Note by Celebitchy: Thanks to reader Roz for sending in this scan from the London Times of Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe’s birth announcement!
It was easy to forget during the height of the Benedict Cumberbatch-Sophie Hunter Madness at the tailend of 2014, but the whole thing kicked off because Benedict and Sophie put their engagement announcement in the Times of London. It’s also easy to forget that they were not even the first posh British couple to announce their upcoming wedding in the Times during that same time period. Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe quietly announced their engagement before Benedict and Sophie, but Eddie and Hannah barely got a fraction of the attention. Mostly because Eddie and Hannah had been together for years and I never believed they announced their engagement as some kind of strategic Oscar campaign move, but maybe I’m wrong (because Eddie did win that year).
Anyway, Eddie and Hannah are so low-key and uncontroversial that I totally forgot that Hannah was knocked up throughout this year’s awards season too. She bumped-it throughout several awards shows and then as soon as Eddie didn’t have to do anything else in LA, they went back to London and waited for her due date. And Hannah has given birth to a girl! A girl they named Iris Mary Redmayne. Guess how they announced it? With a simple notice to the Times, yet again:
I bet Benedict Cumberbatch is kicking himself that he didn’t think of announcing baby Christopher’s birth this way. This is how truly posh people do it! They don’t have their publicist confirm the birth to People Mag. They just send a notice to the Times. That’s probably how posh Tom Hiddleston will announce the Tiddlesbaby too!!!
As for the name… I love it. I’ve always loved the name Iris. It’s old-timey but not cloyingly vintage/hipster. Plus, I just love the iris flower. My guess is that “Mary” is probably a family name, because everyone has a Mary in their family, right?
Thanks to reader Roz for sending this in!

Congrats to all.
What a nicely-handled birth announcement and a perfect name! No apples or saints or compass directions, just a lovely, classic name. Congrats to the Redmayne-Bagshawe family!
That’s such lovely news, amongst all the recent gloom and PR stunts.
Can’t wait for Fantastic Beasts in November. This gives them quite a few months to enjoy being a family before he has to hit the promotional trail.
A down to earth name
My aunt is named Iris. She celebtrated her 99th birthday last month.
It’s lovely.
Congrats to them!
Aww, I love it! Yay for babies!!
I love that it’s a simple but elegant name.
Personally, I don’t like the name Iris, but I love that it’s such a normal name. Iris Redmayne sounds nice.
Locke, I agree. I feel like it’s a very mature/old fashioned name, but it more than passes the Supreme Court test (or whatever the British equivalent would be), which is to say the name, while pretty, doesn’t detract attention from the qualities of the person associated with it.
We have a Supreme Court in the UK now too. We just need to catch up with your gender balance, as there is only one woman judge on it (Baroness Hale).
That’s a good name. Congrats to them.
Pretty name. Happy baby!
Love the name, glad everyone is doing well.
Congrats to them! Lovely name!
At least, they let the world know, some like his pal Jamie Dornan does not even confirm they welcomed their 2nd baby, or the sex or the name. Pathetic!
But happily advertise his wife’s album.
Wow, looks like you’re still the only site with this news! Way to go, Roz. Just in time for Father’s Day here in the U.S., too!
Congratulations!
speaking of baby name…
the announcement above baby Redmayne: Oscar Ragnar… now that’s a hugely strong name!
I love it though. I love his sister’s name too.
Look at mom’s last name — those kids are Scandinavian.
Aww this is lovely. Iris is a family name for me too, and I’ve always adored it.
Congrats to them. But low key – Not.
There were as many staged walking pap shot of a pregnant Hannah, as there would have been of a Kardashian.
Were they?
They all play the game, but out of the trifecta of super duper posh actors currently popular, Eddie is the only one who still hasn’t gone full famewhore, so good for him.
Seriously? I follow a lot of American and British gossip sites and I didn’t see one (just a sneaky pic of the two of them on the tube). So let me guess — bitter Cumberbitch? Or just a random hater? I usually don’t get terribly rankled by haters, but this is such a reach I had to roll my eyes. Eddie plays the game (he was a fashion model ffs), and he’s clearly no stranger to active campaigning, but his private life has been all class since the beginning. Get over it.
I like Eddie, but she is right. I remember some pics (they were in Paris) and those pics are ridiculous.
That reader doesn’t sound bitter. Your comment is strange. I think YOU sound bitter.
Lovely news from a couple that I like. Iris is a pretty name. My local Trader Joe’s has a lady named Iris working there, along with a Lily and a Rose, which I think is so cute.
Hyacinth Bucket’s sisters were Rose, Violet and Daisy ( one for UK readers maybe). Iris is nice.
Ha ha! “The Bouquet residence, the lady of the house speaking!” LOVE it. Thanks for the memory.
Iris is a lovely, timeless name. Congratulations to the new family!
Congrats to them.
And B had to announce it super publicly. He was getting eaten alive for the CBE nom at the time.
Cumberbatch didn’t announce publicly, did he? I know the birth announcement was embargoed for a few days. I don’t think they’ve ever announced or officially confirmed that his name is Chris, even. They’ve certainly been a lot more low key than Redmayne and his wife. God, if Cumberbatch had a put a birth announcement in the press can you imagine the outcry? People still accuse of him of famewhoring out his kid because the kid got papped one single time nearly a year after his birth.
People Magazine is pretty public. Also the birth registry found itself on tumblr if you look hard enough. It’s his name.
Congratulations to the new parents. They must be “over the moon”.
As for Cumberbatch (since he had to be mentioned in this thread), it doesn’t matter how he announced or not announce, people would have a problem. He announced his plans to wed in the paper and there’s a huge uproar calling him a fame-ho. Redmayne announced the birth of his child and it’s “awwww… this is how you do it”. What’s the difference?
Very sweet name. Congrats!
I’m not a huge fan of the name Iris. But for some reason, I’ve fallen in love with the name Mary lately. I never liked the name that much while growing up. It felt old-fashioned when a couple of my friends were named Mary. But it’s kind of come back around and feels new again, and this time around I love it. It’s a simple but beautiful name.
My daughter’s name is Mary, so thank you!
Iris Mary sounds lovely and also very British to me.
“My guess is that “Mary” is probably a family name, because everyone has a Mary in their family, right?”
Wow. I feel so basic now…
Haha! Same here (not)
I don’t have a Mary in my family and I’m fine with that.
Everyone from Ireland or of Irish descent does, I can almost guarantee that!
Not us, but you’d find a lot of Sarahs and Aarons!
We have two Maries in my family. Big Mary, my aunt, and Little Mary, my sister who was named after her.
I was sure they were having a boy, for some reason. Anyways, congrats to them!! They must be over the moon. Also, it’s Father’s Day here in Argentina, so Happy Day for Eddie!!
Because no one else had written on it at the time.
Eddie’s people will get on it. He and Hannah will be snapped pushing a pram on Primrose Hill soon enough.
Iris Mary Redmayne is a lovely name! Congratulations to Edward and Hannah!
