Lena Dunham apologizes for ascribing sleazy thoughts to Odell Beckham Jr.

wenn23818287

Years ago, I figured out my issue with Lena Dunham. I diagnosed her with a condition of “Special Snowflake Syndrome.” I defined this syndrome as someone (Lena) who has been told repeatedly that her every thought, word and action was and is brilliant, groundbreaking and important. Special Snowflakes don’t do well when they are not constantly being praised and told they are special. Special Snowflakes hate it when their motives are questioned, when they are told that they made some kind of error, or when they are told that their “cute” personal stories are not all that cute, but rather creepy, inappropriate and borderline abusive. Keep this in mind.

On Friday, Lena’s latest Lenny newsletter came out. I saw the headline before I skipped out of work ahead of a holiday weekend – the headline was “Lena Dunham interviews Amy Schumer.” My thought? “Pass.” I didn’t even look at it at first. Dunham and Schumer are cut from the same cloth, and over the past year, Schumer has come to occupy the same oblivious-white-feminist space that Lena used to occupy for a time. I already knew that the interview was going to annoy me, so I put off reading it. You can read the full piece here – I sincerely do not care enough to excerpt all of the controversial and/or stupid stuff from their conversation. But we can talk about the biggest “highlight,” which is the part where Schumer and Dunham discuss how much they hated this year’s Met Gala, which they both attended willingly.

Dunham: You and I were literally sitting across from each other at the Met Ball… it was like a crazy countdown to when we could escape. You were like, “We’re honored to be here. We’re honored to be here.”

Schumer: I left so early. When did you leave?

LD: I attempted to grind my ass on Michael B. Jordan for an additional twenty minutes and then left right after you. I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, “That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.” It wasn’t mean — he just seemed confused. The vibe was very much like, “Do I want to f–k it? Is it wearing a … yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.” It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, “This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.”

AS: You were dressed like a boy, and you looked sexy, and I really appreciated you showing me your t-ts several times.

[From Lenny]

As Jezebel pointed out, some of this section – the Met Gala section – has undergone a rewrite from email to blog post, with the Michael B. Jordan stuff taken out of the blog post. As Jezebel also points out (along with everybody else), Lena is SO g—damn problematic, it’s difficult to even find a decent start point. Let’s start with the obvious: she decided to ascribe some pretty sleazy, misogynistic motives to Odell Beckham Jr. just because he didn’t want to talk to her, or didn’t pay any attention to Our Lady of Special Snowflakes. Many believe there’s a racial element too, mostly because of Lena’s long history of non-intersectional white feminism.

So, Lena got dragged on Twitter throughout Friday and Saturday. Some of her racist tweets from four years ago re-entered the public sphere. Since Lena loves nothing more than attention, she tried to double-down and not apologize, tweeting: “My story about him was clearly (to me) about my own insecurities as an average-bodied woman at a table of supermodels & athletes. It’s not an assumption about who he is or an expectation of sexual attention. It’s my sense of humor, which has kept me alive for 30 years.” She still got dragged. So finally she apologized:

“I have no idea the kind of day he’s having or what his truth is…” And if she had known about his day or his truth, then it would have been totally cool for her to ascribe those sleazy, misogynistic motives to his actions, actions that were basically “I don’t know her, whatever.” She still seems to believe she has a right to some explanation for why he didn’t pay attention to The Most Special Snowflake In The Entire World, doesn’t it seem that way? Oh well. At least she gave some small acknowledgement that she was wrong. And incidentally, THIS became the controversy rather than the part of the interview where Lena and Amy are defending Amy’s continued employment of a male comedian/comedy writer who has some particularly nasty thoughts about rape victims.

You went to a major fashion event and didn’t enjoy being there because you aren’t a model. Get over it, privileged twat.

    • LA says:

I cannot get over their dragging of the Met Ball. Their attitude is pure entitlement and privilege. If you didn’t like it, realize how lucky you were to be invited, just simply say it wasn’t for you, and don’t go again. No need to be so thankless to your hosts, and in Amy’s case I think she went as a designer’s guest, which makes her complaining extra rude.

      • Emily says:

Yes. I’ll be interested to see if they show up next time. My guess is these “special snowflakes” can’t resist a chance to have any attention on them, even if they “hate” it.

      • Bridget says:

Everyone goes as a designer’s guest

This wasn’t Lena’s first Met Ball, and she knew what to expect. To me that should have been an opportunity to network, it’s not like it was your BFF’s 21 run. Even then she attended with friends!

      • Lama Bean says:

They won’t be invited again. Nuclear Winter will not take kindly to the diss.

    • kanyekardashian says:

I get your point, but watch the slurs. ‘Twat’ is a misogynistic word for female genitalia. Don’t align yourself with the patriarchy and label women with slurs. Be bigger and better than that.

      • Kiki says:

But she is. Why do we have to be so correct about everything?

      • marley says:

        @kanyekardashian
Really? Watch your slurs? Have you recently used the word dumb, stupid or idiot? Have you said ‘this sucks’ – have you? Be honest. Because….

Congratulations, you’ve said slurs aimed at disabled, mute people, etc. AND misogynistic sentiment with ‘this sucks’…

If you don’t do the whole change, don’t bother representing it. This pick-and-choose morality is BS. And you’re repping the BS right now.

      • CTgirl says:

It’s not my favorite word but it certainly fits this situation and Special Snowflake. She is not just a horrible example of a young woman who mistakenly thinks that being a feminist is centered on saying “vagina” without blushing but she’s a horrible human being. She knew there was a guy from her college getting all kinds of unwarranted heat as the “wrong Barry” and she took days to apologize. She’s like a three year old who thinks that an apology is a sign of weakness when an apology is a sign of strength. The quicker this Special Snowflake fades away to obscurity the better for society.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

**sigh** I agree with you, and I wanted to say it, since there are too many people here defending their right (and yes it is a right, it’s just asshole-ish too) to use a offensive, demeaning slur just because they happen to not like some minor celebrity very much.

      • Ain'tNoTelling says:

@kanyekardashian – thank you. Why should she feel honored to be at the Met Ball? It’s a very normal event for people in the entertainment industry. I know that it’s not the annual company Christmas party, but to celebrities that go regularly, it is somewhat the equivalent of the annual company Christmas party.

She was immature and inappropriate in regards to her writing about her dinner guest. She apologized. Many here like to say Lena’s a special snow flake, and even though I understand why this is said, I believe that she is still somewhat young, and is learning from her errors. No one is born the perfect woman, nor does anyone end up being the perfect woman. All we can hope for is to continue to learn and grow, and become a better version of ourselves as decades go by, as a result of life experiences. I really appreciate that she was pretty human about this whole thing, and was self aware enough to make a public apology.

      • aenflex says:

I laughed. Using the word twat is aligning with the patriarchy? A woman using any word she likes as a descriptive term is basically not aligning with the patriarchy.
Heh, we’ve earned the right to call each other b*tches and twats, just as long as no one else does.

    • Suzanne says:

LOL. Her and Schumer are both using humor to cover their massive insecurities…always shoving down our throats how “comfortable” they are in their own skin. Really girls? Instead of trying to convince your public…try convincing yourselves..because we aren’t buying it! Schumer needs to stop wearing little girl dresses up to her coochie…accentuating her need to be accepted for her size regardless of whether her clothes fit her …and the other one just needs to wear age and size appropriate clothes, period. When the buttons are barely reaching the button holes…that tells you to go up a size or three.

