Scarlett Johansson is the highest-grossing actress of all time: yay or nay?

Here are some photos of Scarlett Johansson last night at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. She received the 2016 Renaissance Award, and she took part in a Q&A session. I can’t find the ID on this blue dress, but it just reminds me of the fact that I’ve rarely thought of Scarlett as a fashionista. This is such a “prom” look, mostly because I’m pretty sure the fabric is taffeta. I really don’t like this look at all, and I’m also not crazy about her hair these days.

Meanwhile, the big ScarJo news this week is that she’s the only woman in the top-ten list of highest grossing movie stars. She comes in at #10 on the list because of her Marvel work – The Avengers, Captain America and Iron Man. But she’s also getting credit for the wild success of The Jungle Book, for which she did voice work. Her career-gross is $3.3 billion, which makes her the highest grossing female movie star in the world. The second-highest grossing woman in the world is Cameron Diaz, who secured a place on the list at #19. You can read more about this year’s list here.

Many are wondering if Marvel is going to rethink their refusal to give Black Widow a stand-alone film now that Scarlett has been named the highest-grossing actress. Yeah, I doubt it. Marvel has no interest in doing a stand-alone Black Widow film because it would disrupt their He-Man Woman-Haters Party.

  1. Lucy says:

She doesn’t seem crazy about the dress, either. Anyways, this isn’t surprising, really.

  2. HeyThere! says:

I’m okay with this because highest grossing doesn’t equal most talented. I like her in some things, and I don’t in others. It’s hit or miss for me.

  3. OrigialTessa says:

Should huge ensembles count? Should I care about such a trivial piece of trivia? Probably not.

  4. V4Real says:

I thought it was already said that there will be a solo outing for Scarlet as Black Widow.

I don’t see why not. Didn’t her movie Lucy gross over 40 mill opening weekend? That’s a much better opening than her male counterparts have had on their films outside of Marvel.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I thought so too and I remember Kevin Feige actually talking about it

    • Mia V. says:

If there’s really a Captain Marvel movie in works, I doubt they will make one about Black Widow, Marvel is not the one to praise female heroes.

    • lucy2 says:

Lucy ended up doing over $400 million world wide, it was a big movie for her. Personally I didn’t like the movie at all, but I do like her as an actress.

And yes, back in May Marvel confirmed there will be a Black Widow movie.

  5. KJ says:

The dress looks like it’s been made out of a shower curtain. Marvel isn’t gonna make a Black Widow film because they don’t want to. Some of the excuses about carefully laid out timelines of their films that can’t be messed with were proven to be crap when they had no problem moving other films back to make space for the 100th Spider-Man film.

  6. HH says:

I wanted to see a stand alone Black Widow film, but that’s because I was caught up in the Avengers as a whole. I’ve recently rewatched Winter Solider and Age of Ultron, and while Johannsen as Black Widow is interesting, it’s not worthy of a movie. It definitely could be her script, but she’s kind of the weakest link out of everyone, including Elizabeth Olsen with that terrible accent.

    • als says:

Black Widow could be made into a great movie if Marvel wanted to, just like they did with the tedious character of Captain America.

Actually, the only stand alone of Cap was the first movie, Winter Soldier and Civil War (the most successful) are ensembles. They brought the entire Marvel universe to support Cap, that’s how much they wanted it to succeed. And they could do the same for any other character.
Thor 1 and 2 were also robbed of the luxury to have the entire MCU on their side and they were pretty bad. I see they are bringing bigger guns for Thor 3.

The only successful Marvel stand alone was Iron Man.
So, I really don’t believe in weak characters, I believe in characters Marvel wants to succeed.

      • HH says:

I agree that Marvel knows hows to make a movie succeed. However, making Captain America films include the MCU was also a setup for the entire Avengers franchise. Characters were introduced in Winter Soldier, that didn’t need to be setup for Civil War, AoU, and the upcoming Avengers movies. They couldn’t have used Iron Man for that because RDJ only signed on for 3 solo films. The Thor universe/world couldn’t have been used for Winter Solider, Falcon, and the end sneak peaks of Scarlett Witch and Quiksilver. Marvel needs characters that can build on each other to make Infinity War come together. They essentially have two “worlds” coming together in both space and outerspace. They have used Thor (and GoG, Avengers) to explain the otherworldly/outerspace stuff and the Cap franchise to round out the Earth characters.

