seen her wear in the past six months. On the other hand, it is nice to see an actress skip the overly revealing, see-through, naked dress trend that others have followed. But still, she’s a pretty woman and there has to be something in between frumpy and naked.
At least the mumu Lizzy wore had color. She would have looked dreadful if it has been her trademark black.
Her hair and makeup looked good. I liked Maddie’s look from the neck up as well.
But Lilac, am I seeing things or am I really seeing her bra? Through the dress? She has so lovely legs, awesome hair, a wonderful smile and still manages to wear horrible dresses…. Don’t understand her style at all.
@Guest, oh good God, yes! That is her bra. Does this woman not own a mirror?
In one of the press photos on another site you can see a tear in the dress – I thought for a minute it might be a shirt/skirt combo and the top was coming untucked, but I do think it actually is torn. To echo my comment from last night – why Lizzie why?
I’m going to update my earlier comment, the red Pucci dress is backless – sort of. So the “tear” I was seeing is actually where the top ends. The cape covers the back too, so unless the person wearing it is super-tall (Lizzie is not), all you see is cape.
Dara, you’re right. I saw a snap of it on a model and there’s a big gaping hole in the back O, lordy.
https://twitter.com/TheFashionCourt/status/712517262268305409
As far as Lizzy’s bra showing through her dress, she seems to find a way to highlight her lovely bosom in some fashion, usually with plunging necklines.
In her defense (and I hate to defend that dress because yikes), it may be that the dress was opaque in person, but her bra was visible in photos due to the lights/flashes.
You can totally see her bra. I didn’t notice until you said. Maybe ennui is right and it’s the flash? I hope?
I completely agree. But, my God, they are both SO adorable.
Really cute couple.
@ Guest – You are really seeing her bra through the dress.
It’s a preggers dress. Watch this space for future reports…
How did the dress get pregnant?
She’s up the duff with Hawkeye’s baby???
Well, that did occur to me, but I didn’t want to say…
TH’s sexual charisma is powerful enough to impregnate inanimate objects. Just ask Tumblr.
A preggars dress like the black one she wore at TIFF 7 months ago? She’s been visibly pregnant to some people for a long time now. The kid will be huge when she finally delivers it.
He was charming. I liked him at Kimmel. As for his suit: my favorite one. Finally Olsen wore something colored. And yes, I gotta admit that they looked lovely together. He even made a bit fun of her when she posed for the press. They seemed very very relaxed. But then she started to talk and I had to hear that voice. Over….
Is he touching her butt in the second smaller pictures? His arm is lower down compared to when he was with Maddie
He tweeted a picture of him and Bernie backstage and my life is now complete.
That picture was adorable.
They make a nice couple, I guess.
Tom and Bernie? They really do!
Tee hee but isn’t Bernie a bit old for him?
No Hidds is dating King King because apparently he likes to get it on with co-stars.
Well spidey since Tom is aging at the speed of light maybe by the time the elections are over their love will have a chance. 😉
Oh Cranberry that was cruel.
I know spidey. I’m only playing Tom, love me.
I’d like to overstimulate Hiddles, if you know what I mean. (wink wink wink wink wink wink)
I think the suit is Ralph Lauren, not McQueen.
Also: thanks, Kaiser, for baiting all of us with another veiled reference to the “are they/aren’t they” dramatics with Olsen (who has lovely hair, a beautiful face, and horrid taste in clothes).
(And what in the GD hell is Maddie Hasson [sp?] wearing??!!)
Maddie is wearing a vintage bedspread that once belonged to Billie Jean Horton
LOL @ vintage bedspread.
Thanks, Lilac.
Maddie’s dress looks like the kind of dress that it takes a few tries to your head and arms in the right holes. Lizzie dress says ‘don’t touch me’. I pointed these photos out to a 16 year old girl I know and said this is why it is hard for you to find dresses for your events, these ladies have access to designers and stylists and this is how they turn out.
They don’t look coupled up to me. He arrived early and showed more affection for others. She had some shots where it looked like she was pouting.
Click. Bait.
@madly
^This.
they cherry picked the photos to use for this and a lot of the sheep are falling for it. Discernment people. He has more chemistry with Rodney than he does with her.
madly, surely focusing on the pictures of her pouting is also cherry picking? photos only show a split second of an event and people can look miserable, drunk, elated, angry depending on what their face is doing at that split second.