    • Shelleycon says:

Haha she had me at Special Snowflake brilliantly funny

    • Shelleycon says:

I have never liked this girl because of her heightened sense of weird averageness, insane self importance, also she is a contrived idiot I don’t even care what she looks like she always sounds like a miserable prat. She’s almost like a young female version of Woody Allen (special twat).

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

Dunham has issues, to put it lightly.

According to reports, she allegedly bragged about sexually manipulating her younger sister in her book, she lied about being raped on college campus, and yet, we are all to believe that she is remarkably intelligent and profound?

Then, she proceeds to project all the stereotypes she complains about as a “feminist,” upon Odell Beckham Jr. She is a hypocritical pig, and I cannot wait for her to disappear once “Girls” ends. Unless her 15 minutes of continuing nepotism is not up?

As for Schumer, seems her ego is catching up with her. She better watch her step, she is not as talented, nor as funny, as she thinks she is, nor the hype portrays her to be.

    • Marianne says:

Cinderella was there. That was Claire Danes 😉

    • JenniferJustice says:

And why do the ugly stepsisters keep wailing about accepting the average un-conventional woman as beautiful, but it is always the princes (athletes, beautiful men) they focus their attention on? How is that not completely hypocritical? If beauty is in the eye of the beholder why do these two want so badly for a conventionally hot guy to see them as hot? It’s not going to happen. Ever!

  2. jeanpierre says:

Boo hoo. Get over freaking yourself, you racist child molester. No one care about your “struggle”.
Her apology is nothing but ME ME ME. She is truly insufferable.

    • Joy says:

Her being Chester the Molester can’t be brought up enough. She’s vile.

      • Loopy says:

She probably thought she was being cool mentioning two hot black guys, might give her some street cred. I hate to think what conversations these two have behind close doors.

    • Stumpycorgi says:

“Every time I see a human male and they don’t talk to me, they are rejecting me for sex because society doesn’t like my body! How offensive! Every man should be trying to fuck me no matter what! Also, don’t anyone dare objectify me! That’s also offensive!!

      TL/DR: I’m offended, pay attention to meeeee!!” /s 😖

      • Katie says:

Exactly. It’s not feminism with these two. It’s narcissism.

      • bettyrose says:

I saw in a comment on another site that OBJ’s girlfriend was with him at the gala. Is that true? If so, that makes this even more outrageous, to assume he bothered having any thoughts at all about Dunham when he had a date with him. Like, in some way, her insecurities should have mattered more than the women he’s involved with. Shouldn’t he have just ignored his gf briefly so that Dunham didn’t feel victimized?

      • Birdix says:

He’s already had to fend off homophobic slurs on the field (Carolina Panthers), which makes her even more of an a**hat. She blew it, and can’t eat enough humble pie to get out of this hole. What an idiot.

  3. Patricia says:

I was so enraged when I read what she said about O’Dell. For god sake, an educated woman should have some awareness of the horrors of many many black men being lynched (the very word makes my stomach turn, but we need a dose of reality here) because of the dangerous dynamic she is playing out here. And why is she playing this dynamic out? Because she’s an outrageous narcissistic asshole. I feel so badly for that man, to have had her bullshit foisted upon him.
She must have entirely missed her education because she’s so self absorbed. What she said has so much troubling historical resonance. In another time (and maybe even in this time, since sadly race relations have become a damn mess) her stupid comments could have gotten a man killed. I was already done with her, I hope even more people will be done with her now and she can go AWAY.

    • Jellybean says:

Plus the comments about Jordan that preceded it; the man isn’t a piece of meat. She is disgusting.

      • Lucy2 says:

I was quite bothered by the comment about Michael B Jordan. Imagine if the genders were reversed in that situation.

      • Tara says:

Yep, that MBJ remark turned my stomach. First of all, do you have ANY class at all? You were trying to “grind your ass” on a man? And then think about what would happen if Jordan stated he was trying to grind his ass up on a white actress, not Dunham cause that’s too much of a stretch, someone believable that we can all get our minds around. Say he stated he was trying to grind his ass up on JLaw at some event. Yeah, there’d be major blowback regarding misogyny and rape culture, and yeah, it’d be a lot worse because he’s black.

She has some nerve this woman. Really.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Add in the notion that some White women have, which is that they’re so much more desirable than Black women and a Black man will slit his mother’s womb to get a White woman (especially if she’s fuller-figured) and the stew just thickens. History tells us this and it has been wielded as a weapon.

Schumer has pulled that, Tess Halliday did it, Chelsea Handler and let’s not forget that street harassment video of the White woman being catcalled by Black and Latino men because it’s just so strange that the footage of White guys was lost, and you’ve got yourself one huge chip on the shoulder that some White women have vis-a-vis their value and attractiveness in regards to Black people.

    • Shambles says:

I completely agree with you. It’s deeply troubling, and the racial undertone is so appalling I can barely believe what I’m reading. Lena Dunham is horrible. End of.

      • ElleBee says:

I agree. These types of comediennes always single out black males to objectify because they think it makes them seem freakier and more sexual. The undertones are definitely racial as black men have traditionally been used for their perceived sexual prowess, athletic ability and nothing more.

I never thought she was funny and i’m desperate for her 15 minutes to be over..

  4. InvaderTak says:

Oh FINALLY. She will. not. learn. What will it take to make them both go away? Celebs have been utterly buried for less and yet these two still have careers somehow. I guess that’s what we should be more disgusted with; the fact that people and media outlets-including self proclaimed progressive/feminist ones- will give them enough passes so they can still have careers. There is nothing these two have to contribute to the world. They have proved time and again that they are self absorbed, ignorant people.

  5. Patricia says:

Also her apology took too long, and includes as usual way too much rambling about her damn self.

    • aims says:

Agreed. A simple ,” I was wrong and I apologize . ” would’ve been enough . Instead she has this long winded, rambling and pretentious rant about herself. I don’t think she’s funny, I think she’s a pain in the ass.

      • Lucky jane says:

But then it couldn’t be all about her and how she’s a victim because she has these body issues because people judge her because she’s not pretty enough.
I cannot stand her. You would think she was the first homely girl that ever lived. Didn’t she grow up in a wealthy family? Things could be worse.

    • ladysussex says:

Idk. I really, really don’t like LD. But I thought this apology showed a lot of contrition and it seems like she really reflected quite a bit about the matter. I just can’t believe she didn’t just blame all the criticism on “neocons” like she usually does. It seems to me that she is actually gaining some self-awareness.

  6. Tiffany says:

At first, I was looking for a statement from O’Dell and Michael’s reps telling her in the PR way to go to hell. Then I realized that would give her the attention that she gets off on, only to play victim. So, nevermind.

    • grabbyhands says:

Right? I kind of hope they don’t even acknowledge her and if they do, they’ll be like “We don’t even know who she is”.

    • Michelina says:

So far it looks like Odell hasn’t said a word though I am hoping with all my heart that he’ll take a second just to dismiss her by saying that he has no idea who she is. That would be perfect, since like Kaiser said, this is all because Lena has “special snowflake syndrome” and she goes fully rabid when she isn’t being praised or fawned over.

