Anne Hathaway just welcomed her first child, baby boy Jonathan Rosebanks, back in early April. Which is making Anne’s press tour for Alice Through the Looking Glass sort of odd, because Anne seems sort of punch-drunk from the lack of sleep involved with being a mom to a newborn. You can see that in these photos from last night’s LA premiere – a well-rested Anne Hathaway never would have chosen this completely weird Christopher Kane dress. And she looks really tired in these photos too. Tired but pretty! But damn, that dress is bad.
Annie’s lack of sleep might also explain a social media faux pas she made yesterday. Anne has been Instagram for a while now, and her IG has become a window into her interests, her loves, and her dislikes. She loves Beyonce to a crazy degree, as we know from this Instagram. She also believes in feminism, freeing Kesha and cute animal photos. But yesterday, Anne found herself embroiled in an Instagram controversy when she posted this:
“In a world full of Kardashians, be a Helena Bonham Carter.” Which is a great meme, plus Annie was giving props to her costar in Alice Through the Looking Glass. If given a choice, I too would rather be an HBC than a Kardashian. The comparison is right there, in the meme, and of course you’re “pitting women against each other.” But sleep-deprived Annie took the Instagram down and posted this in its place:
I’m calling bulls—t! She knew what she was doing and even more than that, IT WAS A COMPLETELY VALID POINT. In a world full of Kardashians, dare to be someone less vapid, more eccentric. Dare to march to the beat of your own drummer. I would have thought more of Anne if she had kept the original IG up and not apologized. But I bet pro-Kardashian people were blowing up her comments. Ugh.

How can that be anything other than intentional?
Come on Anne. If you can’t own it don’t say it.
Team Anne. She’s hotter than ever. Natural beauty.
@Danny …
Me too! And agreed … Anne is a true natural beauty. 🙂
As talented as Helena is – she always looks like she needs a good scrubbing, and some clothes that she didn’t pick out in the dark while strung out on mushrooms. Talent for days, but my god she always looks SO BAD.
Kim often looks bad too – but in a different way.
Disagree a million times. HBC is earthy and messy and a gazillion times more gorgeous than the plastic polished primped (and pimped) Kardashians. HBC is real, KKK is a nightmare.
Oh I’m not saying you should strive to look like the K’s either.
I just think that if you’re a public figure, showing up for press type events, it wouldn’t hurt to look like you didn’t just stumble into the outfit you’re wearing, or like a character in your husbands movies.
And let’s face it – that photo of HBC is one of the most put together looking photos of her. She can’t dress herself.
Both HBC and the K’s seem to generally have a problem with dressing themselves. K’s go way too tiny, and HBC wears outfits that she’s swimming in.
There IS a middle ground between being ‘real’ and ‘earthy’ and ‘fake’ and ‘primped’.
I want a reality show where HBC and the Kardashians have to wear each other’s clothes for a week. 😉
I like Helena’s style. I would never wear that, but it fits her personality. She is weird. She likes challenging people’s standards. She doesnt only not want to be a fashion icon – she actively defies fashion.
The K’s always look a mess and think they are changing the world.
@ Lillie – I’d watched that! Kinda like wife swap but for fashion.
The dress would be nice if it wasn’t for the weird straps. She’s so pretty.
I like that she removed the picture. It was pitting women against women.
In a world that’s already so hard for women, be whatever the hell you want to be, and let other people be whatever the hell they want to be.
Yes, in a world that is already so hard for me as a woman, I should be forced to swallow my thoughts and my opinions on another person because it has a vagina and not a penis. Just like before, women were forced to swallow their words because the person in question had a penis.
Do you think it is the right thing to do?
Did I say that?
She didn’t express her opinion on the Kardashians. She said be this, and don’t be this, which is just another set of rules for young girls, like there aren’t enough of them already.
You don’t think her post expressed her opinion on the issue? Do you think she is pro-Kardashian? Do you think she adviced people to be like HBC because in reality she is a covert KK wannabe?
What is this? Semantics? Everything people post on their personal IG pages represents their opinions, no matter how they phrase it. And I bet she picked up that pic from somewhere online, I don’t think she made it herself. But she posted it because it fits her opinions. The gist of it is clear.