There’s actually video of the red carpet which shows them messing around with the poses and laughing, clearly happy in each others’ company. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re definitively dating – celebitchy is baiting for clicks based on a possibility and people getting um, passionate about it – but suggesting they have no chemistry and she’s just pouty and what, miserable? childish? isn’t true.
(he arrived early because he came straight from the Kimmel taping. I wasnt aware couples had to turn up together for everything to prove they’re together. Again, I have no opinion of their relationship status, but you’re speaking in very black and white, not true to real life ways imo)
Nice try at a rebuttal, but you clearly missed the point of my statement which is that this site just chose to focus on an angle and that was my point. I wasn’t cherry picking anything other than to say that there are other signs that they weren’t sugary sweet on the carpet like they were trying to sell. Kindly don’t put words in my mouth.
And if you want to add a greater context, I would add that he plays with everyone on the carpet, men and women, as the is his MO. And he showed more affection to the other ugly-dressed costar.
Still had more chemistry with JC though.
Ta.
Tommy kept his inner puppy in check and did a good job last night. Kimmel is rather dull and boring for a late night host, so Tom didn’t have a Graham Norton type winding him up. That probably ensured that a calmer, more relaxed Hiddles would be on display.
Tom was great in the interview-calm and collected but I did miss some of his humour
yes Norton can go over the top especially when he has big American stars on board. There have been a few good shows recently with that I had taped – but he can be patchy and he needs to re gig his format.Helen Mirran was hilarious when she was on and the new guy from Star Wars.
Nortons management of the interview with Tom was terrible-I was really interested in what Brannagh and Tom might say by setting Tom up to do the impersonations .The only interesting moments were when Tom was chatting about Heat with DeNiro
it;s a new blue suit, very pristine and i love him in blue he really carries it off. I like seeing him modern suit, not the double breasted bank affairs. There he looks trendy.
And, Ralph Lauren have given him a new bomber jacket too, he’s getting new clothes!!! at long last.
Sorry p’enny but I prefer him in darker suits.
And hi there again.
Me too spidey. I like him in the sleek, form fitting black suits. Not the tuxes he’s warn to the formal events like the BAFTA Awards but like sexy piece of perfection he wore at the Times Talks Madrid.
https://youtu.be/zwSZEifT5Uw?list=PLNIeNAqMzzQ17FZytyE_2I_bXnWd638YK
I think darker colors and hair suit him better because it gives him more definition.
I think the TTM suit was actually party of any evening outfit – can you see the satin round the edges? But I actually do like to see him in a dinner jacket. Very suave to me.
They both look cute, but feck me if they don’t also look like Mr Burns taking Voldemort out for the evening.
This comment wins all comments. Ever.
Ha! I can see that.
Yodel. You had me at yodel.
These two look so cute together!
Cute like human Easter bunnies.
So the general consensus is that they’re a couple now? He behaved just like he does around other co-stars.
Time would tell if they’re really dating after the premier and media promotion
There isn’t a consensus but pointing out that it is all just speculation usually results in hollering. It is often best to avoid the fray.
I’m grabbing my popcorn then. I don’t like how some people make certain statements in a iffy area.
Yeah, there’s no certainty but I’m quite alarmed by how some people are so against the notion that they’re denying Tom and Elizabeth even have a good relationship or like each other (working, friends, on red carpets) or so determined to ‘catch them out’ that they’ll stalk social media and harrass third parties (Jordan Vogt-Roberts) over it. There’s a really uncomfy hostility towards Elizabeth in some areas as well.
My feeling is, well, it’s not really my place to shove my opinion in. If they’re together they’ll probably let the public know when they feel ready to. If they’re not together then… they can just carry on as they were. It’s all good.
They have no reason to promote the “idea” of them as an off-screen couple anymore, whether they ever were or not. They’re probably just glad to get all the premier and junket over with. It’s gotta be hard promoting a film that’s been slammed by critics the way ISTL has, despite the praise they’ve had for their performances.
I do think they had a “thing” at one time, but aren’t anything more than FWBs, if that.
Nut balls, I agree they’re probably happy to reach the end of the promotion. I feel bad for both of them and the director to be honest. He seems incredibly passionate about Hank Williams but his writing or directing just didn’t make the cut. It must be hard to show your passion and get trashed for it, even if it’s ‘deserved’ criticism. I know a lot of fans are angry at him but I can’t help feel sorry for him lol.