Lena has a history of trying to use token black people when her obvious racism and privilege gets called out, so she went on Instagram and posted a picture of herself Facetime-ing with Michael B Jordan trying to show “look guys, black people don’t hate me, I swear.” People went off in the comments and she was called out once again for her behavior.

    • Bridget says:

They won’t. It’s just not something that’s important in his circle, though of course he may field a question or two about it post game.

    • Lama Bean says:

I must admit the image of LD trying to grind on an oblivious and indifferent MBJ has me laughing uncontrollably.

  7. grabbyhands says:

I have never understood her appeal and now I think I never will.

As bad as her initial post was, I think her apology is worse. Clearly it was less of “I was an entitled asshat” and more of a whine about HER insecurities that also managed to come off sounding condescending AF, particularly considering her first acknowledgment gave a shout out to Amy Shumer about the “outrage machine”.

For her next Lenny article she and Shumer can talk about how like, totally mean people are being about her continuing to champion an abusive rape apologist because like, it isn’t like HE actually raped anyone.

Thsee morons are two of the most tone deaf, least funny people in the universe of the very picture of white privilege feminism.

  8. LostInTheSauce2341 says:

A racist, old tweet of Lena’s from 2010 is also resurfacing in which she says “Just found my “creativity journal” from 2005. It begins: “I dreamed I was a prostitute and that I molested a little African American rodent” https://twitter.com/lenadunham/status/10110075608

She’s problematic and she *is* oblivious to her own racism and she has been ignoring the concerns of ethnic minorities for a years now. The funny thing is, even after Lena did her PR apology, Amy Schumer continued to ‘like’ tweets on Twitter to the contrary, which were fans suggesting they were just joking and downplaying our outrage.

You guys *did* call it out years ago when you said she has Special Snowflake Syndrome. In the Twitter hemisphere, we have been calling this ‘Entitled, privelaged white feminist’ syndrome.

I don’t have time to unpack the layers of racism under her comments and frankly I am tired and exhausted of having to live through this ish everyday and explain every single day how X actions are racist and harmful.

    • detritus says:

It’s usually a thankless and painful battle, to point this out, but sincerely, Thank you.

You may not reach all the people you are trying to, but there are others who will read what you write, and think. And change.

It’s not your responsibility at all, but it helps.

    • Michelina says:

Amy Schumer is an unstable asshole. This might be an unpopular opinion, but how can one make a career of self deprecating humor and then flip out when people basically repeat her jokes back to her? She has so many issues with herself, and I find her whole shtick to just be gross now that she spazzes out on her audience members regularly because apparently it isn’t just humor, but a bit of masochism as she stands up there and tears herself apart. It’s become “You can’t make fun of me! Only I can make fun of me!” When she flipped out on Twitter over being called plus sized, it didn’t come off like she was upset with the fact that an average bodied woman was being called plus sized, but rather that she was just pissed that people thought she was fat. Too many issues for me.

I saw Lena’s racist tweet you posted getting circulated around Twitter. I’m happy it’s getting attention but can’t even say I’m surprised. Lena Dunham is so delusional and out of touch with reality. I saw on her Facebook page there is a plethora of white women coddling her and telling her how beautiful she is and how awful her critics are. Guess somethings will just never change. Other delusional, privileged women will always have her back no matter what she does.

      • G says:

Amy is also terrible to the “little people” and a horror to work with. She did a show at my college last spring and her demands to the catering staff were beyond ridiculous. She wanted specialty chips that you had to bulk buy off Amazon there for her, for example. She then treated all the staff like crap to add to that (I had friends working the event). All for a show that by all accounts wasn’t very good.
I think both of them are awful people and I don’t support rapist tendancies so I will never support Lena. So gross.

      • Shark Bait says:

A friend of mine went to one of her college tour shows this spring. It was the college my friend works at and they got some scoop on her as well. She was pretty demanding and then wanted a bunch of local celebrities and bigwigs to come to her after party. She said there were security people on the end of every row to make sure no one pulled out their cell phone. She also said that there were signs plastered everywhere saying No talking, no cell phones, no pictures, no noisemakers, no glitterbombs, no laser pointers, no eating, no heckling etc. She said she had never seen anything like it at any event they had there before.

    • Red32 says:

WHAT? That tweet! WTF kind of creative writing is this supposed to be? Also, not the best post for someone who molested her baby sister.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I don’t understand the mind of a person who would even THINK that, let alone TWEET it. She’s vile.

    • QueenB says:

its not the only one, more is surfacing. Lena also wrote:
‘An uncool thought to have: “is that guy walking in the dark behind me a rapist? Never mind, he’s Asian”‘

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3773265/Lena-Dunham-faces-backlash-Twitter-racist-tweet-resurfaces.html

    • jeanpierre says:

      She is disgusting.

  9. QueenB says:

are people surprised by this? Lena Dunham has been like this for years, starting with her disgusting blog about her trip to Japan.

she also tweeted this: “ps I’ll try and dance myself onto @michaelb4jordan if I have the chance, even when I’m a married grandma. I’m a red blooded str8 woman!” imagine a black men saying this about a white woman and the media crap storm that would have followed (rightly so)
the entitlement she feels towards black men is beyond words. im a red blooded woman is not excuse for inapproriate behaviour. a self described feminist should know this! Did he consent to her doing that? does it matter to her? or is her sexual attraction more important than the consent of the man she is dancing herself onto?

the best thing it has brought forward is how many white women think they are entitled to black male bodies and how offended they are when they are not given the attention.

this whole story is sick. she was applying her own thoughts on another human being and holding it against him! seriously! how many black men have died being falsly accused by white women? when this whole Kanye-Taylor feud was in the news recently we talked about how dangerous white women can be to black men.

Amy Schumer also posted something racist about cat calling but said “the band” took control of her twitter…sure. after her jokes about hispanics being rapists and dating a guy wearing blackface. sure.

    • Artemis says:

It’s because she was trying to grind on MBJ for about 20min. and then she defended herself with that gross tweet.

I am interested though, what her boyfriend thinks of this. This woman has NO self-esteem despite her talent and her fronting like she does. She puts herself in situations like having a gaggle of famous friends she also doesn’t feel secure with and talking about these men while totally putting herself down. She truly hates herself. What on earth is she like in her actual romantic relationship? If a man in a steady was this needy for emotional and physical attention and actually approaching women all the time and talking smack about them if they weren’t interested for whatever reason, he would be raked over the coals by the media as a dirtbag and cheater.

Her insecurity is going to ruin her if she doesn’t start working on overcoming it.

      • marley says:

        @Artemis

Pretty sure Jack Antonoff has been thinking about his escape plan for a while now. Especially after she posted a slightly pressuring tweet about engagement and wanting to get married.

She is too insecure. On one hand she spouts body confidence and loving herself…but then her low self-esteem ROARS all the time.

    • Lucky jane says:

I never followed her that closely. I just thought she a was a gross faux feminist that thought she was edgy for taking her clothes off all the time. I never saw all this racist junk. And I just now realized that michael b Jordan is black… So now I am getting the racism from the Met gala thing.
As a straight white woman myself, I hope people know she doesn’t represent me! She is disgusting. And so is Amy. I do not approve.