There is a difference in saying “I think like this” and “YOU should act like this”.
Agree with als. Why do you have to put someone down to put somebody else up? This meme is everywhere; the names sometimes change, and it’s gross every time.
Says the person who whines and complains about Jolie being chosen to lecture at LSE for doing activism work against sexual violence in war zones.
Yeah, I’m a horrible horrible hypocrite.
What does that have to do with this post?
@SilkyMalice- I know. WTH?
I didn’t see Locke Lamora’s post about Angelina* but I have never known her to whine or complain. She expresses her opinion with confidence. I don’t always agree with her, but I respect her and her right to have an opinion.
*because people on the Angelina threads are so aggressive and hostile
Aaaw, thanks GNAT, that’s so nice. I had a pretty shitty day today, this just cheered me up a bit.
I was wrong in the Angelina thread though, I didn’t read the article properly.
Locke – I was in a difference of opinion with you yesterday – but I have to agree with you here. And while I don’t always agree with you, I think you at least put some decent thought into your positions and you’ve never been rude to me.
And I’m in an incredibly bad mood today, too.
I REALLY hate it when people bring up something a commenter said on a different post. It always comes across as so petty to me.
I agree with GNAT and Erinn. @Locke I don’t think you misread the article so much as we were all discovering the differences in academic terminology. As GNAT mentioned AJ threads get bad and if you’re not a die hard fan people jump on you. I don’t think you were criticizing AJ or being anti women simply because you questioned a title.😊
I agree.
I haven’t seen who’s posted what on which thread.
But I am all for expressing one’s opinion and respecting others’ opinions when they don’t jive with mine.
That said, I would have respected Anne much more had she left the original post up and not succumbed to pressure from the haters.
What ever happened to being able to take a stand and say it?
She didn’t use hate or disrespectful words against anyone.
It was a comparison and opinion.
It’s exhausting to constantly worry about pleasing the masses.
Take a stand, say it respectfully, and own it.
I’m with Anne – love her – but she disappoints by caving in.
This seems like I total topic change, but I am replying to the initial post: The straps are what completely sells me on this dress : ) Different strokes, folks.
Sometimes I think celebs are much better off not being on social media.
Everyone would be much better off not being on social media.
Agreed. I was just talking with Mr. M about how our children aren’t going to know what it’s like growing up without social media or the internet like we did and it makes me sad. I feel like life was simpler and had more innocence before the Internet brought instant gratification, online bullying, and social media. Social media has already turned an entire generation of kids into walking zombies with their noses stuck in their smartphones and reducing themselves to only caring about how they look and posting a great selfie for the day, or three of four. Granted I have adult friends that have fallen into this rabbit hole but they are far and few between compared to the tweens/teens/twenty somethings I know.
lol how was that unintentional? you could only like that meme if you agree that Kardashians are untalented and Bonham Carter is a great actress. it does not make sense otherwise.
Why not owning it, she was absolutely right!! I have even more respect now for Blake Lively since she still hasn’t removed her perfectly fine pic with the Lyrics to Baby Got Back.
People need to get a chill pill and stand by what they write in the first place, especially when it’s not that bad as publicity makes it look like.
Oh thank you! People just need to calm the F down and stop trying to find offence in everything.
I’m stunned there are actually pro Kardashian people. Why?!?!
I know right – how is that possible??? Can’t they go away already? I feel like puncturing my eyes every time I see any of them.
Not news to me unfortunately
Some of my various “from high school ” friends have listed that show as their fave on Facebook, and no not ironically smh
I am surprised she wasn’t fined for shading the Kardashians.
Stay tuned! It seems as if being fined for “offending” is right around the corner.
This IS comparing women to each other, and saying one is better than the other. Don’t get me wrong, I would rather be Helena Bonham Carter (or, my favorite version, Joanna Gaines) than be a Kardashian, but that still doesn’t mean that we should trash the Kardashians. Women are often pitted against each other to keep them focused on petty things instead of on the things that truly matter: $.78 on the dollar wages, the eroding of women’s rights, etc. It also feeds into the slut/virgin dichotomy (I’m this instead of that, so I’m better than that) that fucks up so many women’s relationships and lives. Do I want my (possible) daughter to grow up to be Kim Kardashian? No. But I also don’t think trashing Kim, or any of the Kardashians, contributes to a productive conversation about self-worth, beauty, or style. It just simply makes someone feel better about themselves when they can say they are better than someone else.