As for Tom and Elizabeth, I’m just making no assumptioms to be honest. It’s more likely that they’re not dating, but at the same time *if* they ever came out and confirmed they were, I wouldn’t be the kind of person to go back through the timeline and claim they can’t be because they weren’t visiting each other in certain countries or didn’t spend X day together. I’m very aware that every relationship is different and especially so when you’re actors working on opposite sides of the world, with schedules and commitments that the public don’t necessarily know the ins and outs of. I read that David Harewood didn’t see his children for about three or four months because he was working in the US and they were assumedly in the UK at school. That’s got to be tough.
Of course, all of what I just said is mostly my (silly) need to pre-emptively not judge a possible relationship based on arbitrary expectations of when and where they ‘should’ be spending time (it’s a kind of gut reaction because I see so much weird hate, simplification of scenarios, and cyber-monitoring of couples to ‘prove’ or ‘disprove’ relationships these days). The actual, simpler explanation is as you said, they’re more likely not dating. But *shrugs* I’m just on the side of letting them be whatever they want to be.
I hope that makes sense. Not trying to step on anyone’s toe! I’m just taking a middleground stance with no judgement either way 🙂
God, that was an essay. Sorry guys. I think I’m the celebitchy version of the ‘I wish we could all get along’ kid in Mean Girls. Shall try to reign in my wordiness in future (it basically boils down to ‘I don’t know and I’m not judging’ anyway lol).
My feeling is that they did have some sort of “thing”, and maybe still do. I think they enjoy each other’s company, but the reality is they are hardly ever in the same city/country so probably kept it casual and non-committed. It will be interesting to see if they get together again after ISTL is history.
@N – I get what you are saying about expectations and timelines, and I know you can’t judge how committed a couple is by how much time they spend (or don’t spend) together, and I especially think missing a birthday or romantic holiday has absolutely no bearing on a relationship status.
But there’s also a chicken/egg aspect to this. In my mind, you can’t get serious about someone until you spend significant time together, but until you are serious about someone you don’t really change your life around to make that time. So which comes first?
p.s. I’m starting to have a lot of empathy for Marc Abraham too. It has to be so tough to put your soul into something and have people crap all over it. ISTL was obviously a passion-project for him.
@N, essays are welcome. No need to apologize.
BTW, according to EOnline, last night, Olsen again denied any relationship beyond friends and co-workers.
I thought it was pretty obvious when both of them had birthdays within a week of each other and valentines in between and didn’t spend any of it together after supposedly being together for a year that they probably weren’t really a couple. She spent the week with friends. I think they had a little fun and moved on. He didn’t spend any more time with her than anyone else last night. They joked around a little but they looked like a couple of friends who haven’t seen each other in a while joking around.
and here I thought she was pregnant but I guess it was just the dress
Let us not forget the raspberry colored socks. They were FAB.
Is there a Twitter account dedicated to them socks yet?
Didn’t Lainey have a blind about them yesterday? I didn’t quite understand it all
I think that blind was about Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch (sweetheart who loves home in more ways than one = Rachel lives in Toronto because she loves her home country and she was also supposedly dating another Canadian, Taylor).
Just this once because I’m a big kid and I can’t help it when I see her,
“Tooooooommmmmm”
Please tell me she did that again. It was so funny and Date Night © was the best and funniest thing Lizzie has done in ages. Lol
If there ever was (and I repeat if) any Light then I think that my have been the time it went off for Tom.
That Pap Walk was so funny. But nothing will ever beat Jarthy and her smirk saying: still here B#####….. Olsen comes straight after that with that ridiculous behavior….
No one will upstage the JArthy. She reigns supreme with that smug smile (“Still doin’ yer man, b*tches!”) standing next to Tom wearing his “Oh shit” look.
Olsen just looked ridiculous the way she behaved on the pap walk. Notice that she’s never done anything like that before or since. It was a performance for one night only.
And then she wasn’t. I’m not so sure she was trolling. I think she miscalculated, and Bora Bora was her farewell present. I also think Sian was another FWB.
As for Lizzie’s “Tom, where are you?”, I won’t ever be able to scrub his “Over here, babe” out of my brain. I HATE the word “babe”. It just sounds so… condescending and iffy to me. Not even Hiddles can make it sound not douchey.
I’m joining in on the heresy, but I thought the interview fell flat, to say the least. TH seemed strained, uncomfortable and even a bit annoyed, perhaps because of jet lag, nerves, bad reviews, et al. Who knows. I could not believe Kimmel brought up the Williams family’s reaction to the film seemingly without any knowledge of Hank III’s continued diatribes against it.
