Ashley Graham wears shapewear ‘every day, I’m in shapewear 80% of the time’

Late last week, DNCE (the band fronted by Joe Jonas) debuted their latest music video for the song “Toothbrush.” The song is all about how a guy likes a girl and it’s not just a one-time hookup and she can leave her toothbrush at his place. God help me, but I’m becoming a late-in-life Jonas-Brothers fan, because I sort of enjoyed DNCE’s “Cake By the Ocean” and I’m about to defend the hell out of this music video. The video stars Ashley Graham, the plus-sized model getting a lot of attention this year. And her appearance isn’t for jokes, it isn’t some kind of big-C COMMENTARY. She’s a beautiful woman and her sex appeal, within the video, is presented as a given. I enjoyed the hell out of this:

So, yes, Ashley is getting tons of attention this year. It started (for me) with her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover, and I will continue to defend her because I sort of think she’s an awesome, inspirational person. Ashley chatted with People Magazine about her new swimwear line (for all sizes, regular and plus-sized). Some highlights:

When did you feel your sexiest on the red carpet? “My sexiest red carpet look hands down was the Oscars… I know that it was going to be the talk of the town. I felt so hot and sexy at the Vanity Fair party. When you see the circle that says Vanity Fair and you stand there in front of all of the cameras and the lights, it’s a rush you get. Then when you know you look damn fine it’s like ‘yes!’

Shapewear: Do you love it or hate it? “I wear it every day. I do like to see my ass jiggle every once in a while in a dress. My husband says it makes this sound ‘dadada.’ I think it’s really sexy. Overall I’m in shapewear 80% of the time.

Scariest beauty story ever? “I’m on set and the makeup artist is doing my eyeliner and she’s in my face with the eyeliner brush and she licked the brush and put it on my eye. I froze and didn’t know what to do.

What do you do when you wake up and don’t feel like a supermodel? “I still have mornings when I wake up and I feel fat or I feel like my cellulite is really kicking in that day. I have to look myself in the mirror and I take my own advice, I talk to those different parts. I tell myself I am beautiful. I tell myself I am bold and brilliant. I just look at myself and say ‘slay girl.’

On her swimsuit line: “Everything is inspired by James Bond and I want the girl who is wearing them to feel like James Bond.”

[From People]

I can’t imagine wearing shapewear every day, but that’s why she’s a model and I’m a blogger! But to wear shapewear 80% of the time? Like, in life, just going about your business? That seems like a pain in the ass. As for the rest of it… the licked brush story is so disgusting, and I’ve never told myself “slay girl” in the mirror. Maybe I should start.

The Jonas Brothers always did have musical talent. They played their own instruments and could sing without magic microphones. They were working for years before The Mouse noticed them and got a piece of the action. They weren’t built by Disney.

    • me says:

I think Nick and Joe have talent, Kevin not so much.

    • Sarah says:

      THIS.
It’s a weird realization since their association is Disney (channel). But I remember when there album “A Little Bit Longer” came out and everyone was surprised Rolling Stone gave it a ton of stars and a rave review. I was just a teeny-bopper who was in love with Nick & Joe but giving credit where it’s due, the brothers having a ‘seconding coming’ is no surprise. I’m happy for them! Especially Joe since I feel like Nick has always had it a little easier since the girls (and guys) have always loved him.

  2. NeNe's Wig says:

    I love her.

  3. Wren says:

Don’t many celebrities wear shapewear regularly? I know KK does, because her clothes are so tight we can see it. And I know I’ve read about other famous women saying they wear spanx “all the time”. So, uncomfortable but not unusual in that world.

  4. me says:

If you’re really proud of your curves, why the need to wear shapewear everyday? Is she coming out with her own line of them or something?

    • Colette says:

You can be proud of your curves and still want to hide unsightly lumps and bumps.I am proud of my breasts yet I still wear a bra even there is no medical or scientific reason to wear one.I wear a bra because clothes look better with a bra on,IMO.

      • Sam says:

That’s not wholly accurate. Breasts can cause back and shoulder strain if they are large enough. Wearing a bra can help prevent that.

And I don’t see why lumps and bumps should be considered “unsightly.” They are a part of the human form. And it’s common knowledge that the more fat you have, the more uneven distribution you can get and those lumps and bumps will be more common. So yeah, I do think that if we’re going to have an honest discussion about body positivity, we should be asking why she does this. Body pride is not just about weight, but extends to loving all the “imperfections” -scars, lumps, bumps, and all.

