Last year, Taylor Swift and Kanye West finally buried the hatchet. She introduced his VMA Video Vanguard thing, and they also had lunch together, plus he sent her flowers. They seemed totally fine with each other for months. Then Yeezy debuted his new album, The Life of Pablo, in February of this year. There’s a song called “Famous” on the album which includes the lyrics “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why, I made that bitch famous / God damn / I made that bitch famous.” In the immediate outcry and drama with those lyrics, Kanye insisted that Taylor was totally fine with it, that he sought and received her approval. Team Yeezy even said that Swifty got the joke. But Team Swifty came down like a hammer. This is the original statement from Taylor’s spokesperson to People Mag:
“Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.'”
Kanye would throw multiple hissy fits in the weeks that followed, and while I thought he needed to let it go, I also sort of believed his story. Because even in that first statement from Taylor’s spokesperson, there’s a contradiction big enough to drive a truck full of Yeezy sneakers through. Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian also took Taylor Swift to task in last month’s GQ cover interview, saying that oh, right, Kanye has the receipts on the phone call between himself and Taylor because he was filming a making-of-the-album documentary at the time and there’s video of the call. I was actually hoping that Kim and Kanye would show the receipts at some point. And I got my wish! Kim posted the video on Snapchat. Two part video of Kanye & Tay’s convo (NSFW for some language):

Wow, you mean Kanye and Taylor spoke at length on the phone and he asked for her permission and she gave it and even told him that he didn’t even need to ask for her permission? And she basically told him that whatever lyrics he wanted to use were fine? God, I love when my instincts are dead on the money. I love when the receipts are provided. As you can imagine, Taylor can’t just say, “You know what? This whole thing escalated from a simple misunderstanding.” Of course not. Not when her whole deal is being a Professional Victim. Not when she already had her spokesperson lie about it. So Taylor tried to play the victim again – the victim of character assassination. She posted this:

So now her story changes when she got caught in a lie. Now it was always an issue of being called “that bitch”? Now she admits that the lengthy (recorded!!!) conversation took place, that he sought her permission, but her issue is with “bitch,” even though she said in the phone conversation “Like I would never expect you to like tell me about a line in one of your songs.” And “I mean go with whatever line you think is better. It’s obviously very tongue in cheek either way.”

What receipts? The “I made that BITCH famous” line isn’t even audible in Kim’s video. Why wouldn’t Kim just snap Kanye explicitly asking about the bitch line? Why do it some roundabout way? The whole snaps are weird and obviously cutting some shit out of the convo. Why cut out the smoking gun?

You can consent to some things, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be okay to EVERYTHING. I think that’s a pretty basic concept. Based just on that one line, sure it IS tongue in cheek. I don’t know. Personally – I’d be more fine with that than “I made that bitch famous” or whatever. And that transcript – we don’t know WHICH lines she said she doesn’t mind, since conveniently the bitch part isn’t in that transcript. He could have said that same line worded two different ways -who knows.
Her wording is kind of awkward though – it’s not a case of “OH YES, this is PERFECT. DO IT.” There’s some hesitation in there at first.

Hasn’t her argument all along been that she had the call (true), she didn’t listen to the song (true, Kanye just sang one verse to her) and that he didn’t tell her about the “I made that BITCH famous” part (true again, and the only line she has ever publicly had a problem with). All she has said since the beginning has been proven true by the recording, so I don’t understand why Kim would post it as if it would destroy TS. People on this thread are so eager to destroy her that they don’t even realize that this just proves what she has always said was the truth.
The only lie she has been caught on, is that she complained to Kanye about the lyric saying it was misogynistic. So yeah, when she heard the actual lyric + saw the reaction she tried to get into the feminist bandwagon to legitimize her feminist image. I do find this quite hypocritical and I do believe Taylor is just a feminist when it comes to her own personal problems. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to her talk about the misogyny in society but to refer to how she’s affected by it, so it does seem pretty opportunistic to try and become a feminist spokesperson when you never speak out about it. But other than that, she has been pretty straight about this whole ordeal.
Kanye was totally deceptive during that phone call and straight up hid the most important part from her. How you don’t see this is beyond me.
If that’s the case, her public speech at the Grammys was misleading as hell. Taylor’s quote was about someone claiming your fame. At the beginning of this all, she simply could have that it wasn’t what she was expecting and she couldn’t approve of the final version. Instead she used is as a platform to create a version of the situation that simply isn’t true – the video does prove that. And people are calling her on it.

It does sound like she’s somewhat hesitant in the call and I think she regretted being accommodating afterward. Taylor seems to have this problem where she agrees to things and later backtracks and makes herself a victim. A lot of us (women) do that – try to be accommodating – but we need to learn to stop doing that, or at the least, not try to make ourselves a victim later.

I took a class with a professor (who used to be president of my Ivy League school) and he HATED it when we used like. Whenever we used that word, he’d call us out on it and tell us to speak proper English.
I spent that whole semester speaking very eloquently in his class and noticing how that word is interlaced in so much of how we speak. Whenever I’m talking to professors now, I go slowly and I’m much more aware of how I speak. =D
I don’t mind vernacular or non-standard constructions. It can get a bit classist if you police them all. But if you can’t get a sentence out without punctuating it with “like” every other word, you lose me.