    • Guesty2 says:

Imagine a man saying that period.
Some women feel like their comments on men, aren’t the same sort of thing that women hate.
If a man joked about grinding there crotch on a women, he’s a horrible piece of shit, who looks at women as pieces of meat.
However in Lena’s and other women’s mind, a women trying to do that is funny and okay.
It’s not. Treat people how you want to be treated.

    • MI6 says:

Queen B, I was thinking the same thing about Special Snowflake Taylor Swift. If I were Kanye, I’d sue her lily white ass for defamation.
Demonizing POC to perpetuate some construct of white supremacism is disgusting and wrong and should no longer be tolerated.
Sometimes I am embarrassed to be white.

      • Lucky jane says:

The Taylor and Kanye stuff is absolutely nothing like this.
Kanye started that junk and just keeps on. He is not a victim.
Unless you are comparing him to Lena in this situation… Then maybe I could see some parallels.

      • MI6 says:

Lucky Jane, I am most definitely not comparing Lena to Kanye. Taylor Swift basically called him a liar and let the public and the industry believe it for nearly a year. Lena Dunham may be clueless and possibly racist, but she didn’t defame anyone’s character by lying and accusing them of something they didn’t do.

  10. Louise177 says:

I love that Odell hasn’t said anything. There were other people at the table. It would be one thing if he was talking to everybody else but it seemed like didn’t talk to anybody. You would think that considering Lena and Amy weren’t enjoying themselves maybe Odell wasn’t either. Baffling that she made sexist comments based on nothing.

    • ab says:

right? if it was as boring and awful as they said I wouldn’t assume the guy next to me was on his phone because OMG I’M HIDEOUS HE HATES ME. I would take it as validation that I wasn’t the only one not enjoying myself.

  11. Sixer says:

Years back, I had a friend whose brother went out with a glamour model here in the UK. The parties they went to were full of footballers and reality TV stars and models. My friend and I went along a few times and it *is* weird being a fish out of water in that way. We galumphed about as was our scruffy habit and were always the only ones eating any of the scrumptious buffets that were always laid out – the guys were always coked or drunk off their heads while the girls sniffed a lettuce leaf and went on about whichever wacky diet they were currently following.

But you have to look at it with a bit of humour. My friend and I laughed at the strange, plastic people. And the strange, plastic people laughed at us. Once, we actually heard someone ask who we were and the reply was, “Oh, that’s X’s sister and her friend. I think they must be lesbians.”

I think the Met Gala is hilarious. It’s as ridiculous to me as Effie Trinket in the Hunger Games. But I’m sure there are plenty of people who take it – and the fashion – seriously. Room for us all. And ALWAYS room for a joke.

You’d have thought Dunham – purportedly a comedian – would understand this. Clearly, Kaiser, you are right. She is 99% special snowflake and 1% comedian. She’d rather be racist than laugh at herself. And she will never, ever, ever, in a month of Sundays, understand this about herself. We probably shouldn’t bother giving her the time of day, since all she really wants is for us to give her the time of day, all day, every day. Because, you know, special snowflake.

    • MI6 says:

Sixer, I was just thinking the Met Ball sounds like the 7th Circle of Hell. Especially this year. 😑
That said, I was on the set of Girls a few years back and although I did not get a chance to meet Lena, I was in awe of her talent. Sadly, I am losing what respect I had for her.
Kaiser nailed it. LD needs to shut up and sit down. Every word that comes out of her mouth is NOT A pearl of wisdom.
      #humility

    • als says:

Sixer, I don’t think Lena is capable of your sense of humor or perspective when it comes to these parties.
She probably wants, with all her insecure heart, to be one of the ‘strange, plastic people’ and she is upset for not being there yet. Amy Schumer too.

  12. Ainda says:

Don’t worry Lena. May 1st next year you’re having off… Anna has taken notes…
Really sad she doesn’t even understand the implications of her stupid words…

  13. LostInTheSauce2341 says:

Also excerpt from the same Lenny interview where they justify Kurt:

“Lena Dunham: The other thing that I get really crazy about is this new world in which women aren’t just supposed to be protected from actions, they’re supposed to be protected from language. Women are so strong. My ovary has basically exploded in my stomach twice, and I was pretty chill about it. You think I can’t listen to some short comedy loser say something dumb about rape?

    Amy Schumer: Right.”

I hope they are both finally taken off the pedestal they have been given. Of course, being two wealthy white women, they can afford to laugh off the attempts of other women who continue to challenge rape culture and language. People like their sick friend Kurt who continuously downplay and undermine rape and sexual assault CONTRIBUTE to victims feeling unable to speak up about it and rapists feeling comfortable about themselves.

Not here for it. They continue to be celebrated and given accolades when there are women FAR more funnier, talented, deserving and less problematic.

    • QueenB says:

“They continue to be celebrated and given accolades when there are women FAR more funnier, talented, deserving and less problematic. ”
because the media is full of white women just like them. they wont go away in the near future.

      • Shark Bait says:

Meanwhile SNL just couldn’t find a black female comedian who was talented enough for the show… sure Jan.

  14. jeanpierre says:

She’s got some nerve channeling woody allen of all people.

  15. Tiffany27 says:

Who brought this mess upon us? Judd Apatow?

  16. Amanda G says:

They are both 30 and are acting like two high school girls who are better than everyone.

  17. Franny says:

I would probably stare at my phone too if I were seated next to Lena and it has nothing to do with me not wanting to have sex with her…..She’s so dumb.

    • bettyrose says:

Staring at phones is just what we do now. Everyone does it. All the time. It’s not even weird to do that at a fancy gala. It’s just what we do.

    • J.Mo says:

If she was feeling so uncomfortable, I’m pretty sure when he looked up from his phone he got bitch face looking back at him. Did she say hi or introduce herself?

      • Denise says:

It’s the man’s job to express his desire for her! Then at that point she can change her mind about how she feels about the attention.

  18. Jenna says:

I’m so tired of her using her body image issues as an excuse for everything. “I’m sorry Odell — I just have body image issues!”; “I trashed a magazine for photoshopping when in fact it wasn’t photoshopped at all — I just have body image issues!”

Ugh at the way these two just talk to one another. It’s such entitlement and privilege and arrogance, like the world must just bend to their will. I believe the race angle was an unfortunate mistake — but only because she’s so delusional that she has no idea how her words can hurt or affect anyone but herself.

    • Bettyrose says:

IKR? Time to grow up. We all have the voice of an insecure child inside us, but part of adulthood is learning to deal.

      • Jwoolman says:

I think Lena illustrates why it’s so important to pick your parents wisely…. 🙂 From what little I know about her, she had unusual problems from the get-go and her parents seemed rather clueless. In a more normal environment, she would have developed very differently. And yes, massive insecurity seems to be the root of her adult issues. The most secure adults tend to be ones who had at least one good parent who loved them unconditionally. Sometimes it’s someone other than a parent in their lives that fulfills that role, but without it in our childhood, for many that means lifelong problems that may or may not resolve with age. So probably it’s not that she was raised as a “special snowflake” but that she never really was anybody’s truly special and beloved snowflake (which all children are, so I wish the phrase would be retired as a pejorative). She might have been appreciated more as a trained monkey because of her intelligence displayed as a child. That’s not enough.