I do think that Marvel could do a better job with the Black Widow character and could make a successful female-led film if they wanted to. However, I disagree on Johannson’s ability to execute it well. I saw Lucy and while it was a sleeper hit, I would say that’s do to the interesting story, and not her skill.

ETA: If Marvel is bold enough to do Ant-Man, Guardians, and Doctor Strange, I do think they could take a chance on Black Widow.

  7. Robin says:

She’s not a very good actress. She’s very wooden.

  8. Amide says:

But JLaw earned more than Scarlett in 2015 and 2016 so this is an interesting list.

Sigh, if only Emily Blunt had not turned down Black Widow. Why? Why?
But that’s the way it goes.
I dislike ScarJo – but hey maybe Scarlett the Sodastream Queen, can now make a donation to Oxfam charity after she shafted them last time!

    • crtb says:

I was thinking the same thing. She makes more that JLaw?

      • SamLT says:

This is lifetime earnings, ScarJo’s been in the business almost twice as long as JLaw so no wonder. She’ll catch up sooner or later.

    • Misti says:

So agree with you on Emily Blunt over one-expression ScarJo.
Emily how could you turn it down!!????????????

    • Nicole says:

Highest grossing is BO take. JLaw gets a bigger paycheck than ScarJo for sure and I believe is worth more. Also Jen has only been on the scene since 2010. ScarJo has been in movies since she was a teen. This figure is the BO take of all of her movies combined which includes all the MCU movies she is in. It’s a useless stat basically

  9. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

God that is an ugly dress and meh. I’m not really sure why celebs get credit for ensemble movies that would have sold whether they were in them or not.

It’s The Jungle Book, parents were gonna take their kids to see it whether she or any other person in Hollywood voiced it.

Tbh she’s straying into Zoe Saldana and Blake Lively territory for me. Lucky but not particularly gifted with a knack for completely ignoring genuine criticism and supporting terrible people and ideas.

    • Marty says:

She’s a classic case of Hollywood propping up white mediocrity.

      • Nik says:

What movies have you seen by her? From Lost in Translation to Under the Skin, she’s given several great performances throughout her career.

      • Marty says:

Our versions of “great” are vastly different.

  10. Mia4s says:

Pretty meaningless. 99% of her films are ensembles led by men that would have made the money without her. Lucy is the only one she can take credit for.

    • lisa2 says:

That fact seems to be going unnoticed. Scarlett has not had a huge hit on her own outside of Lucy.. and I went to to see that to support women. But the movie was not that great. Good concept but not good. I thought there would be lots of fight scenes. And there weren’t. Just her looking at people and making faces to show she was using her mind.

When you are in movies with a big ensemble and you are just a tiny part of that.. NO.

and it seems people are confusing Total Gross with How much she is being paid. Not the same thing.

    • SM says:

This is the question I have, what does the highest grossing actress mean? Juat that the movie she was in earned the most money? In this case that dies not say much considering there were so many characters in both avangers and civil war

    • lilacflowers says:

To be fair, the same can be said for probably 99% of the men on the same list. It is box office totals and the big blockbusters are what pulls in the people and the money. The top two are Harrison Ford, who is there for 4 Star Wars movies and 4 Indiana Jones movies and Samuel L. Jackson, who is there because of Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Iron Man, the Avengers, and Thor, The two of them have been see-sawing back and forth for the past few years with Ford recently taking the lead because of the recent Star Wars. Yes, they both have quality films on their resumes but they both have a LOT of films on their resumes and it is the ensemble films like Star Wars and Avengers that put them on top. Jackson will probably grab the lead again soon because he is in a lot of films coming out in the next year, including Kong.