I see that a lot, especially with teens. It’s very aggravating for me to hear it, because it breaks up language flow and rhythm. My attention starts to wander when people do it.
Yeah she sounded kind of dumb saying like all the time but I can’t stand people (especially men) who always wanna go after people who say like. Most people don’t say it even that often since they just use it as a pause in their speech to gather their thoughts or to recount a conversation without having to be verbatim in what was said.
If it’s not in a professional setting who cares if someone says like a few times?
Anna’s right. When I was a kid, we had a teacher who went nuts over “um”, the place-holder of the time. She actually humiliated one girl over it. One of the many reasons I hated school.

I spent a summer fining my children 25 cents per like one year. Two weeks of that and 80% of the problem disappeared. I’m satisfied with that — if their grammar were any better, they wouldn’t sound American.

@swak- Thank you for agreeing with me. When my students had to speak to me in reading group, every time they said “You know” I would start counting on my finger right in front of my nose. I would also wave a little as if I am conducting an orchestra. It would drive them crazy. I told them that if I am grading them on their speech (as you know—those blooming common core standards) they need to speak clearly and appropriately for a grade. If they drive me crazy with their nonsense, I was going to drive them crazy in return. If they didn’t want me to count in front of them, they needed to stop right away. I haven’t had a “like” or “You know” since. I just cannot get my friend to stop. She is totally out of control with it. I had a conversation with her on the phone for 15 minutes. She said “You know” 73 times. Yes, I counted.
I say to my kids – Is it like or is it actually ? Do you mean something similar or an approximation of the thing we are discussing or do you mean the actual thing?
They give me considerable eyeroll but I pretend to be naive and they realise that it is easier to speak accurately then have me ask the same things 10 times in every sentence

As I said above, I have no problem with vernacular, non-standard constructions, discourse markers or any other playing around with language. I do this all the time for humorous effect, as any commenters familar with me will know. This is not that. This is the inability to articulate even a single sentence without repeated retreat into pause mode.
Part of the reason is that if you stop talking for an instant, someone else will grab the floor unless you have higher status. Nonstop talkers have often just not been given a chance to talk normally. The male often directs the conversation with a female, deciding what topics are pursued and which are dropped. Somebody actually followed high school kids around to confirm this… But it matches my experience with many men also. Not that many strong silent types. They will take any pause as a reason to change the topic.

@Sixer, it’s something that annoys A LOT of people. You aren’t alone, and your issue is a valid point, I’m not saying otherwise. I love words and the way that language evolves and how every group seems to have slightly different slang, used almost as an indication of allegiance.
I do think its interesting that a verbal tic associated with young women only pisses off such a large swath of people and bears examining.

Excessive “likes,” vocal fry, upspeak, and similar markers seen primarily young, female voices are really railed against by large swaths of people and I think it’s appropriate to ask those complaining to take a step back and think about whether or not those complaints are used to silence female voices (this is a big issue on radio, even on NPR — listeners calling in because young, female voices are “annoying”)
Every other word is a lot. I think it’s especially telling for someone like Taylor, who is ON all the time. Who has a soundbite and a controlled statement all the time.
She knows this is a big deal. Do you think shes generally this level of inarticulate and her handlers make her sound smarter? Or is this because of the pressure and her image is starting to crack?

A really interesting series is The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. There are several in the series, all can be read independently. Among other things, the author talks about status and floor-holding in at least one of them. Male-female is only one of the status pairs where you see this phenomenon.
Sixer- I wonder if Taylor was just uncomfortable and wary. She might speak differently with her friends and family, for instance, or with professionals she trusts. Got the feeling she was trying too hard to be “the cool girl” and not being open about her real feelings. Kanye strikes me as a difficult conversational partner. A more skilled conversationalist might even have problems. My brother is often the same on the phone, jumping around and following his own tangents. Trying to get real information out of him is exhausting.

There’s nothing illegal about it. The call was recorded in NY and Taylor was in Colorado at the time of the conversation. NY and Colorado are one party consent law states.
It might not be illegal, but it is still not ethical to record and release something without the other party knowledge.
Lying is usually not illegal either, but I think pretty much everyone agrees that it is usually wrong.
In this case it was revealing the truth of what happened. Which is more inethical — getting proof that someone said something or someone lying about what they said later?
I think the daughter of the lawyer that got OJ off knew that Taylor didn’t have a leg to stand on when threatening a lawsuit.
I misunderstood and thought the call was made from a two-party consent state—my mistake, and apologies.
We still didn’t hear the b**** line in the song, so she’s in the clear on that one, but I find it bizarre she’d take issue with that and not the sex line. Regardless, Kim should post the whole recording.
Taylor would honestly be much better off at this point just saying she was hoping to hear the song one final time before it was released and was upset hearing it for the first time, rather than denying it all together. Clearly that’s not the case, and her Grammy speech now looks wildly manipulative. Blaming it on miscommunication would’ve been the easy way out of this, and she didn’t take it.
She basically lies about things, even when they don’t really matter. Or she manipulates by saying something that is the literal truth but which in no way conveys the full story.
An example is that she said she didn’t buy a house near the Kennedy compound. It turned out that this was literally true – but only in the sense that her management bought it for her. Vanity Fair found her out on that one.
And she backtracked to GQ last fall about whether Bad Blood was about Katy Perry (which she had previously strongly implied to Rolling Stone). I think we now know how true that backtrack was on the basis of what KP has tweeted over the last few days.