    • LadyMTL says:

I think it’s not necessarily about curves but feeling good in your clothes.
I only recently bought some spanx underwear because I had a really gorgeous formfitting skirt that I wanted to wear but no matter what I put under it I always saw pantylines. So I bit the bullet and bought shapewear (little shorts that stop mid-thigh) and man, what a difference! No VPL and I loved how my bum looked in it, and I have an almost classic hourglass shape that I like very much. 🙂

    • Veronica says:

I’m not a huge fan of it, but I will admit that can help certain kinds of clothing lay nicer on the body. Certain fabrics can cling to panty lines, kick up static with undergarments, etc.

  5. paolanqar says:

I don’t remember her Oscar dress and the Vanity Fair party dress was a bit too much for my liking but she is a stunning woman. Strikingly beautiful.

  6. Chicagogurl says:

She looks so hot all the time but in this video, she’s just so dang gorgeous and effervescent. Love her interviews. I will forever be telling myself upon the last look in the mirror before i head out the door, “Slay it, girl”. Bless. More Ashley.

  7. Kate says:

I wear shapewear everyday. I’m not overweight, but due to having kids I have a bit of a stomach skin overhang that jiggles about. I’m truly much comfier physically with that held in place. I’m pretty much in Spanx whenever I’m not lazing about on the couch or asleep. I actually love wearing tighter than usual shapewear while working out, it helps with my posture and form, and again, keeps everything in place during high impact cardio.

I don’t even notice it, except when I have to pee. It’s such a pain to get off and on.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

Agree with everything you said Kate. I don’t have kids but I’m working hard to drop 20 pounds of post breakup weight.
      Ashely is freaking gorgeous!

      • Isa says:

I love the way I look and feel in my workout clothes. I want to wear them everywhere, but I don’t. 😞 they just suck everything in and make things nice and firm looking.

    • Wilma says:

Yup. I too wear it every day since having a baby and for the same reasons. I don’t wear stuff that’s tighter than needed, just tight enough to keep my belly together.

    • E says:

      Agreed!
I’m 4 mos postpartum and my relationship to shape wear has totally changed from special occasion to everyday wear. Also, there are different intensities. My more routine shapewear is more of “shapewear light” and really helps my clothes fit better and me feel better in them.

  8. Mimz says:

Loved that video and song the first second i saw it when it came out last week. I am also a late-in-life Jonas brothers kind of fan , I enjoyed Nick’s album and am enjoying this DNCE music a lot. I also like Joe’s duet with Hailee Steinfeld “Rock Bottom”. So teen-crushy but so good.
I like her and in her profession I understand needing to wear that stuff all the time. But I can’t imagine doing that.

    • QQ says:

OOOOOOHH WEEE say that again! Nick’s Album quietly GOES HARD!! Right?!??! that was what put Justin Bieber on notice that someone else had his lane and pitched him into the half hearted apology tour!!!

  9. BendyWindy says:

I bought DNCE’s EP a few months ago, it’s just four songs, but they’re all amazing. I’ve had it in constant rotation. Their clothes and stage antics are a little try-hard, but the music is great.

    • QQ says:

I saw them in the Billboard and said ABSOLUTELY NOT WITH THIS MESSY NONSENSE in the carpet , but this song sorta makes me want to listen

  10. Mike says:

Honestly, she’s probably one of, if not the, most beautiful model working right now.

Also, I love the fact that she’s an almost 30 year old woman. It seems like for a lot of models if you haven’t broken into the industry by your mid-twenties, you’re pretty much done and won’t ever make it.

    • Kitten says:

      Yes ITA with everything.

    • Sam says:

Plus models tend to be older. One of my college friends did a small amount of plus-sized modeling and was privy to the workings of it. Plus-sized models tend to be sought after because the desired body type is quite rare (carries extra weight in the thighs and butt and chest as opposed to carrying in the hips and stomach and arms, etc.). Thus, agencies will make exceptions for them that average models do not get (heights requirement, age preferences, etc.). Ashley Graham, for example, is 5ft 9in., which while tall by normal standards, is actually regarded as towards the short side for a model (most agencies want 5 ft. 8 minimum and lean towards those approaching 6 ft.).