The rest of the people in the top 20? Morgan Freeman. Morgan is in almost everything, like SLJ, but it is the large blockbusters, not the small quality films that put him here. Depp – the Pirate movies put him here, Finding Neverland certainly didn’t. Michael Caine and Gary Oldman, like Morgan, are helped by the Batman movies. Ian McKellan? Stanley Tucci? Stellan Skarsgard? Anthony Daniels? Large ensemble pieces like X-Men and LOTR, Captain America and Hunger Games, Pirates of the Caribbean and Avengers, and Star Wars helped them. Seriously, Anthony Daniels is at #15.

Moving down: Andy Serkis is at #22. Andy Serkis. Can anyone name a Serkis film that wasn’t a large ensemble?

What is notable about Scarlett being so high on the list is that she is quite young in comparison to others on the list around her.

      • SM says:

That’s what I was thinking. Like it should be groundbreaking that a young female is among the top ten actors pulling in the big bucks but that just means that ansable casts pull in the big money and it actually shows that females are underrepresented in the superhero/big budget pop corn blockbusters dominating the market.

  11. mme says:

With all the Blake lively news recently, I’m happy she’s doing better than Blake and Ryan. She’s probably richer than both of them too right? Anyone know their net worths? #Team ScarJo

On another note, I’ve never found her sexy. maybe because she’s a white woman with ass and titties and that doesn’t happen often so everyone is falling over to find her sexy. Regina Hall, Megan Good, Taraji all have similar bodies to hers and she still ranks higher on the sexy scale for most people.
Another nice thing is that I love her voice… in a world most women want to sound like the Kardashians with baby voices, I love that Black Widow, Olivia Penderghast, Hannah Montana, Selena (not Quintanilla), even Serena Van der Woodsen, Lara Croft, Rachel Green, Blue Ivy Carter’s mom and the lady that sang that “Hello” song all embrace their husky voices

    • Boo says:

Me too on your first observation. Ryan really messed with her head I think and has continued to take subtle digs, as has Lively.

I’m glad she followed her dream DESPITE loving him because he clearly didn’t value or respect her enough to let her even try. It’s all about him and his needs; that’s why he’s married to an idiot who is beautiful but still a freaking airhead.

Now look where Scarlett is – good for her. Way way way good for Scarlett. I’m happy for her. She wanted to try and she made it.

      • Dhavynia says:

I agree with you and if Lively gets a part in a comic book movie anytime soon then I’ll be laughing my head off because she’ll be following her hubby’s ex career steps.
I’ve always likes SJ and I think BL is an idiot with pretty face so call me biased

I think that dress is horrible and maybe she lost too much weight after the baby and her boobs sadly shrank too. The same happens to me when I lose weight except I don’t have much in comparison. I don’t care for fake ones but I’ll like to have some!

      • Lee says:

        @Boo

“and has continued to take subtle digs, as has Lively.”

Really? Lively should shut up once for all. She’s trying to follow Scarlett’s footsteps too, working for Allen, for example. And imo she is even more ambitious than Scarlett, just hiding it better, throwing at people’s face this domestic goddes image, which is so damn fake.

      • Lou says:

Subtle digs? When? Well, Scarlett’s digs were not subtle at all. She is out for revenge, apparently. The funny thing is that both Reynolds and Lively seem totally unconcerned. They have never mentioned her, not once. By the way, her breasts have not shrank. She had her gigantic, ridiculous implants removed. She looks better now.

      • teacakes says:

@Lou – you think Scarjo had “implants” removed? I wonder what surgeon gave her a boob job at age 12 then, considering her chest has been well in evidence since she was a tween – Home Alone 3, anyone?

    • anon123 says:

“On another note, I’ve never found her sexy. maybe because she’s a white woman with ass and titties and that doesn’t happen often so everyone is falling over to find her sexy”

For me sexiness usually is not in the looks/ the body but the attitude and how a person carries himself/ herself. It is similar to charisma, I think Scarlett is both sexy and charismatic even though objectively speaking her face is not classically beautiful.