I am a huge fan of TH’s acting but not so much his singing voice. I cannot believe I am actually saying this, but the yodeling was the highlight of the interview by a LOT.
I’ll admit that Tom didn’t seem thrilled to be there, but Kimmel is such a bad late night host and interviewer that Tom may have been as bored as the rest of us.
HANK 3 was the only family member who criticised it and he admits he did not even watch the film.He has a reputation for being a bit of a jerk. Interestingly Hank 3 has decided to bring out a traditional country album so he will make something out of it.
-Sad about the reviews of the script and direction but generally Tom’s reviews have been excellent.
I have the CD of the film track songs arriving tomorrow.I have no problems with his singing but agree therre is nothing distinctive about his voice
I am pretty sure now we will not get a a UK release but keeping my fingers crossed
icerose, I thought I had seen a May 6th release date for the UK announced not too long ago.
I’m in LA and ISTL is only showing in two theatres here, so not a big release in any way. I think Only Lovers Left Alive had at least twice as many theaters for its release. Sad.
Watching the Periscope, he showed more affection to the little blonde guy that plays in his on-screen band then he did to EO. Of course, now that will start a whole new series of rumours ( and the most affection he EVER showed on a red carpet was to a horse, y’know.)
I think the most affection he ever showed was to Chris Hemsworth (and that’s not a suggestion that he’s gay).
I am late to the Hiddles party, so apologies if I sound silly, but has Tom ever confirmed a female partner? I love him dearly and I get a bit of a gay/bi vibe from him. Am I the only one?
Eons ago (in fandom years, where one week equals one year in real-people time) he was with Susanna Fielding (a British actress) they attended a few events together and he spoke about their relationship in interviews. Since then, no confirmation of anything – but there have been a few rumors of certain lady friends – Olsen among them.
A lot of people say they get gay/bi vibes from Tom. I personally don’t see it. He’s done enough ogling of female interviewers when he thought no one was looking to hint that he enjoys girls, a lot. Plus, and I’m reaching way back into Hiddles ancient history here, but before he was famous and was just a struggling actor in London, he had a MySpace account where he listed his orientation as Straight. If you are a (probably horny) twenty-something stage actor looking for action, there’s no reason to fib about that particular detail, so I’m going to take his word for it.
My favorite comment on the subject is from our resident British expat, T.Fanty:
“He’s not gay, just really, really English.”
Or perhaps really, really Posh.
Nutty, I was going to use that quote but I couldn’t remember who said/typed it. I should have known it was Fanty…
The word I use for this is effete.
I don’t usually go for speculating on sexuality but since I’m a Brit and understand the demeanour of posh Brits – he comes over as plenty plenty straight to me.
Posh Brits come in two types: effete (LEGS) and Hooray Henry (our current Prime Minister). And for some reason, effete seems to be biscuit-bait for many Americans! Why do you like this, ladies? Tell me! I need to understand the attraction!
He was also confirmed to be dating Kat Dennings. I’ll never forget because she was literally all over him every chance she got.
Sixer, because he’s not like our men.
“And for some reason, effete seems to be biscuit-bait for many Americans!”
I would say most of the current crop of super-posh actors fall into that category – Hiddleston, Cumberbatch, Redmayne. Damian Lewis is more blokish and not so obviously posh, so I’d probably put him more into the ”Hooray Henry” category.
And yeah, I don’t get gay vibes from LEGS either. Not in the least.
Ethelreda – yes, I’m not just talking about LEGS. That effete posh type seems to be an American biscuit magnet whereas they are more likely to just get laughed at this side of the Pond.
Nutballs – don’t you have any soppy, weedy posh types then? If that’s the case, then I kinda get it.
Sixer, not in my general vicinity.
For me, I think it’s the accent, the genteel and all-around good manners coupled with a bizarre attraction to men that conduct themselves in a more uptight manner that makes me want to go bizerk on them and shake ’em loose a bit. Does that make any sense??
I’m quite the opposite to Hiddles — athletic, foul-mouthed, occasionally bad mannered (like drinking milk straight from the jug) and swagger and sashay down the sidewalk like I own the goddamn place. I can’t explain it, but men who strike me as having a stick up their ass draw me in like a fly to manure. Perhaps it’s the joy of springing my personality on them and watching their reaction or the hope that underneath all that controlled manner, there’s a raging, vigorous beast just waiting to bust out of the cage.
Perhaps that’s too much analysis in response to your question… oy vey.