I think it’s fascinating to see how attached people are to one side of this or another. All of these very wealthy and famous people involved have a stake in the publicity this is generating, and it’s all about business. Taylor Swift has long played the aggrieved one in her brand, and the Kardashians will leverage anything for views, clicks and a buck. LIfe of Pablo has not done well, the Famous video was meant to a big viral thing yet no one really cared, and Kim has a show and digital properties to promote. Taylor’s trying to protect her brand and has been exposed with some of the mean-girl dealings she’s known for, and is parsing her statements. Sure, it’s funny to watch this being exposed, but Kim has her own PR/financial agenda in this.

Pepper – she references it, but there’s conveniently no recording of what he said the line actually was going to be, and she doesn’t say it word for word either. The part that went “Yeah, she does. It made her famous.’ Its more provocative to say ‘might still have sex…’ It’s doesn’t matter to me. ” made it sound like (to me) that he was choosing between two lines, and again, there’s no recording of how that line played out.
I get that she’s gotten herself into a hole with this one – but that recording IS missing a crucial part of the lyrics. And maybe she was okay with him saying “I made her famous” but not “I made that b**** famous.” we don’t know because we don’t hear either of them saying it.
But I’m also not of the mindset to think that someone who consents to certain lines/versions of a song automatically is going to consent to anything/everything.
@Erinn—Kanye is not my favorite person, but I can see how perhaps in a way both of them started off well-intentioned—she went along with his idea, and perhaps didn’t approve EVERY aspect of the song, and he took it as such. Even if that’s not what Taylor meant, she didn’t make that clear enough. I understand how he could’ve taken it as her approving of everything, because it sounded like a very casual, friendly conversation. Either she changed her mind and decided to use something she initially found funny to build up her image (which is weird, because she specifically says it would be funny for the media to try to create a fake feud between them), or something was not communicated along the line and she ended up hurt. Both seem like possibilities right now.
There are weird cuts in the video that make some of the quotes a little off, so I’m hoping Kim just releases the full video. Because as of right now we do not know that Taylor ok’d the “bitch” line. She sounds pretty adamant that she did not, so I’m wondering if the lyrics changed over time.

Yeah, it’s funny how Taylor is 26, but Kanye and Kim are closer to 40 and with kids, yet still participating in such immature behavior. Of course, Kim is an aging product and doesn’t have much shelf-life and Kanye’s rap game has seen its best days wane.

I doubt that either had Machiavellian intent. (Kim did…) They both could easily have walked away from the call with completely different ideas about what the other said.

It’s funny how many people were sure that Kim was lying and that she didn’t have the receipts when Taylor’s PR is known for using semantics to lie in their statements. Remember when they firmly denied that Taylor had purchased the mansion close to the Kennedy compound but then a Vanity Fair journalist quickly found out that somebody from her management team had purchased it for her? Or when she made it painstakingly clear that Bad Blood was about Katy Perry in an interview but months later she switched version? Her PR always uses this kind of tricks. Now they are holding on for dear life to the b word issue when it’s the less relevant part of this debacle. She knew of the“I made her famous” part because she acknowledges that Kanye didn’t know who she was before the VMAS.
This whole embarassment could have been easily avoided by ignoring the song but no, she had to use her Grammy speech to pontificate and paint herself as the victim.
I watched that Grammy speech again last night and I can see why Kimye came firing back.
I couldn’t quite make out the entire conversation last night, so the glaring omission of the b!tch line was what stood out to me. But if her publicist initially denied that Kanye sought her permission, then yeah she’s been busted in a lie.
But now that we have a transcript, it does appear that she knew he had a line about making her famous. If calling her a “b!tch” is the sticking point that caused her to do a 180 on Grammy night and shade him, then she’s deserves the calling out she’s getting. Even I know that “b!tch” is a common reference in rap music, so she shouldn’t be surprised that he put that in there.
I want to hear the whole conversation. Not just a series of short clips. Supposedly they talked for an hour.

Because it’s a common reference doesn’t make it okay. It’s pathetic that it’s a common reference to begin with. And if he told her the line in a different way, without that word used, then yes, she CAN be surprised by it’s inclusion.
I’m not saying it’s ok as it’s not a term I use or would be happy with being called. But she is ok with the tongue-in-cheek line of about him sleeping with her and the concept that he made her famous via th VMA awards interruption. She goes further to say that she’ll be playing along on Grammy night and surprising the press when she tells them she’s in on the joke.
Then, she pulls an about face and slams him at the Grammys for taking credit for her success. Even if she’ didn’t specifically approve his calling her “bitch” she still acted like a hypocrite and her speech at the Grammys is what has escalated this mess. Offstage, she could have truthfully stated what she did agree to and then said she wasn’t aware of being called a bitch and specifically called that out. Taylor handled things wrong from the get go by playing along as she did in the recording. Dissing him publicly at the Grammys was her choice and now she’s dealing with a PR nightmare and she tries to pull the victim card again. This time, it’s not working.
I think we are overlooking something very important:
Obviously from how she recorded the video from her phone via Snapchat, Kim decided to only post some segments and not the entire phone call, so there are gaps missing, which isn’t exactly fair.
Why record only certain segments and put it on Snapchat, of all places, rather than release the whole thing to E! of another site? Or why put it on snapchat and not instagram? Kim has both. And instagram has a longer video time limit.
That just looks sketchy.
Why is the “proof” video chopped up into pieces?

