Lena Dunham spent days, if not weeks or months, thinking about Odell Beckham Jr. They were seated at the same table at this year’s Met Gala, and according to Lena, Odell barely spoke to her and spent most of the time on his phone. As we learned in Lena’s latest Lenny interview, which was released last Friday, Lena projected a lot of sleazy, misogynistic and racist bulls—t onto Odell’s general indifference. At first, Lena tried to double down and say that it was all a joke and she’s just so insecure, you guys! But then she finally apologized, while somehow still making the apology all about herself, the most special snowflake in the entire universe.
Throughout the controversy, Odell didn’t say anything. He didn’t tweet about Lena, he didn’t Instagram or Snapchat about her, he didn’t release any statements. It wasn’t clear that he was aware of her existence even after the kerfuffle. I took that as Odell being classy – when someone behaves so inappropriately, why not just let them dig themselves out without offering up anything? Well, Odell did speak this week. He chatted with Complex at a GQ party – he’s in New York, having fun, catching the US Open and launching a capsule collection of Odell-designed sweatpants. So what did Odell have to say?
Odell Beckham Jr. may be the only person in the country without an opinion about Lena Dunham’s opinion about Odell Beckham Jr. When asked last night at a private party at GQ’s penthouse in Manhattan about pop culture’s latest controversy du jour—in which the creator of HBO’s Girls described how she thought the Giants’ wide receiver perceived her as, among other things, “not the shape of a woman by his standards,” despite never actually exchanging words with him—Beckham remained decidedly neutral.
“I don’t have enough information to really speak on it,” he told Complex. “We’ll see what happens from there. I never want any problems with anybody in this world.”
The rest of the interview is just Odell talking about the sweatpants he co-designed with David Helwani. Helwani and Beckham are asked at the end of the piece if their sweatpants are suitable for all people, perhaps someone like Lena? Helwani says, “I’m sure she’ll look good in it.” And Odell agreed, saying: “Absolutely.” So, what do you think of Odell’s reaction? It just feels like… damn, as if we needed any more evidence that Lena Dunham is an a—hole, right? Odell is so non-controversial. He literally did nothing to Lena and hasn’t even cared enough to pay attention to the controversy. Meanwhile, Lena has constructed a five-act tragedy around their vague encounter.
Odell also spoke in the locker room about the controversy and he invokes the words “bad blood.” IT’S A SWIFTSPIRACY.

Why this no talent, overpriviliged grad from Oberlin – I was accepted there and chose not to go myself. You might want to guess why – it’s full of whiny children, in the middle of Ohio. Scary. And if anyone remembers the singer Liz Phair, she went there as well – then presented herself, much like Dunham as a downtrodden feminista a.k.a not what I consider a true feminist. I remember one interview with Phair where she talked about needing to buy her “resort wear”, plus she had grown up on the mean streets of one the richest suburbs in the U.S. – Winnetka, IL.

But to clarify the thirsty and offensive, beyond belief grab that Dunham made for attention, it definitely comes from living in a nice, safe bubble of a place your entire life, where the worst thing that happens to you is the breaking of a nail. She reminds me of Chris Evans’ new fling (can’t remember her name) who looks at him as her ideal 7th grade boyfriend! Well, that’s a good idea for the basis of a new relationship.
Hope nothing truly awful happens to these women (who don’t even really seem to consider themselves feminists or seem to care about anything but themselves) like the breaking of a heel of a Louboutin!

Honestly I dont think it was intentional shade (although I think it’s fun to read it that way) because I think OBJ is a genuinely good, live-and-let-live kind of guy. But his response was golden because it shows that his personality is the opposite of Dunham’s characterization of him. In other words, her interpretation of who she assumed him to be is based on race and gender stereotypes and I think this makes it official, right?

She was being self-deprecating and making fun of herself for the sake of being funny (which is obviously subjective). I don’t think it ever crossed her mind that she was supporting or fueling some racist trope about the sexualization of black men and white women. I was born in the South, have gone to school and worked here my whole life and never did that characterization occur to me, and it’s not for lack of witnessing plenty of racism throughout the years. It doesn’t resonate with me, because I can’t think of an instance when I’ve encountered or witnessed it, despite having lived, worked and studied in integrated, heterogeneous environments. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist or that she/we shouldn’t act appropriately when it’s pointed out to us, but I think it’s a sign of how times have changed and/or are continuing to change for the better. There are obviously monumental issues that remain, but perhaps some of the racist garbage (just a little) has started to fall away. Not all, or most, but maybe a little.

You can feel that Dunham did not intentionally set out to dehumanize and objectify Beckham but we’re not talking about intent here, just the outcome. Even then it is difficult for me to give her a pass on intent because it takes an unsettling amount of arrogance to so easily and thoroughly disregard a black man’s otherness.

I do not get Lena at all. I’m a die hard feminist and I am pleased when a woman has a business success, which Girls was, but I did not get it at all!! I gave it two episodes. I found Adam Driver very intriguing (thank you Star Wars for proving me right and letting me never have to watch the show to see him) and jumped ship!
Adam Driver was my favorite thing about Girls. I blame nepotism and Judd Apatow for Lena’s career. Tiny Furniture wasn’t bad, but I don’t think she was able to parlay that quality onto Girls. I guess it’s cheap to produce, because I have no other idea how that show got multiple seasons but Boardwalk Empire wasn’t able to continue.

For the life of me I don’t understand why Lena Dunham is popular. I bear her no ill will at all, but I don’t see her appeal. Girls was obnoxious and it seems as though she goes out of her way to make herself as unattractive and not photogenic as possible. I don’t think that she owes us any attractiveness or anything like that. But when it appears that you go out of your way to be unattractive in a visual based art form (movies, television, etc.) and then you scream and cry about how others in that visual based art form treat you based on your perception of their opinion of your looks, you’re an asshole.
TL:DR She appears to go out of her way to be more miserable than she already is to generate sympathy and express righteous indignation at the injustice of having to be Lena Dunham in a Blake Lively industry.
I agree, I also don’t find her particularly intelligent not her work ground breaking. I have no interest in watching “Girls”, since I think it sounds hellish to me. As the years go on, Dunham just becomes more and more insufferable.
On the one hand I’m thrilled that the Celebitchy readers are finally seeing the trash that is Lena Dunham for what she is after countless missteps over the past few years. On the other hand, I’m fighting the urge to shout “I told you so” from the mountains. In her book, she lied about how she was the victim of rape via a guy on campus that was a Republican, knowing it would be a hot button for her “fans,” fits into the narrative she pushes, and ruined this guy’s life after people (easily) figured out who she was alluding to. But because, ew- Republicans, the outrage was kept to a minimum and there was no formal Twitter-like apology where she admits the error of her ways and accepts responsibility for ruining a stranger’s life. She built a narrative in her head that was completely fabricated, built on hot button issues and has been able to get away with it because the PC police don’t monitor crimes against Republicans. I know this community tends to lean left on just about everything and that’s fine, I support everyone’s right to live and let live, but at least let’s acknowledge the hypocrisy/double standard at play here by us, the outrage machine.
I’m pretty sure a lot of us have always found her insufferable, regardless of our political leanings, and most of us find her to be a sleazy hypocrite by now. And have since her book debacle. I certainly never understood how her stupid show got on the air in the first place. I couldn’t even make it through one episode.