Well, I can sympathise with that. I’d get it on with LEGS but, as you know, only with the ball gag on so that I didn’t have to talk to him, too. This may be more a reflection of me than him!
I’ll just leave you to investigate the term “chinless wonder”. And you’ll see why the effete posh type doesn’t scream virility to as large a proportion of British gals!
Well, that didn’t take long, thanks to Google. Our attraction to posh men is probably like your attraction to the southern drawl which I don’t find particularly attractive.
BALL GAGS: I’ve said this before, when it comes to shutting up the PuddleTom, there are better and more satisfying ways of doing it, such as covering his face and giving his mouth something else to do. You can keep your fantasy… mine is betterererer!
Sixer where do men from private(public) Quaker /Steiner and other schools that are more religious or ethos based fit into your generalisations re public schools.I must admit having been to several types of public schools and even married a public school boy I have never found them that easy to categorise.
My ex was neither effete or a hooray Harry but did have a notable family background. He was a gentle erudite man with liberal politics.
If my memory serves me Dominic West is the poshest of the lot and lives in castle in Ireland-definitely one of the Eton boys did
Nutballs – I’m going to call you Smutballs from now on. You are rude! But yes, I kinda get it. The posh boys are an antidote to the usual American boy totty fare. I like Jeffrey Dean Morgan for a similar reason – there are just no British men like him at all. So he seems in a way exotic to me but probably not to you. Add to that the excitable part of the fandom with a tendency to sanctify the object of affection beyond all rhyme or reason and I suppose you have it.
Icerose – you know I love you. And you know I admire your steadfast defence of all things LEGS in the face of my endlessly obnoxious ways. But we’ve trod that ground many times and we’re not talking about that ground today. You’re not American so you don’t count. Sorry!
Nutballs and I are just messing about and joshing with each other about the attraction of American gals to posh English boys. Regardless of which one lives in a castle and which one lives… well, wherever it is LEGS lives.
See, it’s not uptight-ness, suit wearing, traditional (old) prim “effete” posh that’s calling us to your shores. But rather a non-derogatory version of “effete” is what I think is accounting for the attraction to the current crop of posh Brits. These poshies don’t come off as uptight (repressed) in your traditional (old), stick-up-ass (mean), “establishment” (judge-y) Brit type.
They’re cultural “uptight-ness” seems to be a source of humor about them, an affable awkwardness. At the same time they still have an unassuming composure and confidence that doesn’t come off as arrogant but rather as understated sexiness. That coupled with an ease of good manners and decorum, good posture and looking impeccable yet at home in a suit is something we don’t see very much in US. I’d say our closest equivalent for me was John Kennedy Jr.
@sixer
My dear Sixer… I love your witty comments and because of that I will try to explain why we love Brits. I would not say posh Brits tbh. Being posh is not important. People want guys who are different compared to your own guys. When we look at your Brits we see Shakespeare Fans in suits, eloquent, well educated and just nice looking, talented actors who can act in cinemas but also on stage. The accent plays a role as well. Humor is essential. But the problem is this: It is just an image because the Brits I know are far away from being like Hiddles. Not that they are not nice. Just not like Cambridge Boy. May be a lot of people think that all British guys are like him which is not the case. And this is good. Different people, different taste. Just a question to you: do Englisch ladies even like Hiddles? I know women went crazy over Cumberbatch when I was in England.
@Nutballs
I knew why I loved you… Your little summary made me smile. Thanks for that.
@sixer
Jeffrey Dean Morgan so earth-sexy. Yeah totally different from TH, but you can’t deny sexiness no matter what flavor it comes in.
And it’s not the posh-ness that’s appealing to me. There’s got to be something more. In general I don’t have a “type” that I go crazy for like posh.
@Sixer, Joss Whedon used the word “effete” to describe him too. I don’t have a “type,” or not what others would consider a traditional “type” and some of the others described on this thread do absolutely nothing for me (one even repulses me) but I’ll try to explain if I can. The men in my very large extended family on my mom’s side (brothers, cousins, nephews) all look like Denis Leary and Matt Damon. Most of the guys I grew up with look and sound like Denis Leary and Matt Damon and John Krasinski. If they don’t look like Denis Leary and Matt Damon and John Krasinski, they look like the Italian, Puerto Rican, Jewish, or Domincan version of Matt Damon. Needless to say, Matt Damon does nothing for me. There is also something for me about how a man wears a suit. Some men, even though they wear them all the time, just cannot wear a suit as it should be worn. Donald Trump does nothing for a suit whereas Barack Obama rocks the hell out of suit. And Barack is about as effete as we get. We do have chinless wonders, yes. And there is an old Yankee elite that fits the posh, chinless wonder label, although they hide.