    • mee says:

i think she’s quite beautiful. and her voice is sexy; if you saw Her she was only in it as a voice but her presence was magnetic and charismatic. i never thought much of her acting before but it was a good performance.

  12. als says:

Even if Marvel wanted to do it, I would be surprised if Scarlett wanted to be involved in a Black Widow stand-alone. She already gets huge amounts of money, her profile is way up there without her needing to take the promotional and critical heat of starring in her own franchise. And she has the time to still do diverse work.
Although she definitely likes the money, I doubt she wants to stay with Marvel forever.

  13. Marty says:

I don’t care for her at all, but seeing her thinification over the years is depressing.

    • Boo says:

Seriously, what happened to her breasts? I distinctly remember she had a very curvy body and rather large breasts… I don’t understand how she looks this way now. 🙁

      • KHLBHL says:

I thought she got implants early on to boost her career and then had them taken out once she hit a certain level of fame?

      • Jayna says:

My friend had beautiful natural big D cup breasts and went down to a very small droopy B cup after the birth of her first child. It was shocking when I first saw her in a bathing suit. I was so used to seeing her chesty in bathing suits.

A neighbor of mine isn’t particularly vain about most things kind of an all natural type woman, minimal to no makeup, but she was proud of her large natural breasts. Two babies in and she kept her full chest. The third baby, it’s like her chest disappeared down to a small cup size. She said she was depressed for a while, not expecting it.

Maybe Scarlett lost some of her breast size after the birth of her baby.

      • Jayna says:

@KHLBHL, Scarlett was kind of busty at age 16 and 17 when acting. I don’t think she went larger.

      • Lou says:

Jayna, I agree. She was busty when she was a teenager, but not as busty as she is in the picture with a red dress and Woody Allen and in a photo where she is holding hands with Reynolds, where her breasts are definitely unnaturally hypertrophic. I think she looks OK now. She is always very pretty and not a mean actress, but, to be honest, not a particularly good one, with the exception of A Love Song for Bobby Long, where she shines. However, it has been decided by the media that she is the next big thing and I suppose we must surrender to this. I must say, though, that I do not find her voice sexy at all, despite Her. When I hear her talk I think “For heaven’s sake, woman, clear your voice!”

  14. Ever says:

All I can say is: GET IT.

  15. kimberly says:

    A NAY from me.
Scarlett’s efforts have paid off VERY well I see. She was very desperate for that black widow role and campaigned really hard for it. I read somewhere that dyed her hair red just in time for auditions.
I agree with the the poster above who mentioned Emily Blunt.
She should count her lucky stars that Emily could not accept that role and that was partly because she still had a contract with Fox studios so she could not accept that Marvel offer even if she wanted it. 🙁

And with that being said, I am not interested in a stand alone Black Widow film. I think she is one of the weakest links in the avengers cast.
Give me a Captain Marvel film. I would pay to see that.

  16. Catelina says:

I’m surprised that so many people are calling her untalented- Lost in Translation alone puts her above many actresses for me. As for this title, it’s slightly misleading, because majority of her gross comes from marvel, which would’ve been successful without her. But if they’re going purely based on numbers and not perceived effect on numbers, then I guess it’s fair. Good for her.

    • Jayna says:

I don’t consider her untalented at all. I’ve enjoyed her in movies.

    • anon123 says:

She is one of my favorite actresses. I find her to be very interesting to watch on screen and I also like her personality – a strong, independent woman who works hard and forges her own path.

    • Sunsetsnow says:

I like her too. She is also one of my favorite actresses. She is sexy!

    • mee says:

yes, she was good in Lost in Translation too. I’ve read things about her as a person that may be off-putting but i think she’s a good actress.

    • Cheyenne says:

Lost in Translation was the only thing she was good in and that’s because she had a good director and was playing a bored character. When she has to show some big emotion she is dreadful,.

  17. KBeth says:

As an actor I find her very average. I don’t mind the dress, I agree…..her hair looks terrible lately.

