In a rare piece of non-Brangelina news today, here are some photos from the big Hollywood premiere of Queen of Katwe. I keep forgetting that this is a Disney movie! But that makes me happy too, that Disney is putting some money into a film that is set in Uganda, that stars two African actresses, that is directed by a woman of color. Props to Disney for this, quite honestly. I can’t wait to see this.
Anyway, Lupita Nyong’o continued her incredible red carpet reign with this premiere look. For her promotional work on this film, and in her public appearances in the past month or so, Lupita has been consistently wearing African head wraps. Personally, I love it. I always love it when the focus is just on Lupita’s face, so stylistically – regardless of the political/cultural message – I love that Lupita keeps doing this. Lupita’s premiere dress is Elie Saab Resort. It’s pretty, but the wrap is really what makes this look work.
I’m also including photos of Lupita’s young costar Madina Nalwanga (who is something of a budding fashionista!) and David Oyelowo.

She’s always stunning but this isn’t my favorite dress
Me neither. She’s worn this style a few times now.
I usually love her outfits, but this one I’m not a fan of. I think it’s the stripes across the top that is throwing it off. If that was gone & it was just a V neck, imo it’d be better.
I do love the color on her & the headwraps. She is just so beautiful. Woman Crush Wednesday!! <3
PUSH THROUGH WITH THE GELES AND THE TIGNONS QUEEN!!! she looks so frigging EXCELLENT!!
Madina with this Color *swoonington!!*
David and this Kente Accents!! this is SO VERY BLACK AND GOOD UNTO MY SOUL!!!
I don’t know much about Creole culture, so i just looked up tignons and holy hell that story.
Correct me if I’m wrong in my interpretation, but some old ass politician thought black women in Louisiana were getting too uppity, all the white men liked their hair and the way they dressed and were leaving their white wives or stepping out. This governor decided none of that was ok, because ‘social order’ and racism so he ordered all the creole ladies of colour to wrap up their hair.
Except the community basically turned it on its head, using beautiful bright colours, quality fabrics and adding jewels. Instead of a mark of dishonour, they made it a sweet fashion statement that ‘only enhanced their beauty’ according to historians. And funnily enough those creole ladies still kept on attracting the attention of those high status men.
So the tignon changed from a form of oppression to a giant f@ck you to the establishment trying to tell black women how to dress and who to love.
You Got it Boo, Someone thought they were “Too_________” (pretty/sexy/free/libidinous/unslavey) and the best way to keep em in line was “Cover your head if even a drop of black is in you and BOOM STYLE For dayssssss TALL and LOUD
Aw man. This makes me love her more.
Madina is so gorgeous.
but that skirt is just too long for tea length, too short for maxi…
I agree on the skirt but no once can wear that sizzling orange like her. So stunning!
The skirt is so beautiful, and I love it with the orange. The proportions are a bit off though, it’s true.
I love it!! Saw the pics earlier and kept looking at them like they were made of gold. She just had that something. She is modern Audrey.
I love everything but the eyeshadow. I don’t know what gave her the idea matching your eyeshadow to your dress is a good idea, but I wish someone would tell her it’s not. It takes otherwise striking looks into cutesy, overly matchy-matchy territory.
The movie looks great from the trailer. I am excited to see it. Kudos to Disney for throwing money at promotion on this. This will be the winter family film and I think it will make gobs of money.
Love the wrap and the main colour of the dress, not so sure about the stripes. But Lupita is enchantingly beautiful.
This is where I am too. Dislike the stripe detail immensely but the colour and complementary geles is so fab. And as usual she just glows.
Wow! She’s stunning.
Agreed! Absolutely gorgeous! I love her whole look – she’s not afraid to take a risk on the red carpet.
She’s a vision, nothing new about that. Also, I’m so here for guys like David and John Boyega, mixing it up!!
All gorgeous!! I love Lupita’s dress more though.
Love her dress. The stripes make it really interesting.
Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous.
Adore the style, but the color is a bit too wishy-washy for me. She suits strong colors rather than pastels imho.
Also, as a fellow POC, I love that she’s bringing a bit of, for want of a better phrase, heritage fashion to the red carpet lately. It highlights that outside “the west” we have our own distinct fashions and not just cute costumes.
I’m going to be in the minority here – don’t kill me – but I think this head wrap is kind of … too fussy? I usually love head wraps but the multiple knots make it look like someone underestimated the amount of fabric, got stuck and then kept knotting.
This is a shallow remark but every time I see Lupita I just think “actual Helen of Troy, this is the face that could launch a thousand ships.” And to know that she’s so much more than her looks, she is a woman and celebrity of substance. I love her, MY QUEEN. I am very excited to see this film.
She is gorgeous! These looks are beautiful-wow!
Impeccable as always. Queen indeed.
Disney? Does that mean the film’s going to have a happy ending?
Ever since this movie was announced, I’ve been looking forward to it. Trying to plan a time to go with some friends, hope the reviews are positive.
I love this look on Lupita. I wouldn’t choose it for myself, but it works for her. Madina looks great as well.
Best dressed cast at a premiere I’ve seen in ages!
Love the color. This is a lesson that you don’t need to wear a black column dress to look elegant and amazing and high couture.