Sixer, HDM is an understandable crush. While I have seen and met men like him, I get why he’s exotic to you. I’m curious as to which Americans grab the attention of the British ladies, ’cause the only one that comes to mind when I think “American Hottie” is Oscar Isaac!
ETA: thank you, Guest. Glad I didn’t scare you away with that honest description. Mr Balls actually likes my frat boy ways, so I guess I found my match!
@Guest, of course, plenty of English ladies like Tom! I’d go so far as to say that we saw him first!
Remember, please, that most of the people the average English (and indeed British) lady meets do not look or sound anything like him. That’s partly the Eton-Cambridge-RADA thing giving him a polish and charm that most people never achieve, and partly that he genuinely is very intelligent and talented, and yet doesn’t come across as arrogant. That’s a truly rare combination, and a particularly appealing one to British sensibilities.
@Smutballs: I LOVE it!!! 😂
Smutballs (sorry!) – I am probably the wrong person to ask, since I am such an indiscriminate fancier of men and since literally every woman I know, whatever their age, profession, general taste, would put IDRIS at the top of their list. Honestly. Every single one. JDM really does have no British equivalent though. We don’t produce white men who are earthy-sexy like that. Maybe exotic isn’t the right word, but you see what I mean, right?
KTE – I can honestly say that LEGS or similar posh effete boys are never mentioned as objects of desire by any women I know. Not my friends in the pub. Not the women I work with. Not my aunts or cousins or cousins’ daughters. Outside the niche fandoms, these types just don’t seem to be totty to many people at all. Mention Idris and the entire room melts to a panting puddle. Mention the latest boybander and someone will say “my daughter has a pash on him”. Mention LEGS or any of the other posh totty and people go “who?” or “oh, him. Not so much”.
That’s precisely why I’m asking what’s the attraction to Americans!
Wow, thanks for the info! Yeah, it’s usually nice and recommended to take people’s for for it when it comes to their sexuality 😀
@Sixer so we know different people, is all. I know plenty of people who like Idris and Luther but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone pant over him.
He was dating an actress before he really got famous, but I think they broke up sometime after the first Thor movie. I saw a picture of him with her on the red carpet, she was a pretty brunette. Not famous, so sorry, can’t remember her name. That’s been the only girlfriend he was public with. He’s been linked to a lot of people include a music producer (?) who he went to Wimbledon and a vacation with (if you ever hear of JArthy or Bora Bora, people are referring to that relationship. There were rumors of him with Jessica Chastain and Elizabeth Olsen. I believe most of it, except for Jessica Chastain, which is sad, because they would be a hot couple.
I’m probably missing a lot, and I really don’t know about any gay rumors. Sorry I can’t be more help. He seems to keeps his private life, well, private, so I don’t know too many details. Most of what I know about his personal life, I learned on here.
Great! Thanks for this! 😀
Well we also have Mark Gatiss, who’s gay, openly tell everyone on Twitter Tom is not gay.
It’s funny because Americans have some macho men but I’ve found a lot of the overly masculine American men tend to be bi/gay and deep in the closet. More effeminate American men tend to be very good in bed from my experience. 😛 Why I will always find Tom attractive.
@Andrea, I am also puzzled by this dichotomy that, no matter how frequently the eventually revealed secrets of people’s personal lives seem to indicate that it is a very false one, seems to endure. #TeamEffete
Velvet, in some places it is called shit stirring, something the press and the anonymous internet is very good at.
@Andrea: “More effeminate American men tend to be very good in bed from my experience. 😛 Why I will always find Tom attractive.”
That is so true *blushes*
He looks like the usual “lovely Tom”. I’m loving the color of her dress, it’s very “Spring” but not so much the style. It just seems old. Perhaps there’s a bit of shagging going on with them in the same city or maybe they’re just reconnecting as friends. I wouldn’t really call them a couple.
That dress is very mumsy–no I do not think she is pregnant. I think they have been FWB for awhile and are so whenever they see each other and that is all.
She’s not pregnant. There has been a few recent photos of her with a perfectly flat stomach. The other day she was wearing a figure hugging black lace dress and another when she got her hair scrapped back in a pony whist wearing sports wear again her belly is flat.