Kim could have posted the video in its entirety on Twitter without any cuts. If Kim really wanted the video out there for good, there are much better options than Snapchat.

If you read the last paragraph of the transcript, she did know he was taking credit for making her famous with his infamous 2009 VMA interruption and told him she’d be going along with it at the Grammys.

The extra-ness with Tiddles makes sense now. When Kim hinted/threatened that she had video proof of Taylor and Kanye’s phone conversation, Taylor all of a sudden saturated the media with all things Tiddles. She was trying to bury the phone call by giving the media something juicier. But Kim played that brilliantly. She waited for the perfect moment to do her big reveal. Once Tiddles’ lovefest became stale news, Kim released the video.
Honestly, if I were Kim, I would have raised a stink immediately after Taylor’s grammy speech. But Kim was patient. She let the post-Grammys Kanye-vitriol died down, she gave interviews and teasers about the “truth,” and she even waited until the Taylor love was dying down. Then she did her reveal. @Lilac KUWTK has been known to film things in the present day, and then edit it into episodes filmed a year ago. That’s what she did with the whole Swift thing, so there might be credence to Kim having major PR savvy after all.

Hi Lilacflowers, I believe Kim did everything in her power to get maximum publicity and viewership for herself and her show. And as Lynnie said, the K-Klan has been known to play with the timeline of their show for their own benefit. (See: episodes about her divorce.) You are correct in that her show was filmed quite a while ago – the Grammy speech occurred in February. So why didn’t Kim Kardashian release the video footage of the phone call then? Simple: they were waiting for a more opportune time. Also, networks often air episodes in a sequence that they see fit – often times that is not in chronological order.
There is a reason Kim has been in the press for what seems like ages. She’s milked her 15 minutes into a long-term career, and that’s because she is skilled at media and marketing herself. Girl knows how to stay relevant.

Kim’ tape does seem to be edited. Where is the part toward the end of Kanye talking regarding what Taylor is referring to when she’s responding to him? Kim edited it out. I, too, want to see the full conversation where the gaps are.

This is why it skips. Snapchat only allows 10 seconds per video. She didn’t care. She just reacted. Once the video stopped she posted and started another. Hence, gaps.
Somewhere the WHOLE tape exists. There is NO way Kim could have released that now.

@Erinn, I like your way of looking at her speech. All she did, in reality, was tell him it was perfectly fine to tell his story from his point of view. She never said it was right or that she agreed with him—just that yeah, from his perspective, he made her famous. He didn’t know her, and she thought that was fair.
I can understand why she’d be upset by the b**** comment in context of the entire line. He’s implying she owes him sex because he made her famous. What she first thought was silly and tongue in cheek became something a bit more vile with the full line. It was vile to start with and I don’t really get how she’d think it was funny, but I do understand how the two lines joined together sort of change the context.
It’s easy to come off like a super fan if you don’t have your pitchfork out, lol. I know people say she plays the victim a lot—to a degree, I see that and agree. Taylor strikes me as being really strong though. You don’t get to where she is by being meek. That lady could probably run MBA courses at Harvard on how to manage a career. So, given her strength as a businesswoman and person, I think she truly was okay with the weird lyrics (why, I have no idea though — the line about the sex sounds worse than the use of the “b” word).
Her people can run a class. She has a lot of talented and smart people behind her. That is what she pays them for, to not be seen or heard.

My problem with the lyric was never the use of the word “b*tch” or Kanye claiming he made Taylor famous. My problem with the lyric has always been the fact that the lyric implies that because Kanye made Taylor famous, Taylor now owes Kanye sex. I think that part is disgusting. No one is ever “owed” sex, no matter what a person did for them. The fact that Taylor said she thinks that line is a compliment makes me angry and sad. I was a fan of hers, but that’s just gross and really put me off her.
Still not on Team Kim or Team Kanye, though. They are both petty af and I dislike that.
I’m more disturbed that they recorded her and then made the obvious plan to release the recording at some point. That’s scary disgusting to me. Who does that? And Kanye even said their friendship was more important than any song? While recording her! I know people want to hate on Taylor for being obnoxious but what Kanye and Kim did was downright pathological. If they did it in California, let’s hope LAPD knocks on their door. They’re such garbage people. I don’t even gaf that Taylor’s a liar. That was a given to me.

I would be furious. They were playing her. And Kim is ignoring the part that Taylor back then said was a problem, the “Bitch” I made you famous part. We can see gaps in the video happening. What is Taylor responding to at times? What did Kanye tell her?
Obviously, the sex part, which she said was okay, and which in the article I read from back then she didn’t complain about. It was the other line.
She is somewhat shady, I agree, downplaying her part in that phone call before regarding their discussion of the song and knowing a lot more than she previous let on and down with it, but so are the Kanyetrashians releasing an edited tape.
KatyD, totally agree. Recording it was really creepy. There are a lot of other ethical ways to protect yourself rather than this. They are really awful people. Whatever with Taylor, leave her alone K&K. Tay is far from perfect, but its odd that K&K are so obsessed with her.
They’re in the studio, with Rick Rubin and some other people. Most likely it was being filmed for archive/documentary purposes. Most pop stars these days, including Taylor, film their studio sessions, if for no other reason than it’s helpful when the inevitable ‘stolen song’ lawsuits pop up. It’s also good for adding into music video’s, tour video’s, makings of and so on
Quite a bit of footage of Kanye in the studio chatting with people, writing etc. has been released, it’s not like he just recorded this conversation, it seems he had cameras there a lot.
His studio recording practices do not make it ethical to record telephone conversations without telling the person on the other side of the phone. People should always be told they are on speaker and who is in the room and they should always be told when they are being recorded because: ethics.