  19. Keats says:

I honestly think she thinks she’s so universally recognized for her brilliance that anyone who doesn’t want to talk to her is because they’re sexually repulsed by her or just really CHALLENGED by her SUBVERSIVE ATTITUDE. OBJ either doesn’t know who you are or doesn’t care or didn’t want to start up a 3 hour conversation about how edgy a woman in a tuxedo in 2016 is. Or a 4th option that is his business!

    • Michelina says:

Perfectly put. I mean what if OBJ was just shy? Maybe he doesn’t feel comfortable talking to people he doesn’t know. It blows my mind that this asshole really slandered a man she’s never had a conversation with all because he didn’t pay attention to her. If a man she didn’t want attention from was paying attention to her, that would be a problem also. Ironically enough, she mentions how she was grinding her ass on Michael B Jordan at the Met Ball. If the roles were reversed and some guy was rubbing himself all over her and she wasn’t into him, she would be writing a thinkpiece about how men are scum and how fragile and vulnerable she feels. Lena Dunham is so awful and obviously incapable of thinking of anyone but herself.

      • bettyrose says:

Most likely, he wasn’t thinking about her at all. He certainly wasn’t wasting time thinking negative things about some total stranger in a room full of people having fun.

      • Fiorella says:

Well to play devils advocate it would be nice if people talked to their table mates. That’s probably what used to happen. And that’s probably what Lena has grown up seeing. And the default is the man being doing starting the conversation. So especially awkward when it’s a hot guy, a place where most girls are hot and you’re a not hot girl and he’s not doing the conventional social step.

  20. Shambles says:

Some people are stunning, not because they fit conventional beauty standards, but because they have an inner goodness that radiates outward. Neither of these women have that quality, and it shows on their faces. They radiate insufferable with every look.

    • antipodean says:

@Shambles, you have encapsulated exactly what I believe too, and have expressed it far better than I ever could. When the world truly appreciates what is between a person’s ears, and what is in their heart, it will be a truly wonderful place. I fear that will never be the case however, and the only person one can seek to educate and improve, can only ever be oneself.
It is interesting to note that Mother Teresa has just been canonised. While some of her history could be interpreted as problematic, here was a person who seemed to tirelessly try to bring comfort and kindness to the least of those (or perceived to be), in society. It is interesting to note that how she looked, or what she wore, was never part of that equation. Why are such people not lauded more, when mindless pieces of fluff such as the Lena (special snowflakes) Dunhams, and her ilk are given more than their deserved share of attention? One of modern life’s imponderables it seems!

      • Denise says:

The problem with Mother Teresa is that she did not actually bring comfort to people. She worshipped suffering, a horribly misguided take on Jesus’ suffering from the Bible that she inflicted upon the sick and dying. This is not someone’s interpretation of her, she expressed her intentions explicitly on many occasions. She was full on out with what she was doing.

      • kaiko says:

@Denise–I’m just learning about MT’s dark side and it’s heartbreaking. Not at all what we were taught growing up, eh?

  21. Michelina says:

I don’t understand how these two were ever given the title of being feminist trailblazers of our time because they’re both delusional, privileged, out of touch, racist assholes who alternate between talking about how empowered they are, and complaining about how unfairly they’re treated whenever they’re criticized. They even mention in this article how tough and strong they are and how they can handle criticism, but it’s been proven over and over again that they can’t. I’ve never followed Amy’s career, but I’ve read enough headlines about her flipping out on fans for basically saying her own jokes back to her to know that she seems very insecure and unstable. I don’t respect the fact that Lena has the audacity to try to say “forgive me, I’m just really insecure” and actually liken herself to flaming garbage when the reality is that she is a complete narcissist who gets pissed when people don’t coddle her with praise about her brilliance and beauty.

Amy makes jokes calling Latino men rapists and Lena writes a show about NYC, one of the most diverse cities in the world, and there has only been ONE black guy and ONE Latino featured, and they were only written into the show as a response to criticism that the show was too white. Her social justice warrior bullshit act like she’s fighting the good fight is totally negated by the fact that her actions have proven time and again that she just doesn’t get it. She has posted about how black lives matter, but yet she reduced a successful young black man to someone who thinks in terms of “if I don’t want to fuck it, I won’t pay it any attention.” How disgusting and insulting.

  22. Lucky jane says:

They are both disgusting. I cannot imagine going to something like this party, all dressed up,and finding out that I am seated at a table with these two “ladies”. Poor Odel!
Lena just has to be a victim. It’s her thing. If he had talked to her she probably would’ve complained that he thoughg he was going to sleep with her.
Her boyfriend must really hate himself. I cannot find anything good to say about her

  23. Ima says:

It’s ironic that she is one of the leaders of the outrage machine, and would have gladly dragged the hell out of that guy if he had come on to her.

  24. Hypocrisy, thy name is Lena Dunham.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Lena Dunham’s pic must illustrate the words “insecure egocentrism”

    • I Choose Me says:

Ha. Reminds me of this gem from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Perry: Look up “idiot” in the dictionary. You know what you’ll find?

      Harry: A picture of me?

Perry: No! The definition of the word idiot, which you fucking are!

    • kaiko says:

More like MISERY thy name is Dunham. She used to really irritate me but now I just feel sorry for her…this chick will forever be a victim of herself.

  25. The Original Mia says:

Ugh. Never understood her or Amy’s appeal. This definitely cemented my dislike of Lena. Pretentious tw@t.

  26. perplexed says:

What does she mean that she “attempted” to grind on Michael B Jordan. Did he not want her to? Did she force herself on him? I was confused by that sentence.

    • jc126 says:

Do you really think she tried to grind on him? It’s a joke, obviously.

      • perplexed says:

I’m not sure what to think, mainly because she said she attempted….and failed (for 20 minutes?). I don’t get what the funny part is supposed to be in this joke. There doesn’t seem to be a punchline. The Odell Beckham Jr part of the conversation also confused what I thought she was trying to say about Michael B Jordan. She talks about being rejected in the latter part of the conversation, and since she has a boyfriend I have no idea why she’d feel “rejected” unless she wanted him to ask her out?

Lena Dunham is pretty pushy, and she did say she tried to touch her sister when she was a kid (for reasons I do not understand) and then told the world about it, so, yes, in her case, I would find it believable that she actually tried to grind on him. She’s not known for having boundaries.

      • Lucky jane says:

Wait, was this a joke? I am so confused. I guess I don’t get her “humor”.

      • Jellybean says:

‘It was a joke’ – I am sorry, but if a man made that joke about a woman, he would still be vilified. Someone above suggested Johnson making the comments about JLaw; he would never work again. I felt the same way when I watched an awards ceremony a few years back and the two female presenters picked out men in the audience they would like to shag and how long for they thought they would go for. I think we should either lighten up a bit or apply the same standards, with the same consequences, for men and women. I understand there are other issues relating to real and perceived physical threat, but for the sake of gender relations I really think consistency is essential.

  27. cakecakecake says:

I loathe both of them, pathetic chicks…just pathetic.
imagine all of the crazy, self entitled crap that they have not even said out loud but just thought.
    smdh.