  18. Misti says:

Unfortunate shower dress, clashing with shoes for Sean Penn’s soulmate here.
And going by this criteria, I expect to see Zoe Saldana in the top 15 next year!

  19. Ever says:

I think it’s kind of sad that she’s being dragged down for making money off the Marvel franchise. Yes, it got her on the list, and it should have because she’s a member of the cast. Why are we discrediting that? The list isn’t about her perceived talent, it’s about how much money she’s brought in through projects of her career. Good for her! It’s even sadder that there are only two women in the first 20 places. And let’s be real, she’s ( and other actresses ) most likely not getting the same contract and back end deals as her male counterparts. Why can’t she benefit just as much from Marvel as the men? She has a much more lengthy career than half of the leads; and will probably continue to get better work than most of them after the franchise.

    • Veronica says:

Yeah, I’m not going to complain about her being savvy enough to get involved in these films. She did it for the same reason Lawrence did in her starting years – franchises are the backbone of careers these days. I think most actresses would have been crazy not to take the deal if they had ambitions to make it big. It not only made her bankable but also significantly raised her media profile.

    • lucy2 says:

I don’t get it either. Pretty much everyone at the top of that last has had a big franchise that put them there.

  20. Kimbers says:

Proved that not all things expensive are worth what it.

  21. review says:

I don’t see why this ranking would make Marvel decide to do a stand-alone BW movie – she is on that list primarily because of Marvel films, so her ranking wouldn’t come as a surprise to them anymore than RDJ’s ranking would. This isn’t like she won an Oscar or suddenly raised her profile, someone just tallied up the box office totals and listed it out. And in general, I don’t know if there are a lot of MCU viewers who watch the films for her; many fans seem somewhat ambivalent to her portrayal, even if they generally want more female characters. I’ve even seen some commenters argue for a BW film only if the character is recast.

    • Anthony says:

Actually, they just did a ranking on one of those Marvel movie and comic book websites that shows that more than 47% (out of the entire cast) went to go see Captain America Civil War because she was in it. So that kinda kills your whole no one went to see the movie for her opinion. Oh, and most love her as Black Widow. She plays that role very well. Also, why on earth do other women live just to tear down other women accomplishments? Just be happy that the woman is the youngest and in the top ten on a list that is dominated by males. That’s a good thing, you know.

  22. Micki says:

    Good for her!

  23. Josefina says:

I like Scarlett and I think she’s very good as an action actress, which is the route she’s going for now.

  24. Veronica says:

She is stunning, but WHAT IS THAT DRESS? It’s like a bad Midwestern prom date affair.

I would assume a lot of her worth came from her involvement in the Marvel films, which goes to show just how smart she was to jump on that train. I doubt we’ll ever get a Black Widow movie, though, considering they wasted her backstory in a compressed side plot in the second Avengers film. It’s a shame because I think she does a really good job as the character, and I really loved what the plot line with Bruce Banner brought out of her, hinting at a woman with a very complicated relationship with her past.

  25. teacakes says:

So her MCU films made billions and people want to dismiss her because they’re ensembles, fine. But she led Lucy to $400 million plus worldwide as the first billed name AND with virtually no promo because she was almost ready to pop out a baby, and we dismiss that too?

I’m not super fond of her as a person (Sodastream) but she’s a decent enough actress and doesn’t seem nearly as tone-deaf as the likes of Lively though I realise that is a very low bar.

Oh and if she had a boob job she must have had loads of them starting by age 12 or so because (I’m the same age as her so I can say this without sounding like a perv) if you watch the movies she did as a teen, you can easily see the natural progression of size.

  26. Cheyenne says:

I agree with people above. It’s a meaningless list. I would like to see a list of the highest grossing actresses counting only movies they were the LEAD in. Julia Roberts might win that one, right?

  27. beauxblue says:

I give her props, she does the work and in the meantime she’s gotten married, had a child all low key, there are other ways for women to make a living in the entertainment field without having to shill all kinds of shady products or have tmz or some other rag on speed dial.