I know very few in business who don’t record all their calls. For the most part, it’s for reminders and/or transcription, but it is beyond common and not illegal in any state. Where legality comes into play, is what you are or are not permitted (State by State) to do with said recordings. KK would not have released them against legal council, so I’m guessing it’s perfectly legal in CA. I record 75% of my business calls. It’s a very common practice.
Anytime I’ve had phone calls with companies it is clearly stated that the phone call may be recorded. While they may have been taping the studio session, they could have turned off the camera during the phone call. Just saying. I truly think they, Kanye and Taylor, are both in on this for PR reasons. My question is, why did this not come forward at the time it all happened? If it was legal for them to record it, then there should have been no problems releasing it at the time it all happened.
I agree Lilacflower–they come off as creepy recording her like that. I think they were always planning to use this. It’s no innocent recording–because they record everything in studio–what BS. They’re nothing if not calculating when it comes to fame and staying in the spotlight. They’re invested in her personally and Kanye’s sexual lyrics about her and video of her nude are also deeply disturbing. What Taylor did is not as bad.

They might have wanted to protect themselves in case she lied (which I guess is what happened), but could they have foreseen the Grammy speech Taylor would make or that she would claim that she cautioned Kanye against using a song (she apparently hadn’t heard yet?). Some of the stuff Taylor did too was unpredictable so in a way I don’t see how they could have planned on using the call later, unless it was for a documentary.
What you are most disturbed by has been explained. Kanye records everything he does while he’s making an album. Thus, when he called Taylor DURING the making of the album, the call was recorded too. Taylor’s just mad she got beaten at her own petty game. And let me be clear: she is so petty even Tom Petty wants a name change to avoid being associated with her.
Her argument doesn’t have legs, since now especially she’s trying to isolate everything around the word “bitch,” though she thanked him for calling her for approval on the lyrics, told Kanye he needn’t ever do so and just to go with what feels right to him, and even gave him the suggested wording for “might have sex” with her! It was “tongue and cheek” to her and she was “in on the joke.” She loses big this time today.

I think that if I was talking to a high-profile celebrity known for twisting things to make themselves look like a victim, I’d be inclined to record the call if it was legal to do so and the subject matter was provocative enough. He was covering his ass in case Taylor decided to try and shade him (which she did) and twist the narrative into her being a victim (which she did). It was a smart move on his part.
I’m Team NO ONE in this mess, but can’t help but clap for Kimye for the way they one-upped the pop princess and exposed her hypocrisy.
Uh, no. When you call someone and you are recording them, they have to be told the phone conversation is being recorded. What he records in his studio with everyone around is his business if people can see he’s recording them, but once you are on the telephone and you didn’t let that person know you were recording them, it’s illegal or certainly can’t be used for legal proceedings, like court. Now can a this recording be released to the pubic, an edited version, no less, and be legal? In my state, it’s a criminal offense. Taylor’s attorneys say it’s illegal.
@Jayna You don’t have to tell someone you’re recording them, if you’re in a one-party state (or if they are in a one-party state). This is actually a legal issue, not one where you can just make up the rules depending on whose side you’re on. And much like TMZ, Taylor’s attorney is as reliable as a water-logged tampon. I’ll wait until the real facts come out to start shouting “illegal,” as though I were LeAnn Rimes.

Apparently, Kanye documents all of his studio time for a possible documentary in the future. Also, as someone above stated, it was filmed in NY, which I guess means it’s legal.

I don’t think this clears or condemns either one of them. It’s the same story, told from two different perspectives. Kanye thought she cleared whatever he wanted to say, but she just said she was ok with the one line about might have sex. I am with you on the song is disgusting misogynist part… however I think Taylor should have shut the whole thing down before it turned into what it is now, but she cares way too much about her image. So to have Kanye West call her up and say he wants to include this line that is about her, directed at her, in his song was probably too much to say no to at the time. In a sense isn’t it another form of crossover for her? She goes from country, to pop, to hip hop? But she should have either said no on the phone, or at the very least, told him something like, when you have the line, send it my way. But knowing how Taylor vacillates she probably would have approved it either way. The problem for Taylor, I think, is that song has come out when Kanye is in a bit of a creative and professional slump. His life is a mess, and Taylor doesn’t do messy. That’s more or less what I see here. She approved some things, but was not informed or didn’t consider how it might be taken further. Neither party is completely wrong or right.
But she also explicitly said she didn’t need or expect Kanye to inform her or run things by her.
I focused on the absence of the “B!tch” line last night, but now that I’ve seen the whole transcript, it’s clear that he must of read the line about making her famous, because she comments on it in the last paragraph. I can’t feel too sorry for Taylor when she voices support for both lines over the phone, says she’s going along with the joke at the Grammys and then shades him publicly. Centering her argument around the use of the word “bitch” isn’t enough the justify it.