  28. Lucy2 says:

This is Special Snowflake 101. Believe you are the center of all attention. Insult those who do not share the same beliefs. Create a lot of unnecessary drama. When attention from that dies down, make a big show about apologizing, for, you guessed it, more attention.
can we just stop paying attention to her now?

  29. bettyrose says:

The depth of the immaturity . . . is she actually able to function as an adult in normal circumstances? Get dressed, pay bills, etc?

  30. Marty says:

Like I needed another reason to dislike Lena Dumbo.

I just….what did she think would happen when this post came out? Did she really think people would say “Yeah, f**k Odell for not finding you attractive!”? I am flabbergasted that this woman is given so much space to be so terrible.

  31. Nicole says:

I had so many issues with this piece that it enraged me. From the insensitive talk about sexual assault to her comments about MBJ and OBJ. Don’t worry Amy and Lena were being dragged for filth by Twitter. I personally got blocked by both when I called them white feminists who didn’t know that joking about rape and ascribing racists tropes were problematic. I also threw Taylor swift in there. Amy also went on tweeting offensive shit on Twitter which got her dragged even more. It was quite an interesting Friday tbh.

Point being a lot of people are seeing them for the awful white feminists they are. Not even funny in the slightest. Lena is already kinda on her way down so hopefully Amy is as well. Both are horrible

    • Annetommy says:

“White feminist” shouldn’t be a pejorative term. I’m white, I’m a feminist, I’m a white feminist. How could I be anything else? If you are using the term to mean those who you believe have a particular mindset, that really needs some explanation. To me, anyone that isn’t interested in promoting equality for all women irrespective of ethnicity isn’t really a feminist anyway. There’s been too many examples of progressive movements fragmenting and then hating on each other. This shouldn’t be another.

      • Dyanmoon says:

No. If you are a feminist you would just say you are one. There was no need for you to include white. White feminism are white females who chose to ignore the plight of women of colour

      • JIll says:

Exactly. Heather Matazzaro used the term “white feminist” as well on twitter. Its infuriating.
A feminist understands overlapping injustices. Ignorance is ignorance

      • sunny says:

Haven’t you noticed? Being white is a slur now and apparently the ultimate insult! But don’t dare use any other race as a slur because that’s wrong. Only white people should be attacked and insulted because of their skin tone. It’s not at all problematic or hypocritical somehow.

      • Nicole says:

A white feminist is a feminist that ignores intersectional feminism. Ie the plights of WOC, gay women, bi women, trans women, etc. this cannot be the first time you’ve heard that term. It’s basically a term for feminist that are only about equality for women like them.
And no white is not a slur just like there’s no reverse racism but try again people

      • jeanpierre says:

I’m white and I’m a feminist too but totally get how and why this expression is employed and don’t feel insulted at all. The hypocrite faux outrage must stop, this is just attempted derailing.
        +1 with Nicole.

      • La Blah says:

        #notallwhitefeminists

Think about what that response is usually given to and have a think on why your post might make people roll their eyes.

      • sisi says:

white feminism is not a term about a feminist being white, it’s a term about the plight of white women who are (sometimes subconsciously, sometimes delibirately) considered more equal than others

so white feminism is faux-equality, and can be applied by anyone – not just white women

    • JIll says:

No its not the first time I heard white feminist or intersectional. Further diving the cause is ridiculous. Once again a feminist understands overlapping issues facing women. I cant believe this has to be said.

  32. Ima says:

The conversation defending Amy’s writer for his rape comments just show their status- seeking bs and their sense of being the exception to every rule – even the rules they themselves loudly and publicly try to impose on other people. It reminds me of Goop and her food rules. It’s just another way for wealthy white women to exert status.

  33. hb321 says:

Many, many problems arise when people are SO narcissistic and INSECURE (even problems much bigger than not enjoying the Met Gala!). In her 60 minutes interview, Angelina Jolie got asked about being beautiful & she gave an amazing answer- after saying “as long as Brad thinks I’m beautiful”, she said wants to wake up a smarter person & she tells her girls as long as you are stunning on the INSIDE, everything will fall into place. These two Met Gala “victims” need to do some INSIDE work pronto, and worry less about the shallow and how they are perceived (or whatever their “mind reading” skills tell them). I miss Bob Simon. http://www.instyle.com/news/angelina-jolie-talks-beauty-60-minutes

    • Annetommy says:

That’s actually a pretty trite and unoriginal response from Jolie, though I admire her in many ways. Dunham does seem narcissistic and insecure though. While it wouldn’t have hurt the guy to make some polite conversation, for her to create a whole edifice of rejection out of it is ridiculous.

      • Bunbun says:

“While it wouldn’t have hur the guy to make some polite co versation.” You just demonstrated your “white feminism.” He doesn’t owe her attention, nor is she entitled to it. Your comment is the same as a man saying “She could have been nicer when she rejected him, then he wouldn’t have stabbed her.”

      • Annetommy says:

That’s a very hyperbolic response. My view about making conversation with someone is not linked to the ethnicity of either party. If Tom Hiddleston had been sitting next to Dunham, or next to Beyoncé, and not spoken to them, I would feel the same. People are – rightly – criticising Lena for thinking she could read someone’s mind, and for drawing negative conclusions about them based on that ” mindreading “. I think some posters should be careful to avoid doing the same.

      • Izzy says:

@Bunbun, EXACTLY. Women don’t have to smile for anyone, make polite chitchat, just because ‘we’re women and it’s the appropriate thing to do,’ well guess what? That standard works both ways. A man does not OWE a woman his time or attention anymore than a woman owes it to a man. Period. And to pitch a hissy fit like Lena Dunham did just because Odell Beckham Jr didn’t fawn over her very existence, just demonstrates what an immature brat she is. She may be a woman chronologically, but inside she’s a child. No offense to children.

    • Locke Lamora says:

While both Lena and Amy seem to be horrible, and Angelina is amazing, I don’t think someone who has always been conventionally beautiful really knows how it is to be an “unattractive” woman.

  34. Red says:

Lena does a lot of annoying things, but this is not one of them. This is probably the least “offensive” thing she’s ever said, and obviously a joke about herself. There has to be something remotely offensive in that interview….

    • amunet ma'at says:

What she said was despicable. She sexualized a black male through her own self-centered insecurities and presented a hypothetical as if it was reality. The historical implications of her behavior made this a deplorable interview. And there is a lot of racially suspect language in her comments that can be unpacked to break down why her comments were offensive.

    • Lucky jane says:

I saw where some people said she maybe could’ve gotten away with this as more of a joke if she hadn’t been name checking these guys.
I don’t usually jump on the “how offensive” train like everyone else does… And I thought what she said was really super offensive. I think I thought it was really gross because I doubt Odel knows who she is. He is just this guy sitting there. If he had talked to her she would have been talking about him trying to bang her or something.
I am probably quick to judge her because I always feel like she is trying to be a victim. And she is just not a victim. Someone like that doesn’t really deserve any benefit if the doubt.

  35. Oliviajoy says:

I have never like Lena Dunham but could never really put my finger on why. She always seems so self righteous and gives this arrogance about herself but then pretends she is just an everyday woman. I also don’t care for Amy Schumer either. I’d take Chelsea Handler over her anyday.