The Kardashians should be trashed. All they promote is plastic surgery and shallowness and materialistic behavior and how to make a living off of that. They should be in the dictionary under the definition of narcissistic or self-absorbed or vapid.
I agree. They are horrible and their gender has nothing to do with it. Putting women above criticism does us no favors.
I tend to agree. I’m not sure why it seems like we have gone to a place where we are afraid to identify what is vapid and trashy.
Agree.
Agree. It’s not anti-feminist to point out that something or someone is awful if they are in fact awful.
The word “trash” can be a little strong, because people in the internet have very little boundaries when it comes to adressing each other. But I don’t see what’s wrong about criticizing the Kardashians.
The K’s just took a note from Taylor Swift. Feminism isn’t just a political movement now, but a trend. It’s cool to be a feminist if you’re a teenage girl. And teenage girls, just like teenage boys, are understandably dumb and uncritical. All you need to do to convince them something is sexist, is telling them so. So these women shield behind feminism everytime they are critcized because they know how many people will buy it and defend them.
There’s a difference between discourse about the impact to society and “trashing” other women. I don’t think they’re a role model. In all honesty, I find them a little bit pitiful. But the discourse should be around how we create positive role models, NOT just dogging the Kardashians. This is a gossip website, and it’s fun to say, Oh, I hate that dress, or why does she serial-date? But actively trashing people all the time with the kind of language we see used for the Kardashians isn’t kind and it isn’t productive. Just my two cents.
I disagree. I think the phrase “in a world full of Kardasians” is not meant to pit one woman against another, but is shorthand for “in a world where people are rich and famous for being vain, superficial, money hungry, willing to do anything for money and attention, willing to wear anything for for attention and money, devoid of values or a desire to help others, completely selfish and greedy, having no original body parts, sending a message of self-hatred to young women” and all the rest. It’s meant to say in a world where people are telling you to plasticize your face beyond recognition so you will look like a thousand other plastic dolls, be an original. Be yourself. I think the Kardasians represent the worst in our society, and it gives me hope that people are recognizing that.
GNAT, I have nothing but respect for you, and I think you add a lot to the discourse on Celebitchy. I don’t agree with you here, I think using the name creates the dialogue about that particular family and creates a comparison between HBC and the Kardashians, with it being clear that HBC is “better.” I’m not sure that creates the positive discourse we need to have about why women make the decisions to alter their bodies and sell their sex tapes. But I still think you’re awesome.
ITA, GNAT and Jayna.
I also think people are reading WAY too much into this, but nothing new there lol.
+1 million GNAT-very well stated!
@LizLemon
I think you’re awesome, too! And I see your point. Maybe it would be better not to name the names or use actual human beings to say what I think she was trying to say. That’s a valid argument.
I don’t get how it was “unintentional” though, do you?
@GNAT you articulated that way better than i would have, but yes
GNAT, you are my (articulate) hero.
Just own your shade.
That is all.
Does anyone have a link to the image Anne used? People have made this meme about absolutely everyone and HBC is the only one I *can’t* find.
I found it easily enough using google image reverse search.
But CB can be funny about links sometimes (which is fair enough, no-one wants spam or virus links). I’ll post the links in another, separate reply. If that gets deleted, I did try, but you’ll have to image search for yourself.
If you don’t know how, it’s really easy. Right click on image on this page, copy image location. Go to google images, copy link to image location into the search bar, and press the camera button instead of the magnifying glass “search”button. (They’re right next to each other.) Pics show up on first page.

Awesome! Thank you. I could not find it for the life of me. I had completely forgotten about reverse image lookup. 😔
She looks gorgeous but social media hasn’t been her friend these past few months.