I think Kim edited the audio the way she did because the version he presented her was probably more lighthearted, not I made that bitch famous. I don’t see why Kim edited out what Kanye said each time. It doesn’t absolve Tay Tay at all. She fudged a lot of truth, but then again, Kim edited it to their advantage leaving out a lot of Kanye’ parst, the parts Taylor was responding to.
Taylor is having a bad week. The problem is that Taylor and her team made it sound like she didn’t hear any of the song and that Kanye only wanted her to promote it. Well, this was proven wrong. I’ve suspected for a while now that Tay has full-blown narcissistic personality disorder… The victim complex + the intense manipulation of her image and situations + lurking constantly on tumblr for validation + unable to let anything go + her squad of “special” people who are all mirrors of herself (but none more special than her). Listening to her drop facts about how many records she sold is either her trolling him or serves my theory. My issue with this situation is her trying to claim she never wanted to be part of the narrative–maybe not initially, but she milked it for all that it was worth. And notice that her initial response to those lyrics has nothing to do with how gross they are from a feminist perspective, just that she’s worried about overexposure.

It’s well-established they’re all assholes who crave attention. But Taylor did lie and they had the receipts. They waited for the perfect moment and here we are. It’s good gossip. Taylor not only allowed him to say whatever he wanted, she later went on stage and made it all about her being a victim of bad Kanye again while accepting an award that is making her unique. She cannot let it go either, not even when it’s time to celebrate, it’s tough luck for her that Kim and Kanye don’t let go either. Fair is fair.

Well I’m not surprised when I heard Kim’s version I believed her to an extent. And so she provided the receipts while the hoopla is entertaining at the end of the day ‘Famous’ sold nothing. The music video was absolutely mysogonistic and deplorable and cost 600 grand. Kim has no actual talent and Taylor still wins. Taylor will release some ear worm hit about this and sell the f**k out of it and win all the Grammys you just watch.
Taylor cannot win this one. She lied about the phonecall, simply as. You can argue she has a point about the lyrics but it’s nitpicking to save face at this point, usually she has the upperhand completely. If she’s not on top, Taylor is losing, that’s her own mindset about being successful. Kim and Kanye have the advantage over her which is why she clearly didn’t consult her PR team and let that note loose on social media, it looks sloppy, panicked and weak. Taylor’s weakness is that she wants to be liked and overly controls her image because of it, Kim just wants any fame so she doesn’t need to be liked. She’s more infamous which is perfect when you’re fighting your petty battles on social media. Not so much for one of the most powerful popstars in the world. Get it together Taylor.
Second, Taylor being exposed for her blatant lies, manipulative scheming and victim narrative doesn’t mean Kim and Kanye aren’t assholes. People who are now ‘fans’ of the latter because of this, cannot process a complex situations in which neither person is the winner. Somebody just took a punch to the gut but it doesn’t make the puncher a hero, or heroes in this case.
Third, if anything, Kim is proving to be just as smart as Taylor because she sat on that recording, she hoarded it until it was relevant (for their show). She gave a snippet of what’s to come with that GQ interview. She Beyoncé’d Taylor! Also, in the recording, smart businesswoman Taylor speaks like a people-pleasing 13 year old who doesn’t know her words. Mentioning the Instagram likes of Kanye’s flowers cements it for me that she truly craves any attention no matter how superficial and meaningless. She KNEW she was getting overexposed yet she couldn’t help herself allowing Kanye to namedrop her. She couldn’t help herself to stay in the spotlight after her tour. She can’t help herself selling her new relationship right the second after she splits from her ex. Taylor is like Lady Gaga levels of thirsty for fame and only public humiliation or lack of sales/popularity will bring her back to earth and make her step away from the spotlight. Even Gaga doesn’t sell her personal life like this. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. No pity for either party!
Lastly, this is such a typical Hollywood game exposed. Both pretended to be friends with each other for attention. They disrespected each other. They lied. And now it’s all revealed how petty and insecure these people are, all for fame. Why do people even want to be famous at this point? You have to be a sociopath to like this type of scheming and backstabbing. Like, what a ‘great’ life these celebs have…Just wow.

Problem is that Taylor has been taking a PR beating since the Calvin debacle and I don’t know if her fragile ego can handle taking a breather from the spotlight. She must let people know she’s still that sweetheart, the victim. I don’t think she could ever cope with people seeing her flaws. And the fact that even celebs took a swing at her (Pharrell, very unusual move for him!) just tells me many more probably dislike her ass and her power lost a bit of its shine.

Just to clarify again; recording phone calls is very common and not illegal. What one does with said recordings is where legalities can become involved. I hate defending KK, but she was well within her legal right to release those recordings, at least in CA. What is NOT legal however, is defamation of character which is exactly what TS did when she called KW a liar about the phone call not happening. So you see: recording calls = not illegal; defaming a public figure = illegal. Are we clear now on who did or did not do something illegal?
California is a two party state so it is illegal if Swift didn’t know. However, he recorded in NYC and Mexico in addition to CA.

Exactly. If something happened after the call, that’s fine, and it’s fair to be mad about that. She foolishly took an entirely different route, perhaps after his song got such a backlash. Maybe she liked it, but when she heard the full song or found out her fans didn’t like it, she changed her mind. Again, if that was the case, she could’ve just said so. She could’ve easily said, “You know, I was fine with the lyrics about me on their own, but it context of the whole song it made me uncomfortable.”
Basically, my problem isn’t that she ultimately didn’t like the song. She’s allowed to change her mind, or feel hurt, or whatever. But she gave him the freedom to write about her in any way—including calling her names, as Kanye often does in songs. So she’s allowed to have any emotional response she so pleases, but she also needs to own up to the fact that she allowed it to happen.
And somewhere Katy and Calvin are sending Kim a bouquet of flowers.
Also, Swifty can go out and hit someone, while it is being recorded and people will still make excuses for her. Taylor might not believe Ye has made her famous, but he continues to help.

