Pressing political question: Did Mel Brooks try to ‘pants’ Pres. Obama?

And now for the REAL hot-button political issue this week: did comedy legend Mel Brooks try to “pants” the president of the United States? Mel Brooks went to the White House yesterday for the presentation of the National Medals of Arts. For some reason, these are the “2015 National Medal of Arts” and not 2016? And while I was surprised that Mel Brooks – who is 90 years old – has never received the National Medal of Arts before now, keep in mind that he’s literally won everything else. I think the Obama White House was like, “Wait, Mel Brooks has won everything but the National Medal? Well, let’s rectify that situation!” So that’s how Mel Brooks ended up at the White House.

When Pres. Obama gently placed the medal around Brooks’ neck, Brooks did some sort of comedic move and some people interpretted it as “Mel Brooks tried to pants the president.” Decide for yourself:

The first time I watched it, I did think this was an Attempted Pantsing. But I watched it again with Mel’s own explanation, which is that he was making a jokey move about the heaviness of the medal, and now I see it. I don’t think he was going for POTUS’s trousers, although that would have been both hilarious and controversial. I suspect Obama would have let Mel Brooks pants him just for fun.

    Love both these men.
And love that NPR’s Terry Gross also received a Medal of Arts. She’s amazing.

Yeah, it’s a play on the medal being heavy; but that is a GREAT headline.

Think I’ll watch Young Frankenstein this weekend…

Me too. I’m feeling the need for a Mel Brooks marathon. Men in Tights. Space balls, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Dracula Dead and Loving It.

Me, too! High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. The skill of his chosen core of players was really amazing. I adore Chloris Leachman in his films- And Terry Garr, Madeline Kahn, Gene Wilder, Dick Van Patten, Marty Feldman, Harvey Korman- just thinking of the roles is making me smile right now.

        Thank you, Mel Brooks!

I love Mel Brooks. I have heard many endearing things about him as a person, not to mention the incredibly legacy of laughs that he has given to us. I am so glad he is being recognized, and that he added his own silly touch to the pageantry!

Still got the skills to pay the bills at 90. I love Mel Brooks.

  6. Insomniac says:

Thanks for this; I really needed something nice today, and that fit the bill. 2016 better leave Mel Brooks alone.

  7. Melody says:

The President’s move appeared to be trying to catch Brooks rather than defending a pantsing move as well.

I love that even in his 90’s people expect such naughtiness of Brooks – he’s a treasure.