Back at TIFF, people insisted she was pregnant because of the shapeless clothes she wore despite the fact that she appeared at Deauville days earlier in a skin-tight white dress that showed off a skinny waist. She tends to slouch and wear baggy clothes.
Sony just announced that he is doing Q&As Friday and Saturday nights in New York. He probably won’t be making it home for Easter.
Most likely he won’t because he also has something scheduled in NYC for Monday I think. A Bafta New York thing.
Then back to LA the following week for an Emmy thing for The Night Manager…then back to NYC for High-Rise and The Night Manager at the Tribeca Film Festival. Sheesh, I really want to see his frequent flier account.
I’m not a Hiddlestoner but I like Hiddles but he needs to stop doing accents and impersonalisations. It’s like they don’t know how to engage his personality so they just get him to do voices all the time. English humour tips, anyway?
Very good point Green Tea. His impressions are best when they just come out of him unconsciously anyway. When he’s put on the spot, and it’s completely out of context it’s likely to fall flat. Also it doesn’t have the same kick as the original situations where people first saw him spontaneously do Owen Wilson, CEvens, or Joey the horse etc.
Twitter and Tumblr seem to be convinced that THEO laughed off and dismissed rumours of them dating yesterday. Am I the only one not seeing this? They didnt deny anything they both dodged the question and brought it back round to work and how long they have known eachother and been ‘good friends’ It’s really weird how the click bait sites have just ran with this denial when there was no denial at all. If anything the way they both responded confirms it to me, because they were both given the oppurtunity to say no we are just friends these stories arent true, and neither of them did that at all.
Are you referring to the separate E! interviews at the Los Angeles premier during which they both did deny? People are going to believe what they want to believe, despite not having any facts to support the theories
Yes I am referring to them interviews, there was one on the red carpet with both of them and another with Elizabeth during the junket. Please show me where they actually denied anything because I didnt hear any denials. They brushed the question off and talked about something else. There was no denial. A denial is no we are not dating, the tabloid stoies arent true, like when Chastain denied dating Tom her response was, why would they say that it just simply isnt true. neither of them said anything like that. elizabeth laughed about the fact she had been linked to 3 avengers. and tom laughed along with the reporter making a joke. There were no denials. People who dont want them to be dating will see what they want to see, despite them having no facts to support their theories.
DT, it proves nothing either way. I totally get your point but I also get lilacflowers. Maybe they didn’t outright deny because they assumed going along with the joke and how silly rumours are is basically agreeing it’s not true anyway. Maybe they didn’t confirm or deny because the question allowed them to vaguely agree with the silliness of gossip but not give anything else away. It’s all a lot of maybes and at this point I think everyone involved must be resigned to the fact that whatever they say it’ll be interpreted in every way possible lol.
@DT, some of us do not care who either of them get involved with, so long as it is with a consenting adult. They have both issued repeated denials. Perhaps you should contact them with the exact words you wish them to say?
But really, if they were FWB, they really aren’t dating. And that’s not something you “confirm”. It’s way too intimate and private to share.
That was a really awkward question, I kind of felt bad for them lol. Whatever their relationship is, friends or dating, it was basically the interviewer saying oh, those news stories about you dating must be funny to you!! and I guess the quickest and easiest response is to say oh yeah they are haha. Just go along with the interviewer, done, onto the next interview.
At the end of the day there’s always going to be a group who think they are dating and a group think they aren’t until they confirm or date others lol.
Dating others won’t stop those who will insist they were together in the past and ended it based on their own imaginations.
Honestly I don’t understand these two. If you are dating, just admit it. If not, then say it. If you are friends, good for you although we have never seen you before together. Okay may be once. But hey what do I know. I honestly think he is the reason for this hide and seek behavior. Just don’t why. He is not that famous, you know. Childish in my eyes. But as people said before: it is his life and he can do whatever he wants to do. As for a reporter asking that question: pretty normal…. As long as they deny everything and she keeps being spotted near him, people will wonder and ask….
Well, that’s true lol. It’s not so much the belief that they may or may not have dated that personally bugs me, it’s the intrusive and assuming value judgements people put on their belief. Does that make sense? e.g. They can’t be dating because they weren’t with each other on their birthdays; Tom’s too career focussed to treat a relationship right; they must be dating and obviously they had an affair. The incessant need to cyber monitor them and spin that personal belief of ‘maybe they did/of course there not’ into an unfair narrative is a bit uncomfy to me.