My mind keeps going back to this interview with Katy Perry where she talks about every pop-star’s brand. She said that everyone deliberately plays a role and they are all characters. Kanye is the villain, Taylor is the sweetheart. I think this is what is happening here.
Look at Beyonce. She has never hidden behind this made-up, America’s sweetheart persona. She is fierce, unapologetically black, is the voice of the nation, talks about political issues and doesn’t care about what people think of her. All popstars are calculated but I think Taylor played the “awww….I am this poor, sweet girl who gets her heart broken and I surround myself with thin, white, perfect friends” for far too long. I don’t dislike her. I am just trying to make sense of why people are loving this drama. Her whole brand has been about getting heartbroken and writing revenge songs. So much so that her fans can even find the boy she wrote a song about by carefully investigating the linings and the content inside her album CDs.
She is not what she projects. She also slut-shamed Camilla Belle in a song after Joe Jonas dumped her by calling her an actress who is only good at things you do on a mattress and when she was asked about it in an interview, she didn’t apologize or anything, she shrugged it off as something kids go when they get their hearts broken.
If Katy Perry is about bombshell, bubblegum pop then Taylor is about being the romantic who is always heartbroken and never does the wrong thing and that others are out to get her.
One critic truthfully pointed out that she can’t sing well live and was off-note at an award show and a few months later she released the song Mean specifically for that critic and included lyrics such as “a liar and pathetic and alone in life and mean.” I know a lot of stars do that and it seems like it’s no big deal but Taylor just cares waaaayy too much about her image and always playing the victim and doesn’t have thick skin at all…no matter how successful she gets. I think this obsession with always being on top of the narrative and this obsession to create this cute, apple-pie, all-American girl image made people turn on her, finally.
It hard to believe that people are supporting Kanye West, a legit misogynist and that fame-whore Kim over Taylor but Taylor is to blame too.
She will probably do a photo-op with Tom later this week, probably more hand-holding and kissing to prove that they don’t care about this at all.
I think Taylor should just take a break for a while and let this go.
PS-Peope are saying on Twitter that this is just God punishing Taylor for winning the VMA award Beyonce deserved in the first place….LOL…;P
I agree with all of this.
I think it’s clear Taylor needs to revamp her image. She’s almost 27 years old, and I thought she’d moved past this point in her life when she started with her 1989 era. She really seemed different—like she wanted to put herself in the media narrative the way she wanted to be scene, instead of being painted as the weepy victim of her exes. And I respected that. But it’s clear now that she hasn’t really changed, and all that media criticism she used to get is bubbling over once again, as warranted as ever.
There are worse things she could do. I think she’s probably a decent person who is lovely to her fans, and puts out catchy music. She has worked hard to get to where she is, and that’s great. But she really needs to take a look at her behavior and do some growing up.

I think does reveal that Taylor was much more consulted and approving and in the know than what she and her team led everyone to believe. Taylor’s team made it seem like there was a call but that Kanye just called to beg her to release the song on her Twitter and Taylor was kept intentionally in the dark about lyrics. She’s instead telling him to use whatever line he feels is best and giggling throughout about how this is going to play and how she’s going to shock everyone on the Grammy red carpet revealing how she knew and approved the entire thing.
Taylor is PR savvy enough to have realized that once the song was out and everyone was immediately outraged on her behalf the original Gotcha! plan for the Grammys was no longer going to be effective PR for the TS brand. But there was a different opportunity with a different approach with all the backlash. Seems like she basically flipped the script on Kanye knowing she’d be believed over anything he said after. Blindsided him by playing the innocent wronged victim who once again rose above it all to triumph and intentionally downplayed her prior knowledge and involvement. Baller PR move on her part. I just think everyone involved are all pretty much in the same boat of willing to use and screw over whoever they want for profit and PR.
I think you could be right. Perhaps she initially was as completely happy and fine with the lyrics about her as the phone call implied, but when the public automatically felt enraged on her behalf, the switch flipped and she decided to take that avenue instead.
Weird thing is, she sounded genuinely excited about telling people on the Grammy red carpet how the joke was on them and she totally approved of the song.
No one comes out of this looking particularly good, and the song is gross whether she approved or not. That said, this lie of Taylor’s kind of makes you wonder what else she hasn’t been forthcoming about, eh? I don’t dislike her—I think she writes good music and has plenty of nice qualities. But this is beyond shady and in many ways validates why people take issue with her.

I’m just laughing at the twisting and turning.. I remember when those Sony emails came out. Those people didn’t authorize them to come out. Some of the people up in arms about Taylor being recorded had not problem with reading those emails and commenting on what was being said in them. Now why is that different. There were quiet different comments and takes on that. Perhaps some need to go back and read the things they say about other celebs but have a different view when it is about their faves.