    • Flowerchild says:

Why would you take Chelsea over Amy they are the same type of person Chelsea just older version. All 3 of them are unfunny racist with special snowflake syndrome.

  36. kri says:

Two of the most unlikeable women in Hollywood. From the jump I found them both unbearable, overrated, and unworthy of the fuss. When I saw the excerpt from Dunham’s book about her sister, I wanted to never see her grossness again. It’s always all about her. And ugh, ugh, ugh.

  37. Looty says:

Are there any male special snowflakes? Or is being repulsive for having an oversized ego purely a young female thing?

    • MI6 says:

Donald Trump is the one that comes to mind

    • amunet ma'at says:

She’s not repulsive for simply having an oversized Ego. She is repulsive for being a child molesting, narcissistic idiot who lacks awareness. She is tone death to her own faults concerning race but wants to be placed on a special pedestal for her actions. She labels herself a new wave feminist but acts problematically in issues that she should support due to her own label as a feminist.

      • Looty says:

Yes, she is repulsive for those things. But my question was only about the definition of special snowflake.

      • amunet ma'at says:

        @Looty
My comments directly correlate to the special snowflake response. She is considered a victim of the special snowflake epidemic because of how she carries herself. This has nothing to do with pulling on a gender, however, she does use her gender as a weapon to further her causes.

      • Looty says:

Still don’t know the answer to my question.

    • sisi says:

James Franco, Shia Laboeuf and Casey Affleck come to mind

      • Looty says:

Are they referred to as special snowflakes in celebitchy postings?

      • I Choose Me says:

@Looty. I don’t have an opinion on Casey Affleck but the other two get called a lot harsher things than special snowflake. At least by me. Pretentious asshats is a favourite of mine.

  38. Penelope says:

    They’re both unbearable.

  39. Bridget says:

Oh boo freaking hoo. You were taken as a guest of someone, who provided you a free ticket and free designer wear. Cry me a river if you didn’t have a ripping good time at something that should have served as a killer networking event.

  40. Marty says:

Just read the whole article, these two are seriously the worst.

  41. JohnnyT says:

I wonder if Lena even tried to initiate a conversation with HIM? I am very shy and introverted especially at parties and appreciate when people approach me. It almost sounds as if she just expected this young man to talk to her just because he’s black? In her mind all black men are supposed to find white woman attractive and if not then something is wrong with them or she is not his body type? Perhaps he found her personality annoying and it had nothing to do with her body. Am I missing something here you guys with reading the situation wrong?

    • J.Mo says:

I’m surprised more haven’t asked if she spoke to him or introduced herself too. If she was hating the party as much as it sounds, imagine how unfriendly her face was when he looked up from his phone.

  42. paddyjr says:

Lena’s comments about the Met Ball are disturbing on so many levels, not in the least because, as many people have said, if a man had said the same things, he would have been seen as a predator. She may have been attempting humor, but “innocent” situations like that can turn dangerous and violent in an instant. Just ask victims of sexual assault.

Regarding her whole soliloquy regarding Odell: why, just why? Did she attempt to talk to him and he ignored her? Ok, that’s life and a simple, joking “he was so rude! He really missed out!” would suffice. Or, if neither attempted to talk to the other, why say anything? It is not his responsibility to initiate or continue a conversation.

    • Lucky jane says:

The answer to your why’s… She is a hack. She thinks she is cool and edgy and an outsider. She always has to try and be outrageous because she has nothing really interesting to say. I believe she thinks she is really worldly, when in fact, she has led a very sheltered life and has no clue how to interact with regular people.

  43. Shark Bait says:

I can’t stand her shtick. She acts as if she doesn’t care the least bit about her appearance. She wears unflattering, frumpy clothes, she takes and posts unflattering pictures to social media and she presents herself as above it all. Then when people criticize her appearance, she calls them out and says “see, see… look! I told you, all anyone cares about is looks and fashion, how dare they criticize me!” Then she does stuff like this, she attributes thoughts upon OBJ and says “look, look, this handsome athlete wouldn’t even look at me twice in a room full of models. He thinks I’m a frumpy, ugly heifer in a tux!! See, see, society puts all it’s focus on beauty and fashion! See I told you!”

Then she has to backtrack and admit that it’s all a projection of her insecurities. She is not a confident, above it all woman. She has such low self esteem and it’s sad. I think that she is afraid to really try to play it straight and dress up for events because she doesn’t want to actually be criticized. She knows if she wears some avant garde, ugly, unflattering outfit she can blame the criticism on the shallowness of society. If she was so above it all she wouldn’t respond.

  44. PoliteTeaSipper says:

    Disgusted by both of them.

  45. mrspanda says:

I totally agree, this is an advanced case of special snowflake syndrome; and offensive on so many levels! I was stupid enough to read the entire interview. They are both in agreement that ”hey, women can take a rape joke… we don’t need to censor language! Let’s just focus on the guys actually raping! Catch the rapists not the writers! (in defense of Amy’s rape-joke making employee). Rape Culture thanks Lena and Amy for their wonderful contributions to its cause 🙁 Women are tough and can handle offensive rape jokes! oh hahaha! He’s just a degenerate loser writer but he’s not an actual rapist so chill out! These two give such conflicting messages, they seem to cherry pick whatever suits their agenda. Amy should have taken a stronger stance with this douchebag employee. She’s not responsible for him personally but she is professionally (she’s hired him for the past few years) so it DOES reflect on her, and saying ”quick lets find the real rapists!’ doesn’t deflect from that.

  46. QQ says:

I have an entire ass bag to unpack about these two stupid excuses for White Feminism™ But im both super high and also all for taking a page out of the O’dell Beckham Playbook and continue my life unbothered and continue my studious non acknowledgement of em (let it be said this is my last click on either of them posts, my brainspace is TOO GOOD for these two poorly dressed ill constructed bozos)

There are LEVELS To the entitlement some white women in specific feel to our constant praise, our eyeballs, to be put on a pedestal, to black men’s bodies and attention and Boy is this milkbag shaped chippie the entire embodiment of this, the fact this happened so close to the anniversary of Emmett Till’s death is justttttttt .. ( in case it needs to be spelle to the defenders/willfully obtuse in a not so distant past , shit Current day the accusation of insolence of this woman would have gotten this man strung up and made Strange Fruit QUICKLY!) the Mind Boggles, nothing has changed! , this long winded hurt titty baby apology is getting 55 side eyes from me for the simple fact that this one and Amy STAY blocking black women and well informed intersectional feminist/womanists ladies but don’t let a black dude with a blue checkmark come set them straight with yhe same arguments that all these other women have in fact told them NOW is a Gd Revelation, GTFOH with that and I HOPE Odell and MBJ stay saying No words about this Corny sad sack crummy witch

Don’t get me started on how Amy wished upon a star that a lesser person got shot, instead of, ya know, sweet girls…. these two turds are getting flush down the toilet as far as i’m concerned

YAAAAAAAASSSSSSS! QQ Whoo. This Lena Dunham mess send my pressure up this week. Thank you for your post. Emmett Till, Rosewood, 14 year old George Stinney Jr. Scottsboro Boys, William Harper, Central Park Five. All cases of where black men were falsely accused, killed, tried and in some cases executed for the raping/killling a white girl/woman. Our country has an extensive history of painting black boys/men as hyper-sexual predators. Now in steps Lena Dunham pulling a Darth Becky. With the current climate in the US she has no idea nor did she care what effect her comments could have had on OBJ life.