It’s like Elizabeth said about the many dating rumours surrounding her (new interview, similar question to the one alluded to above): some people *really* care. Some will insist she’s talking about ‘fan girls shipping them’ but I also think she’s talking about any overinvested person. I’m still shocked by what I read on JVR’s instagram. That wasn’t fangirls, that was tin hat conspiracy theorists who want to catch Tom out for ‘lying’. Both groups can be overwhelming in their own ways, but the majority of people I’ve seen who ‘really care’ about this is the ones who like to monitor Tom’s every move just to make up negative gossip about his private life.
As I said above, it’s all good, dating or not. I don’t live their life and I don’t have an inside track on what they do or how and why they respond in certain ways. I do however feel sorry for both of them if they’re aware of the nastier comments flung at them, and I send good vibes to anyone they may date (Tom in particular because lbr it’s his fandom which fosters these people) in future. No point overanalysing every second of it, I’m too lazy for that lol.
ps my response was directed at ‘lilacflowers’, not ‘me’. Just clarifying because they’re saying two rather different things and I’m only agreeing/discussing with one of them.
@N, I agree about the value judgments. People speculate and then make value judgments and accusations based on those speculations, without any facts to support any of it, and then other people believe the speculation and value judgments. I need to prove things with solid evidence in my line of work and I tend to carry that over into the rest of my life. I also have lots of male friends and it really bothers me when people jump to conclusions about relationships. There are many in this world who truly believe that there is no such thing as a platonic friendship between men and women.
“I send good vibes to anyone they may date (Tom in particular because lbr it’s his fandom which fosters these people) in future. No point overanalysing every second of it, I’m too lazy for that lol.”
I hear ya. I feel bad for EO because she got to invade his personal space and now the target is on her back. I remember how nasty people were to his then GF Susannah.
@ jammypants, Which is probably why Tom doesn’t comment now.
@jammy, I’m not saying she (or anyone) deserves any of the vitriol I’ve seen flying about, but if someone told me I would get to invade Tom’s personal space in exchange for a little trash-talk from some intellectually-deficient internet trolls, I might consider that a fair bargain!
She’s twirling her hair when she denies it – immaturity or a bad liar???
DT I too noticed that there were no actual denials, just laughing off the question or deflecting it. For some, that means they’ve had a purely platonic relationship all along and to others they’ve ventured into the FWB territory, but have no intention of discussing it publicly. People will draw their own conclusions from what they’ve seen of them the past year. I think they both used the rumor to promote themselves and the film last summer and the fact that she was caught in Hawaii visiting the SI set, gives weight to the theory that they were shagging when they could be together.
It’s really neither here nor there, just impressions. A person doesn’t have to care one way or another to have them. DT makes an accurate observation in her original post and while it doesn’t prove anything, it does look like THEO trying to hide something. Believe what you will.
Yeah, I didn’t hear any denials either. Their comments certainly weren’t “definitive proof” of anything, except what each listener wanted to hear. I swear THEO is becoming the next Blue Dress/Gold Dress of the interwebs. *Shrug* whatever. Two consenting adults who are just friends…or not. Either way, mazel tov to them. They looked like they had fun together at the premiere in LA.
In other news, iTunes has Move It On Over from the ISTL soundtrack available for purchase. If you compare this version with the one Tom did at Wheatland, there is quite an improvement. Sure, the soundtrack had the benefit of all the modern equipment in a studio, but I still thought it was quite good.
They actually recorded with old equipment to get that distinct sound 🙂
Hang on to your hats kids! There’s another Charlie Rose show to look forward to – tonight (Thursday)! Although it may depend on when Charlie airs in your area.
As worthless as that Today Show appearance was, I’m hoping this makes up for it.
Oh, my God!
How many places one person can be in just one day?
Tom was Today Show in this morning, then in another ISTL’s screening and to finish the day he will be in Charlie Rose show.
Poor guy, he must be tired!

I am now on Episode 5 of TNM. Lovely show, and in my opinion Olivia is nailing it.
Hate to say it though, O my Dragonflies, but Tom’s acting is some of the most wooden I have seen coming from him. Everything he has done has been better than this. I’m actually a bit surprised.
I am also finding the script to be disappointing.
I’m thinking Tom is trying to act non-committal, sort of hiding his real feelings, but I know what you mean. There has been criticism of the script, although a lot of the dialogue is taken straight from the book. Having said that viewing figures are great. Last two episodes have had me nail biting, and I’ve read the book!