      • Dee says:

5’9″ is actually a typical modelling height and totally acceptable as long as the proportions are right (long legs). Linda, Cindy and Naomi are all 5’9″ but with the body type and heels appeared much taller.

  11. Ayra. says:

I caught myself singing along to the song too.. Do your thing Joe.

  12. QQ says:

I adore her, she is so cute and positive and sexy… but also Go Off druggie Jonas with this tune!! !! Is Catchy!! ( I Know there is another song on the radio but im one of those music snobs that doesn’t listen to the radio ) Regular Chicks and Women My size are gonna be so thirsty and happy to see themselves as a factual love interest that they will be your Come Up… Much like how women a certain age (Mine) caught the Dog Whistle in Nick’s Album and went in droves for it . me and my gfs textually had this convo last week when we saw the stills for the video since we all follow Ashley but didnt even know Druggie Jonas had a new group thing going)

    • kanyekardashian says:

There is so much wrong with your comment that I don’t even know where to start. It gave me a headache trying to figure out what you’re talking about.

      • Tanga says:

Strange. I understood everything she wrote. Hmm. maybe your comprehension skills are the problem. I found nothing “wrong” with what was written.

  13. HeyThere! says:

Catchy song and I love cake by the ocean!!!! I’m just glad it’s a different body type than a stick figure 15 year old. It’s been played out over and over. She’s a lot of men’s dream lady! Some guys don’t like stick with no boobs and some love it. Nobody is wrong, it’s just what you like. I have a tall muscle covered husband but lots of girls don’t like big tall muscular men.

  14. LizLemonGotMarried says:

I love her. I am her body twin, and it’s SO good to see it get some love. The media has presented that the only loveable body type is lean, but there are plenty of men who are just fine with lots of curves and softness. Love for all body types!

Side note: When is someone going to get into maternity clothes for “curvy” girls? There is ONE site with maternity clothes that I can find after tons of research, and I’m so disappointed. It seems like a missed market. There’s been such a surge of sites for curvy girls (in love with Simply Be and Eloquii) but there are NO maternity clothes out there.

  15. Lex says:

I wear shapewear fairly often – it isn’t all the industrial grade Kim K butt tamers.
You can get lighter control items…
I wear little smooth shorts under my dresses to stop the dreaded chub rub! So yes, that is considered shapewear!

The tops of my thighs jut out a bit from my torso so wearing shapewear shorts under pencil skirts both gives me a slightly smoother line, it also stops me from grating my legs off from rashes and chafing. Win win!
    I love shapewear!

  16. Joannie says:

I don’t find the photo of Ashley in the black dress to be flattering at all. She comes off as rather stuck on herself.

    • BendyWindy says:

She’s walking in a fashion show.

    • Schnee says:

Models are told what look to wear on their face on the runway by the designer and his staff prior to running the show. It’s not up to the models.

  17. Kitten says:

I f*cking HATE shapewear and would lose my mind if I had to wear that crap every day, but to each her own. Ashley is a stunning woman.

  18. Sam says:

I can’t imagine doing spanx with any regularity. I have loathed it ever since I, well, sort of got “trapped” in a spanx slip and needed my husband to rescue me. Since then, I’ve been opposed with a passion.

    • LizLemonGotMarried says:

Oh, my goodness. I have to ask. Did he have to cut you out of it? I have a long-line body suit that I love under jumpsuits and form-fitting clothes because it smooths out bra lines, panty lines, and little “lumps” but getting it on/off is a PAIN. I refuse to do it in the same room as my husband, and he’s seen me giving birth and doing all sorts of gross things in private. Encasing myself in sausage skin is NOT something I want to share with him.

      • Sam says:

Lol, no, it didn’t get that far. I couldn’t get the slip down over my hips, so I tried to get it over my head. BIG mistake (never, ever try to pull shapewear over your head!). Basically, my arms got tangled over my head horribly and I couldn’t see and had to yell for him. He basically had to get my arms untangled and help get it over my head. I did think cutting might happen at some point, but he was skilled enough to not. And that was the end of my shapewear.

  19. Blairski says:

Love this video! Thanks for sharing. I especially love that it shows her running after the taxi, and dancing. Sexy AND active!

  20. Dolkite says:

I LOVE girls with sad eyes like hers. I’m not familiar with her and the link only showed her face, but my eyes popped when I saw a full-body shot. My god, those hips! She looks amazing.