That may be the most hideous dress I’ve ever seen. Sorry for the Anne lovers, but she is hardly one to throw shade at anyone. She has definitely toned it down and took off her crown, but she was once the object of many people’s disdain. Maybe motherhood brought her back to earth.
This is really getting F’in ridiculous at this point- it’s like the offended Olympics lately. “Let’s see what will offend me today!” Really?! –This is not pitting women against women. It’s really not that serious! I’m so disappointed where feminism is going lately- never ever thought I would feel that way either. Women are still allowed to have opinions, and express it, even if someone doesn’t like it. Women are still allowed to not want to have the moral compass of a Kardashian, and women are also allowed to say it! Women are also allowed to want to hold themselves up to a different standard and not be shamed for it. (See it works in both ways) And really, look what people are defending here! There is nothing wrong with this meme. Nothing. With the real issues women face this is what we are going to take up with?
Let me also add as a mother of teenage girls. Sometimes they DO need to be reminded that it’s ok to not be a “Kardashian” or whatever is in right now. And that it is ok to be different EVEN if it’s outside of what’s popular at the moment- essentially what this meme states. Teens and women in general feel pressured to conform to what society wants them to be- which is essential the s3x pot with an amazing body, but not everyone wants to be that way or can be. See there’s more than one way too look at a picture.
Totally!!!
This^^^^^^ all day long! The voice of reason. Thank you!!
+1 to all of the above!
AMEN!!!
Yaaaasss! We need to value reason and logic, and those who speak it. Let’s start a revolution. Who’s with me?
Agree TOTALLY.
Exactly. I don’t understand why the Kardashians are lauded for being vapid, but when others challenge those values they’re accused of being anti-woman. The Kardashians are free to be as shallow and materialistic as they wish but they should not be immune to criticism. Other than possibly promoting sex positivity I fail to see any real value to their societal contribution. All I see is financial and physical ruin for young women who attempt to replicate their costly artifice
Agree with all of the above. Being a feminist does not mean you can’t have opinions! Anne’s biggest mistake here I think is trying too hard to please everyone. Can’t be done, I tried for years.
So what. Everything is a controversy, people can say whatever they want. Rather it’s correct or appropriate is a another story.
Of course ,she posted it intentionally. North West didn’t post it, as she’s known to do.
Anne saw the meme, must have agreed with it and posted it.
I don’t like the K/J’s, but most celebs know that if you talk crap about them people will react.
Either they will love you for it, or it will start some sort of petty twitter beef.
Either way, the K/J are easy targets because they are overexposed and represent nothing but materialism, artificial beauty and vapidness.
Not to mention, they post stupid pictures holding teas and stuff that they don’t use, but say they do to make more money.
Or how Kylie is always doing Ebay auctions to donate to a “Childern Hosptial”.
She could just donate some of her own money that she uses to buy thousand dollar watches and take care of her boyfriends.
Anne looks so beautiful.
I wish Anne wouldn’t have allowed herself to be bullied into taking down her post.
Same. Her desperation to be liked come hell or high water, makes me just sad for her.
I feel like you’re not allowed to have an opinion about anyone anymore without people saying things like “pitting women against women” “shaming” “anti feminist”, so I have to support and praise you (whomever) unconditionally, no matter what you say or do…just because we’re both women? That is crazy to me, but I guess this is one of those things that we will have agree to disagree on.
I feel that way too sometimes.
I don’t even read that meme as shade. It’s more like in a world of sexy people id rather be comfy or something.. Neither are insulting, both just different choices. I suppose it depends on your view on the kardashians, and whether you consider their name an insult.
+1
May I just say that I really like what HBC is wearing in the picture Anne posted of her? It looks comfortable and fun.
I think Anne’s dress is very on-theme for Alice Through the Looking Glass. I just wish it were hemmed a little better.
She looks beautiful, and I think she’s a sweetheart. I can believe she wasn’t trying to shade anyone, even if the point was valid.
I was going to post the same thing. The flowers on her dress are exactly what you’d find in the Red Queen’s rose garden.
I told y’all before that Anne can do no wrong! Jk. But seriously, I see nothing wrong with the original post and apology is fine as well… Maybe my thinking is flawed. Plus, I’m biased 😩 I love her.