I need to track down a timeline of all this nonsense, but basically she’s only guilty of lies of omission—”Kanye West ALSO asked her” indicates that the main conversation was indeed about the song—maybe not for APPROVAL, but to give her a heads up (also true, because of semantics). It also seems correct that she never heard the b**** line, at least not in Kim’s Snapchat of the conversation. So, crafty lies of omission. It reveals a lot that she stomped on Kanye after seemingly approving of him taking credit for her fame (from his perspective), but she didn’t outright lie in that statement. She may have lied in previous ones, I can’t keep track. But that was all truth. They’ve exposed nada based on that statement. Taylor’s butt is well covered in that clarification.

The tape suggests Taylor heard the “I made her famous” line but there’s no evidence Kanye used the word bitch. However, I’m not buying that she was A-OK and then flipped 180 degrees due to that one word. So I’m guessing one of these three things must have happened:
1) After getting off the phone and mulling it over she changed her mind. The more she thought about it the more his lyrics offended her. Or perhaps after she actually HEARD the song she changed her mind. In that case she should have called him up and told him her change of heart.
2) She was never REALLY OK with the lyrics but she tried to act cool and over accommodating. The way she over praises Kanye for taking the time to call her up makes me think this is a real possibility. Once again, she should have woman’d up and told him.
3) After the song was released she noticed the outrage on her behalf and tried to exploit it. Hopefully 3) isn’t true because that’s cold blooded. 1) & 2) are understandable and human reactions but 3) isn’t.

I think these really well thought-out, reasonable theories. I agree that options 1 and 2 would be human (her fault for not speaking up sooner, but human nonetheless), while option 3 is…alarming.
Though I have to say, she sounded pretty genuine on the phone in a way that leads me to believe 1 or 2 are the more plausible options. She sounded like she trusted it would be a cool idea at first and was game for it, but then perhaps after thinking it over/talking to her family/team, realized it wasn’t so great after all. Which is normal, and happens all the time. But in any case, it wasn’t right for her to imply in her speech he wrote it without her knowledge. Someone said that Kanye’s people clarified that the lyrics DID change after he spoke with her, but I don’t know if that’s true.
At the end of the day, all three of them need to grow up and let it go. Kanye used Taylor to write a controversial line, Taylor used Kanye to build up her girl power image, and Kim used both of them to get better ratings. None of this is a good look, and no one should be praised.
I think any one of those theories is possible. #1 and #2 are understandable if afterwards she realized she wasn’t ok with what he’d written. She should have contacted him right away and told him so. #3 would be downright mean. She handled it poorly at the Grammys.
Makes me glad I don’t have people in my life that would a) write that kind of misogynistic sh!t and have the audacity to ask me to approve it or b) do an about face and slam me publicly without talking to me in private first. I wouldn’t want to know any one of them.

Kanye called her up and asked for input and approval. He’s really nice to her on the phone, tells her he wants to be friends and wouldn’t want to do anything to disrupt that. If she had a problem, she could have called him and said so. Instead she blindsided him very publicly. She’s allowed to be offended, but there was no reason for her to call Kanye out without trying to resolve it with him first.
Plus her Grammy’s speech wasn’t about being called a bitch, it was about Kanye taking credit for her career. Yet she was almost giddy over the ‘made her famous’ line and insistent that Kanye should use it.
I’m sorry, I’m stuck on Taylor’s “I’m in debt” statement. I’m not shocked and I’m glad they had the foresight to record this conversation.
Are we sure that part of the transcript is Taylor and not Kanye? I also can’t picture her saying she has “concepts.”
There’s wiggle room here where the interpretation of how her intent is meant. I can see her being angry about the bitch line not just for the use of the derogative but the implication that her career wasn’t her own. This being said, what she DOES deserve criticism on is how she portrayed Kanye in the resulting fallout. Stating that she felt he took a mile when she offered an inch or that she felt hurt by what he ultimately chose to use is one thing, but the implication with her later statements is that he was completely apathetic to her feelings…which this does not show. This suggests a certain amount of empathy and consideration on his part, which is really where I think she deserved to be called out.

Well, with all the volatility in the world today whether it’s Nice, France or Istanbul, Turkey it brings a type of relief to be interested in Taylor Swift’s integrity or lack thereof! Having read the transcripts, watched the video, followed the Calvin-to-Tom saga, I have to say I’m FIRMLY in Taylor Swift’s camp. Let’s start first with Calvin – he is and was not a supportive partner (which has also been shown to be the case in his previous relationships, he seems to have a BIG issue with female empowerment). I think trust for Taylor was broken when he refused to accompany her to awards ceremonies because his precious ego couldn’t take it. Next – Kanye West is mentally ill and personally I think it IS worse to suggest that he “made her” than that he slept with or wanted to sleep with her – the latter can be taken as some sort of back-handed compliment, but the former … to tell the world that he “made that bitch” when, I’m sorry, she works her socks off, has written a heck of a lot of songs and consistently puts out more successful concert tours not to mention rolls out more number 1 hits than he can ever dream of, on what planet does this misogynist reside? As for Kim weighing in NOW, whatever. She is made up of media flotsam and jetsam with her 15 minutes long over, but fair play to her to managing to keep herself in the public eye. Taylor Swift plays the media, of course she does, but it’s a pretty manipulative place out there and she manages to come out fighting every time. I for one like her and hope it works out with Tom.

KK, KW and TS irritate me to no end but from the original interview KK did say they record everything in his sessions and don’t just stop when people are on the phone so I think not only she heard but anyone in the recording session heard the conversation as well.