When my son was 10, he was accused of inappropriately touching a little white girl in school.

He wasn’t even in school that day. He had been in the ER all night getting breathing treatments for his asthma.

When I went nuclear on the the teacher (not my sons teacher) she said she- the teacher- which tells you a lot about this story – got him confused with another “little black boy”. When it was all said and done, it wasn’t a “little black boy” who had touched the girl. It wasn’t a boy who had touched her period.

  47. Lucky jane says:

Amy: “you were dressed like a boy. You looked really sexy.”
We can also conclude that Amy is a liar.

    Immature… But I couldn’t help it.

  48. hannah says:

Lena Dunham is tumblr coming to life .

  49. marley says:

Another social media post w/casual racism found concerning Muslim women and hijabs.

    Screepcap of instagram: http://assets.feministing.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/LenaDunhamHijab.jpeg

Article w/the screecap from 2012 talks about Lena Dunham’s problematic ‘casual racism’ : http://feministing.com/2012/08/14/does-it-matter-if-lena-dunham-is-a-casual-racist/

That’s from 2012, too. Which doesn’t really seem that long ago.

  50. Katie says:

I do not understand the need for people to tear apart what they don’t like.
If you hated the Met Gala, DON’T go! No one forced them to accept the invitation. Anyone who can read an article knows what the Met Gala is. It isn’t like it was a super secret party and they were shocked by what they found there.

  51. Jmarie says:

Pigs, both of them. Nasty things.

  52. Calico Cat says:

” I really appreciated you showing me your t-ts several times.”

Okay, so maybe Amy is impressed by boobs? I can’t even with this one. Someone’s gotta explain that to me, I guess that kind of conversation might happen around puberty. Maybe those two have finally started?

    • Patricia says:

All of Amy’s humor comes off to me like she’s still in middle school. Like she thinks it’s so edgy to talk about boobs. Ugh.

  53. Veronica says:

God, it is so embarrassing to be a white person sometimes.

    • Lucky jane says:

Don’t be embarrassed. It’s not your fault. It wasn’t the white person in her that made her act like a fool… Or the thirty year old woman… It was the idiot in her… Pure and simple.

  54. Elaine says:

I’m sorry that she apologized. Why? Because she’s allowed to go to a party and not like it.

And she’s allowed to sit next to someone who she *thinks* doesn’t like her. And say it.

She *thought* he didn’t like her. Maybe he didn’t.

Maybe he did. Her opinion. And she’s entitled to it. And that’s my opinion 😉

    • J.Mo says:

Is she entitled to decide what Odell was thinking and blast him publicly for what she imagined?

      • Fiorella says:

Yes, she has the right but it would be offensive to whoever she is talking about and likely won’t endear her to any people in her field. I feel people are being a tad harsh though

  55. Tez says:

Geez what is all the hating? Men are visual creatures, and if you are short and stumpy and men are surrounded by models where do you think they are going to look?

    • J.Mo says:

Maybe they will look at someone who says hello and introduces themselves. It seems like when Odell looked up from his phone he just got bitch face so went back to what he was doing.

  56. Pepsicola says:

God have mercy on the PR teams for both of these women. It baffles me they would mention how much they didnt like the Met Gala after willingly accepting the invitations and after securing Vogue covers. Anyone who pays a spec of attention to this event would expect it to be full of pomp, grandious and sheer ridiculousness – its gonna be filled from models that are thick as two short planks to business people who make millions from the industry. You may not have enjoyed yourself but what do you get – very publicly – letting the organisers know you didn’t? I think of them and think of Tina Fey in this respect – she has that same self depreciating schtick and manages to navigate the ridiculousness of celebrity with more savvy than either of these two.

  57. jbnyc says:

There was an extensive period when identifying and calling out the privileged white male was a social justice talking point. I think many white women conviniently forgot that while white men of priviledge where oppressing this group and marginalizing that, white women were by and large by his side and reaped all if not most of the same political, social, educational and economic benefits. Many of these, privileged, white women (like Amy and Lena) have claimed some distorted version of feminism (look at me; I get laid; if you don’t think I’m funny, YOU’RE the racist/misogynist/oppressor, I know how non white people think and I am entitled to both appropriate and project my stereotypes and insecuritiea on to them, etc.) and now have to be continuously reminded that they have just as much ability to be racist, oppressive, ignorant, insufferable and alienating to other people who are not white, judeo-christian Americans.

  58. Denise says:

In her apology she says all the right things. She expresses without vagueness everything she did wrong that night and demonstrates that she understands what she did and the implications of such behaviour. Which means she knew exactly what she was doing. There are no real ‘whoopsies’ with this person. She even referenced her own narcissism in her statement, turning a harmful and insidious disorder into cutesy self-deprecation to further disarm her admirers. You think you’re so clever Ms. Dunham but we see you.

  59. Ellis says:

What feminist describes herself as a marshmallow-dog-child? I have friends who are actually silently, without acclaim of any sort, exhibiting those trailblazing traits, and there’s no comparison. And here’s an idea; if you are insecure about your body? Change it. It’s called “diet and exercise”. Or stay the way you are and embrace it, stop looking for sympathy for your “insecurities”. Her apology is a whole lot about her, and then, “oh yeah, I shouldn’t have said that about him”, and then more about her. Special Snowflake Syndrome (brilliant description) indeed. Her show portrays women as asinine. And Amy? I’m old enough to recognize that her standup is rehashed old material. Both of them? Move along, nothing to see here. And, from now on, in my head whenever someone says the word “vagina”, I’m mentally replacing it with “snowflake”, and will silently LMFAO.

  60. Nina says:

You know, I actually do like Dunham’s “Girls”. The whiteness of the entire cast is super troubling yes, and the characters are all hugely unlikeable, but I do think that the show contains a lot of nuance, strong acting, and interesting character arcs that have encouraged me to keep up with it from season one. I think that the secondary male characters redeem the show quite a bit, actually. That being said, Dunham is so clueless and heinous. I’m kinda relieved that the show is ending, because it’s getting harder and harder for me to separate the “artist” from her work…

  61. Jag says:

They both are so disgusting and insufferable that I almost didn’t click on this article, but I really like everyone’s opinions, so I did.

  62. Frosty says:

So why didn’t she take the initiative and talk to HIM? Oh yeh right: SSS.

  63. amp122076 says:

I have said this on this site about Lena before – she’s literally the only one shaming people. For all her talk about people bullying her about her “nontraditional body”, I literally have ONLY ever heard it from Lena herself.

  64. stinky says:

i dont have anything nice to say.

  65. Sarah says:

Don’t like these two. There are far more talented people that are much less self entitled.

  66. naomipaige says:

I finally figured out who Schumer looks like = Miss Piggy! Sorry, but come on….

  67. tekla says:

you know what, I’m just a simple european girl and I really don’t get why she had to apologise for joking like that. I know that feeling you get, when you’re surrounded by much more attractive women and the guys ignore you because they wouldn’t f*ck you. why not joke about it?