I love her too. This can be a lonely forum for AnnE supporters.
Let’s stick together! *pulls Kitten closer*
I like Anne’s dress, but the strappy things need to be up on her shoulders. They look odd hanging there.
I seriously love HBC. She’s a great actress and I love how well she cleans up. BUT I also love how she dresses down, as if she has no f*cks to give.
I see the shade thrown against the Kardashians, but I don’t get the woman against woman complaint. Apparently a woman can’t criticize another woman these days? I honestly saw nothing wrong with the meme. I’ll criticize the Kardashians all day long and it has nothing to do with them being women. It has everything with them being clueless, vapid and annoying…the complete opposite of HBC.
THIS. I’ll judge the hell out of the K’s like I do with everyone else. You can call me annoying, judgemental, cynical, etc. But not sexist. Because I judge men too, and how can I possibly be sexist for treating a woman as I’d treat a man?
Ugh, the reaction of the fans, as well as her knee jerk reaction to remove it bothers be. Objectively… whose faces do you see plastered on social media, ads, and television? HBC? No; Kardashians. Who are millions of young people trying to emulate as far as make up trends, fashion sense and lifestyle? HBC? Again, no; Kardashians.
We ARE living in a world of Kardashians in a sense and Dammit! Dare to be different! Dare to be quirky! Be a damn HBC! The idea that Hathaway was shading anyone or attempting to put women against one another is reaching, in my opinion. And she’s not telling people in a bossy way how to live their lives. She’s simply saying via some stupid meme that it’s okay not to jump on the bandwagon. Man, people are so damned sensitive.
Nothing unintentional about it at all~
I don’t love the dress, but this weight and hair is working for her. She looks gorgeous.
A girl came working to our work place and she was wearing a looot of makeup. I mean she looked like a clown but in a whorish way. I can’t express it in words. There where I work there are harsh rules about makeup, clothes, behavior. Hell we can’t even post photos of our work place. It’s forbidden. Now, we woman all put makeup on and i paint my nails in dark shades BUT if someone wakes up and calls me out for that i would obey immediately. Long story short all the men were commenting on her of how she looked and we (women) defended her just because but still judging her for her stupid look among ourselves….
Finally someone higher decided it was enough of her show and called ME (because I don’t know) and asked me to gently tell her to stop it with all that. I called her, offered her a coup of coffee, talked some and finally told her, i mean i was gentle and kind and just told her to tone it down because rules…. She started a campaign of “terror” i must say. She took it personally telling everybody I was putting her down and blah blah blah. because nobody was listening she went to the same person who gave me the task to complain. I was called there and because she was ALMOST starting to cry i was asked to apologize to her and she was told to my face that she looked “Just fine the way she was” because they were afraid of being accused of something (men!!!!), Because i am a WOMAN i didn’t give a fuck of her almost crying and i told things how they were. I called out my superior, i called out everybody and finally I told her she looked like a whore and those were not even my words. I wasn’t putting her down, i was just stating a fact. (she had problems with her clothes also). And i told her as far I was concerned she could wear whatever she wanted I was on her team (women stuff) but I wasn’t obliged to like her or respect her for that.
Now the KKlan are who they are and EBC is who she is. I like neither of the way they dress and when I see them I laugh at both parties BUT IF I have to point a finger at the ones which give me bad vibes I most certainly would point at KK.
I am allowed to judge thank you very much but I couldn’t care less fueling a debate between them. I can laugh at people, I can have an opinion and I can make it public if I care. When something is ridiculous it is just that full stop be it a man or a woman. Let us be with this Political correctness bullshit thing. The world it’s much better with critical thinking and courage to call things by their name. That’s how we evolved in the first place. If someone is brave enough to do shit on camera i think that someone is brave enough to take some healthy criticism for it. Thank you and sorry for the long rant but bad days are coming for me ladies soooo….sorryyyy
This makes me like her more! That meme should be on a T – shirt. I see far too many kardashianesque girls out there. She should have stuck to her original post. Back peddling is so annoying. Stick to your original thought or rethink it properly the first time.
Just own it!!! They’re trashy – you called it! ‘Be an original not a troll’
